End of Round 29 - Tov’s Log
Tov (50) vs. Jae (49) -> Tov Win
————————————————————
Tov only saw the final scores for a fraction of second before the lights cut out.
50 - 49
She won.
Barely.
Again.
Emergency sirens blared to life.
The crowd, consumed by the darkness, began to panic.
Two guards rushed the stage, barreling past Tov and snatching Jae up by both his arms.
One of her heels snagged in a groove on the stage and she stumbled back, but someone caught her before she could fall and a gloved hand took hold of her arm.
She flinched at the unwanted contact, trying to pull away.
“Tov, we need to go. Now.”
Familiarity prickled at the back of Tov’s mind. She stopped struggling.
As her eyes adjusted to the dark, she could make out a medic patch faintly glowing on the guard’s sleeve.
Elias?
She bit her tongue to keep from saying his name aloud, drawing blood.
Another guard took Tov’s other arm and quickly led her off stage. They were shorter than Elias, with a smaller build.
The slope of their shoulders was a dead giveaway.
Prem.
“What’s going on?” She shouted over the ensuing chaos.
“Not sure yet, but we need to secure your safety first.” Prem said, cutting through the throngs of frightened backstage staff.
He ushered her and Elias to a door that led into a stairwell. The same stairwell Tov had used to get to Himei and Tallis before their rounds.
How long ago was that?
She shook free of her thoughts, forcing herself to stay in the present as they exited the stairwell into the tunnels.
It was quieter underground, the wailing of the sirens above them muffled by the thick layers of concrete.
After a few turns left and right, the number of aliens the trio passed grew fewer and fewer, until they turned onto an empty hallway that deadened.
Prem stopped and looked over his shoulder behind them before locking the set of doors they just came through.
“Okay, I think we’re far enough away now.” He exhaled like he’d been holding his breath. “Find any new info, Eli?”
Tov turned to Elias, who was tapping away at a device with a small screen attached to his left sleeve.
“The alarms going off are meant for intruders, but I don’t see any alerts about security breaches.” Elias said, removing his helmet. “Something’s off about this whole thing. I don’t like it.”
“Whatever it is, we should be safe here.”
Prem pulled off his helmet in turn and shook his curly hair loose.
It was Tov’s first time seeing what he looked like.
He was a bit paler than her and Elias, dark hair and dark eyes, with a scar running from the bottom of his right eye to his chin. It looked old and somewhat faded, likely from his childhood.
Based on his youthful appearance, she guessed he was closer in age to Nyx than he was to her.
Prem noticed Tov’s assessment of him and flushed at the tips of his ears, “Oh, yeah, I guess we haven’t really met before.” He let out an awkward chuckle before extending a hand to her. “I’m Prem, Elias’s junior.”
“Nice to meet you, officially.” She said, shaking his outstretched hand in the formal manner Cassio taught her. “I assume you also know my benefactor?”
“Yep! Not as well as Eli, since I’m younger, but I know them all the same. I offered to help out with delivering the messages.”
If Prem also knows this person, they’d have to be rather young, right? Maybe around my age?
But how would they know Alien Stage guard medics?
Are they a medic too? Or perhaps another guard?
“Shit.” Elias hissed.
Both Prem and Tov turned to face him as he furiously tapped the screen, his expression pinched.
“What’s wrong?” Prem asked, a slight edge in his voice.
“Subject-010625 escaped.”
Tov inhaled sharply.
Jae escaped?
“What?!” Prem’s voice pitched upwards. “How?”
“The announcement said he was taken by two rogue guards.” Elias said.
“Those must’ve been the guards that rushed the stage.” Tov said. “I thought they were taking him someplace safe like you two did.”
Prem groaned, running his hands down his face. “I thought so too.”
“It’s being reported that the guards are highly violent. They think it’s the same pair that took Subject-010420 after Round 11.”
Evon?
The room started to spin.
Tov stumbled over to a wall to brace herself.
“Evon is still alive?” She asked faintly. “She escaped too?”
There was a pressure building in her chest.
Something wanted out.
Elias nodded. “Yes, we believe that’s the case.”
A loud bark of laughter punched its way out of Tov’s diaphragm and echoed off the concrete walls, startling the two guards and herself.
Before she could open her mouth to explain or express concern, a stream of thready, hysterical giggles bubbled up from her chest and strangled the words halfway up her throat.
Tov laughed until her sides hurt, until she couldn’t breathe, until tears blurred her vision and the laughing became crying.
She sunk to the floor on weak knees, doubled over from the emotional overstimulation.
Relief. Joy. Envy. Anger. Grief. Sadness.
All caught in a swirling storm racking her blood and bones.
Tov expected questions.
What’s wrong? Are you alright? How can we help?
She didn’t have any answers.
I don’t know. I don’t know. I don’t know.
But the questions never came.
Instead, strong but gentle hands guided her to rest her back against the wall.
Elias sat down next to her on her left and Prem sat down on her right.
Neither said anything as she struggled to pull herself together.
The sirens continued to blare in the distance.
Tov felt wrung out.
Her head was too heavy to hold up on her own, so she leaned over to let it rest on Elias’s shoulder.
He didn’t seem to mind.
Prem handed her a tissue from his side pocket kit.
She wiped her nose as best she could.
A few more moments passed in silence before Tov spoke.
“What now?” She asked, her voice thick.
“Now, we wait.” Elias said. “It’ll all be over before you know it.”
As Tov closed her eyes and slowed her breathing, she couldn’t help but think he meant more than just the lockdown.
————————————————————
Tov won and Jae escaped!! Everything should be good now, right?
… Right?
Well, Tov has some complicated feelings about it. She’s relieved Jae escaped and that Evon is alive because she really doesn’t want anyone else to die.
But part of her is almost envious that they were saved when so many others weren’t, including some of the people Tov was closest to (Himei, Moran, Flor, etc.). She’s also angry that any of them had to be in this position to die like this in the first place.
At least Elias and Prem were there to comfort her. I think Tov would’ve spiraled even worse if they didn’t stay with her. I lobe my boys 🥹
Jae and Evon belong to @kofeedoggo.
Nyx belongs to @rockwgooglyeyes.

I was just curious to know if you had any idea of the opera Shuri went to in her flashback was based on a real-life opera? Because the woman dying (possibly due to some sort of common folk uprising if I’m remembering the panels correctly) and what I’m assuming is her lover crying over her kind of makes me think of Shuri from TL1. But then again, a man mourning over his lost lover is just very Johannes and Ludovika.
hmmmmm i've said that history isn't my strong point and classic opera has such a loooong long history, it'd be pretty difficult to even narrow down the possible options.
There really isn't much to go off of in the manhwa either 🤔 but i have an idea i'm mildly confident about (spoiler warning)
first off, we do know a few things about the opera from the manhwa:
it's a famous play from anywhere between the 17th-19th century
there's some sort of face off between two men
it's a tragedy where the heroine dies at the end
it occurs during Shuri's flashback where Johannes abuses her
Which leads me to think that the play mentioned was Othello. Let's review the connections
it was an immensely popular opera by William Shakespeare from the early 17th century
it is largely about the discourse between Othello and Iago, a military commander and his junior officer. Othello promotes another officer (Cassio) instead of Iago, which kickstarts his path of vengeance against Othello.
Iago uses Othello's wife, Desdemona, as a tool to strike his revenge. In a jealous fit of rage, Othello winds up murdering Desdemona and then himself.
we can assume that the tragedy was foreshadowing the events that would take place later that night. Johannes (Othello) beating Shuri (Desdemona) in a jealous and delusional outburst over the necklace she received from a mysterious 3rd party (Iago). And of course, Johannes would end up collapsing by the end of it.
some discrepencies:
the setting doesn't really match. the opera in the manhwa suggests that the story takes place in France around the 17th century, but Othello takes place in Cyprus in the 16th century. The fashion between the two plays are just entirely different.
Desdemona isn't really the main character of the play, unlike what the manhwa's opera suggests. But it could also just be ORKA giving Desdemona a spotlight to make the connection between her and Shuri.
the uprising you mentioned. i couldn't find where it mentions an uprising in the manhwa, but there isn't one in Othello
if anyone has any other suggestions, please share! This is just my (very uneducated) guess!

Old Jonathan Bailey’s interview with the OxfordMail (2013)

BROADCHURCH star Jonathan Bailey has paid tribute to his former English teacher for inspiring his acting career.
The 25-year-old former Oxford schoolboy, who played newspaper reporter Olly Stevens in the smash-hit crime thriller, also said reading his own local newspapers – the Oxford Mail and The Wallingford Herald – helped him prepare for the role.
Mr Bailey, from Brightwell-cum-Sotwell, near Wallingford, fondly remembers reading Shakespeare in the sixth form at Oxford’s Magdalen College School with Dr David Brunton, who died in March 2007 after falling from the tower of the University Church of St Mary the Virgin Church in High Street.
Mr Bailey, who is now playing Cassio in the National Theatre production of Othello, told the Mail: “He was a brilliant man who taught us Othello for A-Level. I’d read it out loud in class with him playing Iago, so it is a fitting tribute to a fantastic teacher that I’m now playing Cassio.”
In Broadchurch, the former Benson Primary School pupil worked opposite top actors including David Tennant and Pauline Quirke.
His character, a junior reporter for the fictional Broadchurch Echo, finds himself in the middle of a murder investigation.
Mr Bailey said: “The Oxford Mail and The Wallingford Herald were of course my inspiration. Growing up in Benson I always read The Wallingford Herald – it was always on the kitchen table. The sense of community that is thrust into the home by local papers is so important.”
The ITV series drew in more than nine million viewers every week and had viewers on the edges of their seats until the murderer was revealed in the final episode, broadcast on April 22.
Filming for a second series is due to start next year.
Mr Bailey, who has also appeared in the popular Oxford detective drama Lewis, said: “In terms of Broadchurch’s success, I am totally shocked. It is great to be a part of something everyone wants to carry on watching.”
Mr Bailey’s father Stuart Bailey, former managing director of Rowse Honey in Wallingford, said: “We believe that it is important to follow your dream and are naturally very proud of Jonathan and what he has achieved. We were totally hooked on Broadchurch and looked forward to watching it every Monday evening.”
He added: “It is great that Jonathan was part of such a popular TV series and that Othello is proving so successful at the National.”
Alan Cooper, who has taught at Oxford’s Magdalen College School for 32 years, said: “Dr Brunton had a brilliant way of making Shakespeare come alive. He would be absolutely delighted. He was always very fond of Shakespeare. He would be thrilled that someone would be able to take that to the theatre.”
Of Mr Bailey, Mr Cooper added: “He is quietly successful. He clearly works hard and is very deserving of success.”

I saw that no one chose [2]Shakespeare for your prompt fics. I admit I have gone overboard (because I love Shakespeare), so you can do whatever you want. Choose one, pick whichever sparks joy or completely ignore this. Here goes
1. Richard ii - A III. 2 let us sit upon the ground (jgy having a breakdown before the Guanyin temple scene)
- A IV. 1 Alack, why am I sent for to a king, deposition scene (JC convinces WWX to surrender himself instead of WQ+WN and a trial at Jinlintai ensues)
- A V. 5 I have been studying how I may compare/This prison where I live unto the world (WWX in the burial mounds)
2. Jin Ling as Hamlet (because his uncle murdered his father, see)
-A III. 1 Good my lord,/How does your honor for this many a day? (...) Oh, woe is me,/T' have seen what I have seen, see what I see! (WWX as Yílíng Laozu tries to push LWJ away)
3. Much Ado About Nothing (JC/Beatrice + Huaisang/Benedick - A III. 2-3 either one of the trick scenes)
4. Romeo and Juliet A III. 2 Give me my Romeo; and, when he shall die,/Take him and cut him out in little stars,/And he will make the face of heaven so fine/That all the world will be in love with night/And pay no worship to the garish sun. (XY & XXC)
5. A Midsummer Night's Dream - based on this Sam Rockwell scene from the 1999 film https://youtu.be/1TiNAYpVVr4 (some kind of reincarnation au vibes, where XY and XXC are amateur actors, and playing the suicide scene knocks something loose in his head)
- A III. 2 “Puppet”? Why so?—Ay, that way goes the game. fight scene (the juniors idk who the smallest in height is, but Jin Ling does seem to have a similar fiery temper; a night-hunt gone wrong maybe because of some interfering spirits)
6. Titus Andronicus - A II. 4; A III. 1; A V. 3 An if your Highness knew my heart, you were.—/My lord the Emperor, resolve me this (XXC discovers SL's mutilated body before it's turned into a fierce corpse and he kinda snaps)
7. MacBeth - A III. 4 banquet scene (jgy sees the ghost of NMJ)
-A V. 1 away damned spot (LXC in seclusion)
8. The Taming of the Shrew (instead of throwing him in the Burial Mounds, WC takes WWX with him and psychologically torments him with the same tactics as Petruchio; plot-twist: instead of being tamed, WWX kills him, because I hate TTOTS)
9. Othello A III. 3 (Othello/NMJ; Desdemona/LXC ; Iago/JGY; Cassio/NZH)
- A V. 2 It is the cause, it is the cause, my soul. - Oh, the more angel she,/And you the blacker devil!(...) I have another weapon in this chamber, - Oh, Desdemona! Desdemona! dead! Oh! Oh! (...) Soft you, a word or two before you go.-I kissed thee ere I killed thee. No way but this,/Killing myself, to die upon a kiss. (to DESDEMONA) I kissed you before I killed you. Now, killing myself, I’m dying while I kiss you again. Kisses DESDEMONA, dies (established relationship; JC realizes what NHS did at Guanyin temple and all the scheming before and is driven to murder)
10. Tom Stoppard's Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead "Two ELIZABETHANS passing the time in a place without any visible character.bThey are well dressed—hats, cloaks, sticks and all. Each of them has a large leather money bag. GUILDENSTERN’s bag is nearly empty. ROSENCRANTZ’s bag is nearly full. The reason being: they are betting on the toss of a coin. (...) It would have been nice to have unicorns."+" Do you ever think of yourself as actually dead, lying in a box with a lid on it? (...) Eternity is a terrible thought. I mean, Where’s it going to end?" (JGY and XY in the afterlife, but they don't know it)
-"We could play at questions. (...) Yet he sent for us. And we did come." (JGY +NHS)
Now that's what I call a prompt! It was fun to have so many to choose from and to look at the different parallels you drew. I might be doing another, but this was the one that really caught my eye. Hope you like it!
(also on ao3 if you prefer to read there)
[gen; Lan Xichen; references to Macbeth; guilt and sleepwalking and blood]
- Spot -
In his sleep, Xichen walked.
There was nobody to see it, secluded as he was, and he himself was not aware. He only knew that he was tired every day, as tired as if he'd risen from his bed and paced back and forth for hours on end. The weariness felt fitting, though. He didn't deserve to sleep well.
He tried not to think about it. He spent a lot of his time now trying not to think about things; sometimes he succeeded.
Each night he went to bed at the prescribed time and lay staring into the darkness. Despite his weariness he always struggled to fall asleep - and the sleeplessness seemed to perpetuate itself. The longer he lay there, unsleeping, the less likely sleep became. Sometimes he didn't sleep until the room was turning grey with the approach of dawn, and sometimes he didn't sleep at all.
But when he did sleep there was no rest in it, and this was why: he would rise without waking and walk circles around the boundary of the home that had become a prison.
"Yet here," he mumbled, on one such night, words slurred and changing from dull to desperate and back again. "A spot!"
He wrung his hands together. He paced. If one were to look they might notice, as the months of his seclusion turned to years, the wearing of a path around the boundaries of the rooms: from door to bed, from bed to desk, from desk to door and around again. And again. And again.
"Hell is murky - out, damned spot! Who would have thought a man would have so much blood in him?"
He held up his hands as though to stare at them, though of course he saw nothing - or if he dreamed, perhaps in the dream he saw the stain of the guilt that lay upon them. Certainly the image of it haunted his waking hours. He was supposed to be spending this time in meditation, this seclusion, but each time he closed his eyes he saw his sworn-brother again and felt the hot spray of blood over his hands.
"No more of that," the sleepwalker told himself, soothing. "No more of - oh, but here's the smell of the blood, still! What perfume could sweeten this? Will these hands never be clean?"
His distressed cry rang out like a bird's call through the night. There was nobody to hear it. The elders of his sect slept easily with the weight of their decisions.
"Wash your hands," he said. His tone was gentle, as if he spoke to another, one he wished more kindness on than he would in waking choose to offer to himself. "Wash them and put on a clean robe. Look not so pale. He's buried! He cannot come out from his grave! Wash your hands."
There was no water in the wash-bowl but he knelt at it anyway and, as if enacting some elaborate mime, scrubbed at his hands. Come morning the skin would be red and raw - but there was nobody to notice how his hands troubled him now, and he did his best not to wonder why.
It didn't matter. What did he need his hands for? Let them ache. Let the skin crack and the joints swell. All his hands were good for any more were a weight when they sat folded in his lap, when he stared at nothing and feigned serenity.
"To bed now," he told himself then, rising with freshly-aching hands and eyes still unseeing. "Come, come, come - what's done cannot be undone. Dawn approaches. To bed."
And on the next night, and the one that followed, and on and on, he would rise to repeat the performance: pacing, scrubbing, muttering. Murmuring in distress but providing, too, the consolation that there was nobody else to offer.
Perhaps one day he would believe that he deserved forgiveness.

As a recently qualified junior lawyer in England and Wales I can tell you the world of law is weird - one example:
Did you know what a list of the key people in the case prepared by legal counsel is called in court litigation proceedings?
A dramatis personae.
It’s like we’re all some kind of Shakespearean AU where the judge asks what a person’s role is in the whole play and the prosecution is like “well my lord, he wanted to be Cassio but I respectfully submit to you that the evidence points towards him being Iago”

New Kid (Billy Hargrove X F!Reader)
Howdy, here is chapter three of New Kid. I’m slow at writing but I try my best for you all.
Summary: You’re new in Hawkins, hailing from the big city on the east coast. As a city kid, you think you’ve been stuck here to suffer in a small town, but there’s a certain someone who shakes it all up.
Warnings: Smoking, swearing. The usual.
Taglist: @salemlysi @asheseiler
You turned around, pivoting on the balls of your feet. You met Billy’s gaze, taken aback by how blue his eyes are. Your heartbeat quickened at the sight of him. You took a deep breath in, exhaling slowly in an attempt to assuage it.
“Sure. What do you wanna talk about?” You asked him. He takes a small step towards you.
“What the hell was that earlier today? In the cafeteria?”
You pursed your lips, letting a sigh escape from your nose. “It wasn’t obvious? I didn’t want you thinking you could kick my friends ass in a lunchroom brawl and be able to get away with it. Consider it.. my way of de-escalating the situation.” He ran his fingers through his hair, the slightest flush of embarrassment spreading across his cheeks.
“How is he your friend? You literally just met him today.”
“First impressions are everything. He showed me, a new kid and total stranger, kindness. That’s why he’s my friend.” You turn away from him to open and unlock your car door to leave the parking lot. You got in, shut the door, and pushed the key into the ignition, revving your engine.
Rolling down your window, you leave Billy with one last message. “If you even think of so much as laying a finger on him again, your ass is grass. Watch your toes, pretty boy.”
Billy steps back as you peel out of the parking lot, AC/DC playing out of your car stereo. He remembers what you had told him earlier, perched atop your trunk:
“Being nice gets you the things you want.”
---
You pull into the driveway, your dads car already there. Unlocking the front door, you took off your shoes and shut the door. Your father was in the kitchen, reading the paper with his feet resting on the table.
“Hey Dad!” You greeted him with a smile. “Get your feet off the table, we eat there!” You laugh, setting your stuff down on the ground and sitting next to him.
He set aside the local newspaper, giving you his full attention. “Hey, kiddo. How was your first day today? Make any friends?”
“Just one. His name is Steve, he’s pretty cool. Plays basketball for the school.” You continue. “He almost got beat up today. Today was kind of strange.”
Your dad raises his eyebrows, looking a bit concerned. You then go on to give him a play-by-play of your day, not leaving out any key points of the day.
“And there’s this boy thats kinda been on my back all day. Name’s Billy. He’s got a mullet and thinks he’s like.. Hot shit. He tried to fight Steve at lunch today, but I got him to lay off.”
Your dad sends you a concerned look. “And how did you do that, sweetpea?”
“I got him right on the pressure point right above the collarbone and told him to leave Steve alone. It worked!”
He chuckles, shaking his head and getting up to go ruffle your hair. “You are your mothers child. I’m going down to my study to finish editing some articles for the paper. If you have homework, and I know you do, now is your time to play catch up.”
“Wait! Dad. That kid, Billy?” He listened. “He’s uh.. persistent.”
“What do you mean, ‘persistent’?”
“He keeps on egging me on. Flirting? I don’t know what it is. It’s annoying. Boys are annoying.”
He chuckles. “I know, kiddo. If it gets worse, you let me know.”
You smile at him as he steps out and goes down to his study, which was the basement. You took out your work and began studying for that english quiz.
In the midst of your studies, you hear a knock at the door. Confused, you hesitantly walk to the front door. Opening it slowly, you only begin to get more confused.
“Steve? What the hell? How do you know where I live?”
“I live like.. three houses down from you. I recognized the car, thought I’d stop by and visit my friend.”
“Oh, cool! Well that’s nice of you. Do you want to come in?” You opened the door, allowing Steve to enter your house. Steve walks in, taking in the view of your house.
“Nice place (y/n)! It’s so quiet though. No sisters, brothers?”
“Yeah no, I’m an only child. It’s just me and my dad.”
As if on cue, your dad comes up from his study, his reading glasses perched on the bridge of his nose. He looks at you, then at Steve, then back to you. He raises an eyebrow at you.
“(y/n), who is this?”
You chuckle lightly. “Dad, this is Steve. He’s my new friend, and our neighbor. He lives three houses down from us.”
Steve extends his hand for a handshake. “Nice to meet you, uh, Mister (y/n)’s dad.”
Your dad lets out a hearty laugh, returning to Steve with a firm handshake. “Nice to meet you, Steve. I appreciate the formality, but no need for it.”
“Alright, is it okay if I call you pop?”
“Fine with me.” He chuckles. “If you two will excuse me, I’m going to go back down to my office and finish my work. These papers won’t edit themselves, you know.” He gives one little wave and descends down into his study.
You sit back down at the kitchen table, Steve following behind you. He puts his bag at an empty seat and began to take out his english notebook.
“Aw, you wanna be my study buddy?” You smiled at Steve.
“Yeah, I need help understanding what the hell this Shakespeare guy is saying. I don’t speak this kind of english.”
“Alright, I got you. Don’t sweat it.” You go over your notes and explain/translate Othello to Steve for two long hours.
“Do you get it now? Do you see why Iago got Cassio drunk?” You say, watching the gears tinker around in Steve’s brain. You can see the light bulb above his head turn on. “(y/n), you’re a GENIUS! You’re the best. Now I can hopefully pass that quiz Mister Kowalski is giving us tomorrow.”
You groaned at the thought of the quiz. “What gives? I just got here and I’m swamped! Ms. McCarthy and the math teacher are the only ones giving me some wiggle room.”
Steve laughs. “I told you he was a dick, you just didn’t believe me!” He begins to pack his bags in order to get ready to go home, before it got too dark.
“Oh hey! (y/n), what are you doing tomorrow night?” Steve asks, grinning.
“I don’t know. Chemistry? Why, what’s going on?”
“Uh, wrong answer, nerd. Come with me and Nancy to this party tomorrow. It’ll be good for you. I promise.”
You furrow your eyebrows at him. “Um. Who’s Nancy?”
“Oh! Yeah right! You haven’t met her yet, she wasn’t at school the day you came. Nancy is my girlfriend. She’s the best.” Steve said admiringly, a light flush on his cheeks as he thought about his girlfriend. You thought it was so cute seeing Steve get all soft about his girl.
“Well, she sounds lovely. I can’t wait to meet her.” You give a kind smile to Steve, and he returns it to you.
Steve zips his bag up and slings it over his shoulder, almost out the door. “Hey, wait a sec. You never answered my question!”
“What was it again?”
“Party tomorrow. Are you coming?”
“Hm.. yeah sure. I’m game.” Steve celebrates with a quiet but excited yes! “Only on the condition you’re my ride. I refuse to drive my car when I’m going to a party.”
Steve nodded understandingly. “Whatever it takes for you to have a good time. I gotcha. See you tomorrow (y/n)!” Steve gives you a quick hug and you see him out the door. What a nice kid, you thought to yourself. You gathered your things and went upstairs to your room, getting ready to take a shower and read yourself to sleep, eager for tomorrow to come.
--
Tomorrow morning came and you walked into Mr. Kowalski’s class on time. You decided to wear a white pleated skirt that stopped just above your knees, your dads old knit green sweater with a white collared shirt underneath, white bobby socks and black oxfords. Your hair was tied up into a tight ponytail with a white scrunchie. You walked over to the same seat you had been in, right next to Hawkins High resident jackass.
Billy eyed you up and down, taking in your entire outfit like he’d never see it again. He liked how your ponytail would sway and bob with your motions, and how your skirt flounced with every step you took. He wanted to know what you really looked like, underneath all the baggy layers you’d wear.
“Good morning, (y/n). You look nice today.” Billy gave way to a soft smile, raising one of his eyebrows.
You were taken aback for a second. Billy Hargrove, addressing you by your name and not one of the pet names that he likes to use? Whats next, he throws a hanky over wet puddles for you to walk across so your feet don’t get wet?
You wish.
“Good morning Billy. And thank you, I appreciate the compliment.” You smoothed out your skirt to take your seat properly.
“You ready for this quiz?” He asked, trying to initiate small talk.
“Duh. I’m always ready.” You joke, pretending to brush dust off of your shoulder. This gets a chuckle out of Billy, and you get to see his smile. His perfect white smile, with plump pink lips to match. Talk about an oral fixation. “In all honesty though, at my old school we read Othello as juniors, not seniors. So I’m pretty confident. Are you ready, though?”
“Hell no I’m not.” You chuckle and shake your head as Mr. Kowalski hands out the quiz. You skim the questions on the quiz. Piece of cake.
“Okay class! The quizzes are out. No talking, no noise. When you are done, come to my desk and put it in the bin. When you finish, you may use your free time as a study hall or to do silent activities. You may begin.”
Once he finishes talking, you write in your answers, confident in yourself. You look over to your left and see Billy trying his best. You half-smile at him and peek in the back corner to see Steve. Steve is writing so hard and fast you swore you saw the end of his pencil steaming. You got back to your own quiz, finishing it in record time. You double-checked your answers, and got up to turn it in.
You were the first in the class to finish. Billy lost his focus when he heard you shift from out of your seat to go up to the teachers desk. He was fixed on your gait. He liked watching you walk, how your hips swayed, and how you stuck your pencil behind your ear as you talked to the teacher.
You returned to your seat and took out a sheet of chemistry practice problems and began working on them. The more you do now, the less you have to do later, right?
Not too long after, Billy goes up to hand in his quiz to the teacher. His heavy boots resonated through the classroom, taking your attention away from your work. You watch him walk up to the desk, sandy blonde curls bouncing ever so slightly with his gait. He had on blue Levi’s 501 jeans that fit him perfectly, cupping his ass and shaping it well. You had to admit it, he’s a hot guy. Would you tell him? Absolutely not.
He turns around and walks back to his desk to take his seat, shooting you a wink before he sat back down. Other students were still testing. He took out a piece of paper and started writing. He folds the paper and tosses it on your desk. Hearing the little plip of paper land on your desk, you raise an eyebrow and unfold it to read the message.
What are you doing tonight?
You write back, Going out to a party. Steve’s giving me a ride there. You re-folded the note and tossed it on his desk. He opens it, scoffs and writes back.
Lame, should’ve came with me instead. I hope I’ll be seeing you there.
You rolled your eyes and chuckled. You looked at him and nodded your head, confirming you’d be there. He smirked at you, and shot you one last wink. As the last student handed in their quiz, the bell went off. “Alright, class dismissed! And no homework for the weekend.”
The rest of your classes came and went, and soon it was lunch again. You looked across the room to look for Steve, but to no avail. Until someone tapped your shoulder, causing you to jump.
“Woah (y/n)! Chill out. It’s just me! Steve.” He laughs. “You should’ve seen your face!”
“Dude! Don’t sneak up on me like that. Not cool!” You chuckle, going to sit at the lunch table with him. Another girl comes and sits next to him, kissing him on the cheek. “Hi Steve!”
“Hey, Nance. (y/n), this is Nancy, my girlfriend. Nancy, this is (y/n), she’s new here, new to Hawkins.” Steve introduces the two of you.
Nancy was shorter than Steve, with brown hair and big eyes, like Bambi. She was cute, and you thought her and Steve made a lovely couple.
“Hey (y/n), are you going to that party tonight?” Nancy asked.
“Yeah, I am!”
Steve interjects, “She’s only going because I’m going to go pick her up. She lives like.. three houses down from me. And she doesn’t wanna drive her hot rod.”
“Hot rod?” Nancy asked, confused. “What kind of car do you have?”
You shrugged. “A ‘67 Ford Mustang. It’s blue. And I’m not driving it because I plan on getting absolutely trashed.”
Nancy nodded. “Fair enough. I’m going to be at Steve’s getting ready, and we’ll come and get you tonight, say around eight?”
“Sounds good to me!”
---
You’re in the library for your last period, study hall. You had just finished catching up with the last of your chemistry work, so that meant you had no pending responsibilities for the weekend and it sure did feel good. You packed your bag and headed out the front door, headed towards your car in the parking lot. You see Billy’s car right next to yours, with him leaning on the back of his Camaro.
“Shouldn’t you be in class or something, Billy?” You asked him.
“I could be asking you the same question, bookworm.”
You giggled at the nickname. “If you must know, hot-shot, I finished all my work and I have a study hall for my last period. Surely they won’t mind if I leave early.”
“Then that makes the two of us, gorgeous.” He smirks at you, offering a cigarette. You accept it, as you begin to pull out your lighter he whips out his zippo lighter. You hold your mouth with the cigarette over the flame, taking a breath in.
“Thanks, Billy.” You said, exhaling the smoke.
“No problem. Thought it was only fair, you let me bum one of yours.” He continued, “So, you’re really coming to that party?”
“Yes dude! I am. Steve is picking me up from my house. I’m not driving.”
“And why is that?”
“Because I plan on getting absolutely wasted.”
This gets a good laugh out of Billy. “In that case, I guess I’ll see you tonight gorgeous.” He winks at you and gets into his car.
Your cheeks flushed when Billy called you gorgeous. You wondered if he had noticed.

A/N: Here’s chapter three as promised! Hope you enjoy reading it just as much as I enjoy writing it. If you like it let me know! I’m here for you.

Al Duhail go down to Al Taawoun, bow out of AFC Champions League
[caption id="attachment_5f6d0986bd9f9" align="aligncenter" width="1100" caption=""][/caption]
Qatari league champions Al Duhail bowed out of the 2020 AFC Champions League after going down fighting to Saudi Arabia’s Al Taawoun through a late goal in their Round 6 match in Group C at the Education City Stadium on Thursday.
Iran’s Persepolis and Al Taawoun progressed to the knockout Round of 16 as the first and second team with 10 and nine points respectively from Group C.
Persepolis beat Sharjah 4-0 in the other Group C fixture on Thursday.
Al Duhail too had nine points, but Al Taawoun made the cut on head-to-head record with the Qatari side.
The two sides had met on Matchday 2, when Al Taawoun scored a 2-0 home win courtesy of goals from Mohamed Al Sahlawi and Abdulmajeed Al Swat.
This time around, Mitchell Duke struck the all-important goal in the 86th minute for Al Taawoun.
The first half was cagey and featured missed chances by Mohammed Musa, Edmilson Junior and Dudu for Al Duhail as well as Cedric Amissi for the Buraidah based side. Deep into stoppage time in the first half, Cassio expertly denied Almoez Ali who struck from the left.
Junior threatened 55 minutes in, and after a break by his side, the cut inside from the left flank beating two players before curling an effort in from range that Cassio gratefully clutched into his arms.
Amissi got another chance to make his mark on proceedings when he attempted a free-kick on goal, after team-mate Al Sahlawi was fouled down the flank. Amissi’s shot was timid, and keeper Mohammed Al Bakri punched away with ease.
The match exploded into life in the final 10 minutes, with Al Duhail missing a golden chance to open the scoring through Ismail Mohammed, who was through on goal with just the keeper to beat and chipped, but substitute Saad Yaslam managed to reach the ball and clear off the line.
A bandaged Duke then dramatically sealed the tie for Al Taawoun after breaking free from his marker in the area to meet Sultan Mandash’s corner and put the ball past Al Bakri.

"The robb'd that smiles steals something from the thief..."
____
Book: The Tragedy of Othello, the Moor of Venice by William Shakespeare
Genre: Tragedy/Play, Classic
Synopsis: A jealous officer plants seeds of doubt in his commander, with fatal consequences.
TL;DR: *shaking my head at all these fools*
[[MORE]]
I can hear it now: "Your first Shakespeare? How'd you manage THAT?" Social anxiety that led to an unconventional education in which I bypassed the first two years of high school with independent study and the next two years with junior college, that's how!
Moving on: yes, this is my first reading of Shakespeare, though not my first exposure. I'm not going to lie and pretend I'm cultivated; the language made me sooooooo sleepy, and I did, once or twice, fall asleep on this book. I didn't hate it, though. While it WAS a lackluster pillow, it WAS NOT a lackluster story. Scheming, politics, drama, romance(?), murder, betrayal, all of it can be found in Othello
I think, like with most things one is unfamiliar with, it takes some time to get comfortable and to find your footing, but once I managed that, the story was compelling enough to keep me turning the pages. I spent a great deal of time tsk-ing throughout, cheering on Emilia's progressive attitude and championing of Desdemona, cackling at Iago's malice, lamenting Othello's gullibility, and pitying Cassio and Desdemona. I didn't feel any sort of regard for most of the characters, though Emilia stands out for her challenging of women's roles and expectations throughout. Nevertheless,I was keen to see how the story would resolve itself, so...
'Twas my first shot at Shakespeare, but not my last.
I shall give this "Bard of Avon" another chance.

Goleiros do Brasil
Caio Cordeiro Beltran

This robot automatically sorts and prices cards from Magic: The Gathering
If you’ve ever dabbled in collectible card games — Magic: The Gathering, Pokémon, etc. — you know how quickly collections can grow. One pack turns into two. Two turns into five. Then they release some new set and… screw it, why not buy a whole box?
Card resellers have the same problem, just magnified to an extreme. People who’ve stopped playing a game for whatever reason (sometimes years prior) walk in with massive collections and just want to get rid of them. Online resellers and card stores can end up with monstrous stockpiles of unsorted cards, and going through them requires a ton of time and a wealth of ultra specific knowledge of a game. Which cards are rare? Which ones are a bit more common, but useful enough that players would want to buy them for their decks? What are they all worth?
Sorting Robotics, a company in Y-Combinator’s Winter 2019 class, has built a robot laser-focused on that problem. You load it with up to 1000 Magic cards, and it’ll automatically sort them to your liking, look up their values, and give you all the data in a big spreadsheet.
The machine is able to sort by a bunch of different criteria, be it alphabetically, by the set a card is from, or by its resale value (as pulled from TCGPlayer.) Want a big pile of all of the cards worth over $1? It can do that. If you need them sorted other ways, the company is open to helping with custom sorting logic.
One challenge the team had to tackle early on was how to handle cards with minimal contact for the sake of preventing possible damage. Some Magic cards, after all, resell for hundreds or thousands of dollars — if their machines got a reputation for damaging cards even occasionally, no one would use it.
So Sorting came up with a pneumatic system that uses cameras, computer vision, polished surfaces, and silicone suction cups to identify and move cards from stack to stack with limited contact. There are a few fancy tricks involved, like picking up cards in a way that utilizes the airflow within the machine to keep it from lifting two lightly-stuck-together cards at once. If a card is loaded into the machine upside down, it’ll shift it into a pile with other upside down cards to be manually flipped and re-sorted later. Sorting 1000 cards takes 1-2 hours, depending on the criteria they’re being sorted by.
If a card does somehow get damaged, Sorting Robotics says they’ll cover the cost. (They’ll want to check the feed from a pair of cameras inside the machine to see exactly what happened, so you probably shouldn’t go throwing an already-bent up Time Walk card in there and asking for reimbursement.)
Another challenge: dirt. Even for collectors, cards are rarely 100% pristine. There’s the natural oils from your hand, the dust from being stored over time, and even some amount of the card’s own dust, left over from the printing and cutting process. You might not really notice it if you’re just dealing with your own collection — but when you’re putting thousands of cards through a machine with moving parts and camera lenses, the dust adds up fast. Later versions of their machine have been re-tailored to deal with dust, and to be more easily maintained when the dust builds up.
Sorting has three founders: Nohtal Partansky and Sean Lawler (both of whom were previously Systems Engineers at NASA’s Jet Propulsion lab), and Cassio Elias dos Santos Junior, a computer vision engineer who previously built a popular Magic card scanning app for Android.
As for how much it costs, the company would only say that it’s working on that on a case-by-case, shop-by-shop basis. They stressed that they’re focusing on building these for online resellers and card shops — so it sounds like it’s not in the price range that most hobbyists might consider.
The machine currently only sorts Magic cards, though the founders tell me support for Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokémon cards is coming shortly.
