Under the water

Nothing special, I just once again greedily and with pleasure “eat” the scene under water. [episode 8]

DFQC and XLH`s figures are intertwined into one silhouette, as if they are one whole right now. They are now in complete seclusion. How is it that he allows her to be so close to him? He never let anyone touch him. Nobody would dare to do it. But only she dares to hug him again, and for the second time he does not push her away from him. He lets XLH hold onto him tightly, while it can be noted that the edge of his lips slightly touches her forehead.

She would feel his breath if they weren't surrounded by water on all sides. What does he feel at this moment? Does he feel her emotions? Of course, he is unhappy with her stupid actions. Because of her, he is now here and wasting his time on her. But as long as she is in his field of vision, then everything is fine. If she wants to hug him, then let her do it as much as she wants, as long as she does not interfere with him, he will not do anything to her. And then she abruptly pushes him away from her. Why did she do it? What a fool! And what is she going to do now? What is she even thinking about?

Well, he doesn't mind watching where it takes her.

DFQC's actions seem to say that this is probably good for him. This Xiaohuayao is so annoying. All the time he must experience her worthless, constantly changing emotions that irritate him so much … How nice it would be if she went to the bottom, and the deeper the better. She would have gone out of his life, out of his mind and out of his feelings. Forever. He so wants to never see or hear her. And so that she would take this damned curse with her down to the bottom, into the abyss. Nothing would bother him anymore, and not irritate.  After then everything would return to normal, and nothing else will stop him.

She moves further and further away from him… The distance between them increases. She sinks into where he would have sent her in parts from the very beginning, if only he could.

XLH holds out a hand to him. DFQC keeps doing nothing. Does he feel compassion for her? Why should he feel compassion for her? And what is “compassion” anyway?

But that's the last thing she does. She doesn't move anymore. She no longer has the energy to fight for her life. Her body is now completely subject to water. She's so incapable. But no matter how much he wants to let her go where it is deep and dark, he still needs her, because she is precious to him. That's what he told her a few minutes ago, and unfortunately for him, this is the truth. To him, she is much more precious ass his life.  After all, his life depends on this, damned, Xiaohuayao, grass.  And she still has to fix the damn destiny book for him.

DFQC takes a breath at the hopelessness of his situation. He has no choice. He needs to save her again… What a pity he can't do the opposite. But she must live. Well, okay. So be it. He will save her again.

Gracefully and charmingly, DFQC swims up to her, closing the distance between them. (Magic show!)

His image at this moment inspires fear and awe, as if he were a predatory killer whale, but he does not intend to cause her even the slightest harm. Gently and carefully, as far as possible, as if trying not to harm her with his careless movement, he cupping the back of XLH ’s head, pulls her to him and touches her lips with his lips.

He kisses her tenderly, and in doing so he breathes life into her, a life that belongs to him alone. XLH opens her eyes.

He feels a sudden resistance from her. He, too, resists her for a split second, but… But XLH pushes him away again, thus cutting off the connection between them.

How dare she interrupt him like that! This makes him very angry and pissed off. Well, what the hell? What is she doing again? And why does he feel so intolerable about it? And that look of hers…

She looks at him with her innocent and pure eyes. So what is she trying to say when she looks at him like that? What is her plan this time? And what should he do? Should he do what she wants?

But no. This time, he won't let her move even a meter or an inch away from him.

She belongs to him. Whether she lives or dies is up to him to decide. His gaze calms down, and he again draws her lips to his.

She is now his. He possesses her right now like never before. What does he feel? Does he feel her emotions at this time? This Xiaohuayao is in his submission and does not dare to resist him anymore. What did she just say? She says she pushed him away not because she was afraid that… She was afraid of what? Did he do something that she should have been afraid of? He so lacks the dead calm that had him before. These excitements of hers, which he is now experiencing, are not pleasant to him. Of course, it's all because of her. If not for this Xilan Curse, he would now be calm as the surface of the water.

But for some reason, he still feels something warmer on his lips than the golden rays of the warm, outgoing sun, which right now illuminate and hopelessly try to warm him. He still feels the presence of her sweet lips on his lips. He wished he could feel that touch again. It's all so stir his blood so much. He not only does not want to resist this, but is also ready to humbly submit to this growing feeling. What is this feeling that grows in him? Breathing life into her, he, too, seemed to be filled with life.

The wonderful thing about LBFAD to me is the subversion of the tropes that you usually only get in fanfiction and the fact that it doesn’t drag and it’s not over the top.

We have enemies to lovers, but with a clever twist that the female lead doesn’t know that it’s enemies-to-lovers for about the first third of the show.

We have slow burn, but it doesn’t drag so much that you lose interest and there’s this shimmering attraction and chemistry from the 2nd episode on.

We have misunderstandings but they don’t last for more than 1-2 episodes because DFQC and XLH actually do have good reasons for those misunderstanding and conflicts considering their positions and how new they’re both to the feelings. And they both think about their feelings and each other’s feelings and try to figure it out, instead of just acting out of stubbornness and anger. And, yes, they can both be petty and unreasonable and jealous, but they never purposefully hurt each other because of it.

We have ‘I would break up with you to save you’ but it’s written so well, that it doesn’t seem like a completely stupid selfish decision AND the best part – the other person doesn’t buy it.

And all those tropes and subversions, they don’t drag. My problem with many Asian drama, especially cdrama, is that suffering is kind of fetishized for my taste? Like it goes on and on and on, and the few moments of happiness aren’t enough to make up for it. Especially in cdramas, it’s sometimes an everlasting circle of pain and love-hate where the ML and FL just keep hurting each other. To the point that I just end up thinking that they should not be together.

LBFAD in contrast is a beautiful example of gradual character development for both of the main leads. And just as their emotional awareness and emotional intelligence develop, so do their relationship.

THINKING about one of my favorite lines of DFQC's:

你一天长珩长 长珩短，你满脑子除了长珩还有什么？

Utterly untranslatable. I despair.

DFQC is pretty good at wordplay and, um, I guess you could call it figurative speech. The occasional proverb will appear in his dialogue to devastating effect (eg, eg, eg). He's a smart guy, and it shows in his speech patterns, even if "clever" isn't one of his main character traits. His diction has a certain force of imagery and pithiness to it.

The dialogue above is from Episode 10, after he shows her the new Simingdian he built, and she begs to be let go to Shuiyuntian. Xiao Lanhua says something to the effect of, "I'll never tell anyone of your whereabouts. Even if Changheng-xianjun himself asks."

Dongfang Qingcang blows up, accusing her of being obsessed with Changheng.

All day long, it's 长珩长 长珩短 with you. Is there anything other than Changheng in your brain?

To understand the untranslated part, you have to break Changheng down into its component parts: The first, 长 cháng, means "long." The second, 珩 héng, is a jade ornament thing. This one isn't that important, it's just the second character in his name. The last character in the untranslated part is 短 duǎn, meaning "short."

Put together, the six characters are pronounced cháng-héng-cháng cháng-héng-duǎn: "Changheng long, Changheng short." Meaning, of course, "Changheng, Changheng all the time (do you ever talk about anything else)." Except he played on the 长 cháng character to do it, giving it a pleasing rhythm to the ear!

SO!! i read the book version of cang lan jue, The Demon King, as translated by banana chocolate cosmos.

I'm not an expert but I believe it was translated into Singlish? There's a few -la, -ah, and en's which aren't a feature of American English. I did have a little trouble understanding the grammar of certain parts. But overall it was fine and I am glad they translated it bc I wouldn't have been able to read it at all otherwise.

The drama is like not even an adaptation IMO. The plot and characters are so different, it's like a drama that was inspired by the book LOL. The book was a lot simpler, not a ton of intrigue, Jieli and Chengheng don't exist, Shangque is a completely dif character and an enemy lol. There are no love triangles at all, Orchid is really just an orchid, DFCQ is just a demon king who wants to be the best fighter and like that's it.

I actually much prefer the show tbh. I almost never feel this way about adaptations, but the book is just not as good, the show writers really did a great job of making the story a lot more interesting and touching. The show really emphasizes all different kinds of love, romantic, familial, platonic love. The book just didn't compare. Anyway that's my opinion.

I really hope the show writers make 2 more shows bc this author does have two more books set in the same universe apparently!

Some thoughts about Qingcang and Xunfeng`s father and mather

I keep thinking about how much Xunfeng resembles their father/Old Moon Supreme. He is similar to him in character, and even a little outwardly. If Xunfeng was capable of mastering hellfire, then I think their father wouldn't have to eradicate Xunfeng`s feelings (torture him), because he's not as soft as DFQC [I don't remember it being mentioned anywhere that Yannu was devoid of feelings]. Xunfeng would have be as cold a "stone" as his father, ready to lock up his "weaknesses" for the sake of Moon tribe without entering a cave. And we see how much he copies his father when he is ready to sacrifice the happiness and "life" of his beloved older brother for the sake of duty.

DFQC on the contrary, he does not look like his father either externally or internally. He is very soft, sensitive, pithy, and we know what kind of love he is capable of. The conclusion suggests itself that he inherited his appearance and character from their mother. Although we don't know anything about her, but looking at Dongfang Qingcang's beauty, kindness, and creative data, we can imagine what kind of person she was. And Old Moon Supreme must have loved her very much. DFQC was probably his most beloved son, not only because he was the firstborn, but he definitely reminded him of her the most.

And this also explains why the Dongfang`s brathers act and feel so differently. Xunfeng is a bit of a destroyer. DFQC - 100% creator.

DFQC is so incredibly emotionally intelligent. He hadn’t had experienced emotions for thousands of years and the last time he did he was a kid, yet he’s somehow better than a lot of other drama ML’s who are supposed to be fully emotionally developed.

Of course, he’s sometimes unreasonable and irrational. But he listens and he pays attention and he genuinely tries to figure it out. His gaining of emotions is not linear and he’s understandably frustrated and relapses sometimes. But majority of the time he puts effort into figuring out not only his own, but also others’ feelings. He tries to sort out what each emotion is exactly and why it’s there. He actually asks for help and listens to advice, from Xiao Lanhua, from Shangque, even from Jieli. And he reflects on their words and acts on them! Even before realizing that his Emotion Tree has been restored, he does it instinctually during his early time in Arbiter Hall with XLH. How rare that’s for a ML in Asian dramas?!
