Holy shit that's fascinating.

The procedure itself takes about an hour, if I'm understanding correctly. It uses electricity applied to the small intestine to basically kill the ineffective detection cells and stimulate the growth of healthier detection cells.

The thing I can't seem to figure out is whether you would then need to regularly take semaglutide instead of insulin (therefore still making you permanently dependent on pharma prices)

Semaglutide is currently best known under the brand name Ozempic and costs about the same as insulin. It also will not be patent free until 2031 at the earliest.

It's worth noting that there's currently no cure for Diabetes (although there are several ongoing research projects worldwide), and that a healthy lifestyle and weight loss are the first treatment recommendations for patients. All 14 participants in this study started at what's considered an "unhealthy" weight (BMI above 25 (fuck BMI as a measurement tho)) and lost weight in the process.

A new treatment combining ReCET and semaglutide could eliminate the need for insulin in type 2 diabetes, with 86% of participants in a study no longer requiring insulin therapy. The treatment was safe and well-tolerated, and further trials are planned to confirm these results.

Groundbreaking research presented at UEG Week 2024 introduces a promising new treatment approach for type 2 diabetes (T2D) that has the potential to greatly reduce or even eliminate the need for insulin therapy.

This innovative approach, which combines a novel procedure known as ReCET (Re-Cellularization via Electroporation Therapy) with semaglutide, resulted in the elimination of insulin therapy for 86% of patients.

Globally, T2D affects 422 million people... While insulin therapy is commonly used to manage blood sugar levels in T2D patients, it can result in side effects... and further complicate diabetes management. [Note: Also very importantly it's fucking bankrupting people who need it!!] A need therefore exists for alternative treatment strategies.

Study Design and Outcomes

The first-in-human study included 14 participants aged 28 to 75 years, with body mass indices ranging from 24 to 40 kg/m². Each participant underwent the ReCET procedure under deep sedation, a treatment intended to improve the body’s sensitivity to its own insulin. Following the procedure, participants adhered to a two-week isocaloric liquid diet, after which semaglutide was gradually titrated up to 1mg/week.

Remarkably, at the 6- and 12-month follow-up, 86% of participants (12 out of 14) no longer required insulin therapy, and this success continued through the 24-month follow-up. In these cases, all patients maintained glycaemic control, with HbA1c levels remaining below 7.5%.

Tolerability and Safety

The maximum dose of semaglutide was well-tolerated by 93% of participants, one individual could not increase to the maximum dose due to nausea. All patients successfully completed the ReCET procedure, and no serious adverse effects were reported.

Dr Celine Busch, lead author of the study, commented, “These findings are very encouraging, suggesting that ReCET is a safe and feasible procedure that, when combined with semaglutide, can effectively eliminate the need for insulin therapy.”

“Unlike drug therapy, which requires daily medication adherence, ReCET is compliance-free [meaning: you don't have to take it every day], addressing the critical issue of ongoing patient adherence in the management of T2D. In addition, the treatment is disease-modifying: it improves the patient’s sensitivity to their own (endogenous) insulin, tackling the root cause of the disease, as opposed to currently available drug therapies, that are at best disease-controlling.”

Looking ahead, the researchers plan to conduct larger randomized controlled trials to further validate these findings. Dr. Busch added, “We are currently conducting the EMINENT-2 trial with the same inclusion and exclusion criteria and administration of semaglutide, but with either a sham procedure or ReCET. This study will also include mechanistic assessments to evaluate the underlying mechanism of ReCET.”

Hello, everyone, and welcome to the Zine of Elements! This fanzine project is centered around celebrating the LEGO Ninjago TV series’ various lesser-appreciated elemental masters through fanfiction and fanart.

Applications for the project are currently CLOSED, and the zine is in creation phase. Follow this blog and read on for more information!

What is the Zine of Elements?

The Zine of Elements (ZoE) is a free, digital SFW fanzine hosted by @21st-century-ninja (Fabro) and @curiositythecryptid (Lis). Over the course of three months, 18 artists and 5 writers will work together to bring the background elemental masters to life!

The ZoE is a canon-focused zine, which means that contributors will be asked to create works that fall beneath the canon umbrella (see the Zine Doc for more details). While the ninja are allowed to be background characters in any works created, they cannot be the subject matter, as this is a zine dedicated to the lesser-seen elemental masters.

Who can apply?

Anyone, regardless of age or skill, is welcome to apply for the ZoE. You must be able to use Discord to communicate, and you must be able to speak either English, Spanish, or Portuguese.

What does the schedule look like?

OKAY let me see which one my faves are UHH

I feel like I'm being especially annoying about this one because I keep using it as a sample illu for my contributor introductions for the zines I'm in and also always use it for Portfolio day posts but...I'm just so proud of it. I'm usually never this happy with an illustration a year after I've drawn it but it just makes me happy to look at. Dang. I did that. I'm so good at art.

2. I've never really been an artist who made particularly clean art but this one made me realize that I just. dig the messiness and at the same time it's not even that noticeable? It would be more obvious without the colors but it looks like a finished illustration. The colors distract from the sloppiness and the fact I drew this in one evening. Also it just sparks joy, I love the characters and the colors and composition and ahh. <3

3. This is such a simple drawing but I had so much fun drawing it and I felt so good about my art throughout it. I also really like the end result. What can I say, Hatsune Miku is an icon.

Q. When will applications open?

Applications will open on May 1st and run until May 31st! Applicants should expect a response during the week of June 7th.

Q. What do I need to apply?

The writer's application will ask for three samples of written work of any size and format, while the artist's application will ask for five samples of visual art! None of the samples have to be Holmes or even fandom-related, and we encourage everyone to apply even if they have a limited body of work or have never joined a zine before.

Q. When will this zine be available to buy?

The anthology will run a Kickstarter campaign hopefully throughout the month of November, at which time it will be possible to pre-order a copy of the anthology in physical or digital formats! Printing and shipping will require at least two months, meaning that the earliest zines will arrive is in January 2026.

Q. How much will this zine cost?

The PDF should cost around $10 USD, and a physical copy around $30 USD. There will be additional Kickstarter tiers featuring merchandise, the prices of which are to be decided. Shipping within Canada and the US will be approximately $14 - 20 USD, while shipping outside Canada and the US will average upwards of $20 USD.

Q. What is the theme about?

The theme is homes and the idea of home, particularly as it relates to the history of queer domesticity! The iconic setting of 221B Baker Street is instantly recognizable as the house of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, but what really makes it their home? There is also the fact that each character has, at different points in the canon, left and returned to 221B—what can we make of that? There are its predecessors: Montague Street and Watson's hotel on the Strand. There are its successors: Watson's Kensington practice and Holmes' cottage in Sussex. Each of these living spaces represent something different to Holmes, Watson, and their relationship, which we hope to explore.

Q. Where is the title from?

The title comes from the note Holmes leaves Watson at the edge of Reichenbach Falls, before he leaves both his dearest friend and the world of the living for three years. Although not a terribly uncommon way of signing off a letter in those times, it denotes a sense of love and belonging to modern ears that we thought appropriate for our theme.

Q. Will this zine feature fan work of Holmes adaptations?

This project will focus on Holmes and Watson from the ACD canon, meaning that artwork and writing should be centered around the events of canon and in the Victorian/Edwardian time-period. However, there is space for flexibility, and contributors are welcome to take inspiration from adaptations similarly set in the Victorian/Edwardian era!

Q. Will contributors be paid for their work?

Half of the project's proceeds will go towards compensating our creators for their work, divided evenly between all contributors! Additionally, contributors will receive a free copy of the physical book with the shipping paid for.

Q. How can I support the zine even if I'm not a contributor?

We will have a public Discord server where you can keep abreast of project updates and see previews of the contributor's works in progress! The link to the server will be made available after the applications period in May.

Ms Raven! I have a question about the research you're doing on the type of people and the relationship of their interest with the twst OB. Is there a quota of answerees that you try to meet or do you have a deadline for when you plan to close the survey? I'm just curious if there's a specific time frame we can count on in receiving the results of your study.

As of my reply to this ask, we’ve already collected over 800 responses!! 🥳 It’s been less than a week since the survey form went public, so it’s been really exciting seeing this level of engagement and interest.

The survey form will still be accepting responses until July 15th. Ideally, we’d like to hit at least 1000 responses (which I think we’re well on our way towards). Even if we do meet our goal, we’ll happily accept as many responses as we can get before the deadline. BIG NUMBER GO BRRRRRRRRRR and also a larger sample size makes our data stronger 💪

Between now and July 15, we’re throwing together a template and model that will crunch the numbers for us when the data is prepared. This is because the final report will NOT be just pie charts and bar graphs showing the OB boy rankings; we will actually be using various statistical tests to compare the variables while accounting for potential confounding factors.

Once the form closes, we’ll move into the next phase, which will involve doing a sweep to “clean up” the data (ie throw out invalid responses, translate open-ended questions that have been written in languages other than English, standardize short responses so they all read the same (ie America/U.S./USA/United States of America -> USA), etc.). The cleaned data is what will be plugged in for analysis.

When the analysis is done, we’ll be in the writing phase. The average Joe will not be able to understand what these numbers, percentages, graphs, and tests mean. The hope is to produce a final report that is divusee up into sections like a research paper but is also fun + easy to read and understand. We plan to include an introduction, our methodology (why did we choose this test and these questions, how did we clean the data, etc.), results, discussion, conclusions, contributor credits, and even what we could theoretically do better next time.

Altogether, this process could take at least a few weeks (and that’s not counting time for editing and rewrites). If all goes well and there aren’t any unexpected bumps in the road, we can anticipate the full report being out in late August, maybe September. No promises though!! There’s various people involved, a lot of moving parts to account for, and, of course, a lot of data to play around with. At the end of the day, we want to make sure we know what we’re talking about before we pass that information along to the rest of the fandom!

When I became Editor in Chief of Seretei Communication, I was a little shocked to see that amongst all the many contributors of our dear magazine, Kurotsuchi taichou's column “Medicine for the Brain” was so popular!

Today we ask the man himself to answer some hot questions that I'm sure you all are very excited to know!

S: Thank you very much for taking the time out of your very busy schedule to do this interview with us, Kurotsuchi taichou.

M: I was advised there would be sweet mochi.

S: Um... yes, sorry, they’ll be bringing some tea and biscuits soon...

So, you are one of the most mysterious captains of the Gotei 13 and your fans desperately want to know a little more about you, what would you say is your favourite time of day?

M: my fans want to know that? What a stupid question. Next.

S: uh... Kurotsuchi taichou, please, you promised you'd answer...

M: alright then, my favourite time of the day is whenever this interview stops boring me. Soon, let's hope... for your sake, Hisagi san.

S: *gulps* erm... yeah, well, we can skip to the next one, no harm in that... ah, yes! What would you say it’s your biggest weakness?

M: weakness? Who says I have any? Are you plotting against me? Is this some kind of trap?

S: w-what? No! Of course not! Uh... let- let’s see, what about... what is something you regret?

M: leaving my lab this morning...

S: oh... I don’t- uh... ok, ok, let’s try again. What is your biggest strength?

M: Ah, yes, of those I have many. I guess if I had to choose one it would be... my humility.

S: hah-hah... uh... great answer! Some of our readers are interested in what makes Kurotsuchi taichou excited. What makes you drop everything at once and come running, Kurotsuchi sama?

M: that’s easy - a good dissection, of course! There’s nothing quite like the thrill of a shredding, nothing quite as refreshing as sinking my hands into a new specimen and make it spills its guts and secrets, hahaha!

S: sounds... lovely... *cough* You’re a very driven individual, what is the source of your inspiration?

M: another easy one - the pursue of knowledge, that is clear. Science is everything.

S: Fantastic response, sir. Now for a more personal touch... what do you favour, sweet or savory?

M: um... I’d have to choose sweet. By the way where’s my mochi?

S: oh, just arriving, I'm sure. We all know you have one of the most dashing smiles of the entire Seretei...

M: oh, stop it, Hisagi san, you’re going to make me blush under my paint...

S: haha... I'm merely transmitting our reader’s sentiment. So, taichou, what makes you smile the most?

M: nothing brings me more joy than a nice, juicy discovery. Finding a new and intriguing subject to experiment on, to cut up and sample and learn some groundbreaking data.

S: I see... I'm sure your fans will love that answer. What would you say it’s something you could never live without? Science?

M: well, don’t you go answering for me, Hisagi san, you’re taking the fun out of it. Yes, science. But I will let you in on a secret, I couldn’t live without my paint either. Not even in prison did I go without it for a single day.

S: oh, wow! How did you manage that?

M: let’s say I can be very persuasive.

S: I believe that! I don't think I want to make any follow up questions... Would you share one of you pet peeves?

M: those phoney scientists who seek perfection. I abhor perfection.

S: Interesting. Now, we all know you like to change your appearance very frequently and impress us with your fabulous designs... if you have to choose, would you go for diamonds or pearls?

M: Neither, I'm more of a 24 carat gold kinda girl, you see?

S: and it looks so good on you, sir!

M: here we go with more praise, Hisagi...

S: I mean it!

M: I’m going to start getting my hopes high... perhaps you should pop by my lab later on? I have a feeling that you’d be perfect for one of my new experiments...

S: oh, I-I’m very sorry, Captain but I- um... already have plans.

M: Shame... well, my door is always open, and there’s always a free operating table in my personal lab, so just keep it in mind!

S: will-will do. So... uh... yeah, for out last question – please tell us, Kurotsuchi taichou, what's your guilty pleasure?

M: oh... well, I love listening to my test subjects scream, especially the women. There is something about how shrill their voices get when they’re in pain... It does things to me.

S: uh... things?

M: things...

S: uh... ok. So, um, this is the end of the interview... any last pearls of wisdom you would wish to share with your fans?

M: *clears throat* my dear fans, I’d like to inform you that there are some open spots in my division begging to be filled. Whether you are strong or weak, a master of kidou or zanjutsu, smart or dumber than Zaraki... I welcome you all.

S: wow, Captain, that’s so kind of you. I thought there would be very strict requirements to joint the 12th?

M: No! We are open to any and all candidates, whether you’re healthy or ill, whole or maimed. I used up most of my explosives and shields fighting against those damned Quincies, I can’t get very picky, you see?

S: sir, are you... are you turning division members into weapons?

M: my, my... look at the time! I'm afraid I must go, Hisagi san, I'm a very busy man, as you know. This was lovely, let’s never do it again!

Oh! And send those mochi to my office, I'll be waiting!

🍊PRODUCTION UPDATE🍊

Hello all! Here is a long-awaited update (and apology from our head mod!)

We have ALL regular merch on-hand! Everything looks so good and high quality, we're super pleased with our manus' hard work! Pre-packing has been in progress during our shipping mod's downtime during her work day, and formatting is nearing completion.

In regards to our delays and lack of updates, Mod Atlass would like to offer this formal apology:

"Very sorry to all the fellow Iida fans for my silence and delays! I have been busy with packing 450+ @rriotzine preorders, contributor boxes, pre-packing Iida zine & others, caring for a sick cat, and just having life in general. I'm working my hardest to finish everything to the best quality possible. I will continue to work hard until I can finall have everything on-hand and ready to ship to all of you! I'm determined to make the Iida bros proud and get your goods to you in top condition!"

Plushie sampling has been slow-moving, as very simple changes have taken weeks between to get updated proofs from our manufacturer. We have had to adjust his engine exhausts from metal rivets to embroidery, as the manu informed us very recently that they would not be possible to keep for mass production, as the rivets were falling out when the plushies were being stuffed. The final adjustment is simply moving the screen print on the shorts further up so that the print doesn't get...trapped in his butt crack :'D We hope to finally get started on mass production once this simple change has been shown to us and approved.
