PART 2 (SMUT)

You had no idea how you got into this position.

Something to do with your insecurities, probably; because, some core instinct within your body told you that there is no higher shame than telling your teammates you’re single - and a virgin.

Or maybe it was just your stupid mouth, blurting out a “yes” before you’d properly heard the question your excited Sergeant had asked.

‘Aw, go on, y/n, what’s he like?’

You baulked. ‘Um - he’s…’ and it spiralled down from there.

Up to date, your husband was tall, blonde and muscular, spoke with a Manchester accent -

Wait.

You’d hardly noticed, but your mystery man was starting to sound a hell of a lot like your Lieutenant, Ghost. Something he didn’t fail to notice.

It was getting out of hand when he decided to call at your quarters, stumbling upon you seated at your couch, wearing fuck all (at least, a singlet and shorts looked like heaven to Ghost after all of that tactical gear) all for you to sit up fast, surprised at his appearance.

‘Sir - !’

‘Left hand. Now.’

You presented your hand to him with a confused flush, and he snatched at it, examining your fingers until he gave you a triumphant look.

‘Where’s your wedding ring, lovie?’

‘M-my…’ you spluttered. You knew you’d been caught.

‘The ring your… ah… husband brought you.’

Swallowing down the thick lump in your throat was becoming more and more of a challenge. ‘I…’

‘I’m starting to doubt the existence of your husband… what did you say his name was again?’

‘S-sir, I…’

‘You thought I wouldn’t notice?’ he growled suddenly, strong hands fisting in your collar. ‘I don’t have a twin brother, y/n.’ hot breath flooded over your collarbone and neck, causing heat to pool embarrassingly low in your stomach. Blood rushed to your cheeks.

‘But we can certainly do something about your relationship status, sweetheart.’

I came back after I'd gone off on one, seeing the post had struck a chord and being thankful but fearful of my inbox. Let me say with delighted surprise that all the asks are very kind.

Thank you for this one, sweet anon. I am so excited and so nervous about my best beloved, Long Live Evil, and about coming back with a new book of my own after so long, when I believed for a long time it was hopeless.

I'm really grateful to find readers waiting for me. But I know readers are naturally more invested in characters they know: I extremely appreciate you taking an interest in the future.

So, short answer: YEAH you are!

Long answer: Long Live Evil wouldn't exist without its queer narratives.

C.S. Pacat and I were talking in our virtual Brookline Booksmith event recently about our favourite Disney villains. C.S. Pacat picked Maleficent, a fine choice. I picked Snow White's Evil Queen. We agreed we loved most of them.

Here's the relevant excerpt I was quoting in my last post from Carmen Maria Machado's In The Dream House, saying 'I think a lot about queer villains, the problem and pleasure and audacity of them.' Well... me too.

I think many of us have experienced feeling made wrong in some way - for not wanting what society said we should or being what we were expected to be - and that one step along that journey of discovery is going 'Okay, if it's wicked, I'll just BE wicked.' And that's part of why those characters appeal - because they seem free, and free of pain.

But modern storytelling isn't confined to coding, and audiences can now feel free to expect, not the certainty, but the possibility characters who aren't introduced as such still might actually turn out to be LGBT+. The essays I've read about Supernatural, Teen Wolf, Sherlock, Ted Lasso, Fox 9-1-1... I think the latest argued Jaime Lannister was bisexual. (Pretty persuasive.)

I remember reading the Raven Cycle going 'oh? OH.' I remember being at a writing retreat in 2013 and running through the halls screaming about Nico diAngelo. Ten years later we got a Nico diAngelo book co-written by Rick Riordan and the amazing Mark Oshiro. I watched Red, White and Royal Blue with a friend and she said 'honestly I hope the guys get together, but...' and I (having read the book) silenced myself with a herculean effort and watched her hopes come true. I didn't know about The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and almost dropped the book in a swimming pool. But I've also read and watched many things thinking, just maybe... oh, no. Still that hope existing is meaningful, the thought that if the story had gone differently, if this revelation had happened, if this realisation had happened, if, if, if...

Long Live Evil is a story about the story going differently and asking yourself questions about your own nature, and the escape to fiction of those who really need escape. The book is based on that 'if,' and the 'if' itself is joyous, and brings me back to the idea of gleefully transgressing the narrative that much villain love is based on.

It's also an ensemble story with a rogue's gallery of characters and multiple PoVs. (I was much inspired by the Six of Crows ensemble.) So it isn't about any one character's romance, and by the book's nature there exist many possibilities. A critique partner read and said 'I didn't know you were going THERE' and I responded 'Should I?'

I've never been one to confirm where stories are going, and I won't do so now. I'm not talking about any one character or telling you a direction.

I'm just saying yes to rep. It's baked in.

fundamentally disinterested in the recurring discourse about kevin's drinking that aims to a) make it his Specific Problem To Focus On And Overcome when it is a crutch and coping mechanism to get him through a Much Bigger Problem (emotional fallout he can't square with by himself, culture shock, trauma, loss of his extremely wildly co-dependent relationship w riko, losing the structure of the nest, mourning a future he was meant to have, processing a grave injustice, anger and fear and desperate grief, all of which is his Actual Specific Fox Problem) while he builds himself back up, and b) thinks that even if it is a problem (more on that later), it's the foxes' problem to deal with.

like. it's just not.

yeah, he doesn't drink until he meets them. they gave him that habit, and in traditional terms, they're (the monsters specifically) a 'bad influence'. but these are the foxes. this is kevin day, son of exy, whose meteor is crashing spectacularly through no fault of his own. there are no traditional terms to be found here. the framework for it literally doesn't exist. neil comes into the foxes with more conventional expectations—appalled at the athletes' substance use, his horror at matt's trip to columbia, his steadfast and early repeated stance that none of the foxes should let andrew treat them the way he does, and certainly not nicky—and tends to engage with them less as the series goes on and he folds himself into the foxes. the thing about the foxes is that they've all been in pits deeper than they are tall. and some of them got a helping hand on the way—erik, andrew's extreme intervention methods, stephanie walker—and wymack was always waiting for them on the other side, ready to throw down a rope, but all the foxes dragged themselves out of their own holes. often not alone, often not without assistance, but at the end of the day, they have to do it.

there's that line neil has about aaron in that scene that got deleted when the timeline shifted around, when he thinks about how aaron got this far in life on his own, surviving on willpower and sheer desperation. that applies to aaron in a way that's a little more acute than some of the rest of them—boy who doesn't let the foxes in bc of andrew, boy who doesn't let nicky in bc he doesn't know how, boy made of flinching and seeking an escape and grieving the one who hurt him—but is broadly true for the foxes en masse.

this isn't to say the foxes can't help each other, but it's not their job. it just isn't. they'll keep kevin alive, keep him safe, keep him flanked and contained within their ranks. they'll fight tooth and nail in this battle with him, fight to get him to that championship game, fight to get that trophy in his hands. but that's all they've agreed to. that's all they're responsible for, in this covenant they've made with him. he says they can make this happen, and they're going to get him to that final game, but it's up to him what state he's in when he gets there.

like. they're foxes. they've been triaging their whole lives. they hate each other and they hate everyone else more. they're the kids with their backs up against the wall. half of them are addicts. i don't think kevin is comparable, personally; he's getting through a horrific situation with a coping mechanism. that's not the same thing as battling yourself to stop using. but that's not really the point of this. what i'm getting at here is that to the foxes, it's easy math: kevin who can lean on vodka and andrew and wymack and the foxes to stay upright when he's not ready to stand on his own two feet is still a kevin who is standing. a kevin with one less piece of scaffolding to lean on is a kevin who falls over, a kevin at risk of complete collapse, a kevin one phone call away from running back to the master, a kevin one crucial loss away from not ever making it back to himself at all. they're triaging. this is low on the totem pole of things they have the room to care about. they very much have bigger problems, both individually and even just kevin-related. if alcohol makes seeing the boy he knew best in the world and moved in tandem with his whole life and who destroyed their entire legacy and his entire life in one move — if alcohol makes facing that boy easier to stomach, then, fuck, why would they take that away? they're foxes. they've all got their demons. this is what kevin needs this year and a half to let him face his, that's all. they can understand that. it doesn't have to be pretty, as long as it keeps him in the fight. that's the priority.

i think there's absolutely space to explore this in fic and art and fandom in a way that maybe does explore it as a Problem, both that it's an active problem for kevin & that it's something to explore other foxes helping him with (there's a t&n fic that i've been gnawing at the bit to read for months that seems poised to explore this premise, and that's super up my alley)! i just think we're in different territory when we're talking about the series—and its characters and dynamics—in a conversational rather than transformational way, and end up talking about this like the foxes are responsible for kevin's choices. i love kevin day. i read these back at the start of 2015 & he's so dear to me that loving him was the blueprint for how i feel abt kageyama. but it's been pretty weird to see how the conversation has been translating Loving Kevin Day into... thinking the foxes are doing wrong by him with respect to this in actual canon. like that's just not how it operates there

It wasn’t new to see soldiers out behind the barracks, sucking on hand-rolled cigarettes the rookies had snuck onto base. They all needed the nicotine and the higher-ups usually turned a blind eye, knowing this.

So nobody even batted an eye when their lieutenant started joining the party, often found with his mask rolled up over that crooked, pale nose and a blunt jammed between his lips.

No-one spoke about it. Smoking wasn’t something you bragged about. Vices were like taboo in the SAS, no matter how much you drunk, how many girls you’d snuck into your quarters, or the amount of smoke in your breath, it didn’t come up in sober conversation.

You were glad of that when you found your Lieutenant’s stash of cigarettes, squirrelled away under the sink in the commons room. It was almost 11 when you left the room to light up, the chemicals soaking into your muscles and loosening every fibre as if by magic.

You sighed aloud, thick, white smoke pluming from your parted lips.

‘Thanks, LT,’ you snorted to yourself, leaning back against the grimy outside wall of the mess hall and scuffing your boots into the gravel.

‘I don’t remember doing anything for you, Sergeant.’

‘Fuck! Who’s the-‘ your head whipped around to face a hollow-cheeked skull, which in turn belonged to a tall, broad-shouldered and crooked-nosed… Lieutenant.

‘Sir,’ you muttered, discreetly crushing out the butt you’d dropped in surprise. ‘I…’

‘Save it. Why’d you take them?’

‘I needed to relax,’ you pleaded. ‘God, I only took one. I’ll pay you back or whatever…’

‘Mhm.’

It had been a few weeks since you’d been caught smoking behind the mess hall, and you still couldn’t look your lieutenant in the eye. It wasn’t like he made it any easier, though, what with that unnerving dark brown stare that never left your face.

You found yourself back at your old haunt that night, unable to sleep. The small overhang of the mess hall roof shielded you from about seventy per cent of the rain, the rest soaking into your hair and boots.

Footsteps. Heavy ones; you could hear the wet crunch of gravel as the figure approached. All you could see was the orangish light of a tiny ember… the end of a cigarette.

You stood up and held out a hand expectantly before you even registered who it was.

‘It’s a disgusting habit, Sergeant.’

‘Bit rich coming from the likes of you.’ you mumbled out the retort before you could think, and immediately regretted it, eyes widening and fists clenching. But to your surprise, he laughed.

‘Touché.’

A gloved hand extended toward you, a small, thin cylinder with smoke curling from one end slotted in between two fingers. You accepted the cigarette gladly.

‘Cheers.’
