Natsume Angst Thoughts…. 🌱🧊

(CW: self blame, general discussion of distress from triggers/trauma, repeated phrases and yelling under the cut)

Since I gave my boy PTSD, he most definitely has nightmares/flashbacks, among everything else that comes with that kind of trauma response.

🍃 I imagined the nightmares would be like… almost hyperbolic versions of the events that happened, with amplified emotions and imagery as his nervous system goes haywire. One of his triggers are strong winds, but especially winds during the cold season—feeling it hit his face, hearing the sharp whistle of it against his ears, all of that. Not that it automatically gives him flashbacks, but it stresses him out incredibly quickly.

He couldn’t handle having a window down inside a fast moving car or ride a rollercoaster. Most people would assume it’s purely a sensory thing, but the wild fearful look he gets in his eyes would suggest otherwise.

🍃 The winds have the immediate reminder of Fuyu and his attack, but it also comes with all that guilt of why Natsume was attacked in the first place. It’s the guilt of knowing that maybe he deserved it, that he shouldn’t feel the terror and adrenaline in his bones because he knows exactly why he’s now scarred. If anything, it’s merely a bleak reminder of his crimes, letting him never forget his failures and cowardice which will follow him forever.

🍃 I was going through picrews and I found this one that I ended up using to visualize an example of a nightmare Natsume would have, probably one of many repeated ones…

…Natsume wakes up in a blizzard at the dead of night. The ghost cries and screams of soldiers and parents and children barrage his ears. Around him are the sounds of battle and yet no soul can be seen. He is alone. The last one standing in a frosted wasteland. Every step forward feels like a lunge through tar, legs trembling and tired.

What should’ve been pristine white snow was dirtied with splatters across the landscape, too hazy to discern the substance. It seemed to glow against the inky black of the horizon. The wind howled relentlessly, crying out, as small shards of sleet and ice pelt the man’s face. It burns. It burns. It burns. It burns.

Natsume’s hands reached to protect his face, only to wince at the sting of raw flesh meeting flesh. He feels his vision begin to flicker and rapidly dim, failing him. “I can’t see,” he thinks as his eyes dart around helplessly. “I can’t see. I can’t see. Why can’t I see?!” Where was he? Looking down toward his hands again, he sees more injuries. And blood. So much blood. The wind howls again.

“YOU’RE A DISGRACE!”
