Project NoBa24

Backlog complete! I ended up not completing a lot of games, and I've come to accept that I'm not going to finish them all. At the very least, it was a rewarding, stretching experience, to try something new and decide for myself if I like it. I read The Count of Monte Cristo and it turned out to be a classic I liked; I read The Scarlet Letter and hated it.

But what do I do with this information? Well, tier lists, of course! In brief I'm going to relay my thoughts on the games; the tiers are based on a combination of enjoyment and quality, so if I didn't finish a game and you think it's ranked too low, I'm wrong. Sue me.

#18: Psychonauts 2 (D-tier)

I found this one very annoying to play and listen to. Unsurprisingly, it dropped into the bottom of the list.

#17: DREDGE (D-tier)

It's a fishing game and I lost patience. I also learned my lesson about horror from Mouthwashing.

#16: In Stars and Time (C-tier)

Got frustrated with the core mechanic, couldn't engage with it. I was charmed by it, however, and I would recommend it.

#15: Ghost of a Tale (C-tier)

Not my kind of stealth game, but I did love the world and the characters I met, even if there were kinda one-note.

14: YEAH! YOU WANT "THOSE GAMES," RIGHT? SO HERE YOU GO! NOW, LET'S SEE YOU CLEAR THEM! (C-tier)

Committed to the bit of replicating shitty games and became shitty to play in turn. I was impressed with their dedication and repulsed by the result.

13: Hi-Fi RUSH (C-tier)

An awkward, charming game that tried its hardest to get me on-board with the gameplay, but I, alas, suck at rhythm-action games and couldn't keep going.

#12: Pizza Tower (B-tier)

A frenetic action game with an absolutely insane vibe, I respect the craft with which it was made but was absolutely infuriated actually playing it. But I understand why it became so popular almost overnight.

#11: Void Stranger (B-tier)

Incredibly frustrating and abstruse, which I recognize was the point and I understand why every part of the game was designed as it was. But I didn't like playing it at all; that it is so high is a testament to its design.

#10: Outer Wilds (B-tier)

Relaxed, unrushed, committed to giving you the tools to see yourself to the end of the game and nonchalant enough to ignore your pleas for something easier. The game I had the hardest time recognizing I didn't enjoy playing it.

#9: En Garde! (A-tier)

Like a dashing stranger, come to kiss you and then vanish into the night, this is a game that understood the assignment and didn't overstay its welcome. I debated B- or A-tier on this one, but I think bottom of A-tier fits for my enjoyment; it might have been S if it didn't get so monstrously hard at the end, which I'm still a little sore about.

#8: Mouthwashing (A-tier)

Hauntingly-committed to the terrible story it set out to tell, it scared me half to death to beat it, but I really came to appreciate it in the months recovering from it. Even if I didn't particularly like the rush it gave me.

#7: Slay the Princess (A-tier)

A gorgeous game that worms into your brain and won't let go. As beautiful as this game is, and as good as the acting is, and as fun as the writing is, I would consider it more a cognitohazard, where thinking about it is dangerous and upsetting. It's also wholly unique, never quite seen anything like it, and that's worth something.

#6: Viewfinder (A-tier)

A game I thoroughly enjoyed, weighed down by a story that was trite and unnecessary. I might revisit it when I'm in a mind-bendy mood.

#5: Spark the Electric Jester 3 (S-tier)

The best 3D Sonic game, bar none. I loved it so much that I bought it at full-price for my older brother to try, which he ended up loving as well. The hype is real, this game is good.

#4: Children of the Sun (S-tier)

Cloaked in anger and a punk-rock aesthetic, playing this game feels visceral and fun. I'm not the kind to perfect my scores, but just beating the game was oh-so-satisfying. Edge with a point.

#3: Aero GPX (S-tier)

Technically cheating, since it's in early-access, but if the final game turns out as good as this demo has been, then it's going to be great.

#2: Balatro (S-tier)

Speaking of games that worm into your brain: I watched so many episodes of Columbo to give me something to do while I played this game. It's so much fun, but I want to add a wrinkle to my previous review.

You can definitely burn out from playing this game. Beating the early levels is a fun little challenge, but the RNG of the endgame can be such a killjoy that I haven't picked up the game in a month. Yes I have 134 hours in the game and I only expect that to climb in the future, but I think this game should be played with some moderation, lest you stop enjoying it like me.

But for as fun as that game was, there was one game that ultimately came out on top...

#1: Citizen Sleeper (S-tier)

The game that wouldn't let me go. Compelling, emotional, deeply, deeply human from beginning to end, painting a bleak yet hopeful view of the future, it's a wonderful portrait of what it means to be and become human.

So that's it. Games beaten, backlog cleared. What games will I play in the future?

Well, about that.

I ended up buying three more games from my wishlist in December. It was Christmas, what else could I do? If big games are allowed to have a little DLC, why can't I?

So get ready for three more titles before I call this quits. It's time for Project DeBa24.

Both of their characters feel so true to themselves, and it's such an excellent take on their slowly developing season 3 dynamic. Not to mention that the pay-off is excellent, and Merlin deserves compensation for putting up with them. Top tier Arwaine dynamic.

Hurt/Comfort, huddling for warmth, emotionally stunted but sweetheart Arthur, and a happy poly ending for all of them? Yeah. This entire fic feels like a warm blanket itself and single-handedly turned me into a whump!Gwaine fan I think, 10/10 no notes <3

I'm such a sucker for this trope and it just works SO well for the three of them. The trio is mostly implied at the end but I actually liked it best that way, it's such a great snapshot of the dynamic between Arthur and Gwaine, what's missing and what isn't, with the 'fix' mostly left in the air because really, they probably don't know exactly, either.

Arthur's not a prude, but he does think the number of times he's walked in on his flatmates having at it probably qualifies them for some sort of general obscenity charge.

While this is mostly PWP, it just feels SO true to the dynamic of Merlin and Gwaine being little shits and entirely making it Arthur's problem. There's bets about who will get whom of quicker. It's excellent.

He wanted her by his side.

“Wouldn’t it be like making things official?” Yn asks genuinely curious and Daniel can tell by the way she bites her lips and one of her eyebrows goes up the slightest.

“Yeah, am I going too fast?”

“I mean, you’re a racing driver, I would say it’s your job to go fast, isn’t it?” She jokes and he laughs throwing his head on the headrest.

My thoughts on this ship under the cut!

Thought I might as well put my thoughts on this, I didn't before out of fear of changing the votes but eh, I probably won't. Anywayyyy I've seen this ship floatin' around my dash and...it's fineeeee. It's not my personal favorite, but I can see why some people might like it, due to that angel x devil dynamic they've got goin' on, but I just can't see it. I just saw a meme about Evil Morty getting mad about Morty Prime and Rick c137 luring them into their found family, and because of that, I just see Evil Morty as the tired older brother and Morty Prime as the annoying younger brother (I don't see Morty Prime as annoying, buttt Evil Morty probably does) butttttt just because I personally dislike it, it's just due to how I see their dynamic. But in canon Evil Morty diddddd canonically leave Morty Prime for dead with no gulit, sooooo. He also did canonically try to kill Morty Prime's grandpa, again, SO. They are also the same person. SO. While I DO like their dynamic, I personally can't see it as romantic, but I can see why some people might like it, it's just not my thing personally. As long as you don't sexualize Morty Prime or Evil Morty, then I don't really mind it. Ship whatever you want, as long as it isn't illegal. It's not my personal thing but eh, I can kinda see the appeal.

well first off you can ALWAYS stalk me and never apologize for it, i love answering stuff and i love that people actually read it HAHA! so please <3 stalk away <3 i love it

i LOVE this question. i was going to make one of those images like the youtubers do for tier lists but then i realized i would have to explain myself anyway so im just going to give each song a letter grade and a little blurb about why i think this... so here goes 🤓

i actually have to put this under a cut because it got so long that i am not going to clog up people's dash with my long and way too detailed thoughts on GUTS but please read this if it is of interest bc i would love to continue discussing haha

so first i'm going to say to me overall guts is like a solid A-/A for a sophomore album. i don't think it's perfect but i think as far as showing growth from the first album, expanding on themes and sounds that were explored in sour, and just maturing while still feeling like a natural progression -- i think it does all of that really nicely while also managing to carve out a unique niche for olivia in the industry. so like. YES! great. (i have been saying that while i see olivia compared to taylor swift a lot, i think it's actually a much better comparison to compare her to avril lavigne in the early 2000s -- avril was originally "discovered" via performing with shania twain (which in some ways we could argue for being a taylor/olivia situation but in the 90s) and a lot of her early work and songwriting is influenced by the country music scene, but, just like olivia, her first album smashed onto the scene and captured the teenage zeitgeist in a really unique and special that was really of the moment it was released and dug into rock inspired hooks and sounds that resonated with the audience of young teens. if "driver's license" is olivia's "complicated," i think we can easily argue that "good 4 u" is her sk8r boi. (and deja vu is her i'm with you, the best single and best song in both of their discographies I SAID WHAT I SAID!) anyway all that is to say i think that GUTS and under my skin ALSO share a lot of parallels both in how they were marketed and the way they dive deeper into darker themes while expanding on a lot of what made the first album great, if perhaps not spawning the level of radio hits as the first album. anyway it's just something i think about that i don't see talked about all that much and i find it really interesting. i could keep going but i know that was an insane digression so let's get to the grades.)

all american bitch - B+ i think this song is a great opener and it has some really great lines in it -- the sarcasm makes it so fun and tongue in cheek and i actually like the scream, my reason for not being able to give it an A is just that i do feel like it's very much "putting on a persona" of being a rock punk chick, which is absolutely cool and is extremely well done, it just doesn't feel 100% authentic to me. like, i like the scream but it feels more like an acting performance than a genuine scream of anguish, but olivia is such an appealing actress that i'm like, yeah girl go off

bad idea right? - A+ this is the deja vu of the album for me. it is SUCH A GOOD SONG and it has the best video by far of any of the singles, it's so clever and creative and i actually really love her vocal delivery, it's bratty and obnoxious but for some reason it DOES feel authentic to me in a way AAB doesn't, i think it takes its influences and manages to reinterpret and transform them into something totally unique and personal to olivia and it's just GREAT. (i think a great example of how good this song is is honestly the kelly clarkson cover she did, it was a really fun cover but you could just tell that olivia's version works better, it's a song that feels like it could only be done by her and i love it for that.)

vampire - B i actually thought i'd rate this lower bc it is my least favorite song on the album but like, okay it's FINE. my issue with vampire is that 1) it feels like the label said "write another ballad that sounds like drivers license and we'll use that as the lead single" which i don't like, and 2) i've written before that my main issue with vampire is that it DOES NOT COMMIT to the genuinely cool metaphor that it attempts. i actually love the line "you only come out at night" because i think it's really clever and creative to extend the "sucking me dry" metaphor of a vampire. i think following that up with "i used to think i was smart but you made me look so naive" is such a let down and so cliche that it annoys me every time i hear the song. like, if the song instead was like "i should have known it was strange, you only come out at night/you said i tasted so sweet til nothing was left in my veins" or something i would think it was a great song. but instead we get that clunky cliche of a line and it irritates me. the song has potential but it just doesn't deliver.

lacy - A- (tw: ed) so i think that this song is about struggling with an ed and i think it is really amazing if you read it through that lens. i don't even really want to say that much more about it because when i saw someone say that on twitter and i listened to the song thinking about that, it hit me really hard and i think it's brilliantly done but it's intense. i think olivia said that it came out of a poem she wrote and i think that lacy is the personification of that really personal struggle and i think it's a beautiful and deeply sad metaphor and the song actually does it really well. i also really love her vocal delivery on the recording and i think it's beautifully produced, the layered vocals at the end are really gorgeous.

ballad of a homeschooled girl - A- honestly i have the same comments as i do about all american bitch except i just think this song is slightly better and feels a little more authentic. i think the lyrics on this one are really clever as well and i love the little production quirks like "how to flirt" and the outro is SO FUN and i love the sort of fourth wall break of "can't think of a third line" and the la la la that just kind of smashes into the end of the song, i think it works so well with the concept of the song so yeah. great.

making the bed - B+ this is a song where i'm like, there's nothing WRONG with it i just don't think it's particularly special, like it's a good song and it has some really great lyrics i just think it's a decent song that accomplishes exactly what it sets out to do. it's good. no real notes. my favorite lyric is "they tell me that they love me like i'm some tourist attraction" -- i love when the pop girls talk about the complexities of fame, and olivia seems strikingly self aware in a lot of her lyrics and that one is really a hard hitter. (it reminds me of billie's getting older song, "the things i once enjoyed just keep me employed now" and "another thing i ruined i used to do for fun" which are both lines that i feel like really do a nice job of exploring how it feels when your art and artistic expression becomes a job and a persona. i think billie and olivia are doing so much cool stuff and they both just seem like such cool and interesting girls. they just give the vibe that it would be so fun to get dinner with them and talk about their experience of teenage fame because they both seem to have some really interesting and complex insights about it.)

logical - B- tbh this song is kinda boring to me. it's fine but i just think it's a theme that is explored better in other songs. the one line i really like is "if rain don't pour and sun don't shine" because i like to imagine that it's a reference to taming of the shrew act iv scene v.

get him back! - A+ SO GOOD COME ON GET HIM BACK IS SO GOOD AHHHHHH i get mad thinking about the music video bc the iphone lens makes it so weird and i think this could've had an even better video without the iphone gimmick but holy cow this song is so good. it's so clever, it's so fun, it ROCKS. (though this is the point on the album where i start to get annoyed by all the production quirks, i think they are fun on a couple songs but we don't need the "is this the song with drums" thing, just play the song. there's only so much studio chatter that makes a song fun before it gets a little grating to listen to every time i want to play the song.) but this is a brilliant song. I WANNA MEET HIS MOM AND TELL HER HER SON SUCKS. has anyone ever more perfectly captured how it feels to be nineteen. ugh this song is so good.

love is embarrassing - A i actually really like this song and i think it's a really nice spiritual closer to sour. it does such a nice job of reflecting but in a funny, tongue-in-cheek, self aware way that i think is so appealing and cute. i love "you found a new version of me and i damn near started world war three" as a callback to "another actress i hate to think that i was just your type" and i LOOOVE the outro with "i'm planning out my wedding with some guy i'm never marrying" which i think is a fantastic line. i love the vocal delivery on the outro as well. (also this is an example for me of a song with no studio chatter or production gimmicks, and it's GOOD bc it's like, it doesn't need that! it's just a fun song! and i like it for that!!)

the grudge - A- honestly a beautiful song that captures a very specific feeling. i love the melody and the way she delivers "how could anybody do the things you did so easily?" the second verse is an absolute gut punch of what it feels like to come away from a toxic love. it has a couple clunkers (i'm not a fan of "trust that you betrayed, confusion that still lingers" which i think is just a bit awkward) but overall it's a lovely song and so raw.

pretty isn't pretty - A again just a really solid work. i love the guitar sound on it. and i think it does a really nice job of capturing another specific teenage emotion. one thing i love on GUTS is that it feels legitimately balanced between songs about heartbreak and songs about personal feelings and this song is one that i think does that second part very well. i really love the second prechorus line "it's in my phone it's in my head it's in the boys i bring to bed" and i think this song is really insightful and personal.

teenage dream - B my issue with this song is my same issue with hope ur ok which is that it just feels so aware of itself as AN ALBUM CLOSER and i find it a bit cloying. i think the theme is interesting and has potential but the song just annoys me because it feels kind of overdone. idk. i just don't love it. i get it and i get why it's there but i think there was a better way of closing the album in a more genuine way.

I was supposed to be writing but instead I made a punctuation marks tierlist. Here's the link I used so we can all fight about this together.

Reasons for rankings under cut

S-Tier:

Semicolon: The semicolon is an extremely underrated puncuation mark; it is versatile and attracts the readers attention.

Em dash: The em dash can be used similarly to the semicolon— but not in exactly the same manner— in that it can seperate different parts of a sentance while drawing the reader’s attention to whatever it is you are writing.

A-Tier:

Elpsis: A very versatile punciation mark that can be used to convey emotion such as confusion or anxiety, to show that part of a quote has been omitted, and yet again it grabs the reader’s attention... are you starting to see a theme here?

Exclamation point: A classic. It’s hard to go wrong with a puncuation mark that can convey so much emotion. Anger, stress, excitement, happiness, you name it!

Interrobang: Most people don’t actually know what this is called. It can also be written as !? or ?! and is used to convey both a question and an exlamation. How was I not taught this in school!?

B-Tier:

Question mark: It has it’s purpose and is certainly useful, but is slightly overused and can get boring at times. Readers tend to blow right past these, sometimes not even noticing that there was a question asked. It has it’s pros and cons. Can you really hate me for not loving it?

Colon: Useful, but kind of overused. Though, I’m a hypocrite because I’ve been using it through this whole list. (Do I really need an example if the enitre list is an example?)

Quotation marks: Amazing for writing diologue, I love this puncuation mark and I love to write dialogue. But it’s definitely one of the more common ones and can easily be sped past or forgotten entirely because of it. You might be thinking, “But if you love to write dialogue then why rank it so low?” My honest answer would be that I accidentally put it lower on the list, only noticed once I saved the file, and was too lazy to fix it. So now I’ve tried to come up with a valid reason for it to be in B-Tier.

C-Tier:

Comma: Way too overused, a semicolon or an em dash would have worked perfectly and would not have been anywhere near as repetitive.

Apostrophe: Useful for contactions and that’s about it. Not to mention the fact that contractions can be considered unprofessional in certain circumstances.

Brackets: Far inferior to parentheses (which were not on this list for some reason!?) because they can only really be used to explain part of a sentence that isn't present in a direct quotation.

D-Tier:

Heiphen: Be honest, when have you used a heiphen properly that would not have instead called for an en dash or an em dash? Heiphens are a good-for-nothing puncuation mark and I will not be apologizing. 

Slash: Only really useful when saying and/or.

Period: Overussed, basic, mid puncuation mark. I’ll admit that it’s necessary, but it’s basic af.

Super Monkey Ball Banana Rumble is great! Like so great! It's the best post-GC Monkey Ball game by a long shot!

There are a few issues like the performance tanking in Battle Mode and the sound design for the ball still lacking, but everything is amazing!

The Adventure Mode is classic Monkey Ball done right. The controls and physics feel so good and are better than Banana Mania. Plus the new Spin Dash move fits in with series much more than a jump button, since you're still using momentum physics with it and you can pull off some amazing skips with it. Seriously, the Spin Dash opens up a lot of speedrunning opportunities and I can't wait for the insane skips that I could do.

The game has some of the best stages in the series since the classics with the level design in general being creative, varied and most importantly, challenging. The later worlds in the Adventure Mode are quite hard, but the EX stages is where the game's difficulty shines where you will likely Fall Out a lot when taking them on the first time. The last 3 EX worlds in particular will literally test your skills, with them falling into late Expert/Master territory. Like the stand out stage is EX10-7, which is so brutal that it might fall in with the likes of Exam-C and Stamina Master as the hardest stages in Monkey Ball history.

Plus we got cutscenes in the series again since Adventure (SMB2 if you're counting only the more traditional Monkey Ball games) and they delivered on them. While the story is simple (which is expected out of Monkey Ball) and not as wacky as SMB2's story, it is carried by the charming character interactions with AiAi, MeeMee, YanYan and Palette being the highlights. It even gets a bit emotional, especially in the last 2 worlds, which you don't really see with this series. I love the cutscenes in this game and I hope future games don't abandon them again.

Then there's the Battle Mode. While it is the weakest part of the game (although I mainly play Monkey Ball for the challenging stages), it is still pretty good. As mentioned, the performance tanks in this mode since there's 16 players which is probably taxing for the 7 year old Switch, but if you can get past that, it is really fun, especially online. The online works for the most part (only had two instances of the game booting me out due to a connection problem) and it can get chaotic. Race and Ba-BOOM! are my favourites, with Race being a larger Monkey Ball stage and since you control like in the main game, you can get away with the same insane skips like in the Adventure Mode. And Ba-BOOM being chaotic as heck where you need to stay on your toes to avoid getting a bomb. However, I do think Banana Hunt is my least favourite. It's not bad, but I do think it's a bit boring when compared to the other modes.

If you're looking for any Party Games like Monkey Target, sorry, but the Battle Mode replaces the Party Games in Banana Rumble. Honesty, I think it's better off that way, considering that certain Party Games were butchered in Banana Mania. I would have no Monkey Target than another one that doesn't match the same qualities as the classics. Also, it's nice to try something entirely new and if that doesn't work out, then they can come back to the Party Games in future games. But IMO, the Battle Mode does its job as being a good distraction from the main game.

In terms of other online stuff in the Battle Mode, it has the most friendliest Battle Pass I've seen in an online game. It lasts for two weeks, but it only has around 12 tiers of cosmetics and if you're good, you could finish it in just one play session. There's also the Lucky Monkey Lottery to win more prizes, but you can only access it if you play online daily (which tbh, since we live in a gaming era where there's paid loot boxes, it's best they leave it like that).

Now lets talk about the presentation and IMO, Banana Rumble has to be the Monkey Ball game with the most soul and passion put into it since the OG games. Firstly, I love the new art style and character designs for the monkeys. They combine the best parts of their GC and Banana Blitz designs, while adding in some new flair into them and they look adorable. Plus they're a lot more expressive than any other game in the series, especially when compared to the Banana Blitz era games. Plus the new characters look really good and you can even play as them. Like all of the major characters in the story of this game are playable, including Dr. Bad-Boon despite not appearing in the story at all.

Visually, the game looks good. While cheap in a few places, the worlds look quite stunning with Caelum being my favourite. Plus there's plenty of attention to detail to the presentation that I like such as the maps for the first 7 worlds being holiday/tourist maps and the last 3 worlds being ancient maps.

In terms of the soundtrack, I think it's great. It's not the best soundtrack in the series, but I do think there are some bangers here and there. My personal favourites being Banana Farm, Rose Garden, Oceanus, Astrum, Race and Ba-BOOM! However, the sound design for the ball is still lacking when compared to the original games and even Banana Splitz, which is a shame (like seriously, they address many issues from Banana Mania, but they couldn't even address the ball SFX).

Overall, Super Monkey Ball is truly back and I'm so happy that it is! Despite a rocky comeback with the remakes, Banana Rumble manages to tilt the series directly into the right direction and proves that RGG Studio can cook up a great Monkey Ball game that can be considered the best game since the originals. In fact, this could be considered as the Crash 4 of the Monkey Ball series. Let's hope it gets enough support to last long and get ported to other consoles down the line. But as of right now, what a great game!

The three biggest landslides were Awesome as I Wanna Be (86.80%), What More Is Out There (88.28), and My Past Is Not Today (90.09)

Impressive that Awesome As I Wanna Be was that big a sweep, considering that a) it isn't a full song and b) it wasn't going against a song described as "Bad" in its own title.

The three closest matches were Life Is A Runway beating Legend You Were Meant to Be (52.88%, 101 to 90), We've Come So Far beating the EqG Opening (52.17%, 84 to 77), and Shake Your Tail beating True Original (51.35%, 72 to 76)

The first upsets were So Much More to Me vs Invisible, and Rise Up! vs A Friend for Life (both C tiers beating A tiers)

Also you queue 52 posts and ur done. @greeting-cards-hourly - lotta funny greeting cards out there. @1000-blank-white-cards-hourly - 1000bwc is a game where you make up the cards so this is just "make up funny jokes and post them" but also i love a self modifying game. @blackjack-cards-hourly - you can imagine this being a bot that posts a poll of hit/stand/(split/double) for each hour and tumblr can get really into trying to count cards against it.
