"So ready for this to be the end," he murmured, almost to himself, "for this to be the twilight of your life, though your life has barely started. You're ready to give up everything." "It's not the end, it's the beginning," I disagreed under my breath. – TWILIGHT
Tonight the sky was utterly black. Perhaps there was no moon tonight–a lunar eclipse, a new moon. A new moon. I shivered, though I wasn't cold. – NEW MOON
The corner of my mouth turned up in a wistful half-smile. "I used to think of you that way, you know. Like the sun. My personal sun. You balanced the clouds nicely for me." He sighed. "The clouds I can handle. But I can't fight with an eclipse." – ECLIPSE
And the sharp memories perfectly recalled: his face when I'd opened my eyes to my new life, to the endless dawn of immortality... that first kiss... that first night... – BREAKING DAWN

Pick A Letter & Send An Ask
So...we have a lot of stories (some barely begun, some well in the works, one finished). I want to write something but need help getting inspired. So, if y'all would like to help us out...pick a title or letter, and send us an ask with a question or suggestion. I'll give you titles & keywords up top here, then at the bottom of the post you'll find a full description if you want to know more. I'm willing to post scenes, quotes, etc. if you ask nicely.
Thank you in advance!

Descriptions:
(quotation marks indicates a blurb we already wrote; no quotations means we wrote it on the spot)
A) Dawn Of Red Death
“Witches, fae, werewolves, vampires and the like are in an all-out war with nonmagical folk (typical humans). The government sees profit in recreating the genes of their abilities and selling them to the nonmagical public, and exploiting the living magical community as pets or servants; the magical community doesn’t want to be cloned or enslaved. Normal everyday folk are scared of their power and potential and want them either locked up or dead; of course, magic folk prefer freedom. Many innocents have died and tensions are running high. Personal stakes are high. Cal saves Davide’s life, and Davide is thrust into a world he had no intentions of mingling with; but after some time spent talking to Cal and Nathan he finds something deep within himself and comes to the decision that the nonmagical folk shouldn’t win this war due to the dire consequences in place for the magical community. So it’s up to our gang of unlikely heroes to end the war for good.”
B) ¿Don’t You Wanna Be The Villain?
“The label “villain” is stuck on someone with questionable methods, but who fights for a good cause. The government is corrupt and greedy, and keeps sending unwilling soldiers to fight White Hawk for them. But White Hawk somehow keeps setting everyone they send free and sending them home...until they send a child to do their dirty work for them.”
C) The Hidden Villain
A crew of heroes has been battling their villain for a long time. During one of their fights, the villain hits the ground a little hard...and with total amnesia, doesn't remember who they are or why they're fighting. The heroes take care of the villain as they recover, & because he likes being taken care of he doesn’t tell them when he starts to remember things (past the point before he became a villain). The heroes find out more than they bargained for as he begins to trust them; that leaves them with a decision of what to do when he does remember, if he doesn’t immediately harm them.
D) Nightstalker Fae’s Dream
Inspired by a tune we heard: “Liar is my instrument, but humans strum their sweet guitar”
A particular type of fae called a Nightstalker gets lost in the human realm after escaping his abusers in the fae realm. Fae hunters are everywhere and Harley is in danger. After a couple years, he meets a sorcerer who doesn't want him dead and has no clue he's fae...and he falls in love. But eventually Azure finds out that Harley is fae, and he despises being lied to. Harley doesn't have much time to figure out if Azure fell too, and to win him back, before fear turns Azure's heart cold.
E) Rising Into Heaven
Tre is a little kid who just happens to be a demon. He escapes Hell by freeing an angel, but if he goes back he'll be in danger. Will the angels let him live, or will they refuse to trust a demon?
F) When Destiny Falls
The DESTINY team chooses a new infant to become the next villain as their current one gets older. But as he grows up, Phoenyx keeps responding differently than they expect, even into adulthood resisting the call of villainy. Meanwhile an academy trains five "heroes" to become egotistical warriors, with the expectation that they will eventually have to fight Phoenyx. When destiny (& the government) calls, will you bend to its will, or will you write your own story & let destiny fall?
G) The Hero Who Can’t Speak
A hero who never speaks intrigues his fans. Most are convinced he's mute or deaf, because no one has heard him speak and he seem to know how to read lips and knows some sign language. It's all speculation...until he finally speaks.
H) But We Could Be Immortal, Darling
“Three low-life thieves makes a plan: one of them (whomever is deemed likeable) woo the crown prince Willow, bide their time, marry him, and when he becomes king, kill him (puts one of them on the throne to pardon all of the others’ crimes). But their pet gets chosen instead - a shy undiscovered queer who wants nothing to do with their plan. They assume he’s afraid enough to cooperate, but while he dates and tries to woo the prince he ends up falling in love. Will their love win, or will Robyn’s fear?”
I) Exposed To The Naïve, Never To The Clever
“An ancient fae, Napoléon, has safely hidden in various theatre crews for a century, moving on as soon as suspicions about his age arise. Everyone he's been exposed to has been naïve & easily convinced that his magic was simply a theatre trick….that is, until an ancient vampire from the same generation, Romulus, joins Napoléon's new theatre. Napoléon has only been exposed to the naïve, and unless they can convince Romulus to keep a secret they might be in real danger for once. These traumatized ancient beings may be each other's end….or each other's eternal love.”
J) Banished To Freedom
- A mafia is experimenting with alternate dimensions; they’re open about this in one dimension & quiet about it in another. Corbyn is from Fade Dimension where they’re open about it. Chance is from Rune Dimension where they’re quiet.
- Banishing Corbyn to Rune Dimension basically blends Corbyn & Chance into one person? one ish person who has memories & emotions from both dimensions, responds to both names, etc.; this can’t be undone once it’s done & leaves them as /essentially/ (sort of) the same person even though they’re different
“Corbyn is tired of living in his universe where everyone is cruel to him…so he takes a huge risk that his father wasn't lying about sending him away and that the magicless universe will be a safe place to hide.
Chance finally got away from his abusers, only to be found again. He'll need a miracle to survive…or a little magic.”
K) The Runaways
Forrest is finally free; he's escaped the cult's grasp and gone on the run. He takes a risk to go into a quiet house to hide....and discovers the Still System. Forrest breaks down crying and unintentionally trips their host Benjamin into front, who decides to not let him fall back into cult hands.
L) Saving Hawthorne
Hawthorne stumbled across the right place to be injured, entirely on accident. Fearless Gen Z rebel Ever rescues the injured monster from crawling up the staircase again and hushes his sobs, not realizing this will launch him into the midst of a war between vampires & lycanthropes. Hawthorne runs away as soon as he can, but Ever has already been noticed. This puts them in danger, which draws Hawthorne back to save his new friend.
M) Eclipse For Your Soul
Samandrael eats souls and drives any human who views its true form mad...until one traumatized little kid doesn't go mad. Samandrael performs his first act of selfless benevolence, and destroys Eclipse's abusive father. He adopts the kid and brings him home. No one understands why this monster would rescue a child and assumes fae kidnapped him. But they simply found someone worth saving.
N) Lightwing’s Journey
((We began this at five years old & it's an ongoing piece. It was originally inspired by Warrior Cats, but became its own thing at some point & continues to expand as a universe and a story.))
Robin is miserable living with his father...so he launches an escape plan. After several failed attempts, he finally escapes his father's territory and slinks into hiding as the elusive Lightwing. It's there that he finds out his father's sinister plan for the other packs...and sets out to dismantle it as the prophecy foretold.
"One kit to wander the lands, see them all, and understand. One kit, light as a feather, to unite the lands and fight together! The darkness is coming, strong and swift, to blind them all and create a rift. One kit to rule all packs, unite them again, and destroy the dark one’s plans. One kit to bring them together, for light as a feather shall fly forever!"
O) The Final Symptom
“Some people find out the hard way that some illnesses are deadly. ~Aiden
An attempt to reframe su*c*de as a symptom of depression, rather than a failure. Not because losing someone to su*c*de isn't tragic, but instead because (from the perspective of someone who has depression) we wanted to show from our perspective that su*c*de is about losing the war to depression no matter how many battles you win, instead of a display of selfishness & lack of care about those around you. One of the symptoms of depression is that it makes you feel like a burden on your loved ones…a burden you feel the need to remove so they can be happy. So here is our understanding: The Final Symptom. ~Nico”
P) Hidden Healers Shatter
This is our understanding of becoming a system. The basic idea is, you're someone who wants to heal &/or realizes you need to heal in a household of people who refuse to, or don't realize they need to, heal...so you hide, and you stay multiple (viewed as "shattering") to survive.
Q) Correrina’s Guest
[unnamed MC alien]'s grandfather sold him to a much older, creepy man who doesn't respect anyone. [unnamed MC] ran to Earth hoping to escape his "husband", but Hayden ends up finding him anyway and kidnapping the person he fell in love with on Earth. So [MC] launches a rescue mission...and reconnects with the family he was forced to abandon in his search for safety.
R) The Moment Death Became Rebirth
Grey Morrison is tired of his boring, pampered CEO life. So he fakes his death to escape his job, his life, and his wife. What he finds on the other side as Trace Vera was more than he bargained for...and everything he desperately needed.

Let us begin again ringing in the New Year here in Rapture. Here’s a little tribute based off Johnny Dombrowski’s marvelous illustration though with a slightly older Wurlitzer model instead. Those new Bubbler jukeboxes always seem to jam and play only a few seconds of a song.
As always, we’ll take this time to remember Patti Page, singer of “Doggie in the Window” who also passed away on New Year’s Day.
We’re celebrating another 10th anniversary of a sister game this year with Fallout 3 and a new set of sounds wafting in from Appalachia.
See if your favorite record, 8-track, cassette, or wax cylinder was featured this year:

W e l c o m i n g t h e 『F U L L M O O N』;
August 26th, welcomes in the FULL MOON in PISCES
Eclipse season has officially come to a close,Virgo season has begun, and Mercury has exited retrograde.
This Full Moon in Pisces ueges us to explore our spiritual depths.Allow the watery depths of this Pisces Moon to envelope you; to guide you towards the right people, places, and opportunities for your greatest expansion.
Breathe those easy breaths,my love. The Full Moon rises up above. Pisces dawns new life outside. Anchoring in those shifts in stride. What magic lies within you? Under these deep and loving Pisces skies?

One response is good enough for m e (will try to add the read more link when I'm on my laptop)
Hel originally wanted to be more hands off in relation to royalty. She wanted to be maybe more of a royal messenger, to explore and see other areas. She had an older brother who was to be king.
She became queen due to plague. Her family was wiped out, thus forcing her into the position. It wasnt a happy occasion but she had held her head high.
She is magical! I'm still debating what but I'm thinking maybe she has a few light inspired spells she can fling at attackers to temporarily blind them.
Hel has no suitors, not really known why. The council, whom act more like advisors, are gently pushing her to it. I have no ideas. Give me ships. H e l p
One reason is believed to be Galaxy's fault. Big and scary and protective. And speaking of Galaxy...
Fnaf sneaking in! There are Automatons. A lot are in Hel's land.
Lots of people were wiped from the plague mentioned earlier so lots of Automatons were needed to replace the dead. Those ones were built quickly and are basic (they're the staff bots basically).
Hel actually supports Automatons and basically gave them rights where elsewhere they're worked till they can't function then scrapped. Some leave other kingdoms to stay in hers.
There's an Automaton king she would've accepted if he wasn't...questionable. I imagine they've butted heads a few times. (*pokes @peste-bubonica*)
Automatons are somewhat feared as it's believed they're made by putting a soul in them, thus giving them thoughts. Some believe, if true, the soul may be trapped and not able to be given peace. The process of making them is unknown and very guarded
Automatons creators get inspiration from one another. Galaxy was made first, someone took inspiration and made Eclipse, Sun and Moon. Original guy then got inspiration and made Dusk and Dawn. The FNAF crew were made by someone wanting to help orphanages, thus they made them more animal like to appeal to the children.
Galaxy was a guard for Hel gifted by a friend. She was later gifted Dusk and Dawn too. Dusk acts as a lady in waiting while Dawn sneaks around protecting Hel from the shadows
That's it so far! If any curious then send an ask pfft I think I've got everything at the moment
I've been thinking too hard on fantasy all day now Queen Hel has a history and I'm working fnaf into the world Anyone wanna hear

[ GHOA MANKHAD : About the Character / LFRP ]
B A S I C S
Name : Ghoa Mankhad. Aliases : Ghoa Kharlu, Ghoa Kha, Tsakhlai (black market alias), other tribal names. Gender : Female, cisgendered. Age : Twenty-four winters. Race : Au Ra - Xaela. Birthplace : Azim Steppe - Eastern Coastlands. Current Residence : A bit of everywhere, but mostly Ul’dah and Kugane at current. Relationship Status : A handful of non-committed, casual involvements. (Even though she’s technically married, but good luck prying that information out of her!) Romantic Orientation : Demi-romantic, non-monogamous. Sexual Orientation : Pansexual. Occupation : Black market alchemist and poisoner. Occasional healer-for-hire. Small-time con artist. But her preferred job? Hanging off the arms of the wealthy and generous. Enemies : Probably more than a few NPC enemies, but no PC enemies. (Yet!)
A P P E A R A N C E
Hair : Mid-back length. Starts a dark, inky blue at the crown and gradually fades into a silver-blue at the ends. The style varies depending on her mood, but small white-gray feathers and/or flowers are usually accompanying whatever style she settles on. Skin : Medium brown with bronze undertones. Smooth, soft, and obviously well cared for. Eyes : Light silver-white with bright white limbal rings. Height : Slightly below average for a female Au Ra at four fulm, ten ilm (4′10″). Markings : None that are especially notable. No tattoos or other body modifications. A few small scars here and there, but none that one could be faulted for overlooking entirely. Physique : Petite and soft. Distinctly feminine, even if lacking in exaggerated curvature.
P E R S O N A L I T Y
Overview : Ghoa is best and most succinctly described as an unrepentant hedonist ever on the prowl for the next luxury to indulge in and the next thrill to get her blood pumping. But naturally, there’s far, far more to her than meets the eye. Positive Traits : Intelligent, cultured, curious, adventurous, charismatic. Negative Traits : Self-centered, manipulative, capricious, stubborn, work-avoidant. Quirks : Her tail often gives away her emotions, whether or not she’s trying to hide them. Always seeking some sort of thrill or excitement which can sometimes get her involved with the wrong sort or in over her head. Will play flirtatious with anything with a pulse so long as she thinks it stands a chance of endearing her to them and that she can get something out of it (and sometimes even if it won’t). Religion / Philosophy : Follows traditional Xaelan belief in the Dusk Mother Nhaama and Dawn Father Azim. Also shares a clan-specific reverence for both the sea and the storm. However, despite her beliefs and the occasional ritual or platitude she indulges in, she’s become more or less non-practicing since leaving the Steppe.
Likes : Traveling, the finer things in life, new experiences, new people, anything that gives a thrill, criminal types, the ocean, thunderstorms, birds. Favorite Foods : Anything expensive and indulgent. Seafood and sweets, especially. Favorite Drinks : Anything top shelf or bought for her. Especially rum and red wine. Favorite Colors : Dark blue, white, black, gold, silver. Dislikes : Strict traditions/laws, working, dependency, inactivity, working, anyone who tries to hold onto her too tightly, mopey or aggressively antisocial types. Positive Habits / Hobbies : Traveling, exploring, dancing, shopping, learning new reagents and alchemical techniques, does excellent work (even if she hates work itself). Negative Habits / Hobbies : Partying, drinking (often), smoking (occasionally), recreational drugs (occasionally), one-night stands, getting involved with the wrong sorts.
R P H O O K S
FELLOW XAELA : This is a pretty wide hook that could encompass a lot of things. Fellow Mankhadi and Kharlu would be interesting to set up potential backstory with. Ghoa has also spent varying lengths of time with other tribes before leaving the Steppe, leaving that avenue for backstory connections open, too. Or we could start wholly fresh! Just keep in mind that Ghoa is pretty non-tribal, so there may be some conflict with more tribal sorts (but I’m 100% down for conflict-based interactions!).
BUSINESS CONTACTS : Need some poisons or potions on the down-low? Fellow merchant looking to strike a trade arrangement? Got literally any other idea for a business hook that I would most certainly love to hear? Let’s make it happen!
MORALLY QUESTIONABLE? NO PROBLEM! : Ghoa is the queen of keeping questionable company, finding herself often drawn to those of a more criminal element not only due to her work, but because of how thrilling it can be. (Not to mention that it never hurts to have a couple of people in one’s pocket for those extra special jobs that need to be done.) So give me your thieves, thugs, druglords, smugglers, etc.!
NEED ARMCANDY? : If your character is wealthy, generous with their money, and appreciates having the company of a charming, attractive woman, Ghoa’s your armcandy! She’s a shameless gildigger whose enjoyment of the finer things in life is only eclipsed by her enjoyment of having them bought for her. But at least they’ll get the joy of sharing her company out of the deal, right?
If you’ve got another idea, let’s hear it! I just tossed this handful of ideas up for brevity’s sake (and because I’m running out of steam writing them). But if you’ve got an idea for an interaction that doesn’t fit any of the above, I definitely wanna hear it!
O O C I N F O R M A T I O N
Server : Balmung Timezone : Central (US). Availability : Week nights from 5PM - 11PM CST until raid starts back in Patch 4.2. Saturdays 12PM to whenever. Sundays vary depending on how much I’ve got to do around the house, so tentatively.. 5PM - 11PM CST, maybe a little earlier / later.
Post Style : I naturally tend towards paragraph-style RP when left to my own devices, but ultimately I mirror what I get or what is most appropriate for the situation! Lore Preference : I prefer to stick to lore as much as possible, but with a little flexibility for the grey areas. (So long as that flexibility doesn’t get too out of hand.) Seeking : More RP partners in general! I love intricate, plot-heavy RP just as well as casual, lighthearted event-going RP. So I’m looking to make more contacts both to delve into serious plot with, as well as more friends to hit up things like Tavern Nights, Pub Crawls, Festivals, Balls, and other such server events with. (Because they’re even more fun in groups!) I would prefer to RP in-game, but I’m also willing to do Discord scenes as long as they conclude in a timely manner and don’t leave me in an awkward position with in-game RP. Alternatively, I would potentially be open to one-on-one Discord RP that is AU / non-cannon (i.e. exists in its own bubble and doesn’t affect Ghoa’s actual continuity in-game), especially for those of you who play on a server other than Balmung! Will Do : Mature, sexual, dark, violent, psychological, and/or criminal themes. Coarse and explicit language. Mild to moderate injury/incapacitation without being given prior notice. Ask First : Long-term and/or permanent significant injury and disfigurement. Captivity or imprisonment, either long or short term. ERP, as I'm not always up for writing out sexual scenes (especially if there's no plot advancement purpose behind it or if we don't already have an established RP history together). Won’t Do : Character death. Any sort of mature RP (sexual, violent, dark, etc.) involving underage characters or players.
C O N T A C T I N F O R M A T I O N
In-game : Ghoa Mankhad. Discord : Jaliqai#1327.
#Restless Seas#Ghoa Mankhad#long post#signal boosts appreciated <3#been a while#and Ghoa's been refined a lot since I first posted one of these#so it was time for an update!#FFXIV#FF14#Balmung#RP#Balmung RP

An eclipse and the end of Ugarit
Here's a story about what might've been one of the oldest records of an eclipse ever: an omen-text from the ancient Syrian city of Ugarit. Right on the Mediterranean coast, Ugarit was a prosperous mercantile city under Hittite protection for most of the Late Bronze Age; its inhabitants wrote in a cuneiform alphabet, traded with Cretans and Greeks, and left their mark on the Canaanite culture that forms the background for much of the Hebrew Bible. Baal, their storm-god, lives on as a Christian demon-name today.

Sometime around the early 12th century BC, Ugarit was sacked by a coalition of marauders known as the Sea Peoples, never to be resettled. The Sea Peoples' ravages were part of the most monumental event in history you've never heard of -- the Late Bronze Age collapse, a time when nearly every major city in the Near East was destroyed, the network of great Bronze Age empires evaporated, and a cloud of dust and famine descended over history, clearing centuries later to reveal a world of new populations speaking Greek and Hebrew, writing in recognizable alphabets, living in clans and working in iron. Since eclipses can be dated almost down to the minute, our omen-text might shed some light on the chronology of the collapse; on the other hand, it could offer uniquely ancient information about the earth's rotation, which has varied over time due to the gravitational pull of the moon and climate-related changes in the earth's mass distribution.
IF it's about an eclipse, that is.

The document is a clay tablet called KTU 1.78 (drawing above from Dietrich and Loretz 2002). It's both poorly-written and abbreviated, and a "literal" translation is something like
SIX.DAY.NEW MOON HIYYARU.ENTER SUN.HER GATEKEEPER RESHEP
and on the back, either
SO.VASSALS.SEARCH OUT PREFECT
or possibly
TWO LIVERS.EXAMINED DANGER!
Not incredibly enlightening. Let's get into it.
First, the two unfamiliar words. Hiyyaru is a month, cognate with Iyar in the modern Jewish calendar, and suggesting that the document starts with a date. Reshep is an underworld god equivalent to the Babylonian plague-god Nergal, the planet Mars, and a lot of bad luck. If the document is astronomical in nature, it concerns an event where Mars was observed close to the sun.

(”And now by looking in the opposite direction from the plumb-line, we are able to locate the sky.”)
Sawyer and Stephenson (1970), the first to study KTU 1.78 in detail, noted that a solar eclipse has to happen on the day of the new moon, not on the sixth day of the new moon's quarter (think about it!). Thus, if the document does describe an eclipse, conclude that "SIX" can't be a date. Reasoning a little circularly (on the assumption that an eclipse is being described), they decide it can't even be "SIX" but a homonym meaning "SHAME". The event was a bad omen, a source of shame for the day. "ENTER", meanwhile, is treated as meaning "SET" or "DISAPPEAR". Such circumlocutions for eclipses are common in ancient texts; Stephenson elsewhere (2008) recalls ancient Chinese descriptions of "flames eating the sun" and "the day dawning twice", and Sawyer and Stephenson compare Isaiah 24:23:
Then the moon will be abashed, and the sun ashamed.
If the omen is threatening, the back must be its interpreted threat, and Sawyer and Stephenson arrive at the translation,
The day of the new moon in the month of Hiyar was put to shame. The Sun went down (in the day-time) with Mars in attendance. (This means that) the overlord will be attacked by his vassals.
This, they say, must be referring to a total eclipse, of which only four passed over Ugarit in the relevant period, in 1406, 1375, 1340, and 1223 BC. Of these, the one on May 3, 1375 occurred during Hiyyaru, which they identify as April-May by a parallel with the Babylonian calendar. It also during a high point in Ugaritic scholarship. Unfortunately, Mars wasn't visible at the time, leaving the Reshep reference mysterious.
In 1989, the question was taken up again in Nature by de Jong and van Soldt (see also Walker 1989). After redating Hiyyaru to February-March, they decided that the best candidate eclipse is the one on March 5, 1223. The agreement with the text is impressive: Mars was close to the sun and visible, and it took place during the sixth hour after sunrise (agreeing with "SIX" for the first word and an Egyptian method of time-reckoning). de Jong and van Soldt are also able to show that the implications for the rotation rate of the earth agree with astronomical data.

(Actual Neo-Babylonian eclipse list, from the 400s BC, by which point astronomers were able to predict eclipses.)
However, the text itself demanded closer study. Pardee and Swerdlow, in *Nature* in 1993, rejected de Jong and van Soldt's interpretation of "SIX" on grammatical grounds. The word "SIX" was a cardinal number, meaning it couldn't refer to the sixth hour of anything, but could refer to the six days of the new moon, that is, the first lunar quarter. They concluded that the text probably didn't refer to an eclipse at all -- and after all, nobody had really proved that it did -- but an observation of Mars appearing near the setting sun, throughout the six days of the new moon of Hiyyaru.
Then Dietrich and Loretz blew the whole thing wide open, arguing against Pardee and Swerdlow's grammatical point while also interpreting the writing and location of the text. The text was found, unusually, on the ground of the palace gate, next to a broken and unrelated civil service registry. The handwriting was a quick scrawl that didn't match the small, elegant writing of the palace scribes, the last line, "DANGER!" in their reading, drooped, and the whole thing gave a sense that it was written in a hurry. It's natural to guess, then, that the tablet was no ordinary astronomical observation, but a cause for genuine alarm; that the event was a truly foreboding eclipse, and its danger was confirmed by the liver-omen described breathlessly on the back side.
The two omens were recorded at the temple (a separate center of power and scribal activity from the palace, as in most Bronze Age Near Eastern societies), and the tablet was rushed to the palace, where, along the way, it was dropped. Why would a courier with an urgent message for the palace drop a tablet and not recover it? If they encountered a panicked crowd along the way. What would've caused a panic in one of Ugarit's major streets? The Sea Peoples.

(Ramses III fighting off the Sea Peoples, from his tomb at Medinet Habu.)
Carbon dating has placed the destruction of Ugarit around 1190 BC (Kaniewski et al. 2011), and in fact, there was an eclipse around then -- a partial eclipse, which is why Sawyer and Stephenson missed it, but one with 94% of the sun occluded, and with Mars nearby, on January 21, 1192 BC. If Dietrich and Loretz's hypothesis is right, this gives a nearly exact date for the destruction of Ugarit.
All of this is just a story, of course. One can imagine other explanations for the tablet, and in time people probably will. But to think that as the plague-god swallowed the sun, the marauders began to engulf the city -- that some panicked scribes and a sweaty-fingered courier recorded for eternity, not just the end of their city, but the beginning of the end of their whole civilization -- well -- what a story!
