The Mariana Trench: Earth’s Deepest and Most Mysterious Place
Introduction The Mariana Trench, located in the western Pacific Ocean, is the deepest known part of the world’s oceans. Stretching about 2,550 kilometers (1,580 miles) long and over 69 kilometers (43 miles) wide, this undersea chasm reaches depths of 10,994 meters (36,070 feet) at its lowest known point—the Challenger Deep. To put this into perspective: If Mount Everest (8,849 meters/29,032…

Prompt 278
You know what I’ve gotten obsessed with and inspired by? Dredge.
You know what is also fun? Merfolk. What’s even better? Lovecraftian corrupted merfolk. Especially if say, one goes with the Lazarus Waters being a form of ectoplasm. So, in this? Lazarus waters are like lakes, while Amity Park, thanks to the Portal, and the barriers? It is an entire sea.
There are islands, small areas that were once the tips of buildings that have gathered more landmass around them. There are mangroves, trees not like anything on earth or anywhere else stretching up in canopies dark enough to block out the sun, yet lit by the green waters.
It goes deep. Mariana Trench deep, despite it being impossible. The GIW have explored for caves or tunnels, they’ve tried to find some sort of explanation, but there isn’t one.
Now all that ecto? That has an effect on people. They mutate, they change, they adapt. Anywhere else would have been a slow death- something the GIW might have even been counting on. But Amity Park? It was founded by witches, it was the hotspot for the supernatural, even before the Fentonwork Portal. They’ve been dealing with this sort of energy in microdoses from the moment they first began to live in the city in any generation.
But they begin to adapt. Shift into something… other. Some stay contaminated, clinging to human forms as they form homes on the tiny islands, fishing and farming what they can. Others become Liminal, almost seeming to meld with fish, some similar to ones of the Living and others something just to the left. Similar yes, but not quite… right. And then there are those that have truly melded with the energy of the dead, forms torn asunder by it, ripped apart and made anew by it.
The first sign back when the barrier was activated, when they could no longer leave and were trapped were the fish in the lake. And now they are the same, with gazes of something Else, with gnashing teeth and a hunger gnawing at where hearts once were.
But they aren’t monsters. They’re still themselves. Just a little… Other now.

"In a study published today in Science Advances, researchers from the Ocean Discovery League reveal that only a minuscule fraction of the deep seafloor has been imaged. Despite covering 66% of Earth's surface, the deep ocean remains largely unexplored.
The study, "How Little We've Seen: A Visual Coverage Estimate of the Deep Seafloor," is the first to document that, in decades of deep-sea exploration, humans have observed less than 0.001% of the deep seafloor. This total area is roughly the size of Rhode Island or one-tenth the size of Belgium.

The deep ocean, defined as being deeper than 200 meters, sustains diverse ecosystems and provides essential services, including oxygen production, climate regulation, and crucial pharmaceutical discoveries, and plays a critical role in maintaining the health of our planet."

I hope you've leveled up to the max, little hero. I'm the final boss down here in the inferno.
Scaly-foot Snail (Chrysomallon squamiferum) AKA Volcano Snail
Hydrothermal vents about 2-3 kilometers under the Indian Ocean
Status: Endangered
Threats: Deep-sea mining
---
Ever since I found this snail (which I officially dub Most Badass Snail on the earth), I've decided that they have to be the epic final boss level of... something. I even found their theme song.*
They are the only animal on Earth partially made of iron sulphides. Those gold parts? Literally pyrite. They hang out around deep-sea thermal vents that spew hot sulfur from the belly of the earth, soaking up those minerals to form literal iron armor scales over their foot.
So, like I said. Badass.
(Sorry, I got a little obsessed)
*I really enjoy this composer, by the way

🌊🌊Hey guys🌊🌊
why don't we all go to sign this petition to stop deep sea mining before it starts? Sounds ✨️fun✨️ doesn't it?
It doesn't seem like it could do a lot, does it? Well it could and even if you don't believe it, why not sign it? Nothing there to lose other than some seconds out of your day✨️✨️

Deep sea mining: a new arms race?
Until very recently, the industry has attempted to justify its existence on the greenwash argument that deep sea mining is a necessary evil for the energy transition. In other words, they claim destroying the extremely fragile deep sea ecosystem that we barely understand will somehow help win the battle against climate change. But day after day, new scientific evidence suggests that the metals from the seabed are not needed and that the damage could be irreversible. Twenty-five governments have already either rejected deep sea mining or called for a much more cautious approach, and the industry’s political play is failing. In a high-risk pivot, mining companies are now trying to convince investors and decision makers by telling the world that the minerals from the seafloor are paramount for military purposes. Deep sea mining must be stopped before it starts to prevent further environmental destruction, further stockpiling of weapons and fomenting of conflict. The deep sea mining industry fanning the flames of the geopolitical crisis to justify its existence? Companies driving the development of deep sea mining are guilty of greenwashing and hypocrisy. Some of them have been lobbying at the International Seabed Authority, and beyond, to get a greenlight to start deep sea mining commercial operations, especially the Canadian-based frontrunner, The Metals Company (TMC).  TMC seems willing to say whatever it thinks will help it make a profit off plundering the deep sea. One moment, TMC will pretend to care about the planet by pushing the baseless claim that metals mined from the deep sea are essential for the clean energy transition. Then, it’ll be openly supportive of calls to develop deep sea mining in order to  strengthen US military capabilities. Minerals, like those found in the seabed, are highly sought out by weapon companies and are increasingly in use for military purposes (for example, in advance weapon systems and laser precision-guided weapons).
In case you are still not convinced

Variation I

Thinking abt my salmonid ocs again... I need to design them soooo bad but at the same time I have yet to decide what to do with their clothes as while the traditional battle salmon pant would suffice my need to do needless extra work for the sake of worldbuilding is powerful indeed
#rat rambles#oc posting#splat posting#to be clear the main reason that this is a thing Im considering carefully is because these are historical salmonids#they would have lived about 200 years ago give or take a few decades#so comparably modern history but still old enough that cultral differences should be considered#mainly these guys are mostly salmonids from more wealthy tribes and only two of them regularly engage in combat#the other two are a part of off branches of the main tribe that handle trade and nature preservation respecively#the nature reservation being especially important as they have a recently discovered king salmonid which is already a big deal but said#king is also a goldie so its like a once a thousand year sort of event#now of course this newly found king is set to be cared for and as such will likely not drop for several decades at least#but given the importantce of this event making sure that the deep sea ecosystem is ready for it is vital#now one issue is that usually kings are allowed to continue their work until their health declines too much but usually kings are assumed#to be on the battlefield since statistically thats just the most likely job for them to have#but this goldie king is a part of the trading sect of his tribe so he is quite ill equipped to be on the front lines and survive#so theres been some conflicts within the different sects about how this potential issue should be addressed#and thats where the main cast comes in as the main four characters all try to work together to find a solution to appease all three sects#and by that I mean they fail miserably as this is the origin story of eternity's old tribe and its founder is one of the four mains lol#hey on the bright side only one of them die within the main plot but the downside is that she was indeed murdered by her insel ex gf#oh og eternity how terrible you are but tbf she was heavily manipulated into most of her actions and beliefs

This is so cool! Finding animal life beneath hydrothermal vents is incredible! Some of the things they found in the underwater cave systems in earth's volcanic crust include snails and tube worms. These tube worms alongside chemosynthetic bacteria, use the hydrogen sulphide in the chemical plumes from thermal vents by oxidising it to create energy and sugars to survive. How cool is that?!
I think this article also really demonstrates how important it is to conserve and protect lesser known ecosystems and species.

Osedax worms are known to feed on the collagen itself by making holes in the whale's skeletal structure. These holes can also serve as a form of protection from nearby predators. Osedax is Latin for "bone-eater". It can grow up to three inches long.
Tumblr media
Twitter and tiktok are like a coral reef
It’s loud and bright and productive and glamorous. It’s fast-paced and things cycle through the environment in hours. Everyone is trying to fight for their position in the food chain and stay Relevant. There are lots of pretty things to look at. If something gets Popular it has an impact on everything around it, for a brief time until the next big thing arrives. To an outside observer it’s chaos but to those involved it has order, reason, a Purpose.
Tumblr is like a deep-sea ecosystem.
Things are slow and weird. Memes bounce around for years and even decades. People exist in their little isolated hydrothermal vent communities of mutuals. Sometimes something big happens (suez canal, November 5th, Queen Lizzie kickin’ it) and we all gather around like a whale fall but for the most part we’re just snootling around in the sand doing whatever the fuck. Occasionally someone comes down and shines their flashlight around and immediately leaves and tells their friends about what freaky shit we have going on in the depths. We don’t care. We’re very busy talking about Our Friend Jonathan from a book published in the 1800s like worms slowly digesting the bones of a long-dead organism.
