What kind of sound are Theo's... noises... intended to be? Snorts? Mouth sounds? Choking sounds? Stuffy nose sounds? I feel like I imagine them as a different thing every time I read them lol

Almost all of the above, really! Nasally grunts, snorts, whines, growls, guttural noises that sound like he's clearing his throat or choking on his own air... Theo makes all manner of noises. Not on purpose.

His "noises" are unconscious vocalizations most of the time. They're akin to vocal tics. The utterances are louder, more pronounced and more frequent the more stressed he is. It takes quite a bit of effort and discomfort to suppress his noises once he feels the urge brewing (if he even catches it in time, because most of the time he isn't even fully aware that he's doing it). He does his utmost to keep them choked down, but to his embarrassment, some grunts and gags always slip through.

Also, often his laugh can sound like "a noise" since it can be more of a gargling wheeze than a proper expression of mirth. His smoking habit hasn't helped the, er, phlegminess of its sound.

A counterpoint to his common stress-sounds is his habit of making quiet humming noises when he's feeling contented and relaxed. He only does it when in exceedingly good spirits - so as you might imagine, he hasn't had much cause to hum in many years.

the first time i read the odyssey i was eight and it was an abridged version intended for younger readers. the first time my dad went to rehab i was eight and in the commotion of it nobody told me what was happening. i remember that his step was different — heavy and uneven — and that he seemed to flow in and out of himself, sometimes my father and sometimes some terrible other i wanted to hide from. and then he was gone for a while, and no one seemed sure when he would be back. it did not occur to me at this age to doubt odysseus’ course, or to question his version of events. i rooted for him, because his original failure proved he was the best of all fathers — every time i was in the path of my own father’s plough, i thought he would forget the trick of insanity and fail to see his child’s face in mine.

One thing I’ve learned in drama school is since in Shakespeare’s time there wasn’t really safe drinking water, everyone drank beer all the time to stay hydrated (including children who drank “small beer” which had less but still an okay amount of alcohol), which would mean that everyone would definitely have a higher tolerance than modern people, but would still be kinda drunk all the time. The City of Brass, being in the plane of Fire, does not have access to much water naturally, but their mortal residents would still need to stay hydrated in some way despite the lack of water native to the plane of Fire. it never ceases to grate me that the public perception of anxiety disorders is now so ass that when faced with someone being annoying or obnoxious online everyone's first impulse is to respond like "oh now the cant phone a restaurant crowd has shit to say" even if the obnoxious person in question has never once said any such thing about having phone anxiety. or any anxiety at all. the impulse to assume, with no evidence, that whoever youre pissed at today MUST be debilitatingly, clinically anxious, which of course explains how they are so annoying, and also makes them a hypocrite (which then allows you to smugly call attention to this hypocrisy, and everyone nods along, even though, and i cannot stress this enough, you invented the hypocrisy when you armchair diagnosed some rando). and then when u call it out people will argue that nooooo ofc they didnt mean anxiety disorder havers, they just meant someone who has the exact symptoms of anxiety. this person who i just made up isn't actually debilitated by their anxiety, they're just pretending it impacts them that badly for clout and sympathy, but i see through them, and i know based on their vibe that they'd be part of an online hate mob, which of course has a causal relationship to not being able to order a coffee (did i mention btw that not being able to order a coffee makes you a pathetic loser, and ofc being such a pathetic loser it's immediately obvious to everyone that you have whichever opinions im denigrating in our current online argument. obviously. because they're the pathetic loser opinions, and there's literally no better shorthand for 'pathetic loser' than describing a symptom of an anxiety disorder)... do you see it.

It wasn’t that River was small for his age, exactly, only that he tended to fold in on himself as an adult and the effect was much more jarring when he didn’t have to pretend he was two heads smaller than he was. Least when he was grown, Lamb could rest assured that it was only a game he played. Sometimes it had even been funny. It wasn’t all that fucking funny anymore.  Beyond that, it was River, without a shadow of a doubt. Same tragic puppy dog eyes. Same eagerness to please, if the deferential manner with which he’d referred to Lamb back in Taverner’s office was any indication, although tempered now by a certain degree of what appeared to be genuine fear. Fear of what, Lamb couldn’t begin to guess at. Getting in trouble, probably, which really shouldn’t have been the kid’s main concern. Getting in trouble was a hobby for him. Lamb had already resigned himself to the fact. “And you don’t remember me, do you.” “No,” River said. His brow crinkled in what was apparently distress. “No, I—sorry, sir, I don’t.” “Crying shame,” said Lamb, turning back to the passenger window. It was a shame, if he was being honest. He didn’t know how to get under this River’s skin the way he did with the other one. It would take work to understand him now. “I’m a fucking delight.”

Dani really is the character ever. She came from nothing, she broke the laws of the multiverse, she built a pet cat at like twelve, she does drag racing, pivotal parts of her appearance have changed five times in the span of one year, she’s the captain of a ship, she named herself after a soda brand, she died and came back to life, she’s begrudgingly kinda into the most pathetic man alive, she collects all kinds of definitely toxic substances from her adventures, she was a child prodigy, she was almost killed by a sheep, she even has adhd.
