Rogues in fantasy TTRPGs that aren't Dungeons & Dragons
Tumblr media
Sometimes it's called Rogue, sometimes it's called Thief. It can be a class, or a template, or a sample build for a classless system. It can be pigeonholed to a couple of roles and specialties, or wide open to interpretations and extensive customisation.
But any self-respecting fantasy game, chock-full as it may be with mighty warriors and powerful wizards, needs a disreputable little shit: the rogue, the thief, the scoundrel, the one who strays. And it's a truly universal archetype. The people in the margins are the salt of the earth, and a setting without them is just… unseasoned.
"The thief gives us a chance to play someone closer to heart, someone who's not strong or possessed of magical talents, someone who has to rely on wit and stealth to survive. Someone, we can imagine, who might very well be just like us. And in being more like us, it's clear that the thief is not just a column of percentile chances to pick locks and disarm traps; she is blessed with as many different skills and appearances as there are crimes to be committed. And that's quite a lot." [x]
So here's a sneak peek at the Thief/Rogue in:
Shadowdark (2023) - gridmark and rules-light dungeoncrawl
Tales of the Valiant (2024) - a D&D 5e variant
Rolemaster Unified (2022) - famously crunchy and customisable
GURPS 4e Dungeon Fantasy (2007) - classic classless system
Ars Magica 5th Edition (2004) - the historically grounded one (in Europe 1200 AD), very customisable
Four Against Darkness (2017) - solo dungeoncrawl
Blades in the Dark (2017) - where everyone's a rogue!
Pathfinder 2e (2024) - a million rules and it's all 3.5's fault
Lankhmar: City of Thieves (2015) - the Fafhrd and Gray Mouser setting, with the Savage Worlds system
Daggerheart (2025) – a more narrative, D12-based system

so I’m thinking about this post and the concept of a speedrunning adventurer in a D&Desque universe. Like, they’re better than average at moving around and stuff and they can take care of themselves at least as well as the average adventurer, but they’re gods on earth in their one specific dungeon. But since most of their adventures don’t take place in that one dungeon, a lot of their time in other places is spent “looking for glitches” and intentionally running into walls and stuff, looking for unintended results.
other members of the party will be all “how the hell did you even get in there??” and the speedrunner will be like “y’know, I’m not 100% sure, and I haven’t been able to try to replicate it yet since I have to find a way out first and I might have softlocked”

I understand that tall men are our POV characters, but surely being like a foot taller than everyone around them would have some occasional consequences

A lot of fantasy goes with Tolkien explanation of fantasy racism being the result of ancestral grudge.
Then you got Dungeon Meshi which is like:
"Elves and Dwarves hate each other because their respective empires make up 2/3 of the imperial core and are stuck in a cold war as the planet runs out of uncolonized land to grab. Elves are able to live in pastoral paradise because they've horded most of the settings farm-able land and natural capital, displacing and mass murdering any natives in the process. Orcs and goblins are hostile to other races because there the primary targets of an ongoing slavery and genocide campaign. The dividing line between human and inhuman is arbitrarily assigned via a phrenological pseudo-science that quickly falls apart when questioned by anyone who wasn't indoctrinated into it since birth."

i’ve seen too many people arguing that marcille was already a full grown adult when she went to school at 35 despite literally all of the canon evidence indicating otherwise

Wyll Ravengard ❤️‍🔥 Painted this completely unplanned and unexpected portrait last night. I guess the heavy rain traditionally brought me inspiration after all, even though it's now really hard to not read all sound of thunder as explosions. Unfortunately russian attacks on our homes happen more often than thunderstorms. Wonder if this will ever go back to normal. Either way, happy with our handsome boy, excited to do more BG3 art when I have more time between commissions and charity work. If you like my art, consider tipping! MY TIP JARS HERE ❤️‍🩹
