Good thing #84: I painted pottery with a beloved friend today. When she was putting stuff away, I saw the sun shine through the window and it was soft and beautiful. I could hear her voice across the room behind some shelves, warm as always. She laughed nearby as I watched the light.

It kinda irks me when people call Black Mask "Truekechi", because that's not really the case...? Not entirely, at least.

I mean yes, of course, Black Mask IS a part of Akechi's personality, I'm not denying that. The thing is, that it isn't Akechi's WHOLE personality. This kid just went through the biggest crashout of his life, his whole plan he's been meticulously working on for years failed, and the worst part is that it didn't even lead to what he was after, so he didn't even get the revenge he wanted. Of course he's unstable and edgy, I mean, who wouldn't be?

That is not to say that his anger and edginess aren't a part of his "true self"; I'm sure that his glee at taking out shadows is absolutely real, for example, but I believe that it comes from him just being angry in general- at Shido, at Maruki, and at himself. Akechi is rough around the edges, has a short temper and has a tendency to look at others from above, but the situation he's in boosts these parts of his personality as a sort of defense mechanism.

I think that his mementos conversations give a really good insight into this too; Perhaps it's due to my older age compared to the characters in-game, but a lot of Akechi's lines feel so... Forced on his side? He's the one to bring up that other Thieves probably don't want to have him on the team, or that they're unsettled by how he fights, but nobody even said anything about it in the first place...? Even other characters seem kinda done with his act, either that or they accept him being on the team due to their shared goals; Some are even quite nice and friendly, all things considered. This just feels like Akechi's self-loathing twisting itself into this kind of quips because he himself doesn't want to get too comfortable on the team; He's scared of growing closer to the other Thieves, so he tries to keep them at arm's length. He can't just tell them "I think I'm a horrible person" straight up (his pride wouldn't let him), so he has to make himself "unappealing" in other ways.

There's also the other side of these conversations, where you can see him just... Being a kid. He whines about being hungry, or thirsty, or his legs getting stiff in the car, he talks about mundane things with other Thieves like graduation or sports... He's just a teenager as much as his teammates are- it's just that the others weren't hired as assassins at 15 and didn't grow up obsessed with the plan to kill their father. His emotional development and maturation process have clearly been impacted, on top of everything else he had to deal with. So he may act "adult" and more mature than others at first glance (at least before he reveals Loki), but inside he is just as much (if not more, in some aspects) of a kid as the other Thieves are. This means that he is still at the age and mental development level where he is still figuring out himself, who he is, what path to follow etc. It also means that he is prone to being overly dramatic, emotionally extreme, and have poor emotional control- you know, teen stuff.

The key to it all becomes his ultimate persona, Hereward. We all know that Akechi has two personas, but he doesn't get two ultimate personas, he gets only one. I think that it's symbolic of his psyche slowly melding itself into one again. It's not that either one of his "sides" was truly fake or real; Both the Detective Prince and Black Mask ARE parts of the "real" Akechi- it's just that he has been systematically compartmentalizing his whole self into two for YEARS. The awakening of his ultimate persona is him starting the process of healing and allowing these two sides of him to mix and reconnect back into one.

I honestly think that, with enough time and the right environment, Akechi's most extreme traits would even themselves out, and he would stop being AS short-tempered, snarky, and blood-thirsty as he is in the game. He will never be the perfectly plesant Detective Prince, but he also won't be the angry, self-loathing and vengeful Black Mask. He will be something new, something different, a fusion of the two opposite ends of his personality spectrum. Only then he will live as his fully true self.

people trying to talk through sobs is so good in whump. have you ever tried to talk while crying? it's not easy. quick, gasping breaths in-between desperate and incoherent stammering because you're sobbing too hard to get the words out. should be used in whump more tbh.

I can't begin to tell you how freeing it is to learn how to use power tools and fix stuff in your own home.

Especially if you grew up like me and it was expected that the men would do this stuff. (Which they will procrastinate and postpone doing indefinitely).

Ever since buying my own place I've been learning to do stuff, and I installed my dishwasher, a shower bidet, assembled a lot of furniture and hung all kinds of shit on my walls and it feels GREAT!

Also, one thing I've learned from observing men doing this stuff is that they don't really know what they're doing either. If you look for a tutorial on YouTube you have just as big of a chance of getting everything right, maybe more. So don't let fear stop you and grab that power drill.

Does does keep anything to remember Lucas and Bella in safe haven?

Yes! Their pull-tabs for their zippers! He has them stuck to his bowler like little charms (glue would probably look nicer, but he would be too anxious about them falling off). They’ve gotten a few questions at Safe Haven, but generally saying “they’re special” is enough for curious toys. A few of the bigger body critters know more, but I’ll save that for another drawing.

He very rarely loses track of his hat, but when it does happen retrieving it becomes priority #1. While definitely concerned about his attachment to the hat, Poppy understands every toy has their quirks. Doey can manage himself out there better than almost any toy in Safe Haven… she couldn’t blame him for holding his cards close to his chest.

“Never want to take the easy way out even if it kills you. Are you addicted to trouble?”

“If you keep yelling at me,” you tell him calmly, belied by enormous eyes with eclipsed pupils, “I’m going to start a fire with my lighter and suck all the air out from this room and then we’ll both die.“

A pause in the conversation from both of you. Feeling suddenly awkward and unfinished, you stick your tongue out at him. “So there.”

Immediately, you regret it. It was an idea meant to be ironic, but perhaps Kaiser read it as post ironic - does it look childish? Anyway, you don’t care what he thinks, you-

He laughs at you outright.

“You’re so dramatic,” he scoffs. “And anyway, you’re proving my point. Killing us both because you got us stuck in the storage closet? Way to say ‘you’re right, Kaiser, I’d rather cause catastrophic damage than admit I’m wrong.’”

“Says you,” you snap back. “There’s no way you, of all people, are going to call me dramatic. And move-“ you punctuate this by shoving him aside. “You’re going to break your shoulder against that door, dumbass. All of you footballers have muscles for brains. Obviously it’s not going to work if it hasn’t worked for the past minute.”

“So what do you suggest,” Kaiser drawls, now leaning back against the wall. His posture is still perfect; his pose suggests haughty grace and elegance. He looks down his nose at you, his eyes narrowed with cunning. “Miss perfect?”

“I-“ You swallow hard. You actually didn’t think this far ahead.

“I mean, you’re the one who got me in this mess.” He’s walking closer. He’s walking closer and this room is literally closet sized and there’s no space for you to back up and-

Kaiser smells so, so good. Like winter air and freezing waters. More of an illustrated impression than a combination of particular notes, it reminds you of the family vacation you took to Alaska years ago. You were a child and you’d wandered outside. Everyone thought you were going to die - your mother cried when you were found - but you don’t remember that.

You remember sitting on a snowbank with your head craned back, watching the aurora borealis dance above you. The landscape was only beautiful because it was so severe, the wind whipping heat into your cheeks, the snow melting in your eyelashes.

Kaiser smells like that memory, like finding comfort in the ice.

He has you pressed up against the wall now. His scent surrounds you. You’re so close that you can imagine the heat of his body through his jersey; your front feels warmer than your back, pressed against the cold steel of the closet.

You can’t look up. Can’t meet him in the eyes. There’s a horrifying thrill in you, some kind of instinct telling you something terrible will happen. You’ll turn to stone or he’ll ensorcel you or -

“Hey.” His fingers slip under your chin and force your gaze to his. “Pay attention to me. No way I’m going to let you lock me in a closet and ignore me.”

“I know,” he smiles like it’s just dawned on him. You know damn well it hasn’t. “Why don’t you make it up to me, hm?”

I will never be over Leo’s 4D chess play in “Many Unhappy Returns”. Like, just in general it is a spectacle to see this character who we’ve seen goofing around time and time again, who’s only sometimes decided to take things seriously, only to show him making a maneuver like that.

And here’s what gets me the most about his plan against Big Mama: he comes up with it on the spot. The second he sees that Big Mama has the solution they need, he’s already in game mode.

It is so satisfying watching the episode back when you realize his plan, because he literally sets the stage entirely for a decisive victory. He sees that the champion is a kraken, and comes up with both the solution to defeating it and a reasonable excuse to get that solution into the battle with them on the fly:

“Like your champ aaand those six guys. In fact, we don’t want this over too quickly. You should armor up those rookies. The whole shebang. Especially with these pointy helmets.”

And this is why giving him teleportation powers is perfect, too. He analyzes the battlefield and makes use of all the assets, moving pieces around to guarantee a win. It is honestly so impressive to witness and one of my favorite parts of his character.

Beelzebub is acting really freaking weird in this scene.

Ok so I encourage you to rewatch it cause I can't really properly illustrate it in gifs, but they don't sound irritated, or even particularly intimidating. We know Beezlebub to be a very dry person, even in moments they want something and need to manipulate/ convince someone for it. So this abnormally animated and even somewhat friendly demeanor doesn't strike me as part of buttering Crowley up to get him to help them.

This is a weird line. We know Beelzebub isn't like Shax, they've been around a bit more and have a better grasp on things like tone and figurative language. There's almost no way they're unaware that saying this would immediately clue Crowley in to the fact that Heaven and Hell do in fact have communication, so they must want him to know. For whatever reason, it's important to them that Crowley knows they're a reputable source.

And then I remembered where I've heard that tone before.

It's nearly the exact same one Crowley uses to tell Aziraphale that he needs to protect them. It's the kind of tone you use when you need someone to read between the lines and understand more than you can safely tell them. Beelzebub is fully ready to believe Shax when they say Gabriel's in the bookshop, and acknowledge later that Aziraphale was a very fitting and likely candidate to harbor him. They know full well Crowley doesn't want jack shit to do with Hell, and would probably be offended if anything by anyone referring to his "nasty little heart". That is merely a performance to mask what they're really trying to tell him, which is that Aziraphale is in danger.

Without this detail Crowley very well could've turned Gabriel in to Heaven instead of Hell, he certainly doesn't see much difference between the two. Beelzebub is the reason he decisively doesn't, and races home in a panic.

And I think it's genuinely so sweet, this moment of understanding and comradery between them that goes unnoticed, even to Crowley. They drop the shtick and make sure that he knows the book of life is a real threat, and you only need to be merely involved in hiding him to be erased from it. Because to them, there's also the very real possibility that Crowley knows about Gabriel while Aziraphale doesn't, so they're double checking Crowley will not to tell him and instead go straight to them. There’s just something so protective in it.
