it is only complex bc abuse is always done with purposeful intent. that is the textbook definition. who accidentally abuses someone? you don’t have to label his emotional incompetence as abuse. cause it’s not. that makes no sense… cause his character isn’t one dimensional. it’s literally just a character flaw, even if it hurts someone’s feelings. just like how jason is a hypocrite and dick practices escapism instead of dealing with his problems. majority of the times when he’s fighting another bat or bird, it’s either mutual or out of his control, so yeah ima give him grace by ignoring highly ooc comic runs. cause no one’s character is consistent, especially if you’re the freaking batman. idk, speaking generally when u literally get to build-a-bruce wayne is mainly just a skill issue, so maybe u just want him to be abusive?

Anon, abuse can absolutely be unintentional. You can unintentionally hurt people like that. Abusers don't always look at the people they abuse and think "I'm hurting and abusing them"- a lot of the time they really aren't aware they're being abusive and even think they're being helpful. I'm not saying some abusers go "whoopsie daisy!" And slip up like how you'd accidentally drop a vase. I'm saying the abuse Bruce puts the batkids through, especially Dick, is something he's doing not knowing he's being abusive or neglectful.

As an abuse victim, yes this is possible. My dad is abusive, but he isn't at all aware of it. Does he still love me to absolute bits? Of course. I don't doubt that he loves and cares for me. Is he still abusive? Absolutely. This is the case for Bruce.

His emotional incompetence is absolutely a character flaw, but how he goes about it with his kids is harmful. Take this example:

This is just after Dick was nearly beaten to death by Two-Face. Bruce is genuinely afraid here, he's blaming himself for what happened to Dick and thinks that firing Dick will keep him safe. But he communicates absolutely none of this to Dick; he just yells at him, fires him, and then gives him the cold shoulder for months. Dick feels like such a failure that he runs away, thinking that Bruce doesn't want him around anymore. And i don't think this is ever really rectified or resolved. Dick becomes Robin again, but Bruce insists that he follow orders like a "good soldier".

And this incident still weighs heavy on Dick years later, thinking of it as his failure, especially since the whole situation was so traumatizing.

And this is just one example of Bruce being emotionally incompetent and hurting Dick in the process. There's also the entirety of Batman #416, Batman #408, and NTT #55, all separate incidents where Bruce is unable to communicate and hurts Dick in the process. This is very present throughout their entire relationship, and there's far, far more examples of Bruce's emotional immaturity/incompetence being harmful, not just to Dick, but to the rest of the batkids as well (I believe it's one of the reasons Jason ran off to find his birth mother).

Bruce pretty much never communicates, not even to offer praise. This is something that frequently comes up and is even joked about (Dick being weirded out in Batman: Under the Red Hood when Bruce thanks him), but is a strong point of insecurity for the Robins. In fact, Dick wasn't even sure what Bruce really thought of him, if he thought about Dick at all (Gotham Knights #14). Jason also doesn't believe Bruce loves him, thanks to the sheer differences in communication styles and beliefs (which, honestly, the tragedy of that warrants it's own post), and I believe Damian has stated that, if it made Bruce happy, he'd stop existing (I'm not sure what comic it's from, so take this with a grain of salt). I'm not sure about Tim, honestly, since I haven't read his comics, but I wouldn't be surprised if the pattern continued with him too.

And ALL of this stems from Bruce being emotionally neglectful. A lot of issues in the batclan comes from this, honestly. Neglect is, by definition, abuse, even if it's just emotional neglect. This is often paired with Bruce miscommunicating if not outright being verbally abusive (such as yelling at Dick, as seen above), or even physically abusive (Nightwing #30, NTT #55, and at least half a dozen other instances with Dick alone).

Speaking of, I also don't believe Bruce being physically abusive is actually OOC, mostly because it's a trait that's been present since the Golden Ages, and Bruce is the one who decided beating up criminals was a good alternative to therapy. Bruce in general has a lot of anger issues, and is a pretty violent person. This is nothing new, and if you don't count the Golden Ages as canon, it's been at least present since the 80s. It's been consistent over a long period of time, and because of that, i really don't see Bruce being physically abusive as OOC, except for in certain cases (such as RHATO #25 and Gotham War, both incidents that I don't believe are in character when it comes to Bruce's opinions on Jason killing based on previous comics).

I don't really "want" Bruce to be abusive. I think it'd be better if he wasn't, but at this point, the batkids' characters hinge on him being abusive or at the very least neglectful, otherwise, aspects of their characters don't particularly make sense. Also, all of this is stuff I've picked up on as I slowly get through comics and read more meta posts. I'm not the kind of person who makes things up, and if I'm proven wrong about something, I typically reevaluate my thoughts, step back, and admit that I'm wrong. And so far, I really haven't seen any real evidence towards the "Bruce isn't abusive" column beyond people saying "these comics are out of character"- which is subjective.

Also, I only don't like it when people say that he's not abusive and then list things that are abusive. Mostly because it's genuinely dangerous.

Also also, I'm not saying Bruce is irredeemable or an awful person. He certainly isn't great, but he's absolutely capable of change and he loves his kids to death. There's almost nothing he wouldn't do for them (except kill, obviously, which is honestly something I agree with him on). I think he's stubborn and hot-headed, but once he actually sees the harm he's caused, I think he's fully willing to change, even if it's hard for him. Bruce is far from heartless. He cares a lot! He's just fucked up and has a ton of unresolved trauma that messed up his parenting. I really can't state how much I believe Bruce cares for and loves his family.

Anyways, at the end of the day, I believe Bruce is abusive. Abuse has a lot of nuance to it, and to a lot of people, abuse is always done intentionally and knowing that what they're doing causes harm. But this isn't always the case. Bruce is, imo, a really good depiction of an abuser who genuinely loves his kids and thinks he's doing right by them. And I honestly prefer his character this way; Bruce is WAY more interesting to me if he's fucked up like this.

Sorry this took a minute to answer, I have a lot of thoughts on this topic.

Felix wasn't sure what he expected. There was never going to be a quiet, private moment where his family met Robin and gushed over their return. It just wasn't their way. Still. The level of pageantry it was clear his mother was gearing up for in the court was a lot to spring on someone from outside. He got it, a big dramatic story of a wayward prince and the romantic ending, they needed to sell it to the citizens. It needed to be flashy, and that level of required preparation. But she could've given them a day at least.

The court's external buildings circled a large amphitheatre cut into the stone, which was full of life as people ran about, following the demands of a tall, elegant woman with curved horns dripping in silver and jewels, and a long fur coat that trailed behind her.

Far away, against the walls, Felix let out a long sigh. "I suspect that we're in for a long night, butterfly." He placed a hand against Robin's back, "If you want to rest at all, we should try not to draw attention." If someone saw them it would be over in a crowd of excitement, and they'd never get a moment alone to just settle in. "We should get you warmed up and alone first, before you're pulled into the spotlight, cause, sweetheart, we are not getting any peace for a week."

Ok hear me out the grammys r today & I am a swiftie

(PSA not Nancy Wheeler friendly & Billy Hargrove pops in like a jump scare but he's somehow better than Nancy??)

O!Steve loves his career, he gets to make music with his favorite producer & best friend ever B!Robin Buckley, he gets to tour his music around the world, his fans made it possible for him to pivot his career, & now he is free from the overbearing thumb of his previous record label. He's on top of the world, prepping to embark on his most ambitious & physically demanding tour of his career with a partner working on her own growing career in journalism

Then, Jonathan Byers messages him. He's a beta who works w A!Nancy Wheeler at her news network job where she's rising in the ranks as an investigative reporter. He confesses to Steve with evidence tht Nancy has been cheating on Steve w Jonathan for going on 3 months. Jonathan is ending things w Nancy & he felt Steve should know what Nancy has done & Jonathan emphasizes he feels terrible. Steve doesn't blame Jonathan necessarily, Steve is more upset w Nancy. So Steve breaks things off, gets professional movers to take all of her things out of his various apartments & homes & mail them all to her New York address all at once, gets her to give back every key she has, and Nancy doesn't even have the decency to pretend at remorse for how she's shattered him, just sneers & makes a remark abt him writing a song abt her as if the 5 years they were together meant nothing

Steve rebounds HARD

His begins his tour & decides to indulge in a relationship w blue eyed bad boy British actor Billy Hargrove, he's crass & abrasive & it ends like a car crash behind the closed doors of Steve's beloved Nashville apartment, but at least Billy parts w a statement tht shows the asshole is even more understanding than Nancy abt how Steve will write a song or 2 abt this

The show must go on & it does. It's during a break btwn cities tht his little step-brother Dustin sends him the link to a clip of a podcast

It's a group of 4 friends, two of them alphas, 1 a beta & 1 an omega man. 2 of them are involved in professional hockey. The podcast involves them playing d&d but they also chat for abt an hour at the start of every episode. The alpha Eddie Munson plays as star goalie of The Detroit Red Wings (a team his grandpa Otis cheers for) & the beta Felix calls plays from the box. While A!Jeff & O!Gareth both have lucrative careers in computer science & robotics. Gareth works w NASA & the Mars Rovers, no wonder Dustin likes the podcast his twerp of a brother is coworkers w Gareth

This particular clip is from the first hour of a recent episode & is abt how Eddie has been a not at all secret fan of Steve since his debut & how he got to see the tour when it stopped in Detroit & how it was the best show Eddie's ever seen. Eddie confesses he was a little sad to learn Steve isn't meeting anyone backstage during this tour as he puts himself on vocal rest as often as possible to maintain the ability to sing for 3 hours straight, because Eddie had a friendship bracelet he made with his number on it & he happily implies it was his phone number & the alpha graciously responds to the teasing abt having a long time celebrity crush on Steve

Steve is charmed

He only needs to send 2 messages to Dustin before he's sending a text to Eddie's personal number. They hit it off, they're both goofy in the same ways, Eddie is theatrical in a different but complimentary way, soon they're meeting up privately btwn stops on his tour & Eddie's prep for hockey season & then Steve is very publicly at a Red Wings game & soon after Eddie is in the very visible VIP tent at the New York show trading his own handmade bracelets w fans

& Steve ends the night w a lyric change he only told Robin about bc she's 50% of his impulse control just like he's 50% of her impulse control & they secretly recorded a remix of the encore song because they liked it so much. The lyric tht used to reference Nancy with "karma is the girl on the screen" is changed to "karma is the guy on the wings" which makes the crowd explode with noise

When the show is done Steve knows fans r waiting to see him exit the stadium waving one last goodbye for the night & he knows they see Eddie clearly waiting for Steve & tht they're all recording so he does something he's never done for a beau: he runs ahead of his security right into Eddie's arms & is swept into a kiss tht makes him feel like they're the only ppl in the world

The multiple videos from multiple angles go viral within minutes of posting & the internet descends into madness when the remix is dropped w the lyric change just 3 hours later, but Steve & Eddie r too busy cuddling in Steves nest in his NYC penthouse the both of them laughing at the ketchup blood in a bad slasher movie to care abt tht

biting both of them from happiness🥰

(this one has been sitting in the drafts for a while. It's a bit of a crack theory, but since tomorrow is the new Cassette Beast announcement and it looks like Sunny is gonna be involved, I wanted to put this out there. Juuuuuust on the off chance I'm on to something.)

(spoilers: Eugene's quest, Kayleigh's quest, Felix's quest, postgame stuff, Pier of the Unknown DLC)

The ingame bio for Mammon states, "Its Landkeepers are hollow vessels, shells given autonomy from its vast well of power." But where did those vessels come from? And we know they aren't completely hollow, given that Sunny was able to find a new life outside of her Archangel overlord. Consider one of the three possibilities:

1: Mammon created the Landkeepers. Mammon is the archangel of capitalism, and if (IF) he had the ability to create an army of mindlessly devoted followers, he would. However, in Pier of the Unknown, Gwen seems to imply that Archangels are incapable of true creation like humans are. Maybe she was just talking about herself, (Archangel of Illusion, unable to make anything that lasts), but that revelation ties into her fascination with humans. The other "creations" we've seen of archangels are either temporary entities as well (like the Nowhere Peasants), or are stated to be converted matter (Poppetox's effigies). But making tangible, independent beings is probably outside of the wheelhouse of most Archangels. I know Morgante and Aleph may have "created" Mordread, but that's a whole other can of worms I'm not getting into that here. Let's just leave it at "Archangels might be capable of creation but I have other ideas."

2: The Landkeepers were ordinary humans who got corrupted by Mammon. Through Gwen, we've seen the extent to which humans can be corrupted by Archangels. Not pretty. One could say the Landkeepers got off easy by comparison. It is a bit weird though when you compare Mammon's actions to Mourningstar's. Mourningstar is supposedly the Archangel of devotion. If anyone was going to corrupt humans to the point that they can hardly function without their leader's influence, you'd think it'd be the Serpent God. However, we see Mourningtown swing back pretty quickly from the loss of their god. None of them become listless zombies like Sunny. While Vin remains loyal to Mourningstar long after he's gone, he snaps out of it pretty seamlessly once things are cleared up. The mechanics of corruption are pretty unclear, and perhaps a matter of personal preference to each individual Archangel. (It's possible that Mourningstar sees more value in freely given worship, while Mammon is all about results).

The other thing is, Mammon is not the Archangel of the Landkeepers: he's the Archangel of capitalism, which could take many forms. Medical insurance, mass production, environmental exploitation… why the focus on property acquisition?

3: The New Wirral Landkeepers were born from Eugene's imagination, and Mammon adopted them. Eugene has a lot of hatred towards the Landkeepers of his own world, but I think it unlikely that he's ever actually met one. Those Landkeepers Eugene knew from history books, and accounts of revolutionaries who survived the mid-century upheaval. When your only perspective of a person is through the heartless organization they served, you're going to have a flat image of them. A caricature, one could say.

Oh hey, isn't New Wirral a place where one can meet fictional characters? Like Kuneko, Viola, and Robin Goodfellow?

This, to me, is Eugene's monkey paw wish come true. He grew up after all or most of the action was over. He dreams of being a big hero, but a hero needs villains to fight. So when he goes to New Wirral and just so happens to meet the very boogeymen that he so badly wants to punch? Yeah, I don't think that's a coincidence.

Plus, imagine how much of a slap in the face that would be, finding out that your greatest enemies exist only because you made them? Imagine finding out that YOU were born just to feed some guys ego? Fucking ouch, I love it!
