Don't let their looks fool you, they are actually good parents. (Maybe "okay" parents, they did let Liv run away with her boyfriend they never met and his band at 15. (But she was responsible and called them to explain her decision and that she already talked with the school and will be taking special exams at the end of every semester, so it's all good lmao.))

In my AU the Techno/Rock Trolls are the largest population of mixed trolls. They live concentrated along the shore between the Rock and Techno Kingdoms and also extending north into the no-man's-land on the map. This whole area is simply referred to as "the Shallows". They have their own communities and villages there which are located partially on land or exposed reefs/rocks and partially in the water.

Liv grew up in one of those villages. Her parents own a small apartment carved into a cliff side above the ocean. Personally they prefer walking over floating/swimming, and they can't stay in the sun for too long either (they all inherited sun sensitive skin from their Techno sides) so this way they're mostly on land and also aren't in direct sunlight after noon.

It's a modest home but I imagine they must have the prettiest sunrises.

Despite the Shallows having their own communities they still belong under the Rock Kingdom which doesn't really care about them or their different needs much, so a lot of the trolls living there are very anti authority.

Captain Flint — Born from the Sea

I love the idea of Flint having a connection to the sea, almost like it’s a part of him. I love that it runs so deep that people around him come to believe that he must have some sort of mystical power over it. His whole identity, both as McGraw and Flint is rooted in it, and he both loves it, understands how to tame it, and yet dreams of one day walking away from it. I love that James McGraw is simply an incredibly competent, skilled and cunning sailor and tactician, and yet Captain Flint is somehow larger than life, a creature born from story, born from the sea and come to life through rage and grit and determination. He’s both just a man, and more than that.

I'm reading Treasure Island and god the parallels between Jim and Silver's dynamic and Silver and Flint's dynamic 🥲

Jim in TI and Silver in BS are both thrown into this adventure because they stole a piece of paper that they didn't understand the meaning of and then are essentially held hostage by the crew until they charm the captain

Jim convinces Silver that they would be better as allies than enemies by explaining how he outsmarted him and Silver immediately respects him more because of it, like how Silver told Flint about the urca gold in BS

Silver straight up tells Jim that he reminds him of "my own self when I was young and handsome." he has such a soft spot for him and sides with Jim over the rest of the crew, in much the same way as Flint treats Silver

Why this is so funny

we as viewers all have our favorite Flint Relationship based off of which one resonates with us the most personally. but from a character standpoint i don't think flint loved thomas, miranda or silver More over the others.

thomas was his self-actualization in terms of both sexuality and his own idealism. he became whole as both a gay man (or bi, depending on your read) and as someone who truly believes the world can be changed for the better despite the cynicism he had grown up with. his rage over the loss of this relationship is partly over thomas the person but more deeply over the loss of that self-actualization. he became himself in that relationship (toby stephens' words), and then civilization brutally killed it. that's the starting point of rage against the world.

silver was also a self-actualization in different sense, as captain flint. he became whole with silver, as both captain flint and reconciling with his past. but captain flint is made of violence and rage just as much as he's made of idealism, which is why his relationship with silver is so bonkers and insane and out of control. it's just as intense and meaningful, but the roller coaster dysfunction has to do with who he is now (and also who silver is) rather than who he was back then. doesn't make his love for silver any less impactful than his love for thomas however.

miranda was the catalyst for both of these self-actualizations. she kickstarted james mcgraw's "idgaf about society" belief and essentially kicked him towards the relationship with thomas. she also kickstarted flint. flint started as an amalgamation of both miranda and james mcgraw's rage, she gave birth to it and nurtured it. neither the self-actualization with thomas or silver could have happened without her. his relationship with miranda was just as impactful to flint as the other two, the other two literally would not have occurred without her.

so no, i don't think he loved any of them The Most. they were equally important. they just served different functions.

Happy Pride Month! To celebrate, have some pride headcanons + a fair few canon canons for the Investigation Institute ^^ Nine characters. So many colors. So many references. I gave up on shading because that would’ve taken even LONGER. I did not eat while I was drawing this, I was so FOCUSED.

Hope it was worth it! If it wasn’t, uh. I drew my Institute designs for the first time, that was pretty cool ^^ (And if you don’t recognize some of the flags—I gotcha covered. Starts from center, then we go clockwise starting from the top!)
