Oil Drilling Rig Noise Control Solution with Melamine Foam
Noise, air pollution and water pollution are the three major public hazards in the world today and are by-products of industrial society. Oil drilling rigs have made huge contributions to our energy exploration and extraction, but they have also caused damage to the surrounding environment. The well site is near a residential area, causing inconvenience to residents' daily lives. At the same time, the huge noise caused by the well site being in the wilderness has caused great damage to the ecological environment. When you are in the operating environment of a drilling rig site, you will be deeply aware of the harm of noise. Therefore, we propose methods to control the noise of oil drilling rigs.
Although the operating noise of oil drilling rigs cannot be eliminated, it can be effectively controlled. When the drilling rig is operating, the engine is the main source of noise, and its main noise location is exhaust noise. Exhaust noise is the most energetic and main engine noise source in the engine, and its noise is often 10dB-15dB higher than the overall engine noise. Exhaust noise includes: fundamental frequency and high-order harmonic noise, exhaust pipe resonance, vortex noise on the back of the valve stem, surface-evading residual flow noise in the exhaust pipe, and exhaust gas injection impact.
Noise control measures for diesel generator sets of oil drilling rigs:
1. Sound-absorbing materials
Sound-absorbing materials can effectively control the noise of petroleum equipment, and melamine foam is the most used sound-absorbing material. Since its excellent sound absorption properties, flame retardant properties, thermal conductivity properties, extensive weather resistance, etc., it is very suitable for noise control of diesel generator sets of oil drilling rigs.
Excellent properties of melamine foam acoustic materials by SINOYQX:
Excellent sound absorption performance (0.95NRC);
Permanent flame retardancy ((UL94 V-0, HF-1, B1 grade);
Excellent thermal insulation (thermal conductivity, 0.035 W/ (m*K));
Light weight (8.5KG/cubic, reaching the design target performance, 1/3 of the weight of traditional glass wool and other materials);
Extensive weather resistance (minus 180 degrees Celsius to 200 degrees Celsius, up to 240 degrees Celsius, maintaining stable physical and chemical properties);
Environmentally friendly (does not contain any halogenated hydrocarbons, flame retardants and/or toxic heavy metals; does not produce toxic or harmful gases when burned in a flame);
Environmental stability (acid resistance, alkali resistance, antibacterial, mildew resistance);
Secondary processing formability (can provide various shapes, sizes and thicknesses, easy cutting, specially developed outer metal frame, easy and convenient processing, and installation).
2. Sound barrier
Rigid barriers with large amounts of mass and stiffness reduce the propagation of sound energy. Examples include steel panels typically used for enclosures and sand-filled block walls or poured concrete walls for indoor locations. Enclosures are becoming lighter as a cost-saving measure, so it is sometimes necessary to install stiffeners when the steel enclosure walls lack sufficient stiffness. The casing can also be covered with a padded rubber pad, which adds mass and is very effective at preventing the transmission of low-frequency sounds.
3. Overall soundproof shed
The overall soundproof shed is composed of detachable soundproof wall panels, roof panels, cooling fans and noise-reducing fire mufflers. When the system is installed, the perimeter and top of the entire computer room are enclosed with sound insulation panels to form a complete whole. A removable exhaust muffler is installed on one side of the diesel engine radiator, and a 55KW fan is installed in front of the diesel engine radiator to conduct the heat emitted by the radiator out of the noise reduction room. The original diesel engine muffler was replaced with a noise-reducing fire-proof muffler to improve the exhaust noise reduction effect. The overall noise reduction effect of the soundproof shed is good. The disadvantages are that the installation workload is large, the installation time is long, the energy consumption is high, and the output power of the diesel engine is reduced.
In general, the above are common oil drilling rig noise control measures. In addition to paying attention to noise reduction in petroleum equipment, companies should also pay attention to employees' personal hearing protection. Drilling employees must take effective personal protection measures when they are exposed to workplaces where the noise intensity is an 8-hour equivalent sound level >85dB(A). Hearing protection equipment includes earplugs and earmuffs. Enterprises should provide effective and practical hearing protection equipment. After employees wear hearing protection equipment, the actual 8-hour equivalent sound level they endure should be kept below 85dB(A), and the most accurate noise reduction effect is between 70dB(A) and 80dB(A). If exposure to noise levels reaches or exceeds an 8-hour equivalent sound level of 100dB(A), consider using double hearing protection.

How to reduce decibels and direct sound to silent your Diesel generator
Making your Diesel generator silent is pretty easy. There are three things that one should have a basic idea of to lessen noise pollution.
1. The parts of the engine of the generator that causes high dB levels.
2. Generator and engine cooling
3. How to direct and suppress sound
It has just been in the past 15 years hat engineers have found ways to move sound and air to transform standard high noise diesel generations into the serene machines that are becoming more common today. I was involved in the generator rental business for almost two decades. Not all our equipments are sound attenuated by using a sound attentuator, so we have frequently worked with our customers to dampen sound.

Where is the noise coming from?
A commonly held notion about generator noise is that by putting on a big muffler, the sound will be deadened enough just like the usage of a generator sound enclosure. A good muffler undeniably assists, but the person that depends on this as a solution will be disappointed. Some of the sound is created due to the rattle of the components of the diesel engine, but a huge part is the fan noise. How to make the Generator silent
âą While getting an air compressor cover, it is important that sufficient space is allowed for air flow into and out of the fans of both the generator and the engine.
Keep in mind, sound travels in a straight line but not completely. Â Remember when you are speaking, the person facing you hears your voice in the most intense way, but to a lesser extent, those that are beside you or behind you can still hear what you say. Sadly, as sound dispels in every direction, only one sound blocking wall or noise reduction fence might not be sufficient. Stay assured, by following the above mentioned steps, the complaints about sound pollution from your generator will lessen to a considerable extent.

the generative noise reduction artifact experiments that people call "AI Art" were not initially a collage machine, but grew closer to one over time as demands for accuracy and beautiful convincing results without any extra interactions were heeded. overfitting has gotten easier to do accidentally as models have focused more on using smaller datasets efficiently after running into the ceiling of "oops, that's all the data on earth." of course it still can't point you towards the parts of its training data that it "used" because all of it is already in the bread, its just a shit image search now.

"Dear EarthTalk: What is wind repowering and why are environmentalists so bullish on it?
âH. King, Mesa, AZ
One of the most common forms of clean energy is wind power. People from around the world could recognize a wind farm from just one look. While wind power has been a staple in renewable energy since the ideaâs inception, many of the original and old wind turbines have begun to show signs of aging. Wind repowering aims to fix this, by revamping old turbines with more efficient components, or putting in new, state-of-the-art turbines as a whole. These new components and units can reduce noise, more efficiently power a turbine, and a deliver a higher overall energy output.
Denmark, an early adopter of wind repowering, saw a 1.3 GW gain in capacity and a reduction of 109 wind turbines, enabling substantially increased wind energy production with fewer turbines. This promising data prompted a surge in wind repowering projects, and in 2019, 86 percent of wind energy projects there were classified as ârepowered.â
These signs of success and scalability showed other countries the benefits of wind repowering. The U.S, with help from large energy corporations like General Electric, has more than 40 active wind repowering sites, with over 2,500 turbines having some type of renovation. This hefty wind repowering advancement is responsible for four gigawatts of energy, or the power for more than 30 million homes.
Itâs no secret how fast wind repowering is growing, but upgrades can be made to many different types of renewable energy. Why do eco-advocates support wind repowering so strongly? Wind repowering has energy, financial, aesthetic and technological benefits. Not only does it make units more efficient, it also removes units that might be aesthetically unpleasing, or in less efficient spots than they could be. Wind repowering also increases the lifespan of turbines by as much as 20 years, and reduces the need for maintenance. Repowered turbines are also quieter, sleeker, and produce considerably more energy.
So, while there are many types of repowering efforts for other renewable energy sources, none are as comprehensive or successful as wind repowering. Not only is it a comprehensive option for revamping clean energy, but it does not require the entry costs that just building new wind farms requires.
The only barrier to wind repowering at the moment is legislation. Bills and policies cannot keep up with the demand for it. Readers should call local officials, or urge any nearby wind farms to look at wind repowering. Spreading awareness is the first and most important step."

The thing that confuses me about the "don't vote" left (not the "I don't want to vote", I'm talking explicitly the "don't vote" left. I don't agree with the "I don't want to vote" left either but I can understand their logic) is they lose me at the final step of the logic. I've tried to connect the logic here, even if I don't agree with a political position I do try to understand where people are coming from (empathy for someones situation is not the same as cosigning it), but I just can't connect the dots here in a way that isn't deeply cruel. Does United States politics prioritize the lives of those in the US (and often white) over those in the Global South? Yes, it's a fucking atrocity. We should continue to make noise about it, cus Biden has used less drones and that shows progress, even if it's not enough. The part where I lose the plot is where the conclusion to this injustice is to let even more people die? Cus that's kinda how I see the idea of not voting: I can pick between shit and more shit, and at the end of the day, I'm picking whoever allows the most people to make it to the next day. Given Trumps stance on everything but specifically climate change, I feel like Biden is pretty significant harm reduction.
I don't think both things can't be true: that every life lost is a travesty we should not forget AND the more people we can save is worth fighting for.
The thing is, I have seen nothing among the "don't vote" far left (and I am talking here specifically about the people who both loudly announce their intention not to vote and try to convince others to do the same) to convince me that they actually care about harm reduction or stopping genocide. They only care about what makes them look the most Correct and/or superior to the Democrats. They yelled bloody murder about Obama using drones, they went dead quiet about Trump using them even more (even when he nearly started WWIII by assassinating the Iranian general Soleimani with one), and then said nothing at all when Biden reduced the drone program to almost nothing and withdrew the US from a failed war in Afghanistan it had long ago lost. Now they will yell all day about Israel/Hamas (something that Biden did not start and has had no direct military role in responding to) but they don't care about Russian genocide of Ukraine and Syria, Chinese threats to invade Taiwan, etc, because those governments are "anti-western/anti-American" and therefore should be defended. Their opposition to human suffering is extremely conditional and rests on whether they can look good out of it, and they never interrogate the hypocrisies of their own ideology.
Likewise: every country in the world prizes its own citizens above those of other countries. It's just a basic fact. Yes, the US has a grim history of intervening in other countries and causing untold civilian damage (especially during the Cold War and then in post-9/11 War on Terrorism). Yes, that legacy is complex and needs to be acknowledged. But literally none of that will be fixed, not to mention all the vulnerable people in America itself who will be punished, by Trump getting into power again. Biden is not just a grudging "lesser evil," but has done a lot of truly good and helpful things, regardless of the Online Leftists' constant lies, misinformation, and misrepresentation. If you spend all your time announcing what a champion you are for non-American marginalised people and/or those undergoing terrible suffering, and then deliberately and knowingly adhere to a course of action that will increase that suffering tenfold not only for those people but your own neighbors, friends, and family, then no, I don't believe you are a brave champion of social justice. You just want to know what categories of people you can gleefully and righteously punish and make to suffer for not believing the same things as you, that makes you just as dangerous as the right-wing fascists, and I can and will call out your ass accordingly.

Noise Reduction Treatment in Drilling Rig Diesel Engine Room
The power system of oil drilling rigs mainly comes from diesel engines. The power of diesel engines is relatively large, generally around 800KW. A set of 5000M drilling rig generally requires 3 diesel engines and a set of 7000M drilling rig generally requires 4 diesel engines. Diesel engines will produce noise when they are working, especially diesel engines used in drilling rigs. Due to their high power and mutual influence, the noise is particularly prominent. The sound of a diesel engine can be heard even in the wild and at great distances.
1. Analysis of noise sources of diesel generator sets
1.1 Aerodynamic noise
During the operation of the diesel unit, the disturbance to the air causes a sound source between the air and the diesel unit to form noise. This kind of noise directly radiates to the outside, specifically including: the noise of the exhaust system, the noise of the air intake system, and the rotation noise of the diesel engine cooling fan.
(1) Exhaust system noise. The most direct noise source of diesel generator sets is the noise generated by the exhaust system. This noise is relatively high in intensity and is about 10~15dB (A) higher than normal engine noise. During the operation of the generator set, high-temperature and high-pressure exhaust gas must be continuously discharged. According to the operating status of the generator set, the exhaust system has two stages of exhaust, namely free exhaust of the generator set and forced exhaust of the generator set. When the exhaust gas from the generator set is discharged from the exhaust valve, it will flow from the exhaust pipe to the muffler, and finally be discharged into the air through the rear exhaust pipe. During the entire exhaust process, a large amount of exhaust noise will be generated, which is also the main source of noise from diesel generator sets. The noise generated during the exhaust process was analyzed and it was found that the composition of the noise source was relatively complex. There are noises caused by the frequency of exhaust operations in the exhaust system per unit time, noise caused by the resonance of exhaust gases in the exhaust pipe, and blowing noise caused by the airflow ejected from the exhaust pipe. The main factors that can affect the noise of the exhaust system of the generator set are: the internal pressure of the engine cylinder, the pipe diameter of the exhaust system, the rated exhaust volume of the generator set, the operating speed and workload of the generator set, etc. Increasing the working load of the generator set or increasing the engine speed will increase the gas flow, resulting in an increase in exhaust noise.
(2) Noise from the air intake system. The noise generated by the air intake system is one of the main noises of the diesel generator set. The main reason for the formation is that the air inlet is continuously opened and closed according to the air intake demand of the generator set, which causes the pressure of the air intake system to continuously change and cause noise. When the intake system is working, a certain pressure pulse is formed in the intake pipe, causing the intake system to produce periodic noise. The audio frequency range of this noise is generally around 200Hz. At the same time, when the air flow enters the inside of the system, it will flow through the air intake pipe, causing the air to be kicked out of the body. This situation will cause high-frequency noise in the engine air intake system. Usually the air flow in the intake pipe is constantly changing, so the frequency band of this noise is also relatively fixed, generally concentrated around 1000Hz. When the noise frequency of the intake cycle and the air column in the intake system reaches consistency, airflow resonance will occur, causing the noise of the intake system to increase. The noise generated by different superchargers in different generator sets is also different. The noise intensity of a turbocharged generator set is obviously different compared to a non-turbocharged generator set. This is due to the relatively high speed of the turbocharged generator set, which causes the engine's air intake system to produce relatively strong airflow due to air cutting, resulting in higher-frequency noise. The frequency distribution range of this noise is generally between 500 and 10000Hz.
1.2 Surface radiated noise
Strictly speaking, it is difficult to distinguish the surface radiation noise of diesel generator sets. Combustion noise is generally caused by the pressure vibration generated by diesel combustion inside the cylinder acting on the mechanical components of the overall cylinder, thereby radiating a certain amount of noise to the outside. During the operation of the generator set, various mechanical components will continue to collide mechanically, thus generating mechanical noise. Usually, when the generator set speed is low, the combustion noise generated is higher than the mechanical noise.
2. Specific construction measures for noise reduction in diesel generator rooms
Use high-efficiency shock-absorbing rubber pads to isolate the unit. This part of the technology is now very mature. After isolation treatment, the vibration on the surface of the unit is effectively isolated.
(2) Perform noise reduction processing on the propagation channel, and install soft damping connections on the exhaust pipe of the generator set to reduce the external radiation of the sound source. According to the principle of muffling, the muffler structure can use a resistive muffler. It uses porous sound-absorbing material - melamine foam, which is arranged in a certain way in the pipe. When the airflow passes through the resistive muffler, the sound waves cause vibrations in the air and small fibers in the pores of the melamine foam. Due to friction and viscous resistance, sound energy is converted into heat energy and absorbed, thus playing a silencing effect.
(3) Each wall of the room is made of multiple layers of noise-reducing materials, including rock wool, sound-absorbing mesh cloth and sound-absorbing mesh board. Adding a sound-absorbing wall to the wall of the generator room inside the machine room can not only reduce the reverberation sound in the machine room while improving the sound insulation effect, but also attenuate the direct transmission of strong noise when it is running to the top.
(4) When designing the air inlet and outlet, the minimum air inlet and outlet volume standards required for normal operation of the unit are fully considered. At the same time, in order to solve the heat dissipation problem in the machine room, the air inlet and the exhaust outlet of the generator set should be set on the same straight line. In addition, the air intake and exhaust openings should be equipped with resistive sheet sound absorbing grilles.
3.Conclusion
The noise from the diesel generator set of oil drilling rigs is the largest noise source at the entire drilling rig site. It has a great impact on environmental protection and does not meet the requirements of the safety and environmental management system (HSE), so it needs to be prevented. This article conducts research on the noise generated by diesel generator sets, and provides specific construction measures for noise reduction in the generator set room, which can provide reference for relevant personnel.

quick & easy lightroom walkthrough or: shooting through dirty double-paned glass, and other hardships.

I'll tell you! (Original post here.)
â± KIT Panasonic GH5 + LEICA DG 100-400 with rubber hood for shooting through windows.* â± SHUTTER 1/125 sec â± APERTURE f/6.3 â± ISO 1600
*I use this one. It works for me, but it's a little tricky. It was a gift, and I think if choosing for myself I'd find something easier to get on and off.
WHAT'S ALL THIS, THEN? It was cold outside, obviously. And the flickers bolt if I try to open the back door, so sometimes I'll post up in front of my dining room window and just get the best shot I can. I do this less and less these days, now that my arthritic hands and I have heated gloves. The 'after' photo is a brand new re-edit using better tools than were available when this was shot. I was never happy with how it looked, before now.
under the cut: EDITS
â± Detail: Sharpness & Noise Reduction My main problem here is sharpness. The photo is in focus, but because I'm shooting through a thick storm window, I've lost that tack-sharpness I really want, and I have a whole bunch of noise to contend with. This would always be the case, but worse depending on the camera you're using, and in my case this was two generations ago - the GH5. I have tested window shots with the GH7, and they're a lot cleaner.
That being said, the trick is to always, always, always use masking along with sharpening. Like, a lot of masking, just so much masking, so that you avoid sharpening an already-noisy background. In Lightroom, you can hold down down the ALT key while using the masking slider to visualize exactly what is being sharpened.
I'm choosing to leave the background noisier than I prefer, because even if I mask out the background, as I increase noise reduction, I lose detail in the edges. Leaving some noise in the feathers also preserves that sense of sharpness, generally.
This is a matter of personal preference and priority in your edits. I've had students absolutely hammer their photos with denoise and like it that way, and that is totally their call. I like it sharp.
Note: you could also do the sharpening/noise reduction at the end, after all your other edits, so that you have a better sense of how much you still need after toning. That's often my preference. I probably went backwards here only because I've edited this image before and had it pre-loaded in my brain.
â± Tone Dehaze is the real MVP here. You could go even harder than I have on -blacks/+clarity/+dehaze, for a dramatic, crushed look. I decided to strike a balance between the soft darks I prefer but the clarity absolutely needed to make this look less smooshy. And my curve is pretty gentle.
Before toning and after:
(You can see that I've also done some color grading. But because that part is entirely personal preference, I'm skipping it here.)
â± Selective Adjustments With a photo as flattened as this one, I always want to add some depth to it with masking. I have just three masks in this case:
1. The tree was blown out, detracting from my subject and looking, frankly, unrealistic. So I've darkened this on its own, so that my subject will stand out.
2. Contrast, texture, and clarity to bring out the detail in the feathers; a touch of saturation because the global color grading I wanted took away slightly from the bird's natural coloring. I want this on a mask, and not globally, because I do not want to exacerbate the noise in the background, or the texture of the leaves and snow.
And 3., to make the flicker really pop, I've got a 'spotlight' mask
...which is working together with a light vignette to draw the eye to the subject. You could also create an asymmetrical vignette with an inverted -exposure mask, if you needed to.
All together now...
And that's it!
As always, please feel absolutely free to send any questions to my ask box. I try to watch for comments and questions in the tags, but sometimes they get missed. And if there are any other edits you'd like to see, let me know!

NGC 281 - the Pac-Man Nebula
A high-zoom look at the emission nebula NGC 281, which earned its nickname due to the scar-like dark nebula cutting out a region of it resembling Pac-Man's mouth. It's incredibly rich in details and a delight to shoot - I loved seeing how the contrast and detail improved as I added more data to the image. Below the cut are some earlier variants of the shot with less exposure time on various channels. See if you can spot how it evolved.
Shot at 1600mm with a 200mm aperture Ritchey-Chretien telescope and a ZWO ASI533MM Pro camera, using 7nm bandpass narrowband filters to achieve the SHO Hubble palette. Edited with PixInsight, including using the BlurXTerminator generative AI model for deconvolution and the free DeepSNR and StarNet2 AI models for noise reduction and star extraction.
A version with much less data in the red channel (Sulfur-II)
A very early draft with less data in the red and blue (Oxygen-III) channels. Note the uncorrected donut-shaped dark spots from specks of dust on my mirror that I didn't correct out in this draft.

What's your thoughts on suppressors? Specifically on pistols but also in general
not exactly the quietest unless youâre doing .22, .45, or 300 BLK. I might consider one on a dedicated home defense pistol. Definitely more interested in flash suppression than in noise reduction personally.

I remember hearing computer image generation be compared to the circle function on a drawing program, would you say that that's accurate?
not really? ai art is built on the hopes that your noise reduction algorithm will be biased enough to see your prompt in random noise so it can "reduce" that noise iteratively, like the prompt is a resonant tube that you stimulate with wind until it hums out a collection of pure tones. it's more like one of those slime mold particle simulations
