pre-portal character exploration. the only fic i think ive ever seen that dares to say bill was doing extremely fucked up shit with ford the entire time before things went bad between them, it's just that after the betrayal, ford viewed it all in a different light. handles bill's obsession with the guy so nicely, does not shy away from the scary and unnerving in just the way i love it! it's incomplete, but the story is really just a series of vignettes leading up to and a little after the betrayal, so we all know how this is all going to end anyways. this one is formative billford for me

set during weirdmageddon, bill and ford make a deal to play a game of sexy scary hide and seek. it's so fun to root for the villain. this author has an amazing grasp on the character voices and tone, this is SUCH a delightful read and despite knowing exactly how it's gonna end, the tension still keeps you at the edge of your seat!

Ah, thanks!! Its a natural feature, actually! Part of his respiratory system.

Here's a little diagram (and some explanations below the cut.)

Spiracles

The symmetrical breathe-y holes connected directly to the irken respiratory system and mouth through the tymbal. There are three on each side, located around where the lower ribs/coastal margin would be on a human.

Tymbal

A specialized sound making organ/resonating chamber located in the center of the chest, capable of producing a wide range of sounds. It is only visible from the outside as a little "plate" embedded over the sternum area. The visible portion varies only slightly between individuals. It vibrates when in use and can even be seen thrumming in some cases.

Additional Notes:

The modern irken is deisgned to be much more neotenic and therefore has a small tymbal with unrefined chambers that are meant only to be capable of the most simple chirps. It can make a few noises, though all are systemically discouraged. As the tymbal becomes less responsive and atrophies with disuse, stillness of the tymbal may sometimes be regarded as a sign of maturity.

I got reminded the Lacey's series exists and it really left me confused because... People love and praise that but hate on The Painter?

I want to say it's just bias because Lacey's is very well done style wise (the painter has great art but weak presentation), but Lacey's is pure fucking shock content w little substance. That's why I always hated it. And I still do. It's not even surprising.

And it a way it's fitting for it bc it has that strong 2010s/2000s vibes and horror back then was just like that lmao look at any old creepypasta but it's still edgy as shit.

And I don't want this to be me complaining about that series bc that's not my point what I'm complaining about is how I don't understand how the internet ADORED one but hated the other for arguably the same reasons.
