Canon has a tendency to give him the emotional range of a wet napkin, take every avenue they can to strip him of agency, and delight in lampshading his sort of status as an eventual trophy* by likening him to a damsel in distress.

Fanon has a tendency to run with this, actively ignoring his less savory tendencies and taking the most boring routes possible to characterize him**. He is stupid, he is blind, he is whipped, he's just a sweet boy who loves Marinette so much but is too much of a fucking idiot to notice, isn't that adorable? Adrien protection squad, what a smol bean Sunshine Boy is, isn't it so sad how he gets fucked over so often because he's just such a sweet PERFECT sunshiney adorable castrated flawless cupcake baby boy—

...I subscribe to a very simple, yet very effective principle when characterizing in order to give foundational depth (oxymoron half intended). The Rule Of Gap Moe basically states that when you push one trait or aspect of a character, the more satisfying it will be to subvert it.

Taking a boy who's built up as the perfect opportunity to deconstruct the archetype of the Dream Boyfriend (which is.. his entire existence in both canon and metacanon? Rich, Hot, Nice, Famous, Entirely and Secretly In Love With You?), only to refuse to do so, is a choice that aggravates me to no end.

Chat Noir, given the fact that most of his fanbase is 20 year olds who crushed on him in 2016 and never grew out of it, does not fucking count. All of his subversions of Dream Boyfriendism are either palatable or serialization growing pains not meant to be taken seriously***. There is nothing difficult to love about him.

...So?

Give him something you have to contend with.

Adrien is a loser in a very ornate closet of perfectness. He's deeply maladjusted from years of masking, and has constructed very elaborate delusions in his head of right or wrong ways to act—Don't rock the boat, keep your hands to your sides, walk exactly this fast because you mathematically derived it one night when you were twelve so Papa would never cane you for falling short of perfect again. He is deeply clingy, and underneath his mask of sugar glass lies a very emotionally turbulent, bitter young man. His years worth of functioning just to survive will one day snap and, in lieu of striving anything else, he will default to seeking nothing but a string of monetary pleasures and dopamine boosts because his only methods of regulating himself were imposed by abuse. Breaking out of his cage will, in essence, do to his system of repression what a pipe bomb would do to a water tower. He will do some very stupid, awful, self-serving things, and if we're lucky he'll say something incredibly unhinged in his never-ending internal monologue that we can gawk at for a moment.

The thing about all of this that separates it from, say, a normal Chat Noir anti-hero arc is that it inherently means Adrien will do some things we will not particularly agree with. That's interesting. Nowadays, that sort of "it's fun to see them make mistakes" is relegated to thought-terminating-cliches in sugar posts to dismiss any exploration into character choices, criticism or otherwise. This is why I make Sillynette unnecessarily cruel, too. Their flaws stick out like sore fucking thumbs. It's a little more complicated to like them that way.

And I think it's worth it.

*Which, granted, is a writer issue and not a Marinette issue. The reason this whole thing pisses me off is very much also due to the fact that a lot of really stupid shit occurs because Marinette has been written to make 'getting the boy' her priority just so she can fuck up. Cue S4 Finale Cue Ephemeral.

**Chameleon is another instance in which a very delicious possible ideological schism between Marinette and Adrien is effectively forgotten about in service of shippies, and only remembered in service of salting.

***Chat's harassment problem is equal to Marinette's stalking problem in this regard. They're formula jokes that have since soured, but because of misogyny or Marinette getting more focus or whatever, the latter is acknowledged more than the former.

He's another one who thinks it's silly at first but puts up with it because it's you! Really, for such an extrovert who loves being a comedian, he tends to get embarrassed a bunch. But as it goes, he is willing to do anything for love—of course with his own "professional input."

He runs the show in terms of what y'all are picking. He needs it to be a good mix of funny but cute ALWAYS. I see a small argument as you guys go back and forth on what to wear and how it should look. But ultimately, if you really pushed for it... he would go with what you want because he's above fighting over costumes (sometimes)

He could settle for a simple sun and moon costume, he is after all the brightest sunshine boy to exist. But it's fairer to say that y'all would end up going with a childhood favorite comedic character and who better than Doraemon! He would adore this idea up and down and out! Of course, he's gonna be Doraemon and you're going to be Mii-chan or Noramyako... let's be real he wouldn't let you get the chance to steal the Doraemon spotlight from under him.

Go with the flow all the way~ Which is to say he'd love to dress up with you and go with whatever ideas you have for him in terms of costume. He doesn't play into it as enthusiastically as others would but definitely is supportive through and through, constantly pushing you to challenge your ideas of what the costume should be. Very much the type to be like "What were you originally thinking?" if he notices you trying to tone it down - because despite what people may think he is very expressive, especially through fashion (as we know)

If he did give any sort of input or inspiration forward I definitely think he would be going for some sort of cartoon or comics, he's mentioned Hellboy before so I feel like that's a good route, I can also see X-men being a thing. But I'm a cartoon nerd at heart and OG carats know he used to rave about Adventure Time so I can definitely see him bring Simon & Betty to the table, maybe Marshal & Gary, perhaps a Fin & Flame Princess, or Jake & Lady. I'm a sucker for the idea of y'all as Wirt and Sarah from Over the Garden Wall though, like would die to see him in the vicinity of that show.

He is 100% the type to vehemently refuse, but as soon as you give him even an ounce of that sulky attitude, he changes his tune and is in for whatever you want. Such a lover boy, honestly. It's getting on my nerves how fast I see him change his mind for you tbh. If you actually get mad I feel like he would go off the rails and in a frenzy get a bunch of costumes as revenge/malicious compliance? In short, he gets mad at you for being mad but does what you want anyway... Yeah.

He's so Gomez Addams coded, I'm sick! Also you guys as the power couple of the Addams family? Yes, puhhhlease!! It's insane how much y'all would rock that shit. Down and out winning the costume contest, for sure! But I also see him turning down the idea if he doesn't know the movie... In that case, I feel like even if he hasn't seen Scream he would be down to do Ghostface. Not only would you guys look hot but he doesn't have to wear different makeup and I feel like that's a win for him in his book.

Lloyd puts on a show for Tommie. He slowly stalks toward your ex-boyfriend, a smirk on his lips and a knife in his left hand.

Lloyd ordered his men to strip Tommie and to restrain his wrists and ankles to the chair he was sitting on. They left him his plain cotton slip to cover his modesty.

“What do we have here?” Lloyd flashes Tommie a smile. Your ex-boyfriend fights the ropes holding him to the chair. He pants heavily and murmurs behind the makeshift gag Lloyd’s men made out of Tommie’s socks. “A piece of shit ready for the slaughter.”

Tommie sniffles behind the gag. He screams, desperate to tell Lloyd he’ll pay him any sum if only he shelters his life.

“Sunshine, I don’t wanna hear it,” Lloyd sits on a chair opposite Tommie. He crosses one leg over the other and sighs. “I told you about my rules. Now it’s too late. I’m not much into redemption.”

“Boss, we didn’t find money. All he had with him is over there,” the one reaching Tommie first says. He hands a phone and keys to Lloyd. “Nothing else.”

“Good job,” Lloyd nods in approval. “Enjoy your week off. Now leave me alone with my new friend. I think we need to have a serious conversation with Tommie boy…”

The panic in Tommie rises when the man capturing him silently leaves the room. He doesn’t know why he believed having the man there would keep Lloyd from killing him.

“Ple-ase,” he screams behind the gag the moment Lloyd gets back up from his seat. He shakes his head and struggles against the ropes.

“Relax,” Lloyd pats his cheek. “We have all the time in the world…”

Back and forth. You’re rocking back and forth. It’s all you can do. Somewhere in this large place Llyod Hansen, the man who came to end your life, is torturing your ex-boyfriend.

You should be happy, or gleeful. Tommie wanted to kill you and even hired two killers to get rid of you. For what – a house and a car. He wanted to take your life to make another woman happy.

Still, you don’t have it in you to wish pain or death on him. This isn’t you. All your life you tried to be a good person and help others. Even if Tommie tried to kill you, this is no reason for you to do the same to him.

Maybe, if the new woman in him didn’t influence him, he’d never do such a thing. Tommie wasn’t a bad person before he met her.

You shake your head. No. Tommie always was selfish in any way. You just didn’t want to see what was right in front of your eyes, believing you could change him for the better.

Sadly, he’s not a dog you can teach how to behave.

“What do I do?” You wring your hands. “What will he do to me after he’s done with Tommie?”

Sucking in a breath you hear the door to the bedroom Lloyd brought you to unlock. A petite woman in a maid outfit walks inside. She doesn’t look at you, nor does she say a word.

The woman places a tray with food and a bottle of water on the bed. She glances at you before turning to leave the room.

You’d love to talk to her but know better. Just like the men working for Lloyd, she wouldn’t answer your questions.

As much as you hate to admit it, you’re starving. It’s been hours since you ate your ordered food. Your stomach rumbles and you’ve got no other choice than to dig into the food.

“Ah, I see you’re enjoying the food,” Lloyd walks past the maid to enter the room. “Is it any good?” He questions while sitting next to you on the bed. “I took care of your little problem.”

Lloyd steals a green bean from your plate. He watches you still the fork, a smirk on his lips. “What now?” You feel an icy shiver run through your body. He kept his promise and killed Tommie. Not for you, of course. Lloyd killed the man not paying him for his service.

“Well,” he snatches another bean from your plate, “you paid me well to get rid of your ex-boyfriend.” Lloyd grins when you turn your head to look at him. “I got more money than he’d ever pay me.”

“What? I—no!” You shake your head. “I didn’t pay you a single buck!”

“Oh, yes,” he laughs when you look at him like a confused puppy. “Did you forget that you sold your house to pay me? I just received the money.”

You gape at Lloyd. This can’t be real. You’re sure you did not sell your house to pay him for murdering your ex-boyfriend.

“See,” he gets his phone out of his pocket to show you a transaction. “I received the transaction this morning. You’re officially my best customer this month.”

“What?” You feel like you are losing your sense of reality. Lloyd must be lying. If not, you lost your mind over the last few days.

He sighs exasperated. “Cupcake. Do you remember my rules?” Lloyd angrily asks. You nod hastily. “I do not kill people for free. You paid me to keep you safe and kill your ex-boyfriend. Which means, you gotta stay here for the time being until I find out if Tommie boy hired a more talentless hitman.”

Lloyd gets up from the bed. He looks you up and down before leaving the room. The lock clicks and you sit there in uncomfortable silence.

You didn’t pay him, but Lloyd made it look like you did. Why? Why would he do such a thing?

“Why?”

Lloyd watches you pace the bedroom. Back and forth. Back and forth until your feet are hurting. You clutch your hands to your chest, and sigh.

“Boss, what about the woman? Do we get rid of her too?”

“She paid me well to protect her,” Lloyd dips his head to look at the man working for him. The man nods and swallows the words burning on his tongue. If he says something wrong, he’ll end up dead too. “She will stay here for the time being. That woman is officially under my protection.”

“Got it, boss. I’ll tell the others.”

“Do that,” Lloyd turns his attention back toward the monitors on the wall. He leans back to watch you sit on the bed. He waits until he’s alone to pump up the volume. “What do I do with you now, cupcake…”

Luffy shouts, from somewhere overhead. Speaking of, your head is killing you. You scrunch your face against the bright sunshine searing orange onto your eyelids. You sit up, woozy. Are you…are you drunk?

No, worse.

Celestial.

“Shit…,” you mutter, swinging your legs off the bench you’ve been laying on. Something rocks the world sideways, and you gasp.

“Nyoop!” Luffy says as he catches you, midfall. You thunk your head against his chest. You’re so loose, and…heavy. You scrub a fist into your eyes. And then,

you stop.

Oh!

Oh.

“Oh, shit,” you say again, staring at the hottest person you’ve seen in your fucking life. This has been Nika the whole time?!

You stumble to your feet, your weight supported by the sun god of your dreams. “S-sorry!” You say, but the word is sour on your tongue. It doesn’t…fit, anymore.

After all, what have you to be sorry for?

And just like that, it’s gone.

Shame.

Shackles.

A skeleton that is made of bone instead of gold, blood that is not ichor, courage that is human and only ever human, melts away.

You are powerful.

Gold leaf and elaborate, they stretch out behind you like a monarch butterfly’s. You flap them experimentally, and find yourself floating several inches off the ground. You realight back onto the deck of the ship—for that’s where you are—and suddenly find yourself surrounded by people.

“So…what happens now?”

The sun god beside you laughs, squeezing your warmth into his side. You’re warmer, somehow.

“Now…,” he smiles dazzlingly, two inches from your face. “We say hi!”

The people (gods) gathered around the two of you smile and introduce themselves. Luffy whispers his relationship to them as they speak.

“Nami,” a slender, orange-haired goddess smiles at you. She has a logpose on her wrist. Her skin is smattered in flecks of constellational gold. Navigation, currency, stars.

Sister.

“Nico Robin!” Luffy says, smiling as he gestures toward the mysterious, dark-haired woman in a blue dress. Archeology, historical scriptures, stones.

Sister.

“Ace,” someone who smiles almost as wide as Luffy, shakes your hand with a warm fist. He’s even warmer than you are, now. “Fire, fistfights, and protecting your elders,” he grins.

He smells like cinnamon, too.

“He’s my brother!” Luffy says proudly. “And so is Sabo!”

Another handsome, blond man steps up to shake your hand. His is strong, tough yet flexible. He’s wearing a blue suit, with a strange hat atop his head. He bows, slightly. His lips brush the backs of your knuckles.

“Revolutions, secrets, obsessions,” he introduces his godly dominions with a strange smile on his wide face.

You trust him,

but also

don’t.

“Usopp’s here too! And Sanji, my friends,” Luffy leads you over to a charming male with dark skin and a kerchief around his hair. He’s toying with a slingshot in between dexterous hands. The god of snipers smiles at you sweetly.

Sanji (pale skin, yellow hair, swirly brows) is a chef god, someone who loves the sea and seafood and making girls cum. Oh, he says it with such a blush. Your wings flutter, stardust sparkling off them.

You are the goddess of springtime.

Of dawns and new beginnings.

Of song.

Sweetheart.

“I always did like ya singin’,” Luffy says quietly as he leads you away from the group. There’s another god: a strong, stoic man sitting with his back against the mast, his hands behind his mossy green head.

“Swordsman,” you say, curtsying slightly. This god is like a sleeping tiger. You are afraid of getting bit.

“Zoro,” he says his own name without opening his eyes, or barely even moving his face.

Luffy is undeterred, or else doesn’t care, because he lands in Zoro’s lap to place a kiss on his face. “Zoro’s my first mate!”

He stares cheekily up at you, capuchin smile plastered across his squishy face. You wrap a lock of hair around your finger, twirling it nervously. “S-so nice to meet you,” you stutter out, suddenly cowed by this samurai’s presence.

Swords, sacrifice.

Promises.

First mate.

Luffy squeezes your hands in both of his. “Lemme show ya my room,” he says, scanning your face as your anxiety grows.

Silently, you nod.

Luffy leads you across the deck of his sunshine ship, with the figurehead of a sunflower, no—lion.

He opens his captain’s quarters for you, letting you step inside first.

“So…,” he starts, suddenly shy as he watches you twirl around his room. “Whaddya think?”

“I think it’s lovely,” you smile at him, all floaty with your newfound goddess-ness.

“Springtime suits ya,” he says, stepping forward to skim his knuckles down your arms. “Sing for us sometime too, yeah?” He smiles dazzlingly down at you, his face suddenly mere inches from your own.

“Kiss me, sweetheart?”

He asks, raspy.

Luffy’s lips taste like sunlight.

He groans into the kiss, his hands tightening around your waist. Your chiton is gold now, it seems.

His body is strong, lithe, and muscular as he pushes you backwards onto the bed. He slides between your knees, standing in front of you as he cradles your head.

“Sweetheart,” he whispers, stroking his thumbs along your cheeks, “Stay with me for a while, yeah? Let’s have some adventures, mhm? Say you’ll stay…,” he leans forward to press his forehead against yours. His cloud-like hair squishes against your face.

“Say you’ll protect me first,” you counter, “Say you’ll stay with me.”

He snickers,

and then

he laughs.

“Of course I’ll stay with you!” He shouts, sweeping you up in his arms. He spins you around, and you’re dizzy. From the circles or his scent, you’re not sure. But he sets you down and nuzzles your face, kissing at your cheeks and then your chin.

“I was scared ya wouldn’t stick around,” he scratches the back of his fluffy white head.

“Why wouldn’t I?” You tilt your own godly head, butterfly wings slowly opening and closing behind you.

He scuffs his heel against the floor, sheepish. “Sometimes the priestesses just wanna have sex with me ‘n leave.”

He says it so simply, his heartbreak apparent in every syllable.

“Sorry,” you say, wrapping your hands around his. “Those stupid girls didn’t know what they were missing.”

He stops, stunned.

“Even though m’clumsy and break stuff?” He asks, rosy eyes wide.

You shake your head.

“Who cares? I’m clumsy too,” you smile, tugging his arms so he falls into bed beside you. He lies on his back, so you climb over him.

“So…you’re not gonna leave?” He asks hopefully, flush spreading across his cheeks. You shake your head, straddling his hips. He smiles: a truly bright, delighted smile. Full of pearly, square teeth. “Say you’re my sweetheart, y/n.”

“I’m your sweetheart, sun god.”

“And I’m your captain, spring goddess!”

Hey there, sunshine(s) and moonlight(s)! Do you want to rock your readers' worlds with mind-boggling plot twists? Well, lucky for you, I recently met a mind reader in my basement and they told me you want to know this. Buckle up, because we're about to begin a journey into the abyss. Kidding! We are going to the Kingdom of Twistano-Turnano; narratives that'll leave jaws on the floor and minds on some walls. Strap in, grab your favorite snacks and let's get this party started. (I believe that one was too much, right? Coz’ who’s got time for any parties? Or am I the only one missing out?) 

What Makes a Good Plot Twist?

Let's kick things off with the basics. A plot twist isn't just about throwing in a random curveball– oh no, it's about shaking up the very fabric of your story. A meaningful plot twist should be a seismic shift in the audience's perception, whether it's through an unexpected event, a shocking revelation, or a philosophical awakening. We're talking external, internal, and philosophical shifts that make the audiences question everything they thought they knew. It's about changing your audience's reality.

The Three Types of Shifts: External, Internal, and Philosophical

The external shift– think unexpected deaths, hidden treasures, and jaw-dropping identity reveals. These twists are all about rearranging plot elements in ways that leave readers gasping for air.

The internal shift– this one's all about messing with your audience's emotions. One minute they're feeling all warm and fuzzy, and the next, BAM! You hit 'em with an event that leaves them shaken to the core. Just make sure to keep things clear, or you'll have a bunch of confused readers scratching their heads.

The philosophical shift– the granddaddy of all plot twists. This one's all about making your audience question their beliefs and perceptions. You take 'em from thinking they've got it all figured out to realize that maybe, just maybe, they've been wrong all along.

To really knock your readers' socks off, you gotta apply all three shifts. That's right, no half-measures here. Using just one or missing one entirely is just going to confuse the shit out of your audiences. Trust me, you don't wanna do that.

What makes a plot twist good?

Shock Value: First things first, a good plot twist needs to pack a punch. We're talking about leaving your readers reeling, jaws on the floor, and minds blown. If it doesn't make 'em gasp, it ain't worth it. The key is to not settle for the first twist that comes to mind. Dig deep, get creative, and find a way to really knock your readers' socks off.

Believability: Sure, we love a good surprise, but it's gotta make sense, ya know? You can't just say that the human we have been following around is a dog disguised as a pizza! Nope, we ain't gone believe that boy. Keep it real. Actually, the real(er) the better. Foreshadowing is your best friend. Drop hints, plant seeds, and lay the groundwork for your twist early on. That way, when it finally hits, it'll feel like a natural progression of the story. (Maybe show me a barking human to make me go along with the pizza dog twist.)

Impact on Characters AND Plot: A truly great plot twist doesn't just shake things up for the sake of it. It needs to have real consequences, affecting not only the characters but the entire storyline. Don't just focus on the shock factor – think about how your twist will affect your characters and your plot. Will it send them spiraling into chaos? Will it force them to confront their deepest fears? Make it count.

Variety in Tropes: Cliched tropes are good but if you can manage to twist it up, that's even better. Try to give us something we've never seen before. Surprise us, delight us, and keep us guessing 'til the very end. But don't be afraid to break the mold. Sure, some tropes are tried and true, but the best twists are the ones that defy expectations. Surprise your readers, challenge their assumptions, and leave 'em begging for more.

Timing: Timing is literally everything. You need to build up to the right moment for that twist like a mastermind supervillain. Keep your readers on their toes. Drop breadcrumbs along the way, build up the tension, ratchet up the suspense, and then hit 'em with that (do-do do-do) twist right when they least expect it. You gotta know exactly when to drop that grenade. Trust me, it'll be worth the wait.

Plot Twist Techniques:

Breadcrumbs: The classic "how did I not see this coming" twist. Make 'em scratch their heads and wonder, "How did I miss that?" Lay the groundwork for your twist by dropping subtle hints and clues throughout your story. It's all about planting those breadcrumbs and watching your readers play Sherlock Holmes.

Misdirection: The good ol' red herring. Lead your readers down one path, only to yank the rug out from under them at the last minute. Get 'em emotionally invested in a particular outcome, then flip the script and watch 'em squirm. Mix this with the breadcrumbs and you have a beautiful pie.

The False Win: Picture this – your characters are riding high, victory is in sight, and then BAM! You hit 'em with the ultimate plot twist: it's not over yet. Give 'em a false sense of comfort, then snatch it away like a cruel twist of fate. 

The Unprovoked: Ever seen a plot twist  that leaves you scratching your head and wondering, "Where did that come from?" That's the unprovoked twist. It happens out of nowhere, catching everyone off guard and leaving 'em reeling. It's unexpected, it's unpredictable, and it's oh-so deliciously twisty.

Types of Twists: The classics

Identity Reveal: Remember the "I am your father" moment? Yes. There's nothing quite like the shock of discovering that a character's true identity isn't what it seems. Whether it's a long-lost twin or a secret agent in disguise, identity reveals never fail to leave readers gasping for air. Mix it up to make it newer and you have an even tastier sandwich.

Motive Reveal: Ever wondered why that one seemingly innocent character was acting so shady? Well, it's time for a motive reveal – the moment when all becomes clear and the true intentions behind a character's actions are laid bare. It's like peeling back layers of an onion, only way more dramatic. (Plot twist: This entire post has been written so you will buy my book, The Sinner and The Scarred from Amazon! Background Reveal: Behind every great character is a great backstory. Well, these backstories can also be great plot twists. (What? The hero's love interest is the villain's child. WHAT? The hero's love interest is the villain! WHAT? THE HERO IS DATING BOTH THE VILLAIN AND THEIR CHILD!!) From dark secrets to hidden traumas, background reveals add depth and complexity to your story.

Character Deaths: Sometimes, the only way to shake things up is by "killing your darlings." Actually, whether it's a beloved hero sacrificing themselves for the greater good or a villain meeting their untimely demise, character deaths are guaranteed to leave readers in shock and awe. Especially when done right. (Set the mood for a fun wedding. Then kill someone at the wedding. Kill the bride. Or the groom. Kill 'em both. Have them kill each other!)

Destruction of Setting or Important Elements: Say goodbye to the status quo, because we're about to shake things up with a little destruction. Whether it's a beloved setting crumbling to the ground or a crucial element of the story being obliterated, destruction twists add a sense of urgency and chaos to your narrative. (Burn your hero's house down. Extra points if their family was still inside. Minus points if their dog was in there, though.)

Timeline Shift: A timeline shift can turn your story on its head, sending characters hurtling through time and space or revealing shocking truths about the past, present, and future. (It will be a weird way to find out you’re adopted, you know?)

Surprising Events in General: Sometimes, you just gotta throw caution to the wind and hit your readers with something completely unexpected. From random acts of kindness to bizarre coincidences, surprising events add an element of unpredictability to your story that'll keep readers guessing until the very end. 

Special Ability Reveal: The moment when a character discovers they've got powers beyond their wildest dreams, things start getting out of hand. Whether it's flying, telekinesis, or the ability to talk to animals, special ability reveals add a touch of magic and wonder to your story.

Do remember when it comes to plot twists, the sky's the limit. But placement is key. Whether it's smack dab in the middle of your story or right at the climax, the timing of your twist can make or break its impact. 

Now, let's touch on what NOT to do. Forced twists? No, thank you. Unbelievable plot developments? Hard pass. And let's not even get started on the dreaded plot armor– nothing kills the vibe faster than a last-minute rescue by bad writing. (Leave a comment if you’d like to learn more about what NOT to do!)

you were sat in your small apartment seated by the window that was littered with falling raindrops, soft thunder ran throughout the skies as you silently drank the warm cup of tea infront of you, the weather matched your mood, you've always felt like this since before you could remember, you don't remember what triggered it but you started falling into this deep abyss of foreign emotions, lost in the darkness you found comfort in until you finally hit rock bottom. That is, until you saw him, walking through the halls of your school with a tall intimidating guy that had a black dragon tattooed on the side of his head, you initially thought he was bad news and no good due to people whispering about how the bleach blonde boy was "the invincible Mikey" and how he ran "..The most dangerous gang in Tokyo" you kept your distance for as long as you could until he one day approached you with a confused look on his puppy face. "Excuse me do you know where Takemitch Hanagaki is?" he asked his head tilted to the side "oh- uhm I don't think anyone by that name goes here- but I can help you look if you'd like" you offered with a smile, something about this boy made you feel something, his aura was inviting and welcoming, and it made you feel something you haven't felt in a long time but you couldn't pin-point what it was "Oh really? that would be nice thank you lady!" he said with a small laugh that made you smile even more, it was child-like and rang through your ears like a soothing melody. 'If he knows about my real emotions he'll for sure not want to be friends with me anymore' and you swore to yourself to never let Mikey see that dark ugly side of you, even when he was sad or talked about him brother, you always were right there to comfort him, to make him smile as long as he was happy you were happy...right? "Y/N why are you sad?" Mikey asked one day as you both were walking alongside each other the sun was setting painting a beautiful array of pastel colors, you turn to Mikey with a confused expression "..huh?" I hope this doesn't sound rude, but I was dying of laughter for a good while when you said that you were spooked by the opening of my previous ask. To be fair, I would be too. It's pretty agressive. I just wanted to throw you for a loop, My bad.

This is off topic, but I wanted to talk about Bully. Do you like Jimmy? I like him. I enjoy his snark and determination. Do you have a favourite character? A favourite clique? Mine would be the preps. They're aggravating as hell but I like their bitchiness. I especially ship Jimmy with Gord. I like the dynamic of a prissy bitch preppy boy with a snarky punk guy (I always dressed Jimmy as punk/goth) who challenges Gord's prejudices and upbringing. Besides, all the other girls in the game are boring as shit. With the exception of Zoe. She's cool.

And do you like the story? Would you change the ending? Or do you wish they explored something a bit more? It's been so long since I've played... but I wouldn't mind more side missions. Just more character interaction!

I'm actually super shocked that you like George Michael/Wham!. I literally gasped. I've noticed that the majority of tlb fandom tends to dislike pop from the 80s (or maybe just in general, idk) and tend to favour rock music. (I like rock too...I'm just more versatile with my music, I guess) I was expecting you to say that you didn't like them. But that's such a nice surprise. My all-time favourite song by George? Probably Fastlove, Pt 1. It... I just...I love how it's funky and fresh and energetic. But despite it's upbeat sound, a sad story is hidden in the lyrics. It talks about missing his dead boyfriend and pursuing intimacy with other men, hidden in the dark of the night. He slips a male pronoun in song, and you can just tell he was screaming, suffering by being in the closet, and suffocated by heteronormative expectations of society. Opps... accidentally made this too heavy. But at the moment I really like "A Ray of Sunshine" by Wham! It's about George being too scared to sleep with a guy, so they just end up cuddling through the night. Most of the lyrics are pretty unassuming but I really like when he says "I can't stop this rythum in my heart". I just interpret as him saying he can't help his attraction towards the guy, or men in general. I just find George very comforting... A safe space.

That's pretty wild that you listen to music from the 1910s. How do you even get exposed to something that old? The oldest music I listen to is Sinatra, and that's only a few songs. And I like Gorillaz too! Murdoc is my fave!

And Is Malice Mizer a Japanese artist? The name of an album? Because I tried looking them up on apple music and all it pulled up was an album...

As for Nsync... I just randomly found a song of their's on YouTube that I liked and I binged their entire discography. I have a soft spot for music from the Noughties. It reminds me of being a kid. Some favourites from the decade are Lady (Hear me Tonight) and Groovejet (If This Ain't Love).

uh to be honest i don't really know how i got exposed to music that old bur i remember when i was still in middle and high school instead of paying attention i would sometimes watch silent films. i think as i started to listen to music from the 60s or so i just started to go earlier and earlier through the decades until eventually i hit 1910s and there isnt much recorded music before that that isnt classical.

General Review:

Just wow. I did in fact spend like all day reading this and I do not regret it and even though it’s not done… this is literally a 5/5 read. Firstly the way that my baby Tay writes is so phenomenal and the depictions of the relationships and the amount of emotions and thought they she puts throughout the story makes everything so worth it. I really felt so attached to the characters and the overall story like i didn’t care how long the chapters were because i was so interested in the world she build and the CHARACTERS. Like it just keeps getting better and better; the amount of drama and messy that kept me on my toes every chapter. I cannot wait for the next chapter. The amount of stuff that went down in this fic and the route it’s going down idek how she got the life depicted in the first chapter because it’s shit happening every second like whew. I literally got so emotional reading this especially the more recent chapters because my heart hurtssss for reader so bad and it’s just so much strain on her and idgaf that’s my girl! I support women’s wrongs and she got a lot of them but that’s my baby like omg!

Now let’s delve in to my reactions ofc 🙈

CHAPTER 1: okay so obsessed with the fact that reader has a daughter firstly. The way you describe reader’s relationship and the dynamic she has with Armin and even the shift to his pov was very seamless and perfectoooo. The way you got in his head and i feel immersed inside of his thoughts about her and i just thought it was really well written and so beautifully executed. “Being with you but not truly being with you was like having an itch that begged to be scratched.” Like that line right there? It burneddd me and make me feel for him and overall i got invested. Can I add that Armin working in a bakery was very on par with his character lol? Like i love it. Your description of anything is very addicting as well let me add, im a sucker for details so i loved it. I was cheesing DOWN during their moments and when he took her to their childhood hangout place and the hold “date” bit came up and the “but even so, the implication of romance with him felt as natural as breathing.” Likeeee omg i was blushing. “I was always planning on leaving, but…not without you.” Oh that moved me like bad. I’m a sucker for childhood friends to lovers and hearing them reminiscing and just wanting to move out of where they are to make a lifeee was so good. “Since when was he ever so lucky? Since when did fate decide to show him a little bit of pity and mercy? The universe had taken everything from him before he was even old enough to know how to spell the word “universe.”” UGHH you’re killing meeee. And then armin’s backstory stop 😞😞😞. I am preparing to send you a long ass post about my character analysis of Mac but it's taking a lot of time so while I work on that please have a list of songs that read as shadow peach tragedy to me:

Gossip, by Manëskin, this is a fast paced rock song that feels like closer to modern!shadow peach with the singer mocking the establishment (heaven) that the person (Wukong) the song has joined (there is also a cool AMV on YouTube if you punch in the song name and the show name)

And that's not even mentioning how the instrumental part of the song plays out with its frantic mood and then lulls as it goes on.

This is making Nori feel worried about him, maybe he is bothered by Joel's presence but this wouldn't be something that would make Noah mad - at least not that mad.

When he's out of her sight, she wonders where he is and feels that she needs to be close to him, making sure that he enjoys his last hours in her homeland. Meanwhile, in the man's bathroom, it's like a match it's about to start. Noah didn't like to meet his arch enemy there and he couldn't hide it: his eyes turned black with the sight. It's just the two of them: the boys that are starring roles in Nori's love life. In one corner, the american ray of sunshine and singer of Bad Omens, Noah Sebastian. In the other corner, the Finnish dark prince and singer of Blind Channel, Joel Hokka. In the blonde one's mind, it's good that he is having the opportunity to be alone with the brown haired one - he definitely has some things to say.

“I hope you are not messing around with Nori, she doesn't deserve to be hurt” he says with a strong Finnish accent.

“More than you already did?”.

“You think you know something but you just came into her life… what? One or two months ago?”.

“I know what she told me. You treated her like shit and now think that you can have her back. She's not dumb”.

“Maybe she won't come back to me, but she also will not end up with you”.

“Because of what? She likes security? Bullshit. You are the one who doesn't know a single shit about her”.

“You think you are the king, Noah Sebastian”.

A five minute drive leads them to a small white brick building with vintage windows. The hallways are small and kinda dark, and soon they are on the third floor. Nori's apartment is a cozy place, there's an open concept kitchen with gray wood cabinets and a table with six chairs. In the living room, a large gray couch with lots of pillows in front of the big screen TV, some vinyl records and a record player, lots of plants decorating the place and renaissance paintings on the wall.

Saw the ask saying thank you for actually giving us an MC that represents what having mental health issues is really like and I agree. I kinda feel like there isn't enough IFs like this. It's not just about the scary bits tho those I'm gonna fucking love because that's a rarity in itself in the community. But it's about the complex relationships we have with people. It's not all let's fall head over heels at first sight and everything is sunshine and cupcakes. MC has a really difficult relationship with not just their family but with people in the community as a whole seeing them as some sort of problem. Not just a person struggling.

The family dynamics are also very real unfortunately because favoritism to some parents is very common even when they won't admit it outright and it can weigh heavily on the mind in the sense of why you aren't good enough or as good as your siblings. Then people wonder why that specific person isn't reaching their potential. There is alot to say about nature vs nurture.

And out of pocket yes but I also appreciate that this is about people and not about people getting their rocks off. I see the trend too much lately where everything is just smut overshadowing the actual premise of the story and that being all you see in asks. I like this community. I like that you guys make me think about shit I wouldn't have and I appreciate Jude for responding in similar fashion and never telling us (me) I ramble too much lol I've unfortunately had a writer tell me that before 🙈

But yeah I felt like sometimes people who have mental health issues might not want to play games where instead of acceptance they receive suspicion, fear and sometimes disgust (unfortunately very real) but that’s what I wanted to do. Given it’s a small town and given that it’s the 90s people reacting like this to mc is common. I’ve always liked to write about very dark themes not with an intention to glorify but to depict. Even if mc has done violent things that doesn’t mean that the discrimination they face is just (if you read chapter 2 the way the detective treats mc is awful and it’s a greater indictment on society as whole who group all people who suffer with issues as one).

With the family yeah? Percy and mc are in the same boat. Both of them stunted because they weren’t the favourites of their parents and they were shown that all their childhoods.

With the smut, you see I like it but I don’t like it over plot. For me smut in IFs only ever truly hits if the relationship is there, if it’s been earned. I’m fine with flings with characters who never show up again but sex with the principal romances, makes me feel more excited if that relationship feels real and it doesn’t happen sacrificing the logic of the story or interrupts the pace. Basically I can’t do porn without plot 😭 (oddly enough I can consume the prompts though but I have to be in love with the RO). It’s fine if some authors prioritize that over the story because it’s their choice and it’s respectable but I can’t. It doesn’t feel honest to the story to have mc jump straight into bed with the ROs. It’ll happen when it needs to.
