A/N: Yeah, the brain rot has reached a maximum and I've completely disregarded the consequences of a digital footprint! there's a couple descriptions of style of clothing/jewelry but you can imagine that as you please, also absolutely based off of "Babe Im Gonna Leave You" by Led Zeppelin bc idk somewhere in my delusions I think Logans a Zeppelin kinda guy and its what I've been listening to. For the sake of the plot, stick with me, you've got an imaginary ex bf and his random name I picked is gonna be Danny and he suuuucks real hard okay? okay and I need you to pretend dear lovely reader that you like led zeppelin if you don't 💔[holding your face ever so gently and smooching ur forehead] and I've seen only xmen origins, x-men, X2, and Deadpool x wolverine so pls pls forgive me if some stuff doesn't canonically fit. This is kind of cringe but I wrote too much of it to get rid of it just bare with me I beg of u and it was so long I had to split it into two parts
Summary: Meeting the infamous Wolverine got you roped into a liiiitle more than what you bargained for

There had been muttering here and there between the students at the academy that Wolverine was coming back after a few years on his own, confirmed when Marie recognized the motorcycle now parked in the driveway of the mansion.
"Logan!"
He was immediately wrapped into a hug by Marie at the door, dropping his bags to the floor.
"Hey, kid, miss me?"
"Maybe," she smiled sweetly, tucking the white strands of hair behind her ears.
"Long time no see, huh?" Ororo's voice interrupted from behind her, earning a hug from Logan.
"Any one else around?" he questioned, hoisting his bag up over his shoulder again.
"Scott and Jean are around here somewhere, Charles as well. Oh, and there's a couple new faces you haven't met," she responded, smiling at the way Marie's eyes lit up at the chance to mention what she had been meaning to tell Logan.
Marie gasped and said your name, grabbing Logan's arm in excitement, "you have got to meet her. She joined us a couple of months ago, I think you'll really like her. She's kind of been like...our you, when you've been gone."
He quirked an eyebrow at that, looking between the both of them for an explanation as to what that was supposed to mean.
"You'll see," Ororo chuckled lightly, "oh, you will see."
"She's here now, I think, you should go introduce yourself to her!"
Logan had swiftly caught onto Marie's adorable attempt to play cupid and gave her a nod, "maybe when I settle in, okay, kid?"
She nodded in agreement and both her and Ororo watched him walk off further down the corridor.
"How do you think it will go when they meet?" the later of the two asked earnestly once he was out of sight.
"Well," Marie paused for a moment, thinking, "they'll be inseparable or absolutely hate each other."
Ororo nodded in agreement almost immediately, holding in a small laugh.
Much later in the evening, Logan had been beckoned into the study along with Ororo, Marie, Bobby, you, Jean and Scott by Charles.
He had been the last to enter, eyes immediately settling on your unfamiliar frame stood next to Marie with your back against the wall. You had plenty of rings adorning your fingers and necklaces dangling in front of your chest in the same kind of fashion he'd seen in those magazines with the Harley biker girls. You looked a little like one of them too, in well fitting jeans adorned with a belt, a band shirt and some chunky boots, except you were very much real and not on glossy paper.
"Oh! Logan!" Marie exclaimed upon noticing his arrival, beckoning him over with her hand. That turned your attention to him and he felt like the wind may have been knocked out of him when your eyes met his. You were far prettier than any of the girls he'd seen in any magazine.
"This is her," Marie whispered to Logan when he approached and nudged his arm, referring to when she had told him about you earlier.
"This is Logan," Marie said to you, gesturing towards him and leaning a little closer to you to whisper something he wouldn't catch, "and he's single, by the way."
A grin was plastered on her face when she pulled away and you rolled your eyes, "Marie - "
"I know, I know, too soon, but I just thought that was very good information for you to know," she raised her hands and stepped away a little, still intent on watching how the two of you interact for the first time.
Logan extended a hand for you to shake and you did the same. Your hands were small in his and your skin soft to the touch. It was almost hard for him to drop your grip when he did, nervous that he'd hold it even a second too long.
Nervous. Women had rarely ever made him nervous in the hundred - something years he'd been alive, and yet he could feel his heart pounding in his ears when you ran your hands through your hair to push it out of your face.
"Nice to meet you," he finally spoke, shoving his hands into the pockets of his jacket.
This may have been a good opportunity to try out your powers a little, concentrate hard enough on the handsome stranger's face to know what exactly was playing out behind his staring gaze, but you resisted the urge to do what you considered a tad bit violating.
"Same here," you responded at last, averting your gaze for just a moment to avoid inadvertently doing exactly what you had just decided you wouldn't.
Marie and Ororo had studied the small interaction between the two of you - of course - waiting for something more to happen, only to be disappointed when the both of you nodded courtly and turned away from each other.
"Well, that's not good. He'd be on her like a dog already - " Ororo started under her breath.
"No, no, I just think..." Marie interrupted, narrowing her eyes between the two of you, "I think they just need to get to know each other."
"Honey..."
"I'm telling you, I just feel like they'd be good together, they just need a chance to get to know each other!"
"Do you really think she's ready to get with another guy?" Ororo nodded her head in your direction, lowering her voice, "after all that stuff Danny pulled?"
Marie grimaced at the mention of one of the professors names, shaking her head in mild disgust, "have you seen him lately? always coming up to her in the halls and stuff, it's sad - for him, I mean."
Before either of them could further debate the topic, Charles gained everyone's attention to discuss a series of tasks he'd assigned to you all. As he spoke, you only tuned in once you heard your name.
"You are the one I'd like to send out to complete that with Daniel."
"Could, uh, can I do it with someone else? or have him do it alone, or something?"
Logan caught the confused look Jean shot your way, tilting her head before she spoke, "You don't want to go with Danny? What happened, I thought the two of you -"
You cut her off with a sharp shake of your head, scowling, "uh-uh. Hell no. He...uh, I'll tell you about it later."
You had realized the sudden vulnerability you'd found yourself experiencing in a room full of eyes on you and cleared your throat, attempting to change the subject.
"I can hang back and keep an eye on the kids, I don't mind."
"They do love you," Ororo chimed in, "and we need someone to stay back to watch them anyway."
"They only like her so much because she allows them to break the rules," Scott remarked, earning a nudge in the arm from Jean.
You sighed, rolling your eyes, "Scott, the thing with the kids in your room was one time and it was an accident - "
"Was it? Because one of them wrote 'asshole' on my bathroom mirror with sharpie."
"They're kids, they do that kind of stuff!"
"was that really one of the kids?"
You tucked your lower lip under your teeth in an attempt to smother a laugh. Logan almost immediately did the same when you darted your eyes around the room in a guilty attempt to avoid eye contact.
"You've gotta be fucking kidding me - " Scott started but Charles interrupted, holding up a hand.
"Alright, the both of you - enough. You," he continued, gesturing towards you, "may stay back with the children. Please do not allow them into anyone's personal quarters and I would advise you to hide the permanent markers for the time being, away from the children and perhaps yourself."
You nodded and hung your head low to hide the reappearing smile across your face. Logan stared inadvertently from then on, watching you twist your rings around your fingers and focusing on you intently when you spoke every now and then. When you were all dismissed by Charles and filed out of the room, you and Marie walked ahead of most of the group, almost out of ear shot.
Logan heard Jean's hushed voice behind him as she leaned into Scott, "so...what do you think happened? With Danny?"
"Who the hell is this Danny guy?" he finally asked, turning over his shoulder to interrogate the two of them.
"Well," Jean whispered your name, looking ahead to be sure you hadn't caught their conversation, "it's her boyfriend. Or was, I guess. They had a thing for awhile but they stopped hanging around each other all the sudden and she can't even stand to hear his name - she hasn't told me what it's about yet."
Logan simply hummed in acknowledgment, turning back ahead and finding his gaze caught on the sway of your hips as you walked.
"Oh no," he heard Ororo huff beside him, almost immediately following her gaze to see a guy he didn't recognize slip behind you and put an arm around your waist. Too far out of ear shot to hear the context, he watched you squirm out of the young mans grip and shake your head as you kept walking.
"Is it bad I want to get closer to hear what they're saying?" Ororo muttered, looking to the other three in her proximity.
"It's not our business," Jean reminded her.
"So, that's him?" Logan asked, gesturing to the guy still on your heels like a puppy.
"uh - huh," Ororo answered, frowning as she watched Danny make another pathetic attempt to put his arm around you.
When the two of you stopped at the far end of the hall and you told Marie it was okay to leave you, Logan, Ororo, Scott and Jean all turned the corner to the closest hallway.
"Oh, I know It's bad but I have got to know what lame excuse he's got this time," Ororo shook her head, stopping just around the corner to eavesdrop.
"Ororo - " Jean sighed, placing a gentle hand on her friend's arm, "come on."
"They're in the hallway! it's not like I'm standing outside a door," she reasoned, hushing them after so that the only voices hard were yours and Danny's.
"How many times do I have to tell you that I'm sorry - "
"Danny, many times do I have to tell you I don't care? Why won't you just leave me be?"
You sounded exasperated, your voice slightly muffled when you rubbed your face with your hands.
"What do you think he did?" Scott chimed in in a hushed town, now fully invested in the dialogue.
Logan was still stood there, though he wasn't too sure why. He could have and should have kept walking - let the three of them do their weird detective work - but instead found himself leaned against the wall with the rest of them.
"I love you, you know that, sweetheart, I - "
"ugh, don't call me that. You gross me the hell out, you know that?"
Both Jean and Ororo made almost the same shocked expression.
"oh, it has to be bad," Jean hissed, frowning at the venom in your tone.
"Tell me you're not still in love with me, you know you can't, we - " Danny's voice began again and yours cut him short with a sense of finality in your tone.
"Danny. I stopped being in love with you the day I walked in on you fucking another other girl."
Jean's hands flew to her mouth to muffle a shocked gasp. Scott stood with his arms crossed, his face in a grimace.
"ooh, that is bad," Ororo whispered just as a door slammed.
Logan furrowed his eyebrows, following everyone else as they continued their path down the hall again. This Danny kid had to be a real idiot.

Weeks had passed and you shared small talk with Logan every now and then, sometimes making snarky comments here and there - though more often than not together and at Scott's expense. Funnily enough, the ability to piss Scott off so much made Logan like you even more. Maybe Marie was right, you kind of are like him.
You walked alongside him down the corridor one afternoon, intending to fulfill Ororo's request for the both of you to check in on some of the newer students.
"So, do you always do your hair like that?" you raised your eyebrows up at him, eyeing the peaks in his hair.
"Yeah. What, you don't like it?" He grinned, expecting you to make some smart remark about it.
"No, not that," you giggled, "it's like lil' cat ears, it's cute."
He looked down at you quizzically, stopping in his tracks.
"cat ears?"
"mm-hm. You're like a big kitty."
You bit down another giggle, reaching up boldly to touch his hair.
He gently swatted your hand away, still with a small grin on his face.
"Don't call me that."
"Big kitty?"
"Yes."
"Okay, kitty meow - meow."
He narrowed his eyes as you turned to continue walking in an attempt to hide the huge smile plastered on your cheeks that threatened to transform into a rather loud laugh.
"Uh-huh, whatever. You better not let anyone else hear you call me that," he huffed as he caught up to you rather easily.
As you were about to make another retort, your smile dropped at the sight of a familiar and unfriendly face that had come from around a corner.
"Christ," you squeezed your eyes shut in frustration, rubbing your forehead at the sight of your ex-boyfriend.
"Hey," Logan leaned down a little, nudging you gently, "I'm here, you're good. You're fine, don't worry about him. It's just us, alright? Walk past him like you don't even see him."
Though he'd be embarrassed to admit and absolutely deny it if anyone asked, he'd unfortunately (for himself) harbored a crush on you that only took a couple weeks to develop. He hadn't even really gotten the chance to know you yet, though that was precisely why he was glad about moments like these. He wanted to, even if he felt like a school kid with a playground crush.
You had simply nodded at his words, allowing him to place a gentle hand on your upper back to guide you down the hall with him. Even through the layer of a jacket and t-shirt, you could feel the warmth of his hand on you.
Logan remembered that moment in the hall on the first day you'd met, but never pestered you for details about what the hell went on before he got back. He figured when and if you wanted to tell him, that was up to you.
Keeping your eyes straight ahead, it took what felt like years to pass your ex-boyfriend. When you finally did, you let out a breath you didn't know you were holding, until his voice stopped you in your tracks.
"That's my shirt."
You whipped your head around, feeling Logan slip his arm a little further around you as a protective reflex.
"What?" you furrowed your eyebrows, looking down at your attire. The shirt, a tad oversized and well worn, was so familiar that you had completely forgotten it once did belong to him.
"I want it back," he spoke again, crossing his arms.
"Do you really want it back?"
You were beyond fed up with his pestering at this point, already having decided what may make the message clear.
"Yes."
"Okay. Fine."
You pulled away from Logan and slipped off your jacket, turning around to hand it to him. He gave you a confused look, hesitantly taking it out of your hands. In a matter of seconds, you turned back around and tugged the t-shirt up and over your head, tossing it directly at Danny's chest. You turned back and took your jacket from Logan's hands, zipping it far enough to cover your bra. In the few seconds you had stood facing him, he had done his best to keep his eyes away from your body and failed miserably, looking up after to see the asshole a few feet away already glaring at him.
"What, you're just gonna walk around like that? And what are you doing hanging out with him anyway, don't you know he - "
You groaned at the sound of Danny's voice again, gently tugging Logan by the hand in the opposite direction as you began to walk away, "yap, yap, yap - just shut the fuck up."
Logan couldn't help the smirk plastered across his face as you continued to walk, finally turning a corner. Before you could apologize to him for having to awkwardly stand witness to that, Scott's voice echoed from the stairway above you.
"Hey, Charles is looking for you two. He says he has something he needs you to take care of, he didn't say what."
"Thanks for the specifics, Scott," you replied sarcastically, "but we're supposed to check on - "
"I know," he interrupted, "I got Marie and Bobby to cover you. You're welcome, by the way."
You rolled your eyes and looked back to Logan, dreading what exactly it was Charles wanted from you.
That landed you where you were the next morning, heaving your bags into the back of Logan's truck.
"If we have to take the truck like two states over, can I at least drive?"
The plane being needed for another assignment that Jean, Scott and Ororo were assigned left the two of you with Logan's truck. You'd been asked to retrieve a rare mechanical piece needed for the construction of some new device; you'd only been half-listening when Charles started to explain the details, lost in thought after he'd mentioned it would require the two of you to sleep out overnight.
Man, that had made your chest feel tight. It had been almost physically painful trying to swallow down every tell that you really liked him for the past few weeks and now you had no choice than to be each others only company for nearly 2 days.
"Yeah, in your dreams, kid," Logan scoffed playfully and brought you back to reality, dangling the keys in his hand.
You narrowed your eyes at the keyring he began to spin around his finger. In a split second, the jangle of the metal could be heard as you snatched them from his hand with only a focused thought.
You caught them in your raised palm and tilted your head, a terribly smug smile across your cheeks.
"Looks like my dreams came true, huh?" you teased, walking past a still mildly distraught Logan to get into the drivers side.
"If you dent it, I'll kill ya," he warned as he finally slid into the passenger seat, watching your every move as you started the engine and carefully reversed out of the garage.
"Uh-huh, sure," you retorted sarcastically, "I'm terrified of the kitty claws."
"What did I say about calling me that?"
"Calling you what?" you feigned ignorance, fumbling with the knob on the stereo to change the station as your eyes stayed glued to the road.
"And don't mess with everything, kid, you'll end up breaking something. She's on old girl, you gotta - "
"Dude," you interrupted, simultaneously cranking down your window and fishing a pair of sunglasses out of his center console, "I know how to drive, chill out."
"Dude," he mocked, "this truck is probably almost as old as you, you gotta be careful."
You rolled your eyes under the shades of the worn aviators you had slipped onto your nose, simply nodding and continuing to flip through stations.
"Pick one and stick with it, will you?"
"Ooh, is someone mad I got the keys?"
Before he could say something in response, you gasped at sound of the song playing on the station you had just switched to, twisting the knob almost as far as it could go.
Logan recognized the familiar thump of "babe I'm gonna leave you" by Led Zeppelin, furrowing his eyebrows when you began to nod your head and sing along.
"You like Led Zeppelin?" he nearly had to shout over the music, leaning in to you a little further.
"Yeah," you responded, reaching over to turn the music down just enough for you to hear each other and glancing at him momentarily, "How come you're looking at me like that?"
He unfurrowed his eyebrows and shrugged, keeping his gaze on the road ahead as he spoke, " just never pegged you for a Zeppelin kind of girl, I guess."
"No? What's that supposed to mean?"
You were smiling again and it was excruciatingly difficult for him not to stare when you looked so good in the spot he usually sat with his old sunglasses on.
"Didn't think you had good taste in music."
That made you giggle and you shook your head, turning the stereo back up to a booming volume.
He watched you tap your fingers on the steering wheel to the drums as you continued to drive, occasionally moving to push your windswept hair out of your face. The morning sun shining through your open window highlighted your features perfectly and Logan sighed without a thought, unheard over the music. Jesus, he had it bad.
You could feel his stare in your peripheral vision every time he looked to you and it felt far warmer than the sun beating down on you from the opposite direction. You truly rarely ever used your developing skill of telepathy, feeling it was only justified when absolutely necessary to obtain information, but his burning gaze nearly had you veering off the road at times and his prior answer to the question of why he was looking at you that way wasn't too convincing.
With a deep breath, already wondering if it was a mistake, you kept your eyes focused to the road but gradually concentrated on the man beside you. Sometimes people's thoughts would appear as inner dialogue, other times as imagined scenarios, daydreams or visuals. You were confused, then, when you only saw an image of yourself as you were now. If you concentrated too hard, your own thoughts would transfer to Logan's mind and it would be humiliatingly obvious that you had been poking around in his consciousness and so you tried to clear your mind and try again, assuming your own mind was too preoccupied with yourself to concentrate properly.
Still, you could only see the image of yourself driving from the perspective of the passengers seat, one hand on the wheel and the other in your hair as you propped your elbow on the door. This time, though, you could hear the accompanying echo of Logan's voice over the hum of the music you had tuned out.
Is her hair always like that? I like it that way. Pretty.
You swallowed hard, fidgeting with the hair that was between your fingers. It's a compliment - innocent enough, and undeniably kind of sweet. You felt guilty then for probing his thoughts and nearly shook yourself out of it, only to realize the image in Logan's mind was no longer of just your profile. He was thinking about your legs, thighs squished against the seat of the truck.

You nearly choked on your own saliva, clearing your throat at the echo of his voice again and immediately withdrawing yourself from his mind.
"You okay?" Logan spoke aloud, putting a gentle hand on your upper arm.
"Yeah, yeah, I'm fine," you lied, trying with every fiber of your being to just keep all focus on the road. You knew you shouldn't have done that. It was just a thought, though, nothing said aloud to change anything between the two of you, and so you pretended the best you could that you hadn't heard or seen a thing.
About eight hours, a handful of dad rock albums and a stop to switch seats later, you finally pulled into the parking lot of the nearest motel you had found didn't have a highlighted "no vacancy" sign.
"If there's fucking bed bugs in here, I will never let you hear the end of it," you warned from the passenger seat.
"I think you'd talk my ear off till the day I die anyway," he scoffed, shifting the truck into park and pulling the keys from the ignition.
"You won't die for another hundred-something years."
"Exactly my point, honey."
You rolled your eyes and slipped out of the truck as he did, pretending the nickname hadn't made your face burn. You both grabbed your belongings and once inside you looked around the small lobby as Logan checked you in, impressed with how surprisingly clean the place seemed to be.
"Hey, is that okay?"
Logan's voice took your attention from the painting on the wall you'd been inspecting and you raised your eyebrows.
"Huh?
"Uh, there's a room left but it's only got one bed."
Your face dropped and you looked between him and the poor kid behind the counter who already looked nervous as all hell.
"You're kidding."
"We can keep driving, but we've already been on the road all day and I don't think there's another place around here for a good few miles."
He was much more calm than you expected him to be and you exhaled, thinking of the literal pain in the ass caused by sitting in the car for so many hours.
"Ugh, fine."

some low points from the ry*an g*zman interview because i need you all to feel my pain.
when talking about his celibacy (yes he uses that word): "I haven't entertained any interactions with any other females" — gave me the ick 0/10
uses the phrase "a woman's touch," to explain why women are inherently good at interior decorating(?) and that this skill is how women are able to enrich a successful man's life — side note: at no point do they talk about how men enrich women’s lives.
immediately after this the religious imagery takes a left turn and exits my frame of reference, bc instead of just asking "do you think you still have things to work on?" like a normal person, the host says "I want to know what one Thorn is in your flesh." — someone raised more religious than i was needs to chime in on if this is normal christian doctrine or a sign he might be in a cult. (is it a reference to the thorns in jesus' crown?)
ryan makes a weird comment about how "you've seen civilizations built on [a man in love]" — genuinely idk what the fuck this means — but it leads into a tangent about like, men as providers and how "I would do anything for my women."
"peace is key yeah we got enough problems in the world outside the house and so long as I come back to the house and I get peace," — maybe i'm being pedantic but the way he keeps framing woman as belonging in the home is 🚩🚩🚩🚩
"for the next woman I would have in my life I can see that they navigate their their problems and still offer peace to their men." — again 🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩
surprisingly claims he has been to therapy, which assuming is true, idk it worked.
the host: "women may be fighting internal battles you know kind of themselves do you believe that a woman still fighting those battles are able to still bring peace" — because remember ladies, no matter what you're going through your job is to bring peace to your man's home.
there's some more brief gender essentialist bs where ryan talks about how men "like to fix things," but are bad listeners, and how "problems within women are so specific to women that I wouldn't even try and and say that I have a grasp on them."
then the host randomly asks him if he thinks men need to be financially stable before entering a relationship or if dating a broke guy is a way to "present loyalty."
weirdly ryan actually kind of dodges this question, but ends up suggesting social media is a good place to get "great examples of what does and what doesn't seem to work." in relationships — and no. no it isn't.
oh and then he starts talking about conor mcgregor for some reason? and how it's bad he disrespected his wife by stepping outside their marriage — and i mean sure, although infidelity feels second to the rape accusations??
says it's harder for a woman to come into a man's life when he's already established because "now the man has proven to himself that he never needed a woman." — which, interesting given how later he talks about how women need to stop trying to do the independent woman thing.
he also gets weirdly possessive over his daughter at one point. does the classic "God forbid I find out that man disrespects my little baby." — idk, on the surface he talks about how he wants her to know her value, but it seems like he has a pretty limited view of what that value is.
the host drops lore about how she moved out of her parents house at 14/15 and how she had to "stop thinking like a woman and start thinking also like a man," but stay feminine and "know what a man wants and how to cater to that but also still be soft." — i mean good lord, i don't even know where to start 🤢.
this btw is the preamble to ryan's rant about "independent women."
and god the more i read the more i am deeply concerned about the woman hosting (i saw someone earlier say she's 21). this woman is barely an adult and has so much internalised misogyny, talking about how "us women don't know how to direct our emotions." and "in today's generation a lot of men are deprived of even the small things because a lot of women are takers."
this whole interview is utterly bizarre and i feel like it's taken years off my life. like i said earlier, this isn't a normal podcast he got weird on, this is straight up christian propaganda

Disclaimer: I AM JUST AN IDIOT WHO KNOWS DMC LORE AND HAS ACCESS TO TUMBLR...take my opinions with a grain of salt. I would say this was just for fun but it really wasn't. These are all my live thoughts as I watched from like episode 6-8.
Let me just start this out by saying: I am not the kind of fan who typically hates change or something that is new. I like to give things the benefit of the doubt.
It was a huge disappointment in my opinion. I have been a huge fan of DMC for a while and it's still my favorite game series to this day. I was so fucking excited for this anime, I had been waiting YEARS for it. It was just a major let down. I was like "hell yeah, made by the same ppl that made the castlevania anime. This is gonna be great!" As a long time fan ultimately I wanted to give it a chance bc I don't completely hate new things when they come out. But it just makes me so angry.
I wanted a DMC anime. I asked for it. But this...this isn't Devil May Cry. Idk what this is. They completely fucked up Lady's character and made her an unlikeable cop. They just took the "Lady" out of Lady. Who's just demon racist for like...some reason? Like ERM demon bad. But the anime is trying to show "hey maybe human bad" My dislike started off with little things like how Lady doesn't seem to hate her name, how Lady got her eyes from her mom rather than her dad. How Dante got his devil trigger in the anime. How there aren't any of the original voice actors other than Johnny Yong Bosh who plays Nero in the games. I love him he's my favorite voice actor but like he's Nero. I haven't even finished it. I'm watching it as I type this I'm on like episode 6. What the fuck they turned Arkham into a vampire this is so stupid (live Yubel reaction there)...like they tried to turn him into a tragic character...which just like...completely missed the point of his character in my opinion but...pop off ig. He's also dead? I also hate how they just made Lady's personality unlikable and that she swears a lot.
Another issue I have with it is the mispronunciation (is that even a word? ) of Mundus like it's Moon-dus that's how they pronounced it in all the games other than DMC: Devil May Cry which is awful. Honestly the creators just seemed to completely miss the point with all of the characters.
Edit: it is the next day and I'm about to start watching bc last night I got so irritated I couldn't finish it.
I don't like how they're trying to frame Sparda as the bad guy. Like that really pisses me off a lot more than it should. But Sparda was the goat.
I don't know if this is even to be accepted as Canon bc like...it feels like it has nothing to do with the original story like it's its own thing.
Also they changed how they were supposed to get into the demon realm. Bc it wasn't Dante/Vergil's blood that was needed it was Lady's blood. Bc she's the descendant of a sacrificed priestess.
Dante's outfit seems to be his DMC 5 outfit. When I think this takes place before DMC 3??? Like there's no reference if Teme-ni-gru and Lady and Dante didn't meet where they were supposed to.

I hate VP Baines. But Kevin Conroy's voice was actually really refreshing to hear. (R.i.p. you were amazing) But goddamn I hated that religious zealot. I just wish so much attention wasn't brought to him...
This entire show seems like a continuity error and it just makes my brain hurt. And Lady is still brainwashed and barely any development....yay...

Ngl I hate DMC: Devil May Cry but I think it has better writing....and I feel like that's saying alot. Bc it's obvious this is supposed to be a political commentary. And so was DMC: Devil May Cry. Just...sadly I think DMC: Devil May Cry did it better...I'm going to put them both in the same category.
OH WHAT THE FUCK?! NO VERGIL CANNOT CHANGE FROM NELO ANGELO AT WILL. THAT COMPLETELY DISREGARDS HIS ENTIRE CHARACTER.

What I liked: um it wasn't all bad I guess. Like I really liked all the music and the covers of the music. Like I'll admit that Devil Trigger was out of place (bc it's Nero's theme not Dante's) but I liked the way it sounded. I loved Rollin' and I loved Afterlife. I love the animation and visuals it's very smooth. I love the version of Devils Never Cry they used. I really like the art style too. Enzo and Dante's interactions were hilarious. I did actually think the white rabbit was an interesting villain. He was just a victim of the poor writing. Enzo's death actually made me sad bc he's a rat but he was kinda a likeable rat.
I can't actually tell but it kinda sounded like In one of the episodes they were trying to use a different version of Crimson Cloud. I don't know if it actually was or if it just sounded that way. Which again was out of place since V doesn't exist yet to my knowledge.
The reveal of the true Sparda sword was kinda neat too but that's just bc I'm a little biased bc it's one of my favorite swords.
Final thoughts: There are a few things I liked but mostly I hate it and I am severely disappointed. Apparently the creator claims to be a fan of the series but he completely messed it up in my opinion. And I am angry and a little upset about how badly they messed it up. I'm just disappointed. Especially with what they did to Vergil. Bc Vergil is my favorite character.

idk how to put this sorry if this comes off as rude/confrontational I'm not trying to be — when you say stories about forgiveness/reconciliation, do you mean more the type about forgiving & reconciling with family, or more generally (so like including - this isn't the best example but I can't think of any better rn - catra for example? where it's about being trapped in hurting people because of trauma and breaking out of that)? or is the thing you dislike more stories' framing of forgiveness as a moral imperative?
sorry if this doesn't make sense I'm just curious what you think bc you've raised some interesting points and would really like to see you elaborate on them
don't worry you don't come off as rude whatsoever! while i think my points apply broadly to how forgiveness is treated across media (rare actual example of cultural christianity) -- i obviously am not, like, against forgiveness or stories about forgiveness on principle. what i dislike about all the narratives about people forgiving their abusive parents is that:
like you said, it's always framed as a moral imperative. there is always an underlying assumption that forgiving the abuser is the 'right' and 'correct' thing to do, that not doing so would be wrong. this is tremendously insulting to survivors who have every right to not forgive their abusers!
in most of these narratives, the parent barely does shit to be forgiven. there's very often a narrative equivocation, in fact, between parent and child. like, sometimes the parent won't even be expected to apologize -- sometimes, even more grotesquely, both the parent and child apologize for their shared supposed 'wrongdoing'. this is also obviously insulting to survivors, who are not in any way responsible for their abuse or for having a poor relationship with their parents.
the reason why this in particular pisses me off so much is that it mirrors and in turn contributes to the cultural expectation on abuse victims in real life to maintain contact with their abusers, the constant casual pressure from everything from strangers to friends to acquaintances saying 'well, can't you just put it behind you?' or 'look, he's changed' or 'she's your mom' or 'you'll only have one chance to have a relationship with your siblings' or whatever the fuck. the sanctity of the family is a cardinal value across a lot of societies and this sanctity means a constant, neverending societal pressure to bow to sweeping abuse under the rug. i've seen many people i care about struggle deeply with feeling obligated to maintain relationships with family members who treat them like shit and make htem miserable every time they interact bc of exactly these sorts of sentiments being everpresent in their cultural environment. & these narratives always paint that sort of pressure as being well-founded and fair and ultimately for the better, which is absolutely repellent to me.
so, yeah. i am not against narratives where an abusive person actually confronts their actions and changes and repairs that relationship (that's another fucking thing, these narratives always put the onus and responsiblity on the character who was abused to forgive rather than on the abuser to earn forgiveness, just like in real life familial abuse victims are always fucking expected to be the ones to repair the relationship). i think such narratives can be powerful and compelling and explore questions of what the value of 'forgiveness' or 'redemption' even are, as well as dispel the mystique and exceptionalism often attributed to the 'abuser' as a holistic malevolent figure that can be cleanly separated from every other parent/grandparent/sibling/etc.
what i'm against is narratives where someone who is abused has their feelings delegitimized -- their rage is wrong, counterproductive, they need to let go and move on, they need to forgive their abusers and let them back int otheir lives because oh, they did something wrong too or oh, their abuser had a difficult life, or whatever the fuck. to which the answer should be a flat -- no. they don't. all the more power to people who choose to do that if that's what makes them happiest and safest but absolutely nobody has a moral obligation or need to forgive an abusive family member. obviously i am exaggerating slightly when i say every abusive parent subplot should end with the parent being killed with hammers, but i'm using the hammer murder as a synechdoche for a narrative treating an abuse victim's antipathy towards their abuser as something legitimate and justified and obviously reasonable rather than a flaw or something they need to move past.

Wu simply doesn't care his more focused on the team staying together and wondering how Kai was able ta become one with the sea his also the one who gave Nya the okay ta keep Kai in that jar
Afterwards he keeps bugging Kai on how he did it pushing Kai more than the others trying ta figure it out
Pixal:
She does care but she wasn't close with Kai she's focused more on helping Zane through it so Pixal isn't able ta acknowledge her own sadness she almost punched Nya seeing her having Kai in a jar that was her first ever reaction for herself during this time frame
Afterwards when Kai is back she hovers it isn't very noticeable but she is Pixal will always keep tabs on Kai as if waiting for him ta disappear again
Jay:
Like Pixal his foucsed on helping Nya but he can't hide his emotions his hurt by this all he feels horrible that Kai did it and seeing how Nya is handling it makes it worse
Afterwards Jay always keeps jars away from Kai's view he isn't sure if it'll upset Kai seeing any after what Nya did but his scared it will
Cole:
Now Cole was tricky but he definitely isn't handling it well his angry at Benthomaar for telling Nya bout it angry at Kai for doing this but mostly angry at himself for not being there ta stop Kai
Afterwards Cole def hovers over Kai making sure his safe he has a habit of dragging Kai out ta spar just so he knows the other is really here he has a lot of drawings of Kai
Zane:
Zane does shut off his emotions he can't handle Kai being gone it doesn't stop him from being angry the first time Nya shows Kai in that jar he had ta be turned off bc he was actually going ta hurt Nya
Afterwards Zane has a habit of checking on Kai as he sleeps in fact Zane will watch Kai sleep the other doesn't mind as long as his eyes aren't glowing
Ray & Maya:
Oh boy they are so messed up they just barely got back ta their kids and building their relationship up and then bam their son is the sea the two cling ta Nya a little ta much
Afterwards they both dote on Kai a lot who enjoys it having his parents love again makes being "human" again easier ta deal with
Lloyd:
Lloyd is...he ended up sleeping in Kai's bed a lot scared he'll forget what Kai smelt like his scared that Kai won't ever come back he also actually did hurt Nya when he saw what she's done
Afterwards let's just say Lloyd didn't let Nya be alone with Kai for awhile he clings ta Kai afraid ta let go
Nya:
.....she put Kai in a fucking jar so that's her reaction ta it all
Afterwards Nya isn't doing okay still but she's so overjoyed Kai is back though she understands why the others are upset with her back then

and I had to clip out Lando's grimace and little disagreeing nod when Andrea brings up Oscar's penalty (which Oscar was in agreement with as well) bc no !! Lando will not agree, even when Oscar brings it up later !! and it made me think of this post race where Oscar had a visible spasm when Andrea brought up Lando in a similar way
but then Lando AHEM expressing his displeasure with that gesture and Oscar desperately trying not to laugh even when Lando keeps trying to make him break - then that little grin up at Andrea !!
and like I've got to make special notice of how utterly radiant Lando is when he's watching Oscar speak - the way the whole rotten race has completely fallen away and you wouldn't know any of it had happened because his face has that sweet, open and proud look that Lando's developed since last season… it's like, he just had to work out how Oscar fit and how Lando needed to grow and take on this new role and now he looks at and reacts to Oscar with this proprietariness. and I love how here it's Lando sat in the executive chair, in the center of the frame, and Oscar is perched on the table kicking his little interlocked feet with his bare legs and his body turned fully toward Lando and therefore twisting slightly to address the camera. it's a full switch of power to Lando feeling more at peace with his race than Oscar and his boy very much struggling to get through it.
bc Oscar may be able to anticipate and readily accommodate Lando's everyday needs and adore him when he's bratty and fussy - but Oscar also spent pretty much his whole racing career as a fan of Lando and Lando has years of experience on him and is the established driver in the team. so the fact that they have this ability and nuance to change up who needs what at any given time is just… dear to me. and idk just the way their dynamic and their roles are so uniquely developed and customized by and for each other ?? it's not baby brother/big brother and it's not equals/rivals and definitely not less talented/more talented. in every single post race they're unified in their response and they do different things to help each other out. then they share flights home and they're fully reset for the next race. they don't let the media get in and they don't even play up for fans at all. like. it's exclusively about taking care of each other and looking after what they've got y'know?? ;__;

so i had the bright idea of rewatching s1 today whilst im working from home, now knowing what i know about s2, and so i can ruminate a little more on s1 with the additional context. ive barely made it past five minutes
im pretty sure ive gotten most of the frames accurate from this bit, and im sure it might just be a bit of demonstrative cinematography (which ya know, *chefs kiss*) but at the same time i love going into full year 9 english teacher mode about this shit, and i think there is something to comment on (which someone already might have done but w/e). in any case, this bit of dialogue is very noticeably layered with shots of crowley and aziraphale, but intercut with the shots of adam facing down the lion:

like, i can't help but feel that there is some symmetry in this and either other people have spotted it and im very behind, OR we havent spotted it and s2 spoilers have helped unlock it✨
so who is meant to be who here? for my money it would be that adam is mirroring aziraphale, and eve is mirroring crowley - in so much that at a really shallow level, aziraphale is a platoon leader, a guardian, fought in the war etc. crowley, regardless of his rank, is a starmaker, and let's face it the boy has the structural integrity of a strand of dried linguine. so we could look at it on that level (ignore the lion for the moment ill sort of explain that if it isn't already obvious)
but also we now know that this scene is not their first meeting, and that aziraphale and crowley do in fact remember each other and know that they have met, and in aziraphale's case is probably the teeniest bit shy bc damn heart eyes as an angel, heart eyes as a demon 🥵 but my point is that this is after the fall. after (as far as crowley tells it) crowley fell for 'just ask[ing] questions", and "just hung around the wrong people".
now i have my thoughts on why crowley fell: tldr because it would require another post - both reasons he gave above are bullshit and obvs conflict with each other, so i think that he doesn't actually know why he fell and has just guessed his transgressions so he can rationalise it, that god actually never had an issue with him asking questions, and instead it was actually god's plan to make him fall so he could represent the 'evil' side of free will on earth, as aziraphale's counterpart, and essentially ensure that humankind stays eternally 'in balance'
ANYWAY so the fact that in the lion sequence, 'crowley' is being shielded by 'aziraphale' against an unknown entity; but does this mirror a flashback, or is it foreshadowing? again, id put my bets on the former visually, but the latter... lyrically? idk the word but regardless take the dialogue:
"What if I did the right thing;
with the whole 'eat the apple business'?
A demon can get into a lot of trouble;
for doing the right thing."
so let's rephrase this:
"Was it the right decision to fall;
was I right to choose this for myself?
to choose the right to choose?
Because i feel like i could live to regret it."
so is crowley in essence already asking if aziraphale is on his side? is he asking if falling was the right thing, the good thing, to do (regardless of whether god gave him any choice in the matter)? But was he given the choice, first true free will? did aziraphale try to protect him during the fall, so crowley could get out in time (but ultimately fail? or at least bought Crowley enough time to find a back staircase and fall gently and peacefully, 'saunter vaguely downwards'?), and then get assigned to earth to be the 'good' side of the coin for humanity?
and is crowley asking if aziraphale will continue to be with him? in whatever romantic, platonic, acquaintance context you want - is he asking aziraphale if aziraphale will fight for him again, for them both? aziraphale made his decision, enacted his free will, in giving the humans a sword, and thus brought the concept of war and horror to earth, even if that was never his intention - so now swordless, and now only condemned to watch humanity as it strides out on its own (or was this the plan all along?👀), is aziraphale willing to do it? does he have the power, the strength, the will? would he stretch his finger over the line to fight on their side?
maybe im asking the wrong kind of questions, but all ill say is that in the above sequence? at the end of the dialogue? adam kills the lion.
i think 'their side' began in the job minisode, yes maybe, but also maybe the idea of it, the understanding of it, was planted here.

Unpopular opinion but I think Jyn wouldn’t want to be involved in this situation at all unless Bix came back after at least like 3 or 4 years, giving her time to be in a long relationship with Cassian and all. If she just like appeared in Yavin on the next month or something Jyn would be out of this mess lmfao good luck to Cassian I guess
LMAO i dont think jyn would be out because like cassian offered her a home and stuck around when things got bad like no one else ever had, BUT i also don't think they'd be together a month in under ANY circumstances. it would probably give jyn real pause though, like ??? the fuck you mean you lost everything??? cassian would be GOING THROUGH IT LOL because he's totally unhinged for this woman but like he does have a real history with bix, even if its obviously over, and that i am sure would be a shit place to be with a fucking SURPRISE BABY in the middle of a newly HOT WAR 😭😭 i dont think bix would actually show up like that bc that would defeat the entire purpose of that ridiculous choice so
i do think if a month after scarif bix showed up with a fucking baby and the expectation that they'd get to play family and pickup where they left off, jyn would probably attempt to kill whatever blossoming feelings that were developing. it wouldn't be pretty and i don't think in that circumstance jyn would everrrr be friends with bix. its not about pitting women against each other, its about the very real pain that would cause her but also that it would definitely cause cassian.
like i think it is a laudable goal to avoid slipping into misogynistic missus and the ex toxicity and cattiness but i think sometimes we don't take into account that it isn't always about jealousy or internalized misogyny that hinders friendship between two women who have had relationships with the same man/partner at different times in his/their life.
sometimes its just the circumstances of the prior relationship. it would be pretty hard for me to like a woman who did what bix did to a partner of mine. full stop, i would find it incredibly selfish and cruel. and i dont even HAVE the trauma that jyn does surrounded abandonment and absent/dead parents.
like full stop i think it is despicable to leave a partner like bix did. its why its so off-putting to me that its framed as a grand romantic gesture, or a great sacrifice when in reality it feels like she was leaving her partner right when he needed her most. when things got bad. which is precisely why i think jyn WOULDN'T leave him to deal with bix and the baby himself. even as friends with developing feelings, i think she'd still want to hold onto that friendship.
so yeah i also don't see cassian handling it very well. this is why in the fix it thing im working on, i have completely erased the entire scene and the baby as well because LOL no way bix caleen is bringing a baby into a war as an undocumented woman, nor is she gonna have that kid on the planet where she was sexually assaulted and then her friend was murdered. aint no way in hell. unless she is a total 🤡
i agree though it would be way easier for them all if bix reached out after the war. they probably both would have completely moved on, which would mean far less dogshit to sift through. distance makes things easier so i can see that. but i could see co-parenting being a lot easier without all the layers of mess that would be there a month in.
what i kinda cant help wondering is what vel would be doing? you know vel would adore jyn. she is cassian's friend first and foremost imo even though we BARELY FUCKING SEE IT LOL and i cannot imagine she would be opposed to the way that jyn has lit that fire under cassian's ass that vel always wanted to see from the decoy andor!cassian(which! loool omg dont even get me STARTED ON HIS LACK OF COMMITMENT TO THE CAUSE)

YOU MENTIONED ACELU MODERN/GANG AU. but what about — I know it’s cursed but please listen — supernatural AU? I don’t mean like the entire thing (monster hunting maybe, but not the entire angel/demons plot) but just consider the vibes of the first two seasons?? The “road-trip” thing. Struggling to get by (I’m such a huge sucker for “Ace struggling to make ends meet but he always makes sure Luffy gets food and clothes even if it means he’s not eating as much himself”-dynamic in modern AUs. God). Sleeping in shitty motels + having to share the bed more often than not. Taking care of each other’s wounds in dimly-lit, dirty bathrooms. The general, ever-present worry of how things are going to be in the future or the terrifying scenario when one of them doesn’t make it (except Ace just worries about Luffy, bc of course he doesn’t consider a future where he lives and Luffy doesn’t. Neither of them can think about it too long either way bc it makes their brains shut down). They’re blood-brothers, they think of each other like that, they call each other that except. Taking physical comfort from each other is also a thing, because that’s what they’ve been doing all their lives, because there’s always been just them, and it’s all they ever had. They kiss and sleep together, bare skin pressed against bare skin because it’s always been like this, and it doesn’t feel the same with anyone else (mostly on Ace’s side, because he did try — with barmaids, waitresses, men in shady bars, because he felt responsible for Luffy’s upbringing and well-being and it felt like an older sibling thing to set and maintain appropriate boundaries. But nothing ever compared to Luffy, even in the slightest). Both of them having to play so many social roles they kind of start blending into one another (because again, there was never really anyone around long enough to fill them in for them) - bc yeah they’re siblings, but. They’re also friends except it goes way beyond that. Ace, as the older one, has been Luffy’s caretaker too, he had to think and plan ahead for them both. But there were times when Ace was hurt they the caretaking role became reversed and Luffy had to take on all the responsibilities, until Ace recovered. Obviously none of it is how a healthy sibling relationship should look like, but god, I’m just soooo weak for the developing co-dependency, especially in scenarios where clearly unhealthy/potentially harmful behavior becomes a source of physical/emotional comfort (and tbh I’m pretty sure it also translates well into in-canon Ace/Lu because they didn’t really have anyone else either, for a couple of years in their lives. And Luffy needs social interaction like he needs food and sleep).
Oh man, anon, I was shipping and reading smut for Wincest like WILD back in the day, so. This AU is perfect. I'm eating up all the details of it just being the two of them, and a car, and a map. On a good day they'll get to jam out to music for a few hours on the road before pulling into a diner, and Ace splurges on treating him and Luffy to a meal of steak, burgers, shakes and pie.
But on a bad day. They get out of a rough fight, Ace with a nasty gash down his chest but they can't get help between all their papers being forged and being wanted for a crime they were framed for anyway. So for once Luffy drives them back to the motel, and sets Ace up in the tiny bathroom tub to clean out the wound and patch it up. The whole time they're just quietly saying stuff to each other like "thank you. you didn't have to take that hit for me. it saved my life" and "you're the only reason i do any of this. nothing else matters." "you matter. it's always been just you and me, right? what would I do without you?" and then... idk MaybeTheyHave"Thank God You're Alive"Sex or something who can say?? you know???
but omg yeah I LIVE for some codependency in my ships. I do have this weird thing where whenever I write headcanons it's like I'm in denial. like, I can't totally commit to calling it unhealthy even though it totally is, bc.... they're happy together!! Maybe they learn to accept help when they need it from some kind of Uncle Bobby figure (Jinbei?? Rayleigh??). but when it comes down to it, they only really care about staying with each other and keeping their brother safe.
I'm not really sure what's up with me today but I'm sort of in a horny mood so. I'm still thinking about what you typed with "They kiss and sleep together, bare skin pressed against bare skin because it’s always been like this," and I know you probably meant literal sleeping together. But I love thinking about the slippery slope Ace and Luffy took in the AU from "pressing each other close for comfort when they're shaken" to "Luffy noticing how good it feels when Ace holds him and Ace unable to stop his eyes from lingering on Luffy's lips" to "one time in the dead of night in the hotel, their breaths are mingling and their mouths are almost touching until, it isn't 'almost' anymore. and then somehow ace is on top of luffy and the orange glow of the streetlight outside is falling on where their arms are wrapped around each other. and even though that night should have been shocking, what they can't admit out loud is that it felt completely natural. it's just another part of everything that they are to each other, and no one else needs to understand this, either."
ANYWAY UH I can. talk about other aspects of this AU since I'm sure there were other things you meant to focus on but uh. I was in a mood. oops!

HELLO FRIEND SCREAMS thank you so much you know how meaningful it is that people like. Like my writing and engage with it and you've been so sosososo incredibly sweet. Sorry yours took the longest, I was trying to think of something to say bc apparently there's a word limit on these things. Boo. I would totally do a total annotated doc otherwise bc im cringe but i went over like a LOT of the references stuff in Part 1, Part 2, Part 3 which honestly. Might be a lot of the process.
Imma see if I have any other notes off the top of my head:
THE POSTER: ok, so. The WEAKNESS IS PAIN LEAVING THE BODY poster. Obviously that's a bit of an ironic joke. That wasn't even really supposed to be there. I'm realizing i kept in the draft the fact that Jace makes the picture frames on Porter's desk rattle. And actually, during the implied Cassandra Divine Intervention scene where the poster falls, was originally supposed to be one of the pictures on the desk. I... couldn't justify it. I was like. idk whats weird n whats not to have as a framed picture on your desk if you're a teacher.
I'm like. Genuinely I think one of my biggest flaws as a writer is sensory detail, description, like maintaining characters geography w/in a space. King of white wall syndrome. At the bare minimum, I do think there's this kinda funny old vs. new feeling regarding Jace's belongings, his home, etc. Or like. I guess not kitsch but like something mass market vs. very old and traditional. Like the couch in my head like something small, ugly and modern, like very minimalist and kinda uncomfortable, and something a lot of people would own. But there's also the grandfather clock in the corner—to me that's also something that was passed down like the brooch. The brooch, moon n stars, obviously n heirloom—he's has like old roots in fallinel, his family is of Galicaean faith. But also The brooch is described in the same scene as the mug Porter keeps, and it's the most generic millenial like mass market slogan thing you've ever seen. There's this like. Presence of his family's influence even if he doesn't speak to them. But also a life that's. Kinda on autopilot.
I.... i always feel like I'm patting myself on the back abt this. I do really like the Detect magic + Teleport meld. I think it was clever. I'm telling myself that's ok to say. Mainly b/c it was a good solution to two problems. And a little bit b/c I think it's romantic to rip through space and time for someone. Again, I keep joking that he loved Porter to the point of invention (something i only feel self congratulatory about bc he did it in canon first).
Anyway. I was struggling SO HARD on what to do about these flashback scenes and i've said this before but like they were so close to being on the cutting room floor. I just felt like i couldn't justify them in something that was meant to be kinda... fun? Haha. "fun" IYWD. As if. The Detect thoughts i think helped with what to do about inserting those flashbacks, which i think helped resolve my problem of them feeling pointless b/c its like. It's not for our benefit, it's literally the memories weighing on Porter at like all times. They hang over everything.
The Teleport part was bc i was like. Ok. This is the biting maiming killing dropping during sex couple. If there's a question of "you can do anything you want to me", there HAS to be an escalation of stakes. But also this doesn't feel like a story that necessitates like. A lot of violence in their kinkplay I guess? When there's so much else going on, there's so much like about mourning and the violence already inflicted on Jace twofold that's actually a source of guilt for his horrible evil loser boyfriend porter. I already went through a LOT of contrivance just to get them into Porter's office (i think the fucking in porter's office jokes are fun, sue me), but I also was like. Ok. I think I need to go bigger by going smaller. If he changes the spell to rip through time, there's this like—doubling that makes it so on some level they're basically recreating their first time. Which i think makes the kinda silly vanilla (with little bit of mind reading lol) mundanity of that last part hopefully work
Fun Fact: the "I actually kinda miss you, aint that peculiar" "I'm right here" scene is the first one I wrote. It was basically the basis for everything. As it existed then, it was wayyyyy different tho. The tone was actually a lot more hostile. The patching up injuries thing actually came in way later and i was super embarrassed bc i was like that's so cliche but now i like it b/c i think there's such a Ratgrinders haunt the narrative thing about it. A Jace Cares and that's the thesis of Porter's grief thing about it.
The "there it is, the line" "you're so weird" into he never wants porter to stop saying mystifying things to him. Like. Completely changed the trajectory of what was going on almost by accident. Like. It literally wasn't until that moment that i was like. Oh. Oh. He wants porter to stay. B/c like
I see so much of the 1st half of the story as Jace like. Using Porter's want for him as a way to satisfy his own wants and needs. He wants pleasure after denying himself. But he also needs to live. I keep saying he's using sex as a tool b/c i really think he is—he wants to be so good porter can never live without him. And on level one, that's about making sure he's indispensible. Making sure he stays alive. But the second thing thats buried under there is more of a want—for Porter to stay with him. And that changed it from Jace actually fighting to have the upper hand and in some ways even getting Porter on the back foot to it being like. Actual desperation.
How many Jaces are in this story? Good question. Pre and post shatterstar for sure, but also we only see Pre in flashbacks so they're more like Porter's perception of pre. The clones are implied but do not make an appearance. And obviously after the first 5, the other jaces w/in 8 Jace thesis are more concepts in people's heads (and also one of them is 25). The Jace of Porter's memory is definitely there. The Jace Porter thought he would get after the shatterstar also haunts the scene. too. It's jaces all the way down.
Idk if it makes sense my logic behind this but. There's Porter complimenting Jace when he's really raw and vulnerable and messy and its like. Jace's response is that it's unfair. And b/c there's so much talk abt justice and unfair in FHJY i was like. Can. there be an instance in which something is unfair in a good way? Like. In that you're the one being treated unfairly at the expense of everyone else. Like. almost like. Sometimes you can be unfair in that you're easier on your friend than you might be on someone else. That's not fair, but like. That's human. Like if something is unfair you might be getting an advantage on something you didn't earn. But you don't have to earn love, but the fact that Jace didn't have to work for it, he feels like he's getting something too easily. It's unfair. In a good way.
I've said this before but I do think Porter is able to come to some sort of synthesis about Jace. And that he was maybe able to even conceive of the totality of him b/c of how the flashbacks are laid out. Like. in the first one he's unpalatable and angry and a disappointment to the memory of Jace that Porter imagined. In the second one he's sort of perfect, the scene too short and precious and romanticized to be muddied by real flaws in his mundanity and simplicity. And in the last one, Jace is mundane, flawed, overworked, overly familiar with his students, willing to play favorites, but also empathetic, good at making connections, ultimately well meaning and trying his best. Someone real, that's Porter's favorite. It's up to interpretation i think. esp bc like.
Counterpoint: I think you could also read that. Porter seems to love this Jace more the way a god loves their creation than the way a man loves another man. Like. yeah they're suckin n fuckin but also Porter being in to the fact that jace is "so trusting" is very. Helio always has a plan and i let him take the wheel, no? He's moved by Jace's devotion. Jace will take that tho. He'll take it all.
Final point: if brennan says that anything his PCs do can become fair game for him, then same for me. If Adaine n Aelwyn can use dimension door to go to her parents house / aelwyn's apartment despite the distance, that's fair game for me to misuse it < 3. (i just think if i'd allowed for the teleport it would've made way more sense to go to someone's house. And llike. that's no fun at all

i'm gonna release my baby pix from the vault. he's definitely... EVOLVED as time as gone on.
he was originally supposed to be a self insert character to go alongside pitt from the kid icarus games (i never played them but pitt is my favorite character to play in smash and the idea for pix came around this similar time frame. i was like 12-13 at the time probably). back in the day pix was a gyal bc i thought i was, but whaddya know, just like chidori (who was originally a self insert for kid me) he ended up turning transmasc LMAO.
i actually decided to revamp pix's backstory thing recently... as in last year? so i'll kinda post that long ass blurb:
grew up in a church and decided they were to become a cleric. trained and put everything they had towards it and were sent on a quest along with some idk others for some divine purpose? but they experienced hardships and their gods will became harder and harder to discern. they saw horrors and could do nothing for the way of their god forbade them from intervening. finally pix saw the destruction of a village and their companions perished all to get an old sacred artifact of their god. that was what the quest was about. the god had used pix as a conduit for their wishes and revealed themselves to be a spurned god and pix just idk released them from their prison ? and pix kind of has a mental break and the god basically leaves them for dead etc etc. but pix’s desire for revenge is heard by their dead/dying companions and they vow if they will give them the strength they will hunt down that god and kill them. pix awakens in a hospital or with a healer or something whatever. they were the lone survivor of the attack but no one knows their hand in helping it happen. the light is gone from their eyes but they realize this is their chance they’ve been granted to make amends. so they switch from a cleric to a paladin -> their holy oath binding them to those of the dead city and their old companions. they start to train, become colder, get older, the only thing they think about is to kill that god tm. they cut down any clerics or worshippers of that god they find… their mental state gets worse and worse and all they can think of is vengeance. etc etc. annnnnnnd idk 🤔 eventually i'm assuming that they'll discover gender somewhere along the way and also get revenge on that god probably but idk he also deserves love and to fucking Sleep.
anyway pix transitioning from she > they > trans masc rage is actually important to me. bc i am full of rage.
also also, i need to make it less. dnd. y. cuz i like dnd as a whole and concept but i only make dnd adjacent things out of jealousy for people who can actually have campaigns and friends to do them with (ik i'm not cut out for it but that doesn't stop me from feeling left out anyway) so dnd is a good jumping off point, but i'd like to imbue more of my own worldbuilding and ideals into it.
but yeah that's pix he's doing his best probably. naive -> trauma -> antihero -> borderline villain route is basically the vibe

About this post, I’m assuming?
I mean I already think that element is poorly handled in canon. Stories need to be dynamic. The betrayal isn’t going to hit very hard if she isn’t allowed to be taken with him and well… she barely is lol.
I read the S&B chapters where she runs away from the Little Palace just the other day bc of my discord read along and it’s really funny how gung ho she is about having her worldview upended, being on the run from the second most powerful man in her country, who she at least was developing some sort of romantic relationship with. She hardly has any feelings about it!
And considering that it’s hardly a twist at all that the immortal goth guy who doesn’t have a name is evil, I’d argue that the interpersonal betrayal is the most important aspect to get right.
I enjoy TGT from the context of being an existing fan of Phantom of the Opera and Interview with the Vampire. The particular trajectory of a consuming mentor and protege dynamic that devolves, and eventually results in the protege overtaking the mentor and causing their death in some way is the main draw for me. And I think that initial vulnerability and naivety is necessary for the later growth to happen or feel impactful.
So all that being said, I think the canon book barely managed to pull off that aspect. Having her even less affected would probably just break the book unless it’s restructured drastically in some way.
I think you probably could reconfigure things to make it work, but for example, the twist that he means to magically enslave her has no real reason to be so late in the game or to be introduced at the highest point in their relationship. There’d be no point in spending half the book building up her dynamic with him or all of the protection and safety the Little Palace (his domain) conditionally offers.
You’d need an entirely new linchpin for the story and I’m not entirely sure what that would be. I think a plausible twist would be just making the Darkling well meaning but that’s rather simplistic and I think he’s a fun character! I wouldn’t want him too changed. I’d instead probably frame him as like a controlled schemer. And maybe there can be a later twist that like… oh he’s insane. The surprise can be his investment and obsession with a sun summoner, that he has a personal obsession rather than just wanting her as a pawn. I’d remove the initial romance entirely.
The first half of the book could be building up just how awful the monarchy is. And painting the Darkling and the Little Palace as an extension of and enforcers of that evil but who do at least offer some protection for Grisha. Where the beat of her being taken to the Little Palace itself as her being essentially forced into serving the King. (In this case I’d lean more on the Second Army as an army) And then the real midpoint twist is the coup plan that she is informed of when she tries to use the Winter Fete as a distraction to escape…. maybe even with Mal ugh. who is conveniently present at that point lol. There would need to be some sense of stakes, some eventual outcome the King is planning that she doesn’t like, to keep some momentum going since we’re ignoring the amplifier stuff for now but idk. I’d also nix the plotline about her not being able to summon because oh Mal. Maybe an alliance with Fjerda that Alina is freaked out about.
So yeah I think Mal shows up— in this instance because we’re building up untrustworthy Darkling, I’d say she probably has to learn that her correspondence is being intercepted and to get around that somehow to get word to him to try to help her. She needs to be afraid in the Little Palace and aware of how much scheming is going on everywhere. So they plan to run. But they get immediately caught by the Darkling’s guard. And he decides to deal with this personally— even though in this scenario they probably haven’t spoken since the trip to Os Alta. And he’s like you could run right now and aBaNdOn YoUr CoUnTrY… or you can help us overthrow the king.
I’d probably also want more focus on her relationship with Genya and Zoya, and here is where they both show up too to try to convince her. Zoya more whole heartedly, while Genya seems hesitant, but Alina doesn’t notice that at the time, and her friends’ vouching for this cause sways her. Mal is like fucking dumbfounded that she is seriously considering this, and maybe they fight about that. But the Fjerda alliance thing is bad (idk roll with it) so Alina decides she wants in on the coup. Maybe here Morozova’s amplifiers are introduced for the first time and they all embark on the hunting trip. It’s a Very Official Thing.
But things are weird and the Darkling has still been very untrustworthy and shady this entire time! Maybe he’s like paying her more attention now because she’s an “ally” now, but it’s actually because he’s just obsessed. Though Alina is trying to see things Genya’s way and to think that perhaps she’s at least sided with the lesser of two evils, she’s still perturbed. Maybe right as she’s about to be convinced that He’s Not So Bad After All we get the Act III twist where she realizes that oh. oh he has a little sun summoner shrine and has been reading all of her letters and is like totally obsessed with her and thinks they’re going to be soulmates 5ever. This scene probably happens on the tail end of him like creepily inviting her to dine with him alone in an obligatory fancy dress (idk the tents in Kribirsk were pretty fancy I think they can support a creepy villain dinner scene) And the vibes are very concerning but he’s trying to play it cool then she idk sneaks around in his personal stuff. Alina tries to run again with help from Zoya and Genya. But Zoya leads the Darkling to her— or if we’re ignoring the magic system rules literally puts the collar on her. Genya seems green about the gills about the entire thing but for the moment stands by.
He can still make her beg, threaten her life etc bc she ran away. This makes him kissing her at this point even creepier because they have NO relationship but I think that’s actually great. I’m happy about this 😂
Alina can also have the same/a similar confrontation with Genya as in the book.
Because I have already made so many changes, I would say Mal does get fed to volcra as planned and that there’s no mercy twist that gives Alina her power back. Maybe she has to knock the Darkling out, or surprise, Zoya did bc Novokribirsk happened and killed her aunt. And that gives Alina a chance to flee with her, leaving the Darkling to the volcra as per canon.
Well. I planned an entirely new book lol. This is all highly subjective and you could change things in any number of ways, but yeah I hope this kind of illustrates how things would need to be very different at all if a central element like that is removed.
If the rest of the book is changed, I could like it. I think the hypothetical version I just built sounds pretty fun/is tailored to my specific interests because I put it together lmao. But if you just removed her naivety and changed nothing else then… that would be supremely boring and I would not care about it.

yes you are so right i know exactly what you mean! the way i've phrased it is just "purpled is too swag to be manipulated". like when quackity blew up his UFO, and left him with the two choices of either join las nevadas or kill quackity, purpled chose a third option, which was to just leave. since the start, he's taken no shit and not fallen to quackity's attempts at manipulation, but he does sometimes pretend to do so for the sake of manipulating quackity back. in the stream where he does join las nevadas, his deal with quackity to join las nevadas was so much better for him than the deals quackity made with the others. he didn't even have to sign a contract! and the entire time, he was fully aware of quackity's attempts to manipulate him and didn't fall for any of them. quackity tried to frame it as "joining las nevadas is the only way to make a legacy for yourself" but purpled, again, did not fall for his tactics. he was hurt and traumatized by the destruction of the UFO, sure, but he was not manipulated.
also, it was heavily implied that ever since he joined, he was taking notes on las nevadas and how to gain power there. his character is incredibly cunning, intelligent, and strategic. he was nice to the other citizens, befriended them, but didn't get too close. he manipulated slimecicle to get information on quackity. at the very first stream where he joins, he asks for a plot of land behind the casino, because he has "an idea in mind that would need a lot of land, and that's the only place i can see it". since the start, he's been thinking of plans to secure his legacy and fuck over quackity at the same time.
first he tried to gain political power, but after realizing that wouldn't work, he came up with a plan to get the most powerful item on the server from quackity. and after that plan fell through a bit, he just modified his plan so he could get revenge. him killing charlie wasn't just a random act of lashing out against his "abuser/manipulator", it was Plan C, it was planned out extensively, it was smart.
i also think a lot of it stems from him being grouped with benchtrio as the "manipulated minors" and the stereotyping of his character as "oh he's a minor, therefore he must also be manipulated". like he seemed like the type to be easily manipulated, because he had been alone with no human contact for so long, but quackity underestimated him. because purpled is too cynical and smart to get manipulated easily, and most of what him getting "manipulated" is him playing 5d chess and pretending to be manipulated so he can lay out his plan to get a legacy.
