I know I’ve spoken about it before, about the Fates having specific beef with Jason given how many times they tried to kill him, but I’m so amused today thinking about the comedy angle of the Fates constantly cutting Jason’s red string and - usually not even himself - but his friends just running in to hastily tie the two ends back together before sauntering off hands in their pockets and whistling like nothing happened so this kid just can’t die. And how annoyed these three old crones must be every time they look back and see it re-tied and having to wait for another deadly set up to cut his string again and just having to hope this one sticks.

He gets fried seeing Juno’s true form, and the Fates are giggling with their scissors ready “snippety snip”, and cut his string.

They look back and Piper is there tying the ends together blinking at them simply “I’m sorry, but I haven’t had my kiss yet. You’ll have to wait.”

Damn. So then the suitors nail him, and he’s dying from that slowly. “Snippety snip snip.”

And they look back and Jason’s guiltily tying off the ends after curing himself, giving them the full puppy eyes treatment “I haven’t had grandkids yet.”

For shit’s sake. So they have to wait and finally the final battle comes around and they know he’s going to have to sacrifice himself to take down Gaia. He’s poised to do so, he made up his mind a long time ago, he’s well on his way - “Snippety snip snip snip” and -

Leo’s double knotting the ends insistently. “I’m sorry, he’s just too pretty to die. I haven’t had my kiss yet.”

At this point I’m genuinely convinced Jason only needed glasses halfway through HoO out the blue like that because the Fates had gotten desperate and decided to worsen his eyesight hoping he’d just walk himself off a cliff or onto somebody’s sword accidentally.

Pointing wildly to this scene as I repeat that Jason’s fatal flaw isn’t indecision, it’s duty.

The reason Jason is indecisive isn’t that he has two options that he considers equal. He wants to go back to CHB with Leo and Piper. He feels guilty leaving Reyna, but the thought of returning to New Rome as praetor only fills him with dread. Those aren’t equal options.

Jason knows what he wants. It’s to be with Piper and Leo. The reason he’s unable to admit this (even to himself) is that he thinks he isn’t allowed to want this because it would mean choosing his personhood over his duty to New Rome, and that isn’t acceptable.

Also shoutout to the fact that he considers Piper and Leo completely equal factors in this situation. Whether you ship him with either of them, they’re both his people and they’re equally important to him. Romantic love isn’t inherently more valuable than platonic love, and that is so, so important actually.

After the spell breaks and Piper and Jason break up, Jason is now paranoid everytime someone says they love him (even in a platonic sense) because what if this is another trick?

He doesn't think he can handle it if he believes again for it to not be true.

leo and piper except they're the only ones who showed up to jason's funeral. nico was overwhelmed with grief, percy and annabeth with guilt, frank and hazel busied themselves with work to avoid thinking about it, and reyna couldn't bear it.

but leo and piper showed. they showed with funeral clothes and his favorite flowers, a basket of his favorite things to lay beside him tombstone. they spoke even though it was to one another. they told stories, no one else would hear. they cried with memories created in a short amount of time with a friendship based off fabricated memories. yet they loved him deeply. piper, as a friend. and leo, as something that could've been more.

they sat at his grave for hours and hours. leaning against the stone with exhaustion as they talked and talked.

tears only began to pour and streamed like a thunderstorm when thalia arrived and pulled them into an embrace. they each became closer after that.

Honestly I feel like people forget that despite not being meant for each other, there was a time Jason was completely in love with Piper. During the battle against the giants, the only thing that kept him going was a mental image of him and Piper growing old together with kids. And he knew it wasn't a prophecy but he still fought because he wanted that future. He wanted to live happily WITH PIPER. Like, yeah, their relationship wasn't meant to last and they were wayyyy better off as friends, but he was in love with her.

I notice people saying the relationship wasn't good (which fair) but they ignore that scene

it's not just that scene, it's collectively many from the books which shows that Jason indeed loved Piper. though their relationship wasn't meant to last, it didn't mean that it was bad or toxic. they loved each other, understood each other (atleast tried to). it was not a complete disappointment or anything like that.

Honestly, people blaming Jason for breaking Reyna's heart is silly as hell, considering he never actually dated her.

Reyna just had the misconception that they would end up together, fueled by the burning desire to prove Venus wrong. She made a move on Percy too, so it's not like she really loved Jason.

No, I'm not criticizing Reyna – she's perfect, she's human. We just forget that those characters are actually teenagers, and should be allowed to act like them too. Reyna did what any normal teenager would do in her condition, but she is still a queen because she never allowed her emotions to get better of her duties.

As for saying Jason was oblivious to her feelings. Well, I might get some hate for saying this, but Percy was oblivious to the fact that Annabeth, Rachel, Nico and Calypso were head over heels for him at the same point in time. He chose Annabeth over Calypso, who was so heartbroken that she cursed Annabeth(as seen in House of Hades).

Percy acted exactly like a teenager. So did Jason. So let's just cut him some slack please.

Actually devastated about the fact that Jason planned to die the exact same way Leo did? Leo knew Jason and Piper wouldn’t let him sacrifice himself so he just didn’t tell them what he was planning to do. The last thing he does before he executes his plan at the end of BoO is make sure his friends are out of range so they won’t get hurt in the process.

Jason simply planned to let Piper move away with her dad and just never tell her that one of them was destined to die. He just decided it would be him and planned to just go sacrifice himself after Piper left.

Something something Leo died to protect Jason, but instead of achieving what he wanted (keeping Jason safe and cheating fate so they could both live), Leo accidentally reinforced Jason’s belief that love is meant to be shown through sacrifice.
