WIP Wednesday! - BuckTommy 5+1 - Part 6b
"Just a short little +1 to wrap up my 5+1 story" I say as I type up another 1000 words of the final part without finishing it.
5 times the 118 worries about telling Buck that Tommy got married and 1 time they realize they didn't have to.
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5 +1 a
1b - Maddie
Buck couches down next to Chimney, eye level with Jee, and in his most serious voice admits to her, “Jee, I did get a puppy.  Her name is Quinn.  Would you like to meet her?”
Jee, to her credit, looks up at Maddie for permission before she turns back to Buck and nods enthusiastically.
He scoops her up under the arms and picks her up again to carry her out the back doors.  She starts talking a mile a minute, asking questions about the dog while Maddie and Chimney follow at a more sedate pace with Robert still in his car seat.
Maddie takes time to take in the main floor of the house as they pass through it. The kitchen is neat, without much in the way of food or supplies lying out.
What catches Maddie off guard is that all of the doors are closed.  With the loft, everything was open without any privacy.  Despite the open concept kitchen and living room, the house seems a little more closed off than the loft, or even Eddie’s place would have been.
Buck has left the patio doors open; large, sliding glass doors that span the whole wall. The open onto an expansive backyard that has a concrete wall at the far end and greenery that gives privacy from the neighbours.
The backyard is definitely set up for a party. There are tables scattered about the yard, and a raised wooden dance floor set up in the middle. There’s an outdoor kitchen area close to the house, with a bar space set up.  To one side, there’s a fire pit and chairs, to the other is a small grassy area with a large dog pen set up where Jee sits squealing as a small beagle puppy tries to climb into her lap and lick her face.
Jee is nearly beside herself with joy, and Buck sits beside her, knees hugged to his chest, basking in it.  Maddie can’t remember the last time she’s seen him this happy.
The puppy spots the newcomers, and lets out a few  more yips.  Buck stands up, and motions for them to join him.  “You guys are a little earlier than I expected.  Do you mind watching Quinn with Jee while I get changed and make sure everything is ready to go?”
Chimney nods, and Maddie can tell he’s calculating what kind of mental manouvering he’s going to have to do with Jee to convince her they can’t get a dog.  She is already head over heels with this puppy.
Robert starts to wake up, face scrunching, and arms stretching out adorably.
“Do you mind if I come inside with you?” Maddie asks.  “Just let me know where I can set up to change Robert, and then I’ll get out of your hair.”
Buck seems a little put off buy the suggestion, like he didn’t want her back in the house, but he says, “Sure!  Follow me – I can show you the guest room we have set up for Jee.  That can be yours for tonight if Robert needs a quite place, or you need to get a little quite time yourself.”
Maddie nods gratefully and follows him inside.  Buck leads her one of the closed doors on the main floor, and cracks it open for her.  It’s a small room with a single bed and a small pack and play set up.  There’s a small glider set up in one corner, and a small kids table and book shelf set up in another.  The room is packed, but Maddie catches that the bookshelf is full of Jee’s favourites.
“Buck,” Maddie tries to say, eyes welling up with tears.  “You put this room together for the kids?”
Buck offers her a shy smile, like he was embarrassed to be caught out.  “Well, yeah.  I know you guys are still finding your own routine, but I wanted you to be comfortable coming to visit, especially if you wanted to get out of your house for a break.”
The tears start coming in earnest, and Buck takes a step back.  “No. I’m sorry Maddie.  I didn’t mean to over step.”
Maddie shook her head vehemently, and tried to scrub the tears from her eyes with the back of her hand.  “It’s the damn hormones. Buck, it means so much to me that you would do this.  I’ve been so worried that you’ve been pulling away from all of us, but I know you needed the space out of the shadow of the 118.  And you’ve clearly been flourishing with these changes.  I just wasn’t sure you wanted to make room for us in this new life.”
“Awe Maddie, no,” Buck sighed, puling Maddie in for a hug.  “I’m always going to need my big sister, and you, Chim and the kids are always going to be my family.  I just needed some space to figure out who I was when I wasn’t Buck from the 118.”
Maddie pulls back from the hug, and looks up at Buck.  “And did you figure it out.”
He smiled back at her. “Yeah. I think I did.”
The moment was ended by the sound of something crashing on the floor above.
“Is someone else here?” Maddie asked, and she would have pressed further but Robert decided test out his lungs and voice his displeasure of at being left in the car seat.
Buck shook his head. “Must be some boxes upstairs falling over. I haven’t had the chance to unpack everything just yet.  You settle Robert.  I’ll check out what it was and meet you back outside.”
Buck left, closing the door as he did, and Maddie went to work undoing the buckles on Robert’s seat.  She pulled him out and held him close to her chest while she took in the room Buck had set up for her kids.  It was even painted her favourite colour, with a border of unicorns around the ceiling.  She breathed in the smell of Robert’s hair and felt more settled that she had in months.

Arrivals
Day 8 for @bucktommyfluffebruary: surprise read on ao3 read other days here
Buck smells like an airport. He couldn’t accurately describe what that smell entails, but he knows he stinks of it. He’s exhausted, his feet hurt, and his bad leg is swollen from the pressure changes. He wants to take his sneakers off, drink a massive glass of icy-cold water, and fall into bed; in that order.
But no matter how crappy he feels, he won’t let a single word of complaint pass his lips. Any discomfort he’s experiencing has to be dwarfed by what Maddie’s going through. She just did the same amount of traveling as him, and she's six months pregnant. Thank God they were only in Pennsylvania for the weekend. His Mom’s retirement party went well, Buck didn’t make a fool of himself, and Maddie was glowing. But being with his parents was as exhausting as ever.
And that’s not including the fact that they still have no idea how to deal with Buck dating a man.
They have never cared about anyone he’s dated before, as long as he wasn’t embarrassing them or getting a girl pregnant. And then they saw him with Tommy at Maddie’s wedding. They didn’t say anything, but Buck could feel his Mom’s eyes on him the whole time. Even as he escorted a half-asleep Tommy to his Jeep, they only waved half-heartedly. He assumed they had decided it was a phase, and didn’t need to introduce themselves.
When he told them on Friday that Tommy was on special deployment, or he would have brought him along, his mom stuttered over three different sentence starts. She finally ended up with, “I didn’t realize you were still with him.”
Before Buck could think better of it, he said, “Technically, I’m with him again.” That had kicked off a barebones explanation of their break-up and reconciliation, which his parents had not reacted well to.
The rest of the weekend continued in the same tone.
The pointed, leading questions, which he pretended to misunderstand. The insinuations that he didn’t know his own mind, which he ignored. The blatant aspersions against Tommy, blaming him for confusing Evan and leading him on. Those he addressed immediately, and at one point, it would have devolved into a shouting match, if not for Maddie.
Suffice to say, he’s happy to be back in Los Angeles, even if he still has an hour long Uber ride ahead of him. Normally, he knows his family would be tripping over themselves to pick them up from the airport, but Chimney is home with a still-sick-but-recovering Jee, and the rest of the 118 is on shift. Most disappointingly, Tommy’s still fighting the wildfires up north, piloting water bombers for another week and a half.
Buck will be going home to an empty loft.
The baggage carousel comes into view, so Buck parks Maddie by a nearby column and goes to wait for their bags. She’s digging her cell out as he turns away. He checks his own phone, finds ‘welcome home’ messages from the group chat, but nothing from Tommy. He’s probably in the air. Or sleeping. Eventually, a familiar navy bag and maroon suitcase come into view. His duffle gets slung over a shoulder and he leads Maddie’s wheeling suitcase over. They head towards Arrivals without any words exchanged. Maddie’s walking slowly, obviously tired, breath puffing out of her mouth as she rests one hand low on her belly. Buck wraps an arm around her shoulders and she leans into him.
“I wish Chimney and Jee could have come with us. He’s so good with Mom and Dad, and Jee is so distracting.” She sighs. “I’m sorry again. About what they were saying. I wish they would just be happy for you.”
“It’s alright Mads, I wasn’t about to let you fly to Hershey all alone. I can deal with them for a weekend.”
She lapses into silence again. They turn another corner and step onto an escalator, finally descending to ground level. The Arrivals area is a wider section of the terminal, an open space, right by the main exit. Floor to ceiling windows let in the setting sun. There’s people all around, reunions between travelers and their families happening in a hundred different languages, a hundred different cultures. Buck steers them through the crowd, hearing the laughter and tears in the voices surrounding them. There’s a line of people by the doors, holding signs. Sunbeams edge everyone in gold.
One of the signs says “Buckley.”
Wait, what? His eyes jerk from the sign to the man holding it.
Holy shit. It’s Tommy. How?!
Buck stops dead. Their eyes meet. He knows his mouth is hanging open. Tommy’s smiling widely, almost laughing at the dumbfounded expression that Buck knows he’s sporting. His face crinkles adorably with the force of his joy. His eyes are sparkling.
The arm Buck has around Maddie’s shoulder jerks her to a stop too. People continue to stream around them. She darts a look at his face, bursting into laughter and following his gaze to Tommy. She waves, still giggling. Tommy’s already striding over, eating up the distance between them until he's close enough to touch.
Two big hands settle on his cheeks, pinkies applying the smallest pressure to his jaw. His teeth clack together when he finally remembers to shut his mouth. A chaste, gentle kiss is pressed to his lips.
“Hi baby. Welcome home.”
Stupidly, all Buck can think to say is, “you’re supposed to be in Oregon.”
Tommy chuckles. “I was, but the Canadians showed up early, so they sent us home.” His hands drop down to wrap around Buck’s. Their fingers intertwine without Buck’s input. “Surprised?”
Buck nods. He recognizes he’s staring, like Tommy is a hallucination that might disappear at any second, but it's been nearly three weeks since he’s seen his boyfriend. He’s just had a shitty weekend in his hometown, playing the part of a dutiful son to strangers, while worrying about his sister and his unborn nibling, and dealing with the casual disregard he’s come to expect from his parents. Only this time, there was a nice heaping tablespoon of biphobia sprinkled on top. He needs a minute.
Maddie lays a hand on both of their elbows. “Good timing Tommy, I was worried we were going to beat you to the exit.”
Buck whips his head around to stare at her. “You knew!”
She giggles again. He spins back to Tommy. He’s flushed from laughter, radiant in the early evening light. Buck’s gaze darts over his face. His blue eyes, his crow’s feet, his perfect teeth. The cleft. He’s beautiful, and he’s here for Buck.
It feels like his brain finally comes back online. Tommy’s here. For Buck.
Buck lunges forward, driving a little oomph out of Tommy and wrapping his arms around him tightly. He squeezes and lifts, hoisting Tommy a few inches into the air, making him flail and squeak out an undignified noise. Maddie snorts, bending at the waist, helpless with mirth. Tommy’s hands land on his shoulders, fingertips digging into the muscle, little spots of warm pressure.
“Evan! Put me down, oh my God. I missed you too!”

Hi everyone! I'm here with part two of the untitled/unfinished angsty fic I posted last week. You can find part 1 here if you want to go read that before this. I don't know when I'll get around to posting part 3, because it's still in the outline stage (looks at open document with the word 'reconciliation?' written in comic sans) but it's somewhere in the list after 3hrs and the others. Anyway, here's the rough draft of part two (she was written immediately after the first part, I just never posted her.) I hurt you last time, I'll put a band-aid on it this time, enjoy! 🧑🏻‍🚒🧑🏻‍🚒
One of the main differences between First Presbyterian and Good Samaritan was the Jello schedule, and how you could bribe the nurses to 'lose' an extra cup of Strawberry Jello on your tray at Good Sam.
First Pres's resident Red Jello© was cherry, which always reminded him of the time he did Jello shots off of some girl at some college party- the time he puked because of her excess use of body glitter. Jello shots, not great coming back up. The memory always made him shiver, and Tuesday's Red Jello© at First Pres was usually casually pushed aside with a harried glance. If Eddie snickered, because he had in fact been told about the Jello Shot-Body Glitter fiasco, then that was just his lot.
Luckily, (not really but hey, at least he was alive and not in a coma this time) Sheila had slipped an extra cup of green Jello onto his tray, an equal exchange for the chocolate bar he'd 'accidentally' left out.
"Everything's looking pretty good, the swelling's decreased significantly," The doctor offered, swiping through a few pages on that tablet in her hands before looking up with a smile. "You should be out of here early next week."
"Next week?" His skin itched, stuck here for three days already. At least Eddie was next door, and Sheila didn't mind wheeling him back and forth between the two rooms too much, so he wasn't completely stir-crazy yet.
"Unfortunately, you're not completely out of the woods yet, Buck. We're still monitoring the clotting situation, given your history. Ideally, I'd like to see the swelling reduce further before sending you home." Dr. Daria looked once again at her screen, nodding once in her assessment before jotting something down. "Precautionary measures, that's all."
"Right," Buck sighed, resigning himself to his bed-ridden fate. He could already hear the lecture from Maddie if he tried to check out AMA, and now she had Jee to really back up the tear-filled scolding. He still had Eddie to bother, now that he was mainly recovering from surgery, and Sheila was always more than happy to make sure the two (hot- the nurse's station tittered) firefighters were okay.
It wasn't exactly a hardship to stay, it just gave him too much time to think, which wasn't... great, at the moment. Too many questions, too many thoughts about being trapped, about his thoughts spiraling... about how he was probably (definitely,) not as over his last relationship as he 'should' be.
Every time he thought of the moment before he'd crashed- the fear in Tommy's eyes that pierced right through him- it sent him further down the rabbit hole. Nothing like reliving the moment, over and over and over again.
"You could try to talk to him?" Eddie offered, snatching his own Jello cup back when Buck tried to sneak it off his tray (rude, Eddie knew green was a top tier flavor in Buck's book.)
"And say what? 'Hey, man, I know it's been a few months, and I know we haven't actually spoken, but somehow I've kind of fallen harder for you than before?'"
"Sounds pretty good to me-stop playing with my food, man." Eddie snipped, swatting at Buck's hand as he poked at a suspicious chunk of something in the pasta salad. A stubborn part of him wanted nothing more than to stick it out, adamant that it wasn't actually his fault in the first place. He wasn't the one who ran this time. Tommy did.
"So, continue being idiots, then. I don't know what to tell you." Buck huffed, eyes rolling at the wholly unhelpful answer.
He picked at a green olive slice, poking the red pimento piece farther down into the noodles below, fully ignoring Eddie's stare. He could be eating green fucking Jello- this was just karma.
Really.
Totally had nothing to do with the fact that his best friend was probably right, and talking probably wouldn't hurt... Unless of course Tommy had moved on in those three months. Found himself some other guy-
"Stop." Eddie's voice cuts his spiral short, eyes never once leaving Buck's face. "Jesus, I can see you overthinking this. Get out of your head and talk to him. Hell, yell at him if it'll make you feel better. It'd probably make him feel better." The last part was huffed under Eddie's breath, not really meant to be heard, but he was tired of watching Buck vandalize his (admittedly shitty quality) lunch. At least at First Pres he could get revenge, watch Buck turn practically green at the mere smell of the Cherry Jello. Quid pro quo.
"What- what's that even supposed to mean?"
Because what was that supposed to mean?
The thought of what it could mean sent a dangerous little spark though Buck's chest, a sparkle of what he's been trying to squash since Tommy walked out.
"Just- please, just talk to him, or I'm calling Donato, because apparently she's the only one who can talk sense into either of you." Eddie bat at his hand once again, saving the semi-edible vegetables from a fate similar to the mangled pasta salad. "I'm stealing your rice pudding, asshole."
"You wouldn't dare," Buck pulled his hand back and away, straightening too quick and wincing at the sharp stab of pain in his back. Which threat the comment was directed toward, Buck wasn't sure, both maybe. He really didn't need another Donato dressing down on top of all of this, and Eddie could pry Good Samaritan's rice pudding from his cold dead hands.
"I know where you sleep, Buckley. Now get out of here and let me enjoy Top Gun before Chris gets here." Buck flipped him off before scooting the wheelchair away from the bed, glaring at Eddie when he heard the familiar ping of his call button being rung.
"I can manag-"
"You boys all set," Sheila chimed, knocking once on the door jam as she poked her head in. Buck watched her expression change, her eyebrow raising as she clocked his hands on the wheels, his back hunched slightly (she'd ratted him out to Daria once, he knew she'd do it again.) He flinched when she clicked her tongue, shooting a glare at Eddie's poorly covered cough-chuckle. He didn't fight it when Sheila grabbed the handles of the wheelchair, flipping Eddie off one last time as she wheeled him back out of the room and into his own.
"You are just bound and determined to stay here, aren't you?" Buck smiled as charmingly as he could, one of his boyish grins that used to get him everywhere with the women he flirted with, huffing when the nurse only crossed her arms over her chest.
"I would miss your smiling face too much," Buck wheedled, moving himself into the bed with a wince. Sheila scoffed as she moved around the room, checking the tablet left on the table at the end of his bed.
"I'll be sure to tell Daria that's the reason you're still swelling." She was definitely going to rat him out again.

So recently I've been thinking about what my ideal ending for Buck would be. The others in the main cast have stories that have clear endings for the most part (Chim and Maddie with their growing family and the heavily implied Chim becoming Captain thing and continued HenRen domestic life), even Eddie and fixing his relationship with Chris (and then maybe hopefully taking the time to assess himself and go back to therapy again because mental healthy people probably don't have minor religious crises when learning their then-girlfriend was a nun in training and simultaneously have an extended emotional affair with their dead wife's doppelganger), but Buck's story is so up in the air. Like they really don't seem to know what they want to do with his character besides make him suffer and a lot of times its not even by the results of his actions ??? The truck bombing was aimed at Bobby, the tsunami was a natural disaster, the whole blood clot thing, oh you were a 'my sisters keeper' baby and that's why your parents were distant and emotionally abusive, everything with Maddie (none of which was also her fault I am not blaming her for Doug or the PPD), BOBBY DYING and him loosing his actual father figure!!! The big Buck driven plot points have been the lawsuit and him learning he's bi and coming out, and I'm sure other things but those are the big two at least and my brain is not fully on line yet. He's such a good character and I want him to have a story that's good without the bad things happen to Buck for plot reasons guys dont question it we are good writers this is a good show guys, yknow.
I've gone off the rails. I just don't know where they're planning on going with Buck's story and idk I kinda want the series finale to be a parallel to Red with his house full of memories and maybe they play up the whole him reminiscing to some young person and we think "oh no poor Buck is alone and his worst fears came true" but instead we learn its Jee's kid hanging out with their cool great uncle (or his own kid/grandchild) before some kind of party and it pans out and his home is happy and full of love and the people he cares about and a dog because he deserves a dog. I also don't know if I want him to end up with a woman, which feels weird to say because he is bi so he could still end up with a woman but I feel like terrible internet people would use an endgame hetero marriage as some kind of gotcha he was straight all along and the Tommy of it all was just pandering to the woke mob or something stupid like that. Also the main cast is already large enough I don't know if adding a whole new character would be worth it, I'm not sure what they would need to do to make me like another SO of Buck's. I'm sure it could happen but I can't imagine what it would be like. God this got long. Really, I don't think he needs to be in a relationship for his story to be complete, but this is television and shows and movies seem to think a fulfilling life you need to have a romantic partner.
TLDR I want Buck to be happy and that's literally it but this show seems hellbent on making the man miserable.
nonnie I love you, and I agree with you SO MUCH about all the terrible things they've done with Buck over the course of the show.
here's my ideal ending: (wow this got SUPER long im so sorry) (putting this under a cut because WOW)
(for context, I would want this to be the final episode of the show.)
almost the entire episode takes place outside of work, and it's been 5-10 years since the "last" episode.
we see Buck out at a park. he's got a dog, he's on the phone, and we hear that he's talking to Maddie. he's talking about how awful the traffic is and how bad the parking situation is, how it was taking forever to find a parking space so he just got out with the dog to secure a bench. the conversation is entirely one sided, so we don't hear Maddie's responses, but we see Buck light up with joy. the shot pans out, and there's the 118, set up at a bench already with their various kids and extended families, and there's balloons and a banner that says "congrats", and everyone's thrilled to see him. they all yell out "surprise!"
the park party continues, and in the background we see a man approaching with a stroller. the shot clears, and it's Tommy. this is how we learn that Buck and Tommy are married, when we see their matching rings. Buck scoops up the baby from the stroller, and Tommy makes a joke about how he's "just chopped liver to this kid," and "clearly Evan is the favourite." Buck reassures him that Tommy's still his favourite. the 118 groan at their sappiness but it's clear they're all really happy for him.
after the party, we get to follow the others for a while.
Maddie and Chim are considering hiring a contractor to build an addition to their house so they'll have a spare nursery for Buck's baby - this is how we learn that Buck and Tommy had been trying to become parents for a few years by this point - and decide to talk to Athena about it, since she still has all of the contacts who worked on her and Bobby's house way back when.
over with Hen and Karen, they're packing down Denny's bedroom in preparation for him to head to college (or move out, depending on how big the time jump has been). we learn that they're still fostering, but that the emotional toll is starting to wear on them, and they discuss whether it's smart to keep going, and their feelings about stopping. Hen broaches the idea of working with a youth shelter instead, and Karen, always a step ahead because she's brilliant, pulls up the list of shelters on her phone that she's had bookmarked for months, places that are in need of volunteers and resources. we leave their scene on a hopeful note.
over to Eddie and Chris, and they've moved house. we see them in the back garden, sitting by an ofrenda, where we see photographs of Abuela, Pepa, and Shannon set up. Eddie is teaching Chris about their culture, about the importance of remembrance and why their traditions matter. the back door to their house opens, and a woman walks outside to join them. this woman is Eddie's fiance. I have no concrete thoughts on who she should be, only that she's a good match for Eddie and that she loves Chris like her own. maybe she's Latina too, maybe she's not, I don't know. but she comes outside and reminds Eddie that he's going to be late for his therapy appointment if he doesn't move quick, and asks Chris if he needs a ride to his love interest's house for their Big Date (Chris is meeting his LI's parents for the first time that night). there's some light-hearted joking from Eddie about how his "little boy is growing up" at that part. Chris says his partner is picking him up, "but thanks, Mom." there's some very sentimental music as Eddie and his fiance lock eyes, with the picture of Shannon out-of-focus in the background, before Chris's words are acknowledged happily.
we move on, and we're back with Buck and Tommy at their house.
the first thing we notice is that their house is full of photos. friends, family, everyone that matters to the two of them are scattered around the house. there's a framed wedding photo on the mantel, with the baby's sonogram, hand/foot prints, and newborn photoshoot pictures framed around it. Buck and Tommy are on the couch, with the baby in a bassinet nearby, and a plain white box on the coffee table. the box, Buck explains to a perplexed Tommy, will be their child's Baby Box. he's got a craft supply box sitting next to it, and explains that it's a Necessary Part of crafting a baby box, to decorate it together. Tommy knows about the Buckley Baby Box Drama by now, so he doesn't argue, and he doesn't comment on the way Buck tears up when he very carefully paints the baby's name on the lid, taking the whole thing as seriously as he would a rescue mission. once the box is done, they talk for a while, and we learn snippets of their life in the interim: we learn that Tommy chose to take a promotion on the ground, better pay and a safer career path than helicopter rescues. we learn that one of Athena's kids are starting their probie year at the 118 soon. we learn that Buck did take a sabbatical from the 118 after Bobby's death, and that it was "the best choice he ever made." just, lots of little things mentioned in passing, and then Buck tells Tommy about Red, and how he'd been so afraid that he would turn out just like him in the end, and how glad he is that he didn't, and how sorry he still feels that Red did.
then, the last few scenes take place inside the firehouse.
everyone's there, eating at the table. family dinners have been reinstated. the head chair at the table remains empty. Buck cooked, so Eddie and Ravi are on cleanup duty. Hen and Chim slip away, and Buck wanders off. we follow him to the captain's office, but we don't see any name tag on the door or desk. inside, Chim is sitting in the desk chair, leaning back, hands behind his head. he cracks a joke about Buck needing to "get back to work".
Buck laughs. then he says, "okay, smartass, get out of my chair, I've got reports to fill out. unless you want to do those for me?"
and Chim jumps up and says "no thank you, I'd rather chug antiseptic."
Buck shoos him out of the office and moves to sit at the desk, turning around a nameplate as he goes. the nameplate says Captain Evan Buckley, and when the camera pans back out of the office, we see the same thing on the door.
the very last shot of the episode is the new 118 probie walking in through the app bay doors and, when stopped, asking for Captain Buckley.
full circle moment.
