HAPPY PRIDE MONTH!!
To start out this year’s pride month, here’s a repost of my most prideful art 🖤🩶🤍💜
Characters and their canon sexuality explanations under the cut!
Peridot - Steven Universe: canon asexual aromantic. Peridot was confirmed to be aroace by Maya Peterson, a storyboard artist for the show. She said in a post on Twitter, “She’s not about fusion. She’s the ace and aro rep.” And true to her words, in the episode Log Date 7 15 2, peridot was shown to have a disinterest in fusion in a scene where she backed out of fusing with Garnet. I know fusion isn’t a direct allegory to romance or sex, but as an aspec person, this scene was super relatable. Also, my personal headcanon is that she is in a queer platonic relationship (qpr) with Lapis :)
Perry the Platypus - Phineas and Ferb: canon asexual. Perry was confirmed to be asexual by Dan Povenmire, a co-creator of the show. He confirmed this in a comment on TikTok, where someone asked “Hey is Perry part of LGBTQ+”, to which he replied, “Does asexual count?” Some believe he only said this because he didn’t like the idea of Perry being shipped. But that doesn’t mean we can’t still claim him!
SpongeBob - SpongeBob Squarepants: Canon asexual. In 2002, Stephen Hillenburg, the creator of SpongeBob said, “I always think of [the character] as being somewhat asexual.” Technically, this was not said as a positive reference to asexuality, but in order to deny that the character was gay. However, Nickelodeon later posted a pride month post featuring a few lgbt+ characters and SpongeBob was included. A lot of people, including myself, chose to believe this was meant to be in support of SpongeBob being canonically asexual.
Zim - Invader Zim: This one is just my own headcanon, but I wanted to include him because he’s a character that’s very important to me and, as an ace, I have always related to. Also, it’s shown in episode 3, Parent Teacher Night, that irkens reproduce by cloning rather than any natural means. And while I know that doesn’t really prove anything, I think it adds to my headcanon :)
Alastor - Hazbin Hotel: Canon asexual. Vivziepop, the creator of Hazbin Hotel first confirmed Alastor as being ace when she posted a drawing for national coming out day in 2018, which featured Alastor holding the asexual pride flag. Later, she confirmed during a Q&A that he is canonically asexual. During season 1 of Hazbin Hotel, Rosie, Alastor’s friend, jokingly calls him an “ace in the hole.”

I'm gonna be canning about Steven Universe real quick
So during the fight scene between the crystal gems vs Yellow and Blue, Blue makes the comment "does every gem that comes in contact with this planet turn traitor!?"
I want to think about that but specifically with the Diamonds first, Pink was the first of the 4 to go down and instantly fell in love, then she caused the gem war
Then Blue Diamond spends quite a bit of time on earth, see Garnets first fusions, when she goes to visit Pinks grave and the lastly the battle between her and the Crystal Gems, she was the second to rebel against White Diamond, helping Steven and Connie
Yellow isn't seen spending much time at Earth, and only visits with blue to check what's up (although for Yellow and Blue I guess you could count the human zoo but that's about it) she also rebels against White Diamond by also helping Steven and Connie
White diamond lastly gets in contact with Steven and they have a 'conversation' of sorts and she finally goes to Earth and betrays what she's been going for so long
Then we move to other gems such as Amethyst, who stayed in the kindergarten so long and didn't emerge until the war was over, I don't think the show gives us an exact confirmation as to how long she was there alone but I think it was definitely a few years, but when the gems find her they tell her the truth she knows that she could technically still rebel against them, even if she lost but she doesn't, shes traitor to a world she doesn't even know about
Lapis was on earth, but she never really got to see it until she came back with Peridot and Jasper, it takes a while for her to really love Earth considering the trauma of all she's been through but the original comment we're talking about was aimed at her
Jasper is the only gem we see who never betrays the original Diamond Authority, calling Steven "her diamond" after their last fight in SU Future (and before someone says something about Eyeball and Aquamarine, they just had a mutual hate for Steven)
So yes every gem that came in contact with that planet turned traitor at one point, whether it was during the gem war or years after
(also before someone comes at me for the 2 Lapis we see if Future, they kept doing what they were doing because they wanted too and also that wasn't on earth)

Where the heck are you finding people hating on Lapidot (discounting those people who hate SU as a whole bc the final messed stuff up)
Peridot seems to be canonically aro-ace. This is backed by the "Fusion for Beginners and Experts" book. Furthermore, someone who worked on the show confirmed her sexual orientation.
People use this info to attack others who ship Peridot with anyone at all, Lapis included.
Regarding Lapidot, have you checked out the "anti Lapidot" tag here on Tumblr?

"It's been said that the enemies-to-lovers tropes requires a level playing field."
Lol, what?
Whoever said that clearly doesn't know what they're talking about. The power dynamics between two enemies don't need to be healthy uwu ideal for their relationship to count as an enemies-to-lovers romance. You just need to follow what it says on the tin: the enemies become lovers. Simple as that.
"The final messed stuff up?"
By sparing the Diamonds? If this is what you're getting at, I wholeheartedly disagree. I'm pro-Diamond-redemption, broski.

I don’t need you to respect me, I respect me
I’m gonna miss writing about Amethyst.
As the most sisterly Crystal Gem, a firebrand in the new role of middle child after spending millennia as the baby of the group, Amethyst’s story is about growing from a wild teen to a responsible adult. Like Steven, she feels the need to prove that she’s a Crystal Gem too, but unlike Steven, she already is a Crystal Gem, so she carries a different kind of resentment as she continues to be treated like a child. It’s made even worse by her warrior instincts clashing with her small frame: she lives with the constant anxiety that she’s a mistake, a Gem who came out wrong and doesn’t belong in her family, so she comforts and distracts herself with hedonism and shapeshifting. Her problem goes beyond not feeling respected: deep down, she fears that she doesn’t deserve respect.
But she changes her mind.
Tumblr media
“This isn’t normal.”
The Return and Jailbreak culminated the first act of Steven Universe, giving our characters subtle achievements (Amethyst and Pearl casually fuse into Opal, Greg reveals a deeper understanding of the Gems than we once thought, Beach City comes together as a community when Steven is in danger) and huge changes (Steven summons a massive shield, Garnet’s status as a fusion is confirmed, Lapis goes from prisoner to imprisoner). While not an official finale, Beta and Earthlings culminated the second act, narrowing the focus to five characters as they each reach one milestone or another: Lapis and Amethyst find a level of peace, Peridot defends her new home, Jasper succumbs to corruption, and Steven helps his friends but fails to help his enemy.
In a way, Change Your Mind culminates the third act with an even narrower focus. Sure, it gives big moments to a ton of characters (there’s fanservice galore, and we see the three Diamonds in particular take enormous steps), but we zero in on Steven in the same way the entire act has zeroed in on Steven, because this is a story about identity. It isn’t only about who he is, but who he wants to be moving forward, and fusing all the insights he’s learned from his human family, his Crystal Gem family, and his Diamond family into a song that encapsulates his growth over the course of the series.
Tumblr media
We start in the most lifelike of the Diamond dreams, so real that Steven still sees himself as Steven rather than embodying Pink. Once again, this connection emerges from sleeping in a location where Pink once dwelled, but while he wasn’t feeling her impatience and rage in Jungle Moon, nor her hardening resolve in Can’t Go Back, nor her whimsy in Familiar, this time they share the same headspace when they’re both locked in a tower.
Considering how bombastic things get in this episode, I love how low-key this final dream remains until White Diamond interferes. We’re as lost as Steven at first, worrying about Connie and baffled at Blue’s recognizable mood but incongruous accusations, but as the truth becomes clear, he transforms into Pink off-screen without any fanfare, both in body and in mind: Steven isn’t questioning Blue’s warning about Pink Pearl, Pink Diamond is apologizing for her own behavior in Zach Callison’s voice. Still, looking down jolts him out of it, and after seeing the Crystal Gems poofed at the ball for a more definitive Steven memory, we cycle in Rose’s horror at her family launching a final attack on Earth. The rapid-fire identity shifts that follow inspired the most haunting piece of promo art for the episode, drawn by Rebecca Sugar herself, but I didn’t wanna display it without a seizure warning.
It’s excellent exposition, hitting the highlights of the Diamonds’ many wrongs and establishing Steven’s fraying sense of self in a way that’s both artful and brief; it’s important to remind younger viewers about the stakes, but Change Your Mind doesn’t pretend that anyone should be watching this episode without context, so it doesn’t prioritize thorough explanation. And despite how frightening the nightmare becomes, Steven gains a new sense of clarity after seeing the pattern laid out in front of him. The Diamonds are hurting him in the same way they hurt his mother, and if he’s going to help everyone, he needs to help himself.
Tumblr media
When Blue Diamond returns to the tower in modern day, Steven isn’t afraid, and he isn’t alone. The first of many puns riddling the finale emerges (“Déjà Blue!”) before Connie proves why she’s the perfect partner for our hero, platonic or otherwise. He’s terrible at confronting the people that hurt him—this would require him to acknowledge he’s hurt in the first place, which he’s also terrible atbut if she was comfortable enough with confrontation to call out her best friend when he wrongs her, Blue Diamond doesn’t stand a chance. Connie comes out swinging, loading the bases with candor and sass despite Blue’s confusion over why a human even gets an opinion about this stuff, which makes Steven’s refusal to apologize hit the Diamond like a grand slam.
I love that Steven’s flat “no” takes Connie by surprise as well as Blue, because yeah, it’s uncharacteristically blunt for someone who’s spent his entire trip to Homeworld bending over backwards like he usually does to accommodate others. When he doubles down by explaining that he isn’t sorry about creating a show that celebrates queer characters whoops sorry I mean fusion, Callison makes it sound like the most obvious thing in the world, and this is what upsets Blue enough to inflict her tears on him. We’ll learn even more about Pink’s temper in Steven Universe Future, but the simple act of not bowing to authority makes Steven “worse than ever” in Blue’s mind: violence is more acceptable than insubordination. (Also, violence in cartoons is more acceptable than queer folks just sorta existing in cartoons, but that’s neither here nor there.)
Tumblr media
Change Your Mind is about combating bigotry and cycles of abuse, and Blue is the obvious first test. She’s a bigot who doesn’t think she’s a bigot (compared to Yellow, who doesn’t care that she’s a bigot, and White, who’s quite proud of being a bigot). She passively perpetuates a toxic status quo (compared to Yellow, who actively perpetuates it, and White, who established it in the first place). It makes sense that she’s the first of the remaining Diamonds to change her mind, because all it takes for her to realize that something is wrong is thinking about it a little harder.
This doesn’t let her off the hook, of course: Blues sloth—the sin, not the animal—might not look flashy next to Yellow’s wrath or White’s pride or Pink’s envy, but she still chose to do nothing for thousands of years rather than contemplate how her actions and her society might have wronged Pink. If it was this easy for Blue to realize she was hurting Pink, it makes it that much more of an issue that it took her this long to figure it out. Unintentional bigots might be the “best” option by default, but they can be just as harmful as intentional bigots, and there’s a special sort of damage that can come from an oppressor who truly believes themselves an ally.
Tumblr media
That said, while it’s important to acknowledge her blame (emphasized here when she only stops attacking Steven when he calls her out rather than the Diamonds in general), Blue is also a victim. She’s one of the most powerful beings on Homeworld, but she’s still trapped by White Diamond, and resorts to putting others down as a means of reclaiming a sense of that power. In the same way oppressed people often turn to sexism and racism and homophobia to make themselves feel bigger, Blue (and Yellow) reinforce White’s sweeping bigotry in the same way they echo her family-specific abuse. It’s not a good coping mechanism, in this show or in the real world, but understanding the problem is key to fixing it.
So it still feels like a victory when Blue turns, even though it should’ve happened ages ago, and even though she’s a tyrant. She isn’t just deciding to help Steven, she’s breaking out of that cycle in a way that allows for growth beyond our hero’s immediate concerns. Lisa Hannigan captures this transformation beautifully, shifting from manipulative whining about Pink’s behavior to a crushing realization that she’s the one who’s wrong. And even as she joins Steven’s side, she remains weighed down by her longstanding prejudice: Hannigan stutters as she refers to the Crystal Gems as his family, and her triumphant defense of Steven’s name to Yellow comes with the caveat that she’s still misgendering him.
Tumblr media
But before we get to Yellow, we take a pit stop that grounds us back to Steven and Connie’s hunger. It may seem small, but this is a critical moment in establishing Steven’s humanity in a way the show has quietly done from day one: with food.
The very first scene of Steven Universe establishes our hero’s human half in a donut shop, upset about dessert. From there, the next five episodes drill in that Steven will take a unique approach to his magical Gem heritage, and they all involve food in a major way: Cookie Cats, then his father’s saying about pork chops and hot dogs, then the Cheeseburger Backpack (important enough to be the episode’s name), then the Together Breakfast (ditto), then creating a monster based on fries.
It’s not just Steven, either. The first few Connie episodes involve eating and drinking in ways that show hints of growth (worrying about trans fats, then sneaking food into movie theaters) and mark key moments in her life (sharing a juicebox, taking her parents to dinner). Lars’s development is tied with his love of baking, and on top of him and Sadie working at the Big Donut, the Frymans and the Pizzas are so tied to their food service jobs that it’s in their names. And speaking of names, we’ve got Vidalia calling her sons Sour Cream and Onion. It even extends to the Gems: Amethyst’s connection with Earth means she loves food, and Pearl’s greater distance from humanity means she can’t stomach it.
Food is fundamentally something that humans require and Gems don’t, and just like we saw in Lars’s Head, Steven’s physical body forces him to think about his own needs despite his usual focus on others. Both his humanity and his ability to stand up for himself are key to his eventual victory, and what could’ve been a generic transition between Blue and Yellow’s big scenes instead becomes a quiet Steven scene. Steven changing into his usual clothes (including his mom’s star) and Connie changing into her own outfit (including her dad’s jacket) is the perfect finishing touch before we dive back into the drama.
Tumblr media
True to their natures, Yellow Diamond gets a starker introduction than Blue’s dream sequence: as the lights burst on, we get two shots focusing on a horrifying number of mutated Gem Shards floating around in the room, then the Crystal Gems’ thankfully intact gems in one big bubble, before panning down to the villain who caused all this pain. The menace is palpable before she even opens her mouth, but Patti LuPone’s low tone keeps the mood from boiling over just long enough that when she loses her cool, it hits like a freight train.
Blue’s passive bigotry endured because she lacked introspection, but Yellow’s active bigotry requires constantly justifying actions she knows are cruel by presenting it as a matter of superior reasoning. We’ve known from her first appearance that Yellow’s seething fury undermines her reputation for cold logic, and now more than ever the connection between her behavior and that of “sophisticated” bigots is clear. You know the type: openly, smugly hateful, but couching their hate as something derived from some deep knowledge about the subject, whether in religious convictions or whatever “science” they can scrape together to confirm their worldview.
Sure enough, even in her rage, Yellow lays down what she sees as a rational explanation for why it was okay to mistreat Pink, and why it’s okay that they themselves are mistreated: if they make exceptions for anyone, even other Diamonds, they must make exceptions for everyone, and chaos reigns. Besides the slippery slope being a fallacy, her argument is punctured by Connie’s second big retort of the night, pointing out that this extreme conclusion of Homeworld Gems living free actually sounds pretty nice. But you can’t force this type of bigot to change their mind through reason; if such a person was actually interested in logical worldviews, they wouldn’t have become a bigot in the first place. You need to change their heart.
Tumblr media
Fortunately, emotions are Blue’s domain, so she’s just the person to help. Unfortunately, in the same way she still can’t get Steven’s pronouns right, Blue lacks experience with healthy communication, and strikes a first blow against Yellow on instinct. The ensuing brawl is brutal, switching between the massive scale of two warring titans and the smaller scale of Steven and Connie scrambling to save the Crystal Gems as Blue and Yellow unload millennia of baggage on each other. It’s so important that Blue is the physical instigator here, as it fuels Yellow’s white-hot self-righteous streak like nothing else, and it keeps the fight from being one-sided all the way through: Yellow pretty much needs to be the one dealing the final blow for the scene to stick, so it gets balanced out by Blue’s opening punch.
Blue uses her powers on Yellow, and Yellow uses her powers on Blue, but Steven’s power is talking. So just like with Blue’s conversion, Connie gets the opening words while Steven gets the finisher. When he finally gets her attention after being ignored throughout the scene, he makes Yellow listen to him by using the same food-based expression I mentioned from all the way back in Laser Light Cannon. It’d pack a bigger punch if Greg said “If every pork chop were perfect, we wouldn’t have hot dogs” at literally any other point in the show, but it still does the trick.
Tumblr media
Blue was emotionally ready to accept that Pink was suffering, but hadn’t considered the Diamonds’ role in that suffering. Yellow knew that Pink suffered thanks to the Diamonds, but suppressed her emotions to the point where she couldn’t empathize with her sister’s plight. Blue needed to be more thoughtful to change, and Yellow needed to be more in touch with her emotions to change, and thus the stage is set for the Battle of Heart and Mind against White Diamond.
Except that this isn’t the lesson of Change Your Mind. Blue and Yellow show that some bigots can be reached, which is great! But despite their differences, Steven uses the same basic strategy in both: he doesn’t let them belittle his identity, he confidently dispels their wrongheaded assumptions, and he gets help from allies instead of shouldering the burden himself. We spend the beginning of the episode seeing that in the right circumstances this approach can work, but from here we’ll see that with some bigots, it’s a non-starter.
Tumblr media
So long as you can engage with bigots while maintaining your self-respect, it can be good work to try and help them see the light. It’s not an obligation, but if you want to change hearts and minds, Steven provides a good template for how to do it. Now the rest of the episode can focus on the bigger lesson: if someone refuses to respect your humanity when you’re steadfast and forthright, it isn’t your job to breathe in their poison, or to hold your breath until you asphyxiate waiting for change.
But more on that after the break!
I Can’t Believe We’ve Come So Far
Tumblr media
As we reach the end of the original series, it would be criminal not to acknowledge three long-time storyboarders who are on their way out. This isn’t their final contribution to the series, as only one of Change Your Mind’s twelve credited writer/boarders didn’t go on to work on The Movie in some way (Christine Liu, whose tenure was brief but great), and Hilary Florido stayed on as a supervisor for Future. But I wanted to write the big sendoffs here, as this is the last proper “episode” that these three worked on as regular boarders. So it’s time to say goodbye to Katie Mitroff, Hilary Florido, and Jeff Liu.
First up is Katie Mitroff, who clocked two early knockouts with Alone Together and The Test alongside Florido. Mitroff’n’Florido went on to make other classics like Maximum Capacity and Joy Ride before the former teamed up with Lamar Abrams and the latter teamed up with Jesse Zuke for their next batch of episodes.
With Abrams, Mitroff deepened the lore of the show with We Need to Talk, Steven’s Birthday, Bismuth, Buddy’s Book, Three Gems and a Baby, and especially The Answer. She gave us the harrowing revelation of Back to the Moon, and the most ridiculous episode of the series, Restaurant Wars. Her final partner was Paul Villeco, finishing strong with The Trial, Back to the Kindergarten, Your Mother and Mine, Pool Hopping, What’s Your Problem?, Reunited, and Change Your Mind, 100% of which are either in my Love ‘em ranking or my Top Episodes. (Oh, sorry, spoiler alert I love Change Your Mind.)
It’s strange, because she didn’t work on any of the major episodes of Amethyst’s big arc at the end of Season 3, but Mitroff is one of my favorite Amethyst boarders: she’s the consistent thread between Maximum Capacity, Back to the Moon, and What’s Your Problem?, three cornerstones of the character. She excelled at going outside the show’s usual style, as seen in The Answer and Your Mother and Mine, and it’s no coincidence she helped animate Isn’t It Love? to bring Cotton Candy Garnet back for one last ride.
Katie Mitroff is an absolute rock star, I wish her well and you should too.

Fragments III, 1-100
300 drabbles about Steven Universe/Future, 100 words each! These are the first 100 prompts and writer’s choices that have been fulfilled.
Asterisks are placed next to my personal favorites that I’ve written.
Baggage* — Steven meets his new therapist!
Eternity —How about a Bellow interaction you've always wanted to see in canon but didn't get to?
Foe —Jasper is simultaneously satisfied and yet left deeply empty inside by her self-isolation on Earth, and doesn't understand how to even begin to process this dichotomy. (So she doesn’t.)
Letter — Young Greg's POV when he wrote those letters to his parents Steven found on Mr. Universe episode.
Sword —Connie interacting with someone she doesn't usually talk to by herself (ex Jasper, Bismuth, Lapis, etc.).
Reconciliation — Idk about you but I wanna see more Mega Pearl. The others have not met Mega Pearl.
Marks —How about... Spinel, and the tiny, everyday baby steps towards healing?
Tangled — Peridot finds out/is told about PD/RQ? (And is confirmed in her guess that Pearl is fancy...?)
Challenge* — How is Steven’s TubeTube channel doing?
Bruises — Priyanka tends to Connie's wounds after training sessions with Pearl. [Writer’s Choice]
Rest* — Yellow Diamond gets to relax. (She's the one who most expresses regret and real understanding. Let her take a nap! She deserves it!)
Barbecue* — Post-movie, during cleanup, Steven and Lars talk and plan the BBQ we got a glimpse at during the final song.
Ghost — Yellowtail and Greg talk about fatherhood and how it can be ruined (mentioning Marty and Greg's father subtly).
UNO* — Date between Pearls (platonic or otherwise).
Height — The pebbles!!! They're so small???? Where are they? *Sobs, points at the Heaven and Earth Beetles.*
Embrace — Steven gets a well-deserved cuddle pile from family and friends.
Constructs — Bismuth and Peridot have a lot more in common than they think.
Horns — Amethyst makes an unexpected new friend at Little Homeschool. (Whichever other character you feel would fit best!)
Garden — Pre-show scene. While having a funny chat, Greg mentions something that reminds Rose about her abandoning Spinel, which makes her regret more of her choices.
Advice — Garnet can tell when Stevonnie has a lot on their mind. [Writer’s Choice.]
Hum — Yellow and her relationship with music.
Love* — Pearl considering her romantic feelings towards someone and thinking about how she's finally moving on from Rose. (Doesn't mean she'll ever forget her.)
Kid — A glimpse into “Sadie Killer.” Maybe when they played their first show, while Steven was still in the band. Celebrating afterward or a discussion on why Steven didn't stay IN the band?
Troubleshooting* — Integration of gem communication networks and Earth Internet and phone lines and the resulting inevitable disaster.
Fairytale — Connie gets a tour of Little Homeworld.
Hope — Jasper finally starting to let her guard down and realize her self worth.
Song* — As for prompts... Steg? Like, him in general, just being himself. It's a bummer we only got to see him in the movie.
Mistakes* — Steven talking to someone (not a therapist, just another character) about his trauma?
Forgiveness — The Topaz fusion reconnects with the Crystal Gems at Little Homeschool and apologizes for her role in the kidnapping all those years ago.
Visions — Sapphire and Ruby reflect on the events of "Together Forever." [Writer’s Choice]
Reunited — Maybe a scene where Yellow comes home from a long escapade and is reunited with a worried Spinel?
Beginnings — After CYM, Lapis and Peridot discuss where to live since the barn is destroyed.
Pet* — White Diamond happily announces one day that she has decided to take in a small creature (of your choosing) as a pet.
Together — What were Doc, Army, Navy, and Leggy doing during Future?
Desert — Steven meeting Lion from Lion's perspective. I dunno, I think it could be neat.
Freedom — For a post-CYM/SU:F prompt, what do you think about the exact moment it hit either Blue or Yellow Pearl that they were completely free to follow their whims?
Apologies — Greg apologizes to Steven due to the incident in “Mr. Universe” and both have the talk they should've had in that episode.
Change — Blue and Yellow Zircon's relationship has improved even if they are now rivals in the new democratic Homeworld. This last tiny bit is related to the “Homeworld Bound” episode.
Hug — Bellow cuddling. Yellow has no idea what to do, but Blue is loving it.
Valentine* — Steven gives Peridot a Valentine's Day gift. [Writer’s Choice]
Spite — Aquamarine and Eyeball are distraught at knowing they won't be rewarded for their actions because their worst enemy, Steven Universe, has been labeled a hero and royalty by the Diamonds.
Reevaluation — How about more Peedee and Steven friendship? Like, Peedee noticing Steven’s change in demeanor the farther along the show we get?
Camp — Connie kicking ass at space camp.
Family — The night after the events of the movie, Steven gets some quality family time.
Homestretch — Peridot, Lapis, and Bismuth spend time together while preparing Little Homeworld.
Enough — We know what Jenny, Sour Cream, and Buck are gonna do for their futures, but what's Kiki been up to? Is she gonna take over the pizzeria?

Cake — Fusion Cuisine 2: Electric Boogaloo.
Belonging — The Rose Quartz sisters visit again.

Acting — How did Rainbow 2.0 even get invited to babysit Onion?
Kindness* — Former Mayor Dewey coming to terms with his new position in town.

Coping — Amethyst and Pearl grapple with Rose's pregnancy. [Writer’s Choice]

Fusions only have the part of their counterparts memories that they would share with eachother (Pearls fusions didnt know the truth about PD)
White creates pearls, but out Pearl didnt belong to her
Rebecca sings love like you while playing the guitar
Rebecca started playing guitar two years ago
The most reward thing about making the musical/movie was to work with so many talented people
It has been challenging for the crew not to give out spoilers
The trailer for the movie dropped (will be going over it seperatly)
Mr.Greg and ‘Just One Day Lets Only Think About Love’ were practice for the movie
Estelle sings several songs in the movie, including ‘True Kind of Love’, which was preformed live
True Kind of Love is now available, and the full moive album will drop Sep. 3rd
There will be more gem/human relationships
Pearl is exploring her own idependence
Amethyst was given a shelter upbringing by Rose in regards to her past, due to Rose wanting her to grow up apart from Homeworld
Stevonnie can fuse with gems, but likely wont, due to them being fine on her own
Rebeccas favorite ship is RubyxSapphire
Shelby’s fav fusion is Obsidian, and Deedee’s is Rainbow 2.0
The movie has new fusions
If the cast could be gems, Estelle would be a Peridot, Deedee a Diamond,  Michaela a Pearl, and Shelby a White Diamond
Rebecca had to fight not only to air, but to make the Ruby/Sapphire wedding
Change Your Mind was a personal song written by Rebecca in 2015 during the fight, and was added to the show last minute
Theres a flag for earth and homeworld at the temple
Human! Pearl would by just like Deedee, Amethyst would be from the 80s, Garnet would be  Grace Jones, and Peridot would live in a flying silver bullet in the Costa Rican jungle
Rebeccas advice to young creators is to just create whatvever pops into your head
She also says to get more sleep and to stop romanticizing suffering for your art
The hardest part of being a showrunner for Rebecca is to look after so many departments
Rebecca’s older brother Steven was a big inspiration for the show, and Steven Universe was a working title that stuck
A short clip from the Making Of the Steven Universe Movie aired, and the full hour-long documentary will be released on DVD and Blu-ray after the movie
And event know as Every Steven Every Weekend will start and run until the movies release

A Second Chance AU: Everything You Need to Know (FAQ)
Overview
A Second Chance is a Crystal Gem Spinel AU, starting 625 years after Pink left her in the Garden. The Gem War rages on, and Pink has decided to come back for her old playmate. This story will follow the events of the main series but with Spinel present. Doesn’t sound like much, but I can guarantee original content, new fusions, different arcs for canon characters, comedy (hopefully), and drama!
To know more- to either read up on the AU or go to the FAQ- hit “Read More”!
The Outline
I made a post that gives all episode titles that will be involving Spinel, which can be found below. Not all episodes are listed, just the ones that Spinel affects, and therefore the ones I am going to draw. The rest of the show still happens (unless I explicitly say an episode gets skipped).
Click here to read through the episode list!
FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)
Q) When will the comic update next?
A) Fridays WHEN I CAN! Not guaranteed! I did this so that it gives myself some room to breathe, since in the past, as soon as I gave myself a due date, I lost motivation AND pushed myself way too hard to get it done. No solid due date = still fun to work on, and I don’t need to worry about making sure it’s done on time! The less stress, the better. :)
Q) Can we ask Spinel questions?
A) You sure can! I just started a new thing on here called "The Ask Chair," which can be followed @the-ask-chair-asc-au. Any character that is currently present in the comic is available for questions, and this will change as characters move in and out of the story.
Q) How much of the main story will change?
A) At first? Not a whole lot. As the story unfolds? You'll have to see. ;)
Q) Will you be remaking the Movie and Future?
A) Yes! Of course, because Spinel is a Crystal Gem, the movie is going to be COMPLETELY different, but it will still occur! As or writing this out, I have a few ideas, but nothing is set in stone yet for the movie. As for Future, Spinel will have her “goodbye” episode, as well as an impact on the plot, but I’m not sure what yet. But I am planning to do that!
Q) Will Spinel fuse with _____?
A) This varies case by case, but I can say as of right now that there are certain fusions confirmed. Spinel/Amethyst (Lavender Alexite), Spinel/Pearl (Lepidolite), Spinel/Steven (Pink “Rubellite” Tourmaline), Spinel/Lapis (Kyanite), Spinel/Alexandrite (Zoisite), and Spinel/Obsidian (Onyx) are all canon, confirmed fusions right now. There are also a few noncanon fusions, most notably Ametrine, who is a fusion between Spins and Bismuth.
Q) She fuses with Lapis? But Lapis hates fusion!
A) Yes, she does. I realized a while after I first saw the movie that she and Lapis (and Future Steven) have a LOT in common. Lapis is traumatized by fusion, but the other gems are traumatized by stuff, too, and they all got to move forward, or at least were put on that path, and I want the same thing for Lapis. I want her to be able to move on. And no; her fusion will NOT just solve all her problems, or make her trauma go away. It will prepare her for going down that path of recovery, to be part of a healthy fusion based on trust instead of hatred. I am going to handle the situation as best as I can.
Q) Can Spinel fuse with _____?
A) Sure, if you wanna draw that. ;) But in all seriousness, I’ll probably say yes unless we’re talking about Peridot. Peri doesn’t want to fuse, and I respect that. She’s the aroace rep. I mean, I’m not completely against the idea, but that fusion WILL NOT be canon in any sense.
Q) Why do Connie and Spinel not get along? Why do Amethyst and Spinel not get along? What’s her relationship with Pearl? Does she hate Greg too? Does she like Bismuth? How will she feel when she fuses? Why-
A) Spoilers. Ask if you feel brave, but if your question sounds anything like this, it’s more than likely spoilers. UNLESS it is currently being addressed, in which case, Spinel MIGHT answer you, depending. ;)
Q) What does Steven give Spinel before leaving for his road trip?
A) Oddly specific question I’ve gotten at least four times. Answer is spoilers!
Q) Hey, Spinel! Did you know that Rose and Pink were the same gem? Also Steven is going to corrupt if you don’t do anything to help him! And Connie isn’t so bad! Also Lars dies and comes back! Steven turns himself in! Amethyst-
A) She doesn’t know these asks exist, and will not respond. Please do not try and spoil her own story for her. :)
Q) Where is the comic?
A) Here, or in the archive, @a-second-chance-su-au-archive. You can also find it by going to the tag #/comic or #/the comic (but without slashes).
Q) Who is Dimond?
A) Me! The name’s @dimonds456 (yes I’m aware it’s spelled wrong, that’s a choice). Nice to meet cha! I'm a bean who doesn't know how to respond to people liking my stuff aha.
Q) May I dub your comic?
A) DUDE YES. Just send me the link when you’re done, and tag me! I would LOVE to see people dub A Second Chance! Oh, and maybe let me know you're going to do so beforehand. This is not a pressure to finish, but more for me so I don't have to worry about whether or not you stole art lol.
Q) Can I submit fanart/fanstories/ideas?
A) Yes! A lot of this blog was built on asks, and a lot of my ideas come from other people. If you have a suggestion, feel free to reach out to me. And I will NEVER say no to fanart! I may not be able to properly respond, but trust me, I adore every piece I get.
Q) [anything aimed at me that is not Spinel/AU related]
A) I will answer you privately. Or, if you’re an anon, I’ll tell you to ask my main blog, @Dimonds456. This is a Spinel AU. If we go on tangents, that’s fine, as long as it stems from something AU related.
If you want to ask Spinel anything, go ahead. Just keep it SFW, and remember that we’re all here to have fun!

Happy asexual awareness week!
I wanted to celebrate with these aspec icons 🖤🩶🤍💜
Characters and their canon sexuality explanations under the cut!
From left to right:
And while I know that doesn’t really prove anything, I think it does add to my headcanon :)
Alastor - Hazbin Hotel: Canon asexual aromantic.

Okay, so we know that foreshadowing is a very common thing in Steven Universe.
It happens even in the littlest ways, like background details that often go unnoticed.
Some of us have noticed that Lapis and Peridot's gems have already appeared two times in the background.
Tumblr media
This is the first time it happened. Notice that the third picture is Ruby and Sapphire. (romantic love)
Tumblr media
This is the second time it happened. The third picture here is a portrait of a person, a mysterious figure. (fusion?)
I'm not posting this so I can say "Lapidot is confirmed!!1!1!" or anything like that. I'm just pointing this out and trying to analyse it in case it means something. What do you guys think?

Steven Universe Podcast: Battle of Heart and Mind
I don’t usually do this but I said I would for the server, so here we are.
This episode included Rebecca Sugar, Kat Morris, Joe Johnston, Matt Burnett, Ben Levin, and Ian Jones-Quartey.
·     The episode starts with the rainbow worm in Steven’s dream, who is voiced by Deedee. This is the last homage to the princess references in the arc. The worm is from the Kyanite colony and was brought to Homeworld by Pink, which Blue allowed, but then Pink released all worms in the ballroom. Rebecca mentions this links with Pink’s desire to be free by releasing animals from their colonies.
·   This specific princess reference was to Jasmine (in Aladdin) opening the cage and allowing the birds to fly free. It was also a reference to Pink’s love of animals and wanting to set them free, which isn’t out of character for Steven either.
·   For Diamond Days, they picked the most common princess tropes for Steven’s time on Homeworld and made this experience alienating for him.
¡   Rebecca states that the Diamonds are meant to exist as a body- the inspiration for the ship. Pink is the Id, Blue and Yellow are the Ego, and White is the Super Ego. This is represented in Change Your Mind where the collective mind experiences embarrassment when the Id demands they enjoy something.
·   Kat admits that they came up with the new outfits by continuously emailing each other with ideas. Rebecca said they considered everything but there were some concepts that they really wanted, for example, Rainbow 2.0 would have a scarf and a jacket. It was important either way that the fusions would notably have Steven’s clothes and the gems. However, the fusions would hint at the new forms and Pearl didn’t end up having a scarf, but she did have the jacket. Later, McKenzie asked if the jacket was a throwback to Bad Pearl and Rebecca confirmed that it represented her independence.
·   One of Garnet’s new designs included transparent glasses and Peridot’s glasses in the shape of a star. Kat came up with the idea for the shredded shorts and star pockets for Amethyst.
¡   All of the new outfits represent how the gems have changed and learned from Steven.
·   Rebecca mentioned that Pearl has been ‘playing the field’ and ‘exploring who she is’, which started in Last One Out of Beach City.
¡   Lapis has gold accents on her new outfit to match the real-life gem stone. Kat said that Rebecca really wanted the sandals for Lapis and it makes for comfortable cosplay.
·   Joe said that he enjoyed a lot of Garnet’s new designs. Most ideas were based off superheroes and had a more ‘knightly’ aspect.
·   They confirmed that they tried Peridot’s new design with star hair but it was too much. Rebecca said that the glasses already change her silhouette and expose her gem more.
¡   Peridot also has boots this time. Before, she had socks because she used to wear limb enhancers.
¡  Mary Poppins and Bert were the inspiration for Rainbow 2.0. These concepts were made by Joe around 2-3 years ago. Sunstone was a newer concept.
·  Rebecca said that all Garnet fusions can break the fourth wall, but with Steven, it would break it to give advice to children. The suction cups are also a combination of Steven’s shield and Garnet’s gauntlets. When creating Sunstone, Rebecca wanted her to look like a toy that you could stick in the back window of a car with suction cups.
¡  Alistair James auditioned for Rainbow 2.0 by doing an impression of his grandmother with a British accent. Rebecca said that Shoniqua was perfect and she knew immediately that she wanted her for Sunstone. She sounded exactly like how Miki Brewster pitched her.
·  For Obsidian, they’d had her concept from the very beginning since she was shown as the temple. It was a hidden in sight visual that would eventually pay off.
·  Obsidian’s sword is in the ocean, which is a part of the temple. It’s first seen in Bubble Buddies and seen again in Ocean Gem when the ocean is cleared. The sword design changed over time to ensure that all the Crystal Gem’s weapons could fit into the design.
·  The earliest inspiration for White Diamond is traced back to the beginning of the show. She was inspired by the film ‘A Story of Menstruation’, which was made in 1946. It was a film by Disney played in schools to teach children what to expect in menstruation, and the narrator’s voice was a kindly older woman. Rebecca said that she found the designs really interesting and cute.
·  From the film, the inspiration came from a scene where a woman cried into her arms but in the reflection of her mirror, she straightens up and starts smiling before going out dancing. The narrator says: “Don’t forget that people are around you and you’ll have to be more pleasant if you want people to like you”. The scene passes by and it ignores that fact that the woman was crying earlier, because she’s now seen being ‘correct’. This is the voice and the feeling that she went for with White Diamond and Homeworld.
¡  Homeworld is inspired by Busby Berkeley, and White is inspired by Hedy Lamarr in Ziegfeld Girl and Nell Brinkley drawings, all within an era where women were seen as beautiful pieces of furniture. Rebecca states: Women are like lamps, smiling and there, part of the scenery. It all originates from the idea that people thought it was lovely and seen as an escape from reality.
·  Those early inspirations were also used for the wall gems- the idea that people are in the background as if turned to stone and function solely as architecture. These faces we see in the architecture are gems and that’s their function.
¡  White has always been associated as a mother, especially in terms of her storyline with Steven in this arc, and how gems are viewed as her children. This arc wanted to begin to explore her relationship with them.
·  Rebecca says that White’s way of thinking is that she is everyone and everyone is her. She considers herself the default white light that passes through other gems, so when she sees gems absorb other colours from that light, she considers it a variation of her but lesser. In that way, she has no identity at all because she considers herself just light. She feels that people can be turned into her because they are all the same.
·  Rebecca also stated that White is wrong about how she views the world and herself. It’s an antithesis to Rose’s journey- expression and repression. She lives in a delusion that everything is fine but it isn’t.
¡  Matt and Ben said that the whole episode was balanced by ensuring that every single character got their moment. It was an accumulation of ideas from over the years that they tried to fit into one episode, such as Amethyst greeting Jasper after she was uncorrupted. They felt they did everything they wanted to do before they left.
·  All past episodes, especially for Diamond Days, were made to build up to the scene with White and Steven where she pulled out his gem. Mirror Gem is the first time they introduce the concept that a sentient gem can be trapped inside an object and that object is Steven. They’ve been planting hints that Pink may be trapped inside him ever since.
·  From the beginning, they’ve wanted there to be doubt that Steven was his own person and have the audience question if Pink/Rose could still be alive. Even when the gem was pulled out, they still wanted the viewer to doubt if he was Steven. They planted enough hints that the viewer would think it could go either way.
·  Between the crew, the hottest debates were about the storyline between Steven and Rose/Pink, about who Steven would be if they were separated. One of the most recent arguments was about Steven’s gem self and the fact he was devoid of any feeling, that there was none at all. That emotion came from Steven.
·  Rebecca had planned the split perspective scene since the start of development and storyboarded it early in the process. It’s still from Steven’s point of view. Ian noted that if the show wasn’t completely from his perspective, it wouldn’t work. The split perspective was to also represent how torn and disoriented Steven was in that moment.
·  Pink Steven is him as a default. If you take away his personality and emotion, he is empty. He’s been separated from his humanity and all that’s left is power. There have been nods to this in the past by showing how his power is greater because of his humanity and his capacity to love.
·  Ian said that Rebecca has always had the idea of the final confrontation being about Steven’s relationship with his powers and that connection showing who he really is. Steven wants that human side of him, even if it slows him down, because it’s what makes him who he is.
¡  The scene of Steven returning to himself was originally written for episode 10. It was going to be a part of Giant Woman where they establish fusion.
·  Rebecca confirms that James Baxter animated the scene where Steven reunites with Pink Steven. She met him by doing a drawing for his daughter’s birthday.
¡  The fusion sequence with the two Stevens was the ultimate princess trope- a rotating dancing scene specifically boarded by James Baxter. He completed the whole sequence himself apart from the inking.
¡  Ian mentioned that he wanted the uncorrupted gems scene for a long time. He said they always knew the arc would come back to the corrupted gems as that was the original conflict of the series, but now they finally get to see it through.
·  On top of that, Ian went through every single episode that had a corrupted gem and designed their healed versions, while Rebecca added some of the quartz designs. He mentioned that the longer they were in their ‘monster’ form, the more they will look like that form, even when they’re healed. That’s why several of the healed gems look more like their original designs.
¡  Rebecca added that Ian helped with the fusion designs and their sequence, as that was a wishlist moment for him. He wanted Steven to fuse with all the gems in a row.
¡  Ian said that he had been most excited about Rainbow 2.0 and that Colin Howard had done most of the groundwork already.
¡  Rainbow is they/them and he/him, and Sunstone is they/them and she/her.
·  Rainbow 2.0 is mixed with Pearl’s properness and Steven’s penchant for making jokes. Rainbow 2.0 loves to make puns and is a throwback to Steven’s puns in the earlier series. In the episode, Ian also came up with the idea that RQ 2.0 could ride their umbrella and have a rainbow shoot out of the end- a reference to Pearl being able to shoot lasers out of her spear.
¡  With Sunstone and Rainbow 2.0, they wanted to be able to show common traits in Sardonyx. The break in the fourth wall comes from Garnet, but loving to hear themselves talk comes from Pearl. Steven enables the both of them to embrace their silly sides.
¡  The ship foot falling on them was a slight reference to Monty Python but also a reference to the giant foot mentioned in Arcade Mania.
¡  Rebecca stated that the song Change Your Mind was not written for the show, but a personal song she wrote while fighting for the wedding arc. She was hesitant at first to include it.
·  Change Your Mind isn’t for the end of the Steven Universe franchise but for this arc, Ian mentions. He adds that even though it was written for the process of including the wedding, it perfectly captures the theme of the show. As a coming of age story, Rebecca notes that this is something that had to happen for Steven to start making decisions for himself.
·  Rebecca also admits it has been hard to write for Steven because he always puts others before himself. It’s always about what others want and what he thinks they want. However, he finally comes to a realisation in this arc that he doesn’t have to be anyone else other than himself or pamper to other’s expectations.
·  Ian states that this arc was incredibly important for Steven’s development, in terms of who he is, who he thinks he is, and who others believe him to be. Moving forward, everything will be different from Steven’s perspective. There’s going to be more but it will have changed, because Steven has changed.
If I’ve missed anything out, let me know. Hope you guys enjoy!

Also, side-note: I LOVE the fact Peridot is ace/aro representation, but when it was confirmed I was a little sad bc I had made a few fusions with her, Lapis, and Bismuth (my big ot3 before Future came out and galaxy brained BisPearl into existence. Just. YES. BisPearl is gr8) and I really love the characters. But I don't want to retract from Peri's ace/aro rep. RIP, Pyrite and Paraiba Tourmaline. The Lapis/Bismuth one, Cobalt, is still viable tho.
That's valid! And although Maya said that Peridot's aversion to fusion is a part of that identity--and as a touch-repulsed aroace I totally understand--it doesn't mean that Peri would never want to fuse under any circumstance ever. Like, I don't even like hugs and kisses from my own family most of the time, but every once in a while I need that kind of intimacy. Fusion is a way that gems can express intimacy, and like hugs and kisses, it can be either romantic or platonic, familial or friendly. As far as I'm concerned--and I'm by no means the fandom police--as long as you establish that it's platonic and they're gems Peridot is very comfortable with, it's fine. Peridot and Bismuth fusing, for instance, would be a lot like Steven and Amethyst fusing.

intimacy. (amedot one-shot)
One-Shot
Summary: After seeing how happy Amethyst was to be fused as Opal and being with Pearl, Peridot begins to question her own relationship with the purple quartz.
Word Count: 5624 words
AO3 Link: https://archiveofourown.org/works/24928966
Notes: Rated T for Making Out. This was inspired by Nerd_Peridot's fic 'Closeness' and the fact that Maya Petersen confirmed Peridot to be aroace.
Peridot watched her closely; curious green eyes tracking the rays of sunlight that seeped through thick silvery strands, tracing her lavender skin as it soaked in the sun’s kiss. She watched how the fusion moved- delicate, gentle, yet strong and steadfast. It was like watching a dance between two that was only shared by one. Leading the other within the smallest of movements, leaning into each other, pulling away, stepping forth, and then stepping back - following their invisible partner as if they were two opposites of a magnet.
The small olivine gem propped her chin on her two green hands, staring as the fusion continued to dance around, smooth and calculated but yet… so unexpected, carefree. The lavender fusion drew her hands upwards, pressed gently on her thighs to her waist, sliding carefully around her chest as it reached the back of her neck, playing with the back ends of her hair as her fingers danced with silver strands.
Peridot continued to listen as a boisterous laugh slipped from Opal’s lips, tumbling into the air in a mix of love and joy, flirting with the wind as their laughter carried on to Peridot’s ears. Somehow, it hadn’t fit in with the other voices: Steven, whose voice was powerful and light as he jumped around and yelled in glee. Garnet’s, who was as down-to-earth as always, her tone like an anvil sunk in the soil as she held a conversation with herself. Lapis's laughter, however soft, was recognizable from miles away. All of them were there and yet, Opal’s was the only one that Peridot could care to hear.
It was a beautiful melody, somehow. Not Pearl, but not Amethyst, either. Dark, smooth and rich, reminding Peridot greatly of something Steven had shown her once: Honey, was what he called it- the product of the earthly organisms called ‘bees’. At the time, Peridot regarded it as one of the greatest liquids she had ever seen on Earth, but now, she felt as if Opal’s voice would put any bees’ work to shame. A lovely voice embodied by someone bigger than both of her components, a perfect personification of the two, and everything their relationship stood for.
‘Perfect,’ Peridot thought. She frowned when Opal rolled into the sand, arms close as she held herself, laughing and smiling. They laid there, caught in something that one of them had said that slipped through every fusion’s cracks, fingers intertwined with their own.
‘Is that not love?’ She silently wondered. Peridot remembered asking herself that the first time she had seen them fuse. Was it not different from the love that held Garnet together for all of these years? The green gem could feel something inside her twist: she was very well aware of Amethyst’s past feelings for Pearl- the fondness that Opal was giving herself was undoubtedly her. Did Amethyst still love Pearl… like she loved Peridot? Was she reliving all of those feelings again in the fusion that was called Opal?
Peridot felt her mouth twitch downwards and her brows furrow. What was her relationship with Amethyst? She knew they were ‘together’, but… what did it look like, to her? Were they not ‘together’ like Garnet? Were they not complete without fusion? There was just something about Opal that made her stand out to Peridot and made her feel so inferior, so fearful, angry even. Peridot could not quite figure out why that was the case.  Maybe… just maybe it was the fact that Opal was a perfect mix of Amethyst and Pearl? A perfect representation of their relationship? Whatever it was that made her feel that way, Peridot happened to not like it, as she was reminded every second of it.
After minutes and minutes of watching the graceful fusion happily, almost lovingly dance and dance around, Amethyst and Pearl un-fused. They were no longer the experience that they shared together called Opal. Now… they were just Amethyst and Pearl, and a small part of Peridot was fairly happy that they were un-fused. However, the happiness she felt happened to be short-lived, as she now watched Amethyst and Pearl hold each other in the midst of what seemed to be a celebration, which happened to make her feel even angrier.
It… made her feel weirdly possessive. Peridot knew Amethyst wasn’t a prop or a prize to be won, but she felt like Pearl, Opal was taking Amethyst away from her… taking away her partner. At the moment, she felt so many things that clashed and conflicted with each other, and it all spiraled at once. Deep down, she knew she was being unreasonable. She knew she was being irrational. And she knew she was being illogical, but the more she watched and watched the two hug and chatter, the more the temperature of her face had risen.
After a few minutes of watching the pair, and trying to distract her heavy, constant thoughts with the gentle but uneasy ocean waves crashing into each other, Peridot’s emotions got the best of her, as she had now decided enough was enough. Peridot sat up from her position and then stood up, brushing the delicious and velvety sand off of her leggings. She walked across the beach, walking over to the purple quartz and the graceful Pearl.
“Oh hey, Peri!” Amethyst happily waved at the younger gem. Even though Amethyst looked exceptionally happy to see her, Peridot couldn’t help but question Amethyst’s relationship with Pearl. Peridot couldn’t help but question her very own relationship with Amethyst. Amethyst looked so incredibly happy to be with Pearl, she looked so happy being fused with Pearl. Did Peridot make her this happy? Who knew? Amethyst then gave the green gem a side hug by throwing her chubby purple arm around Peridot’s bare shoulder, pulling her in, “Did ya see us, Dot? Weren’t we so cool?”
Peridot didn’t react that much to Amethyst’s question, only shrugging and pushing Amethyst’s vastly-sized hand away. Amethyst looked bewildered, cocking her head, and narrowing her eyes as if she were puzzled by Peridot’s behavior all of the sudden. “Oh yeah… I suppose,” The technician faltered, avoiding making eye contact with Amethyst. She felt so ridiculous. She was so confused. Deep down, she knew Amethyst and Pearl were just friends. But seeing how happy Opal was to just exist made her feel quite uncertain. She didn’t want to push Amethyst away, but she didn’t know how else to act. All of this was so… illogical.
A small but perky laugh slipped from in between the folds of Pearl’s thin, soft lips. She playfully rolled her eyes, while she continued to smile down at the purple gem that stood before her, “Only because of your ability to live in the moment.”
A faint but clearly visible purple blush dusted Amethyst’s chubby cheeks while a small, boisterous laugh tugged at her plump lips. The little blush on her face began to spiral, grow, as she put one of her arms behind her head and managed to muster out, “Haha… oh well… I-I thought you were pretty cool too, P!” She timidly took a step back, now hiding behind many strands of her voluminous, lavender hair.
And for some reason this made Peridot feel even worse inside. She felt so infuriated. Amethyst was supposed to be HER partner, and she really didn’t want for Pearl to take that away from her. Peridot began to cling onto Amethyst, like a little girl who would cling onto her rag doll. Peridot began to rub her face against Amethyst’s shoulder with pure spite, hoping Pearl would get the memo. Peridot then buried her face in the hook of Amethyst’s neck, and began to brush and brush against it, as if she were a cat claiming its territory.
Amethyst seemed to take notice of Peridot’s sudden behavior change, as she had flinched and marveled, “O-oh someone’s pretty affectionate all of the sudden!” She placed her hand on Peridot’s head and began to rub her chubby fingers through Peridot’s pyramid of golden blonde hair. But as Peridot got more and more affectionate towards her partner by the minute, Amethyst seemed to become distracted from her conversation with Pearl. Amethyst faux cleared her throat and went on to say, “Hey P… It’s been a long day, and I kinda wanna relax now. So, uh, I’m gonna go chill in my room if that’s cool with you, y’know?”
Pearl’s eyes widened, seemingly surprised by the sudden change in Amethyst’s tone and behavior, “Oh?” However, that surprise quickly faded away, “That’s okay, Amethyst. I was planning to go out into town with Bismuth anyway.”
Amethyst gave the taller gem a small smile, “Thanks for being understanding.” As soon as Pearl walked off, Amethyst pushed Peridot away and lent her hand out to the green gem as if she was giving Peridot her own personal invitation, “Heh, y’know I wouldn’t go without asking ya first, P-Dot?” The tone of her voice changed to one that was seemingly mocking someone familiar to the two of them, “That would be simply rude. You are taking time out of your day just to visit me, after all.”
This got a small smirk, and somewhat of a giggle out of Peridot. Amethyst’s occasional dorkiness was just too adorable for her. Peridot took Amethyst’s offer by placing her hand on top of Amethyst’s and intertwining their hands, “Sure, why not?” Amethyst began to walk, taking the lead. Amethyst led Peridot up the wooden stairs, and through the halls of the newly renovated beach house, and to the crystalline warp pad which sat in the temple.
Upon walking up to the door that led to Amethyst’s room, the door split into two halves, with a wavy line and purple light appeared to have a slime-like texture. Entering Amethyst’s room, Peridot kept her smaller, green hand intertwined with Amethyst’s bigger, bulkier hand. Even though she and Amethyst had been partners for seemingly months now, meaning she had been in Amethyst’s room at least thousands of times now, her room was still such a sight to see.  Peridot felt she needed to examine it every time she was in there. The room was… incredibly chaotic. Frankly, it was a mess.
As Amethyst led Peridot further into the clutter and into the mess she called home, Peridot tripped over several objects that had been left out by Amethyst. The room had geodes and even some grass-like tiles. Although the room was quite disarrayed and normally that would bother Peridot, it didn’t. She thought it was exquisitely unique, and she thought it was part of what made Amethyst… Amethyst. Peridot continued to examine the room as Amethyst led her to a messy pile of pillows and blankets.
Once they arrived at the mess of pillows and blankets, Amethyst patted the middle of it as an implication that she wanted Peridot to lie down. Peridot reluctantly obliged and properly laid herself down on the mess, as she watched Amethyst climb on top of her. Peridot looked up at the purple quartz, while Amethyst tied her messy lavender mane into a ponytail. Amethyst was so, so beautiful, and normally when Peridot was in an affectionate mood, she would want to have Amethyst like this, but-- something was on her mind, something was bothering her.
Peridot could feel her cheeks burning up as she watched a small little smirk begin to form across Amethyst’s face. Amethyst’s face began to grow hotter too, while she noticeably but gently bit her bottom lip and tucked a thin strand of purple hair behind one of her ears. Amethyst then leaned in and started gently kissing Peridot, first a gentle one on her pointy nose, and next, a small kiss on her thin, green lips. But that small kiss turned into smooches, with Amethyst continuously kissing and kissing the other gem’s mouth. Peridot didn’t really feel much and didn’t seem to respond much, hearing Amethyst make soft noises out of pure bliss and pleasure while kissing her. Next thing Peridot felt was Amethyst’s plump purple lips against her sensitive green neck, gently and feathery but passionately, and intensely trailing down and down, moving to the crook of the neck.
But all of a sudden, the older gem stopped, quickly pulling away from the gem below her. Peridot felt surprised, as her eyes widened and her chest began to thump. “W- why’d you stop?” Peridot asked the purple quartz in a moment of panic, hoping she hadn’t offended or upset Amethyst. Out of new felt strong anxiety, Peridot held one of her hands up to her mouth and began to nibble on the tips of her fingers.
Amethyst’s blush grew. But this time, it wasn’t a flirty or lustful blush, it seemed to be a flustered blush. She buried her face into her hands, not hiding the fact she was obviously embarrassed about something, which happened to confuse Peridot even more. Amethyst then lifted her face up, making eye contact with the technician once again, saying, “I-I’m sorry Dot. It’s just, you seemed uncomfortable and I didn’t really want to push you into anything you weren’t comfortable with, so I… stopped.”
Peridot sighed in relief, but a small part of her still felt this sharp, pounding anxiety, “No, Amethyst, please do not feel like you have to apologize. I… I am absolutely fine. I guess that, I am not really in the mood for kissing right now due to how exhausted I feel.” Peridot paused and briefly looked off to the side, avoiding making eye contact with Amethyst, “I am fine with cuddling though, as that would be rather nice.”
A wobbly, unsure but strangely warm smile formed across the purple quartz’s face. However, that flustered blush she wore seemed to turn into a loving, admiring blush, as she lovingly stared at the younger gem. “Yeah... I’m fine with that, but…,” The bigger gem paused. Peridot could tell she looked hesitant, by the way she looked off to the side and the way the smile on her face faded. After a few seconds she looked back at Peridot, with a serious look on her face, “But if anything’s wrong, you really need to tell me, Dot... You and I both know keeping secrets from each other isn’t exactly healthy.”
Peridot looked away again, thinking about how happy Amethyst was with Pearl and questioning how she should go about this. Should she bring it up to Amethyst? Would Amethyst get upset with her? It…  wasn’t worth it. Peridot knew that what she was doing was unhealthy, but a part of her was afraid Amethyst wouldn’t take it very well and would lash out at her… just like Lapis did. Only seconds later, she looked back at Amethyst, a faux smile covering her face, as she gently took the other gem’s bigger hands and said, “Listen… Amethyst, I appreciate how protective you are of me and how caring you are, but I am certainly fine. As I have stated before, I am just not in the mood for kissing right now. Okay?”
“Ugh, I know, I know. I just can’t help but worry when ya start acting weird though. I know most of the time it’s you not wanting to be affectionate and I am totally okay with that, but… sometimes I get the feeling that you’re genuinely upset about something or upset with something I did,” Amethyst explained to her on why she was so worried and seemingly obsessive of Peridot’s comfort. Amethyst then tucked a strand of lavender behind her ear and timidly peered down.
“You worry way too much about me,” Peridot lovingly smiled at her. A part of her was starting to trust the purple quartz, trust that she only loved her and that she was happier with her than anyone else. That she was over her feelings for Pearl. But another part of her, a quiet, silvery voice, kept telling her that her relationship with Amethyst would only feel secure if they fused, because… that’s what Amethyst wants. Right? Peridot continued by saying, “And, don’t get me wrong, I definitely appreciate that quality about you. How protective you are of me. However, I’d like to assure you that nothing is wrong and there is no need to worry about me.”
“Ugh, I know,” Amethyst rasped, then pausing as if she were taking the moment to think about something. She  frustratedly buried her face into her hands, “Gross, I’m starting to sound like Pearl with the nagging and being overly protective.” And after a moment, she lifted her head from the palms of her hands, sighing, “Can you believe it?  Maybe it’s because she and I have gotten closer… Y’know, Dot… Pearl and I weren’t always buddy-buddy. I know I told you at one point I thought she was kinda cute and I wanted to get to know her more, but, before you came around, Pearl and I were always at each other’s throats. I guess she was having a hard time with losing Rose, and we’re two very different people. But, it took us actually communicating to understand each other, and I’m pretty happy about that. If it wasn’t for Steven, I… wouldn’t be as close with Pearl as I am today.”
The faint but noticeable smile on Peridot’s face washed away, as the mere thought of Pearl or even the mere mentioning of Pearl’s name fairly upset her at the moment. Yes, she was happy for Amethyst, well -- at least she wanted to be, but she could not shake the overwhelming feeling of prolonged jealousy. All of the events that had taken place today and prior knowledge of Amethyst’s feelings towards Pearl just made her feel like she needed to compete with the elegant Pearl for the quartz’s affections. Peridot let out a long, mellow sigh, “I am happy for you, Amethyst.” Afterward, she paused and then went on to say, “Is it… would it be okay to cuddle right now?”
“Of course Peri,” Amethyst smiled, as she lifted her hand to caress Peridot’s face. The older gem lied down on her side, gesturing for Peridot to get closer. This was quite normal for them -- cuddling and holding each other. Sometimes Amethyst would be the one holding Peridot, other times it would be Peridot holding Amethyst. Peridot took a long moment to slowly lay down on her side and gently wrap her green arms around the older gem, squeezing her like she was a cuddly teddy bear. Peridot’s face was now pressed up against the other gem’s back, as she watched Amethyst drift deeper and deeper into sleep. It was usually easy for the gem to fall sleeping while holding Amethyst because she was usually so relaxed. However, this time felt different… It was as if she couldn’t stop obsessing over Opal, over Pearl, and over Amethyst’s relationship with her. And by the time she was able to drift off into a light sleep, she came to the conclusion that… Maybe the best option for their relationship to feel secure, was for her to fuse with Amethyst.
------
It was the next morning, Peridot left after a few hours, as it felt necessary for her to go back to Little Homeworld and tend to her duties. Amethyst knew Peridot played a huge role in the foundation of Little Homeworld and she understood that. Amethyst woke up to hearing the rippling, soothing noises of the waterfalls actively flowing in her room, and then sat up from the pile of blankets and pillows she slept on, picking up her phone in the process. She had gotten one a little while ago she could keep in contact with the other gems and Steven when needed. The first notification that appeared on her phone happened to be a text from a familiar green gem.
Amethyst’s eyes narrowed, her head tilting in a swirl of newfound confusion. Peridot had asked her to meet at the very top of the hill that overlooked the crystal gem temple, but… what for? Peridot didn’t seem to specify why. But then again -- Peridot behaving weirdly was quite normal for her, so she was fairly used to it by now. Maybe she just wanted to hang out again, so what did Amethyst know? The purple gem stood up from her place and started to brush through her tangled mane of lavender hair, making sure it wasn’t that messy for Peridot’s liking.
After getting somewhat ready for her day with Peridot, she headed off to the given destination on foot. Five minutes later, she arrived. All she saw was Peridot, just standing on the edge of the hill, with a weird look on her face. Peridot’s look of seriousness, only frightened and confused Amethyst, even more, seeing as all of this behavior came off as vague, unsettling. Amethyst tried to act nonchalant about it, putting one arm behind her head and taking a step towards the green gem, “Yo, Peri. I’m here. Is… everything alright?”
Peridot looked down, making it hard for Amethyst to read whatever expression she had on her face. She shuffled her feet around and put her thin, green arms behind her back like she was exhaustively nervous about something. Peridot looked back up after a few moments and put on a small, nervous smile, enthusiastically saying, “Everything is more than okay, Amethyst!”
Amethyst’s face crumbled a bit, knowing something was up. However, she brushed whatever concerns she had aside for just one minute and wrapped her arm around the other gem, pulling Peridot’s body only inches closer to hers. “Is that so, huh?” The purple gem asked, in a seemingly sarcastic but also low, sultry tone of voice. “I couldn’t really tell with the oh-so-serious look on your face, hehe,” She teased Peridot while twirling a strand of lavender around one of her fingers
Peridot pushed her arm away, taking a step back from the purple gem. Amethyst’s chest heaved, thumped, hoping she hadn’t just messed everything up and made Peridot uncomfortable. The technician brushed off her leggings as if Amethyst had gotten something on her,  and looked at Amethyst with a serious look again, “Actually, there is something I wanted to ask you…” Amethyst then watched the green gem slowly get down on one of her knees, as if Peridot were going to propose to the purple quartz. Amethyst’s chest thumped even more because if that were the case, Amethyst knew she wasn’t ready for something as serious as marriage and she didn’t think Peridot would truly want something so serious. Her fake heart raced and raced, feeling like it was on the verge exploding while she waited for what Peridot was going to say next. Peridot looked up at her, with the widest smile covering her face and this huge blush, “Amethyst… would you be willing to fuse with me?”
A wave of the sudden surprise hit the quartz. All of this felt superficial, surreal. Peridot never asked to fuse with her before, in fact, she was pretty sure that Peridot truly didn’t want fusion. Amethyst knew she was rushing into things and she couldn’t figure out why. Only one thought ran through her mind and that was; Why now? All she could manage to do was muster out an awkward, “Haha, what?” The purple gem’s awkward laughter turned into serious, deep laughter, her face turning from a lilac purple color to a deep, dark purple. She laughed and laughed -- finding Peridot’s dorkiness to be too adorable for her taste. Amethyst laughed so much that her stomach actually began to hurt, and… to the point where she failed to realize a look of hurt washed over Peridot’s slim face, with green gem’s eyes narrowing and her fists clenching.
“...Amethyst!”
The older gem flinched, surprised by Peridot’s sudden outburst. Was she actually being serious about fusing? Did she really want this or was she just saying that she wanted this? Amethyst took a step back from the younger gem and could only seem to say, “...Huh?” Amethyst then took her lavender bangs and hid them behind her round purple ears, looking at Peridot straight in the eyes, her eyes sparkling with an unfamiliar sense of fear and suspense.
Peridot’s eyes widened, now fully realizing she had just yelled at Amethyst. However, that shock faded soon enough, her face transitioning from a look of surprise to anger. Peridot knew the damage of her yelling at Amethyst had already been done, so she felt that there was no going back. “I’m-I’m being serious!” Peridot yelled, throwing her arms into the air in pure frustration. She then took a step back and crossed her green arms, clearly upset with Amethyst’s reaction to the big question.
Amethyst’s chest raced, scrambling for something, anything, to say to Peridot in response. She now realized Peridot was being serious about wanting to fuse, and she almost felt bad for laughing at her. Her eyes narrowed, and it had looked like she was about to be poofed. “What’s… what’s gotten into you all of the sudden?” The purple gem shuddered, suddenly sounding hurt by Peridot’s outburst.
Peridot let out a long, frustrated groan, running her smaller green fingers through her pyramid of golden hair. She sighed, her eyebrows furrowing and her pointy nose wrinkling while she did so. “...Whatever do you mean by that?” The technician asked, in an almost passive-aggressive tone of voice.
“Ugh! I knew something was up with you!” Amethyst chastised the other gem. Both of her eyebrows pulled down, looking at Peridot with her glaring eyes and her pursed purple lips. She didn’t want to be upset with Peridot, but she also didn’t want for Peridot to lie to her. She thought Peridot trusted her, and it hurt her deeply that she didn’t. “You were acting totally weird last night and all of a sudden you say you want to fuse with me? Like dude, what?”
“Say?” The younger gem inquired. Her behavior then changed, seemingly within a flash. She gave Amethyst a loving smile and took a step forward. Peridot took Amethyst’s hand and gently squeezed it, softly saying,  “Amethyst, I DO want to fuse with you.”
Amethyst firmly pulled her hand back from Peridot’s hold. Even though she could see how hurt and rejected Peridot looked at the moment, she knew taking that action and being firm with her was for the best. A long, soft sigh slipped from her plum-stained lips, “Peridot, you just think you want that… I know you, I know you don’t want that. You’re only saying you do to…”
“To… what?”
“Ha, I dunno…,” Amethyst shrugged, looking off to the side and crossing her bigger arms, “To… prove something to me?”
“W-what?” Peridot asked, with a look of shock painted on her face. “I’m… I’m not trying to prove anything to you!” The green gem denied, making frustrated hand gestures as she continued to argue with Amethyst. Peridot then buried her face deep into her palms and huffed. Peridot looked back up at the purple quartz and took off her golden-shaded visors, revealing a big pair of green eyes.  “...Why can’t you just trust me with this?!” Peridot questioned, her eyes glaring with hurt and anger.
“It’s not that I don’t trust you, I do. But… I know you Peri, and I know fusion or anything y’know… too imitate can really make you uncomfortable,” Amethyst explained. She began to bite the tips of her fingernails and slouched a bit as if the confrontation between her and Peridot was starting to make her feel a bit anxious. Amethyst didn’t want to make Peridot upset or fight with her, and she hated seeing Peridot so frustrated, but she just wanted to do what was best for her partner and her relationship. Amethyst sighed, “Look -- I just don’t get why you’re interested in fusion all of the sudden… and I really don’t want ya to do something you’ll regret or feel squicky with.”
“Uncomfortable?” Peridot wondered out loud. She began to laugh, and to Amethyst, it seemed fake. It seemed… painful. Amethyst’s stomach twisted into knots as she watched Peridot laugh, because she knew deep down, it wasn’t a genuine one. “...Amethyst, you are clearly not understanding my motives here!” Peridot exclaimed, gently taking Amethyst’s hands again. “I want to make you happy! And this being the ultimate endgame for a relationship would absolutely do so!”
“The… ultimate endgame?” Amethyst queried, slightly tilting her head to the left in even more confusion. What did Peridot even mean by that? But then it came to Amethyst -- Peridot was talking about her fusing with Pearl the other day. Amethyst rolled her eyes in annoyance, “Wait… don’t tell me… is this about Opal? DUDE, you know I don’t feel that way about Pearl anymore or anything like that…”
“Amethyst, I knew that,” Was all Peridot could simply respond with. Peridot paused and peered down, making it hard for Amethyst to read her expression. All Amethyst knew that Peridot was incredibly embarrassed now that she had been called out for her behavior. “You just seemed… so much happier with Pearl, when you were fused as Opal. And I thought, as your partner, if I could do that one thing to make you happy, then all of it would be worth it.”
Amethyst smiled and put her hand up to Peridot’s face. She reached forwards and brushed her hand against it, getting a soft purr out of Peridot. “Peri…, You know how much I care for you, but… I don’t want you to risk your happiness just to make me happy,” Amethyst softly breathed. Amethyst took that same hand and put it under Peridot’s cheek, gently lifting her head up, “That’s not healthy dude… and you know that.”
Peridot watched Amethyst let go of the delicate hold she had on her chin and began to twiddle her two thumbs, the blush on Peridot’s face becoming clearly unmistakable now. “I just thought… maybe our relationship would be perfect if we… fused…,” Peridot sheepishly whispered, obviously feeling embarrassed by how emotional she became over all of this. Peridot could barely look at Amethyst straight in the eyes now, without feeling overwhelmingly ashamed of herself, and Amethyst knew that.
Even though Amethyst knew Peridot felt red-faced and fearful right now, Amethyst couldn’t help but chortle, a soft partly laugh slipping from the folds of her lips. That soft laughter turned into a deep, loud hearty laughter. After a few seconds of giggling at how all silly all of this was, the purple quartz stopped and sighed, “You’re… such a nerd… Peri -- no relationship is perfect! And, we don’t hafta fuse to make our relationship any stronger. What we have is already great, and the form of intimacy that we share together is already enough for me.” Amethyst paused, and looked at the other gem with a soft look in her big, deep blue eyes, “If I felt otherwise, I woulda told you that or even worse… left.”
Peridot’s brows arched with sadness, feeling like a complete idiot for this taking all of this so far. She felt so silly, and she feared Amethyst viewed her that way now. Peridot shamefully looked down at her two feet, “You’re right,” She somberly agreed. Then, Peridot felt a rush of anger strike her. However, she wasn’t angry at Amethyst, she was angry with herself, for how she acted. Peridot facepalmed, “Ugh, I feel like such a clod. I… really don’t know what got into me. I just saw how happy you were while fused as Opal, and I guess, it made me think I was not good enough for you. That the way I treat you and love you were not good enough for you.”
“Peri… you’re more than enough for me. You’re my best friend, and you’re my partner. This is gonna sound so cheesy but I don’t care… You mean the world to me, and I hate that ya ever thought otherwise… but I get it. I get being jealous, and I get feeling like you’re not good enough but…,” Amethyst blissfully rambled before coming to a sudden pause. She looked off to the side for the second, as if something else caught her attention, and she then looked back at Peridot, “Please believe me when I say that I love you. I know I don’t say it that often because it makes me feel squicky, but… I love you, Peridot, and I really hope you know that.” Amethyst put her hand on Peridot’s cheek again, gently cupping it.
Peridot’s heart melted. It was music to her ears to hear that Amethyst felt that way of her, and all she could do at the moment was nudge her face into Amethyst’s hand. The way she felt about Amethyst was so complex. It wasn’t just platonic, but it wasn’t anything too romantic. After a few seconds of leaving the purple quartz waiting, a soft whisper slid from her thin green lips, “I… love you too.”
Amethyst let go of Peridot’s cheek and left a soft, tender kiss on the cheek that she had been holding, then casually walking off. This confused Peridot, as Amethyst walking away from her, felt out of nowhere. However, after a second, the older gem paused, realizing Peridot was not following her. Amethyst looked at Peridot, with a smile forming on her face for what felt like was the millionth time that day, and leant her bigger hand out to her, “You comin’?”
Peridot gave the older gem a soft, loving smile. Peridot took her hand, slipping her smaller fingers through Amethyst’s bigger fingers, and lightly squeezed her hand, making Amethyst’s gem feel warmer inside. “...Of course.”

Can anyone with Steven Universe End of an Era help confirm some stuff for me? So I have an ongoing collection of every gem/fusion ever seen or mentioned in or out of show/game/comic! So far I have Albite, Chrysocalla, Grossulare Diopside (aka Titanite), Aventurine, Moonstone, Blue Chalcedony, and White Topaz! It's still early enough in the comic, you could still make Agate just friends who like fusing a bunch and maybe respect the canon a little. :/ Just a suggestion.
Okay, so, here’s the thing… Fuck off.
This isn’t “just a suggestion,” it’s a passive aggressive attack on my AU and my person. You are simultaneously saying my AU can’t differ from canon and that I am being disrespectful just by saying Agate is a romantic relationship. I’m not thrilled about either of those things.
So I wasn’t going to comment any which way on this topic other than confirming Agate is a romantic relationship, but, since people want to stir the pot, I’m going to come out with it. It’s under the cut because it’s long because I have some feelings.
First off, I’m ace and my boyfriend and I heavily suspect that I am aro, too. And once we figured that out I started doing some research. And it turns out, and I know this might shock some people, just like ace people aro people can have deep, meaningful, loving, long term relationships. It’s a spectrum, and everyone is different. Some Aro people don’t, some do. Aro people can still have partners that they deeply love, they can still get married, they can still have families, etc, etc. They might not feel romantic attraction in the same way as other people, but they can still have love. So saying that Aro characters can’t be shipped at all is a fucking slap in the face to the Aro people who do have partners and families and shit and do love them, even if it’s their own kind of love. When I started thinking I might be aro, I talked to one of my best friends about it, and she told me her own mother is like this! She doesn’t have that “spark” kind of love, but she still very much loves her husband, and they’ve been together for a really long time! Like, at least three decades now!
Second! When I watch Peridot in SU, I assumed she was ace for sure, but she always seemed like she could have those deep, meaningful relationships (and possibly even fuse one day!). They even hinted at her having a crush on Amethyst! I believe another infamous storyboarder even said so (or at least that’s how they personally perceived/wrote the relationship). I recall there being quite a bit of controversy about that particular storyboarder’s reveal, too. Being Aro isn’t something I predicted, as you can tell by the fact that my Agate exists. It’s an interesting thing to hear, and I feel like it’s important to people who need that kind of representation… but you know… I kind of felt the way it came about was a little inappropriate. It’s not something that was reflected in the show and it absolutely should have been. It actually felt, reading Maya’s tweet, that she seemed bitter about it not being in the show. It didn’t feel like she was revealing the information with the best intentions in mind. I also feel like this is information that should have waited until after the show was over, because now we have a pretty reliable (but not 100% official) source telling us that nothing is going to happen in the show. That’s a pretty big spoiler, imo. And I know, the rest of the episodes don’t really seem set up to allow for much more character development outside of Steven, but this even negates a surprise kiss in the final hour kind of thing (whether with Lapis or Amethyst or whatever.) Not that I expected that, but now we can’t expect anything. I also feel like this is the sort of thing we should have heard from Rebecca herself, not Maya.
Note: I have no ill will towards Maya. I’m very happy that she has this character she identifies with and I have no intention of bashing her as a person, only the way that this information came out.
Third, the way the tweet was worded lumped Fusion in with Sex and Romance, and that’s not good. Not good in any capacity. This is a mentality that a lot of us fans have been trying to fight for a long time and this feels like a MAJOR setback in that department. We absolutely CANNOT equate Fusion with Sex and Romance because of Stevonnie, Steg, Rainbow, Sunstone, Smoky, Obsidian… the implications are horrible if Fusion = sex and romance. The tweet should have been worded better on that end.
Finally, and most importantly: THIS IS AN AU. The relationships are different. The characters have different histories, different motivations. This is how many, many AUs work. Not just in this fandom, but pretty much every fandom. The entire purpose of an AU is not to follow canon. Telling someone they have to follow canon in an AU is fucking ridiculous. As for Agate, specifically, in this AU, to be honest? I’ll straight up say that you wouldn’t really know the difference if Peridot was aro or not because of the way I write Peridot. Amethyst is the more affectionate one in this relationship. She’s more likely to initiate kissing, hand holding, stereotypical romantic stuff. Peridot is more likely to participate, and do romantic things that make Amethyst happy, but she does it for the same reason I do with my boyfriend… he’s romantic (extremely so) and it makes him happy when I do things like tell him he’s handsome and stuff. Our love languages are different, and he has to be mindful of mine, I also have to be mindful of his. It’s give and take, and it’s something we’re working on together. Actually, thinking about it, Amethyst and Peridot is kind of like my relationship with my boyfriend. They’re kind of like our Ruby and Sapphire for Rebecca and Ian! This is a revelation I’ve had just now. Fun!
In conclusion, fuck off with your passive aggressive bullshit. I respect that she is most likely AroAce in canon and won’t end up in a romantic relationship with anyone. I will be okay with that, and I will be happy with that. But this is my AU, it does not follow canon rules, it has existed for almost a YEAR before this Tweet and you’re an asshole.

Accidental fusion with spinel infront of the gems, while having those cookout things
omg omg omg I LOVE THIS PROMPT.... And to really get in a kind of mood to write it, I listened to “Echoes of Friendship” from the movie soundtrack on repeat so many times omfg...... ‘Your pov’ doesn't change when you fuse! And I hope I did it some justice!! :’)
“I missed you.”
Spinel turned to you with a look of surprise but it was quickly replaced with a bashful smile. There was a shy laugh in her voice, “Awh, you did?”
“Of course I did! How could I not?” You perked up as she settled in the grass beside you, relishing in the breezy sunset air of Beach City, “We all did.”
Spinel was quiet for a short moment as she studied you. She looked back at the Crystal Gems and the humans as they clustered relatively close together in front of Greg’s van and near the grill on the open beach. You watched her quirk a brow up at them as she studied them all individually for a long moment before she turned her head back to you and gazed at the ground by your feet, “They did? Are you sure? I know they probably still don’t trust me . . .”
You smiled at her, hoping that the small gesture might help her relax, “Of course, Spinel. Everyone here wants to see you happy.”
Her eyes met yours for confirmation and she scrunched her face, glancing away again and blushing like mad. Then she scooted closer to you and leaned her head onto your shoulder, and you reciprocated by resting your head on the top of her’s. She sighed peacefully and you couldn’t help but think to yourself how much happier she seemed now. In the last few months since she first came to Earth, Spinel had grown into a much softer person than she once was. She was still just as lively as she used to be of course, but she only really showed that side of her to the gems (and humans) she grew close with over time. Her relationship with the Diamonds had its ups and downs every so often (which normally resulted in her making surprise visits), but overall she seemed to be growing brighter everyday. And you couldn't be happier for her. (Little did you know, she felt an immense amount of affection for you as well!)
“Hey, guys!” Steven called from behind you. Spinel pulled away and whirled to look at him immediately. He was sitting in the sand between Connie and Amethyst, “What're you doing all the way over there?!”
You let out a laugh, “We were just talking! We’re coming!” Slowly you moved to stand and then you offered the pink gem your hand to help her up as well, “C’mon.”
She gave you another small smile and you felt your chest swell with affection as she took your hand. When you pulled her up she glanced ahead at the others and you broke into a light jog toward them with Spinel following closely behind.
Beside the group, Peridot was using her metal-wielding ability to make a few cans of baked beans hover above a little fire pit she had put together. Lapis sat beside her eagerly watching. She was much better at controlling her ability by now, but when she tried balancing too many at one time, the cans started to wobble in the air and she let out a shriek of alarm when she lost control of a couple of them. Two of them shot randomly to the side and Lapis managed to block one with one of her wings, but the third shot outwards and straight in your direction. She clutched the edges of her visor and let out another shriek of warning.
You didn’t have the time to even blink before you were wrenched away from it’s path in an instant. Spinel’s arms had coiled around you faster than you had ever seen or thought possible, and she herself spun away a few times before coming to a halt and squashing you against her protectively. You looked up at her face as you felt your own cheeks flush, but she glared through slitted eyes back in Peridot’s direction for what didn’t even really feel like a second. After you heard Peridot shriek a jumbled apology, Spinel turned her attention back to you and her expression melted to one of concern.
She was so pretty, honestly. And you couldn’t help but let out a snort at the sight of her so close to you. She looked confused for a short second but soon she wasn’t able to hold in her own laughter and she held you a little closer without even realizing herself. Then without warning, a bright light enveloped your vision and you could almost feel everything melt away and yet become whole at the same time.
A few moments of silence passed before you were confident enough to open your eyes again. At first it seemed like something was glittering in front of your line of sight until your eyes focused in more on the group ahead of you. Gazing at them curiously brought you a random, strong pang of anxiety as they all stared with massive eyes and gaping mouths in complete silence. The quiet that dragged on felt like it was taking forever so you attempted to break it, “W- what?”
As the Crystal Gems continued to stare, Steven suddenly burst with excitement, grabbing his hair in his hands as stars glittered in his eyes, “Ohh myyy GOOOOSH!" Behind him, Garnet beamed with a bright smile and she brought her closed fists to her mouth excitedly. Pearl, Amethyst, Greg, Lion and Connie all stared at your form in amazement (and probably disbelief), and beside them Bismuth, Peridot and Lapis all stared in gaping wonder. Peridot threw a hand out to point at you and she shrieked at Garnet, “How does this keep happening by accident with you people?!”
Some part of you started to squirm uncomfortably at the sight of every single one of them staring right back at you, but you couldn’t quite put your finger on it until you looked down at your hands.
Except they weren't your hands.
You let out a yelp of alarm and jumped, checking yourself and your unique new features over and over again before you realized the truth with a jolt, “Oh, holy-” A bright smile covered your face and your eyes lit up with excitement, “We fused!” And suddenly a shiver wracked your form from the inside out and an overwhelming sense of fear and anxiety pulsed through you, pooling in your gems, “We . . . we fused?!” You could feel yourself start to unhinge and at the mix of conflicting new feelings you tried to hold it together at first, but nothing changed the dreadful thoughts that began to flood your thought process. You squeezed your eyes shut but you could still see a brilliant white flash when you quite literally fell apart and crashed back down into the ground a few feet away from each other.
Steven was still exploding with excitement a couple paces away when you used your wobbly arms to push yourself off the grass below you, “Ouch.” You noticed immediately that you felt like yourself again, and that whatever anxiousness you were just experiencing had dissipated completely. You felt fine, in fact you felt wonderful! You had just fused with–
At the mere thought of her, you whirled around in excitement, “Spinel, are you okay?” You smiled at her, but it faded rather quickly when you watched her shiver as she stared back with wide eyes.
She leaned up a bit from her spot in the grass but she was still visibly and noticeably shaken from the experience. She held her face in her hand but her eyes were open behind it and her mouth opened like she wanted to say something, but nothing came out. You moved closer to her and she looked at you with those wide eyes filled with uncertainty, “I’m sorry!” Her voice cracked like it always did when she was under a certain amount of stress.
Immediately you were at her side, gently resting your hands on her arm and on her back, “No no no no, don’t be sorry, why would you be sorry? We fused, Spinel! It’s a nice thing!”
She looked away and slowly pulled away from you again, “Wh- I . . . I’ve never done that before! What if I ruin it again like I did just now?” She clenched her fists and squeezed her eyes shut, “What if I hurt you? Wh– what if–?”
“Spinel,” your voice was gentle but stern and it immediately caught her attention, “It’s okay.” You rubbed circles into her back as the timid gem sucked in a breath, rubbing her left eye in the meantime to wipe away its wateriness. You glanced toward the others who finally looked like they were starting to actually come to terms with the fact that you had just fused with her, but Steven and Garnet were clearing still jittering with excitement. You turned back to Spinel and you let your voice drop down to a softer tone, “We don’t have to do it again if you don’t want to. But . . . thank you for at least trusting me enough to try.”
Her eyes glittered with emotion as she stared at your flushed face. Then her expression softened up a bit and her shoulders relaxed. She reached for your hand and you helped her up, and then neither of you let go once you were standing. Her other arm reached up to the back of her neck and she had a hard time looking you in the eye for a few seconds but when she did, you could see her cheeks light up a bit, “Yeah.”
Another fresh wave of affection pooled in your gem and you pulled her gently in the direction of the others. Spinel closed most of the distance between you two and she coiled her own arm around yours as you made your way back to the group, “Thank you.” Spinel leaned her weight into your side as she murmured the words.
A smile graced your face for the millionth time that night, “Always.”
