“What was that for?” Viktor asked softly. Jayce smiled wider, tilting his forehead against Viktor’s. “I was happy, I guess."

The red lights turn off. The controls go dark, joysticks limp in Al-An’s grip. The headlights shut off. The thing lets them go. Whatever it was. Wherever it had come from. It lets them go and disappears, and the only reason Robin can even tell is because that blue mouth and red markings vanish somewhere out in front of them. And then it hits her. They're dead in the water. Dead, five hundred meters down, in a pitch black cave, with a tank that gave them less than four minutes of air and a sea truck cabin with a steadily depleting oxygen supply. A sea truck that was extremely damaged, maybe unrecoverable, but thankfully, for the moment, didn't seem ruptured. Logic. Panic kills. Need logic. Robin tries coaching it into herself, but somehow isn't able to. Just feels the fear gripping the both of them, the adrenaline causing her body to shake and leans into it. Doesn't mean to, doesn't want to, but there's not a lot of positives at the moment. The flashlight is blindingly powerful in comparison to the previous darkness. Al-An holds it in one hand and tries pressing the ignition with the other, but all that happens is a soft clicking noise when the button is pressed. The engine's aren't online. They've probably been torn clean off. Logic. Al-An’s good at logic. Al-An can handle it. "Robin, calm down," Al-An's suddenly saying. Harsh, maybe without meaning to. He sounds stressed. Speaks through gritted teeth. "You're going to cause us both to panic."

Listen, as a Megatron and Breakdown lover, I hate that Dreadwing is in 4th place of having a big spike. Mans is MASSIVE. I am a Megatron small spike truther and Breakdown is p big not overtly big.
I am a believer in nonhuman anatomy for Cybertronian spike and valve builds. Dreadwing def is girthier than most and would have a knot. Additionally, he'd have lil bumps on the head. Sorry, I just love Dreadwing and he needs a defender like I.
going feral over this message I love designing weird spikes/valves for Cybertronians (each unique to every bot) - so I'm losing it over the spike to spike communication this message invokes. Dreadwing deserves all the love in the world and thank you for agreeing that he'd have a knot and a big spike. The honor is stored in the dick

I'm actually beginning to see the pushing of women out of the computer field in the 80s as actually downstream of very few of the things you think caused it
What is showing up for me is that it's inseparable from the general de-industrialization of the US and the scaling back of the MIC in a lot of surprising ways Basically, I'm working with the idea that women actually got pushed out downstream of that; this is a mass displacement event of men, and those men had to go *somewhere*
90s Office Job Gothic as a trope really nails this for me because what moderns don't understand is that midcentury saw that work as actively emasculating, or even women's work. Office Job Gothic shows up so heavily in the culture right at the point where PCs are taking over a lot of tasks and the typing pool has disappeared.
Moderns don't understand that computers weren't the aspirational job for normal men (no, that was SALES! You have no idea!) in the midcentury, let alone even for the first half half of the 80s (and still not very cool until later), nor do they understand the degree to which non-elite women basically got displaced out of office work as it rebranded, nor the degree to which women office workers ended up totally displaced unless they ~Learned To Code~ (which worked for some of them up until the dot bomb, it worked for me) or competed in narrowing and more specialized ranges of office work
#I am beginning to think more regular women may have actually done office work during the Mad Men era than later and that we've papered over#mass female job displacement with the fact that women had to go back to school to keep the same jobs they'd already had#and we've massively yassified this#but the reality is that lots of women who would've been in a typing pool in the 60s or 70s would be folding stuff at Ross now

feeling the overwhelming urge to write a deeply self-indulgent doctor who/star trek crossover fic right now, because you know who else would fall so fucking hard for the master's goofy little spy schtick? julian bashir, that's who.
#dw#it would have to be early seasons bashir though#bc he's like 'oh boy an evil bisexual alien that's exactly my type'#whereas later seasons bashir would be like 'i already have multiple morally ambiguous secret agents gagging for my dick'#'plus there's a war on and i'm busy. pass'#it practically writes itself#while escaping from the crashing plane the master accidentally teleports himself to some random human occupied space station#crashes to the ground in a flash of white light and knocks himself out. he's wearing his tux from the party fucking OBVIOUSLY#gets carted in to sickbay. they may or may not be able to identify him as an alien but he sure LOOKS human#and when he wakes up he's like. i'm agent o from mi6. from the year 2020. i'm very confused but harmless for sure!#and dr julian 'james bond fanboy' bashir is like I RECOGNISE THAT ACRONYM‚ IT'S MY TIME TO SHINE#this mysterious time displaced 'human' is my new best friend and also there's someone i've GOT to introduce him to#there's a bit of a hiccup when it turns out o is very well aware of aliens and in fact keeping track of aliens is his whole job#seems like he's from an alternate timeline where first contact happened WAY earlier#but julian 'geek social fallacies' bashir introduces o to garak like you guys are both spies so you'll get along right?#and garak (who knows a liar when he sees one) picks up on some bad vibes immediately#and is like doctor i can't get a read on what his deal is but do NOT trust this man#plot twist though the master talks him around and it's actually garak who sews that plaid suit of his.#anyway. this is very silly#under no circumstances am i actually going to write this i'm just rotating it in my mind

2024 reads / storygraph
Salt Houses
historical fiction
follows 4 generations of a Palestinian family from Nablus between 1967 and 2014
uprooted and grieving after the Six Day War, they start to build a life in Kuwait, until they’re once again displaced in 1990 and scatter to Paris, Beruit, Amman, and Boston
different chapters from almost every family member’s perspective, skipping years in between
explores complex family dynamics, grief, and loss of home and identity through displacement
#Salt Houses#aroaessidhe 2024 reads#palestinian books#this was really good. ough.#a range of complex characters and family relationships; they all felt so real.#the parallels and contrasts of the different generations at the same age (especially the women)#and getting different perspectives on things decades later that they never really discuss#definitely the perspective of a wealthier family who's able to have relative safety yet the displacement still has such a significant effec

Re: the last post I reblogged -
I can't help but cynically wonder if some of the intense antisemitism that has come from the LGBTQ+ community over the past few years or so comes down to resentment.
I've seen multiple people on Twitter/X insist that Jews are "white people who want to be oppressed so bad" and are "constantly playing the victim" - and I can't help but wonder if a great deal of the white LGBTQ+ community has internalized that kind of hatred about themselves and project their anxiety onto Jews.
To Jews, a Jew is a Jew. But I've seen multiple queer people express anxiety over their fear of "not being queer enough" or "not doing enough for the queer community" which sounds...exhausting. On Tumblr alone, there's so much bickering and gatekeeping on who gets to 'count' as a member of the LGBTQ+, who gets to identify as what, what spaces you can and can't walk into. Sometimes it feels like a new version of Catholicism.
White guilt often leads to anger and resentment. On the right, this resentment is amplified and, instead of unpacking their privilege and addressing the past, they use their identity as a shield and project onto Jews as being the cause of their woes ("Jews will not replace us"). After 10/7, I see that a similar feeling exists amongst the left as well.
#May lock this post later i dunno#I'm just throwing ideas around#But my core thought is#white gentiles on the left and right hate themselves and displace that anger onto us#Also this is talking about the US specifically#But I figured that was obvious from the context. ^^;

black sails ending possibility #72: whether or not silver successfully 'unmakes' flint doesnt matter because it turns out that after spending a decade in asylums and prison camps thomas has also gotten radicalized as fuck and immediately reverses all of silver's efforts
#im sure there are already fics like this#i just love the idea of james thinking he's changed too much and that he can't give up his new worldviews even for thomas#only to discover that thomas has also changed in the same direction and is the first to suggest drastic action#the political situation in early colonial georgia is quite unique. i would imagine it would have an impact on someone so justice-oriented#...ofc this implies that the obvious original tragedy is semi-displaced into a Secret Second Tragedy later on#we know what happens to flint by the beginning of TI after all

Thinking about how when I was in middle school I thought I was the most original person in the world for coming up with the idea of cave elves in some intense political fantasy story I was writing only to find out that I did not in fact come up with the concept of cave elves and the high political drama of elves bring displaced and crammed into cities and discriminated against was literally exactly the setup of dragon age origins
#i was soooooooo mad when i played dao the first time bc i was like FUCK MY IDEA ISNT ORIGINAL ANYMORE#my world was basically dragon age but closer to the industrial revolution and with cave elves instead of regular elves#they were displaced from the caves they lived in because the surrounding cities wanted to mine for raw materials bc of the new high need for#metals due to the changing technology#so after displacing the elves they then hired all the elves as extremely underpaid and exploited miners#my story took place one generation later so now theres a bunch of cave elves who were born in the city and their perceptions of home are#different from their parents bc theyve only ever known the caves as a source of money and also torment#but thats all just the backdrop for the actual story that would be taking place which was all about learning to trust and finding a personal#identity once you heal from your traumas

"Scholars often dismiss physique references to ancient Greece as a mere ruse or rhetorical framework--a "classical alibi" or "discourse of validation"--to avoid censorship. But an examination of the lives of the founders, contributors, and members of the [physique studio and pictorial] Grecian Guild [1955-1968] tells a different story. The Grecian Guild was instrumental in helping a community of men struggling to find a discourse to explain and valorize their sense of themselves, particularly men outside of urban gay enclaves. Benson and Bullock [the founders of the Grecian Guild] took a discourse about ancient Greece that gay men had been using for nearly a hundred years and gave it mass distribution. They used it like gay men used reference to "the Greeks" or Mary Renault novels--as a way to signal their homosexuality. It was a rallying cry that brought in customers and helped them imagine a better world. As historian and biographer Benjamin Wise argues about the way Alexander Percy used the language of Hellenism, it was "a way of speaking out and covering up at the same time."
Invoking classical traditions in order to make an argument for gay rights has been largely forgotten in the twenty-first century, as such a line of argumentation has become politically and historiographically problematic. Indeed, much of modern LGBT historical scholarship and queer theory has asserted that a homosexual identity is a creation of a modern, capitalist world--that homosexual behavior in ancient cultures was understood in very different terms from the way it is today. Invoking classical antiquity also smacks of a Western bias that privileges European ancestry over other cultural and historical influences. Such arguments also raise the specter of pederasty and pedophilia--or at least age-discordant relationships--that play into the hands of gay rights opponents who relentlessly use the argument that gays recruit children to fight gay rights measures...
Despite these changes in cultural understandings and sensibilities, the use of the classical Greek trope to name gay organizations, periodicals, and commercial ventures continued for decades, even when the need for an alibi had eroded if not disappeared. The lambda or lowercase Greek "L" became one of the primary symbols of the 1970s gay liberation movement. During this same period Seattle's largest gay organization was the Dorian Group, and a Jacksonville, Florida-based gay magazine called itself David--a reference to Michelangelo's Renaissance statue--an indirect link to the classical tradition. Like the Grecian Guild, David offered membership in a fraternal organization with features such as a book club, a travel service, conventions, and even legal aid. As an online website, it continues to serve as one of Atlanta's premier LGBT news and entertainment sources.
...
While severely limited by the forces of censorship, the desire to create opportunities for customers to correspond, meet, and get acquainted attests to the palpable wish of gay men to connect with each other during this period. If few members attended a Grecian Guild convention, the possibility of doing so resonated widely. As a teenage Grecian Guild subscriber in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, Michael Denneny read the articles so carefully that he underlined the important parts. "That was proto-political organization, the agenda was very clear to me, and I think to everybody else who joined," Denneny remembered..."These magazines were really important to me," Denneny recalled. "They brought this whole possible world into being, which I'm not sure I could have visualized otherwise."
David K. Johnson, Buying Gay: How Physique Entrepreneurs Sparked a Movement
#queer history#thinking about aang and zuko's connection to the deep past#aang's strange displacement from his people and history#that means he has this distinct lived connection to a by-gone civilization and idyll#and then zuko's obsession with the air nomads#going to all their temples#and in the natla collecting all the nomad and avatar relics#then later their exploration of the sun warrior past#another ancient civilization whose philosophies they seek to adapt#and how both of these relate to aang and zuko's exploration of their gender and alternatives to contemporary masculinity#these fascinations with lost civilizations bring aang and zuko together too#and even force them to address assumptions about age-differences...#just a lot to unpack#just about how exploring other cultures and history thoroughly dislodges one's construction of reality#and opens up possibility
