i dont consider myself a 'fashion guru' by any means but one thing i will say is guys you dont need to know the specific brand an item you like is - you need to know what the item is called. very rarely does a brand matter, but knowing that pair of pants is called 'cargo' vs 'boot cut' or the names of dress styles is going to help you find clothes you like WAAAYYYY faster than brand shopping

i had a thought of "do people not know what AUs are anymore?" and then i remembered nobody explains fandom stuff to new people anymore so it is entirely plausible people genuinely don't know what AUs are and nobody has explained it to them, so for today's lucky 10,000:

"AU" stands for "Alternate Universe" or "Alternative Universe" (same difference) and is basically any thought scenario for a fandom that isn't canon and can't fit within the canon universe. If it takes place in the canon universe but something is notably different, that is typically what's known as a "Canon divergent AU," because it diverges from canon.

an AU can be absolutely anything. There's a couple of widespread pan-fandom au scenarios that often get thrown around, like coffee shop aus, genderbend aus, hanahaki aus (hanahaki is a whole thing in itself i'd recommend researching on your own), etc. One you might hear sometimes is "crossover AU" which is when you have characters from one fandom interacting with characters from another.

You can have as many aus as you want. They can be whatever you want and you can do whatever you want in them. It's a sandbox for you to play around in and explore how things would be different or how the characters would act in those circumstances or environments. Maybe they have different relationships with each other. Maybe they behave slightly differently. Or you can just say "Okay, [x] is true. How did they get here? How would things have to be different for this to occur?" which can also be fun.

If you are ever confused about why people ship something that seems completely out of the blue or doesn't make sense to you in the canon setting, there's a good chance they like it in an AU setting! Not everything everybody is interacting with is necessarily the canon! Not everybody wants things to exist in canon and just want to explore playing dolls in a different sandbox and that's okay. And their sandbox might look a lot different than yours, and that's also okay. You have the freedom to make your sandbox whatever you please. Do whatever you want forever. Get funky with it. AUs are fun.

I'm sorry for pontificating from down here but the US military-industrial complex is currently supplying a genocide, and this is not a new thing, the US has sold weapons to Saudi Arabia to starve millions of Yemenis, the Iraq war, the Afghanistan war, these are within memory. And though some people think it's not the point, it Is also true that there are trillions upon trillions of dollars that could be spent in anything else that go to the black hole of corruption (and call it for what it is, corruption) that is the Pentagon. Any of those resources could be destined to literally any other activity and be better spent.

I'm talking full contempt here. You should outright be HATING the military. Instead of lining up to watch Top Gun you should see it as a glorification of a fucking killing machine that serves imperial interests, enriches megacorporations and supports genocides. For the love of God be more angry about it. Goddamn.

rewatching Avatar is so weird because Sokka is literally the only thing keeping them alive and fed. He constantly is like,

'guys we're out of supplies/ we need to stop/ we're attracting too much attention with the flying bison we should walk' etc.

Like in the ´The Storm' when they're completely out of money and supplies the one to get a job in hopes of making money (he never actually gets paid, the world hates him) is Sokka.

In 'The Waterbending Scroll,' it's Sokka who's concerned about their lack of supplies when Aang sends them in a wave down the river, and is making sure they're careful with their spendibg when in town shopping.

He's also seen to catch fish and gather nuts (I know more often than not he fails to catch things on screen but it's implied he's the one that does most of the hunting and gathering)

It's like- Aang totally would have starved to death or gotten completely off track with often they're completely out of food and money

What’s the most niche Splatoon lore you know?

by me saying the niche lore, it ironically stops being niche. I think the stuff that stays niche despite me talking about it is info about like. graffiti. ppl dont care as much about graffiti. so here's something absurdly obscure about one piece of graffiti, that from here on will become slightly less obscure.

remember this guy from the ROTM trailer? cute piece of graffiti. known as FLDRHTS-FOAB at Hotlantis. in english we can easily assume FOAB=Fish on a Bike. but apparently this fish guy has an actual punny name in japanese! and the way JP fans had to find out what its name is is fucking batshit. at hotlantis in JP it's called HI-CKU, with HI being short for the JP name of flounder heights, and CKU is....??? people weren't 100% sure. people didnt learn its name until midway thru 2023, when this guy appeared on some merchandise for a Splatoon 3 lottery at 7-11. so the fish guy's name is on this packaging right?

no. it's not. you wanna know the only place where this fucking fish's name is????

its on the box for the entire merch lot. i'm pretty sure you would have to either be a 7-11 employee or somehow personally buy up all the lottery prizes from the source to get this box. (image source)

these boxes is how JP fans were able to learn that this fish on a bike graffiti is named Charikogiuo チャリコギウオ. there's probably something i'm missing with this pun, but I know charinko is another word for a bicycle and uo is fish. [EDIT: kogi is the verb stem for "to pedal". so its 'bicycle pedaling fish'] people joke about the absurdity of splatoon lore drops in limited time exhibits or japanese magazines that would never be seen by english fans if it wasnt for me translating it WINK WINK but this shit is beyond parody. deserves a prize for being both extremely pointless and coming from a terrible source.
