angst, hurt no comfort
₊˚⊹⋆
you’re sitting on the edge of the camp’s strawberry fields, the sun dipping behind half-finished cabins and the warm breeze sticking the hair to your tear-streaked cheeks. you’ve been here every evening for weeks, since leo flew off in that stupid bronze dragon, with that stupid hero grin, promising “i’ll come back for you, babe. i promise.”
your friends tried to pull you away. piper brought you food. nico sat with you in silence. even chiron told you to rest. but how could you rest when your boyfriend was out there alone? when you replayed that moment over and over again: his smudged cheek, the smell of fire and metal on his jacket, the warmth of his mouth on your forehead right before he left you standing in the fire of everything you thought you’d build together.
it was stupid, waiting. pathetic, even. you told yourself that some nights. that you were foolish for believing in promises made by a boy who burns everything he touches. but still, every sunset found you here. just in case. just in case he needed you like you needed him. just in case you mattered enough for him to keep his word.
and when you hear the roar of festus on the horizon, that familiar clatter of gears and bronze wings beating the sky apart, you feel your lungs collapse. hope is cruel like that. it gives you the impossible and makes you think it’s just within your grasp.
you stand. you run. the sun sinks behind you as you trip down the hill, half crying half laughing. your breath burning in your throat. you picture how it’ll feel when he jumps off that dragon, how his arms will wrap around you, how he’ll smell like campfire smoke and safety and the home you built in the lines of his palms.
you can already feel his arms around you, smell the grease and engine oil on his shirt. you want to bury you’re face in his neck and tell him how much it hurt, not knowing if he was alive or dead. how you’d do it all over again, to wait for forever just to get him back.
but hope is a liar.
festus lands by the fire pit in the middle of camp, with a thunderous clash of metal and earth. dust kicks up, stings your eyes but all that matters is that you’re leo was okay. you squint, hand shading your face, searching for his messy hair, that bright grin. and you see him.
leo jumps off festus’ neck, boots hitting the ground hard. his grin is so wide it almost splits his face. he looks like a hero, your hero. messy curls, cracked goggles pushed up his forehead, and that stupid grin reaching his eyes. relief washes over you, until your eyes slide past him.
there’s a girl beside him, curled into his side like she’s always belonged there. her hair absorbs the sunset like spun gold. her dress looks out of place against the oil stains on his shirt, the dirt under his nails. she doesn’t let go of his hand, not even when they climb off festus together. she looks up at him like he put the stars in the sky just for her. he looks back like he’d do it again.
gods. you know that look. that look used to be yours.
your stomach flips. you don’t want to believe it. the part of you that’s still soft and stupid thinks maybe it’s not what it looks like. maybe she’s someone he rescued? a lost girl, a damsel, nothing more. but then he brushes her hair out of her face and behind her ear, murmurs something you can’t hear, and she laughs. she laughs and leans into his shoulder, and you feel the earth tilt under your feet.
he doesn’t let go of her hand, not even when talking to chiron. the same hand that used to slide across your waist like it belonged there.
piper finds you first. you don’t even realize she’s there until her hand wraps around your wrist, gentle, like she’s trying to anchor you before you float off into the dark. her eyes flick between you and leo, and that girl, and her lips part around your name like an apology and her face fills with empathy.
leo doesn’t see you yet. or maybe he does, and he’s pretending you’re not there. it’s worse when he does look, because when his eyes land on you, they widen for half a second, like you’re a ghost he forgot he’d left behind. he opens his mouth. your name hangs there, a promise half choked.
but he doesn’t let go of her hand. that’s what kills you the most. he doesn’t drop her. doesn’t run to you. doesn’t look sorry enough for the way your heart splinters in your chest like a glass dropped on concrete.
your throat clicks when you swallow. it tastes like metal and salt. your fingers curl around the hem of your shirt the one he used to wear when he slept in your bed, burning hot beside you, mumbling half-dreamed words about the future you’d build together.
so you do the only thing you can, you turn. you walk back through the circle of campers, each step pulling at the seams of your heart, unraveling everything you tried to stitch together while he was gone. you don’t run. you won’t give him that. you won’t let him see you break.
when you reach your cabin, you shut the door and lock it behind you. you stand there, forehead pressed to the wood, fists balled so tight your nails cut crescent moons into your palms. you try to hate him. you try to hate her. you try to hate yourself for waiting.
but in the end was it really his fault? because promises are just words, and words burn out. especially when the boy the you love is made of fire.

chapter thirty-eight | headlock
Tumblr media
You sit up so suddenly that your forehead collides with someone else’s. Groaning, your hand on your head, you open your blurry eyes and blink until your vision returns to normal.
The sky is still bright. Someone’s used Percy’s burial shroud as a pillow for you, where it rests on the floor, balled up. Your head hurts, though you can’t be sure if it’s from smacking against someone else’s, or if it’s from passing out.
“Well,” someone chuckles with humour, “that’s one way to wake her up.” They extend a plastic bottle down to you, shaking it impatiently. Clarisse is standing above you, laughing. “Take it, then!”
You’re aware of water dripping down your face, but even more aware of the parched feeling in your throat. You remember you barely managed to get breakfast, never mind a proper drink. If you went and checked your levels now, they would scream dehydrated.
“Are you okay?” Annabeth crouches with concern, laying a hand on your shoulder. “You fell pretty hard.”
“Yeah.” You cough to clear your throat, dancing your eyes around the small group. “I feel…fine…”
He stands at the back, with his hands in his pockets, head ducked awkwardly. There’s Annabeth next to you, Clarisse in front, jabbing jokes (although, that look she’s trying to cover up might be worry), and then there’s him. Percy Jackson. He glows with health, and even looks a couple of inches taller than he did the last time you saw him. That might just be because you’d been cloaked in the dark tunnels though.
“You’re not dead.” You blurt, without thinking. “You’re not dead.”
“Great, right!” Clarisse slaps a hand hard on your aching head. You wince, leaning back. “I’ll grab us some food. You look ashy, and I’m starving after the show.”
Ouch. But food would be nice. You feel your stomach eating itself, and sigh.
“So,” Annabeth breaks the ice. “Percy isn’t…gone after all.“
“I feel like I’m in a bad dream,” you raise your eyebrows and shake your head slowly.
“This is a good thing…isn’t it?” Annabeth nervously looks between you and Percy. “This is…Percy’s breathing! Yay!”
“Where were you?” You ask. “I waited for you.”
“Oooookay,” Annabeth pats your shoulder. “Let’s get up. We can talk about this somewhere more comfortable.”
So you move to the Big House. The whole time, Percy can’t look you in the eye, always focussing on your shoulder, or just staring at his feet. He answers Annabeth only in short words and humming replies. It strikes you as weird because Percy’s a talker.
Inside, Chiron fixes you a glass of water and a snack, and tells you to sit on the couch before you fall over again.
Then the interrogation begins.
“Where have you been?” You demand, swinging your hand around so violently the water in the glass spills over on to the carpet with a thud. “We spent weeks thinking you were ten feet under and then you just show up like, what? Like you’re the guest of honour?”
Leaning on the arm of the chair opposite, Percy crosses and uncrosses his arms, mouth opening and closing when he thinks better of whatever he was about to say. Chiron, the silent observer, clears his throat.
“I’m sorry,” Percy mumbles, “I got lost.”
You splutter for words, throwing another tip of water on the carpet. Chiron buts in, pushing a mediating hand between the two of you. “Now, now. This is a shock for everybody, I know. Drink your water, dear. You’ve barely woken up.” As if that’s the reason you’re in shock.
“I’m sorry,” you sigh. “Just…you’ve been gone for weeks. What happened? You sent me away and then…”
At last, his vibrant eyes meet you. Freckles have come out, dark against his tan skin. Percy’s mouth twists, he looks away almost in guilt. Instantly, your stomach grows heavy, your eyes harden in suspicion.
“I caused the explosion at the mountain,” he starts, “that was my fault. There were too many of them there—monsters, I mean. I blew the place up, and I thought I’d died. But I woke up in the middle of nowhere, my skin was burned up, and everything was hurting. And, well, that was it. The island healed me up, Hephaestus dropped by to see how I was doing, sent me home when he was ready, and here I am.”
You grit your teeth. You don’t move. You don’t blink. Annabeth shifts on the back of the couch, taking the glass from you.
“And where was this ‘oh magical island?’?” You pry. “You Must. Have. An idea. Right?”
“I—I don’t know. I just woke up there. I think Hephaestus sent me there to get better.” Percy avoids you again. Chiron has grown very serious.
You sit forward violently. “Hephaestus who can’t acknowledge his own children, sent you to a magical island to get better,” you emphasise each and every letter, “out of the goodness of his heart—AFTER, might I add! AFTER you blew up his forge?”
Chiron snaps your name angrily. It might be the first time he’s shown any sort of anger towards you that you can remember.
“I know how it sounds,” he raises his hands in a placating manner. “Just hear me out before you go trying to kill me, please. It sounds ridiculous from an outsider’s point of view, but trust me on this. When he came back for me, Hephaestus, he told me that we can get through the maze.”
“Oh, you want to go back down?”
“What did he tell you?” Annabeth sets a hand on your shoulder, cutting you off from saying anything further. “What’s next?”
“Well he sort of told me that I already knew how to get through the maze. At the time I wasn’t sure what he meant. But now I do.”
“So what’s the answer.”
“We need a mortal. We need a mortal’s help for this,” he grimaces at the look on your face. You can’t explain what look it is, though. “Just like Theseus had Ariadne’s help originally.”
“I’m sorry,” you snort. “Are we forgetting whose quest this is? Why are you calling the shots?”
Chiron looked uncomfortable. “Did you have any particular mortal in mind, Percy?”
“Yeah, I do, actually,” he laughs lightly. “She’s called Rachel. She lives in New York. A while back I ran into her a couple of times, she has enough Sight to help us with this.”
You see red. “This is my quest. We all understand that don’t we? I was quite literally chosen for this. Why are we giving away this to some random girl in the city?!”
“I understand how you’re feeling,” Chiron manages, “This is your quest. But you need help.”
“Oh, and this random girl is supposed to help?” You flat your hands. “Please! Can’t you see how bizarre this is! It’s wrong! It’s cowardly! It’s—”
“Hard to admit we need a mortal’s help,” Percy cuts in gently, frowning. “But it’s true.”
Falling silent, you drop back into the chair, suddenly tired. Raising your gaze from the carpet, Percy is still looking at you, with a little bit of sorrow in the guilt. He looks away, and Annabeth pats your shoulder.
“Want me to leave you to talk about it?” She says. You can feel yourself falling away very quickly from the current scene, the situation becoming that of background noise, like you’re in a bubble. “I’ll go check on Clarisse?”
“If you could, please, Annabeth…”
So she does. Which leaves yourself, Percy and Chiron to talk things over.
“We can talk later about your—choices, Percy,” Chiron coughs. He addresses you briefly. “But this is your choice, if you should go on with the quest, my dear. Your choice only. As only Percy has returned thus far, I will allow you to choose another person to accompany you the rest of the way, should you choose to go.”
Your head snaps up. The line between your eyebrows appears again, so close to turning permanent. “What?”
The air stills. Chiron side-eyes Percy briefly. “Three people is right for a quest. You first chose Grover and Percy. Since Grover has, circumstantially, chosen to leave for the time being on his own journey to find the god Pan, it is only Percy, and yourself, now,” he says somewhat disagreeably, like even he can’t comprehend how the situation has turned to this.
“Wonderful,” you snap, “that’s—that’s brilliant. Supposed we’ll have to have Rachel Dare’s help then, won’t we?”
‘Three’s a crowd’ sits on your tongue. You don’t have the guts to say it just now. Percy tips his head down, and waves of immaculate hair tumble with the movement. You find yourself transfixed on it, and not in a good way. You don’t need a mirror to understand the firm, and angry look on your face. Something scratches in your stomach, bothering you deeply. On the arm rests, your hands clench at the material. You don’t blink. Don’t even move. What did Chiron say? Something about Percy’s choices. Percy’s choices…
Had he chosen this?
You eye the silver line in his hair. Was this, weeks of torment and starving and hunger for something not edible but emotional all Percy’s choice? Were you but a knock-on effect in the sea that was Percy’s choices? Had he really chosen your sleepless nights and hungry stomach and teary eyes over something he refused to disclose? Without so much as a sorry?
Percy’s choices led you here. They always had, of course. Because now you’re thinking about it, it was Percy who chose to sit next to you in class, to enter your life. It was Percy you were with when you found out you’d only known half a life, the other beginning at Camp. It was Percy who took you out of the equation for his first quest, and Percy who, by Chiron’s choice of words, made a choice that caused him to disappear for weeks on end. He came back, why? Had he come home only because you were the afterthought filling him with guilt? Is that the look in his eyes and on his face? Is it eating him up inside?
Yes, you hope.
You hope it is.
The most awful part of you hopes it is hurting as much as it hurt you to think he was dead and buried somewhere you’d never reach again.
“Let us not burn a hole in Percy’s forehead,” Chiron jokes with mirth and worry, reaching forward to unfurl your fist. “You should get something to eat. The girls will be waiting for you. I have to talk to Percy.”
Not even a sorry, you think, getting to your feet again. He doesn’t look up, not even when you open the door. Not even a sorry.
Tumblr media
You don’t find Annabeth or Clarisse. You go back to your cabin, have a total nervous meltdown, cry a lot, and fall asleep in your bed, tired, until nightfall, when the others fall in after dinner. Nobody’s surprised at all to see you curled up in bed, but a few people were nice enough to bring back a good plate of food and a bottle of water.
Sometime around midnight, when everyone is asleep, you climb out of bed and pull on a sweater over your pyjamas, pulling on the hood strings as you step out and close the door silently behind. It’s not a good idea being out after lights out—the harpies go insane, and the creatures in the forest come out with confidence. But there’s something magic in the way their bioluminescence creates pockets of light in the trees, and the sound reminds you of movies. If you look past the potential danger those little creatures possess, it’s really beautiful.
But they’re not what you’re looking for right now.
The lights are out in every cabin but one, whose very essence seems alive now the only inhabitant is home. The light coming through the curtains is warm and dull but there, like the beating heart of the building. At the door, you hesitate. Is it worth talking to Percy? Has he bothered with you? But you’re here now so you may as well.
You knock three times and take a step back, waiting. Percy drops something inside, and before you know it the door opens. He’s still wearing today’s outfit of shorts, t-shirt and jacket, but you don’t feel embarrassed of standing before him in your old pyjamas and Hollister sweater. Percy blinks like a deer in the headlights, his mouth opening and closing but not saying anything.
You inhale deeply. “Imgladyourenotdead!”
He comes back to normalcy. “What?”
Exhaling, “I’m glad you’re not dead.”
“Oh,” he pauses. “Me, too. I mean I’m glad you’re, like, here. Not that I’m not glad I’m not dead. Which I am glad about, but—”
You break out into a smile, which causes Percy to relax. His shoulders grew softer and deflate, and a dopy smile replaces his deer look. He steps back and opens the door wider, inviting you in. You accept his offer.
There are pieces of paper strewn all over the floor by Percy’s crumpled up bed sheets, hanging half off the bed. You can’t quite make out what the papers say, the majority of them balled up or ripped to shreds. A water bottle lays leaking on the floor; that must have been what he’d dropped. Greek letters on one of them, but you’re not close enough to read it. You’d learned in high school that Percy was dyslexic, and never figured it was a big deal. For Percy, coming to Camp and realising his brain was hardwired for Greek and Ancient Greek over English; everything made sense. He still struggled with it at times, but you’d noticed the improvements.
“I’m sorry,” you squeeze out. Apologies have never been easy for you. “About earlier. Being so angry. I was just…shocked. You know, we really thought you were gone forever. Thought I’d have to wait a couple decades to see you again Downstairs.”
Percy hums. “I’m sorry. I really am. I didn’t mean for, well, all of this. I tried to get back. It was just out of my control.”
You turn from the papers, walking backwards until you sit on Percy’s bed, listening intently. “Where did you go?”
He opens his mouth, but looks away, and pauses. “I don’t know. Some island. Like I said, Hephaestus sent me there. He didn’t explain much to me. I just woke up there. The island healed me.” His words are heavy and meaningful, and you can almost convince yourself he’s telling the truth. But you know he isn’t. You know Percy.
You only nod, slowly, watching him nervously look away.
“You look…” he trails.
“Like a sack’a bones?” You laugh through your nose. When Percy goes to protest you simply shake your head. “It’s not a lie, Percy. I was worried sick. Literally. I didn’t want to believe you were dead.”
Your honesty sends him awkward. Percy’s cheeks flush red, and he rubs the back of his neck with his hand. “I’m sorry.” He might be awkward, but he’s honest.
You face forwards, Percy sitting next to you. The bed drips.
“I had the strangest dreams out there.”
“Oh yeah?”
He chuckles quietly. “Yeah. Um—you went missing, and I couldn’t find you at all. It was like you’d been wiped off the earth, or, more like you never even existed. Nobody remembered you. You came home in the end, took a while though. We travelled half the country to find you. More of a nightmare, really…” his words make you feel uneasy.
“Maybe your brain was just reflecting real life. To be thrown on some unknown island alone for weeks like that?” Something peeks out of the pocket in Percy’s shirt. “…had to…mess with your head. What’s that?” You nod to the little sprig.
Percy’s eyes turn to saucers. He coughs, recovering quickly, and raises shaky fingers to pull the tiny plant from the pocket. Its roots are skinny and frail, but the flower they lead to is bright white. The petals are perfectly rounded, five total. They’re dotted with almost see-through circles.
“It’s beautiful,” you reach out to brush your finger on one of its petals. It almost looks like it’s glowing, but with the light from Percy’s nightshade it’s hard to tell. “You found it on the island?”
He swallows hard. “Yeah.” And says no more.
You sit until late into the night and early morning watching the flower glow gently. You see the sky begin to turn orange, signally dawn is coming, and finally retreat to your own cabin for some sleep. For once in what feels like forever, you feel nothing but comfort, slipping under the covers as your cabin turns a warm shade of orange and yellow as the sun comes up, quiet and basking in the knowledge that everyone is, finally, safe.
Tumblr media
It’s late afternoon when someone wakes you up. Apparently it was a unanimous decision to leave you alone until time got on. By the time you’re up, dressed and ready for the day to head over to Sally Jackson’s home in Manhattan, it’s almost three o’clock in the afternoon. You eat a steady supply of toast and jam, down a cup of apple juice, and take a bottle of water in your bag for the ride.
Chiron waits for Percy and yourself by the camp border. He doesn’t look particularly pleased that you’re both leaving, but you don’t care. There isn’t much to be done about your current situation, so you carry on.
You feel rejuvenated today, almost bouncing in place, waiting for Percy to finish packing his bag on the grass. Is it the good sleep? Or the weight off your shoulders now Percy is home and breathing?
“No detours,” Chiron instructs, pointedly looking at you. You hold up your hands in surrender. “No wandering. I’d like this to be a straightforward journey, today. Too many things have been going wrong; this trip has to be straightforward.”
“That’s us told,” You pipe up, tilting your head.
Percy elbows your leg.
Chiron only smiles, tensely. You get the feeling there’s something they’re not telling you, but let it drop, for now.
Percy’s mom is absolutely ecstatic to see her son again, for obvious reasons. Her cheeks drench with tears as she holds him to her, rocking side to side in place at the front door. As much as Percy will try and hide it, you know his teary look is legit, and not the result of some dust in his eyes. Sally lets him go and steps out of the way, letting you into the apartment. She doesn’t miss you, though you’re not anticipating her considering you as well. She grabs you by the arm when you pass her, and just about suffocates you in her embrace. You’re not going to say no—it’s nice to just be held and loved by a mom. The older girls at camp are a godsend for trials and tribulations you might be facing, and they’re sisterly, but not motherly, so it isn’t quite the same. You could get high on the feeling of being loved on.
Sally Jackson smells like Elizabeth Arden’s green tea perfume, and a mix of something sweet, and laundry powder. The apartment smells strongly of baking, and when you round the hallway to the living room adjoining the kitchen, you see plates upon plates of cookies and cakes.
“Damn, Sally,” you breathe. “You’ve been busy.”
“Mom!” Percy complains. “What are you going to do with all of this!”
“You’re going to eat it!” She instructs with a laugh, wiping her eyes and briskly walking past the two of you. She pushes you both to sit on the couch, and you do without complaint. Sally returns with a plate of chocolate chip, and raisin, cookies in one hand and a plate with two strawberry-frosted cupcakes in the other. She sets them down on the table, and then turns around with a quiet, ‘oh, forget it’ and leans around to squeeze you both into a bear hug. Percy’s cheek presses against yours, boiling hot to the touch, embarrassed. You simply melt against Sally and return her hug, going as far as throwing one arm around her and one around her son.
“I told them you’d be alright,” she muffles into her son’s hair.
“Here I am,” he drones, bored-sounding. You know for a fact it’s all pretend; Percy’s a mom’s boy.
“Tell me everything,” she demands, pulling back. “I want to know every little detail.”
You let Percy tell her what’s happened, having your input only when he forgets certain things, like him tripping over a crack in the tunnels, or nearly falling down a mine shaft that opened up out of nowhere. You had caught him only by the strap of his backpack, before it broke off in your hand.
Sally takes a deep breath in when you’re finished with the stories. She slaps a hand on her knee, blinking. “Well, now I know how the Alcatraz incident happened. But at least you’re safe.”
Percy coughs awkwardly. “Yep! That pretty much covers the whole…thing.”
“I wish Paul were here right now. He wanted to talk to you, Percy, about what happened at the school. He wants to get things straight again.”
“What did you tell him?”
You settle back into the couch with a frosted cupcake, accepting that you have no place in this conversation. You busy yourself with the magazine lying discarded where Sally must have sat before you rang the doorbell. It’s open on pages eleven and twelve: THIS YEAR’S HOTTEST ACTORS. That, you can get with.
“What could I say?” Reasons Sally. “He knows there’s something different about you. But he fully believes you’re a good person. He doesn’t know what’s going on, but he’s willing to try to understand. He has to give the school a reason though—he’s the one who got you admitted there. It’s a little bit difficult, because you ran away after the fire broke out.”
Percy exhales heavily. “I’ll tell him properly after we’ve finished this quest. I want him to know.” Percy, willing to open up to somebody after the horror that was living with Gabe.
“You’d do that?” Says Sally.
Percy shrugs. “Well, yeah, but he’ll think we’re crazy.”
“He thinks that already,” she chuckles.
“Then we have nothing to lose!”
“So, what happens now?”
Silence encases the room for a second or two.
“Percy has a plan,” you blurt, and shovel cupcake in your mouth.
“I’m thinking, if we go off of the old myths and legends, we could use a mortal who has the Sight to help us. I know this girl who was at the school induction day, she might be willing to give us a hand.”
Sally nodded slowly. “It might work. You need her to find a path or something?”
Percy hums. “Exactly that.”
“I think it’ll work. Just be careful, all of you. I know you think you’re invincible—”
Percy groans. “Mom!”
“You think you’re invincible!” She repeats louder. “But you’re only nearly sixteen! You’re still babies, alright? Now, go use the phone in the hall. You’ll be fine for a few minutes.”
Percy went out to use the phone, while Sally launched you into another hug, and then demanded you put your feet up for five minutes and watch the television. The Ellen Degeneres show is playing, and you let yourself get comfortable, listening to Sally humming in the kitchen and Percy’s mumbling on the phone. He enters the room and looks your way straight away.
“Half an hour,” he says, “Rachel’s meeting us in Times Square.”
Sally said goodbye at the door with a thick voice and tears in her eyes, and made the two of you promise to drop by on the weekend. You wished you could swear that yes, you would absolutely come around for more cakes and iced coffee, but unfortunately, the world hated you and all you stood for, even though you were barely sixteen and troubled to hell. Percy’s face shone with not just health but pure happiness from being around his mom; by the time you walked into Times Square, that facial expression turned weary.
“Where are we meeting her?”
You didn’t have to wonder for long. Seconds later, Percy pulled you to stop in front of a living statue group, each member showing in shades of gold, green or silver from head to toe. At first you struggled to understand why on earth Percy thought this display would be cool to look at, and then you realised the display was Rachel Elizabeth Dare.
You roll your eyes so hard it hurts. “What. A. Loser.”
“Hey!” Hissed Percy, genuinely upset. “Could you stop it! For five minutes?” He snaps.
You blink, stunned. Percy doesn’t get angry at you, like, ever. Have you really been that irritating that he’s snapped at last? You’re annoyed at life recently, struggling like hell to understand if it’s because of hormones, the quest, or your situation. Or all three factors combined. Most likely, that is it. But how do you explain that to Percy, who is not just your best friend suddenly pissed off at you, but he’s a boy, and he’ll never understand that you don’t want Rachel’s help not just because this is your quest, but the fact that it’s Rachel, and you know from a girl’s point of view, how she feels about Percy. You can just tell. And just maybe you’re jealous.
Still, mulling over this, you get even more annoyed at Percy trying to save Rachel’s feelings. A kid walked up from the taxi stand, tucking away half a sandwich in foil into a bag beside the stand the kids stood on together. When he got into position, Rachel dropped hers with a smile so creepy when it was covered in gold.
“Hey, Percy!” She grinned, completely ignoring you. She climbed down from the stand, and swiped her own bag from behind a sign, pulling the straps over her shoulders to go. Was it your comment? She accidentally-on-purpose pushed you aside, linking her arm with Percy’s. Definitely your comment. “Great timing. Let’s get coffee.”
You followed behind the pair on the path among throngs of tourists and people trying to get to work. Since it was Saturday, the place was absolutely buzzing, and if you actually cared about being hit by a car, you’d have been more mindful of the state of the roads. You stop outside a coffee shop labelled JAVA MOOSE, the interior decorated with a large stuffed moose head on the wall above a couple of round tables and tub chairs, with light wood and orange-yellow light fixtures hanging over the tables.
Rachel takes a seat heavily in one of the tub chairs. You follow suite. Nobody seems to care or spare a second look at the girl coloured gold, or that she’s staining the seats with her paint. A barista behind the counter laughs loudly at something a customer points out. You sit opposite Rachel, Percy falling in next to you.
“I’m guessing you don’t want to talk about my art project,” says Rachel. “So, you’re a half-blood too? Like Percy?”
“Announce it to the world, why don’t you?”
Rachel shrugged. “Okay.” She stood up, then, on top of the chair and everything, and cupped her hands around her mouth. “Hey! Everybody! These two aren’t even human! They’re half Greek god! And they’re sitting waiting for monsters!”
You cringe. “Well, when you put it like that…but sit down, seriously. You can’t just shout things like that.”
“But why not?” Rachel blinks innocently. “It’s New York. Nobody cares.”
“Can we all get along for a few minutes?” Asks Percy, throwing in a placating hand over the table. “Please? Look, Rachel, it’s the same as I told you before on the phone. We need your help navigating the maze. The last few times haven’t gone so great. Which is why we’re here. Asking you for help. You have this thing called Sight, only certain mortals have it and it pretty much enables you to see parts of our world that you wouldn’t without it.”
“You want me to help you get through some maze that I’ve never been down.”
“Yes. You can see through the Mist, like the mortal Ariadne in the old tales. The Labyrinth won’t confuse you as much as it’s been confusing us.”
Rachel took in a deep breath. “And if you’re wrong about this?”
“We’ll be lost. Either way it’s dangerous so it evens out.”
“I could die. That’s what you’re telling me. Dead, dead and deader.”
“I thought you said monsters don’t care about mortals?” She probed. It makes you wonder how much Percy has already told her about your world. “Your sword…”
“Celestial bronze doesn’t harm mortals! And monsters would mostly ignore you. At most they’ll get a hint that you’re a little different but not entirely. You’ll blend in.”
Rachel looked between the two of you, but mostly Percy. “Alright. I’m in.”
“First thing,” Percy winced. “We need your help finding an entrance into the maze. There’s one in camp but it’s off limits to mortals. You wouldn’t even be able to cross the border.”
“What does this entrance look like?”
“Could be anything at all. A boulder. A run-down storefront. Some wall,” you chip in. “It’d have the mark of Daedalus on it. The Greek L. Delta.”
For once, there seemed to be a shared understanding between everyone at the table. Rachel dipped her finger in a puddle of water at the edge of the table and drew the Delta sign out.
“Like this?”
“Like that. You know Greek?”
She hummed as if you’d said something really funny. “Lol. No. Just follow me to the Marriott Hotel. I’ve got to show you something I think you’ll really like.”
“And that is?”
“I think there’s an entrance to the Labyrinth in the basement.”

Cuddle/Sleep Headcanons 💤🌙
Pairing(s): characters x Gn!reader
Character(s): Percy, Jason, Leo, Frank, Hazel, Annabeth, Piper, Calypso, Ethan, Nico, Octavian, Reyna
Tumblr media
Percy Jackson
He’s a horrible sleeper
I mean sure, you can sleep and cuddle like the couple you are
However, that doesn’t stop him from sleeping wildly
Limbs sprawled all over the freaking place and the only reason you know is because of the concerning amount of times you’ve woken up under some of them
To make it worse?
He’s a blanket hogger
He doesn’t rlly hog it in the sense that he steals it all
I mean he does, but he sorta just slides off the bed and takes the rest of the blanket with him
The urge to just 🔫
But yea 😞
Nice to cuddle with but not to sleep with sorry not sorry
6/10
Jason Grace
Kinda stiff ngl
Like damn bitch, you live like this?
Plus he sleeps on his back face up 😭😭😭
Like wtf Jason
Are u ok?
In terms of actually cuddling, he’s pretty good
His arms are firm and his hugs are tight yet comforting
Plus he smells pretty good
Like no joke
I’d kinda see you sleeping on his chest since bro sleeps on his back
It’s nice but the stiffness is not appreciated 🙅
Atleast he’s not a blanket hogger and he’s quite considerate with the blankets and stuff
So
8/10
Leo Valdez
He sleeps two different ways
The first way is pretty compacted
What I mean is, he sleeps he sleeps bundled up by the blanket in a blanket burrito
The other one is where he sleeps sprawled out, limbs all over the place, blanket discarded
Just like Percy
So when he’s in a blanket burrito best believe he’s taking you with him
He usually does this during winter because he naturally runs hot
Anyway, he pulls you in and kinda bundled the blanket around you two for you guys to cuddle and be as close as possible
But when he’s sprawled out with his limbs everywhere he likes to cuddle with you on top of him
That or you’re abused and crushed by him in your sleep
Plus yknow how he runs hot? Well it’s absolute hell
It’s so hot and honestly suffocating when he’s sleeping on you 💀
Throw him on the ground pls
Ima rate him a 7/10 cuz he ain’t bad and if anything I love him so 🤷
Frank Zhang
He’s the best
Sorta…
He’s obviously huge so
He fully embraces you and hugs you so it’s pretty comfortable
And he sleeps on his side or stomach so there’s plenty of room
Even if he’s a bit stiff he’s still pretty nice to cuddle with
He’s pretty considerate on how you like to sleep/cuddle
He likes holding you so he’s not that picky
Honestly nothing to complain about with him
Except for one thing…
You can’t tell me this guy doesn’t fart 😐
I’m sorry but he just gives me those vibes
And it’s so bad
And not even on purpose either
It just happens but it’s the most traumatic thing ever
He feels pretty bad too 😭
Also when y’all are sleeping you just end up on different sides of the bed
He’s just casually on top of the blanket and you can’t even pull it from under him
You’re left shivering in the cold
Hazel Levesque
I love her 🫶
I see her sleeping on her sides and stomach tbh
She’s so sweet too
She loves to cuddle with you and even tho she doesn’t rlly have a firm grip she still likes to hold you
She especially likes to sleep on you
Either on your chest or just cuddled up to you
And she smells pretty sweet
Like clean laundry too like lawd
But ofc there’s gotta be some downsides
There’s isn’t really none with her, but with you
You end up stealing the blankets and hazel wakes up mad and cranky
That’s all and she quickly forgives you
Annabeth Chase
Sleeps on her back or side
She doesn’t really like cuddling all that much
She prefers to have some space and stuff when she sleeps
But if you want, she’s open to cuddling
She loves to both be held and to hold you
Mostly it’s mutual holding
Plus she probably sleeps with the fan on
Idk how to explain it
If you’re the type to always talk during night time then she’d react differently
Like if you gotta sleep asap cuz of the mission and all you do is yap
Then she’s turning her back on you and ignoring
What a meanie
At least she apologizes the next day but still
I don’t rlly see her stealing the blanket or anything but she is pretty stiff
Like besides hugging and stuff she lowkey just lets you hug her when she doesn’t feel like moving
Mood
Also since she smells good ofc ur gon sniff and she’ll be weirded out and ignore u this way too 😞
Piper McLean
She sleeps anyway tbh
She pretty cuddly and likes to snuggle w you
She usually likes to be held, but either way is fine
Especially after a fight or exhausting time with monsters
She’ll hold you in her arms too
She smells pretty nice and if you say so?
Well she finds it endearing
Unlike a certain someone
*cough cough* annabeth
But yea she’s the best
But she won’t hesitate to kick you out if you refuse to share the blanket
She gets enough crap from Leo
Who is just constantly annoying her
Calypso
The best
Like she fr loves to cuddle
With everything she’s been through best believe she’s the best cuddler
Honestly she sleeps whatever way
She’s another who loves to be held and to hold others
Especially if you’re hurt or anything
Then she’s try and tend to you
Even in sleep
Most times she’s a small spoon
She’s loved so many people who never loved her back
So perhaps she’s just a tad bit touch starved
And would obviously give in to any affection
As previously mentioned she loves to hold you too
Mostly just having you lean on her shoulder or lay on her lap but it also extends to cuddling on occasion
She’ll have you lay on her chest and in her arms and play with your hair
Ethan Nakamura
He’s so stiff it’s painful
(Not actually)
He’s definitely loyal, the books show that much
So despite his personal feelings with touch (he’s no doubt another touch starved person) he’d like to cuddle with you nonetheless
Not much in the beginning but he’d definitely warm up to you
And in the process, realize how much he wants it
He’ll let you love him however you want (cuddle him) and let you play with his hair
Which he loves
Eventually he gets enough courage to reciprocate
But he’s still stiff
Not the best when hugging or cuddling you because of how flustered he gets
Once you two go to bed and he falls asleep, he gets pretty subconsciously protective so he’ll hold you tight
Nico Di Angelo
Yes
Just yes
He loves to cuddle never made it obvious before tho
Another who was pretty stiff and touch starved
He gets over it quickly when he sees what you have to offer
I mean usually he just sleeps bundled up under the blankets, engulfed by their warmth
But with you there he just pulls you under the blankets with him so you can cuddle that way
Is mostly just mutual holding
He mostly just liked to intertwine your legs or hold onto you like a koala
I see him as a blanket stealer when you’re not glued together
He’s either super sleepy or not at all
When he’s tired he just drags you to bed, since that’s the only time nightmares don’t plague him
But when hes suffering from his insomnia he likes it when you stay up and talk with him
Idk to him it feels intimate but if you choose to go to bed, he won’t take it personally
If you play with his hair he won’t admit it but he loves it
Octavian
Ew.
Sorry I hate him but seeing that you’re here, you probs love him
So let’s get this over w
He’s rlly long and lanky and boney
Doesn’t stop yall from cuddling tho ig
And like a weirdo he sleeps on his back, arms to his side, head facing upward
Honestly probably obsessed with you
Only way he’d cuddle/ be in a relationship with you
He’s probably never been touched by another person
So he definitely likes to be held
Plus the bastard is selfish
And he doesn’t hold you
😐…
Yea so 1/10
I’m being generous
Reyna Ramirez-Arellano
I love her 😭🫶🫶
Yea she probs love you so ofc she’s gonna cuddle w u
Often times she’s busy with the duties of praetor so she can’t cuddle 😞
But it’s ok cuz when she can it’s the best
Not only is she holding you and making you feel cared after
But she also plays with your hair
Also you have to hold her
I don’t make the rules, just look at her, she needs it
When you do she’s a bit put off
But eventually she lets you coddle her
So more often than not she’s little spoon and comfortable
Just like she deserves
Yes beautiful
9/10
————————-
Note: I just realized Reyna is a hunter now idk why I even wrote hers 😭 maybe pre-hunter Reyna??? Idk man

𝑻𝒐 𝑫𝒆𝒇𝒚 𝑭𝒂𝒕𝒆
ᴏ. ʀᴇɪɴᴄᴀʀɴᴀᴛɪᴏɴ ɪs ᴀ ᴛʜɪɴɢ, ᴀᴘᴘᴀʀᴇɴᴛʟʏ
You find out reincarnation actually exists the hard way and sort of maybe go through the five stages of grief?
Tumblr media
Your death comes to you in the most embarrassing way on your thirteenth birthday.
On your way home from school, you had decided to take the long route and found yourself walking across the edge of a bridge, arms held out to help you keep balance and your mind somewhere far away.
Unfortunately for you, though, your far away thoughts cost you your focus, so you failed to remember that it had rained last night, and the bridge was still wet from the storm's assault in result.
All in all, your realization came too late in the form of you slipping and falling into dark, deep, rushing water that sung with triumph when your form fell into its embrace and sunk into its depths.
Death didn't last long, luckily enough, but that was only because you somehow opened your eyes just after closing them in acceptance of your inevitable end.
Needless to say, when you woke up—expecting either the gates of Heaven, the fiery pits of Hell, or perhaps nothing—to find yourself staring up into the eyes of two women you had never seen before in your life, you were pretty confused.
One of the women, who just so happened to be holding you, for some reason, had [S/t] skin, long, [H/c] hair, and fox-like [E/c] eyes that stared down at you with such pure adoration, you nearly did a double take to see if maybe your eyes weren't working as well as they used to due to, you know ... dying.
The other woman was quick to take your focus from the other one, though, and that was probably because of the fact that she had horns and goat ears??
Maybe you were right about your eye sight, after all. It clearly must've had something wrong with it now, if you were starting to see people with horns and goat ears.
"[Y/n] ..." The whisper of your name makes you return your attention to the woman holding you, and she smiles down at you, emitting a sort of warmth that had you snuggling closer to her before you could even think of stopping yourself. The action seems to please her, because her smile grows and she pulls you closer, placing a kiss atop your head.
You hear the other woman chuckle, the noise fond and just as warm as the presence of the one holding you, and then watch her from the corner of your eye as she draws closer and slips her arm beneath you, wanting to cradle you as well.
"Welcome to our world, little one," you hear her say, and with their combined warmth, you can only keep your eyes open for so long before exhaustion consumes you once again.
(In the back of your mind, the horned woman's words echo; "Welcome to our world"—something meant only to be a greeting to the new being they've brought to life, yet despite this, you can't help but feel as though it also alludes to something deeper.
But for now, sleep comes first, and you promise yourself that you'll only feel semi-disappointed when you wake up and learn this was all only a dream.)
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
You're going to lose your shit.
It was not a dream. This is not a dream.
You end up balling your eyes out for hours. The two women you had thought to be mere figments of your imagination (your new parents, apparently) panic throughout the entire ordeal and do everything they can to get you to stop, but for as bad as you feel for making them worry, you just can't stop because you were dead you were supposed to be dead how is this even possible—
The only peace they get is when you're asleep, but even then, those moments can only last for so long before the nightmares—the memories have your eyes shooting open to fill with tears in seconds, and then the cycle starts all over again.
Your parents (no they're not they can't be yours and you can't be theirs oh god do they even know what's happened to you back home what happened to your body) are, understandably, very concerned. Since coming home, you've done nothing but cry and cry and cry, and nothing they do can get you to stop. They've already tried taking you to the doctor, believing for a horrifying moment that you must have been painfully ill, but the appointment only ended with the man—eyes filled with sympathy for the couple—telling them that you're actually perfectly healthy.
"I'm sorry, but I'm afraid that there isn't anything that I can do to help you," he'd said, your cries just as loud as ever and making the [E/c]-eyed woman holding you—Penelope Ophelia—gather you up from where you were sitting on her lap to rock you gently in her arms in a desperate attempt to soothe you.
"Really?" Penelope's lover, the woman the horns (that the doctor doesn't seem to notice, mind you), sent the doctor a pained, frustrated look. "Nothing at all?" she asked.
He only shook his and apologized again.
You don't know how long it's been, nor do you care. All you know is that you were dead, and then you weren't, and now all you've ever known most likely doesn't matter, because who knows if you'll ever see it again?
But then one day, as if your world couldn't be turned upside down anymore than it already has, you manage to catch Penelope's loud gasp above your crying, and then—
"Willow! I think I know why [Y/n]'s been crying!" she says, suddenly rushing over to you and lifting you up for a closer look at your head. "They have horns coming in!"
You hear someone—Willow, obviously—spit their drink out from the other room, and the shock you feel at Penelope's words turns out to be all it takes for you to finally stop crying.
'Horns'? Did you hear that right?
Clearly taking your stunned silence as a sign for whatever reason, Penelope begins to coo at you and bring you close to caress your head and kiss it, and—Oh. Oh.
You can feel them: the horns, small bumps on your head (for now), everytime Penelope's delicate hands brush over them. The movements are gentle and careful, obviously out of fear of accidentally hurting you and setting your constant crying off once more, and your mind is so caught up trying to piece together an explanation for—for all of this—that you don't even notice Willow coming into the room, a bright grin on her face as she takes in the small nubs growing from your crown and says:
"Would you look at that?" She laughs and takes you from Penelop's grasp to hold you up in the air like that monkey from The Lion King did. "Looks like I win the bet after all! Ay, little satyr?"
Willow laughs again when she sees her wife playfully roll her eyes, and you—for the first time since you've been brought to their home—remain silent while your entire world crumbles around you.
Satyr?
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
The Percy Jackson series was a gift to you from your grandparents on your eleventh birthday, and you've been obsessed with it ever since.
When you found yourself sighing over the boring, mundane life you lived, you would open the books and get lost in the world of Camp Half-Blood: imagining yourself as a camper, wondering who your Godly parent would be, and grinning at the idea of getting to befriend the main cast and join them on their adventures. While you were stuck inside doing homework, Percy and his friends were out fighting monsters and meeting Gods, and a part of you—the part that always longed for something more—would wish you could reach out and join them.
And now here you were, in a world clearly not like your own, and one of your new mother's is apparently a satyr.
(You are, too, but you're not really ready to process that just yet.)
It wasn't possible—it couldn't be possible. It's not like satyrs were only relevant in Percy Jackson, after all; there are plenty of stories out there that included the mythological race! You couldn't have possibly just so happened to get reborn into the world of the book series you've adored for two years! It just—it wouldn't make sense! Clearly, one of your new guardians being a satyr was a mere coincidence. Nothing more, nothing less.
"Chiron wrote to me, recently," sighs Willow as she plops down onto the couch Penelope had decided to read a book to you on. "Looks like the camp's satyr situation is a lot more serious than I thought, if he's sending me letters and asking me to help out again."
You choke on your own spit and have Penelope frantically patting your back before the woman can even respond to what her wife just revealed.
Then, when that whole ordeal's finished, Penelope lays you down in your crib after her and Willow take turns kissing your forehead, and now you're left alone to stare up at the canopy painted to the ceiling, losing yourself to your thoughts.
This ... isn't a dream. Yeah, that's been pretty obvious for a while now, but the assurance made your shoulders feel a little lighter. This isn't a dream and ... it's a lot.
You ... What should you do? You don't know how you got here, and you honestly doubt that there's a way out, so ... Again, what should you do?
Taking a deep breath, you close your eyes and decide, for now, to just go over what you do know:
1. You've been reborn (no duh, but sometimes you just have to repeat that to yourself to properly get it through your head).
2. Your 'parents' are two women by the name of Penelope and Willow Ophelia. Willow is a satyr, and Penelope (as far as you know) is a human.
3. Again, you've been reborn, and into the world of Percy Jackson of all places.
The bigger, more logical part of you kind of wants to start crying again. Out of literally anyone in the world—your world—why was this happening to you? Everyone you've ever known, all you've ever known, are suddenly gone, and all because you decided you wanted to walk along the edge of a stupid, slippery bridge.
It's just ... so frustrating. You were never perfect, you never wanted to be perfect, but you liked to think you were a good person, at least. What could you have done to deserve this? Who could have thought you deserved this?!
Yet, still, for as badly as you want to freak out (to cry, scream, break something) you can't deny that there's a small part of you—the part of you that always knew, even if you didn't want to fully admit it to yourself, that you could never conform to what society expected from you, that wanted nothing more than to just jump into the pages of your beloved books and live out the rest of your days in Camp Half-Blood, fighting monsters and challenging Gods—that feels just a little bit ... giddy about this. Because for as much your old family tried, for as much as they loved you, they just couldn't understand why you were the way you were; couldn't make you feel seen in the way Percy, Annabeth, Nico, and all of the other demigods did.
And, Gods, that was just the biggest part of it, wasn't it?
Even after everything they'd gone through—the ignorance of adults not willing to understand, the apathy of other kids who thought lesser of those not like them, the loneliness and confusion because you didn't know what was wrong with you—they had still found a place to belong. Found people to belong to. And ... and ...
And you wanted that. More than anything in the world, back then.
But this was not your world anymore. This was theirs.
And now that you've thought about it, you realize that there's one more thing you can add to the list of 'Things I Know':
4. You've been reborn into the world of Percy Jackson, and you've already read a step-by-step guide on how to live in it.
(That morning, when Willow comes into your room to bring you down for breakfast, her forest green eyes swell with tears.
Your smile was just as beautiful as her and Penelope knew it'd be.)

it's honestly always very funny to know how someone started to like a ship from a kids show or book years after reading it for the first time. For example, I read Percy Jackson for the first time when I was twelve I think and I shipped all the canon ships and now re reading it it's like "Ok no way Leo likes girls, he AT LEAST likes both" or "Dude, and I really thought Pip was straight?????" This is how she describes Annabeth ABD I WAS THERE, THINKING SHE AND JASON WERE STRAIGHT?"
so yes my pjo re reading journey can be pretty much summarized with "Jason did want a short chaos causing mean but adorable and hot brunette, he just got the wrong one" and yes "Piper did want a blonde taller leader with a printed serious face, she just got the wrong one"

Calypso x Leo SUCKS, here is why
Look, I get why that sounds harsh, and it is, but hear me out.
First and most importantly, Calypso is a pedophile. We see her fall in love with 14 year old Percy, then 15/16 year old Leo. Already weird, right? And look, if we got some explanation as to why it would ever be okay for a titaness who is thousands of years old to fall in love with CHILDREN, maybe I could see past it.
BUT in the odyssey myth, Odysseus was MUCH older than a teenager. He was already noted to be an old wise king (who was old enough to feign madness from old age) at the START of the Trojan war. Now that war lasted 10 years and add to that the multiple years he spent traveling to Ithaca, and you got an old-ass man. So either Calypso was already a mature adult, or a child thirsting after some old dude. Sure, it happens, but weird. Let's not forget that Odysseus was married and very much still in love with his WIFE Penelope, but Calypso basically kept him hostage on her island and would not let him leave at all.
Now let's get to Percy, he got blamed for not making sure that the gods kept their promise??? Good sir that is a 16 year old who just got out of a WAR and had his memory stolen, of course he didn't check with the gods. ITS NOT HIS RESPONSIBILITY! He shouldn't be held accountable. Also let me remind you that Calypso wanted him when he was 14. Not a good look.
And finally, we get to Leo. Poor poor Leo. A boy who was oh-so starved for love that he took anything he could get, and that's my explanation as to why Calypso x Leo ever happened. Honestly, I adored Leo. I had a crush on him (still kinda do shhh), I won't lie. However, I also adored Annabeth but since her and Percy are amazing together, I could get behind Percabeth. But Caleo? Hell no. Sure, they have a fun dynamic, but it's more of a sibling dynamic in my opinion. I would've rather had Leo x Khione or something. Maybe Leo x Echo cause that would've been adorable. But Caleo??? No. He should've never gone back for her. Leave her to rot.
Secondly, Calypso is simply a jerk. And I'm the type of person who adores asshole characters when done right. Octavian is great because he's an irredeemable asshole AND he gets karma. But Calypso? She's a bitch and gets such a kindhearted boyfriend in return. Like I said, she tried to pressure a (married) man into sleeping with her and is simply a dick to Leo (HER BOYFRIEND) and I could understand if they were siblings, cause siblings are dicks to eachother with love underneath, but she just sucks. She immediately hated him, which she has reason to do after what happened to her, but even after that she was just horrible to Leo. I seriously don't see why he loves, likes, or even tolerates her.
In conclusion, I hate what Rick did to Leo. I adore his stories like no other (which is why I'm so passionate about this), but he really fumbled the bag here. Calypso is just not a good fit for Leo.
Personally I really do prefer Leo x Jason, Leo x Nico or even Leo x Echo. And yes it does sound weird for me to say that considering that I call Calypso a pedo, but I could see Echo not being able to age normally because of being stuck with Narcissus. Echo x Leo is in my opinion much better than Calypso x Leo.
Um sorry- that was really mean but I needed to say that.
On a lighter note I saw this really long worm which was cool! :D

pjo/hoo @/amusement park headcanons
idk i thought of this forever ago and it's been sitting in my notes forever, so here
piper throws up on a rollercoaster
percy cannot, for the LIFE of him, win annabeth a prize.
"let me show you how it's done, seaweed brain." she calculates how to throw and wins him a tiny stuffed trident.
rachel has to quickly pull grover away from his feast in the trash cans before someone sees
leo & calypso fix a broken-down ride
jason tries to convince thalia to do the bungee jump dive w him--she offers up piper instead but ends up doing it anyway
(she may or may not nearly strike percy w a lighting bolt)
hazel helps a little girl find her lost earrings and frank is basically in love
everyone realizes they "lost" percy & annabeth at the water park ;)
jason was sent to find them and boy--HE DEFINITELY FOUND THEM
frank accidently gives archery lessons
jokes about grover becoming the amusement park janitor
hazel kinda wishes nico were there but she knows he wouldn't have had fun
rachel & calypso befriend each other
piper gets a piggyback ride from leo & vice versa, as well
frank & grover are "guests" in a hypnosis performance
thalia finds this too amusing and takes pictures for the hunters to enjoy
percy & annabeth stroll around themselves for a while just being cute <33
jason mentions smth about nico being gay to piper (an aside, just a short snippet):
annabeth was trying to sneak up on piper w her yankees cap but now she stumbles back to percy by the restrooms and almost cries laughing.
"all this time we thought he had a crush on me, but it was you!"
percy is so mortified
calypso slaps percy when she first sees him (they were all kinda nervous about them meeting again, esp annabeth even tho she knew not to worry; if your bf can turn down a roman praetor for you w/o even fully remembering you, then you should be fine) but then she thanks him for leaving. he's not her happy ending, and she isn't his.
honestly, he was most shocked to see her wearing jeans
leo somehow catches a water ride on fire??
jason & percy volunteer to be in a sword fighting demonstration--somehow none of the mortal audience notices they discarded the prop swords they were given
piper & annabeth are slightly worried they're going to kill each other
calypso guarantees them this a "rather healthy" confrontation
"of course, verbal communication is the best way, but guys think differently."
grover has a picture of juniper in his wallet. rachel finds this incredibly sweet
leo jokingly volunteers to give grover's goatee a trim
no one appreciates the pun.
grover declines.
hazel almost uses golden drachmas as payment for her lunch and frank just can't help but laugh at her
jason & piper fly around the park
the aerial tramway is for chumps
piper fangirls very much upon seeing percy & annabeth's seat--midair snuggling and forehead kisses
jason calls down to thalia to be calm
she's gripping the ride so tightly
she wasn't even supposed to be IN the cart bc it's only fit for two people but rachel & grover pulled her into it
leo's super fuckn fascinated when learning to braid calypso's hair
he tries to copy piper's braids, but she has to inform him it's complicated due to her uneven hairstyle
thalia, rachel, grover, percy, & annabeth all eat lunch together and it's so comfortable.
thalia had never fully met rachel but now she's just crying from how rachel blatantly broke up w percy w/o even dating him

Why I don’t ship Leo Valdez with anyone.
Edit: I use speach to text, and I didn’t prof read because I had to work and I didn’t have time. So if you are reading this edit, it means there are still some grammatical mistakes. I will correct it and delete this red paragraph after work. If it’s been over 24 hours. Someone remind me in the comments cause my dumbass forgot.
In all honesty it’s because since he is my favorite character and I heavily identify with him, it’s because I want him to be happy. And I don’t think there’s an option of a healthy relationship shown in the books.
OK, first let’s go one by one on the popular ships and I’ll discuss why I don’t like any of them.
Hazel
Hazel already has an expectation for Leo, yes, he does look very similar to his grandfather, and they do have similar sense of humor, but let’s be honest guys as I debunked in a very recent post. They are not the reincarnated soul, and even if they are people change souls, change and reincarnation that’s the purpose of them they grow and they become different.
If Hazel already has an explanation that means that something Leo already has something to live up to. And that’s not fair.
You shouldn’t start relationships with high expectations. You should have what you are looking for yes like if you were looking for someone who makes you laugh and looks a certain way and makes you feel safe and those are perfectly acceptable expectations. I mean the expectation for someone to act the exact same way as someone has been dead for 14 years, and like this person you have in your mind, you have to be able to understand that no one’s going to live up to your dream and you have to be able to like except that but Hazel has a very hard time looking at Leo as anything other than and that’s really not fair for him, it’s not healthy. Hazel does not Leo she does not even like Leo romantically she purely sees him as Sammy and that’s not a healthy situation for him.
Jason
Do you know those people that look like they might make a good couple but are just better off his friends? It’s not that I don’t think that there’s a chance that Jason or Leo are not attracted to men I don’t know if they are and if they are that’s great for them honestly.
I just feel like the vibe I get from Jason and Leo is that they work so well as friends and they are so functional as friends. I have such a healthy friendship and a healthy relationship platonically that I feel like romance and sexuality would ruin that and it would complicate things, sometimes just click platonically and you should cherish and lust and romanticizing in my opinion.
I do think they have an opportunity to be a good couple, but let’s say everything was exactly the same Percy Jackson, except Piper having the fake romantic memories. It was Leo.
And then Piper and Jason eventually becoming an actual couple it was Leo
That means Leah would have to watch his boyfriend die getting impaled.
And Leo already has so much trauma with people he loves so deeply dying before him that he would spiral and he would probably make another attempt if you know what I mean
Nico
Honestly, I think that Leo and Nico could be really good together. They vibe really well as friends. They do actually canonically have a very strong friendship despite not having a lot of screen time together they have similar body types. They both come from the family of immigrants. They both deal with things through humor, although in a very different way more distraction that doesn’t have to do with the trauma and, Nico sarcastically making fun of his trauma
I honestly can see them working out very well except for the fact that like a child Apollo, I have to support will and seeing that Will and Nico are the best couple for each other
But I don’t think they’d be a good couple because I personally strongly believe that both characters have eating disorders. Nico probably has Anorexia and Leo probably has either anorexia nervosa or bulimia.
And it’s hard to know whether or not this would be good for them romantically because they there is the option that they support each other and they understand each other so they know how to help each other and how to relate to each other, but there’s also the probability that because they feel this way, they will enable each other.
Calypso
The only cannon chip in the one I hate the absolute most
Canonically Leo is a minor he cannot consent to having a physical relationship or romantic relationship with Calypso
In the Percy Jackson universe, I personally believe that because the age of consent went higher that some gods may be not Zeus, but most god started waiting for humans should at least turn 18 before having affairs
Calypso was isolated from earth and Olympus so she doesn’t really know about the whole age of consent thing. She doesn’t even know about consent in Greek mythology. She is an actual rapist.
And putting someone with severe body issues and severe abandonment issues in the arms of the canonically toxic woman it seems so scary to me
Now this rape theory is very speculative of me, although it’s pretty obvious if you know any of calypso myths and you know recognize the fact that Leo is only 15 when they meet it’s very disturbing
Although the reason why I have like actual validation and hating their relationship is that she constantly body shame him, and body checks him and put him down for his physical appearance in anyway she says he’s unattractive. She’ll never find him attractive. She doesn’t refer to him. she doesn’t acknowledge him as her boyfriend that well she yells at him constantly. It’s just like a constant verbal aggregation and abuse to someone who’s already very insecure about their body and very mentally unhealthy and the fact that this is his first relationship is very alarming because he is learning that all of this abuse is just part of being in the couple and that’s not the truth it’s part of reality. It’s really sad to me.
So that’s why I don’t ship with anyone because I don’t feel like anyone would be either available or cause a healthy relationship.
I do want Leo to find love, although I really like the idea that he breaks up with calypso while living in Indiana with his new foster family and then he’s like has a mortal girlfriend that he meets at high school.
Personally, I feel like Leo dating would be the best thing for him because it gives a very strong sense of normalcy that he never had in his life and it’s a strong escape from the tragic immortal world
Something normal and loving and healthy and safe with just a human would be the best relationship for Leo in my opinion. I think that Leo needs to find someone he can settle down with like early in life and have a few kids while he still pretty young because I think that he’s the type of person to therapies his poor childhood by raising kids and a happy childhood and a happy home. Honestly, it makes me happy.

Jason Grace, consistently telling Leo he is awesome.
Name one other character that does that. I dare you.
