(originally sent to my @turnaboutfix inbox)
I actually looked into this myself a while ago and I was amused by what I found out!
"Gu....mumuu....tsu!.... Shinmai bengoshi gaaaa‥‥"
"Guh.... Nguuhh--!.... That novice lawyeeeer..."
(English Localization: "Urrrnngh…! No… I can't be outwitted by this novice bimbo…!")
So it's nothing extremely thrilling in Japanese, if I'm honest, but what I'm delighted by is the other meaning behind the word Edgeworth uses to describe Mia, "新米", "Shinmai".
If you buy some Japanese new crop rice, you will see that word on the bag.

And if you google 新米, you pretty much only get results for rice.
I don't know, it just amuses me.

I know localization is hard but man...Treehouse is a whole other breed. I wonder what else they did with Engage.
I don't know the full extent but here are the one I spotted.
Changing Etie's personality from speaking like Maribelle to being like Sully.
Changing Etie and Goldmary's support. In the B support, Etie reproaches Goldmary's propension of seeking the attention of male soldiers and tries to piss her off by saying her body type is what makes a woman popular which lead Goldmary to straight up tell her "Could you please die ?" (this girl is so wild !). The A support in the original is Goldmary touching Etie's abs rather then her hands.
Removing Fogado explaining in his bond with Leif he doesn't know how to swim.
Changing Goldmary saying she "ate too much and fear she gained weight" in her support with Framme.
Changing Goldmary bragging about her body about her bragging about her elegance and to the people who says that Lucina envying her for that was OOC... may I remind you that the english localization for Awakening also removed anything remotely related to a woman speaking about this ?
Chapter 2 of Engage, they didn't translated Lumera syaing that the power of the rings can be used for both good and evil (from what I recall)
In chapter 7, Alcryst explain that he was lead to shoot Alear because and I quote
待てど暮らせど、来るのは殆どが化け物。
たまに人間が来ても賊ばかりで。
自衛のため討伐をし続けていたら、あなた方にも威嚇を行ってしまいました。
We waited for you for so long but most of the time, only monsters came. Sometimes we crossed path with humans, but all turned out to be thieves. We had to defend ourselves, so we kept on defeating them but we ended up threatning you as well.
Which Treehouse translated as "We assumed you were more of the same"
In the same chapter they translated Lapis saying "if you are weak, you'll be robbed off" by "here the weak serve the strong"
In chapter 8, the replaced Alear straight up stating that they cannot turn into a dragon and pondering on whether it's because of their amnesia by "I wonder if I can turn into a dragon like mother"
In chapter 9, they changed Veyle thanking Alear for having put a bandage on her feet saying that they had warms hands by "you were so kind back then"
In chapter 11, they cut one of Ivy's line towards Alcryst saying "Are you the reason why the Divine one's judgement got clouded back then ? What a stupid choice you made !"
Chapter 17, they added the word "boring" in Marni's line and changed Mauvier's boss quote from "For Lady Veyle... I will..." to "I will stop at nothing to save lady Veyle !"
Chapter 22, translated Alear saying "I won't become a virtuous dragon after all..." to "But I wanted to be a good dragon"
In chapter 23, they translated Veyle's "ima made arigoto" which means either "Thank you for until now" or "Thank you so much" as "Thank you for everything". They also changed Mauvier's dialogue with Zephia being "I felt a bond with the Hounds that was rather out of character for me to feel" to "I felt a true bond with the Hounds" and for Zephia her lines "I always wanted someone who would love me and me only" to "I always wanted the love of a son or a daughter"
Chapter 24, Sombron is being much more explicit then in the English version when he says to Zephia that only blood link matter and that it is why is children loves him just because they are related. Also, in the jpn version Alear says "Thanks to Zephia's help, we can still move foward. We musn't let this opportunity go to waste ! We will defintely defeat Sombron" but Treehouse translated it as "She [Zephia] sacrificed herself to help us" or something like that.
Chapter 26, when Alear says in the jpn version "the portal isn't closed yet" they translated it as "the portal's open"... English mistake, they forgot to add the "the portal is STILL open".
In the Fell Xenologue, they translated Alear saying that they might regain something they "abandonned long ago" by "lost long ago ". They also translated Nel saying that she and Nil have been waiting for a long time by "After all these years". They also removed Nel mentioning that before her ancestors were born, Elyos was a dragonless land.
They censored all the mention of human sacrifice and blood mutilation performed by Griss to feed Sombron.
What else ? Ah yes, they changed the reason why Nel, Rafal and Alear aren't canonically siblings. They basically transfered Rafal's line unto Nel and erased the one line in Alear and Rafal's support infering that Alear isn't considered to be of his "father"s and therefore his and Nel's bloodline. To put it short, in the jpn version they aren't siblings because of Nel and Rafal being from a world where Alear is not their sibling since in their world Alear isn't Sombron's but Lumera's child. In the english version, Treehouse decided that they should not be siblings because their Sombron are different Sombrons.
We also have whatever the heck they did with Seadall's support where instead of the lad straight up explaining that he is on a diet where he avoid eating the food that he likes to not gain weight they basically went through the mental gymnastic of the century to make sure the words"I am on a diet" doesn't appear on screen.
In the jpn version, they removed one or two line infering that Anna has a crush on Alear and Alear saying it's too soon to be lovers so they can still be partners. They made a weird translation of Alear and Veyle's paired ending where instead of "a dragon child who grew up there [in Veyle's orphanage] would success the two as the ruler of Elyos" becomes an "orphan with dragon blood would later unite the continent"... what ?
They removed Timerra and other characters talking about clothes... CLOTHES
They also cut some of the lines in the diary and while some were done for space reason some are euh ?
Like they didn't translated Veyle's entry in the diary saying that "she is Alear only sister" ok, fair enough. But they cut some lines about Ivy's beauty which is more of a problem when Elusia is a country where beauty is very valued.
We also have Louis's watching female habits being changed into observing people in general probably because they were too worried about him being a male Nina to ask themselves "Hum I wonder why the one male character who never really felt a close feminine presence enjoys the presence of women"
They also tone down the already very innocent flirting of Fogado
And that's about all that I noticed. I don't know if there is some more

Amity Park hates the Justice League but loves Red Hood and sometimes other heroes
A/n: I got this random idea so here it is. Oh, and this is good reveal AU ok?
-------
Due to the Justice League mocking them and ignoring their villain problems that were also publicly interdimensional problems, everyone hates the JL. It got worst with the GIW coming in, who blatantly went against the meta-laws (which included aliens, demons and so much more that weren't human from the beginning). They started to think the Justice League supported them.
In the Infinite Realms, however, there's a revenant that many adored and others respected. He did not hold back against criminals. Criminals that would rape, kill, traffic, sell drugs, and more to people. He especially didn't like when they brought kids into this. He'd avenge people the way they should've been: by promising that their abuser/killer/whatever wouldn't be able to do it again. And in the place they lived in, the only way for that to be possible was by major injury, heavy social outcasting, and/or death. Most prefer the 3rd.
And after how long the Amitians dealt with the attacks which eventually came to a slow once or twice a week type thing, they started opening their minds to the idea of coexistence. Well, further than they had. So when people started to cross over and start making their small haunts in their side of the veil, the Amitian's began to become aware of the popular hero Red Hood. He was part of the undead community, which was trustworthy in everyone's books.
So Amity Park started making merch. Most of it was for Team Phantom, but there was plenty for Red Hood as well. There were other heroes on the side, like for Superboy 1 (who they renamed to Supernova due to their hatred for Superman for 2 reasons, the obvious and that he rejected a mirror-born), and Raven (the half demon).
And with this coexistence, Team Phantom had noticed the positive feedback about killing in the name of vengeance. So they went on the offensive, and after a good year of that, the GIW lost funding for producing no results and just taking up resources. The acts were still there, but nobody enacted them in Amity, and nobody actually knew or believed them outside of the haunted city.
Then the Justice League find out about the hero group there due to tracking merchandise after they started to sell outside of the city. Superman was the guy everyone liked, so he was sent over. He immediately got thrown out and was now questioning who the heck Supernova was and when he rejected him.
Flash? Outcast. Everyone ignored and walked away from him. they had the police, who never did anything or even had to anymore, kick him out.
Green Lanter? Oh the poor guy. He had his ring taken away and thrown out of the city somehow. It took hours to find it.
Wonder Woman, they had to be ok with her. Not at first, but once Phantom had a talk with her and people learned that they were cousins through Clockwork (Kronos) and Pandora, they were ok. ish. Tolerated was the best word and she got the info back to the league.
The batfamily took a trip there, dragging Red Hood along somehow. And right when Red Hood was noticed, a crowd began to form as everyone practically worshipped him. There were many victims he had avenged and an Ancient (Lady Gotham) came and gave him the gifts she couldn't without scaring the guy.
At one point, the poor guy even cried.
#dc x dp#danny phantom#justice league#red hood#amitians hate the justice league#Amitians do like some non-local heroes#I didn't mention this but I bet Amitians would also know a lot of not very popular heroes/vigilantes/etc. due to the ghosts#so they're probably the most supportive town in all honesty#Red Hood deserves some appreciation though so here it is#I bet he's a celebrity in the realms#and as for Kon#I bet that the public just start calling him Supernova and he eventually adopts the name because everyone's already calling him that#He'd also be pretty happy about it once he finds out that he has fans that support him being a clone (mirror-born)#He is no longer a clone but a mirror-born now#Tim changed his files#Trigon was arrested for abuse by Walker after Raven was made known to him#Raven's mother paid her daughter a visit with Phantom's help#I just want happy moments right now#I probably should've put these tags in the actual post#but I liked how the ending sounded

Think community actions can’t make waves? Local efforts are powerful forces to protect our ocean and fight climate change! 🌎

💡One example: Central Coast Community Energy. Fueled by public demand, local governments on California’s Central Coast launched this public utility in 2017 to bring clean, renewable energy to our region, helping reduce emissions and combat climate change.

🤝 And yes—we proudly teamed up with our community to support its creation. In 2018, we switched to 100 percent wind and solar power, supplied by Central Coast Community Energy.

🌎 Real climate action can happen when communities come together—with shared purpose and local power.

Want to bring this energy to your community?

why is fransizka called sir by gumshoe? does the Japanese version call her something similar? I've been itching to know for a while now!
Another excellent question! A short answer to the first question is "the same reason he says 'Pal' all the time!"
"Shounin. Namae to shokugyou wa?"
"Witness. Name and occupation?"
(English Localization: "Witness, your name and occupation?")
"Ha--! Namae wa Itonokogiri Keisuke. Shokatsusho no keiji-ssu."
"Yes[, sir]!* My name is Itonokogiri Keisuke. [I'm a] local precinct detective."
(EL: "Yes, sir! My name is Dick Gumshoe. I'm a detective at the local precinct.")
Gumshoe speaks with slang Japanese. As an example, he often says "ッス", "ssu", which is a slurred "です", "desu", the polite way to say "be, is". It's like if you're trying to be polite but you just aren't.
English doesn't really have polite language in the way Japanese does, so the localization team decided to have Gumshoe say "Pal" to thread the needle of showing that he's a little rough around the edges, but still tries to be polite. It's a good choice!
However, calling Franziska (or Edgeworth, for that matter) "Pal" in this situation doesn't exactly work to show this semi-polite speech. Polite speech is expected in the Japanese workplace when you speak with superiors, so the localizers opted with "Sir" instead when he's speaking to Edgeworth--or Franziska.
*Here comes the asterisk! Gumshoe says "はッ", "Ha--", a shortened way to say "はい", "hai", which is a polite "yes". It's often translated as "Yes, sir" if it has the nuance of an English "Yes, sir".
"Shounin. Namae to shokugyou wa?"
"Witness. Name and occupation?" (yep, exactly the same as Franziska above)
(EL: "Witness, please state your name and profession to the court.")
"Ha--!"
"Yes[, sir]!"
(EL: "Sir!")
So, in Japanese Gumshoe doesn't really call Franziska anything. He's merely speaking in a way that shows he's speaking to his boss.
Now, why does Gumshoe call Franziska "Sir" in the English localization? I originally was going to say, "I don't know," but after some googling, it seems like it's a Hollywood trope to address high ranking women in the police or military as "sir" (although, a few folks on various forums who were in those fields insist it's not true to reality). Gumshoe's way of speaking in Japanese is from hierarchical communities, such as the military (the first person pronoun, "自分", "jibun", which Gumshoe uses, is the first-person pronoun used by folks in those communities), so it could also be a nod to that. I'm not sure if that's what the localization team was going for, so I don't want to speak for them!

I heard that japanese Etie has a different personality from localized Etie is that true ?
Yeah...
Other then the voices being very, very different, they don't speak the same way.
Like japanese Etie has a very soft voice while English Etie has a deeper one.
English Etie speaks in a more casual and rough way then jpn Etie because jpn Etie speaks in a very refined and polite way, at the risk of comming across as snobbish; so Etie went from a snobbish ojousama to a sort of tomboyish girl that acts tough and is very hard boiled I would say.
The conversation she has with people have mostly the same meaning (safe for Goldmary) but she acts very, very different.
Just to give an example when they fight for the potato in the english version she says
"I don't think you want to push this with me, lady. Hand over the baked potato"
In the jpn version she says that more in a way like :
"I hope we can avoid a quarrel, so I'll ask this as politely as possible. I demand that you return this potato to me this instant"
A more literal translation being " I want to avoid any quarrels, so I'll just say it briefly. Return the potato to me" (I tried to restore her politeness and the speech gimicks ;w;)
In appearance the localization didn't changed much when it comes to the meaning but in the jpn text, there is a lot of politeness markers such as "masu" with the addition of "wa" to make Etie sounds a bit haughty like Maribelle so in comparison Etie looks much more casual and hostile to the points the delivering is night and day. Heck, english Etie even use expression such as "Gimme" when jpn Etie says stuff very haughty and/or arrogant but refined... I wouldn't look at her dialogue and go "yeah, this character can say Gimme" because... no ? It's like picturing Maribelle saying "Gimme" !
Another example is her B support with Goldmary
Localized version : "Hey, Elusian weirdo ! We gotta talk !"
Jpn version "Well, well if it isn't Goldmary, one of the strangest people in all Elusia. May I speak to you ?"
Again, while delivering this, Etie used a lot of politeness marker that are indicating she is looking down on Goldmary, like a noble in front of beggar (to put it roughly) rather then... euh
In short Etie in jpn has a personality closer to Maribelle while English Etie is closer to.. idk Sully ?
As to why this change happened ... I have no idea.
#fire emblem#fe engage#fire emblem engage#etie fire emblem#fe etie#localization changes#fe translations#note but I didn't make a literal translation for those#because most of those don't take into account Etie being snobb#I mean she literaly uses watakushi#wataskushi#in my head wataskushi and fancy jpn = automatically refined or snobbish

Sign i saw recently had a bunch of paint worn away with lichen in its place, however i unfortunately did not have my phone on me 😔😔
in an alternate universe where science funding is stable and abundant regardless of monetary gain we have already gotten to the complex root of which lichens enjoy signs but only the letters or only the sign and what about the letters or sign they prefer and this haunts me
#i can see it in my minds eye. signs in a row in the same roadside or field or something preferably near a large water source#signs are the same but with slightly different paint or colors#ideally two copies of each sign one facing the sunrise one not#leave them there for years#come back periodically and measure lichen enjoyment or preference#eventually take the signs down and measure the biomass on them and where and stuff#it could be so good. would take decades but also minimal effort to maintain since the lichens crave deterioration#maybe the signs say what the experiment is#(near a large water source or coastline since those lichens tend to be more fruiticose/obvious and have a higher biodiversity)#alternative experiment ive considered before. just going to the local DMV or whatever department of a place takes old signs down#and saying Give them to us. The old signs we want them#and looking for ones with lichens and where the replaced sign is#but a controlled study would be so cool#my hypotheses include:#-some lichens enjoy the letters because they enjoy darker colors that heat up marginally and that makes a difference in a microhabitat#-some lichens prefer different paints because the way they erode provides sticking points or sticky surfaces that accumulate symbionts#-some paints erode and exude some kind of nutrient and lichens love a good eroded nutrient#-some paints erode and exude some kind of marginal toxin that kills the symbionts before they can take hold#-some paints change ph values as they age (some species love a good ph on a surface)#control would be no paint or lettering. which might also eventually get some lichens tbh#a study in Chemi Calls if nothing else#lichens#asks

i’ve seen multiple people say something along the lines of “we’re waking up in the same world we lived in yesterday” which is bleak but also true; there was going to be work to do no matter what. this is the much worse and harder version of that work but even if harris won it would not have fixed the fundamental things that need fixing. i mean, fuck, it would’ve been the better outcome, but the work would still be there. many of the things people fear under trump happened and are happening under biden. we’ll just have more battles to fight.
i think about the progressive mobilization and radicalization that happened 2016-2020; it shouldn’t have to happen like this but we deserve better than a two-party system, and one half of that system was never going to save us. we will always have to do what we can for ourselves and each other 💛
#this is how i felt most of the year leading up to this#its still a fucking blow but i can’t spiral and i can’t act like something fundamentally changed about the world#and sorry if this isn’t very eloquent or useful. i did not really sleep tbh#i hope everyone is taking care of themselves as much as possible#make something today. donate or reach out to a local org. something you care about. be there for your friends and family#ilu#etc

Part Two / Part Three
Ao3
It's 8:45 am.
The Red Barn, which is neither red nor a barn, has been open since 7, catering to the early morning crowd with rounds of coffee and pancakes.
It was no Benny's, but given the size of Hawkins and the lack of alternatives?
No one was complaining.
They were all too happy someone had opened up another watering hole for the working class man (or lass, as Foreman Shelly will dutifully remind you) which meant the place was packed with both day and night shift regulars, passing each other in staggered waves.
It also meant Wayne was sharing the packed breakfast counter with a warehouse worker by the name of John Cheese on one side and Police Chief Jim Hopper on the other.
He doesn't mind it.
Wayne's a man on a budget thinner than his shoelace, but he's also a man who understands that small indulgences need to be made in life or you didn't truly live it.
This is how he convinces himself to get a coffee at the Barn after work everyday, reading the morning newspaper and chatting with the other regulars before he heads home.
Bonus, it gets him out of the rapid-fire franticness that is his nephew in the mornings.
(All the love in the world wouldn't change the fact that all that Eddie came with a lot of noise.
The kind of noise that was a tried and true recipe for a headache right after a long shift.)
As a trade off, Wayne went to bed early so he could wake up in time for dinner with Eddie.
It was a nice little system that worked for them.
A routine Wayne was reminiscing fondly on, when the pager on Chief Hopper started to chirp. With a sad moan, the man fished out a few crumbled bills and threw them on the counter, abandoning his coffee to trudge out to his truck.
This was not unusual.
Particularly recently, given they were but a scant few weeks past that whole mall ordeal. A fact all too easy to remember when one caught sight of the Chief’s still healing face.
What was unusual, was when he came storming through the doors a minute later, face now a furious shade of red with his hat clenched in his hand.
The energy in the room shifted, taking on something a little watchful as Hopper swept his gaze from side to side, like a dog on the hunt.
Judging by the way he stilled when he caught sight of Wayne, the latter assumed he found what he was looking for and could only pray it was the person behind him.
(He liked John, but Wayne had enough trouble this year and he wasn't looking for any more.)
"Munson." Hopper called, striding over and dashing all his hopes. There was a choked fury emitting off him, and given the way John audibly scooted his chair away, Wayne knew everyone had clocked it.
"Chief." Wayne greeted, inclining his head towards him.
Idly he wondered what the hell his nephew had done this time.
'So help me if he stole all the town's lawn flamingos and put them in that damn teachers yard again….'
Wayne didn't even get to finish his threat, the Chief was already next to him.
"Mind if I have a word outside?"
Dammit Eddie.
"Ah hell, what's he done now?" Wayne asked with a sigh, eyeing the coffee he had left morosely.
There was still almost half of it left and the pot had tasted fresh for once.
"What?" Hopper said, and then Wayne got to watch as the man ran through an entire chain of thoughts, each one punctuated by things like; "Oh," and "No. "
"This is something else." He finished, flushed and fidgeting, anger making him antsy.
Wayne stared up at him.
"Something else?" He repeated, not sure he heard.
"Yes, something else." Hopper snapped impatiently, before leaning forward, voice dropping low. "This doesn't involve your nephew, but we both know you owe me for how many times I've let that kid off, Wayne. That's a damn big favor I've been doing you and I'm calling it in."
If it were any other cop, it'd sound like a threat.
It was Hopper though. The same Hopper who Wayne had gone to school with.
They'd never been friends exactly, but they had been friendly and remained so. Even now, after Wayne had taken Eddie in, who’d gone on to be an undeniable pain in the local PD’s ass.
Hopper really did let the kid off easy.
Wayne really did owe him.
So he put down his coffee with a sigh, passed his newspaper over to John and stood up, motioning for Hopper to lead the way. Got into the Chief’s truck when he waved him in, and didn’t make a big fuss when Hopper tore out of the parking lot like hell was about to open up under them.
"Not a lot of the kids involved in the mall fire could be identified, but a few of them were." Hopper started, which felt nonsensical given the utter lack of context.
Wayne hummed to show he’d heard.
“Some of them got banged up more than others, and a lot of people wouldn’t be surprised if they didn’t make it.”
A pause, Hopper white knuckling the steering wheel as he swung the truck hard around a turn.
“For certain people, those kids dying is the preferred outcome.”
A mix of fear and warning swopped low in Wayne’s gut.
"Jim." Wayne said, dropping the use of a last name because if any situation called for it, it was this one. "What exactly are you saying here?"
The Chief chewed on his split lip.
"I know you're smart, Munson. I know you, and plenty of others are aware that something's happening, been happening in this town."
Which was a hell of an understatement if you asked Wayne. Plenty of the upper classes might be able to bury their heads when it came to the military parading about and the flow of “accidents” they brought in their wake, but then, they didn't see all the other signs of trouble.
The absolute oddity that was Starcourt’s construction.
How it had been built using primarily outside crews and anyone who'd taken a singular look at the site could tell you they were building it weird.
Weird as in it looked like it would have a multi-level basement, and not what a mall should have.
Then there were the constant electrical problems. The backups upon backups that failed. The late night delivery vans headed out to the Hawkins Lab.
The things in the woods that kept spooking all the deer and the weird markings they left behind that unnerved even the hardest of hunters.
This didn’t even touch the Russian military that more than one reputable person swore was hanging around.
The very same Wayne himself had seen, on more than one occasion.
(And you couldn’t deny it; those boys were military. Past or present, it didn’t matter. They moved like a threat, and Wayne treated them like one, staying well clear.)
"Yeah." Wayne admitted. "I also know better than to stick my nose in it."
"That makes you a smarter man than me.' Hop complained under his breath, but the anger was self directed.
"The point is, there are some government types crawling around, doing shit they shouldn't be doing, and more than a few of them are in the business of making people disappear.”
This was absolutely not where Wayne had thought this was going.
Hopper took a breath. Than another.
A third.
It was starting to make Wayne nervous, in a way he hadn’t felt since a social worker had brought Eddie to him for the last time and final time. It was the feeling that things were about to shift in a way that would change the course of his life.
"Steve Harrington is sitting in my office right now, beat to absolute shit.” Hopper admitted.
Wayne gave him the floor to talk, letting him go at his own pace without interruptions.
“He's there because some of those government types finally figured out his parents are never fucking home.”
Wayne sucked in a breath.
"We both know his parents, Wayne. Harassing them to come back and take care of their kid won't work, and frankly, I’m beginning to think all the phone lines are tapped anyway.” He winced here, like voicing such a thing pained him, and Wayne understood.
It sounded a little too out there, a little like he was buying into a conspiracy.
Except he wasn’t. Wayne knew he wasn’t.
Jim Hopper might have been an alcoholic, a man living in pain and unconcerned with his own life, but if there was one thing he was solid for, it was shit like this.
He didn’t jump to conclusions. Didn’t believe the first thing people told him. Even at his worst, he did the work to see what was really happening, and made his decisions from there.
(Even if that decision was to accept the occasional bribe, or drive an intoxicated 13 year old Eddie home instead of hauling his ass into the drunk tank.)
“Harrington won’t admit it, but he’s got a hell of a concussion if not a full blown brain injury and he’s not reacting as well as he should to Suites trying to run him off the road.” Hopper continued. Angrily, he added, “Damn kid didn’t even come to me until they tried to break into his house last night.”
His fingers squeezed the wheel so hard Wayne heard the leather creak in protest.
“I’d take him, but my cabin is being renovated from…” He trailed off, heaving a sigh.
“A storm, so me and my kid are bunked with the Byers right now and we’re full up.”
Hawkins hadn't had a storm like that in years, but Wayne wasn't going to call him out on the blatant lie.
“I need a place to stash him for the next few weeks, until I can work with some of the higher ups sniffing around, and get them to call off their attack dogs.”
“And you want to stuff him with me.” Wayne finished.
“I know you don’t have the room.” Hopper admitted easily, stopping his truck at a red light and locking eyes with the other man. “But I also know you’ll be the last place anyone would look for him.”
'Ain’t that the damn truth.'
“You’re really gonna go this far for a Harrington?” Wayne asked, instead of the million of other questions leaping to the forefront of his mind.
This one, he figured, was the most important.
“He’s not his dad.” Hopper said, as firm as Wayne had ever heard him. “He’s not either of his parents, and he saved my little girl.”
Wayne hadn’t even known Hopper had another little girl, but he also knew better than to ask where the guy had found one.
It wasn’t his business, just as nothing else Jim was involved in, was his business.
Except, apparently, Steve Harrington.
“I’m gonna need my own truck if I’m takin' Harrington home.” Wayne said easily, instead of bothering to ask anything else.
If Jim said the kid was different than his daddy, then he was--because when it came to things like that, Jim didn't lie.
No point in it.
“I know. Just needed to talk to you first, without anyone overhearing.” Jim said, before swinging the police truck around and heading back to the Barn.
“I’ll stay in contact with you, and I’ll make sure Harrington pays you for the pleasure of your hospitality. Just--” Here Jim cut himself off, looking like he was struggling an awful lot with the next thing he wanted to say.
Once again, Wayne waited him out.
“Don’t let Steve fool you. He’s good at fooling people, letting them think he’s okay. Too good at it, and between the two of us, I have a real good idea of the reason why.”
A memory came to Wayne unbidden, of Richard Harrington and Chet Hagan, beating some poor kid in the highschool bathroom bloody. The grins on their faces as the poor guy wailed for them to stop.
How they almost hadn’t.
“Alright.” Wayne agreed.
Hopper swung back into the Barn's parking lot, and Wayne moved right to his own beat to shit truck, ready to follow Jim back to the police station.
He wasn’t a praying man, not anymore, but Catholisim wasn’t a thing that let you go easy.
He found himself sending up a quick prayer, fingers flicking in a kind of miniature version of the sign of the cross.
Considering his own kid’s history with Harrington, and the sheer small space of the trailer?
Wayne had a feeling it was needed.
