I don’t think we talk about Akali’s traumatic upbringing enough. It’s laid out plainly in Runeterra, given passing mentions in Star Guardian, and likely occurred similarly in K/DA-verse. Her mother really did not love her, and that’ll affect someone in different ways forever.

I understand why people like to headcanon a happier family of hers with Shen and/or Kennen or even Kayn, but I’ve seen maybe one fanart of Mayym ever, and that’s like such an interesting dynamic to explore, I wish it was talked about it more for the alternate universes.

Star Guardian Akali will always be famous to me and I’ll never forgive those who hated her for… not wanting to die and to be with her best friend who is growing distant because of this newfound doomed destiny?? When that best friend has been the one person she has been able to rely on???

The passing mentions to her less-than-ideal home life haunt me to this day:

“‘She barely lets me in the house!’”

“…her mother’s admonishments of ‘useless’ and ‘delinquent’ failed to hit their mark for once…”

“When things at home had gotten really bad...”

“‘We didn’t do this, kid!’ ‘Akali,’ she corrected out of pure habit.”

And then I’m sure no one thought that deeply of it, but K/DA Akali being “born into a martial arts dojo,” and then leaving to rap on the street cannot have earned her any approval from her mother. I definitely believe that Mayym detests her career even when she finds massive success.

I think she does a good job of masking the pain from her past, but she clearly always wants to be the best, always wants to prove her worth with her talents.

“More than I like to admit, I do get pretty angry sometimes,” from the Genius interview. Hmm I wonder who caused that to develop?

In conclusion, I think her difficult childhood is an extremely underutilized aspect of Akali’s character that absolutely shapes her personality as she grows older, and more of us (including canon writers) should consider that more often.

What's a favorite lore piece you've read for the sake of writing fics?

Oh goodie you gave me a good one here because I love to screech about this one whenever given the chance because I don't think a lot of people have ever noticed this.

This Grimoire card is from the Rise of Iron expansion in D1 and is one of Rasputin's Logs. It's what appears* to be his knee-jerk reaction to the Iron Lords' break in to Site 6 where SIVA is kept.

I reference this lore directly in my Isochronism fics, but it's also one of my absolute favorites regarding Rasputin, Felwinter, and SIVA because of some of the fascinating little details that, so many years further down the road into the story, we can pick out of it. I'll unpack it for us, but TLDR Rasputin is a fucking LIAR.

Rasputin likes to keep his records in some pretty purple prose code so I'll start by decoding most of the terms he uses here, and then I'll back up and loosely translate it for us all.

YUGA SUNDOWN- cancels all protocols for protecting humanity/activates MIDNIGHT EXIGENT

MIDNIGHT EXIGENT - long term counterattack protocol and moral structure change. Essentially allows Rasputin to ignore morals for the 'greater good'

[O] Means the Traveler /ie [O] Energy = Lightbearers

SKYSHOCK - usually there's other qualifiers attached to this but it indicates hostiles of an unprecedented scale

AURORA RETROFLEX - A defense subroutine - presumed to be for when Rasputin is directly threatened

SUBTLE ASSETS IMPERATIVE - Meaning this is in secret/does not escape Rasputin's records

SCRY OVERSIGHT - is an observation protocol but here is used in conjunction with SILENT VELES which means effectively "no oversight"

I'm going to start by pointing out that that very first line indicates SOMEONE gained unauthorized access into a terminal and managed to cancel at least one of Rasputin's protocols (YUGA SUNDOWN). Ballsy AF and imo pretty uncanny that they were even remotely successful. Rasputin immediately reverses this, but I can only assume the only person who would know to do this in the first place, let alone have the capabilities, would be Felwinter, especially among the Iron Lords, who appear to file in next in the very next line.

Rasputin records the arrival of the Iron Lords as a mighty surprise, and responds to them, in this record, as such, and as a threat.

This is incongruous with his admission later to Ana and the Guardian that he deliberately lured Felwinter (and his people) there deliberately. In this record, Rasputin has gone, "oh holy shit what the hell is that turn off all my moral structures I don't know what the hell those things are fire everything purge it all kill it kill it kill it!"

*And also I'm going to turn off my body camera (see SCRY OVERSIGHT + SILENT VELES) and don't ask permission or tell anyone ever (SUBTLE ASSETS IMPERATIVE)

Even though he made sure they found this vault.

This is all 1000% deliberate, premeditated, and a forged record my friends.

Edit: *semi- forged, or perhaps more accurately greatly bending the truth. Sylenth makes some damn good points in the comments that I kind of glossed over on my analysis and kind of took for granted but she’s right and it should be pointed out.

(also, worth noting, that REPLICATE.ELIMINATE.IMMUNIZE imperative sent to SIVA that is recorded here is different than what is recorded elsewhere also)

today’s lore musings in my continued hobby of drawing comparisons between real world history and that of Runeterra:

I was wondering if there was a deeper reason as to why Piltover + Zaun and Bilgewater all have guns, but the other regions are still using swords. The answer is simple, and one I already knew: No, it’s a video game first and foremost, each region based on a specific aesthetic time period, and they’re doing their worldbuilding backwards.

PnZ is 1800s steampunk so they get guns. Bilgewater is pirates and pirates have guns as they’re also of a similar time period. Everywhere else is based on a time period that did not have or use gunpowder.

Except for the more recent elaborations on the origins of Noxus, with the Noxii tribes and Sahn-Uzal very clearly being based on the Mongols. [sidenote: please listen to His Name Is Sahn-Uzal. It’s so cool. It’s Tuvan throat singing.] The Mongols did use gunpowder, which was first developed and used in 10-12th century China.

The thing is, Noxus may have started as the Mongol Empire, but at present it is inspired by the Roman Empire, which did not make use of gunpowder. Noxus as it is today (both in and out of universe) was obviously developed first, and so guns or any other approaching-modern technology has never been involved.

Though it’s worth mentioning that Noxus does know of Piltover’s weapons technology, making use of chemical weapons in invading Ionia, and Ambessa seeking out Hextech upon its invention. The solid canonicity of all this is… unfortunately murky these days but even if Hextech is no more, we better still pray Noxus doesn’t start using rifles. Though I’m pretty sure their warships already have cannons. Whatever!

Also of note is Ionia is (or at least was) making Hextech-inspired guns post-Noxian invasion, namely the one that Jhin uses. So maybe they’ll have more to defend themselves with in the future? Doubtful, as Ionia stands firm in it’s time period inspiration, but it’s an interesting detail that once again reminds me I should read the old Jhin and Zed comics.

Anyways if anyone knows of guns making appearances in other regions please let me know as I do know a lot but I am not an actual encyclopedia, and I find this sort of thing very interesting!

Overall, he writes like he always has places to be (true) so it's not the neatest but it gets the job done! 🍯🐝

The new adventurer's bible and kui's blog have some pages about clothing! But there isn't much about half-foots specifically, theres pages about tallmen elf and dwarf fashion. I'll try to put everything I have here with the translated versions for the ones I can find (without much organization hope that's ok)
