Finished the sketch of Lux for @icerosesummerbracket ! [ I'll color him later once I redo the linear on my phone, just wanted to put him out here now. ]

He's been a character I've personally loved from his first appearance as a visitor to Madame Spiceberry's inn. Though he ended up being pulled from his initial role as a hidden manipulator following [spoilers]'s death at the end of Book 1 to become Radiance's right-hand man, that just let his character develop and [ if you'll excuse the pun ] bloom further into its own.

This drawing is what I would envision him as somewhere towards the end of Book 2 and throughout Book 3, when he's somewhere around 16 years old. I did my best to incorporate the type of symbolism the series is known to use into my design, but I don't feel like I've done enough yet.

His hair is shaped to imitate a closed Scilla Siberica, or Siberian Squill. Squills are plants that represent loyalty or fidelity, which I felt tied in fairly well to his wholehearted devotion to Radiance and her plot at this time in the books.

His tie has a vine design, which is essentially the only bit of plant theming he has in his outfit. It was mentioned that Radiance wouldn't let him carry out his initial idea of theming himself around sunflowers to incorporate his plant magic into his new form, so he has to content himself with this. It still irks Radiance that he hasn't yet cast away all ties to that "impure" magic and fully accepted light magic, the only magic worth knowing in her eyes.

His cloak is comprised of a larger, heavier outer cloak and a thinner inner one, which come together to form the wings of an Indian Meal [aka Pantry] Moth. This particular type of moth is known to occasionally cannibalize other members of its kind. I don't remember if it's ever specifically mentioned what kind of moth Radiance is themed after, but I've been running with Pantry Moth because of her habit of bringing about the downfalls/deaths of everyone who works with her. Hence, she gives everyone who joins her a cloak similar to her wings. Lux wears his with pride as a symbol of his loyalty; a shame, really, given the events of Book 3's ending, but it was brilliant foreshadowing in hindsight.

I headcanon that his light magic always manifests with some kind of plant-based appearance, a quirk which Radiance also despises. His signature spell is, in fact, the White Rose, a fusion plant-light spell which Radiance would forbid him from ever using again if it wasn't so damn effective at driving away enemies. Because of his effectiveness as a spellcaster, she tolerates his blatant disregard for the sanctity of light magic with a poker face she has had ages to perfect.

He has acne. This one's for me more than anything else, as a former acne-ridden 16-year-old.

Anyway, that's all I have for this design. Gotta color and repost this drawing [ oog, color symbolism coming up next? idk if I can manage. ] I also have to get to work on his Book 4 design, cause I've got some great ideas for that one too.

Edit: yeag sorry about the right hand assumption, I think there's some plot built up in my brain that I'm accidentally incorporating without it being canon.

Before Lux's redemption arc (I can't remember which book it was) when Rose is trying to convince Lux to run away from Radiance and she says "Look me in the eyes and tell me that Radiance isn't going to destroy you" and Lux says "If you knew me as well as she does you'd know I can't do that"… I hate how it's interpreted as him knowing that Radiance isn't perfect when up to that point there's been no signs of that, when he's clearly struggled with eye contact up to that point��� like, there are loads of points throughout every book where he's implied to be Autistic and everyone just ignores this one???

It always seemed so obvious to me it was about the eye contact part, but people go "that's not the point of what Rose was saying though" to dismiss that but like, Lux is Trying Not To Think about what Rose is really saying so he deflects. His arc just doesn't make sense if he already knew at that point that Radiance was evil

All right, according to the tie results and round 3 results, we've reached the finale

Daisy lore established so far: It uses it/its pronouns, and is in the 16-20 age range. It's an automaton and is canonically like 10 feet tall, and is in a relationship with Cian, Kivan's older brother.

Fennel lore established so far: Belladonna's half-brother, both of them being children of Radiance's right hand man and being essentially adopted by Radiance after his death. Fennel's strength comes from the fact that he never gave up on being good and kind, even though it only brought more trouble and tragedy upon him. He helps save Lily when they get captured by Radiance, he's important to Lux's switching sides, and of course he means a lot to Belladonna. Lastly, though somewhat more of a fun fact compared to everything else, he keeps rats as pets.

Zephyr lore established so far: Despite having a prominent role in at least one book, everyone seems to have a habit of forgetting him. One of the adult characters of the cast, he was originally on Radiance's side but not out of malice; once he realizes what she's really up to, he stands up to her and switches sides.

Fennel lore established so far: Belladonna's half-brother, both of them being children of Radiance's right hand man and being essentially adopted by Radiance after his death. Fennel's strength comes from the fact that he never gave up on being good and kind, even though it only brought more trouble and tragedy upon him. He helps save Lily when they get captured by Radiance, he's important to Lux's switching sides, and of course he means a lot to Belladonna. Lastly, though somewhat more of a fun fact compared to everything else, he keeps rats as pets.

Sunrise and Sunset lore established so far: They're minor villains throughout book 4, before getting redeemed and being allies in book 5. During their time as villains, their gimmick is that both twins pretend to be one single person, thus confusing people as to how they're able to do so much in such an efficient way. However, after pretending to be one person so long, their character arcs following that are about trying to figure out how to live as their own, separate, selves.

Asphodel lore established so far: Asphodel is a character who dies before the story even begins, but haunts the narrative. It seems implied that she was Radiance's first target before Rose, and at the end of the series her ghost is one of the ones that kills Radiance

Good morning everyone, i'm thinking about the way Lux tries to theme himself after sunflowers in Book 2 (once hes revealed he's working for Radiance) but she shuts the idea down immediately. He wanted to find a way to reconcile his love for plants with his turn to the light, but Radiance wouldn't allow it because it doesn't matter what he wants, all that matters is her vision

That scene from Lux was younger and he's scrubbing his clothes until his fingers are bloody so they look immaculate for Radiance's arrival 😭😭

And the way it's paralleled against him trying to get a stain out of his clothes in the present, and how in the flashback he's worried because he doesn't want to disappoint her because he still thinks the world of her, and in the present he's worried because he's actually terrified of disappointing her because he's seen what happens to the ones that fail now

I looooove love the moth symbolism in this danm story btw. I know we've already talked about Radiance but WHAT ABOUT LUX'S MOTH CLOAK.... HELLO..... I think we really ignored that whole *gestures* thing and the dead moth in the light fixture being the same type of moth as their cloak resembles.... hello.... and the line about like. "It looks like it starved to death trying to get inside the lightbulb" like hello. Can we talk about that. Why does nobody talk about that.

SO TRUE you just know that if he didn't turn around and go on his redemption arc, It Would Have Killed HIm
