An email. A brief text. Have Foggy excitedly brag to Matt and Karen that he has #something to show them tomorrow morning that is going to blow their minds #But no. They just expected that people would hang in there waiting for a point.#I have always loved the mystery solving aspect of this show and so I personally felt very disconnected with everything #for most of this season. So to just bring this up in the last 2 episodes feels a bit late.#But I do love them getting their sleuth on together. And I guess it makes sense if things changed now because Karen's back.#Like her departure paused everything and her arrival back is just as everything hits a new gear.#Matt wasn't meant to work this all out on his own.#I still think it wasn't worth Foggy's life but it's an interesting plot piece.#And I like Matt hyping Karen up at the beginning. Like no duh she's good at finding things - she was a reporter.#Matt should really invest in a coat so he isn't wandering around dressed like Daredevil in places that likely have cameras.#I'd say he could have borrowed one from Frank but... now I'm picturing that conversation and that seems a little farfetched.#Frank has like two outfits I doubt he has a coat he can lend out.#(The new gif limits are crazy FYI. Maybe it's a 'study finds water is wet' type of thought, but

considering it's an action movie whose overall plot is "immortal warriors Fuck Shit Up™️", I think it's significant that in The Old Guard the thing that makes Copley pull red strings through his Murder Conspiracy Board and say "[Merrick] doesn't care what [Andy]'s done with [her immortality]" is the people they save, not the ones they kill

Most of the Conspiracy Board is him circling random newspaper headlines and faces on old photographs to (more or less realistically) follow the immortals' treck through the world and big historical events. Which is, in-canon, not much different than putting portraits from different centuries next to a picture of Keanu Reeves and saying "they look the same, clearly Reeves is an immortal!"

But then there are the connections. A little girl holding Joe's hand in WW1 becoming the youngest (and first) woman to be awarded a Nobel Prize for Medicine (suck it, Kozak). Or the grandchild of a family that Andy saved from [something] helping people escape from the Khmer Rouge genocide in Cambodia.

They are warriors. They have fought and been in the midst of countless wars, major or minor, throughout history. They must have killed as many people as they saved... and yet.

It's not them taking out a random warlord or dictator or rabidly hateful politician that has tangible repercussions in history. It's the children and families they get out of war zones, save from accidents, protect from natural disasters. People to whom they give a second chance at life, and grow to change the world (or even just their own world), like a mysterious stranger once changed theirs just by holding out a hand or patching a wound.

I don't know I just think it's particularly neat

#my ponderings #the old guard #I know we all love to play the 'if you could go back in time and kill One Person who would it be' game #but I think a movie that makes it EXTREMELY SATISFYING to see the Bad Guys die -#- having 'actually the best and greatest changes happen when people help each other' as its underlying message...#it means something #I also think it connects to Andy feeling like nothing she does changes anything at the start of the movie #for 80% of her life you could Solve A Problem by Taking Out The Guy Causing The Problem #especially in battle! you kill the general and you win. if you win the Problem Is Solved #but then everything becomes More Complex. the Problems™️ are globalized and/or systemic.#and Winning a Battle means just killing people. it doesn't Stop The Problem (nor really end a war)#so it feels useless #and even when they save people... they can’t stay in people's lives for long because immortality #which means they can never know what happens to the people they save #they don't (and can't) have the full picture

With the reveal that Aduo didn’t actually want to be the mother of the nation, looks like we now have a concrete path to a happy ending for Jinshi.

Though I actually really want to see him as the Emperor one day (at least for a time), it would be thematically appropriate if Jinshi takes not after the Emperor, but after Gaoshun and becomes the retainer of the future Emperor.

#knh spoilers #kusuriya no hitorigoto #the apothecary diaries #jinshi #aduo #maomao #looking at gaoshun and taomei #it does solve everything #jinshi would still be able to be close to the seat of power #and do good for the nation #in guiding the future emperor the same way gaoshun guided him #since he’s not power hungry he would have the emperor’s interests (not just as the leader of the nation) but as a family member at heart #and at the same time he wouldn’t be pressured to take in more than one spouse #maomao would be free to explore the nation as she pleases #the history of the owner of the jade plaque with the favored son of a former emperor #abdicating and eventually being given a name #seems to be foreshadowing for what will happen even if Jinshi’s true heritage does get out #I’m sure factions will try to use him as a piece #but in the same vein that maomao decided her own fate herself #it would make sense for Jinshi to achieve what he wants to do regardless of the circumstances of his birth #and it would be sweet if he took after his foster father #win win solution for everyone really #yeah ok I’ll be fine even if jinshi doesn’t become emperor as long as he becomes retainer #maomao would be better leading medical reforms rather than be an empress too #it would also be subversion of the usual chosen one will lead tropes #yeah no how about the secret prince becomes the mentor instead

whenever someone asks me for help or advice i want to beam all my lived experience and advice that helped me through it directly into their mind to try and spare them as much pain and stress as possible, but because i cant actually do that what ends up happening is i dump everything i know related to that topic hoping something helps them like

#and yes. i am the older sibling i am quite literally the guinea pig by birthright #its hardwired into me to make thing as painless as possible for my little brother that it ends up becoming a huge part of my personality #but i also have adhd so my version of advice is 'blurt out everything that might be even a little related to the situation #and pray that something sticks with them'#also like its hard to describe but sometimes you wont really get what someone means because its just the wrong person or wrong time #when i was a kid my dad would explain how to solve a math problem and i wouldnt get it until someone else explained it to me #and something *clicked*. and then when id tell my dad i learned smth new he'd say i LITERALLY said the same thing you just #werent listening or smth. but its not that at all.. i cant really know what its like for smth to click until it happens #i used to think i wasnt ace bc everything i saw talking abt asexuality didnt ring any bells until i found someone talking abt #something that i DID resonate with and then i went from there. so i guess what im trying to say its one thing to share what i learned #and another thing for someone to go through something or hear it from someone else to really get what i mean. shrugs #yapping

what time period is the professor layton series in?? the prequel trilogy and the main trilogy. when are they supposed to be taking place

i could've sworn one of the games (though i forget which) mentions that someone's been to the moon already which would put them at least in the late 60s into the 70s going by our world's timeline... but i don't know maybe space travel was discovered earlier in this universe???

#melonposting #professor layton #it would be useful if i just had a comprehensive timeline of events in this series so it would be easier to plot things out #but just for the sake of argument... just for funzies...#let's say randall disappeared in 1949 #then miracle mask takes place in 1967 (18 years after randall's disappearance in 1949)#and then extrapolating backwards - if luke is 11 and hershel is 35 in miracle mask #then luke was born in 1956 and hershel in 1932 #luke is 15 when katrielle is born. so she's born in 1971 #he and layton go missing ten years later. that'd be 1981 #and then it's another eleven years (when she's 21) that kat has her mystery-solving agency and finds her father and everything. so 1992 #(which makes the more modern nonsense we see in her game/anime more plausible)#and just for the heck of it. if we're presuming alfendi is 29 at the same time that katrielle is 21 then he's 8 years older than her #putting his birth year somewhere around 1963 #and then... hm... luke is 13 in unwound future. and the explosion in which claire died was said to have happened 10 years prior #so when luke was 3 years old... in 1959 #and clive was 13 at that time. exactly 10 years older than luke. so he would've been born around 1946 #of course it's hard to pinpoint exact dates when you don't know anyone's birthday or what month a game is taking place in #and of course this is making a ton of assumptions #among other things that the moon landing really did take place in 1969 in this universe #i don't even remember which game mentioned the moon landing! which is annoying!#i think it was unwound future so i tried to have it in the ballpark of 1969 (by placing miracle mask two years prior in 1967)#(going off of luke's ages of 11 in miracle mask and 13 in unwound future as reference of the time passage between them)#at the very least i'm sure the moon landing was referenced somewhere within the prequel or main triologies #so unwound future is the last game it could've been mentioned in. so either it takes place in 1969 or an earlier game in the timeline does #but i'm willing to allow for the moon landing to have taken place before 1969 in the laytonverse. their technology is very weird after all #if i place it somewhere earlier in the 60s then the dates can be pushed back. and this fic i'm reading would be totally canon-compliant!#cuz it describes angela & henry 5 years after randall's disappearance being somewhere in the 1940s #which would only be possible if the moon landing takes place earlier for the dates to be pushed back that far #(of course a minor decade discrepancy does nothing to ruin my enjoyment of the fic. i just think it would be nice to make it all work out)

#is it so strange to like nuance and complication? i feel like in the last year ive realized im much more contrary that i thought #but i just feel like nuance is a good thing. ideas can be black or white on specific points. is blank bad? yes. next question. but issues #are often more complicated than that. are groups of people out there in the world doing bad things? yes and you shouldnt let them get away #with it but painting them as evil and inhuman is unhelpful if you want to solve social problems. people dont just behave #badly for no reason. and its not even just social issues. science is complicated. almost everything is more complicated that u would expect.#especially when ur working with whole systems. is that frustrating if ur trying to make a point or solve a problem? yes. but i thats what #makes it interesting. if the solutions were simple it wouldnt be as fun. maybe im alone in that. ive had that argument before. or in the #media i consume. the most complelling stories to me are the ones that r imperfect or fundamentally flawed. it makes them much more #interesting to talk about than something thats just good on all fronts. or in the fics i read. i dont want empty fluff where everyone's #happy. i want it to b fucked up and messy. its more interesting that way. media is more interesting when it gives me complicated feelings #does it make me sad that bad things happen to good ppl? yes but the world is certainly more interesting bc that is the case. its just #strange to watch ppl struggle with nuance as a concept. the internet is not a place of nuance. so its fun when u see someone who is #interested in having difficult and at times contentious conversations and has a willingness to admit when they make mistakes. and #its frustrating to watch internet dip shits attack them and try to hold them forever to misspeaks or uninformed statments that they condemn #after they inform themselves. and seeing it happen at a mass scale is like genuinely disorienting to me #as an outside observer. i cant imagine what its like to b at the center of it. but thats just how the internet is. full of freak behavior #that would b considered deranged if it happened in person face to face. this really was our the hundred line: last defense academy (actual thoughts in tags with implied but minimal spoilers)

#nobody has ever posted that line before i'm sure however i am tempted to post this every time i complete an ending #i will say though that the first route ending kind of gives me a similar feeling to the ending of v3 where i'm just left with #a sense of 'it feels like everything went wrong and nothing is solved' but this game is already better because the point is that #it's wrong rather than that it's good to keep the mystery alive #many people like that about v3 but i have always felt unease towards it bc there was more lost than what was satisfied at the end #this game seems like a perfect evolution of that theme because it's there to inspire you to keep going to discover what could have been #this is like the culmination of the progress of all of the themes from previous kodaka games #including the hope/despair from the first two dangan games but done in a very fun spin in my opinion where it makes you think about #your own opinions on whether humanity is good or bad or neither and makes you understand why the characters feel that way from both sides #i didn't really find any character to be that unrelatable in their motivations because i could easily see myself feeling that way #the characters seem like they both fall into existing kodaka tropes while also having unique updated aspects about them that make their #personalities feel more real than before and harder to predict exactly how you will feel about them by the end #i was very pleasantly surprised that even characters i thought would be annoying or boring i ended up changing my mind about #well for the most part but the thing is that there is still a ton for me to do with them all so that could also change at any point #i am very exited to keep playing and don't feel burned out at all yet #seth.txt #the hundred line

Speaking of fictional characters who would eat the Paradise fictional characters for breakfast. I just started rewatching Leverage Redemption to get ready for the new season and. Kane Bradford would get his shit comprehensively wrecked by any given Leverage team. If Mr. 'the world deserves to know' had had Leverage International to reach out to before he fully spiraled that shit would have been shut down. Like, 'hey workers are getting poisoned on this project and I got canned for raising the danger, and there's shady shit going on' is like. Yeah that checks out as a Leverage client pitch to the point that I'm not sure that that doesn't summarize a Leverage client pitch or two. The shady shit of Sinatra being behind Kane Bradford's company's work and Very Invested and it not being what it seems would be an act two rug pull where they have to change the con and the mark, but they'd still pull it off, stop the project and get the money for the workers' medical treatment and their families.

... Then you still have the incoming disaster which. Well. 'let's go steal a supervolcano' would be a new one.

#hardison's in space on a satellite i mean. give redemption 6 seasons and a movie and they could escalate to that point.#id rather they didn't personally and in doubt they would - as much as redemption is a bit more willing to take a bit more license #they still get the this is about the little guy. hardison is doing his stuff bc of certain bigger pictures that need a birds eye view #but the individual teams are about the little guy. though we still have tension with that #with breanna pointing out problems that still continue in the bigger picture #and i will be interested with what they do with that tension because i think it's interesting #but if you're writing fic you could tell me hardison and breanna and a bunch of scientists connected by leverage international #solved the problem of a supervolcano and I'd roll with it #the alternative is you do a genre shift of the team into post apocalyptic fiction #which could also be interesting for different reasons #theyve stolen the department of defense taken down elected officials including the president of a small country stopped a bioterror attack #and that's all just in leverage. they'll be fine.#something something a billionaire bunker run by billionaires on a puppeted system and with all handpicked people #to maintain perfect order and normalcy. everything about keep the calm over tell the truth.#the antithesis of Nate's leverage finale monologue. justice or order. someday you will have yo make a choice. i love the femc playthrough sososososo much to the point i see her route as the "real" persona 3 however i will never forgive atlus for making ken a romance option there . why did they do that
