If you chose to portray torture unrealistically you aresupporting real world torture. That is not anexaggeration. Torturers in the real world point to fiction as the source that ‘proves’ torture is effective.

When we write torture ‘working’or write that it is effective we give the people who condone, enable, encourageand practice torture our support and we give them ‘justification’ to continue.

An assortment of headcanons! - Kaito loves dogs- When Kaito was a kid, due to all the lore of the constellations and stuff, he would always imagine himself as a greek/roman hero fighting monsters and becoming a constellation himself in the stars- Hoshi teaches Kaito how to gamble…better. He’s still bad at it though.- For Kaito’s birthday everyone got together and rented him a planetary so they could all celebrate together. Kaito kept trying to run off because he didn’t want them to see him crying tears of joy.- Naegi and Kaito are a dangerous pair of optimism. Don’t even involve Kaede. It’s dangerous. At first Tsumugi was just there, but then she really picked up and I love how she’s a deadpan snarker basically! And the blues used on her palette are pretty as well!

It was as wild as it sounds.- Tsumugi and Kirumi talk frequently, for Kirumi is able to assist Tsumugi when she makes cosplays and is able to give solid opinions as well- Tsumugi is the class matchmaker sorry I don’t make the rules.- This …isn’t really a hc per se but . . *coughs* so in the future if Tsumugi and Angie had a child, that artist would be a “con-artist” con artist. Everything? I legit love everything about Kaede. I love her flaws and her imperfections. She’s a musician, she’s my favorite colours, she hecking plays piano, she’s outgoing and funny and a lovable goof ball.

Awww, thanks bud! I do appreciate!

Like I’ve said before, my take on Junko’s existence as a character has always come off to me as “you, player, have a bit of despair mania yourself to want to play this game” which I find really clever and refreshing. You can’t remove Junko from the equation because she is the heart of the franchise--the protags are interchangeable, but that zeal for despair for despair’s sake forms the core of the series.

hey nate! just a question about food - i know you hate the fish thing but what about the rest of school food? is it high quality? and what about japanese food in general?

Good question! School lunch, in general, in REALLY great in Japan. The meals are planned out every month by nutritionists so you are getting a really nice variety of foods that would meet dietary needs. 

Now personally its a case by case situation for me. I’m not a huge fan of strong smelling/tasting fish. I adore mild fish like salmon and tuna, but you get a variety of seafood in school lunches here….and there are some places that still get whale even though its unacceptable to a lot of other cultures. 

In general I’m a huge fan of Japanese food. Okonomiyaki, shabu shabu and yakitori are amazingly good. Its kinda lame coming from me since I’m a larger guy, but food has always interested me. The taste, presentation, cooking methods, its all really neat and I love taking pictures of the food no matter where in the world I am. I would encourage people to come and try things that are different. You have to have an open mind and be adventurous but you may find you like cow tongue, or pig uterus, or insects. Yeah they worried me at first, too…but they’re great!

i asked this a while back, but i think tumblr may have eaten it. what are your thoughts on tsumiki? she's easily one of my favourite characters, and my favourite sdr2 one, so i'd really love to hear your thoughts on her and her character

I’m a pretty big Mikan fan! She’s easily one of my favorite sdr2 characters by this point too—only edged out by Hinata and Kamukura. She’s also definitely my favorite culprit out of all the Chapter 3 culprits in any DR game, even if the murders themselves and the evidence were messy. Her performance in Chapter 3 was just that enjoyable, honestly.

It took me a little while to warm up to her at first, since I was really wary about her being delegated to The Fanservice Character™, but I came around quite a bit when going back through sdr2 after some time had passed. (I still wish they wouldn’t play up the fanservice quite so much with her considering the fiasco that was dr3, but well.)

I find her incredibly interesting as a character, especially because of how understandable her shift to despair is while also never being excused or condoned by the narrative. It’s easy to sympathize with Mikan, but it’s also easy, especially on a second playthrough, to understand just how incredibly smart she really is. Her ability to read people is unparalleled by most of the other sdr2 characters, except perhaps Komaeda. And while she frequently over-analyzes what she perceives due to her years of abuse and trauma, the fact remains that she’s extremely good at picking up on cues others often miss.

What I like best about Mikan is that she’s not necessarily the best person. Whether she always had the potential to be that way, or whether the abuse and trauma she suffered through helped shape her mindset as a person, there is certainly a side to her that is very calculating, cold, and bitter, even prior to her regaining her memories of the Remnants of Despair.

Her pleasure at being a nurse prior to Chapter 3, and presumably pre-despair, certainly stems from a love of helping others, but there’s also a certain degree of enjoyment at having people under her care who are weaker and more helpless than herself. She alludes to this in her island mode events, where she mentions that she really enjoys horror movies because of all the blood, gore, and “helpless people.”

In a way, she and Saionji are interesting parallels of each other. Both have endured abuse and bullying, but where Saionji seeks out other weak targets in order to subject them to the same kind of abuse she had to endure, Mikan seeks them out because she enjoys the helplessness and dependency they have on her. Which is terrifying, yes, but also fascinating.

Perhaps it’s the Umineko fan in me, but I also feel like it’s a theme that comes up a lot, “the bullied victim becomes the bully and still feels like they’re the victim.” Sdr2 has quite a lot of voice actors from Umineko, but none of them voice Mikan in particular—which is a shame, since I feel she’d fit right in with the Ushiromiya family.

Mikan is a chameleon, but in a different way than would be expected. Rather than blending in to the point of coming across as uninteresting or bland, she instead blends in with what she thinks people perceive her as. She acts out the part of “clumsy, helpless nurse who keeps messing things up” because she knows the kind of reactions it will get—in part because she really has become somewhat dependent on the bullying she receives, sad as that is. But it’s also a way of making sure that others continue to underestimate her.

Realizing just how much of her own helplessness and clumsiness was a very deliberately crafted façade in order to avoid conflict within the group is chilling, because it truly provides insight into just how much smarter she is than people give her credit for, both in the fandom and in-game. And there were always these signs that she was calculating and cunning and not nearly as okay with being mistreated as she pretended to be. But they go largely unnoticed for the first part of the game because she’s a very, very good actress.

It’s still such a shame that dr3 never fulfilled the potential there could have been with the sdr2 characters and with Mikan in particular. There was room for so much exploration of the characters’ descent into despair—even if, as Kodaka says, they were supposed to be “small fries” to Junko compared to the dr1 cast, there were so many other ways to portray what happened to them rather than the rushed nature of the brainwashing videos.

I still like to imagine a much more insidious kind of brainwashing sometimes, something that would have started small. If Mikan was supposed to be the first one of the sdr2 cast to be brainwashed, then it would have made much more sense in my opinion to explore her growing dependency on Junko, the ways in which Junko took advantage of and manipulated her into becoming twisted and jaded and cynical because that potential was already ripe for the picking.

Instead what we got was Mikan being used for even more unnecessary fanservice and an immediate overnight change in her personality. And all the interactions between her and Junko were used for even more fanservice—in particular, the abuse itself was fetishized and made to look “sexy” and “arousing,” which made me more uncomfortable than almost all of the other Mikan fanservice combined.

Nonetheless, even dr3 can’t ruin the fact that Mikan is one of the sdr2 characters I personally find the most interesting. The horrible things she’s experienced have made her willing to do horrible things in turn, and that fact is understandable without ever being condoned. Her regression to her despair memories in Chapter 3, as well as her anger and resentment at the rest of the group, shows that she’s always been aware of just how much she’s been mistreated, and it’s incredibly fun to see her call so many of the characters out on their passivity.

For the most part, she’s someone who is perfectly capable of realizing that what she’s doing is wrong, and she even feels bad to some degree about how wrong it is—which is, I think, one of the many reasons she asks for forgiveness so much in Chapter 3 when she’s on the verge of breaking down. But she also has grown so cynical that she believes she’s entitled to act the way she does. Her logic is, no one cares about her, so why should she care about anyone else? Except for her beloved, of course. It’s extremely interesting to see her attempts at self-justification, as well as how little she take most people at their word when they say they like her or want to get to know her.

Anyway, this was an extremely fun ask to write—I haven’t written about Mikan much besides a few Chapter 3 comparisons, so I’m glad I had the chance to do so. Thank you so much for asking!

This is really difficult to give a hard answer on, because it depends on the story and what you're trying to do with it.If your story is more realistic, the having a senseless death might contribute to the sense of realism. If you are writing a light-hearted children's book series, then indiscriminately killing off characters all of a sudden will feel like it's for shock value. If you're writing a fake-out narrative, then that's exactly what you want.Depends on what kind of emotional impact you're trying to evoke.

are you enjoying breath of the wild so far, nate? i havent been able to follow the streams + dont have the time to watch it on youtube, which is a shame. also, apart from breath of the wild, what loz game is your favourite?

BotW has been an absolute dream so far. I am in love with the characters. I’ve never had this much fun with an open world game before. There is just enough content and empty space on the world map and the lack of music is something I actually enjoy. 

Other than BotW…my favorite game might be A Link to the Past. I played the original Zelda and Zelda 2 when I was younger but ALttP was the first one I really got in to.

If not that then it’d be Link’s Awakening. I LOVED that game.

haha,, well right now I really only have backstories for Ouma, Kiibo, and bits and pieces for Amami. I’m kind of working on them as I design them, but got a little waylaid due to life just getting in the way…

I’m really happy he turned out to be someone important in the game, ppl expected him to be more of a comic relief character that no one cares about, and while he does have a lot of comical reactions and sprites, he helped out a lot and was generally just a damn good guy.

Umineko definitely has one of the best OSTs of all time! It’s really hard to narrow it down to just one pick given how incredible absolutely all the songs are, so I’ll give a top 5!

Again, it’s really hard because I also love a bunch of other dai songs and I didn’t even get a chance to put M.Zakky on the list.

Anyone who hasn’t played Umineko yet, I’d really recommend giving it a read if you have the chance! It’s long but great, and the OST is one of the absolute best things about it. So many songs set the mood so perfectly for scenes that were either terrifying or heart-breaking.
