Hi hey gurl! I've been trying to understand something... when it comes to performance, is it vertices or polycount that really matters? I’m trying to get a clearer picture of how they affect gameplay. Hope this isn’t too random tho 😂

Hey nonny, thanks for the great question! I'm not sure if you are looking for a non-creator answer or if you maybe have some experience with meshing, but I try to cover some technical aspects that hopefully will make you understand vertices and polygons better! It's a bit of a longer journey, so grab some snacks and settle in!

Disclaimer: This is my opinion and the definitions are how I came to understand them. I believe what I say to be correct, but I am also human and may have misunderstood something, and making mistakes can happen. Thanks for understanding! TL;DR There will be calculations made on every vertex and every face present in a mesh. So the more you have of either, the worse it is for performance, but if the vertex count is much higher than the poly count, the mesh is especially unoptimized and may impact performance more than it would in an optimized state. Vertex and polygons are actually connected, literally. To understand, we need to start with the basics.

Vertices are points in a 3d space that provide the foundations of a grid-like 3d structure, known as a mesh. Connected through lines known as edges, they form a 3d shape. Three edges form a triangle, or tri for short, also known as a face or polygon. These terms can be used interchangeably, but a tri always has three vertices, whereas faces and polygons can have more than three vertices.

A polygon with 4 vertices (known as a quad) is very commonly used in 3D-modelling, because it can be used to create very neat and well-structured meshes (it is easy to make grids using rectangular shapes). A mesh that is made in a grid-like way may have the same overall shape as one made out of triangles, but the flow of the edges is different, and this plays a role during animation. Having these grid-like lines is usually better for moving and animating characters and avoiding shading issues.

Most meshes for games are thus initially made with 4-sided polygons. These quads are usually further broken down into tris if they aren't already, and three is the least amount of vertices needed to form a coplanar surface.

When the quads of the left sphere are turned into triangles, the grid structure will remain intact:

We can further break down the elements of a polygon. Let's take a simple cube. It has 6 sides, or faces, and each face has 4 vertices that make up the corners. But if we count all the vertices, we will notice that each face shares vertices with other faces. So on a simple cube, we have 6 faces and 8 vertices.

Depending on how a mesh is made though, it may have a lot of edges. You can think of those like cuts in the mesh. If we wanted to cut up the cube, we would separate each face from each other. Now we still have the same number of faces (6), but the vertices are suddenly much higher, because now, every face has its own set of 4 vertices, meaning that we have a total of 24 vertices.

In video games, polygons are usually rendered as triangles. So for our cube, that would mean that every face would be diagonally cut in half, giving us a total number of 12 faces/polygons/tris.

If we take it to the next level and separate all of these triangles from each other, the vertex count would be 36! To recount, on a mesh that is not split, it's only 8. Having these cuts (or split edges, as they are commonly called) in strategic places in the mesh where vertices are split can be important for the final look of the mesh in the Sims games.

You may have already encountered some meshes that have dark spots or shading in some parts, often at the hems. That can happen if the mesh is not split correctly in these areas. It has to do with how the normals work (they are important to how light gets reflected off the mesh).

To not go too off-topic, I won't get into detail about that here.

Ideally, a mesh is only split where it needs to be so it will look right. If there are unnecessary cuts, then the vertex count (and with it, the polygon count) goes up when it doesn't really have to be. If a mesh has a lot of these areas where a lot of faces have their own vertices, then the vertex count is much higher than on a mesh with fewer split edges. This can be a sign that a mesh is not well-optimized. So if you see a mesh that has much more vertices than polys, you may want to question it in regards to performance. CC converters will probably know that Sims 4 meshes come with a lot of these cuts that are needed for Sims 4 because of the way the CC is made (for example, pants have such a split edge cut to allow boots to look tucked-in), but those are superfluous for TS3. So I encourage every Sims 3 CC creator to remove those to save on both vertices and polygons when they are converting! The thing is, in the game, the mesh will be processed and there will be calculations made on every vertex and every face present. Each vertex is indexed, and triangles need to be drawn from the information. Other processes will need to also use the vertices for their calculations. There is more going on during rendering than simply drawing the polygons. The shaders have to calculate their effects, the textures need to be rendered and applied accordingly, filtering such as anti-aliasing will be applied, etc. So the more geometry you have in a mesh, the worse it gets in terms of performance. More geometry means that the polygons are smaller and more numerous, which will in turn affect the vertex count too.

As CC creators, we cannot address all the factors that impact performance, as we can only influence a small part, but we can try to adhere to the game's standards to minimize the performance impact as best as we can. If we wish our meshes to be more detailed than what the game's standards are, then we impact the performance more.

Instead of just cranking up detail like crazy, it is good to see if we really need it. And ask questions such as how often will the player view the item closely? If the player is usually far away from the item or it is a very small item, making it super detailed will not really do much, since the item looks the same as a low-poly item from a certain distance. We can also make compromises and maybe make an item 50% more detailed instead of 200% more detailed, providing a more detailed item while minimizing the performance impact.

This is a bit off-topic, but since I'm here already, we may refrain from using a bigger texture for a very plain piece without any notable intricate detail (like a basic T-shirt, for example), since it already looks fine with a smaller texture, but it may pay off for a highly detailed texture which looks visibly better with a bigger texture, warranting the performance impact (like a lace blouse with an intricate pattern, stitching, and small buttons).

On that note, using the texture space efficiently can also do wonders to increase detail. Use all the real estate you have on that UV map (that is a 2d representation of your 3d mesh and used to apply the texture to the mesh). Have you tried upscaling the texture yet? Okay okay, I'll stop now and get...

Back on topic: The number of polygons also matters, not just the vertex count. When a mesh has lots of smaller polygons, a lot of them are necessary to form the entire mesh. Bigger polys will not provide as much fine details, but will have less impact on hardware because fewer calculations to be made. A good mesh uses only as much detail as needed while using as few polygons as possible to still maintain functionality.

Sims clothing meshes need to animate and move well, so they need to be able to flex at the joints, and the shape must also be able to change to accommodate body sizes, thus the mesh needs the minimum amount of geometry to achieve this and still look decent, which is a sweet spot the developers have to find to craft meshes that perform well while looking reasonably good.

A good habit for creators looking to make meshes for the Sims games is to look at similar meshes in the game and study them (so for TS3, check the original TS3 game meshes, for TS4, check the original TS4 game meshes). Check how many polys they use and how good the topology (structure) of the mesh is.

For example, how many rows of edges do they usually have, and what sizes are the polys usually? How many vertices are in one round of edge loops, for example for the arms? How are the different mesh parts connected to each other, where are split edges used? Then imitate that.

The professionals who made these original meshes knew what they were doing, and they optimized them to be gameplay-friendly, so if in doubt, copy what they do.

Game meshes are usually especially optimized and it is very much game-dependent how they are structured, so a mesh from a different game can look totally different. CC Creators looking to optimize performance in their meshes should try to match the original game's mesh in terms of structure and polycounts. This will also ensure they animate well!

You were lounging in your room, seated at your desk, typing away on your laptop. The first day as a manager had left you utterly drained especially when the boyband you were assigned to manage felt more like a pack of wild animals than professional idols.

“How to be a good manager…” you murmured as you clicked on a YouTube video.

“You don’t need a tutorial to be a good manager,” came a sudden voice from behind you, Baby’s voice.

You didn’t even flinch. “Still, i want to do better for all of you.”

“You already are the best for us,” he said, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world. “I picked you, didn’t I? And my choices are always the best ones.”

You sighed. “That’s what you think, what about the others? I’m not even sure I’m cut out for this job. You guys don’t even have your own agency building. You’re literally using my apartment as your base, how am I supposed to feel secure in a job that can’t even guarantee my salary?” You glanced at Baby flatly and scoffed, “This has to be the dumbest decision I’ve ever made, i should’ve stayed at my old job.”

Turning back to your screen, you resumed typing, listing out schedules, basic rules for the members, and anything else to keep them at least somewhat organized. Baby stayed quiet, watching you work before eventually moving over to sit on your bed.

“…Sorry,” he muttered.

“For what?” you asked.

“For being a burden,” he said softly. “I didn’t mean for you to struggle this much because of us. But… we have to do something. For someone, if we don’t, our souls will be eaten.”

You stopped typing, staring at him in confusion.

"What are you even talking about?”

Baby fiddled with his fingers, clearly unsure how to explain it, “If I were allowed to tell you everything—” he stopped mid-sentence, abruptly pressing his hands to his ears.

“Baby? Hey, are you okay?” You rushed to his side, concerned. “Is something wrong with your ears?”

“Did you forget me already?” he asked suddenly, looking at you with a strange intensity.

You blinked, “What? No, I… I didn’t forget you. We just met, didn’t we?”

“I chose you because we have met before.” He slowly lowered his hands. “These voices… they keep haunting me. I can’t escape them, but when I’m with you, they go quiet. You silence them because you’re the one I need.”

You let out a nervous laugh, "Did you just read something romantic online or something? That doesn’t sound like you at all.”

“It is me,” he replied, calmly.

“Come on, that kind of talk doesn’t suit a guy with a baby face and a deep voice.”

“That’s just part of my charm."

You chuckled, a small smile tugging at your lips. For a second, it felt like he was back to being the Baby you knew.

“Can you do me a favor?” he asked.

“Of course… as long as it’s nothing weird,” he grinned, clearly expecting the opposite. You were already starting to regret. Without warning, he leaned his head on your shoulder. If he hadn’t asked first, you probably would’ve shoved him away by now.

“…Is this considered weird?”

“Kinda,” you mumbled, your hand absentmindedly stroking his hair. What even is this moment? You weren’t the type to let people get physically close especially not someone like Baby.

You thought maybe, this moment of peace would last long enough to keep you from going fully insane managing a broke boyband. But you were wrong.

The door to your room slammed open, Jinu and his gang burst in like action movie villains only to freeze, staring at the sight of you and Baby in a position that definitely looked too intimate.

“What are you two doing?”

Jinu’s voice cracked mid-sentence, a perfect mix of shock and scandalized disbelief. Behind him, Mystery blinked slowly as if trying to process the scene, while Abby gasped dramatically like he was watching a K-drama unfold in real time.

You immediately tried to stand but Baby was still leaning on you, totally unbothered.

“This isn’t what it looks like,” you blurted.

“Really?” Jinu crossed his arms. “Because it looks like our manager is cuddling our rapper during working hours in their private apartment base that we’re definitely not supposed to treat like a dorm.”

Baby yawned lazily, "Why are you acting like I don’t cuddle with you all the time?”

“That’s different!” Jinu snapped. “You’re annoying when you do it to me. This looks like... like, romantic tension!”

Abby squealed.

“I’m going to pretend I didn’t hear that,” you muttered, finally shoving Baby off of you. He made a small “oomph” as he fell sideways onto the bed, entirely unfazed.

Mystery tilted his head, “Wait… were we interrupting something important?”

“YES,” Baby and Jinu said at the same time, but with completely opposite tones.

You ran your hands down your face. “God, no. He was just… being Baby.”

“Which is suspicious by default,” Jinu added under his breath.

You ignored him and stood, brushing off invisible lint from your shirt. “Why are you all here anyway? Don’t tell me you broke the stove again—”

“We were wondering when the next rehearsal was,” Abby chirped. “But I guess some people were busy.”

“I wasn’t busy,” you hissed. “I was managing.”

“Managing what? Your love life?” Jinu teased.

Baby sat up and smirked. “So you do think it looks like a love life.”

“Can everyone shut up,” you snapped.

Jinu broke into a grin, “So does this mean Baby’s your favorite now?”

“He’s not even in the top five,” you shot back.

“There’s five of us,” Mystery whispered.

“Exactly.”

Baby looked wounded, “Betrayal..."

“Oh my God, get out of my room!”

Laughing and dramatically fake-crying, the boys stumbled back out, leaving you to slam the door behind them.

You stared at it for a long second, heart pounding. It wasn’t like you meant to let Baby get close. It just… happened. And worse, you didn’t hate it.

You let out a long, dramatic sigh, thinking finally you’d get your peace back, you were wrong, again. The door burst open for the second time.

“Can you guys knock for once in your life—” You started, already gearing up for a well-deserved rant, but Jinu was faster. He rushed in and clamped a hand over your mouth.

“Wait, wait, I forgot to tell you something important!”

You shoved his hand off your face, “What now?”

“So, remember when we told our fans to join us for a little fan event? Y’know… to play games together?”

You raised an eyebrow. “And?”

“Well… it’s today.”

You blinked slowly. “Today as in—now?”

Jinu gave you a sheepish nod. “Yeah, right now, so we kinda need to go.”

You groaned and waved him off. “Then go? Hurry up and get ready.”

He didn’t move, instead, he pointed directly at you.

“You have to come too.”

Your arms crossed your chest instantly, full defense mode. “WHAT? No, absolutely not. I am not going, no one can know I’m your manager!”

Jinu only smiled, “There’s going to be HUNTR/X there."

You took a deep breath, as if weighing a life-or-death decision. Then you clapped your hands together once, “Alright! Everyone get ready quickly! We’re moving in five!”

Jinu grinned wide, already halfway out the door. “Knew that would work!”

You shook your head as you turned to your reflection in the mirror, already dreading but also kinda panicking in excitement about what came next. Time to crash a fan event.

Your poor little boyband was already seated on the modest stage set up for them. Despite their earlier efforts to shove you backstage, you had stood your ground and firmly refused. No way you were hiding behind curtains, you’d rather sit with the crowd, thank you very much.

The event kicked off with a ridiculous game: who can chug the most hot sauce? And you already knew who’d win. Of course, no one outlasts Baby in a battle of pain and food.

You were actually enjoying the event. The energy, the laughter, the weird games, everything felt strangely... endearing. For a moment, you almost forgot how broke your band was. Almost.

But something kept tugging at your mind. You leaned forward slightly, Jinu promised HUNTR/X would be here.

Where were they? Was that little gremlin lying to get you to come?

Then, as if on cue, Jinu’s voice echoed through the speakers with way too much excitement

“Then why say goodbye when we have extra of models coming up? Please welcome Huntrix!”

Your heart skipped, your eyes widened as the lights dimmed and suddenly a dramatic spotlight cut across the stage, revealing three figures.

HUNTRIX.

The crowd lost it. Screams filled the venue. Phones were already out. People were crying, shaking. You, meanwhile, were frozen in your seat.

“Bring out the slides!” Jinu barked.

...What?

Fans started chanting. And then, yes somehow, somehow, a colorful, oversized plastic slide was dragged out.

THE SLIDE. And HUNTR/X actually used it.

Dressed in leather. Sliding down. Screeching all the way. The sound of leather squeaking violently against plastic echoed across the venue like a war cry of fashion versus physics.

Jinu bowed deeply, “It was truly an honor to share the stage with you.”

“No, no, no,” HUNTRIX replied smoothly, bowing just as low. “The honor is ours.”

Saja boys bowed again. “No, ours.”

HUNTR/X followed, "Ours.”

You watched in disbelief as the two groups continued bowing at each other, again and again, until the stage was finally covered with a soft curtain signaling the end of the event.

You stared at the now-closed stage, your brain fried. What kind of fever dream of an event was this? But your confusion didn’t last long.

Because the moment you stood up, your instincts screamed something was off. You turned your head only to see your band members bolting off the stage.

Being chased by huntrix.

“OH MY GOD,” you groaned, leaping to your feet. “What kind of trouble have they gotten into now?!”

Without thinking, you dashed out of the crowd, weaving through people, ignoring fans asking if you were someone important.

You spotted them running like children who’d broken a window, heading straight toward—

“Is that... a hot spring?!”

You narrowed your eyes in horror, yes, it was.

You picked up your pace. “I swear if they start an all-out hot spring brawl with huntrix, I’m quitting this job and faking my own death—!"

You weren’t sure what you’d find when you caught up.

But one thing was clear: your chaotic boyband was about to drag you into yet another disaster.

You were gasping for air as you finally reached the entrance to the hot spring, sweat dripping down your temples. Without thinking, you shoved open the door—

WHAM!

Something—a shoe? a flaming towel??—nearly flew into your face. You screamed, barely dodging it, and your jaw dropped at the chaos that unfolded before your eyes.

Idols, real, famous idols were fighting actual demons. You blinked and then you rubbed your eyes.

Nope, still there. Zoe was literally stabbing a horned creature while Mira spun mid-air and sliced through a screeching demon like she was in a drama finale with insane VFX.

Until you saw him. Jinu arguing with Rumi, in the middle of an actual demon brawl.

“JINU!” you shouted, your voice cracking from disbelief and impending wrath. You started sprinting toward him, he was so grounded for this, but you didn’t make it more than two steps before something with claws lunged at you.

But then the thing dropped. Dead.

Mira stood in front of you, sword dripping, face pale and wide-eyed, “What are you doing here? It’s not safe! Get out!”

Your voice shook. “I—I’m looking for my boyband!”

Mira looked at you like you were the delusional one here, “Boyband—?”

“Mira, behind you!” Zoe shouted from across the steam-filled chaos.

Mira spun and slashed without hesitation, gutting another demon before it reached her.

“No time for that!” she barked, already running toward another threat. “Get out of here!”

You were still trying to process whether you were hallucinating when a very real demon tail smacked into a wall right next to your head.

Yeah, no, time to run.

You stumbled out of the hot spring, heart hammering, lungs on fire, hair sticking to your forehead, and screamed into the night air:

“THEY’RE SO DAMN TROUBLESOME I DIDN’T EVEN GET TO TALK TO MY IDOLS IN PEACE!”

You looked around frantically, realizing your five boyband idiots had vanished yet again.

You didn’t know if they were fighting, hiding, or accidentally having tea with some elder demon out back. But you were going to find them and yell at them loudly, possibly with a frying pan.

You wandered the streets like a lost soul, still seething as you searched for your wayward boyband. Every step was accompanied by a muttered complaint under your breath—until a familiar silhouette caught your eye.

Jinu? Thank god, one of them, at least.

You rushed toward him, only for him to flinch, like he was about to bolt. But you got to him first, grabbing his wrist before he could escape.

“Jinu! What are you doing out here alone? Where are the others?” you demanded, keeping a firm grip on his wrist.

He didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he stared at your hand, the one clutching his wrist. You quickly realized what you were doing and let go.

“Sorry, I didn’t mean to—”

“They’re safe, somewhere,” he said calmly.

“Somewhere? What does that even mean? You guys are always glued together, and now you're just… here? Alone? Tell me where they are—I may not be getting paid for this, but I’m still responsible for you guys.”

Your words came out sharper than intended, frustration boiling over. Jinu, however, simply laughed at your reaction.

“You really do care about us, huh?”

“Well—duh? I’m your manager, even without a contract. You’re the one who said I was, remember? Contract or not, I’m still stuck with you guys.”

He just looked at you. No, watched you, something in his gaze made your stomach twist.

“Can you not look at me like that?” you asked, voice faltering.

“…Can you touch me again?”

"What?”

“Touch me.”

“WHAT DO YOU MEAN ‘TOUCH YOU’?!”

“Just… touch me?” he repeated, almost like a plea.

“ARE YOU INSANE?! DID THAT WHOLE BOTTLE OF SPICY SAUCE FRY YOUR BRAIN?!”

But Jinu didn’t flinch at your outburst. Instead, he calmly reached for your hand and intertwined your fingers with his.

“I didn’t think it would actually work,” he murmured. “Baby really found the right person.”

Your heart skipped.

“What… what do you mean I’m the right person?” you whispered, trying to pull away but his grip only tightened.

Jinu didn’t answer, but something told you everything was about to get much, much weirder.

Jinu let go of your hand and took a step back, putting distance between you, “I have to go.”

“To where? Wait, answer me—where are the others?”

“We’ll come back to your apartment,” he said, too casually for your liking.

“No. No, you’re clearly hiding something from me.” You stepped forward, refusing to let him escape that easily. “Why has everything gone wrong since I met you guys? It’s like I’ve been cursed! I— I even saw demons! I don’t know if I was hallucinating or what, but—”

“You saw demons?” His voice shifted, sharper now, more alert.

“YES? And Huntrix killed them. I saw it all when they were chasing you! What’s going on? Do you guys have something to do with Huntrix?”

Jinu didn’t reply.

Instead, his eyes flickered anywhere but yours, over your shoulder, down to his shoes, to the sky, anywhere that wasn’t your gaze.

Your frustration peaked, “Say something! Don’t stand there like this is normal!”

“I’m sorry…” he finally said, voice barely above a whisper, “Maybe in another life, I’d be able to explain everything to you.”

He stepped closer and you instinctively took a step back.

“Another life? Why not now…?” you asked quietly.

“Because we can’t risk losing you.” His eyes finally met yours. “You’re the heart of our existence.”

The words made no sense, you opened your mouth to ask more but before you could, Jinu reached out and flicked your forehead, gently, almost like a joke.

A blinding warmth pulsed through your skull, darkness bloomed at the edges of your vision, and then—nothing. You were asleep before you could even fall.

Darkness.

That was all you could sense—an infinite, suffocating blackness swallowing every corner of your surroundings. You felt as if you were floating, untethered, as though gravity itself had abandoned you. Then, out of the silence, a voice emerged—deep and heavy, pressing itself against your ear like a whisper laced with iron.

“So you’re the one who made my followers forget their original purpose,” it said, low and venomous. “How troublesome.”

You tried to move, to pull away from the voice, but it only crept closer, curling around you like smoke. No matter how far you shifted, it stayed near—breathing down your neck.

“Listen carefully,” the voice growled, “if you keep interfering with my plan to consume every human soul, then I’ll start with you. You’ll be the first I devour. And then… them.”

Your heart dropped.

“You mean those five idiots? What do you even want with them?” you snapped, unable to see who—or what—was speaking, but your frustration outweighed your fear.

The voice hissed. “This is exactly why I detest people like you. So attached. So pitiful. Drenched in shame you can’t shake off, even after five timelines.”

You clenched your fists. “Yeah, well, I’ve heard weirder speeches from Jinu and Baby, and guess what? You sound just as crazy as the rest of them. So congratulations, you’re officially the sixth idiot in my life.”

There was a beat of silence. Then the voice laughed.

Not loud, just… slow. The kind of laughter that made your skin crawl.

“Gwi-ma,” it said at last. “Remember that name, my daughter.”

The darkness around you shifted—like a television screen cutting to black—and suddenly you couldn’t breathe. Invisible hands clawed at your throat, choking you, forcing the air from your lungs. You thrashed, helpless, until— you woke up, gasping, drenched in sweat. Your sheets tangled around your limbs, your chest rising and falling too fast to be normal. You were in your room.

It was just a dream, just a nightmare.

“Oh, you’re awake,” a voice said softly.

You turned your head and found Mystery standing beside your bed, holding out a glass of water.

"You were tossing like crazy," he added, stepping closer. "Thought you were gonna burn up from that fever."

Fever?

You stared at him, still breathing heavily, your throat ached, your hands trembled. Mystery knelt beside the bed, offering the glass. You didn't take it right away.

"Did I say anything while I was asleep?" you asked, voice barely above a whisper.

He tilted his head. "No... why?"

You glanced at your hand, no bruises, no marks around your neck. But the lingering weight of something unseen still pressed against your chest.

"No reason," you said finally, taking the water with shaking fingers. "Just... bad dreams."

“By the way, where are the others?” you asked, just to break the silence lingering between you and Mystery.

“In the living room, waiting for you to wake up. Why? Should I call them in?”

You barely opened your mouth to answer, but Mystery had already risen and headed toward the door.

“I didn’t even say yes…” you muttered with a sigh, dropping back against your pillows.

“Boss!!” Abby burst into the room dramatically, practically sliding across the floor before slumping against your side, his arm slung lazily over your shoulders. “I thought you were dead! I already started imagining the worst.”

“Say that again and I swear I’ll dump this water on you,” you threatened, raising the glass Mystery had given you.

Abby backed off instantly.

“You okay?” Romance asked, stepping in with a more reserved tone.

“Do I look okay to you?” you shot back, voice dripping with sarcasm.

“Snappy. That means she’s getting better,” Baby added with a small smirk.

“What’s that supposed to mean?” you snapped again.

Baby ignored your tone and walked up to you, scanning your face intently before gently placing his palm against your forehead.

“Still warm,” he murmured, frowning. “I didn’t think the aftermath would hit her this hard.”

You blinked. “What aftermath?”

“Of course it would,” Abby chimed in, flopping onto the arm of a nearby chair. “She’s human, remember? And he was watching us the whole time, saw everything. Even that one conversation between you two and Jinu.”

You sat up straighter. “Hold on—what are you talking about? And where the hell is Jinu? I need to talk to that little jerk. He just flicked me and left me unconscious?!”

You tried to push the blanket away and get up, but Mystery was already there, pressing a hand gently to your shoulder.

“You’re not getting out of bed until you’re fully recovered,” Romance added, arms crossed like he meant it.

You blinked at him.

“…It’s weird coming from you,” you muttered.

“Come on, I do care about you,” Romance said, half-joking, though something in his eyes looked serious. You narrowed your gaze at him, unconvinced.

“Uh-huh,” you muttered, then let out a heavy sigh. “So… what exactly did you guys do that made Huntrix chase you all the way to a hot spring full of demons? I’m being serious here. That wasn’t a dream. I saw them kill that demon. And you guys—” you turned your head toward each of them like a judge staring down her jury, “—what the hell were you doing?!”

The room fell into a tense silence. Baby looked down, Abby fiddled with the hem of his shirt, and Mystery stood still like a statue. Even Romance said nothing.

“Guys?” you snapped.

Romance finally broke the silence, “It’s… not entirely our fault.”

“Oh yeah?” you folded your arms. “Then whose fault is it? Mine?”

“Him.” Abby pointed upward—or maybe just toward the ceiling.

“Him? What do you mean him? Gwi-ma?” you asked sharply.

“You know?” Baby looked startled.

“He said it himself,” you replied quickly. “In the dream. I swear, I’m not making this up. He talked to me, said he was Gwi-ma, that he’d eat me first before the rest of you, because he hated me…?” You trailed off, your voice trembling. “Then he said I was his daughter.”

Romance immediately stood up from the couch. “We need to call Jinu.”

You blinked in disbelief, “What? Why? What does Jinu have to do with this?”

“Because he’s the one Gwi-ma entrusted with the task of harvesting human souls, those meant to be sacrificed for Gwi-ma,” Romance answered without hesitation.

You stared at him like he’d grown another head. “Are you spewing nonsense again?” you scoffed, half-joking.

“No, I’m serious.” His expression was deadly calm. “Keep her here, I’m getting Jinu.”

“Romance? Hey! I’m not done talking to you!” You pushed yourself up, but Abby and Baby quickly held your arms, gently forcing you back down, while Mystery moved to distract you with a glass of water and soft reassurances.

“Relax, Boss. Don’t stress yourself,” Abby muttered.

“Let’s not trigger another fainting spell, alright?” Baby added.

You tried to shake them off, threatening to hit them—either with your hands or, if needed, a pan. But they seemed immune to your threats. Left with no choice, you actually swung. And yes, Abby got hit.

“OU—!” he hissed, now firmly grabbing your arms again to hold you still.

“Ugh! Don’t crowd me like this, let me go!!” you snapped, struggling against their grip.

“Let her go,” came a sudden voice, you turned your head—Jinu. And beside him, Romance.

“Oh great, you showed up too,” you snapped at Jinu, not holding back. “Now I want you to explain every weird thing that’s been happening. No lies, no more tricks, just tell me the damn truth.”

Jinu hadn’t answered yet. Instead, he looked around the room, meeting everyone’s eyes one by one. “Are we really going to tell her everything?”

“Yes?” Romance said, arms crossed. “She literally heard Gwi-ma speak to her.”

“You talked to Gwi-ma?” Jinu’s gaze shifted to you now, disbelief in his voice.

“What even is your connection to Gwi-ma? Isn’t Gwi-ma just some old story or legend?”

Jinu shook his head slowly. “No, he’s real.”

Silence spread through the room like a chill draft.

“Let go of me,” you told Baby and Abby, who had still been holding you back. They released you without protest. You got up from the bed, stormed out of the room—and returned holding a pan.

You slammed it lightly against your palm. “Pick one: sit or kneel.”

“Uh, manager-nim, what are you trying to say…?” Abby asked nervously, eyes fixed on the pan.

“Nothing. Just pick one. Sit. Or. Kneel.”

They all froze, unsure whether to take you seriously or not.

Romance raised his hands. “Okay okay, no need for violence. I’ll sit.”

Baby clicked his tongue. “She’s serious. Don’t test her when she has cookware in her hands.”

“I’m serious because I need answers,” you snapped. “No more cryptic half-truths. I don’t care if I’m ‘just human’ or whatever—you dragged me into this mess, and now I’m part of it whether you like it or not. So someone start talking.”

Jinu exhaled slowly and sat down, legs crossed, eyes unreadable. “Fine, you want the truth?”

You nodded, gripping the handle of your pan tightly.

“Gwi-ma is… the one we made a deal with. Not all of us knew at first. But eventually, we all accepted it.”

“What kind of deal?” you asked. “And why the hell would you ever deal with something like that?”

“We were dying,” Romance said quietly. “Desperate for something—anything. And we made a deal with him.”

“He offered us a better life,” Baby added. “In exchange for his help… a pattern slowly appeared on our bodies. It won’t fade, no matter what we do.”

“That pattern reflects our shame,” Mystery continued, voice low. “The voice we keep hearing—it’s regret. It doesn’t stop. And now… we are his demons. We have to offer him human souls as payment.”

You stared at them in disbelief, your mind spinning. The old folktales your grandmother used to tell you, they were real.

“So… you’ve been demons all this time?” you asked, your voice trembling.

One by one, they nodded.

You clenched your fists, frustration bubbling in your chest. "He said I was his daughter."

Jinu turned sharply to look at you. "Wait—what? We never knew anything about this."

"NEITHER DID I!" you snapped, voice cracking. “You think I knew anything?! All of this just hit me like a bomb, okay? Out of nowhere! One second I was normal, and the next—what? You’re all demons, and I’m suddenly his child? A demon’s child?! No, that’s not possible!”

You shoved up your sleeves and turned your arms over. “If I were his child, I’d have those stupid patterns too, right? But look—nothing! There’s nothing!”

Silence, the room felt like it was holding its breath.

Then Baby stepped forward, carefully, as if afraid you’d lash out again. “Not all patterns are visible,” he said softly. “Some of them… don’t show up unless he wants them to.”

You scoffed. “Great, even my skin is a lie now.”

Mystery looked uneasy. “Do you remember anything strange from your childhood? Nightmares? Blackouts? Maybe seeing someone watching you?”

You hesitated. A memory tried to claw its way up—but you shook it off. “I don’t know, I always thought I was just paranoid or tired. It’s not like I had the easiest childhood.”

Romance paced the room, rubbing his forehead. “If Gwi-ma said that… then it changes everything. He’s never taken an interest in anyone before. Ever.”

“And he talked to her,” Jinu said, more to himself than anyone. “Directly.”

You dropped your head into your hands. “Can I please just wake up now? I’m done, I’m done with this shit."

“I don’t think he’ll let you walk away,” Abby murmured. “If he called you his daughter, then maybe… maybe he thinks you’ll replace us.”

You were just about to ask Abby what he meant when a sudden notification lit up your phone screen.

"Wait, guys— HUNTRIX IS HOLDING A FAN EVENT TOMORROW!”

Your five boys stared at you in confusion as your expression shifted from confusion to pure delight in a split second.

“Okay, let’s just end this conversation right here,” you said quickly, brushing your hair back. “I just woke up from a nightmare, and maybe it messed with my brain a little, alright? You guys aren’t demons—look at you. You’re perfectly normal.”

“But Manager—” Jinu tried to interject.

“Shhh! I’ve been waiting so long for this Huntrix fan event. Don’t ruin it for me.”

The boys exchanged uneasy glances, unsure how to respond. Romance leaned in and whispered to Jinu, “We have to be at that fan event tomorrow, let's head out now.”

“But what about her? She already knows everything, but she’s still in denial.”

“I’m in denial because this entire thing is insane, Jinu,” you snapped, placing your hands on your hips.

Jinu raised both palms in surrender. “Okay, okay… at least you look better now. More like your usual, angry self.”

“EXCUSE ME?”

“No! I didn’t mean it like that—I meant your beautiful usual self?”

You narrowed your eyes at him with suspicion. He cleared his throat.

“Right, Boss, no offense… but, uh, can we borrow your sleeping bag?”

“For what?”

“Camping!” Mystery answered a bit too eagerly. “Yeah, camping.”

“Today? Seriously? Are you guys insane?”

“Please, just lend it to us?” Jinu pleaded. But his begging clearly had no effect on you, so he turned to Baby, signaling him to step in.

“I’m not going with you guys,” Baby replied lazily, flopping back onto the couch.

“Exactly, Baby. Don’t go with them,” you agreed with a firm nod.

“BABY?!” the rest of the group exclaimed in unison, as if he’d just betrayed the entire boyband.

What you'll need:

Photoshop (I use Photoshop 2023)

Basic knowledge on how to make gifs

Camera Raw filter installed

Okay so, first of all, I use two different methods depending on the size of the gif. Let's start with the one I use for most of my gifsets which are big gifs (examples: x x x x.)

METHOD #1: Smart Sharpen + Camera Raw

I started using the Camera Raw filter last year and let me tell you, I'm obsessed! It completely changes the game of sharpening. I use this method for all gifs with a 540px width.

We're going to work on timeline so get your gif ready and convert it for smart filters. I'm using this scene from my last set as a base:

Here's the gif after I color it (I usually sharpen my gifs before I color them but for the sake of the tutorial I'm showing you this so you guys can see the difference):

(1) Smart Sharpen Layer: Let's start by adding a Smart Sharpen layer (Filter > Sharpen > Smart Sharpen) with these settings:

Disclaimer: I didn't come up with these settings myself I got them from these sharpening actions forever ago so I don't know which one it is :/. I also wasn't able to find that person's new blog (if they even have one since they've been inactive since 2021) so if anyone knows please let me know and I'll give them proper credit! These actions were made by @shane-west!

Now we're going to go to the 'Layers' panel and click on this little thingy:

This window will pop up and we are going to change the Opacity to 50%.

(2) Camera Raw Filter: Here's where the fun begins. Go to Filter and click on Camera Raw Filter (you'll need to have the plugin installed for it to show up.) I don't know how the Camera Raw window will look like the first time you open it but good thing you only need to change a couple of things!

If it isn't opened yet click on 'Effects' and we're going to change the Texture and Clarity:

Depending on the scene/show/film I'm giffing, or if I want a stronger or softer sharpening, I'll use two different settings, but 99% of the time they are these:

First setting: Texture (+20) Clarity (+10)

Second setting: Texture (+40) Clarity (+20)

As you can see the difference isn't huge but the first setting gives a "softer" look. As I said I'll use one or the other depending on how I see the scene (it's almost always about the vibes yk.)

Feel free to experiment with these two and see what works best for you (although I wouldn't go higher than 40 on texture because the sharpening will look too fake imo.)

Also this filter is soooo good at making low quality videos look 1080p! Every time I've had to use 720p videos the Camera Raw filter has saved me 🫡

METHOD #2: Smart Sharpen

I use this method for smaller gifs. For example, 8 gifs of 268px x 180px sets (like these) or small-ish gifs in complex sets (like the second gifs in this set.)

This process is much simpler since it's the one I explained before but without adding the Camera Raw filter. That's it that's the method. Just a Smart Sharpen layer with the Opacity turned down to 50%.

As I said this method looks best on smaller gifs but to be honest it looks good on big gifs too? Depends on what you like most!

COLORING + SHARPENING TUTORIAL

someone asked for a coloring tutorial and my sharpening settings, so here it is! there are also a few tips to achieve more HQ gifs. :)

FOR HIGH-QUALITY GIFS

FILE SIZES

it doesn’t matter what your sharpening settings are if the file you’re using to gif is too low quality, so i tend to look for the best that i can get when downloading stuff. 

usually, movies (+2h) look better if they’re 5GB or more, while an episode (40 min/1h) can look good with even 1GB. the minimum definition i try to find is 1080p, but i gif with 2160p (4k) when available. unfortunately, not every computer can handle 4k, but don’t worry, you can gif with 1080p files just fine if they are big enough. contrary to popular belief, size does matter! which means sometimes a bigger 1080p file is better than a smaller 2160p one, for example.

SCREENCAPPING METHOD

this can too influence the quality of your gifs. as a gifmaker, i’ve tried it all: video frames to layers, directly opening video clips, loading files into stack, and i’ve finally settled down with opening screencaps as an image sequence. with bigger files, it doesn’t matter much what technique you use, but i’ve noticed with smaller files you can do wonders if you screencap (either by loading files into stack or opening as an image sequence) instead of using video clips. for example, this gif’s original video file was only 4GB (so smaller than i’ve usually go for), if you can believe it!

here’s a tutorial for setting up and screencapping with MPV, the media player i use to screencap. again, you can keep using video clips for bigger files, but you’ll find this useful when dealing with dire causes. i don't file loads into stack, though, like the video does. i open as an image sequence (open > screencap folder > select any image > click the image sequence button). just select OK for the speed. this will open your screencaps as a video clip (blue bar) in timeline mode (i'm a timeline gifmaker, i don't know about you). you will need this action pack to convert the clip into frames if you're a frames gifmaker. i suggest you convert them into frames even if you're a timeline gifmaker, just convert them into a timeline again at the end. that way you can delete the screencaps right away, otherwise you will delete the screencaps and get a static image as a "gif".

ATTENTION if you’re a Mac Sonoma user, MPV won’t be an option for you unless you downgrade your system. that is, if you have an Intel chip. if you have M1 Max chip (or even a better one), here’s a fix for MPV you can try while keeping that MacOS, because nowadays MPV is skipping frames in its latest build. or you can use MPlayer instead for less hassle. here are two tutorials for setting and using MPlayer. Windows users are fine, you can use MPV without trouble.

FOR EVEN MORE QUALITY

ADD NOISE

here’s a tutorial for adding noise as a way to achieve more HQ gifs if your original material is too low quality.

REDUCE NOISE WITH CAMERA RAW

instead of adding noise, you can reduce it, especially if your gif is very noisy as it is. 

the path is filter > camera raw > detail > nose reduction. i do this before sharpening, but only my video file isn't great to begin with. because it’s a smart filter, you can reduce or increase its opacity by clicking the bars next to its name in the layers panel.

TOPAZ AI

i use Topaz Photo AI to increase the quality of my screencaps when i need to. it’s paid software, but there are… ways to find it for free, usually on t0rrent websites. if someone’s interested, i can make a tutorial solely about it in the future.

SHARPENING SETTINGS

here are my sharpening settings (filter > sharpen > smart sharpen). i sharpen things twice: 500% 0.4px + 10% 10px. here's an action for it, for more convenience. here's a tutorial on how to use Photoshop actions. for animated stuff, i use this action pack.

COLORING

here’s the gif i'm gonna use as a base. it’s already sharpened like the way i always do it.

LIGHTNING THE SHOTS

half of the secret of a good coloring is good lightning. i always useCurves (layers > new adjustment layer > curves) and Brightness & Contrast (layers > new adjustment layer > brightness & contrast). the settings depend on the scene you’re giffing, but i always try make my gifs bright and with high contrast to make the colors pop.

CURVES

besides lighting your scene, the Curves adjustment layer has four automatic options that will color-correct it for you. it’s not always perfect and it doesn’t mean you won’t need to do further coloring, but it’s a great start. it’s a lifesaver for most ridiculously yellow scenes. look at the difference! this gif uses the 3rd automatic option (the screenshot below isn't mine btw so that's why the fourth option is the chosen one), from top to bottom. what automatic option you need to choose depends on the gif.

sometimes i like to tweak my Curves layer. not everybody does that, it’s not that necessary and if you’re not careful, it can screw your gif up. to modify your layer by hand, you will need to click and drag points of that straight line in the position you desire. this is the concept behind it:

basically, the lower part of the line handles the shadows, while the upper part handles the highlights of the image. if you pull a highlight point up, the image’s highlights will be brighter. if you pull it down, it will make them darker. same thing for the shadow points. you should play with it to get a grasp of it, that’s what i did when i first started giffing.

BRIGHTNESS & CONTRAST

then i added a bit of brightness and contrast.

CHANNEL MIXER

the scene looked a bit too yellow, so i used the Channel Mixer (layer > new adjustment layer > channel mixer) adjustment layer. here’s a tutorial of how it works. not every scene needs the Channel Mixer layer though, i mostly use it to remove heavy overall tints. in this particular case, the Curves layer got rid of most of the yellow, but i wanted the gif to be just a bit more blue so the Channel Mixer tweaks are very minimal.

SELECTIVE COLOR

now, this adjustment layer i always use: Selective Color (layer > new adjustment layer > selective color). this is THE adjustment layer to me, alongside the Curves one. this is how it works:

ie, you can separately edit a color this way, giving it tints. for this gif, i wanted to make the colors more vibrant. to achieve that, i edited the selected colors this way:

for the reds, i added even more red in them by moving the first slider to the right, making the color more vibrant. for his hat to have a more warm tint, i added yellow to the reds (third slider, moving it to the right). finally, to make the reds stronger, i moved the last slider to the right (more black).

for the yellows, i made them brighter by adding white to them, thus making the tile wall and Paddington more bright as well.

for the cyans and the blues, i just added the maximum (+100) of black that i could.

i wanted for Paddington's nose to be brighter, so i added more white to the whites.

lastly, i added depth to the blacks by increasing their own blackness.

you should always play with the Selective Colors sliders for a bit, before deciding what you want or need. with time, you will automatically know what to change to correct the color grading. it all takes practice!

HUE/SATURATION

i don’t know if you noticed, but there are some green spots on the blue wall behind Paddington. to correct that, i added a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer (layer > new adjustment layer > hue/saturation) and made the saturation of the greens 0%, making that unwanted green disappear from the background.

while the green spots on the wall are specific for this gif, i use hue/saturation a lot to tweak, well, hue and saturation. sometimes someone’s skin is too yellow, i made it redder by tweaking the reds and the yellows, or vice-versa. the hue bar follows the rainbow bar, so the maximum settings (+100 and -100) give the selected color to change its hue to something more red or pink (the rainbow extremities). changing hue can give pretty whacky results, like turning someone’s skin tone to green, so you will need to play with it to get the hang of it. you can also tweak the opacity of your hue/saturation layer to further improve your gif’s coloring. i didn’t do it in this case, the opacity is still 100%. the reds and the blues had their saturation increased to make them pop just a bit more, without affecting the other colors.

COLOR BALANCE

the highlights of the gif still had a green tint to it due to the automatic correction of the Curves layer, so i used Color Balance. this is how it works: instead of giving specific colors some tints, you can give them to the shadows, highlights, and mid-tones. if your shadows are too blue, you counterbalance them with the opposite color, yellow. same thing with the cyan-red and magenta-green pairings. in my case, i added a bit of magenta.

B&W GRADIENT MAP

now, if this gif was a dish, it’s time for the salt and pepper. i always add a Gradient Map (layer > new adjustment layer > gradient map) (black to white gradient) with the Soft Light blending mode, thus giving my shadows more depth without messing with the mid-tones and highlights. it also doesn’t “deep fry” (you know those memes?) the gif too much by adding even more contrast. usually, the opacity of the layer is between 30% to 70%, it all depends on the gif. it always does wonders, though!

COLOR FILTER

finally, i like to add Color Filters (layer > new adjustment layer > color filter) to my gifs. it’s very handy when giving different scenes for the same minimalistic set because it makes them kind of match despite having completely different colors. in this gif’s case, i added a “deep blue” filter, opacity 50% density 25. you can change the density and the opacity of the layer for further editing, again, it all depends on the gif.

VIBRANCE

if i feel like it, i add a vibrance layer (layer > new adjustment layer > vibrance) to make the colors pop. this can ruin your coloring sometimes, especially when regarding skin color, so be careful. i didn't do it in this gif because i felt i didn't need it.

AN OTHER EXAMPLE

the color grading of the original scene it’s pretty good as it is, to be honest. let’s see a worse scenario, a VERY yellow one:

no channel mixer this time because the automatic curves option dealt with the yellowness, but you can see it made the gif too green. i needed to correct that with the following adjustment layers:

curves (automatic option) (gif 2) >> same curves layer (tweaks) (gif 3) >> brightness & contrast (gif 4) >> hue/saturation (tweaked cyan+blue+green) >> selective color >> color balance (gif 5) >> b&w gradient map >> (sepia) filter >> vibrance (gif 6)

i added a hue/saturation layer to remove the blues & greens before my selective color layer because i thought that was more urgent than tweaking the tint of all colors. color balance (gif 4) was the real hero here, though, by removing the green tint. the selective color layer was meant to make the red pop more than anything else, because the rest looked pretty good, especially her skin tone (despite the green tint). you can notice that tweaking the curves layer (small gif 3) also helped A LOT with the green problem.

here's a list of my go-to's while coloring and lightning gifs. it's not a rule, just a guide. there are gifs in which i don't use all these adjustment layers, or use them in a different order. it all depends!

i'll suggest that you study each adjustment layer listed for more info, either with other Tumblr tutorials or YouTube ones. the YouTube ones focus on images, but you can translate what they teach to gif making very easily. you can ask me to further explain any adjustment layer, too! i was brief to keep this short (which i kinda failed lol).

”We don’t have a fire,” You rolled your eyes, “Unfortunately, we have modern technology, and we don’t exactly have the means to heat this over an actual fire. Moving on, add to it some rennet. Do you know what we’re making yet, Harry?”

”Thought it was cheesecake,” He grumbled, adding the rennet into the mixture, “It’s the only reason I agreed to help out.”

”That’s not the right attitude,” You complained, bumping your shoulder against his while you stirred the milk mixture. “Here, since you’re being such a downer, you can go make these macaroons by yourself.”

”No!” He whined, grabbing onto your arm, “You know I suck at making those! They’re so hard!”

”That’s what she said. Anyways, moving on,” You joked, not letting Harry make a comment further, “can you start whipping this with your arms for me, please?” You asked as you pushed the bowl of egg whites towards Harry.

”Don’t you have a mixer for this?” He spoke up but still took the whisk and began mixing. “I think that would be easier.”

”I do, but this recipe was made like 97 years before the electric mixer was invented,” You explained, moving on to the other step. “While he whips that to a froth, I’m going to grind these almonds and sugar together.”

”It’s not the only thing I’ll be whipping to a froth tonight,” Harry muttered directly into his microphone.

”I hope you know this is a family-friendly show, Mr.,” you side-eyed him. “Anyways, by the time these are all cooked, our milk should be solidified, and we should have cheese!”

”That’s what we were making?” Harry gasped in shock as he watched you mix the egg whites and the almond-sugar powder.

”What did you think it was?” You asked, genuinely curious.

“Fuckin cheesecake!” Harry shouted, walking off camera. 

“No, you need cheese to make cheesecake, dummy,” You laughed, pouring the now curdled milk through a cheesecloth. “Now, in an hour or so, we get to break down the cheese and macaroons into fine bits. I’ll leave this one to you.”

”Oh, yay, thanks,” Harry said sarcastically. By the time you moved to the next few steps, you were ready to make puff pastry. Only it didn’t sound like making puff pastry. “What the fuck is this?”

”It’s a very concise way of describing puff pastry,” You chuckled lightly. “Thank god I already know how to make puff pastry, or this video would not be posted.”

”Can I put it in the dish?” Harry asked, watching you pull out the completed puff pastry and rolled it out to the correct length.

”Yeah, just make sure there are no air bubbles or holes,” You explained as you helped him take the thin dough to lay it in the dish. “When you trim it, cut it so there’s a little over the edge so it can puff up. The sides and the bottoms obviously won't be able to puff up.”

“Oh please, I’m not an amateur,” He scoffed, immediately accidentally cutting a line through the side of the dough. “Shit.”

”And this is why I’m the baker,” You lectured, bumping him out of the way with your hip. “Now, we’re going to add the filling and put this in the oven. It’s a pretty basic cheesecake, so you could add chocolate or something to match your preference. I decided to drag Harry to a berry patch to pick our own berries as they would 200 years ago, so we could have the full 200-year-old cheesecake experience.”

”I may or may not have eaten a lot of those,” Harry admitted.

”I can’t have anything with this guy,” You joked, throwing your head back. “Anyway, wash up whatever fruit you have left and pile it on top of the cooled cheesecake! Harry will do the honors of trying this.”

”It’s really dry,” He said right after he took a bite.

”It is on the dryer side, so make sure you have some whipped cream or something to balance it out, but it’s definitely not your average New York Cheesecake. It tastes more like a ricotta cheesecake to me. I like it, but it definitely needs whipped cream or something,” You explained before setting your fork down and addressing your audience. “Make it a great week, everybody, and I’ll see you again next week.”

Your normal outro began playing, but just when everyone thought the video would end, there was an end scene of your outtakes with Harry. 

“My arm is killing me,” Harry groaned as he stopped whisking the egg whites for a second, looking over at you rolling and folding the puff pastry.

”Your arm hurts?” You replied in a condescending tone. “ I would kill to have one arm hurt! I’m hurting my entire upper body for this!”

“We can swap if that’ll make you feel better?” Harry offered, leaning the whisk against the side of the bowl to move behind you and wrap his arms around your waist. “We can also take a break.”

”No, the egg whites can’t be left for too long, and if I chill the pastry for too long, it will be even harder to roll out,” You sighed, leaning back into his hold and looking up at him. “Thanks, though. Let’s just push through it.”

”Okay,” Harry exhaled before dropping a kiss to your forehead and going back to the bowl. Just as he restarted whisking, he offered, “If you want to take a break, I can do both of these for a few.”

“As much as I would love a break, I need to stick this out with you.”

A nightmare. Exactly what the city has come to as you mindlessly lag behind your giggling friends, too engrossed in the two-dimensional visual novel characters on their screens to even realise the lamp post stumped jarringly in the middle of the sidewalk.

It’s like a disaster waiting to happen when you realise they’re mere seconds away from colliding head on in to the steel pike, “Wait— Megan! Ella! There’s a– oh…”

With a shuddering slam and crack Megan’s ditzy state knocks her to her knees with a red bump centred laughably on her forehead, slumped in pain next to an even more..distressing phone.

“What the fuck?? Since when was that even- wha— my Sylus, no!!!” Names like Sylus that you’d only find in these over-the-top dating sims currently plague the city on every billboard you see. Stores hopped on to the trend the minute they could and before you knew it everyone and their moms were playing this stupid game!

“Megan you klutz! The screen’s all smashed, jesus..” Ella’s focused on checking the beyond fixable screen on one hand and calming down a panicked Megan on the other, who’s dramatically pulling at the pink streaks in her hair until they splintered and ripped in her hands.

Opening your mouth is the last thing you should be doing, at least not right now but your internal thoughts slip through anyway. “Well maybe if you weren’t so focused on some ugly game character you could’ve saved yourself a 100 dollar trip to the repairs.” You’re expecting a laugh from Ella to some degree but the both of them stare back, hard, and by her eyes it looks like Megan’s about to break down in to crocodile tears.

“Wrong time?” Sighing, you crouch down to Megan’s height as she aggressively taps on her glitched screen with literal screen glass embedding in to her finger pads, ouch... “Megs—“

“No!! What am I going to do I’m going to lose my tubatu sim streak!” Six months ago when the game was unheard of in its early phases you would’ve thought she was mourning a loved one and not some log-in based incentive for…Tubatu’s dating sim.

Out of all the things your friend could be worrying about right now it just has to be that snoozefest of a game and you’ve absolutely hated it since it turned half the world in to braindead zombies over some abs.

For no reason at all the pair of trouble start to tug on the sleeve of your shirt, pulling you forward in to a ‘group whisper’ session with your knees buckling each others’ uncomfortably.

“Pleasee~ pleasepleaseplease give it a chance y/n!” Megan chimes with her grip on your wrist becoming tighter in case you wanted to avoid the same old ‘play this dating sim with us’ talk you’ve been recurringly running away from over the last two months. No chance are you giving that game a sho-

—Ow! Scowling, your hand reaches to console the back of your head, soothing the tender burn left as an aftermath of a ‘violent’ slap and the agitating chuckle following shortly after.

“Miss me? Do you guys know how weird it is to be conspiring like this in the middle of the sidewalk?”

Upon recognising the same sing-song tune of his voice you scowl harder. Lifting your head up to meet his amused ones staring back at you with a playful smile swabbed on his face.

Soobin; he’s everyone who lives down the road’s son with how much he’s always running errands and abusing his good looks to get what he wants from middle aged aunties. And you? You’ve been constantly attached by an arm and leg to his side, it’s a well overused joke now among your circle that Soobin’s ‘lived more of your life than you have’ with how often you’re seen together.

“Woah! Just my luck—quick! No pants man convince her that Tubatu’s dating sim is fun!” Megan puts on a one-man show in bowing down and pleading Soobin, honestly you don’t know what’s gotten in to her since she started playing.

The male heartily laughs and swats at Megan to stop before onlookers misread the situation. “Your phone looks a mess, what happened to it?”

“That dating sim happened to it, that’s what.” Soobin’s finger comes to flick your forehead at your attitude. He’s always been keeping you in check knowing how horribly wrong you can be interpreted with your baseless words.

“Oh loosen up for once, I don’t think it’s that bad of a game, I mean if the whole country’s in love with it then surely it must be good—“

“I’m convinced all of this hype is a PR stunt.” Chewing on your nails you slowly lift yourself from your squatting position on the ground which only causes more problems when your head uppercuts Soobin’s chin at unexplainable force.

“The two of you really remind me of Zen and the main character you know- always bickering.” Ella’s comment doesn’t amuse you at all, because first of all, you hate being associated with that corny dating sim and second, you get shivers whenever someone brings up Soobin in a romantic view.

“Pfft, do you really hate the idea of being with me so much?” He must’ve picked up on your grossed-out expression.

“Anddd won’t you look at the time! Oh geez I need to head back like..right now!” You’re quick on your feet to swivel back ‘round to the crossing leading you back to your apartment before Megan and Ella could hassle you with the dating sim talk any further; the information overload turning your brain in to mush.

You don’t even know why your hand automatically wraps around Soobin’s as you dart for the crossing once it flashes blaring green, dragging him faster than his long legs could support.

“Don’t break her Soob! She hasn’t been fucked in months!” If Megan wasn’t right you would’ve strangled her purple to keep her quiet, but truth be told your usually fuck buddy Intak got a girlfriend which you can’t blame him for and you haven’t been laid since, so maybe you should take Ella’s advice and blow off some steam with the dating si-

Hissing repeatedly is the kettle in the shared kitchen, the noise leaking through your closed doors with how still and mundane your day is going.

Rolling on to your back you blink at the harsh light shining right at you, covers pulled up past your head as you kick and groan in frustration. You hate to admit it but with such an uneventful life this summer moving forward, you catch yourself scrolling to the app store and typing in the forbidden name. You mean, just trying it out to see what’s so ‘good’ about it doesn’t hurt anyone right?

Wrong! Because an hour in to the game and you’re hooked. Whatever drugs the game devs put in to the code it’s for sure working and you’re living evidence of it. Chapter after chapter you’re overthinking each option in order to get the most hearts as the game calls it, and in exchange for those hearts you get to dress up your character and unlock side stories. And for once in your life you feel like apologising to Megan for being so wrong about the game since you’re more than hooked, you’re addicted.

“What the— are you joking? How does saying thanks on a date lose me two hearts?!! Am I supposed to spit on him or someth—“

“I made dinner if you want so—“

“I’ll have it later Lily I’m busy !!!” A part of you feels sorry for the sweet girl who’s probably sat alone at the table right now scraping her fork along the plate, but a special quest popped up just in time for you to earn a couple more hearts if you wanted to purchase the hair you’ve been eyeing.

Hell, you even ignore Soobin’s phone call just to keep playing the game, your phone attached by a strewn and mangled charger as you complete half of the game’s content in one sitting. It’s only when you reach a slump after taking on an almost impossible quest where all of your choices worked out of your favour.

The stupid game resets your process to the very start of the chapter for the pettiest things, including choosing to have a different pasta shape to the love interests’ at a restaurant?! It’s absurd!!

A couple more attempts later and you’re completely drained of all energy to even bother clearing the chapter again, instead letting your eyes fuzz out the ambient lighting of your room until you succumbed to your own exhaustion.

‘Good morning user, welcome to the..’

You’re barely awake when you notice your alarm sounds different, like an internal monologue rather than the irritating concoction of ear bleeding melodies mixed in to one.

If your alarm wants to see tomorrow then it should learn to shut up the moment you start groaning and taping a pillow to the other side of your ear to sound it out. Except it doesn’t at all.

Sitting straight up in a dazed state you suddenly feel pain in your shoulders which irks you to groan and stretch and what the fuck?!!!—

Two pink pixelated buttons floated (??) in the air in front of you?! Marked with a letter icon and an exclamation mark you believe you’ve lost your mind or stuck in a fever dream as you shuffle back to the wall of your bed.

Take a quick breath for a second because nothing’s making sense— particularly the floating buttons that defy the laws of nature in your very own room right now?!! No matter how hardly you pinch at your skin and slap at your face you don’t magically return back to the logical earth, completely stuck in a trance of shock and confusion.

It’s when the monologue returns again that you understand the noise was anything but the alarm— some entity who’s decided to fucking mess with your head and create visions that made you feel insane.

“Welcome user, would you like to update your nickname?” Still rubbing your eyes as if they were going to make the situation any clearer your head pounds as the familiarity of the question toils through your memory.

Right under the bright pink pop-up flashed in front of you now are pink retro letters, boldly spelling out ‘Angel’ which essentially causes your heart to drop and run your blood cold.

Angel. The random pseudonym you chose for yourself upon downloading that dating sim game, a mere span of a moment kind of thing where you saw a pair of angel wings on the home screen and lazily typed it in thinking not much of it. Why on earth would this suddenly come to you in a dream? Or a hallucination of some sort— God who knows what you’ve done to yourself!!

‘Name change request expired. You cannot change your name later on.’ Oh come on..really? No shitty system warned you there was a time limit in changing your name.

Whatever..by the time you wake up the whole name change won’t matter a thing, so at least you thought as you shifted your legs towards the exclamation button in front of you.

‘Welcome to Tubatu’s Dating Sim ! A bug in the system has granted you an offer- 5 targets to nail down within 5 weeks and you’ll be on a mind-blowing transportation back to your world !! Every week you will receive a quest to achieve in order to boost the lovemeter above your head which is increased by heart points— you can earn heart points in the following ways: holding hands 5 points, a kiss 20 points, and the most efficient way of all..sex!! For a whopping 100 points. Once you’ve filled up your lovemeter the system will permit your return, however if you fail to conquer the hearts, and bodies, of the 5 love interests you’ll be stuck in this simulator forever :( Good luck user and have fun !’

Have fun? This the most bull shit you’ve heard ever since Soobin told you he knew how to kiss !! And if all of this turns out to be true, then 5 weeks or else you’re stuck here forever might kill you on the spot.

Actually, it’s far from the dating sim you’re used to. Despite all the controls and buttons being identical, you don’t recall fucking a love interest as one of the methods to receiving heart points?!!

Though before you can register the information overload in to a sensical situation a grand message pops up from thin air in front of you again in the same pink-pixelated letters.

Mission: break the ice !! Your co-worker seems to be in a bit of trouble with his shift, head down to help him out tonight in other ways than work in exchange for heart points <3 target: Kang Taehyun, hint: Stay until closing time.

If there’s anything you’d remember from playing the game in one sitting it would be that none of the love interests had the ordinary sounding names of people you know in real life?? What on earth happened to those extremely inconveniently spelt names? For starters, Taehyun’s your co worker!! How can you fuck him for these dumb heart points— he’s a whole brick wall to talk to..and if you’re being honest being fired for harassment doesn’t sound great right now because you’d probably report him to the manager if he suddenly asked to have sex ?!!

ive had this sitting in my drafts for ages, and they’ve really been starting to pmo now… sorry some of these are a bit self indulgent or niche, but i hope you like at least one or three ! may be my last around of hcs for these boys for awhile :)

dean does not watch sports and actually has no idea what’s going on anytime someone puts a game on. sam does though, college kids had nothing else to do but study, drink beer, and watch sports. he sometimes makes stuff up to fuck with dean

sam and dean still have charlie’s phone when she died. it’s on silent, and the boys (mostly dean) will text it sometimes whenever they miss her. most of the messages are apologies.

sam still visits jess’ grave on the anniversary of her death. he takes eileen once or twice too, because she asked.

sam doesn’t know how to cook for shit. anytime he wants to make something, he has to put on a step by step youtube tutorial video. he refuses to ask for deans help.

there’s a small amount of grace left over in the handprint on deans shoulder

whenever deans comfortable and feels safe, he can conk out anywhere. he’s fallen asleep at the table, in the middle of cooking, and has once or twice fallen asleep on sam and cas. sam was concerned at first, but now he has just accepted it and dean has designated nap times throughout the week.

sam is into wicca practise. he burns incense and sage and keeps crystals lying around the bunker, he’s slipped a few into the glove compartment of the impala

dean teases and complains, but he actually likes doing chores. it’s something that makes him feel “normal” and he likes using his hands and working.

cas and dean are soul-bound.

dean has read the bible through multiple times throughout his life (mostly at low points, and he’s had a lot,) to the point where he has memorized some passages. he’s not much for faith, but he has gone to church once or twice recently when jack became god

cas finds dean reciting passages of the bible exhilarating.

cas has multiple parenting books littered around the bunker that he sometimes flips through

sam hates cats and is strictly a dog person

cas’ eyes reflect in the dark, like how cats/most nocturnal animals do.

anytime he prays, all deans prayers go exclusively to cas without thinking. he actually prays more than he ever texts or calls cas, like it’s as easy as breathing. cas never mentions how intimate it really is for him to do this. he always listens to them

the air around cas changes whenever he’s in a room. it’s subtle, like the feeling you get when your hair stands on end, like you can tell that he’s not entirely human. normal people chalk it up to vibes or cas being intimidating or offputting. it’s not something he does on purpose

john has gotten physical, but dean has always been there to take the brunt of it. because sam was the favourite, and dean believed and wanted sammy to live some semblance of a normal life as best he could. everything dean has endured has always been for sammy.

sam has this complicated relation with killing where he’s fine hunting monsters, but refuses to kill animals. he remembers as a kid bobby took them out hunting once—actually hunting, not with monsters—and when told to shoot at a squirrel, he couldn’t do it. dean shot it instead and claimed sammy did it. this is also one of the reasons he’s moved to a more vegetarian/vegan lifestyle.

sam had an emo phase as a kid. he grew out of it, but not the music; he’ll go back to listen to some emo/punk songs when he’s in a good mood. dean bullies him ruthlessly when he hears it.

deans fight-or-flight kicks in whenever someone drums their fingers or hands on the table, it takes him back to when michael would bang on the doors in his mind. he is still learning to quietly asks people to stop

sam has built up a high pain tolerance from his time in the cage but has become hyper-aware and sensitive to the lightest touches, like someone touching his hair or breathing on the back of his neck.

anytime a spell component requires blood, dean will always do it unless it’s specific. he still considers himself a weapon or catalyst, and it’s been ingrained in him to always give and give and give himself for others.

when they were kids, dean used to steal formula and food for sam when they were younger and sam knows this. now, sam will almost always go out for groceries. it’s sort of his silent way of returning the favour for dean.

dean stays up late on purpose just to talk to cas, it’s really the only point in a day they get quality time together just talking. eventually though, dean falls asleep; cas is always there in the morning.

sam, dean, and cas all enjoy watching trashy reality television shows... dean and cas like watching say yes to the dress and they both always seem to have opposite reactions ("i think the bride looks lovely in that dress. why is the mother-in-law being so critical?" "seriously, cas? that dress looks like some old ladies curtain. no way in hell is she walking down the aisle in that.") and sam and dean really enjoy watching ghost hunters, just to make fun of them.

dean’s a neat freak when it comes to his own room, borderline ocd, and sam is organized but messy, a combination of cleanliness only an ex-college student could have.

cas can make his wings corporal, but everytime he does this it takes a lot of concentration, and it becomes a bit more difficult to put them back into the aether each time. it’s also considered vulnerable/intimate for an angel to do this, or sometimes even painful to constrain their true form to simple shapes.

deans love language is acts of service, cas’ is words of affirmation, and sams is quality time.

prayers have a sound to them. when either one of the boys pray to cas, they have their own distinct tone that cas has come to recognize. sam’s is high pitched, like a clinking of a glass; he found it annoying at first, but sam’s prayers mellowed out into something similar to wind chimes. deans is a low sound, strong and comforting, akin to tires rolling over gravel and pops like crackling fire at its strongest.

cas makes it a daily ritual for dean to ask for at least one thing everyday; because dean always gives, and never takes. it’s usually little things, where dean will go to make coffee for him and cas and will sometimes get stopped on his way to the coffeemaker, and cas will just shoot him a look. cas waits until dean asks him to make him a coffee. sometime’s dean gets more vulnerable and asks for affection or quality time watching movies; he’s learning that he can have these things.

dean and claire text often, and there’s been multiple occasions that deans stayed up late on the phone with claire helping her out on her own cases with lore, experience, or a pep talk. there has also been times where deans driven out to help her. he will always make time for her.

jody, donna, and the girls invite tfw up to jody’s house for dinners every month or two when they all have time.

sam is a nerd in the sense that he knows a random facts about everything, but dean is a nerd in the sense he knows movies and comics. and cas is a nerd in the sense that he knows everything… literally.

dean and sam know basic sign language and learned it through eileen. sam is pissed that dean picked it up faster than him.

Someone asked me a question earlier, but it wouldn’t let me respond to it so I’ll try my best to sum up some of the things they asked me. they asked me about my comic making process. I should be honest I’m almost a complete amateur. I wanna say I’m self-taught, but that’s not to take away from all of the YouTube videos and tutorials that I’ve watched online. Somehow I just ended up putting them together and into what I have now.

To start off with I almost always try to write my script first. after the script, what’s most important to me is the expressions on the characters faces. I think more than anything that gives me the best direction to my writing. As you can see with my first image, sometimes it can be as simple as just drawing stick figures this just gives me a directional idea of how my paneling’s gonna look. I’d say on average. I do up to three drafts the first draft direction. The second draft is a better idea of that direction and the third draft is all the cleanup so it’s ready for line art 

I usually separate my characters by specific color. This is so when I go into color, it’s easier to see which characters need what.

You can call me a bit of a cheater, but I like to use closed lines when I draw my characters. that way I can use a reference layer to just fill in the colors instead of having to do it manually or using my magic wand tool. 

I also utilize the pallets on Procreate to pick their colors

When it comes to shading, I like to use multiplayer layers and erase out the lighting. I might use some ambient lighting here and there with a dark pinkish purple this is going to depend on where your scene is taking place, but since mine is an alleyway, my multiplayer layer is at 40 opacity. For the characters, I usually use my syrup brush to blend in some of the less harsh shades. When it comes to my backgrounds, I like to use my glowing brush to erase out the lighting.

I still myself have a hard time drawing backgrounds I struggle to find where to put my characters in place some people find it easier to draw the background first and then the characters and although I do agree, that’s easier to establish the shot, I need focus on my characters. So what I usually do is draw my characters in a box and then draw that box in a space and that space becomes my background.

 I play around a lot with the Procreate effects that they have I use a pen called, burst for dramatic feelings, like a burst of energy or a burst of emotions I might use a comic dotted layer for something more comedic or action based. 

When it comes to brushes, I use a pencil for the sketch, a gloaming for the shading and syrup for the outline. Those are the main pens I use and everything else is effects. 

My organization isn’t always the best either, but this is how I usually do it. Panels and bubbles are at top, including the special effects like for example if I were to write the word ‘shake’ If Helga was shaking or blush, if Arnold was blushing, this would be in the bubble layer.  under that would be panels under that would be characters and in that folder I would have line art, then lighting and shading then color and that follows the same formula for background. 

This is a general breakdown of what I do in my comic, and I couldn’t say at all, but I hope it gives you an idea of what I do. again I’m no professional and you should take all my advice with a grain of salt. My best advice is learned by doing I think if you looked at my first chapter and saw my latest chapter, you’ll see my improvement and my paneling in my expressions in my establishing shots and in my color shading. So if you wanna make a comic, just make it and learn as you go, your first one isn’t gonna be a banger more than likely but it’ll be the best learning experience, in my opinion. Thanks a lot for your kind words ! I started sewing kind of out of the blue two years ago. I'd never had any sewing education, formal or otherwise, and I'd always found sewing too tantalizing to get into, but eventually my friend @surikane and I decided to give it a try together because we really wanted to make costumes to wear at our local big medieval festival. I got a Reconstructing History doublet pattern, youtube tutorials, and off I went.

I'm far from mastery and to be honest I just pick a project I really want to do and learn what I need to learn as I go along. It's maybe not the cleanest way to go but as a casual hobbyist driven by pure brainworms and impatience it works great for me. When it comes to historical costuming of course it does take some passion because usually looking at one source won't be enough and you'll need to peruse around. At first, my best combo was to get a printable pattern as a base, and then check out more precise books and videos/lectures on the side to help make sense of it and adapt what needed changing.

I really think anyone can get into sewing at any stage of their lives and make something wearable pretty much rightaway. With the ressources we have today, it's way more doable than it looks. And it really doesn't have to be perfect to spark a lot of joy ! I'm really proud of how far I got in just two years of sewing and I really encourage everyone to give it a try !

hi i was asked by @haumkwak for a gif coloring tutorial :)

some disclaimers

i don't actually know what i'm doing. all of my photoshop knowledge comes from the one (1 🤓☝️) semester i spent as an art major, clicking and sliding random things to see what happens, and two youtube tutorials i watched

this tutorial is mostly for live performance gifs. if i'm giffing mvs or other videos i use waaaayy less adjustments but the logic is pretty similar

i don't use all of the adjustments mentioned in the order i mentioned them, since it really depends on the source video. for this reason i'm not gonna color a single gif throughout the tutorial and instead i'm going to use gifs i colored before to show how i used the adjustment i'm talking about

this is my first time trying to write a tutorial and i suck at explaining things and writing concisely so this turned out to be basically word vomit. if anything doesn't make sense, there's a tl;dr at the end with some videos i recorded of myself coloring a couple gifs to hopefully make things clearer lol

1. color balancing

color balance and/or curves is usually a good place to start considering all the different colors stage lighting can have. i don't always do this first though, i may do it at a later step depending on the lighting. i also sometimes do multiple color balancing layers throughout my process if the colors are really strong

color balancing is also v helpful if a stage looks dull and grayish (usually m countdown and sometimes music bank look like this imo)

1a. color balance

pretty straight forward i think so i won't yap about this too much since you're just sliding the sliders to the opposite of whatever color you're trying to get rid of. but here's an example of how i use color balance to make a gif look less dull/gray. it's kinda subtle but it makes the shadows in the face and skin overall a bit brighter & warmer:

1b. curves

i don't usually use curves by itself for color balancing unless i'm only doing some very light balancing in the hair/shadows. i'll usually just use the black eyedropper tool to select the blackest point in the hair (or clothes... whatever's darker). sometimes i'll use the white eyedropper and set the white point instead, it depends on what looks better.

if i'm using curves to make a gif appear less dull/gray, i'll start off with the red curve and click on the finger tool thing that's above the eye droppers and then adjust the curve by clicking directly on which spots i want to add red to (usually the shadows in the face), then do the same with the green & blue curves to balance if needed.

1c. camera raw filter's color/white balance

if the stage lighting is just way too strong and i'm having a hard time with color balance and curves, i'll open up camera raw to see if i can get a better base to work with

i basically just select the eyedropper tool that's next to the white balance under the "color" menu and click on what should be the whitest point, adjust the sliders if needed, then convert back to frames and continue coloring with the regular adjustment layers.

i included a comparison of using white balance in camera raw vs setting the white point in curves just for funsies to show the difference between the two. in both, i set the white point on the center of the same spike of chaewon's top and i feel like camera raw does a better job at neutralizing

2. fill layer

ok next if the skin looks super pale & washed out i'll use a fill layer (layer > new fill layer > solid color...) and set it to either multiply, hue or saturation at about 20 - 35% opacity and pick a pink, peachy, brownish or orangey color depending on what looks best

i'll go through all three of the blending modes and pick whichever looks best but in general:

multiply: i think this one is the most effective at giving skin some color but i don't always like how it looks, especially if there's a lot of whites and light colors in the clothes and background since it'll color them too

hue: makes colors more toned down and similar, and can make the skin stand out a bit more in comparison, so it works best if the skin isn't too washed out. if i'm having a hard time removing unwanted colors from the skin during color balancing this can also help with that

saturation: the setting i usually go for just bc it looks cooler lol. it can bring out a lot of different colors, especially in the hair, which i think is pretty neat. i also just think that it looks nicer than if you were to use hue/saturation or vibrance/saturation sliders

and just for funsies... here's a comparison of the final coloring on yeonjun but with the fill layer set to different blending modes:

they all look pretty good, hue & saturation would just need more adjustments to get the skin looking like it does with the multiply option, but i feel like multiply just gives off a nicer vibe overall

3. lighting

3a. curves

i do the same thing that i said i do in 1b, where i use the finger tool to adjust the curve by clicking directly on the spots i want to adjust rather than using the actual curve itself.

i'll start by clicking on a dark spot in the hair and dragging it down to make it darker, then clicking somewhere on the background and dragging up to make the image overall brighter. then i'll mess around in the face and drag up and down depending on what makes the skin look bright but doesn't wash it out even more. i do this on the RBG curve.

if i skipped using a color fill layer or using curves for color balancing earlier (or if i just think the skin still needs more color), i'll adjust the other curves too depending on what colors i think it needs

3b. levels

i mainly use levels for minor adjustments or fine-tuning what i did with curves, but i'll use it as my "main" adjustment layer for lighting if the original lighting isn't too bad

3c. brightness/contrast

i don't use this adjustment much but if i do, i'll also use it more for fine tuning whatever i did with curves and/or levels

3d. exposure

i rarely use exposure since i feel like it's easy to go overboard with it so i'm not sure how to explain when i decide to use it and how lol. i think i mostly use it if a clip is pretty dark & gray looking or for fine tuning if i want to intensify how black any dark colors are.

4. hue/saturation and selective color my beloveds!!!!!

4a. hue/saturation

i prefer to adjust the saturation with this layer rather using the vibrance & saturation sliders so that i can choose how saturated each color is individually

the colors i mess with most are the reds and yellows to color skin, and i adjust the sliders based on what makes the skin look more vibrant. i'll adjust other colors too, depending on what colors are in the background and/or clothes

i almost always do a second & maybe third hue/sat layer and adjust the range of reds selected so that only the lips and/or blush are selected. then, i adjust the sliders so they can either stand out more, or if the blush is too bright or making the face look too red, i'll adjust them so that it matches the skin more.

4b. selective color

the colors i adjust the most with this adjustment are white, black, neutral and sometimes red & yellow, depending on how much adjusting the skin still needs at this point. i really only increase the blacks for all colors but if i feel a certain color needs more balancing i'll add other colors too (ex: if the blacks are still too blue/purple from lighting or just look kinda faded i'll increase yellow, if the skin still looks very dull i'll increase yellow & magenta and decrease cyan in the whites and/or reds and yellows)

depending on the colors in the clothes & background i may mess around with the other colors too depending on what i'm trying to do

**: i also adjusted the cyans + blues in this layer to make the background darker but didn't include the settings for that since my main focus in this step was the skin

5. camera raw

i don't use camera raw a lot but if i'm having a hard time coloring a gif using the adjustments above or if i think a clip would be a good candidate for the type of coloring i was talking about with anon here, i'll open up camera raw

i don't save my camera raw colorings for very long so i can't show any before/afters but my general process is:

light: increase exposure, contrast, highlights & whites, decrease shadows & blacks

curve: sometimes i adjust it, but not always

color grading: set highlights & midtones to something orangey, set shadows to something blue or more neutral or just leave them alone, depends on the clip. then mess with the sliders below each color wheel and the blending & balance sliders

mess around with the color mixer & calibration sliders until i get what i'm going for

do some further adjusting with the regular adjustment layers once i've converted back to frames

So his human is perched on his shoulder, ever vigilantly watching over him (watching cat videos but shhhh) and those itsy, bitsy red bottoms are just. There! Resting against him so casually! He's distracted yes, but not distracted *enough*

His human is innocently crossing and uncrossing their legs. Starscream's fans click on but nobody says anything, not while Buckethead (laub u megsy) over there is talking. At this point, Starscream would be taking notes, but he just wants fleshie feet. Literally would do anything in this moment to whip it out and not be chastised for jorkin it to feet in front of his boss and subordinates. But he keeps and level head. He can mooch off Soundwave's extensive notes later.

Meeting adjourned. Now, his fellow Decepticons are mingling, sharing notes and opinions about the formerly discussed battle plans and what not. Starscream is anxious to hightail it outta there but his human makes eye contact with Megatron's human and now they just have to talk! They gotta catch up! They gotta make plans! And share silly videos! And compliment each other's outfits!

So now, like many other mechs, Starscream has to wait for his human to finish socializing. It's like moms at a little league game. Wine coolers are involved. (/j?)

Below are some habits and rules to keep in mind throughout your studies and some tips that will elevate your learning experiences.

☆ Setting boundaries and learning to say no

It is always easy to say yes and join every social event that one is invited to, however its crucial to consider your own personal life and the consequences of your decisions. Hanging out with friends is a needed event as a social creature, however it's better to exercise caution and know when to say "no" to focus on your own goals and dreams. Don't get pulled into the pace of others and focus on finding a routine and schedule that works for your own benefit.

☆ Being comfortable with your own company

You will find in uni that there are lots of times that you will spend alone, and maybe feel a little anxious that you're the only person who isn't constantly in the company of someone everyday like you maybe were in high school. However, realise that even the time to yourself is a time of value, and treasure those moments to focus and work on your own goals. It is easier to get lost and lose sight of your ambitions when with others who don't have the same aspirations as yourself. Use your own time to sit down and work out what you want to achieve and quietly put in the effort to win.

☆ Never being scared to ask questions

It can be quite daunting to ask questions in lectures, so I prefer to ask my questions during times that aren't forced into a short time interval, such as tutorials, office hours, and other forms of learning support that your university/college provides. This way there is no rush to answer my questions and take my time in working through concepts and ideas. Ask questions based on your own conclusions, questions that challenge current rules and perspectives. Think deeper into your lessons and seek to make use of every bit of information.

☆ Being curious

This is very much related to the point above, that being that personal interest really aids with the brains memory retention. The more things you approach with an enthusiastic attitude, the easier it is for your brain to remember and categorise. Having curiosity, even if it is forced, gives a great advantage where you seek to interconnect the information you learn with other data, and grow more networks of neurons that allows your brain to stay healthy and active.

☆ Initiating contact

Struggling with a theory or assignment? Great, it shows that you are actively trying to understand a concept and working your brain muscles. Now the best way to comprehend or complete what you are struggling with is to access support materials. Still difficult? Reach out. Your teachers, professors, tutors are all there for your benefit. Use them intelligently and squeeze every drop of assistance and support from them while they are still available to you.

☆Watching educational content to aid your studies

You can never lose from learning a bit more every day. However make sure to fact check and find your information from trusted and quality sources. In general, it's always a win to be educated in various topics from health, sciences, arts, humanities and more to gain a better understanding of ourselves, our world, and humanity.

hello! do you have any tips for creating your own psds? right now I'm just sort of throwing things at the wall and hoping it sticks!

Hi hi nonnie! I am NOT the best person for you to ask this (not in a miiile) BUT I tried making this in the most concise way I could and prayed to god it didn't get too confusing since a lot of the times I too just throw things at a wall and call it a day. I'll teach my usual psd making style and a more general one just in case that's what you were looking for! They're under the cut since it probably will get a tiny bit long but I hope it's helpful to you! <3 as always reminder that there is no correct way to make a psd this is just how i do etc etc

This has a lot of text and images so beware of the big scary maica

First of all: While you certainly *can* make a psd based solely out of one image or a compilation of your own edits (as i have done on the past), I'd say in general it's more useful and easier to make something when you have more than a singular image to check and a color spread to use. I made this little template in 5 minutes (which is a lie because my photopea crashed at first and so I had to re-do it) and I'll link it here alongside the psd itself so you can poke around and check how I do things! If you want to do your own template or anything, though, here's the color spread I use! :]

It has a spectrum, a bar line and some skin tones so it should be helpful! You can also use Travi3sapsd swatches if you'd like, since I know some people would prefer having a view of the colors before and after the psd to check!

Talking about skin tones, Amemcth also has a nice collage with characters of varying skin tones so you can check how your psd look on different skin tones. I don't think it's obligatory for all psds to look fine with every skin tone, however, I think if you're not doing it for a singular character and are indeed posting that psd for public use, making it work with darker skin tones is something good and that I encourage. If it doesn't work, remember to always indicate it by adding a "Works fine on most skin tones" or "Doesn't work on poc characters". Those warnings can also be useful for other things, like not indicating the usage of the psd on irl pictures, cartoon pictures etc.

So, final thing before we get into psd making itself (if you are using a image mask template to check colors) is adding the images! I always recommend adding characters from different sources and irl images to be sure, and with either varying colors across the spectrum so you can be certain the psd is working nicely OR images that feel similar enough in vibes so you can be certain the vibes of the psd are going towards where you'd like them to. However, it's also important to consider which colors you will be working with to make the psd, since I think it's easier to make a psd for a character when you have something in mind. For my own psds, I usually limit myself to a maximum of three colors + black and white (which I'll mess with to change their tones), so for this tutorial I'll be using yellow, purple and pink! This is the where we start. (I won't be trying to keep skintones working for this since it's all pale characters, but please have the common sense to make psds that work if you're editing a black character. don't make them white and for the love of god don't make them grayish)

Also reminder before anything that if you're editing a card and that card works weirdly with the psd you can always add adjustment layers to the card itself and mess up with the hues on it hashtag editing some characters just are a pain in the ass to edit because of colors being too similar etc so don't be afraid to fight them

First: Make A Folder for your psd to be built on. It makes things a lot easier to drag around once you have it done and arranged. Name it after the psd name, name it psd folder, whatever, just put your layers under that folder. Onto the layers.

My autistic ass mostly does psds only following one single pattern, but in case you want to mess around and play, feel free to have fun and mess around. A lot of psd making really is just messing around. In my case, these are the main adjustment layers i use: Threshold, Selective Color, Hue/Saturation, Photo Filter, Color Balance, Vibrance and, on occasion, Gradient Map and Curves. You can use others but I am >not< the best person to tell you what they do and how to work with them.

So, you now have your pretty little image layout down and the colors you want to work with in mind (pink purple yellow + bw), so what now? Well, I usually like to think on which direction I want to take this psd towards. People will always have different methods and directions on psd making. Some of them like to make some of the most eyestraining things I've ever seen which somehow work, some of them like to make a pastel so bright I can feel my eyes burning, some of them prefer to make desaturated tones, some of them like to lower the vibrancy of the image so much I almost can't see shit. Everyone has their own preferences and I work w pretty much anything, but for this I'll try to keep a standard bright view, if a little pastel and desaturated, for this.

So now, we have our colors, our images, our color swatches and a direction in mind.

First thing I like to do whenever I'm making psds is to add a threshold layer. However, not in the way I usually see around editblr. When you add a threshold layer, it should look like this

Don't just do that. Go there on that little normal bar and click it. I know people who use others, but I usually settle with either Multiply or Soft Light for it, then lower the opacity down until it's somewhere I'm satisfied with.

So this is where we end up at. I don't let my threshold opacity go any higher than a 30%. threshold basically serves to bring out the shadows on your images and bring out the shapes on them. it helps make the focus on the image clearer yadda yadda yadda. Be careful when using it on darker images, but for brighter ones it sure helps w making everything easier to see.

After adding a threshold, I add my Selective Color layer. With this you'll basically be playing around with the sliders until your colors look the way you want them to. This messes *slightly* with the hue without fully changing them (we'll get there soon), so it gives you some chance to balance out the initial shades of the psd. For the current method i'm teaching (focused colors), i usually recommend you to make the colors you >dont< want on your psd brighter or in a shade that still feels coherent with the colors you dont want in it. we'll be dealing with them soon.

So we get there. HOWEVER! don't think we're done once you mess with the main colors. the 1st selective color white is, what i'd say, one of the most important parts of psd making. you know how most anime characters in gacha games these days look pale white? Yeah. this can change it. What i usually do is bring the black slider on the white layer to the right and then increase a bit of the magenta and yellow. Boom.

It's quite tricky to use on images with heavier shadows, but for the standard pale white anime gacha character? it helps give some life to them. its quite subtle, but can help a lot to make the image get more lively. A counter thing to this is that yeahhh this can mess a lot if you want to make, you know, a >white< psd since it will also mess with the white tones themselves, so there's no 100% settled need to mess with it, just keep it in mind in case you wanna make the character a bit more tan or, you know, have a normal skintone. It also helps a lot with defining shadows, so keep it in mind :]

I usually don't mess with the neutral since it can fuck around a lot w skintones and, if i do, i always make sure to keep them on less than 20% for all levels. be careful when playing w it.

Black is a tricky one. I know a lot of you pastel girlies across editblr and psd making communities like turning it all the way down so theres no black but honestly, contrast is important. I usually make sure to bring the black scale to the right and then mess around w the other three so the black is still visible and bringing contrast to the image, but w the help of the other three, make it so the black looks softer and matches the psd itself. So, here we are!

After the selective color in my psd process, that's where we erase any unwanted color and shift the hues to where we'd like them to be. Make a hue/saturation layer and go to the colors you dont want (in our case, green and cyan) and move that hue slider to a color you want babyyy. I encourage to mess around with the color scale on the specific color so you have more power over what colors change or don't, in case it's messing with colors close to it on the scale (cyan messing with greens, greens messing with yellows etc). Be aware that doing this will fuck uppp certain images with those colors, cry about it for a bit, and go back to making your psd

If you're a picky mf just like me, you WILL add 1 or 2 more hue/saturation layers to fully clean that bar of any color you do not want. If you're normal, you'll be chill with how this looks and call it a day, so onto the next step.

After arranging your colors and possibly finding out how green is an absolute shit color to try and erase traces of, we get to color balance which is, well, where you balance the colors. go around and mess w the scale until your colors lean more towards what you want them to look like. I personally don't mess much here and the difference will be suuubtle subtle, this is more if you're just picky with colors like me and want them to look perfect in the idealized version of the psd you hold in your head.

Photo filter will basically bring the whole thing together. It serves as a filter to bring eeevery tone you have going on into a cohesive line. Always remember to lower down the density of it so the other colors are still noticeable. a lot of the time i will add more than one photo filter and play with it until I'm satisfied with how it looks <3

Then this is the time where I'll usually add ANOTHER selective color layer just to mess more with the tones and finally get them down to where I usually stop playing around.

A few more touches and you should be done! I really don't know how to even explain curves and gradient maps so play around with them for a bit and you should at least understand how they work. One thing I do a lot with my psds is make toggles to make colors darker/bring more focuses etc etc, so if you're someone who struggles to make decisions, toggles might be a good thing to add to your psds!

Now... If you don't want to limit yourself to a set number of colors? Quite simple! Simply skip the hue/saturation layer steps or delete them altogether once you're done with your psd and there, a psd that plays with the tones of the image to make them more harmonious while keeping everything cohesive! You can mess around a bit more on the two selective color layers you have if you do this by deleting the huesat layers, but it should generally look pretty nice still!

This should be it! So, to summarize everything Ive been yapping about so far...

Before diving head in, decide if you want to limit your colors or not. Also decide on a set type of psd (bright, pastel, desaturated, dark...) you want to go towards

Use multiple images to make your psd, either with similar vibes so you can ensure it's becoming something you wanted or with varying colors so you can cover your ground

Use a threshold layer with lowered opacity before anything else so the shadows on your images have more contrast

You can use a selective color layer on the white part to darken pale characters skintone and bring some more life to them, but be careful when doing this because of cards with heavier shadows, if you want to keep white as a color on the psd etc

Don't lighten the black part on the selective layer as that messes with contrast and might make your psd harder to comprehend when looking from afar

Try to still make your colors distinct enough so you're able to tell apart shapes if from afar, it can be a difficult thing to do but it helps a lot with readability

Don't be afraid to go back and forth between layers! If you're on a photo filter layer, you can always go back to make a specific color more prominent if you miss it overall

Use hue/sat as a way to change colors you don't want instead of replace color. It's tricky, but it covers more ground

Use photo filter to bring all colors more cohesion and make it so they look more harmonious

Have a headache trying to work around cards with harsher shadows

DO NOT make poc characters gray or straight up orange/red for the love of god

Feel free to make different toggles for your psds if you can't decide on which path to go towards, you can always duplicate layers and make different paths depending on what you want!

If a specific image you're using has difficult shadows or different tones to work around with the overall set, you can always just mess with that image alone and make adjustments to make it work out with the rest of the set

Remember that psds work differently on photopea and photoshop, so make sure to check that out if making them/using them/posting them anywhere and make it clear for which app they were made for!

TORN PAPER EFFECT + BLENDING TUTORIAL

thank you so much for your sweet words, dearest anon and i'm sorry it took so long to answer but it's here now so i'll try my best to explain <3 disclamer: this is the first tutorial i ever made, it's very screenshot heavy and it assumes the basic knowledge of ps and gifmaking. if there's something you don't understand, don't hesitate to ask <3 so, let's get to it!

1. PREPARING THE BASE As you can see in this shot there's a lot of space between Rhaenyra and Alicent and that makes it perfect for the ripped paper overlay without hiding much of the base gif. So the first thing i did was to crop it like this:

Also you want to make sure that the highlighted box (delete cropped pixels) is unchecked! After taking the usual steps for the animation (creating frames from layers, reversing the frames, setting frame delay) you continue with the video timeline and convert your frames into a smart object. psa: if you don't have the motivation or the time to play around with coloring here are some psds i recommend: 1, 2; as for the sharpening i think this one is the best.

now that you have your smart object sharpened and colored what you want to do next is drag it to the end of the canvas and duplicate it. after that you move the copy on the other end like the original and make sure it's under the coloring layers, like this:

After that you have to create layer masks (the highlighted icon above) for both smart object and the copy and change the blending option of the copy to screen or lighten (whatever looks best!). So this is how it looks now:

pls ignore that there are no layer masks on the smart objects i just added them after changing the blending rip </3 Now, as you see both gifs are like fighting eachother for their rightful place on the canvas. (fgfgfdf) To fix that you have to use a soft round brush to delete the parts you don't want. (feel free to play around with the brush however you want to get the result you want!) Here's my result:

2. THE OVERLAY

Now for the both gifs you want to use for the ripped paper effect you pretty much apply the same steps as the ones you did with the gifs for the base. Here are the two gifs i chose:

Before blending both gifs however you want to create a clipping mask for each of the smart objects coloring layers, like this:

And now you're ready to blend both gifs together! You choose the group with one of the gifs and change the blending again to screen or lighten and place the said group on top of the other. So this is how it looks now:

optional: if you feel like the base gif doesn't pop out enough you can always add a gradient map on one of both gifs and play around with the opacity and the color you think fits best.

Then you add a layer mask on the overlay gif group and again play around with the brush to delete what you don't want. So this is the final result:

ps - don't repeat my mistake by placing the group with the layer mask under the other group. it should be on top and the blending option should be lighten or screen.

After blending both gifs together, you're ready to place them on the base. So first thing you want to do first is place both groups of each gif in one single group together. Then you duplicate the said group in the psd of the base gif and create a layer mask. This is how it should looks:

Now, in order to create the ripped paper effect, you'll have to download a ripped paper brush pack. This is the one i use. After loading the brushes in ps (if you don't know how here is explained) you're ready to begin! Change the size and angle however you'd like to make it look how you want. And if you want you can move the overlay gif by choosing both groups in case you aren't happy with the adjustment. This is how it looks like so far:

We're almost done! Now you have to find a paper texture, (i got mine from google) place it between both groups of your gifs and create a layer mask, like so:

What you have to do here is pretty much the same thing you did with the overlay gifs. Still, make sure there's enough space for the text you want to write in. However, if you think that the space isn't enough you can just delete a bit more of the overlay gifs. Here's mine:

3. THE TEXT

You're finally ready to type out the text you want! If you're having troubles with choosing the right font and size, here are my text settings:

You can always play around with the angle and if your text is too small, zoom in so you can place it just how you like it. And since i'm a bit lazy to deal with it later, i choose to add the highlight color while it's still zoomed. You just have to add an layer above the text and use a soft round brush with opacity from 70-75% and flow from 15-18%.

For the repeated text you want to make sure you create a big space for writing so it can contain the whole space of the torn paper. Also, write where the text will be seen only and use the tab button to skip the space where the gif is. This is how it looks:

Once you're done with writing the repeated text, you want to select all the character layers and the highlight layer and move them under the overlay gif and on top of the paper, like this:

With the layers still selected and in order to contain the text within the paper the last thing you want to do is create a clipping mask. And that's It. You're done! This is the final result:
