The Winter bloodline was different from most other bloodlines. Every member, dating back just over five hundred years, had always found their soulmate—only a few bloodlines tracked their lineage back that far. Bloodlines meant something different to each pack, but for the Winters, they carried a profound legacy.

This legacy included producing what was known as the Touched, a rare genetic mutation that had occurred nearly a dozen times throughout their history. It only affected omegas, and its emergence came with unique traits and limitations. Parents of a Touched pup could only conceive one child, always a girl, whose dominant feline genes suppressed her inner wolf. This genetic anomaly gifted her with feline-like attributes, such as retractable claws, while preventing her from shifting during the full moon. Touched omegas also wouldn’t experience a heat cycle until claimed by their soulmate.

In the Winter pack, finding one’s soulmate held profound importance. When a soulmate was found, they joined the pack, even if they were an alpha. The Winter pack was unique in many ways, particularly in how they taught newcomers to harmonize with their inner wolf—a skill few other packs possessed.

When you were three years old, your neighbors, who were also distant relatives within the Winter bloodline, had their first pup, a little girl named Jessica. From the moment you met her, you felt an unexplainable connection. Jess, as you called her, became the little sister you’d always wanted, and the two of you were inseparable..

Unbeknownst to you, your parents had struggled to conceive another pup after you. When you were five, they began noticing peculiar traits in you, traits that were not quite wolf-like. Concerned yet hopeful, they had your blood tested. The results brought them immense joy: you were Touched. The news sparked a massive celebration within the pack, one you didn’t entirely understand at the time but thoroughly enjoyed. The attention and affection showered upon you made the day unforgettable.

Your parents contacted the local papers to announce the news, knowing it would eventually attract families with eligible alphas. Being Touched meant you couldn’t scent others with emotional clarity, making controlled introductions crucial to finding your soulmate safely.

From a young age, you were a rough-and-tumbled child, more alpha-like than omega in demeanor. You climbed trees, explored every nook and cranny, and always managed to find your way home. This boldness extended to school, where you refused to tolerate any nonsense from your peers. By the time you were eight, your parents decided to homeschool you due to constant conflicts and social struggles. Private tutoring proved to be a revelation; your tutor marveled at your intelligence and maturity, often struggling to keep up with your rapid progress. Half the time, you needed challenging material, and the other half, you were just like any other child.

The worst part of being a Touched—yes, there is a worst part—was your scent. To anyone but your soulmate, it was unpleasant, almost repelling. When you presented early at fourteen, your parents put you on mild scent suppressants. They hoped that your soulmate, likely an alpha, had already presented by then, as was typical for Touched omegas within the Winter bloodline.

Your presentation occurred on the first night of the full moon. You longed to join your pack as they ran under the moonlight, but your parents insisted you stay in one of the cabins on the pack’s land. Obediently, you sat by the window in the cabin’s living room, gazing up at the full moon. The songs of your pack filled the night air as they ran, their voices a chorus of freedom and unity. As you watched the moonlight spill across the land, your thoughts drifted to the future, to the alphas who would soon come, hoping to see if they were your soulmate. It was a bittersweet night, one filled with longing and anticipation.

While the series has been beloved for almost four decades, the announcement of NINJA GAIDEN 4 marks the first new mainline entry in 13 years. When asked about the long gap—spanning two Xbox console generations—Yasuda expressed Team NINJA’s long-standing desire to bring the series back. “Fans have long been asking us for a new NINJA GAIDEN game,” he said. “Koei Tecmo‘s President, Hisashi Koinuma, and PlatinumGames’ CEO, Atsushi Inaba, share a close relationship, which led us to explore a collaborative development effort. PlatinumGames had the expertise we felt was ideal for working on NINJA GAIDEN, and with support from Microsoft’s Phil-san [Phil Spencer, CEO of Microsoft Gaming], the three companies were able to take the next step towards creating a brand-new NINJA GAIDEN.”

Appearing for the first time in the Developer_Direct broadcast, and published by Xbox Game Studios, NINJA GAIDEN 4 is positioned as the direct sequel to NINJA GAIDEN 3. While maintaining the dark and gritty world that the series is known for, players will take on the role of a new protagonist, Yakumo. “A significant amount of time has passed since NINJA GAIDEN 3, and players will find themselves arriving in a gruesomely transformed Tokyo. One of the key themes of this story is the return of the Dark Dragon, which has plunged the city into chaos. Within these unsettling conditions, Yakumo will have to face off against his foes, as well as the formidable Master Ninja himself, Ryu Hayabusa,” Nakao explained.

When asked why a new protagonist was introduced, Nakao clarified that “since it’s been a while since the last game, we wanted a new hero to make the series more approachable for new players. Of course, we also wanted long-time fans to enjoy the game, so Ryu Hayabusa plays a significant role in the story, serving as a major challenge and growth milestone for Yakumo. Ryu will appear throughout the game and be playable, ensuring his prowess and presence is deeply felt in NINJA GAIDEN 4.”

Overcoming Adversity in NINJA GAIDEN 4

In the Developer_Direct trailer, the new protagonist, Yakumo, shows off stylish new mechanics which include traversal using wires and rails, something new for a NINJA GAIDEN title. When asked about the addition of these elements, Nakao revealed one of the game’s core themes: “Adversity is a key concept for this game. From the beginning to the end of each stage and even in the transitions between, everything is designed to represent adversity for Yakumo.” First and foremost, that adversity will come in the form of NINJA GAIDEN’s signature combat, but Nakao explains that these new additions outside of the fights keeps that feeling high at all times: “To maintain the tension throughout, we’ve added high-speed elements like rail and wire-based actions to keep up the sense of challenge.”

The announcement footage also depicted a rain-soaked, cyberpunk-like Tokyo, leaving a strong impression to those who watched the trailer. “In NINJA GAIDEN 4, we wanted to blend old and new elements. Tokyo in this game has been drastically transformed by the influence of the underworld., which is why it appears this way,” Nakao explained, elaborating on the Dark Dragon’s miasma rain, as well as the disasters it has caused. “Rain is a major visual theme in this game. For example, we’ve put a lot of effort into how characters look when drenched, how raindrops hit the ground, and various other effects.” These visual motifs stay true to the signature dark, hardcore atmosphere of the series while bringing new flavor to its visual direction.

Nakao also touched on the game’s anticipated difficulty. “We’ve brought together the best aspects of the series and elevated them for the current generation. Personally, I believe [the difficulty level of] NINJA GAIDEN 2 had a lot of standout qualities, and I think fans will feel its influence strongly throughout NINJA GAIDEN 4.”

After such a long break between games, it’s paramount that the team balances what’s great about the series, while adding new ideas. Despite the daunting challenges, the collaboration between Team NINJA and PlatinumGames promises an unparalleled NINJA GAIDEN experience.

“One of the key differences between modern action games and NINJA GAIDEN lies in the sense of fairness when confronting enemies,” Nakao said, explaining the series’ unique game balance philosophy. “Enemies are designed to be masters of defense and experts of unrelenting aggression, but players never feel they’re at an unfair disadvantage. There’s a sense of balance that’s been passed down through the series, transcending current-day trends.”

“The rapid shifts between offense and defense, the almost fighting game-like 1v1 combat—you’ll see these elements evolve in NINJA GAIDEN 4. At the same time, we’ve ensured that returning players will immediately feel at home when they pick up the game,” he concluded.

When asked about the challenges involved in achieving the fairness that defines the NINJA GAIDEN series, Nakao shared his thoughts with a laugh.

“If I were to go into detail about the feel of the action, we’d be here for quite a while (laughs). In all NINJA GAIDEN titles, a delicate balance is carefully crafted to maintain the satisfaction of attacking enemies without losing the speed and exhilaration that define the gameplay. I remember struggling with the fine adjustments required to achieve the right feel when we first started implementing and testing the systems. Additionally, when we brought Ryu Hayabusa into NINJA GAIDEN 4, we wanted long-time fans to experience the exact same enjoyable gameplay feel they’ve come to expect. We had numerous discussions with Team NINJA to fine-tune the mechanics and ensure everything felt just right.”

Yasuda also added that “when it comes to gameplay feel, Team NINJA was deeply involved. Fairness in combat with enemies is only possible when ultimate playability is a given. To achieve that, we pushed for even deeper refinement of controls and other aspects. I know it probably seemed like we were being a bit too demanding at times…(laughs).” This collaboration across company lines was crucial to creating the next ultimate NINJA GAIDEN experience.

One of the standout features of NINJA GAIDEN 4, which embodies the series’ experience while introducing fresh elements, is Yakumo’s “Bloodraven Form.” Nakao described this as “a technique that manipulates the blood of oneself and enemies, transforming it into a massive weapon capable of slicing through multiple foes at once.” He elaborated further on how this addition expands upon the series’ traditional gameplay.

“Yakumo fights using Bloodraven Form, and when certain conditions are met, he can unleash a move called ‘Bloodbath Kill,’ which instantly bisects enemies in one strike.” Nakao explains that, while previous entries have tasked players with working out how to approach encounters with multiple enemies, and NINJA GAIDEN 4 is introducing another exhilarating way to fight against swarming crowds: “This time we’ve added large-scale, high-damage attacks with the Bloodraven Form, enabling players to instantly turn the tide of battle in their favor.”

This system introduces moments of release from overwhelming situations, offering new depth to the gameplay that Nakao hopes both newcomers and returning fans will enjoy.

the fixer upper ranch challenge, by midnitestar.

hello! i started this challenge as more of a personal use (a sort of guideline if you will) in order to get me engaged with the horse ranch gameplay and to avoid using cheats or getting bored. then i figured that making a detailed & structured challenge would be even better, so here it is!

your city-dweller sim suddenly is made aware that their grandparent, who they have never met, has inherited them their estate at chestnut ridge, a vast 64x64 lot with an abandoned ranch and lots of family history to discover at town.

the objective of this challenge is to start from the bottom at chestnut ridge and become the most influential family in town by the end of three generations.

make money with the ranch's resources, win over the judgemental seniors, and gradually renovate the estate until it's good as new.

you can see this as sort of a mini legacy challenge, honestly FURC (fixer upper ranch challenge) is a mixture of everything...

at all times avoid using money, skill or relationship cheats (or any kind of cheat for that matter). you will only get 50,000 simoleons at the start of generation 1 as part of your sim's inheritance / or use freerealestate to get your sim's grandparent's estate for free, and set 20,000 simoleons. this will be your renovations budget.

your sim cannot travel to any other world, they must complete their activities and affairs inside chestnut ridge.

follow the intended order of the generations. there's just three of them, and their storylines are linear!

add a mayor, a sheriff, an influential family and some small-ranch townies in your world. this will enrich your gameplay and your sim's relationships! (read: drama)

start with an actual abandoned ranch lot. with a bunch of junk and stuff. i recommend grandma's abandoned ranch by ralucii and Abandoned Ranch by enikobalogh in the gallery!

feel free to use any cc or mods that you want to improve your experience, as long as they don't give you an unfair advantage over other players.

don't get a job for your sim, either full time or half time. however, you may get money through other traditional rags-to-riches methods, such as gardening, frog breeding, fishing, selling other collectibles, etc.

⸻ generation 1 : the newcomer ⊱

you grew up an only child and raised by a single, widowed mother, and although you didn't mind much your father's absence, the conditions of his death have always been a mystery to you - more so with your mother refusing to talk about the subject. what you do know about him, though, is that he loved music, and you do too. you look after his old guitar with your life, and even decided to skip college and go straight into following your dream of becoming a known musical artist at san myshuno. however, you don't find success straight away and start to lose motivation rather quickly. that's when a secretive lawyer knocks at your studio apartment's door to give you the opportunity of a lifetime: to start again in a small town, far away from your previous failure. you immediately travel to chestnut ridge and get right to it - you have a ranch to renovate and a lot to learn about your father's side of the family. no easy task, surely!

aspiration: big happy family traits: rancher, animal enthusiast, clumsy initial budget: 20k ~ 50k (read general rules)

master the following skills: guitar, horse riding, and handiness.

complete your aspiration.

go to the nightclub or the bar at least once a week.

start making money by rescuing horses, training them until they increase their market price, and selling them to other ranchers.

adopt two small goats, raise them and sell their milk. (optional: use @brazenlotus' cheesemaking skill mod to sell cheese!)

renovate at least 5 rooms in the estate OR two floors + build a small barn for one or two horses.

have a kid with another townie who has a small ranch too (optional: marry them and have other children if you'd like).

PLOT POINT! the mayor seems to be having a problem with you entering the community. they think that you're too naive, as per usual with sims who hail from the city, and that you don't know what you're doing. you know, typical condescending seniors. however, they back down a little when you tell them your last name... surely that must mean something? just what kind of person was your grandparent?

~ generation 1, chapter 6 ~

It ain't easy being the new gal around town, but it hasn't necessarily been all that diffcult either. People have been incredibly inviting, ensuring a warm welcome to this new (to her) city. FIrst impressions are everything, so it's only a matter of time before some true colors start to show.

In the living room, Lien was telling her infamous dumpster diving story to Zoe and Anaya. She tells this story at almost every group gathering where newcomers show up. In a nutshell, Lien was able to find some gorgeous antiques that were thrown out, so with a little TLC she was able to restore them and sell them for thousands! Really working the trash-to-treasure timeline...

Monica overheard this engaging story and seemed to be interested in more than just the story. It's been awhile since we've seen Monica really invested in someone's story, she's usually the [somewhat] detached, motherly friend of the group. Not this time, she seems almost infatuated with Lien.

We're sure her intentions were to keep the thoughts to herself, but it was reading clear as glass on Carmen's face. She was not impressed in the least, can't see how diving through trash would ever be worth it. Carmen is incredibly consistent and steadfast, but does that give her reason to be judgmental?

Trying to distract from the sighs and vibes coming from Carmen, Chelsey abruptly changes the subject and begins going on about her newest club idea; she really wants to rally together the musicians of the area and maybe possibly consider some group performances. She doesn't want to commit to a band to keep the politics out of it, this should just be for the fun of it and to connect with other local musicians. It doesn't seem that the other girlies are into it like Chelsey.

Amidst this girl's night, suddenly the door is opened without any knock or warning.... a burglar! He makes his way into the house and just kinda holds his space without even really being sneaky. Strange behavior, not to mention awfully bold to do this with a full house.

Reading the reactions of all the girlies doesn't help the situation at all either. Some were like Monica and were 'playing' into the moment thinking that someone must've hired a stripper or something. Reasonable considering this guy just walked right tf in. Some intrigued and got some selfies. Although this was mostly just Tziporah who was, dare I say, prepared for this? In the heat of the moment, she was the least affected...

Quickly that changed considering Zoe, Carmen, and Lien ran out the door like their lives depended on it. The shift in Tziporah was noticed, but only by Chelsey. Again...weird. We might need to ask Tzi about this later...

Like any other reasonable citizen of Cuidad Enamorada, Chelsey grabs her phone and calls the police as soon as she realizes that this is very real and the burglar already took the range oven, computer chair, and the TV!

The cops make their way over just in time and fight this guy down to the ground. Right to jail!

It's crazy how this was just an impromptu girlies night for just the usual activities, but quickly it became a night to remember. They will never forget how this all panned out.

Chelsey will never forget how each of her new friends seemed to react to the situation. She's gonna keep a close eye on that Tziporah gal...

Something is just not all right with that girl, although she is a nice person...
