@moonxpalace @cloudmel0dyy @anika-kanroji16 @smoothie03 things I think people need to know about japanese gender terminology :D
How do I tell someone I'm non-binary in Japanese?
if you just want to say “i’m non-binary”, you could say:
日: (俺・僕・私・自分は)Xジェンダーです。jp: (ore / boku / watashi / jibun wa) x-jendaa desu.en: i’m non-binary.
note that the first part of the sentence is in parenthesis because in Japanese it’s common to drop the subject of the sentence, even though that isn’t the case in English.
that said, if you want to be more specific (and if any of these happen to describe you), you could also say something like:
日: (俺・僕・私・自分は)無性です。jp: (ore / boku / watashi / jibun wa) musei desu.en: i’m genderless / agender.
日: (俺・僕・私・自分は) 中性です。jp: (ore / boku / watashi / jibun wa) chuusei desu.en: i’m gender neutral / an androgyne.
日: (俺・僕・私・自分は)両性です。jp: (ore / boku / watashi / jibun wa) ryousei desu.en: i’m bigender / ambigender.
日: (俺・僕・私・自分は)不定性です。jp: (ore / boku / watashi / jibun wa) futeisei desu.en: i’m genderfluid.
the above gender identities are relatively common among non-binary people in Japan. note that 中性 / chuusei can potentially translate into two different genders in English. i’d say it’s commonly used to mean androgyne within the non-binary community, but there’s also a strong association with gender neutrality because 中性的 / chuuseiteki is often used within society in general to mean unisex or gender neutral.
having said all that, just like when speaking English, the person you’re talking to may not be familiar with the above words. in that case, you might need or want to explain what being non-binary means for you.
日: (俺・僕・私・自分は) 男性でも女性でもないです。jp: (ore / boku / watashi / jibun wa) dansei demo josei demo nai desu.en: i’m neither male nor female.
日: (俺・僕・私・自分は) 男性でも女性でもなく、性別はないです。jp: (ore / boku / watashi / jibun wa) dansei demo josei demo naku, seibetsu wa nai desu.en: i’m neither male nor female. i have no gender.
日: (俺・僕・私・自分は)男性と女性の間の性です。jp: (ore / boku / watashi / jibun wa) dansei to josei no aida no sei desu.en: my gender is in between male and female.
日: (俺・僕・私・自分は) 男性でもあり女性でもある性です。jp:(ore / boku / watashi / jibun wa) dansei demo ari josei demo aru sei desu.en: i’m both male and female.
日: (俺・僕・私・自分は) 男性でも女性でもなく、ある性別の間に性自認が変わります。jp:(ore / boku/ watashi / jibun wa) dansei demo josei demo naku, aru seibetsu no aida ni seijinin ga kawarimasu.en: i’m neither male nor female, my gender identity changes from gender to gender.
日: (俺・僕・私・自分は) 男性でも女性でもなく、 いずれも全く関係ない性です。jp: (ore / boku / watashi / jibun wa) dansei demo josei demo naku, izuremo mattaku kankei nai sei desu.en: i’m neither male nor female. my gender is completely unrelated to either of those genders.
……..and i totally took this relatively simple ask and ran away with it. oh well. hopefully it helps you, anon. either way, this post is officially my *points at this* post for future asks. lol
08.26.2017 edit: added the pronoun 俺 / ore by request.

Dandelion News - June 1-7

1. Missoula, MT Adopts Pride Flag As "Official Flag," Legally Defying Ban On Flying It
“Montana HB819 was intended to ban Pride flags from flying on city property, but had an exception for "official flags." So Missoula made the Pride flag an official flag. […] In Salt Lake City, council members moved to designate the Pride flag, the transgender flag, and others targeted by state bans as “official city flags.” Boise, Idaho, took the same approach after its state legislature enacted a similar restriction.”
2. Dilly Dally the sea turtle returns to the ocean after flipper amputation
“An adolescent loggerhead sea turtle named Dilly Dally crawled into the Atlantic Ocean Wednesday morning, months after having a front flipper amputated at a Florida turtle hospital. […] A satellite tracking device attached to Dilly Dally’s shell will allow the center and the public to follow her journey. […] All sea turtles are endangered or threatened species. “So every sea turtle that we can save and get back out there is the win for the species.””
3. Japan’s First Zero-Waste Town: Kamikatsu
“[… R]esidents are encouraged to bring their waste to a Zero Waste Centre and separate it themselves at different stations that correspond with each of the [45] waste categories. […] By 2020, the town was recycling 81 per cent of all its waste, far above Japan’s national average of 20 per cent. […] In true circular economy thinking, the first step in the town’s waste process is not disposal but reuse, with items directed to a free thrift store[….]”
4. Puerto Rico Supreme Court recognizes ‘X’ as third gender for birth certificates in landmark decision
“Puerto Rico’s Supreme Court has mandated that the government include an “X” gender marker on birth certificates in a ruling issued on Monday. A group of nonbinary Puerto Ricans filed the case, and the ruling allows for the representation of those who identify outside of the gender binary. […] “Specifically, Plaintiffs request the Court to order the Demographic Registry of Puerto Rico to modify its application to amend a Puerto Rican birth certificate, to include an option to change one’s gender marker to an ‘X.’””
5. Smallest otter in the world rediscovered in Nepal after 185-year absence
“WWF is helping to build community stewardship for the conservation of otters and their prey, raising awareness and strengthening livelihoods. […] 375 local community members have received training on traditional gear, fish breeding seasons and eco-friendly fishing practices. […] Sonaha and Tharu households have also been supported in establishing small businesses that use their local knowledge and are less reliant on the river’s resources[….]”

morpho knight in her butterfly form following kirby since return to dreamland is so funny to me bc she originated as a planned character for the GameCube game that eventually ended up becoming return to dreamland. the devs really loved their oc and were itching to put her into a game for ages apparently. like they couldn’t fit her into the next few games but they sure as hell were having fun putting her in the background.
#also yeah morpho knight is a girl morpho butterflies are only orange when they’re female#either that or he's a transmasc king which is equally as cool.#if u go by her name in some other languages she's presumably meant to be a girl though#sick as hell you can tell times are changing bc fucked up Kirby entities get to be girls now#they always got to be nonbinary tho considering Kirby himself is genderless#English translations just use he him pronouns bc the games began being translated in the 90s#(pronouns in Japanese are a lot more complicated than in English bc there’s way more than them#and they convey a whole lot of meanings of which gender is only one and fiction playing fast and loose with that isn’t uncommon#and obviously it also happens irl there are gnc and trans people in japan as there is everywhere)

I feel like people who say that Mizu wants to be a man and enjoys being one are forgetting the fact that Mizu did not choose to dress or act the way they do and was forced to do so as a child because people were looking for a girl, so their maid mom had her behave like a boy for her own safety. This was not his own choice.
And the reason why she gets upset when others insinuate that he's a woman is because women aren't allowed to do pretty much anything in their day and age, as we see when a woman is denied entrance into a town to sell goods to feed herself and her child because a man was not accompanying them.
Being a man provides them with so much more freedom and power to accomplish her goals, and if others discover he's a woman, she'll lose that freedom.
If you view him as trans, then that's fine, but you don't have the authority to say that's canon, and shouldn't get mad when others think about her as a woman or use she/her and they/them pronouns for them. If your argument is that everyone in the show uses he/him pronouns, then know that the creators of the show use she/her. All pronouns and headcanons are valid for Mizu.
#Blue Eye Samurai#crazywolfsthings#I love Mizu and enjoy all headcanons#Cis/trans/GNC/nonbinary/fluid/etc.#Hate the ones that are trying to gatekeep#Did I use all pronouns when referring to Mizu#Yes#Don't get a chance to do that often#Don't like it#Then that's a skill issue#Go watch Blue Eye Samurai people#I need more fanfics and fan art#You can watch the first episode on YouTube#The rest is on Netflix#Please#I need more of this show#Also#Don't force modern Western views on characters from 1600 Japan#If I accidentally do that#Let me know

This is a drawing of a friend of mine, who coincidentally happens to share the name Reed lol. They've been posting some amazing photos in their stories and I just had to try drawing one of them. I'm so happy with how this drawing turned out. But I do still really dislike drawing hard surfaces and anything architectural. Working with rigid vanishing points takes such a long time for me and is a large part of the reason why this took 3.5 hours to finish. Anyways, give my friend a follow reedispainting over on ig. . . . Daily drawing 1729

X Gender (性別X) by Miyazaki Asuka (みやざき 明日香)
Miyazaki Asuka identifies as X-Gender, the Japanese equivalent of nonbinary, but that label is not nearly enough to encompass the nuances of their gender identity, sexual orientation, and overall being. In a series of autobiographical essays, Miyazaki covers a range of topics from their body dysphoria regarding their reproductive organs, to their OCD and mysophobia stemming from their childhood trauma of seeing their father suffer in the hospital. Meanwhile, they continue to learn more about the LGBTQ community and struggle to find a partner they can perhaps live their life with, or at least some friends they can talk to, realizing some things about themself and Japan's LGBTQ scene.
I found this manga to be very interesting and finished it feeling empathetic towards Miyazaki as I felt there were quite a few similarities between us, and wishing the best for them moving forward. I should note that while the style of the art is cute and chibi-like, the actual content of the essays can be mature and pessimistic. Miyazaki is very honest and blunt about what they felt and did throughout their life and some might be put off by their thoughts and actions (tw: implied biphobia, fatphobia, among other things), but honestly given that this is an autobiography of someone who is still learning about themselves and about the LGBT community, while continuing to struggle with their mental health, I'm more impressed with Miyazaki's willingness to strip themself bare for the readers' critical eyes. This story is not meant to be the be-all and end-all of the X-Gender experience; instead, it's one individual X-Gender person's account of their life. It's not neat, it's not palatable, and it's not perfect. It just is.

There are books that describe really important topics but at the same time they are so uncomfortable for me to read. But not because of the topic itself (which would be actually better because that would mean that I have to face something new and grow) but because of the side things like vulgarity, eroticism and sexuality.
I have two particular books in mind: „Walking practice“ by Dolki Min and „Norwegian Wood“ by Haruki Murakami.
The first one talks about what it means to be human and nonbinary in the binary world and how the binary world works in the mind of a nonbinary spectator.
The second one is an amazing struggle with mental illness and how it is to function in a relationship with a person who struggles. It shows many feelings and problems but also what it means to live in a reality if it actually exists.
But both of them were explicitly (and sometimes extremly) sexual. Needlessly sexual for me.
There was too much intercourse in the „Norwegian Wood“ but while reading „Walking practice“ I felt actually repulsed by the erotic descriptions. Moreover I really felt like it didn’t bring anything to the narrative.
Vulgarity has to play a role to be used but for me it looked like really tasteless sprinkles on top of an important story (here I’m talking speciafically about „Walking practice“). Yes, I’m speaking from the perspective of the aroace person. That’s why even though the sex scenes bugged me a bit, I can accept that it’s a way of displaying deep affections in the „Norwegian Wood”.
Meanwhile the vulgar sexuality of „Walking practice“ made me really uncomfortable not in a I-m-growing-as-a-person uncomfortable but in a I-want-to-stop-reading-immidiately way. Which is sad because as I stated before I consider the story extremly important in the discussion about binary vs nonbinary culture.

have y’all seen that tweet that’s like “i’m probably nonbinary but i have a job so idrc about that rn.” that is so heavily kakyoin coded
#/ tbd#i don’t mean to insinuate that nonbinary people over 40 don’t exist because ofc they do and i know some of them lol#but i will say that if kak had been born 10-20 years later he would definitely identify that way jdhshehdvdn and that’s just bc#growing up in the 70s-80s in japan there just was not a lot of information available about gender diversity and kak was already#going thru it realizing he is gay and like. while he was never ashamed of being gay it was def smth he didn’t like#openly talk about until he was in his 20s & just stopped giving a fuck#and once he learned about nonbinary people he was kind of misguided in thinking like . oh that’s only for people who#have dysphoria/don’t identify with their assigned gender at all#like he probably didn’t realize it’s actually a spectrum until he was already married and had a child and a stable career#and by that point he was just like idk whatever JTHSHSVSVSDWFWGQS#being nonbinary myself and not really realizing it until i was already in my mid twenties and also working in education#i’m kind of in the same boat in that like . i kind of just let people misgender me because it’s just too much work to frequently defend#my identity and also i’m like not super mad when people she/her or ‘miss’ me even though it does make me a lil uncomfortable lol#ultimately my portrayal of kak is a cis man and identifies as one but like . also he might be nonbinary actually . idk it’s hard to explain

Trans Teacher Needs Their Tits Chopped Off, Help Wanted
Greetings all! It’s been a hot minute, hasn’t it?
I have returned from the void of full time assistant language teaching to make a desperate plea:
Help me pay for my top surgery!!

https://gofund.me/d9ee4091
In Thailand??
(Turns out when you live in Japan, gender reassignment surgery in Thailand is more realistic than going back home to the US with friends and family. What can I say we live in a society.)
For those who don’t know me, here’s the down low: I’m a 24 year old transmasc non-binary bean who moved to Japan last year as an ALT and has since been teaching English in bum fuck nowhere Yamagata (I love it here trust me). I’ve spent most of my life living in bum fuck nowhere American Midwest, so gender transition care has always felt a little out of reach ever since I came out. As a result, I’ve put it off again and again, usually for financial reasons.
I’m done putting it off!! Can’t take it anymore!! Get these suckers off!! After a lot of research, I discovered that surgery in Thailand (with Dr. Kamol of really good review fame) was within the realm of financial possibility. So i’m taking the leap!! It’s finally happening!!
But! I could really use some help. I’m fundraising to help offset costs of surgery, accommodation, and transportation to Thailand (as well as Tokyo for airport reasons). Additionally, any extra funds past the goal will help try to get one of my parents out to Bangkok with me, as otherwise I’ll be going it alone! (And finally, any unused funds will be donated to a mutual aid fund that helps (BIPOC)LGBTQ+ living in rural areas.)
Any and all sharing of this fundraiser would mean the absolute world to me, as would donations big and small. Any help brings me one step closer to a surgery I’ve been dreaming of for years, and I cannot thank people enough for the smallest bits of help. Thank you all for your care and support, and extend some love to the trans people in your lives right now. The world’s been particularly cruel to us as of late, and we could use some kindness.

Finished Simoun, the anime is fucking perfect, like, i am angry with myself for never watching before, this anime is from 2006, i knew that shit existed and never watched.
Well, i will not post prints in this post because the quality of the video was really bad, it was what i could find, but still really bad, i'm not gonna post that, but i really loved this anime, like, is one of the best yuri (it does have some problems, and it is called Dominura and Limone relationship, Limone should be older than she is, like, a lot).
Aeru and Neviril, the two non-binary lesbians of this anime, they are perfect, their relationship is perfect, everything about them is perfect. In Simoun world, everyone is born with a female body and without any gender, when you have 17, you are forced to choose a gender and after that, your body will change accordingly to your chosen gender, unless you are a Simoun Sibylla, a priestess that never choose a gender of their own. So all simoun Sibylla are non-binary. Because Aeru's nation is a theocracy and the Simoun could be used as a weapon, the priestess Sibyllas was chosen to go to war.
Aeru is a really funny thing, they choose to go to war because they didn't want to choose any gender, ever, and there is another motive that is shown during the anime. Neviril already was a Sibylla, and was fine about the part of never making the choice, so both non-binary lesbians (if i was born in this world i would 100% choose to be a woman, the biology in Simoun world seems like paradise for me).
Kinda everyone is transgender in this anime? yeah, you can read everyone as trans in this anime, making the choice, refusing to make it, both you can read as trans in a certain point of view.
The story is really good. Is a war story, full of tragedy, sadness, it does have romance, and flying war machines that break the space and time. Aeru and Neviril stay together and both will be together forever, until the end of time and probably beyond that, motive? major spoilers, but they stay together forever and is the most perfect ending i could wish for both, they deserved it.
Well, this anime is a solid 10/10 for me, excluding the whole Limone part (i had to turn off my brain to ignore how fucking young Limone was in the most part of the anime) i have no complain about it.
#txt#Simoun#nonbinary#lesbians#trans#war story#was kinda wild#when in the west people was preventing every bit of positive representation of lgbt people to show up in media#in japan things like Simoun was being produced#26 episodes#have a manga too#love this anime so much#i will search for the manga
