Miriam Margolyes on pronouns. Miriam is 82 years old, and if she can get it, I don't want to hear anyone give the excuse that someone is of an older generation and 'just can't get it.'
'What does it matter?' It's simple. It's easy. No more excuses. No more considerations. It's that simple.
youtube
Does she conflate pronouns and trans identity? Yes. But it doesn't matter. She's trying. That's all any of us ask.

In defense of John Lithgow
In defense of John Lithgow...
It's official. John Lithgow is going to play Dumbledore for the Harry Potter TV series.
I noticed John Lithgow is already getting a lot of hate for accepting the role and being treated as a transphobe by default. There's a very public open letter essentially telling him he's not an ally if he doesn't quit.
Here are some things to consider.
1. If he quits, it doesn't change how much money J. K. Rowling gets for the project. They would just find someone else.
2. John Lithgow just starred in a very pro LGBTQAI+ movie as a gay grandfather to a nonbinary grand-child. He is pro-nonbinary and trans rights and actively supported the community up to this point.
3. John Lithgow is from the US. This violates J. K. Rowling's stance for Dumbledore to only ever be played by NON-American (preferably UK or Irsh) actors). His casting specifically undermines her very firm stance that prevented Robin Williams from playing Hagrid in the movies and this casting choice IS a middle finger to J. K. Rowling.
Think about it. They chose a very vocally pro-LGBTQAI+ actor who just starred in an LGBTQAI+ family film about a gay grandfather and nonbinary grand child. And not just that. He's American. He's precisely the sort of person she does NOT want as Dumbledore. Consider this spite-casting. Notice J. K. Rowling has not commented yet about the casting. She is NOT happy and is probably under an NDA preventing her from speaking out against it. If she actually liked the casting you know she'd have said something by now.
So please don't think ill of John Lithgow over this.
He was also Emperor Norton in the very pro Queer The Sandman audio drama, which features nonbinary and trans actors and characters such as Mason Alexander Park as Desire and Reece Lyons as Wanda.

I am 100% a trans man and I don't consider myself non binary in any way but lately I've been jacking off while thinking of Edward Norton choking me, breeding me, and getting me pregnant.
h. how is this nonbinary-OH THE PREGNANCY
nah imagining getting bred is like one of the most fundamental parts of being a male bottom. nothing nonbinary about that

Hi margot do you have a list you'd share of the Hugo and nebula women? This is so in my vein and I've been feeling the itch to read more sf again also I hope you enjoy the female man I thought it was a fun whirlwind
Here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1JgcIyXqcOJbAqMjXKEsGgTRCRBGm6ksCInb6nqFdeao/edit#gid=0
I'm expanding this to women and nonbinary authors, which was less of a concern when I was just doing pre-1980 books, but a few more these days.
Authors with an asterisk next to their name means they won the award for that year.
For the 50s-80s I actually checked every author, since a few (like Andre Norton) used pseudonyms. For the 90s on, I got lazy and mostly just assumed gender based on first name (I know, I know) and only checked ambiguous ones. May or may not be entirely accurate, and there might be a few I have or have not deleted that should be. But it's probably most of them.
Nonbinary authors I am aware of: Caitlín R. Kiernan, Annalee Newitz, Shelley Parker-Chan, and C.L. Polk. And there may be more! I admittedly was not being super thorough.
I removed Yoon Ha Lee, who is the only trans man I know of who's been nominated, but I do love his books so I want to give a shoutout here to the Machineries of Empire series anyway.
Charlie Jane Anders, Rachel Pollack, and Ryka Aoki are the trans woman I'm aware of on the list, though again, there may be more.
The second tab has all winners/nominees, including for a few other awards. (I did delete one entry for association with the Sad Puppies nonsense.)
Also if you have trouble finding any of the books, let me know and I can probably help! I've managed to track most of the older ones down. (I've had good luck with archive.org and libgen for the long out of print.)
#also caveat that just because they're nominated doesn't mean they're good#i've read and hated many of these haha#gothiccoherence#asks#book blogging#leaving jk r*wling in for completeness. despite it all.

219. Linda Lowery - Endless Quest #11: Spell of the Winter Wizard (1983)

The first of the D&D Endless Quest books not written by Rose Estes (don't worry, she'll be back, for #13, and later on in this project for 6 full Greyhawk novels!), this one was brought to us by Linda Lowery, who would write another Endless Quest book and a couple of the HeartQuest books coming up.

It's interesting to see, for a hobby which was really male oriented at the time, how much of the fiction about the game was actually written by women writers. From the first D&D novel, Quag Keep by André Norton (pen name of Alice Norton) to the Endless Quest books by Rose Estes and now Linda Lowery, only in 1984, 10 years after the release of the game will we get a volume of D&D fiction authored by a man. Even then, women remain an important part of the shaping of the lore, lest we forget Laura Hickman's contributions to making adventures more lore heavy or Margaret Weis' part in the development of Dragonlance and the writing of the extremely successful novels.

Back to the subject at hand, in this Endless Quest we are the stepchild (our gender is never specified, interestingly, first nonbinary protagonist in the series) of the Wizard of Eternal Spring who gets cursed by the Winter Wizard and we have to go off and find a cure. As usual there are several possible paths, and even if this adventure is a bit wordier and has less of a flowing narrative than those written by Estes, it's still an entertaining couple of hours worth of reading as you explore alternate paths to a successful conclusion.

My thoughts on the EP Making Picture Books Beautiful by UW’s own, Miles Ray
UW freshman Miles Ray released their first creative project, Making Picture Books Beautiful, onto streaming platforms this past January. The 13 minute EP examines the nature of being nonbinary as a kid in Florida with elements of dysphoria, and efforts to undo 16 years of gender programming. All six tracks made me feel like I was being guided through some of the most formative events of Miles’ life, an experience I was not adequately prepared for.

I sat and listened to this EP on a train after having been flirted with by a creepy man at the train station– I was already on edge. When I interviewed Miles about the project, they described it as “an experience in and out of a panic attack,” and that uneasy feeling only flourished as I watched the trees blur by. It certainly depends on what you’re doing and where you are as you listen to Making Picture Books Beautiful.
The first track on the EP, “a word to my son,” transpired “within the span of 30 minutes on a whim” explains Miles. Having made music like this before, they wanted to take this idea and run with it, ultimately resulting in the rest of the EP. An old Nat King Cole record Miles had thrifted is sampled in the beginning of “a word to my son,” but is slowed down and reversed, which adds even more dissonance to the track. I really enjoyed the sampling within the EP as there were a lot of sounds that made me feel distinct emotions.

“The Disappearance of Ray Norton” by Richmond Fontaine is a spoken word piece that Miles says inspired some of the EP. The song uses guitar as a musical element, but feels more personal as Fontaine’s sweet southern accent sugarcoats the tragic story he’s describing to listeners. There’s a different sense of vulnerability I feel when listening to spoken word versus traditional songs. I think the idea of being spoken to about something so personal creates an atmosphere so tangible that it can sometimes feel like you’re eavesdropping on someone talking about their deepest, darkest secrets. Making Picture Books Beautiful accomplishes this feeling.
My personal favorite track on the EP is “mama” because I hear similarities between the lyricism and “The Disappearance of Ray Norton.” They touch on sensitive topics through the reading of their own poetry, and, being the last song on the EP, I think it’s an impactful closing. Being their first released creative project, I think Making Picture Books Beautiful is a well crafted amalgamation of the trials and tribulations of understanding identity. It takes the complexities of what it means to be human and puts that idea into a tangible form. Go listen to Making Picture Books Beautiful and support the University of Washington’s talented artists!
Till next time,
Sophia

Number 9
I was tagged by @skyderman (thank you!!) their post is here!
Rules: Answer the questions, then tag 9 people
I’ll go ahead and tag @kimicapucciny @spaced-out-cats @meckman64 @rabbitic @eyesteeth @darkfeather25 @sirjohnbaconvi @annalrk @grimm-snarkk ( no pressure of course! )
I put all my answers under a readmore cause i ended up rambling a lot lol
List three ships:
Crowley/Aziraphale from good omens - I just finished watching the new season so they're on my mind. they have the world’s most agonizing slow-burn romance and I’m here for it.
Yuudai/Tasei from SAKANA - I just. I love these funny fish market guys so much. I’m such a sucker for the grumpy guy x ray of sunshine ship dynamic. Very excited for this comic to start updating again!
Raine/Eda from The Owl House - I love both Raine and Eda as characters so of course I also love them together. AND I am not over the fact that we got a canonical nonbinary character in a children’s cartoon WHO ALSO GETS A COOL MONSTER GIRLFRIEND!
Currently listening to?
I’ve been listening to a lot of The Scary Jokes recently. their new album, Retinal Bloom, is rlly good. I’ve also been listening to Burn Pygmalion again, which might be one of my favorite albums ever?? definitely recommend checking them out if you haven’t heard their music before.
Last movie you watched?
it’s been a minute since I actually sat down to watch a movie so I actually don’t know lol. If I had to guess it was probably the D&D movie! I really loved the mix of cgi and practical effects they used! The unfortunate side effect of watching that movie is that now I want to cosplay all my characters SO BAD. but I don’t have cosplay money rn😔😔😔
What are you currently reading?
I’m slowly making my way through Frankenstein! I actually picked up this copy from a local used bookstore and didn’t realize until later that it’s a Norton Critical edition. So it has the original 1818 text plus a bunch of extra historical context and annotations, which is pretty cool!
I’m also re-reading the first Wolves of the Beyond book, I read the whole series once as a kid and thought it would be fun to revisit. its....okay. Definitely not as well written as I remember but I guess I should have expected that lol
What are you currently watching?
Like I said above, I just finished watching the new Good Omens season a couple of days ago! I do have some criticisms, and I don’t think it rlly compares to the first season or to the book, but I enjoyed it overall and had really fun time watching it!
What are you currently consuming?
currently water, but if i was answering this anytime before 1pm it would have been coffee lol
What are you currently craving?
Very specifically a Freddy’s chicken burger with spicy fry-sauce.
#i actually typed up most of this like. a day after i was tagged#then i got interrupted and it ended up sitting in my drafts for like a week lol

2024 New-to-Me Media
In 2022 I started keeping track of all the new books/movies/games/etc that I got to experience, so I decided to post the 2024 list! Including basic thoughts on them-
The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells- I highly recommend this series of novels and novellas, they're fun, emotionally resonant sci-fi with some extremely cool premises for setpieces and action
True stories (1986)- Honestly I half-watched this one at a friend's house but it was very funny and charming, the Talking Heads are there
The Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri- I need to read more poetry and older writing in general, it gives so much to how I see modern media and people of the past. The narration was a bit dry on my audiobook but that is not the fault of the text.
A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle- Charming for what it is, I can see why its held up as a kid's story for as long as it has but it is also so very of its time.
The summer war (2009)- I expected this to bit more action/cartoon than it was going in but I found a really good family story in there. It's an excellent watch
Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams- Its everything it's touted as, clever and witty and dry, but I think reading it for the first time as an adult in 2024 really takes away from the punch. It's had so much influence on things after it that it almost feels superannuated
Dracula by Bram Stoker- This is technically my second go at Dracula, but the first one I was 12 and got bored with it. There is so much more to this book than any adaptation has given justice. I would die for Mina and Johnathan. Dracula is so funny
The Boy and the Heron (2024)- Another gorgeous and meaningful work from Studio Ghibli, and the first I have ever gotten to see in theatres. The pacing and storytelling feels a little disjointed at times, but it deserves a rewatch
Terrified (2018)- This horror film has an incredibly strong opening and first half, but unfortunately I think it falters in the climax. Definitely recommend though.
Just King Things (Ranged Touch network podcast)- An incredible, funny, academic analysis of all of Stephen King's books in publishing order. I have learned a lot and gotten so much cool context (and other reading reccomendations!) from it.
Beyond the Gender Binary by Alok Vaid-Menon- An excellent little memoir on being nonbinary, worth a read on someone's experience
The Tommyknockers by Stephen King- This book is wild. It's like three books and way too long, but its an amazing look at King himself at the time in a metacontextual way. It's peak Weird King with a lot of his great emotional punches. There's a flying murderous coke machine.
Christine (1983)- It makes cars so sexy. It kind of lets all the main characters down. The gas station scene RULES.
Eyes of the Dragon by Stephen King- King's throw at a shorter pure fantasy aimed at a (younger?) Audience. I get a lot out of it but it is another wild one.
The Shining by Stephen King- Stunning how long it took me to read this incredible staple work of King's. It manages to be so thoughtful and strange and haunting. The final act suuuucks but. Man it hits.
The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster- While charming and packed with puns, this would 100% be better in the movie or illustrated book version than the audiobook form I read it in
Fairy Tale by Stephen King- Hey this one fucks severely. One of my favorite King books now. Modern dark fantasy adventure that would fit right in as a Labyrinth-esque movie with a lot of grit and cynicism and thought on People. I loved it.
Revival by Stephen King- I think this suffers from a similar issue a lot of his books do with endings, but its so good through it. I enjoyed this one a lot, it loves rock and personal faults in a really great way.
Paradox Space Volume 1- I remember reading this comic when it was actually coming out. For Homestuck content- it is ok!
Homestuck made this world from the Ranged Touch network- A full, complete reread and discussion of homestuck but the method is great- it focuses on not just discussion from an experienced reader and a totally new one, but cultural and fandom contextualization of Hussie and all their works from the very beginning. Its so interesting.
The Dark Tower by Stephen King- I actually started this one in 2021 and then chickened out because I was so anxious about ending this bizarre trek through King's widest and most personal work. It's weird. It has punch. I cannot say it doesn't fit. It is worth the read.
Legends and Lattes by Travis Baldree- A charming and incredibly well written little fantasy slice of life, its a little dry for me but very sweet.
Electric Dreams (1984)- You can tell this was directed by someone who makes music videos. It is so fascinated with early computers. I wish there was a little more to it, especially Edgar, but it sticks with me.
Graveyard Shift (1990)- The ultimate pro-union movie. There's so many rats. The acting is weird. The credits song is WILD. I love it.
Monstrous Regiment by Terry Pratchett- You'll see this put me on a Discworld bender that carried me through the end of the year. I had only read one Discworld book before this (Mort, many years ago) and it ate me alive. If you have a gender and like monsters, this is THE book.
Watership down by Richard Adams- Another excellent and interesting read. It actually had the same reader as The Divine Comedy and it did not benefit from it, it was so dry, but again it is not the fault of the book and I highly recommend it.
The Wee Free Men by Terry Pratchett- I can feel this influencing my writing already. I love Tiffany. It has so much emotional resonance. It is endlessly charming.
Bookshops and Bonedust by Travis Baldree- everything I said about the first one goes for this. It has different strengths and faults, but is still well written and relaxing.
Fever Dreams by Dev Solovey- A brand new novella with some INCREDIBLE horror and some bafflingly punchy and well-timed jokes, all about nightmares and trans victory and surviving despite it all. Cannot recommend enough.
Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie- Another that did not benefit from the reader not giving enough of a performance to the characters, it is a lovely little mystery that is a classic for a reason. I love when a lot of characters are smug and charming and strange.
Shark Side of the Moon (2022)- This movie is stupid and bad. It KNOWS its stupid and bad. It has shark titties in it. 10/10
Death Note (2017)- I have not read or seen the original Death Note. This one is ALSO stupid and bad. They really want to soften Light and the casting/Americanization is weird. Why is the girlfriend the villain
The Book of Bill by Alex Hirsch- Hirsch knows where his audience is. This one is so funny and visually interesting and strong, especially for Gravity Falls fans who were there at the start.
Dr. Sleep by Stephen King- A fitting and really cool sequel to The Shining. Its definitely a sort of... softer King? But it has such surprisingly sweet takes about life and death to it and the horror is just as King as ever (good and bad but definitely sticks with you). Another I really enjoyed and recommend
Prince of Darkness (1987)- Man, I like John Carpenter and the concept SHOULD be amazing but this one misses. It spends so much time justifying its own premise that it does not do any good character work. Its also grossly misuses an Alice Cooper cameo AND song. What the hell man
Renfield (2023)- So glad I gave this one a try. Fucking wild. Nic Cage is doing amazing as Dracula. It vibes.
Shocker (1989)- This movie is too long and a little confused but it is so fucking weird. It pulls off being baffling and sometimes funny. I enjoyed it?
Going Postal by Terry Pratchett- This one is ALSO excellent. It is clever, compelling, one of my favorite Discworld books so far and definitely my favorite book about the logistics of the postal service
Great God Grove by Limbo Lane games- What a stunning, funny, charming followup to Smile For Me. More on trauma, self value, inherent queerness and the value of communication. Its also just cute. Check it out.
Evil Bong (2006)- Baffling. Terrible. Had a blast.
Thud! By Terry Pratchett- The mystery is the most compelling part of this and like all Pratchett books so far it has a lot to say. Not my favorite, but I am not putting down Discworld yet at all
A Hat Full of Sky by Terry Pratchett- While not quite as strong as The Wee Free Men, it is a worthy and thoughtful followup with a lot of feeling and interesting ideas.
Making Money by Terry Pratchett- Again a worthy followup that is not quite as strong as the previous book. I like what it is doing with the characters, but I still do not understand the banking system.
Elvira: Mistress of the Dark (1988)- Lot of boobs. I think it misses out on some opportunities but hey, what can you do. Boobs
#Here comes another Python post#A lot of great stuff this year!#I look forward to more new experiences in 2025

Don't assume things about me irl based on my characters. I am a bi white nonbinary male (He/Him), however I like having a diverse cast of characters of all sexualities, genders and races because it reflects my friends and the reality we should be working towards, and I refuse to change that to fit anyone else's wants, and I avoid writing about hate centered issues like racism sexism, and homo/Xenophobia, not because I'm denying they exist and matter, but because I don't have the authority to speak on these things as if I have experienced them from all perspectives, and I understand that even if I did i may be speaking from a place of privilege. I also avoid religion as a topic, for much of the same reason, and because my fictional world in a fictional simulation may not mess with irl belief systems in a respectful way. If I am ever successful enough to hire a diverse team of people to help me improve the world I'm building now to be equipped to tell those kinds of stories through the correct lens, I'd be more than happy to consider it, but for now it's just me and I'll stick to what I'm comfortable with speaking on.

My gender identity is nonbinary, which comes under the trans umbrella, something for which I feel vaguely uncomfortable because my journey as someone whose gender can best be described as "idk shrug", has never been particularly fraught. I've never had a great deal of angst about any of it, except inasmuch as I feel like I should have *more* angst about it, so I try to experience feelings about my gender identity being sort of squiggly and then realize that I just don't have feelings about it and then I feel guilty about not having feelings when this is so important to other people... and you can see where this goes.
When I was growing up, I didn't spend any time wishing I was a different gender than I was; it just never occurred to me that was an option. I was the child of a tomboyish mother and the men in my life were none of them Men's Men, so my understanding of what typical gender roles looked like started out pretty skewed. I did very cheerfully see myself in science fiction stories where the protagonists were boys, but honestly, if they had been girls with the same struggles, I would have seen myself in those, too. My first fanfic (when I was, like, 7) was writing myself into an Andre Norton story about a boy pirate, where sometimes I was the pirate and sometimes I was the pirate's best friend. Looking back on it, I can clearly see the points where I should have (could have? might have?) seen that there was something up with my gender far sooner than I did.
So, I'm floating with no real dysphoria or euphoria or really any feelings related to my gender except that I feel pretty genderless. I'm just sort of here and vibing while my trans friends are out there having Big Realizations and Finding Themselves and my only real feeling is that I wish other people didn't make such a big deal out of it, except if it brings them joy, in which case I enthusiastically endorse it for them. I'm vaguely annoyed when I have to perform gender for anyone or any reason other than my own entertainment.
Clearly, my trans friends' experiences are not my experience, but their experiences are closer to my experience, like distant cousins. If I have to be lumped in with folks, this is a good bucket to exist in/umbrella to be under.
So, shout out to my enbies whose gender identity is weird and complicated and you aren't sure where you fall in the field. Shout out to my trans friends, whose experience of gender is so very different than my own. I love you all.
