honestly i've been struggling with that one for a bit cos pov switch/i'm not really used to writing a large group of people at once/feeling kinda unsatisfied with what i've outlined so far/general writing motivation issues so far etc

but! i can dump a scene here that would've taken place like.... two chapters later? (as for context... eh i'm sure you can pierce it together)

Closing its eyes (far far too many eyes–) it could pretend it was home. That it was another normal summer day. That it was not alone.

One moment he could restrain himself, keeping as far away as possible. Far from being hurt, from hurting them again, again, again.

Next, it was refusing to leave their sides. Craving, needing, wanting the comfort of those gentle hands, warm arms, soothing voices, pitying looks. Begging, stealing, taking all of those scraps. Tired of being starved. It was so, so tired of being alone.

Moses, he was pathetic.

There had been Four moments ago. Four and one pest.

Only Two now. The other two had left. In danger.

But it knew the Two left behind were in far greater trouble. So. It was good it was close by. Could be useful for something.

But. There was a gaping chasm inside, in his head. Missing something.

Shaking its head, it squeezed its eyes shut. Only to wince as its thoughts drifted back to his family. By merely existing, it spilt its guts for all to see and mock and laugh at and be repulsed by. He used to be great at keeping all of it hidden.

A whine escaped its throat. He always had been so Weak and Stupid

It was so tired of this. Was so tired. Couldn't remember when he wasn't tired.

It blinked as the floorboards by the door creaked. The room was still empty from anyone but itself. But the noise continued to draw closer and closer. It squirmed back, its hackles raised, until it was unable to press further back into the corner of the room.

“--Sorry,” said a voice, not belonging to the Two. Not from the pest either. “I couldn't– I can't let him–” The voice cut itself off.

It couldn't see the owner of the voice but its heart hammered in its chest, only feeling fear and hurt and betrayal at that sound. The anticipation of another blow. More hurt.

“But I can fix this, I will fix this– I'll get you back.”

It stumbled to its feet, stumbled blindly towards the noise. The threat.

“But I need you to know that Bill was lying. I could never hate you.”

He was so tired of being lied to.

you may have already talked about this so forgive me buuuuut what were Belle and Adam's reactions to each pregnancy? and their baby's reactions as they joined in on the fun of learning they would be getting siblings?

i have been SO excited to answer this all day. i love pregnancy discoveries/announcements SO MUCH i just think they’re so cute. (i mean, they can certainly be Not Great news, but in otp land!!!! CUTE!!!!) so without further ado, let’s get INTO IT!!

okay for their first baby… gosh i’ve probably written and rewritten this scene twenty different ways over the years. this is the BIG ONE!! the moment they go from a married couple to PARENTS!!! it’s HUGE it’s LIFE CHANGING!! i think about it all the time. and i think after all these years i finally have a scenario that i’m most happy with, that i’d really love to write and sort of insert into my canon, but just haven’t finished yet. and the funny part is that i’ve already written The Conversation™️ i just have to set it up and context and story and all that jazz. but anyway, i think it’d be such a big thing for both of them.

for belle, she really never imagined she’d get to be a mother. and i think the idea of motherhood, in a way, sort of scared her. she LOVES children for sure, but i think growing up in the village with no real prospects, no chance of getting out and being free, the idea of becoming someone’s domestic little housewife and homemaker was just such an awful idea to her. she wanted true love, she wanted a family of her own, but she just didn’t want it to be in that little provincial town with no hope of escape. and marrying someone and having their kids would just tether her there forever. and she wanted more for herself!!

so then, when she marries, idk, THE PRINCE? and becomes THE QUEEN? everything just changes. she’s not just some guy’s little wife. adam would rather die than let that happen. adam believes in her and pushes her to be as incredible as he knows she is. she has so many responsibilities in her role, she’s a freakin powerhouse!!! so when she does end up pregnant, almost a year after they get married, she’s actually quite excited by it. because she Knows she’s so much more than a homemaker. she doesn’t have to compromise herself to be a wife and mother, as she had once feared. she gets to have a baby with the love of her life and still fulfill all her own dreams. she can really do it all, your honor! so, in short, realizing she’s pregnant that first time is exciting and a huge relief knowing this isn’t the end of her life, just another chapter.

for adam it’s more like AAAAAAAHHHHHHHH !!!??!! PANIC PANIC PANIC WORRY WORRY WORRY !!!!!! but i can elaborate further. essentially, adam was never really keen on fatherhood. surprise surprise, having an abusive father and growing up suppressed and bullied and then directionless and scared and all that… didn’t really enthuse him on the idea that he’d be a great parent for any kid. despite that, of course, he did know deep down he would have to have an heir at some point. probably with some random woman who was deemed a politically advantageous match, someone he didn’t care about, the way he didn’t care about anything. but he ignored that prospect as often as possible, the same way he ignored all his other royal responsibilities. BUT! NOW? he Loves his wife……… he loves his wife so much and everything is different now. he’s a changed man now. he’s trying so hard to see the goodness in the world now. everything is brighter and it’s scary but he’s strengthened by her and supported by her and loved by her and… and… she’s pregnant 🥺

i’ve written this scene so many different ways mostly because adam’s reaction is just so… complicated. he wouldn’t be angry but i don’t think he’d be overtly happy either. he’s changed, he’s grown, but “fatherhood” is such a Deeply Rooted issue for him that i think when belle tells him, he just doesn’t even react at first. he knows he loves her and knows, logically, this is a good thing, so he holds her and starts worrying about her and starts processing this great big change in his life. and he fears becoming his father, despite the fact that it’s his mother’s kind heart beating inside him. and belle tells him there is no one else on this earth she’d rather have children with, because no one would ever believe in her the way he does. the way she believes in him. so they have lots of reassuring talks over the course of the pregnancy, and of course, that beautiful day when their first little one finally arrives, it’s just magic 🥹

GAH! first baby euphoria consumes my soul. i could talk about it forever, clearly. but i’ll move on to baby number TWO!

i actually HAVE written this fic of belle telling adam!! it’s a couple years old now so i’m tempted to not link it but it’s still how i imagine it happens in canon so it’s okay. i shan’t cringe at my old writing!! anyway, it’s christmas 1743 when belle tells adam they’ll be spending NEXT christmas with one more little angel than this year 🥰 adam is a lot happier on the second round, now that he’s been a father for a bit of time, now that he’s positively fallen in LOVE with his daughter, he’s more excited to keep growing their family. renée, however, is not even two yet when this is happening, so she really doesn’t have any thoughts about it lmao. HOWEVER, once her baby sister arrives, she is Not enthused by the sudden lack of attention. i’ve written a cute one about that so i’ll link that as well <3 i really want to write the moment renée meets juliette, i think it’d be sort of funny considering how young she was, but i just haven’t gotten around to it. my fic about the day juliette was born is already so hectic for other reasons, so it just didn’t work to write renée into it.

LASTLY!!! LE PRINCE!!!! it’s like you’re in my HEAD bro because just Yesterday i got a cute idea for how this pregnancy may be discovered. (and i have considered multiple possibilities, this is just the latest and greatest). i was imagining perhaps juliette (age 4) comes down with a cold of sorts, so belle’s been taking care of her. then belle starts to feel sick, and she just brushes it off thinking she caught juliette’s bug. but then juliette gets better and belle is still feeling like GARBAGE. and eventually it clicks that it’s because she’s pregnant <3 i think this third one catches them both off guard just a bit because the girls came so quickly one after the other and then it’s been almost five years and nothin??? i mean it’s the 18th century it’s not like they were doing anything to prevent it. (i am aware of 18th century contraception methods but these two definitely were not using them lmao). regardless, when it finally clicks, adam and belle are both just sort of like “oh shit!!!! NICE!!!!” lmao. they had gotten settled in life with their two girlies, but they’re certainly not mad about adding to their number 💖

as far as the girls’ reactions, i would also like to write that some time, but haven’t yet. in general, i think renée (who was very nearly 7) just EXPLODES with a million questions. she’s also very adamant that this baby Must be another girl (spoiler alert: it was not💙) and she’s just in general trying to be as obnoxiously involved as possible. she’s always tossing out name ideas (usually characters from the books she’s reading, but also lots of flower names like chrysanthemum and hyacinth). she also loves putting her hand on belle’s growing bump and asking “what’s the baby doing now??” like 20 times a day. (she loses her mind whenever she feels him kick🥹)

juliette, on the other hand, takes a long time to process it (it’s the autism, but also she’s just younger). but it sort of helps that, at the time, lumiere & plumette were already expecting their second child. so adam & belle could be like “you know how auntie plumette is gonna have a baby soon? well now so are WE!” and juliette’s like “oooooohhhhh 🤔 (doesn’t get it at all).” but when that baby arrives (a lil lad named xavier🥰🧡) juliette gathers what’s going on. that is a BABY. she does like feeling the baby in mama’s tummy move as well, it’s very wild to her. she’s much more quietly curious about her future little sibling than renée is, but she’s just as excited when they do finally meet him. which i HAVE written 🥹🥹🥹

AND, juliette gets the credit for giving her little brother his lifelong nickname. when her parents told her they were naming him maurice, she very quietly replied “hi, reece☺️” and he is forever called reece/reecy by his family and friends henceforth 🩵 (it also helps to differentiate from his beloved namesake grandfather!)

renée isn’t super excited about having a brother instead of another sister, (especially when lumiere and plumette already have TWO boys. (ENOUGH WITH THE BOYS IN THIS GOSH DANG CASTLE!!!😒)) but she does come to love him!! even though he’s annoying as hell!!! but it’s his gotdamn right as the little brother💛

I just read about the new ending, where in the name of "self-care," Nani gives up custody of Lilo to David's grandmother so she can go to college.

You know what? This reminds me of the issue from the 2017 Beauty and the Beast that I just reblogged my old post about. How in the name of "empowering" Belle, it has her only pretend to sacrifice her freedom for her father, but secretly plan to escape from the start, and only give up that plan out of growing affinity for the Beast.

I get what both movies are trying to do – and back in 2017, for a brief, thoughtless instant I actually liked the change in BatB – but what about the main themes of the entire story?!

Modern Disney seems to be saying:

"Sacrifice for loved ones is beautiful and heroic... but only if a man does it. For women, it's disempowering, and we should erase it from our remakes."

If they do get around to remaking Frozen – and I hope they don't for many years, it's too soon! – what will they do to that ending? Have Anna choose not to give her life to save Elsa?

What would be the backstory behind Judge Claude Frollo?

So tip what I’d do is basically just adapt the backstory he had from the book. He and his brother are orphans, taken in by the church, Frollo grows up to be the self righteous judge and his brother Jehan becomes a gambling drinking wastrel. I think the animosity/belief in his own righteousness would grow from Frollo’s relationship with his brother. Jehan’s rebellious actions constantly put their hopes of stability growing up in jeopardy, and young Claude feels superior to him because he’s rewarded for towing the line, and that just sort of builds up overtime to the whole world, eventually turning from “I’m in the right because I’m doing right” to “I’m always in the right”.

Also I had Jehan be the father of Claudine in my rewrite of her for Canon Descendants, as Claude Frollo deserves to die eternally frustrated.

Since the backstory wasn’t really long I will take this opportunity to drop the little idea I had for my take on a HOND 2 rewrite/better sequel. I was looking over the Disney Villain Recruitors from Tokyo DisneySea—Park only characters that are like new Sidekicks to the villains and wondering how I’d adapt them to the DisneyVerse, and had the idea that Frollo’s Recruiter, Veil, would actually be a demon that’s been sent as his handler basically when he makes a deal in Hell to come back as a revenant to try and get revenge.

The bell she wears around her neck is his reliquary which’s holds what’s left if his soul—Ala Rasputin from Anastasia—and the plot , which would include a rewrite of Madelline from HOND 2 cuz I like her design and Quasi deserves love to, would probably pull in my rewrites for Zephyr and Claudine as well and have a Medieval Folk Horror flavor over all of it.

We had 3 Frozen x BATB crossover fics, including 2 Belle/Elsa and the very first fic in the Belle/Ryder Nattura tag. We need more of both ships!

Let me ramble about Adam x Hades x Belle

Okay so it obviously started with just Adam and Hades at MK

They were dorm-mates and at first they hated each other but you know- enemies to lovers stuff

Sadly Adam was friends with Gaston at the time and he does not like his best friend dating another guy because it's so emasculating

A backstory I have for Adam is that he was raised by the castle staff without parents as we don't hear anything about his parents in the canon BATB (although tbf Descendants doesn't gaf about continuity but I'm somewhat trying), and as the prince and only heir to the throne he wasn't allowed outside much

Then he met Gaston by chance one day when he was ten and they became best friends, he was his only friend until he started attending Merlin academy

So with the risk of losing his, in his eyes only real friend Adam breaks things off with Hades which leads to a big fight between the two and they don't interact at all after that

So not long after this Adam's curse comes into play and we all know what happens there BUT- in my AU the setup is a bit different

So first off in my AU the enchantress who cursed Adam was really Aphrodite in disguise, why did she do it?

Orders from Zeus when he heard how Adam had broken his brother's heart, because he cares about his brother? Not really, but it was in his eyes a valid excuse to play a cruel trick on the prince

Now the plan was originally to just turn Adam into a mindless beast for all eternity because gods usually aren't for second chances (unless it's Hera with Zeus's cheatings... for ZEUS the mortals never get second chances even when it's almost NEVER their fault)

When Hades hears about this however he's horrified, yes he's angry and hurt but he never wanted THIS

So he uses his own powers to soften the curse into what we know in BATB (yes it doesn't match with the continuity but when has Descendants ever cared about continuity?)

After this Hades decides he is done watching his family treat the mortals like their little toys they can make and break however they want and this is what leads him to plan the takeover off Olympus

We all know the story of Hercules and BATB so yeah-

NOW skip to the end of D3

Hades and Adam get to talk with each other and (I am resisting the urge of my vision of them singing "For good" from Wicked-) it ends with them being somewhat friends but Hades does not want to bring up anything about their old relationship since Adam is married and he crashed and burned with Maleficent

HOWEVER- Adam cannot stop thinking about him, back when he was young and Gaston convinced him to break up with Hades he used the argument that Adam didn't know what real love was and real love couldn't be between two men

But now that he's been with Belle for so long and knows what true love feels like he knows what Hades and he had- it was real.

He felt like he feels with Belle but... maybe just a bit different

He tells Belle all about this because she's his wife and she's always been the smart one in their relationship

Belle is very amused but slightly concerned about her husband's history but- this is Mal's father who saved Audrey's life

So she agrees for the three of them to sit down and have a more- deeper talk about their relationship

Long story short it ends in a throupple because if Adam and Hades are a thing post D3 Belle will ALWAYS be a part of that relationship and now I shall dump some headcanons on you

Ben fucking fainted when they told him and Mal wanted to bash her father's head in

Adam becomes a flustered mess whenever Hades scoops him up because he's not used to that kind of affection since Belle's not strong enough to carry him

Belle and Hades can both calm Adam down whenever his temper acts up in different ways, Belle talks him down- Hades matches his temper

The three of them read together all the time with Hades- mainly just telling the other two stories of all the shit his siblings have been causing over the years

Cuddle time is the best for all three of them, though Hades would never admit it

i think it’s a little bit of a stretch to say that sandor is in love with sansa? like, he’s definitely attracted to her! but we don’t have enough material to label his feelings as "love"…

indeed we don't have enough material to state such a thing for certain. and i believe that what both sansa and sandor feel for each other right now hasn't quite matured into our notions of "love" because neither were in the right headspace to think of each other in a self-acknowledged romantic way, with sansa still being a child living in difficult circumstances and sandor having a lot of issues of his own to deal with. however, it's known that their dynamic is meant to play heavily into the beauty & the beast motif, with sansa as the beauty that inspires sandor who's been animalized his entire life into making himself a man again. if the batb trope being romantic in nature isn't enough, sansa and sandor's dynamic on its own also has romantic elements that one can't simply ignore: the cloaking symbolism which is the most important element of wedding ceremonies in westeros, or the fact that sansa remembers a kiss between her and sandor that never happened, or that she sometimes likes to compare men around her with sandor as if he is the standard, or even that sandor is the person with whom sansa has some of her most emotionally charged interactions. as to sandor, well, we don't have access to his thoughts but we know that sansa has made a great impact in his life, she helped him come to the realization that he deserved dignity, that there were things worth fighting for in the world other than himself. in the arya chapters that he appears in asos it's quite clear how much sansa is often on his mind in the way that he's always talking about her. even his dying thoughts are about her so...

is sandor in love with sansa? not quite, yet. at least i think he hasn't rationalized his current feelings for her as "love" with a capital L. his memories of her are too riddled with guilt for him to think of anything beyond how much he failed her in king's landing. but the seeds have been planted. it's undeniable that his knowing her has shifted the course of his entire life, and i've said before that he had a sense of devotion to sansa that he never had for anyone else, not even joffrey. so considering all the mutual impact that sandor and sansa had on each other, and the romantic trope that their dynamic is meant to play into, all that's left for us is to wonder if the author plans on doing something with that. maybe they'll reunite and their relationship will fully develop into romantic love, maybe they never meet again and sansa will only have the memory of his protection and a kiss that never happened to hold on to. i guess we'll see.

I haven't seen the animated movie since I was a small child, never watched the 2017 one, and my most recent interaction with batb is the musical production I'm currently in. I half plan to re-watch/watch the movies but. we'll see. so yeah.

I believe she has stated the switch from Tamlin to Rhys was always planned but I'm with you it was too...sudden. Or if she did plan it the execution was terrible. Tamlin goes from a relatively nice guy to raging asshole and misogynist who's abusive and Rhys goes from a morally ambiguous bordering to bad person to a great guy and sexy bad boy who's also a perfect partner.....like. Maybe if she kept Rhys as shitty it would have been interesting sort of a heroine corruption arc but as is it's whatever.

I just... can't buy it. And you know, if that's the truth, it's cool, it doesn't matter—if she's fudging it she has the right to do so. It's her work.

The thing is that if you're going to do the split, you have to hint that it's happening. It's not that I mind her switching, it's that I mind the switch involving a sudden character shift for BOTH guys. You have this mild BatB man become this insane controlling boyfriend, and Rhys becomes LESS INTERESTING because he's supposed to be a good boyfriend. I would've liked it so much more if that hadn't happened, especially with Rhys. Like? He was kinda pushy and pervy in the first book, and I was fine with it. He's supposed to be a darker figure!

One thing I love about Lothaire (and it's why Kresley Cole is a superior writer) is that Lothaire... falls in love. But he doesn't fundamentally change as a person. He begins as a villain, he ends as a villain. The novel ends on him doing another evil thing after kissing Ellie goodbye and bopping off to do it. But the difference is that he's madly in love and he will ONLY do the evil if she okays it. And while I wouldn't call her arc a FULL corruption arc, she certainly does compromise her morals. They have this agreement wherein she basically tells him he can't murder everyone, because "you can't bring them back if you kill them". She is tacitly okay with him imprisoning people, doing a mild torture, whatever. She WANTS him to be king. She believes he's the best one for the job, even though he's clearly batshit (and maybe he is?), and she clearly adapts to being his queen extremely well.

Lothaire will not do it if Ellie tells him not do it. But it's not because he's a better person. It's because he's IN LOVE. And perhaps being in love has made it easier for him to have friends and care about other people. But his ultimate priority is Ellie (he tells her "you are everything" and that's it). He's a little better, but he's still evil. He's just evil with a wife he will do anything to keep, even if it means grumbling and bending to her will.

That? Is how you write a villain hero. It's morality chain. And I love it, but it's very rarely done well.

sean mckeever: FRESH HELL <3 literally THE rose book. also tt03 #57 slayed. he ALMOST gets knocked down on the list because a) the fucking shitshow that was terror titans and b) he backtracked on like 3 different character arcs as soon as he started writing tt and it pisses me off. but he redeemed himself with fresh hell

geoff johns: i hate johns so much. but he solidified sooo much about rose as a character that he has pretty much the definitive rose. what he did completely defined rose's relationship with her father and her attitude towards the titans/being a hero in general. whether they realize it or not, every rose writer after johns is writing his version of her. as much as i hate him he is one of the best rose writers and i will stand by that

christopher priest: i have not made it a secret that i love ds16. there are some aspects of his characterization that i dont agree with but for the most part he killed it tbh. hating her dad but still coming back to him, loving her brother but still keeping him at arms length, HOSUN!!! HER HMONG FAMILY!!!!!!! ily priest

ed brisson: SLAY. the only reason he's not higher is because i dont like the fact in general that she chose to be on stormwatch (she would not do that), and he used baby rose in ktr and didnt even mention lili (and DID mention that foster family. im still mad). other than that!!! everything about her struggle to be a good person in batb was soooo good, and so much about ktr was so good for her <3 thank u mr brisson

marv wolfman: i feel a little bad not ranking him higher given that. he created rose. but she doesnt really do much in the issues he writes. which is fair given that she was a new character that was just made to hang around on the sidelines at the time, so theres not a lot to judge in his writing. but he definitely laid the foundation that johns expanded on, and he was the one that made her so uh thnx marv

jt krul: i wish he had gotten more time :( i wish he had gotten to do whatever he was planning with lili, i wish we could've gotten to see more of his rose. his rose was def a different take than before given that she was more... mellowed out ig? it was a lot more lighthearted, just her hanging out with the team, being an older sister to damian (<3), and looking for her mom. hes not my fav just because i like it when shes a crazy bitch instead of a normal girl, but i completely understand why people like his rose. not to mention tt03 #77-78 slays so unbelievably hard

jay faerber: NANNY ROSE <33333 i love love love rose in titans 99 <3 this version of rose is DRASTICALLY different than any other rose, which is the reason hes in the bottom half, but i like it in the sense that its nice to know that she was just hanging out in between the two worst things to ever happen to her (her mom dying & slade drugging her). rose with roy and lian lives rent free in my head every single day of my life i love it so much, also that issue with rose & toni was so fun. titans 99 rose you will always be famous

adam beechen: he is going to hell for what he did to cass but for rose? he was fine. he helped with that one really good wilson family arc (tt03 #43-46), and wrote the only pre-52 rose & jason interaction (#47) so he gets points for that. and batgirl 2008 was pretty good for rose. but unfortunately he just didnt make enough of an impact on me to be ranked any higher

matthew rosenberg: unfortunately im mentally ill so i have a detailed explanation of what i think of rosenberg's rose but the short version is: i like him, he writes a good rose. its fun, shes well-written for the most part, but there are some :/ parts about it to me. i think if he continues writing her he'd be ranked higher but for now hes sitting pretty near the bottom of the list

devin grayson: i used to really like devin grayson's rose but. i have since changed my mind. it doesnt feel like rose. this is NOT the rose that stabbed her eye out because she thought slade was disappointed in her! shes too Quirky Girl here even though this is theoretically during the period where shes being drugged (honestly. i dont think grayson actually knew about the super soldier serum. and if she did it does not show) and we've seen rose in this era in tt03 and bg00, and this arc does not read as the same character at all. it was a good arc for her, and she had a lot of good moments here! but the characterization overall wasnt great

joshua williamson: i won't go on a whole tangent about the way williamson writes but. he has no sense of character voice, his characters all feel like blank slates to get the plot across, there are no character decisions being made besides what's needed for the plot. theres not a lot that i can put my finger on and say that its bad, but there are so few choices being made that its hard to say anything about his rose. to put a completely different character in rose's place in robin 2021, all you'd have to do is switch a few words around. williamson uses a vague idea of who a character is to guide what he wants them to do, and all his characters come out shallow. his rose wasnt BAD but it wasnt good at all

13 Books

Right, I was tagged by @old-man-ghost a few days ago and I'm finally getting around to doing this!

1: The last book I read: Disney Princess: Beyond the Tiara, which was an interesting look at the involved films and their impact. It was self-congratulatory at places, but I think that's the trade-off for it being an official book.

2: A Book I recommend: Dinotopia by James Gurney, between the gorgeous art, the inventive world-building, and the great characters. The franchise as a whole is one of my favorites, but this is the book that started it all.

3: A book that I couldn't put down: I read the first nine a while back, but I really enjoyed the first volume of Spy x Family. I need to get around to reading the tenth & eleventh volumes.

5: A book on my TBR: In addition to the aforementioned duo and quite a few other books, I'm waiting until I'm further into The Librarians as a show before I read the 3 tie-in novels.

6: A book I've put down: This isn't probably what's meant, but it's the only recent example. Over a month ago, I checked out The Secret Life of the American Musical from the library specifically to just skim it to get a clearer grasp of the different types of songs in Broadway musicals. Though I did spot its section acknowledging the issues of relying on star power for musicals, which seems relevant to what went on with the Sweeney Todd revival.

7: A book on my wish list: This one is kinda silly, but I am curious about Ash's Atlas, it's just that I've been reluctant to seriously look into getting it because I know it's very likely not be a pseudo-guidebook, and more likely just acts to recap anime events. I'd like a Pokémon book that does more with discussing the geography, history, man-built places, & notable people.

8: A favorite book from childhood: I'm going to go for Midnight for Charlie Bone, the first in the Children of the Red King series. I didn't get to read them all as a kid, but the first few I definitely did. I still have a soft spot for this series, though the older I get the more I wish for a perspective flip novel(s) showing what the adults were getting up to, as it's very clear that they're getting up to stuff off-page in addition to what Charlie and his friends see. I'm definitely anxious about how the potential upcoming TV adaptation will turn out.

9: A book you would give to a friend: Hmm, it would depend on the friend's tastes. Maybe I'd be selfish and give them the Project Gutenberg link to Once on a Time just so I'd have someone to talk about it with. It's one of my favorite books (it definitely can be seen as a precursor to The Princess Bride and Galavant).

10: The most books you own by a single author: It's probably a toss-up between Tamora Pierce and Rick Riordan. Both of them are well into the double digits.

11: A nonfiction book you own: I have Team of Rivals, which is a really interesting look at how Abraham Lincoln got elected and then turned the other candidates into his cabinet during the Civil War.

12: What are you currently reading: I've only read the prologue to the Belle Mirrorverse manga, but I liked it. I'm pretty much just here for the BATB content (as seen by me currently having Funko Belle as my icon), as I didn't play the game for long. This says more about my minimal gaming skills than the game itself (no, seriously, I struggle with LEGO & Pokémon at times). I am curious how this altered story will play out.

13: What are you planning on reading next: I still need to reread Sense and Sensibility, especially as I keep meaning to locate the new movie (I like the gifs I've seen, I just need to find the time/energy to figure out how to temporarily get Hallmark access so I can watch it).

I'm on desktop at the moment and don't have a readily accessible current photo of any of my bookshelves. I'll try to remember to do something later and add it in a reblog when I'm on my phone.

Weekly update July 19, 2024

Another week of artfight, I’m slowing down pretty hard now and I feel awful about it. I tried to get some health stuff in a row this week but I still feel awful. I’m trying to get other stuff done, though.

Artfight: I still have a bunch of sketches on backlog, I’m going to finish up revenges first, maybe tonight but probably not. A few other random attacks as well, I might play around with styles some more. I want to try more paining-style pieces, and have an idea for what to try but need to find fitting characters.

Music: music is so fun to work on, even though I don’t have too much to show at the moment. I have an instrumental ambient piece ready, and as soon as artfight is done priority number one will be a visual to go with it. Also dug up one of my older instrumental WIPs and picked out some instruments to finish it up, just need to record melodies. Also touched up OEB some more, and fiddled with some amp sim programs. Guitar Rig 7 is good for beginners but Tonocracy has been winning me over. Big thing was playing with drums some more. Before I was using all the drums in a kit together instead of mixing and matching like you’re supposed to, but I tried playing some more this week and it’s so much better. Hoping future pieces will sound better. I’ll try to get a VPR for RR done this weekend, and start re-editing BATB.

On the topic of guitar stuff, I’m planning to spend tonight trying to see how much I retained from those couple months of lessons earlier in the year, and then attend an open house thing tomorrow to see if I need more. I’m not sure if there’s more that I need to get taught, or if the only thing bottlenecking me is just memorizing the chords and building dexterity. I don’t know if I’ll be good enough to record for my actual music yet or not but I’ll get there eventually.

Comic is also moving slowly, as predicted. Again I’ll probably go buck wild on that in August, but for now Artfight is a higher priority. Epithet TTRPG and OEBvideo are also going kinda slowly, Epithet because I’m bottlenecked on statblocks and OEB because I’m bottlenecked on time. I can try chipping at statblocks at work when I’m tired of drawing, but that relies on where I’m being put. This week I had a lot of actual work to do, but it seems like it’s leveling off again. Really I should put together more of a schedule for next week, if I try to do that it’ll be Sunday.

Original or Remake pt3: Summary

The stories we tackled this time were Freaky Friday (2x), Lady and the Tramp, Pinocchio, A Christmas Carol, The Absent-Minded Professor/Flubber, and Beauty and the Beast.

Thank you to everyone who voted in the polls, shared and liked the polls, and added their own personal accounts! Below is a bit more detailed de-brief of the seven polls.

Getting it out of the way: the Absent-Minded Professor/Flubber poll received the least number of votes in the whole series (75). Along with the first Freaky Friday poll, they are the only polls who received less than 100 votes. The moral of the story: go watch them!

(Side note: The Absent-Minded Professor didn't even stand a chance in it's poll... the pain! the betrayal! oh the poor childhood memories!)

Just as with the Jungle Book polls, we had intended a third Freaky Friday poll, but it was clear which was the favorite again.

Another interesting structural detail were the three-way poll; the Pinocchios and the A Christmas Carols versions. We found three movies for each story and had to rework the answers to keep from overwhelming and also allowing mixed feelings. This is why both were in the final group.

As it turns out, the animated versions of A Christmas Carol were the only animated movies to not win it's version--even when adding the support of both together. A testament to the power of The Muppets (and Michael Caine)!

Excitingly there is Lady and the Tramp! LatT was interesting to us watching. The few comments made us think there would be more support for the live action. Instead it joined the ranks of great overwhelming love for the Animated (+90%). Perhaps more people just need to take a chance on it? We do have it on good authority: Janelle Monae as Peg ate. @3y3-see-you

Finally, when it comes to BatB, the Animated won along the vein of others like Peter Pan. However, the commentary of the alternations to the story and the production made it seem like the Live Action had had the potential to fall with Alice or Cinderella. We were also a little surprised the stage production had only one vote.

Perhaps at another time we will evaluate all three parts. There are 21 polls to look through. We are not planning to do anymore as we believe we have polled all the original and remakes.

i had a few questions i was wondering :

-at the end of beauty and the beast during the spring dance, do you hc that being a time skip to belle and adams wedding, or just it being a celebratory dance?

-do you think the french revolution happened in that universe since it was the time period? if so what would you think happened?

-what year (if you have an exact year hc) do you think adam and belle got married? my main question is just about the french revolution really to see if you think it’d still happen ?? like i think the monarchy ended 1792 so do you think their story is before that?

I LOVE MORE QUESTIONS YIPPEE!!!!!

1. no no no yeah that’s just a celebration ball!!! i am very adamant that that is NOT their wedding!!!!! here are my reasons for why it is not their wedding:

belle looking curiously at adam’s face and asking “how would you feel about growing a beard?” very clearly indicates that things are still NEW. she’s teasing obviously but like, clearly she’s still getting used to his human face!! that’s an odd thing to say if there’s been a time skip and a whole courtship, engagement, and wedding planned. believe me, by THAT point, she’s well acquainted with that human face of his!

all the women are wearing white dresses, not just belle!! and, in fact, belle’s is the LEAST wedding-like of all the white dresses there. if you look at what everyone is wearing, the fashion theme seems almost entirely back suits & white dresses. with the exceptions of adam, cogsworth, and lumiere, who are dressed in Their Colors™️ to intentionally make them stand out. (and of course madame de garderobe, because she’s a fashion goddess and cannot be contained by simple themes and aesthetics🤌✨)

on that note, kind of, neither adam nor belle are wearing wedding rings! they are both wearing rings but belle’s just wearing the pinky one she’s had the whole time, and adam’s is on his index finger and is huge and obviously not a wedding ring, lol.

the only people AT this ball are the castle residents and the villagers. basically all the villeneuve citizens. very much implying that it’s a local celebration. if the PRINCE was getting married, wouldn’t the wedding be a LOT bigger? (oh hey check out my recent fic set at their wedding!!! hehehe). AND in the script, it describes the setting with “the entire village celebrates” — and nothing more. to me, if this was intended to be their wedding, it would have been more specified.

and this last points means the least to me because the adaptations are very different in my head, but it’s worth noting that batb 1991 doesn’t end with their wedding either! so no reason to think that that’s changed.

OH and i forgot to add, but to me, i think that celebration ball takes place about a week after the curse is lifted!! they’re so excited to celebrate, and adam, all high on freedom and true love, even suggests that they should just do it tomorrow!! but cogsworth BEGS to have just a MOMENT to be able to properly plan it. PLEASE. so they settle for in one week’s time, we’ll all celebrate properly ✨

and belle makes her silly inquiry about his facial hair because it’s the first time they’re all dressed up together, post-everything, but also because, like i said, she’s still getting used to his face! she hasn’t spent every waking moment with him yet, as i think maurice would want her to come home just a Little Bit. the courting phase is kind of interesting for her, because i think she does spend a lot of her time at the castle, but i also think she wouldn’t just Stop living at home with maurice completely. they’re very bonded!! and, in her mind, she was apart from him for a WHILE. but now i’m rambling waaayyy to much. i can get more into that on another ask, if you want sjdksjd. but my point here is, that celebration ball is 100% very new, and 10000% NOT their wedding 💐

2. hahaha no i actually like to think that this is an alternate reality where adam & belle are such a fantastic king & queen that the people are happy and don’t revolt, LMAO. but hey, i majored in history, i know reality is rough. that’s why in fiction it’s very lovely and happyyyy🥰!! i only like royalty in fiction, it is WILDLY messy in real life. (which is still fun to study sometimes, but absolutely horrendous to witness) AND IM NOT LETTING MY BABIES GET GUILLOTINED OKAY!!!

3. yes i actually have made a very detailed timeline with years and dates and such. which shouldn’t be a surprise to you by now, lol, but YEAH. so, many years ago, before i knew more, i decided that the movie would be set in 1740 — purely for the reason that the first french iteration of the story, “la belle et la bête” was written by gabrielle-suzanne barbot de villeneuve in 1740! so i was like, that’s good enough for me!!! i have since learned that batb 1991 was actually most closely adapted from the second french iteration, same title of course, by jean-marie de beaumont in 1756!! so i do admit that if i had known all of this seven years ago, i probably would have made the movie set in ‘56! BUT! i did not, and my timeline is soooo deeply detailed now and, truthfully, it Doesn’t Matter At All, because the disney story is still quite removed from the 18th century books, so you can literally do whatever you want! and it’s okay! (also 1740 is such a nice round number to figure stuff out from😭, i love it) and i mean, i think a lot of people have guessed (based on wardrobe?) that the 1991 film is set in like the 1780s. which is fine too! truly go off, there’s no proof of the year within the movie, and i don’t trust historical accuracy with wardrobe in films basically ever, so it really is up to you!

but yes, for me, my timeline begins in june of 1740. they get married on september 24th, 1740. they’re officially coronated king & queen in january 1741. their first child is born april 6th, 1742, and so on and so forth… i looooooove my timeline very very much. any of the landmark years pop up in my life and i’m like HEY!!!🫵 but anyway i love the details of my timeline, sometimes i really do feel like they’re a real royal family in actual history and that i could give full lectures teaching about their era. their love story!!!

so yeah! i’ll say this, as a last fun little note, that i DO still honor the 1756 book by using the author’s last name, beaumont, as adam’s family name! his family is the royal house of beaumont, in my world. at the actual time, it was bourbon, and then napoleon, of course! but here it is beaumont 💙✨
