I mean, that's also kind of assuming that you've upset some previously unidentified cultural norm through ignorance rather than affect. ND kids also frequently have the experience of enjoying something normative *in the wrong way* and being rebuked for how they express their interest rather than for simply having the interest ("other 8-13 year old girls like cats, I like cats, why is it that when I subscribe to a magazine about cats or draw cats or read books about cats or talk about cats, I'm doing it wrong? I can't really tell, I guess I'll stop doing those things where people can see them because as far as I can see, only common denominator causing friction is me")

In my experience the problem isn't that you can't see the system or can't predict the rules, it's that you may learn early that people react negatively to the way that you enjoy things, so to seem normal you either stop letting yourself enjoy things or you don't engage with things you enjoy in order to avoid social sanction.

The reflex to pause before sharing an interest or to prevent yourself from reacting to the interest where you might bother other people with the interest is the source of the alienation described in the initial tweet.

"You have to learn the system but it might require thinking about some unpleasant things" just kind of sounds like "you have to lean that people don't like how you act when you are happy, so you should figure out how to act less like yourself when you're happy, or be happy less around people." It's the correct answer to reduce bullying and have a better social fit, and it also is pretty exhausting and awful for your mental health.

I don't know that there's an "answer" here per se, but "neurodivergent kids often develop maladaptive coping strategies with high long-term emotional costs (which we can all agree sucks for them but which may not actually be a preventable issue given the nature of humans as social apes) and may benefit from unpacking that in supportive environments as adults" doesn't seem terribly controversial.

@discoursedrome I guess OP has me blocked, but a common (Though not, of course, universal) experience growing up autistic is *generally not understanding* why some things you enjoy are fine and some will cause your peers to mock, belittle, or occasionally physically attack you.

I remember being in grade school and generally not understanding why it was okay to talk about what I liked about teenage mutant ninja turtles, but if I talked about my little pony the other kids would make fun of me.

Why is playing on the monkey bars during recess okay but sitting and watching some ants makes it okay for other kids to make fun of me.

I've talked to other people about how they figured this stuff out and the constant refrain was "Oh, you just know".

As for adults, the attitude was essentially "It's bad that the other kids do this but nobody can stop it so you have to figure out how to stop provoking the other kids"

The way to do this, of course, is a studied, placid, anonymity.

You don't see the pattern in *which* expressions of genuine enthusiasm provoke retaliation, so *all of them* begin to feel dangerous, the best way to protect yourself is to simply wait until somebody else has voiced an opinion and proved it safe, and then follow that.

I have no doubt that an allistic child attending school in a setting where the vast majority of students and adults were on the autism spectrum would have similar feelings of misalignment and confusion, but that's not something that generally happens during the formative years of allistic people.

stan would DEFINITELY let her host tea parties and sit on a tiny chair sipping imaginary tea while his daughter pours another to a teddy bear besides him AND AFTER he'd let her paint his nails all messy and colorful. he'd treat her like he'd treat mabel and would say (in reference to that one appreciation post) "now that's my girl." first of all anon, idk why this was sitting in my drafts and honestly i don’t know what’s happening with my tumblr lately because i just noticed there’s some asks in drafts that weren’t even posted, even though i clearly remember putting them on a timer... i... idk if i’m just that old that i can’t figure out how to use this app anymore or what.

anyways, i don’t know if you’ll even see this since this ask is kinda old now, but let me just tell you, this is absolutely beautiful, adorable, and the most fluffy take i’ve ever seen about Ford & Stan being dads. thank you so much for sending it to me because honestly it’s so lonely out here.

yes yes to all of this. i’m sure their kids would grow up so happy, so loved, because those two would go above and beyond to make sure their daughter had every ounce of joy and affection she deserved. they will follow the rule of “im gonna be better than what i had” i need to believe they’d pour everything into fatherhood because they finally have a chance to give smth soft

and god, i wanna point out this “introducing her boyfriend to stan and stan's all protective and showing the boyfriend a glimpse of his brass knuckle as a warning when daughter wasn't looking” i teared up because that’s exactly what Stan Pines would do. “break her heart and i’ll break your jaw” and that’s all. it's just he loves hard and he’d rather die than let someone hurt his girl. she’s his world & his soft spot.

also yes. tea parties. tiny chairs. paint on his nails and stickers on his forehead and the worst braided pigtails of all time. and he’d love every second. and bedtime, he’d try so hard to do a normal one, like “once upon a time blah blah blah” but it turns into full mystery shack tour monologues with dramatic reenactments and voices and sound effects and the kid is screaming with laughter and he’s beaming because she’s his whole universe. and then once she’s asleep, tucked in and kissed on the forehead, you grab his hand like, “babe. can we have another?” and he’s already halfway out the door to buy a second crib.

+ he brags about his daughter to literally everyone. someone in line at the store says “cute kid” and he’s like “yeah? she read a whole book to me last night. chapter book. five years old. genius. get wrecked” he’d be so proud.

“that’s my girl” is his whole personality. he keeps her macaroni art in his wallet. framed her preschool finger painting. wears her friendship bracelet till it falls apart. cries when she graduates kindergarten

and Stan would be the kind of dad to teach her how to throw a punch, because he wants her to feel strong, wants her to be able to stand up for herself. and when she starts having crushes, he tells her “as long as they treat you right. but if they don’t. . .i know people.” and she laughs but she also believes him. and you do too

FORD. girl dad ford is.... it’s too much. like. i love him carefully assembling little necklaces or rings with alien gems and portal crystals, fuck fuck fuck it's so cute, muttering the science behind each one while handing them to his daughter with trembling hands and saying “this is a protective charm. promise me you’ll wear it. always.” just him trying to give her safety he never had. and she’s like “okay dad! it’s so sparkly!” and he almost cries.

Ford would study how to be a dad. he’d read a dozen parenting books and still feel like he’s messing everything up, until his daughter runs into his lab with glitter on her face and asks him to help her build a solar-powered hamster house. and he drops everything. he’d absolutely buy her a telescope. give her a fossil from another dimension and be like “this species is extinct. you’re the only one who owns one!!” he’s always finding these bizarre tokens from his past to make her feel special and loved

and you know he’s the kind of dad to tear up at weird moments. like he’s watching her braid a doll’s hair and he suddenly gets so emotional about it, and now he’s crying into your shoulder “she’s gonna grow up and forget this moment but i won’t. i’ll never forget”

AND YES. THE HAND TURKEYS. SHE’S DRAWING ON HIS SIX-FINGERED HAND AND IT’S THE COOLEST THING IN THE WORLD. and he’s sitting there trying to hide how emotional he is because she’s not afraid of it, not making fun, just saying “dad your hand’s perfect for this! one more finger means even more space for my drawings“ you walk in and he’s got glitter marker on his cheek and tears in his eyes

and yeah. if her boyfriend shows up one day, Ford’s sitting at the table with a mug in hand and a concealed weapon somewhere in his coat, just staring, letting the boyfriend feel the weight of all six eyes on him. because if Stan’s the brass knuckles threat, Ford’s the cold, i’ll erase you from time if you hurt her threat. and i love that. i love both kinds

Sonic AU August Day 1: Ready, Set, Go!

Here's my piece for @sonic-au-august and right off the bat, I knew I had to draw the abandoned Eggman base Sonic and Tails explore out of pure boredom before everything went completely wrong. Okay it's actually the 2nd for me rn and I really gotta sleep, but with the power of timezones—!

Also I drew my first outdoor background in over a year! :D Genuinely proud of this one.

For those of you seeing my Sonic AU for the first time, this is "The Ultimate Parasitic Life Form: That Freak of Nature" AKA "That Freak of Nature" AKA "TFoN AU". Don't...worry about the title. I usually don't even refer to it by its full title anymore, but I'm also too used to it existing to change it. The last two are usually what I use.

This is a horror AU which I find easiest to explain as "Venom but Sonic, and a lot more horrifying." Contains parasitic alien Doom Morph Shadow.

This AU is basically about Sonic getting infested/partially possessed by an alien of unknown origin that was living in one of the Doctor's old bases, and then figuring out how to continue living his life as usual with a bloodthirsty alien stuck in his head which is also changing him in fairly distressing ways the longer it stays there.

For every submission that I post that has written context in the fic that I've made for this AU (which you can get to by finding the AO3 link in my pinned post), I'll post a snippet or two below.

It didn't take long to get there [the old base], and when they did, they and to stand there for a moment to take the sight in. "This place is much bigger than I thought it was..." Sonic stated. The base was absolutely massive, appearing to touch the pale-blue sky from his perspective. It was overrun with plants reclaiming the area as their own, making the outside of the facility look like some of those design concepts for merging man-made city skyscrapers with greenery. If only that's what Eggman actually wanted out of the world instead of schemes for world domination. "...And a lot more run-down," he finished. "I don't know why I didn't expect that."

❥ So I actually had a really hard time choosing between Edward and Jiro for your most suitable match but as I read over what you look for in a relationship, I figured that Edward better suited you. You provided a list of qualities that you look for in a partner, such as being quick witted and a fast learner, and while you said they only needed to possess one of those traits, I thought Ed displayed more of these qualities than Jiro. Jiro is definitely a close runner up though so I could also see a lot of potential between you guys as well. 

❥ Anywho though, you got good old Ed and given that he’s hundreds of years old, he’s had his fair share of romantic experience and encountered tons of faces. Sometimes—or rather, oftentimes— it’s as though he’s met the exact same person, just with a different face. It’s easy for him to lump together a lot of the people he’s met in his prolonged lifetime, so you’d have to really stand out to grab his attention. He’s used to encountering people with the same small-minded perspective of the world, so someone who’s a bit more complex grabs his attention. Someone you can’t really describe in one word piques his interest, and I think you fit that description. 

❥ You’re the type of person who adjusts based on what the other person is like, so it’s a bit difficult to describe what you’re really like but one thing's for certain, you’re very perceptive, intelligent, and rebellious. You’re driven by a desire to end injustice and you’re the type of person who won’t let go until you’ve accomplished what it is you’ve set out for. You challenge authority despite everything the world tries to condition you to think, which is something Ed isn’t used to seeing. Stubborn, but I think it would be this very quality of yours that intrigues Edward along with your sharp intellect. From the start, Edward would toy around with you, seeing you just like every other human. However, it would be your mind and perspectives that draw him to you. The way you seek out justice and fairness and don’t stop until you’ve gotten what you wanted. ❥ It would be your mind that captivates Edward. Despite being hundreds of years old, you offer him insight that he’s never seen in any other human. On top of that, you’re very intelligent, both in more academic settings (like science or the arts) and emotional matters. You have a knack for understanding the emotions of others, but you also seem to have a good grasp on your own emotions. You feel them very deeply and even see them as a very you thing. Despite your tendency to conceal your emotions, Edward would notice. He’s described himself as having an almost “sixth sense” and his ability to read others is incredible. He’s the type who will notice when you hide things and bring it up, but he’s also wise enough to know when to not pry (at least when it’s not appropriate). Something that comes with age is wisdom and emotional intelligence, so he’ll notice the thoughts and feelings you don’t express out loud and will or won’t ask about it depending on if the time feels right. 

❥ Now Edward is a total wild card and this will apply to your relationship as well. Given how old he is, he has years worth of wisdom up his belt and his extent of knowledge about anomalies goes beyond what humans know. He’s very intelligent in many different ways and a quick learner, so you can have your fair share of more intellectual conversations where he applies everything he knows. However, looks and title are definitely deceiving in Edward’s case because as mysterious and powerful as he’s made out to be, he’s also very apathetic and spontaneous. He’s not exactly the mysterious vampire that everyone makes him out to be, he likes to lay back and relax. He enjoys youtube videos and rotting away in his room, so he doesn’t quite live up to the image everyone has of him. But he can also be a bit of a tease at times, so banter would happen a lot between the two of you. Now Edward has been alive for hundreds of years, when it comes to what he’s about he’s not into that backpacking in Europe crap. He’s very comfortable with himself (maybe a bit too comfortable) and he knows what he likes. As weird or off putting as he can be sometimes, that just goes to show how authentic and unapologetically himself he is. He shows up as himself with absolutely no shame. 

❥ Dating Ed would come with a lot of quality time, mostly spent in the Obscuary dorms. He’s a total homebody so he’d prefer spending time with you indoors, plus a vampire in the sunlight is a big no-no. Although if you guys do happen to go out in the daylight, he’d bring his parasol with him. Since he is a vampire, he’s aware of the difference in life span between the two of you so he’d try to spend as much time with you as possible. You guys could be watching youtube videos together, playing tabletop RPGs with each other, or just doing your own thing and it’ll satisfy Ed. I could also see some physical touch with Ed, but he’s not overly cuddly or anything in the same way Towa would be. 

❥ Since you’re interested in history, specifically Eastern European history, you’re in luck because Ed quite literally lived through those events! Prior to coming to Japan, Ed lived in an Eastern European country that borders the sea for god knows how long so he’s a great asset when studying history. Honestly though, he might tease you or just be an asshole before answering some of your questions. He might act like he forgot what happened (and maybe he did depending on what it is you ask) or stall answering your question just to get a reaction out of you, but he can still be a good asset to your research. Edward has lived centuries and watched the trending fashion styles change, so he’s not particularly interested in fashion himself but I think he’d grow used to your distinct style. Especially since it’s your form of self expression.

❥ And dating Edward is… something else. He has some very interesting date ideas. Not that he ever leaves the Obscuary mansion much, but date ideas would be in the forest surrounding the Obscuary mansion and maybe the garden too. Courtesy of Rui, there’s a ton of plants there and based on your aesthetic blog, I could tell you really like plants, specifically flowers. Ed doesn’t leave the mansion much but when he does, it’s usually to explore and find a napping spot outside. Other dates would be exploring the woods surrounding the mansion. Those woods are vast and there’s a lot to explore, so there’s always something to look at. Honestly? He’s probably the type to joke about having dates in a cemetery or abandoned buildings. You'd think that with all his experience, he'd be much more romantic but no, he's very off putting.

Like you, he’s also very knowledgeable when it comes to science and the medical field so you two share common interests right off the bat. (that’s what he tells himself) But still, you’re very well informed so he’d like having you over in the Mortkranken lab. He’d show you all the specimens and equipment that has accumulated in the lab over time while explaining the properties and function of everything; He likes to feel smart! Sometimes, Jiro will butt in and add more elaboration to which Yuri will bark at him to back off, but the Mortkranken lab is very interesting. If you ever confront him about this, there’s a chance he’ll either fumble and try to deny it or he’ll act like it’s a privilege that he’s looking out for you. Very silly man.

Hi!! I just wanted to say that the way you draw characters/use colors in your art is an absolute dream, I've never seen anything prettier. Do you have a specific way you pick/use colors, or any advice for coloring? You inspire my art so much, and I'd love to learn how to color like you someday :)

aaaah thank you so much I'm really honoured to hear you both like it and that it inspires you anon !! ;v; I don't actually know much about art theory-wise, aside from very basic colour theory that I always forget so most of my choices are pretty instinctual and based on my own preferences!

i can do my best to explain my thought process though! uuh it is. lots of text though just as a warning.

one thing I tend to do with almost everything is pick what kind of colour mood I'm going for! usually, since I love orange and also warm feelings, I'll aim for some kind of warm tone and when doing that I try to slide every colour I pick towards the warm end of the colour wheel. Blacks and whites are especially good for this! As a general thing I almost fully avoid picking any colours along those edges of the colour picker

instead I'll move all my colour choices a nudge into the square for the colours towards the tone I want (in this case warm) (the white is there be warm too I just forgor to type it).

and since I wanted warm colours for this drawing I desaturated the blue of Brain's pants so it would fit in better. I once heard someone say you should always pick one main colour and saturate fully and the further away from it on the colour wheel you got, the more desaturated your colours should be. I don't really do that bc I like my colours to stay bright but I do keep it in mind to mess around with sometimes.

I'm not always great at keeping this consistent, but I think it usually makes for pretty decent results... Other things I keep in mind are that when I pick the colour for my shadows I always make a little slide on the colour wheel towards the opposite tone of what I based my main colours on. oh and picking the right base colours ?? no clue tbh I always put every colour on it's own layer and then I spend a couple minutes adjusting them all seperately until I feel like they go well enough together. I usually avoid the bottom to right section of the square fully, bc I find they often get oversaturated and muddy, but that's just a personal preference I guess.

also since I enjoy the way coloured lineart works for my stuff I tend to mess around with layer settings for my lineart! usually the end results will look something like this:

where the clipped layer is clipped on to my colours folder. lineart is the only place where I just use plain black since I'm gonna change it with these layer settings later. it often still shows up as black for darker colours (and especially blues?) but it keeps a slightly coloured edge that I enjoy. if the blacks of the end result don't look good, messing around with the layer opacity usually changes stuff up. sometimes I'll also erase part of the lineart from one of the layers as a way to adjust.

I think what might be more relevant though, is the way I've been picking my colours for most of my recent posts though, which is. very differently. and also quite dependant on the fact I've been drawing on Tegaki! Tegaki has a limited colour palette that looks like this

only the 6 colour slots next to the bottom greyscale can be replaced by your own colours. As shown here I only bothered to add something to half of them; mainly the beige-ish colour I like to use for whites, a brown that I never use bc it's ugly with everything else here and a purple? that I only Think I added. both the brown and purple suffer from being too desaturated for the rest of the palette, which makes them stand out in a pretty bad way when used tbh.

I have. absolutely no idea what I'm doing with colours on this site though ngl. I think it just automatically pushes you to be a little more chaotic with the choices? a simple example is the green I picked for Link's tunic here doesn't really have any good, easy choice for shading imo. most of the "darker" green tones just feel more saturated, and it sticks out pretty bad as a shading colour for the more muted green I picked for the tunic. Removing those, the choice was either a mossy green or a blue.

and while the mossy green is still green, it feels far too dark a shading colour compared to what I picked as shading for the rest of the drawing. The blue has the added bonus of being closer to the purple I used for the black-ish parts.

I think my point is that it's really easy to push yourself to make some fun new choices when the tools you're using limit you a bit in a way? Looking at it now, I'm also seeing that the hands were lined with very different colours. I remember just thinking that I couldn't be bothered to find the exact same purple I used for the first hand so I just went with the first thing I landed on, that being a pink. But now I think it works pretty well since the one hand is lifted a bit more into the light and that goes well for a bright colour like pink. happy accidents and all that right ?

I am fully just yapping at this point 🧍 but the point still goes for most things drawn on this site.

like there was no reason to add the blues or reds or pinks to the heather here but I only had so many purple shades to work with. it might be less realistic but I don't think it would've come out as well if I had stuck to only the purple shades from my reference photo.

This ended up way way too long and I have no idea if any of it made sense or was helpful at all, but it was surprisingly fun to reflect on my own choices a bit more! especially since I often just do whatever I feel like I think it's helpful to sit back and consider what instinct actually tells me it's the right thing to do.

in an attempt to do something actually helpful uuh I recommend messing around with 2 specific things and switching around with them a bit; namely limited colour palettes (like 1 or 2 main tones imo) and then just going absolutely ham and just using whatever colour for everything (make them orange! put some blue and purple on the bark! leaves can be blue if they want to! (go more ham than I did tbh))

I think just messing around does so much for making some kind of sense of colours even without Knowing how they work. it's easy to say we should all study, but personally I'm pretty bad at it and it's more fun to just trial and error it... errors do happen a lot though omg do they happen, but that's helpful for figuring stuff out too!
