Linix-Unix-BSD Laptop Journey~~ (and some questions again)
yet another question~~ tho up to my own musings and uncertainty at this point~~
I'm too afraid to try to install FreeBSD cause I'm worried I won't be able to dig up some needed internet info and that makes me feel dumb~~ is the Domain Name not the Hostname or name of the wifi? or would it be my ISP's website or something?
I like tech but not knowing this makes me feel stupid lol even though I'm probably not~~~ and that's just anxiety lying to me~~~
also is there any point in moving from Linux Mint Debian Edition 6 to Debian 11 disks that I have burned?
the only one with the zoom feature (unless I install something if I can find it) is the Cinnamon Desktop, and at that point I see no point on dropping Mint for pure Debian in that case....
need accessibility for my blind butt (despite also being stubborn and not using it half the time anyway lol)
ALSO none of the debian live CDs that I tried saw my WIFI and idk why~~ and they're all debian 11...
might need to download newer versions and burn them to disk I guess~~
or maybe if I installed one of them anyway, and actually hooked it to ethernet, then installed updates whether it would see my wifi then? idk
found a distro that doesn't use SystemD called PCLinuxOS and thought about giving that a try, but idk if it's good for someone like me, but I got a handle sort of on fedora back in the day.
So currently stuck on linux mint debian edition cause I'm afraid to give freebsd a try due to maybe not having the network information requited and idk where to find it~~ and cause debian just straight up wouldn't see my wifi~~ tho I've also said before in this post that idk if it's a good idea or not to go from linux mint debian, to straight debian.... cause I'm going to be stuck with the Cinnamon desktop anyway~~
like yesterday I spent all morning booting into all the debian live CDs that I had; except for the standard which I think is GNOME, and none of them could even SEE my wifi or ANY wifi
now I hate that I seem like the person that just wants things to work instead of tinker w stuff to get it to work, cause that's part of the fun and frustration of being on linux I suppose~~~ and I really hope I'm smart enough to figure stuff out~~
would be happy to eventually jump to a more unix like OS cause I believe the backbone of the internet is UNIX anyway~~ :)
I like to think I'm a nerd and a techie but at the same time think I'm stupid and don't know anything~~ if I'm being brutally honest w myself~~ but I guess you got to be feeling stupid to learn huh?
tldr; and making the questions more easily found~~ my journey through linux/bsd computer systems so far, and where I'm at....
Is it worth it to install pure debian if I'm already using linux mint debian (and the wifi actually works), should I get away from SystemD and try to install PCLinuxOS? or FreeBSD? am I smart enough to install FreeBSD? What network information do I need and where can I find it?
and yet another random question at the bottom cause I remembered a linux youtube channel where they talked about a bunch of stuff way back in the 2010s I think called "Jupiter Broadcasting" what happened to them?
wanted to go eventually to FreeBSD cause it's more unix like than linux, and i think more cohesive as a whole as opposed to bits and pieces mossaic'd together in linux.... also if it is more unix based, unix as far as I'm aware is the backbone of the internet if I'm remembering correctly~~ and I'd be happy to use it~~~
so idk what I'm doing~~ lol, stay on linux mint debian cause it works? try to get FreeBSD installed, try to find out how to fix debian not seeing my WIFI (I'd hoped that if I installed it and connected it to ethernet that updates would fix that), or install PCLinuxOS that I found? cause it looks neat~~~
more history about myself~~ as dumb as it sounds, or maybe not, my dad was into tech, he'd built his first computer and if it wasn't for him pirating some version of windows, we never would've had it, lol. but ye he was a techie, and he showed me the 1995 movie "hackers". I watched that on repeat through my teenage years for some reason~~ the music was good, and now I learnt that that's not actually bow hacking works, lol it's a cheesy film.... but that sparked an interest in technology and eventually led me to finding linux to begin with. and Unix~~ cause I thought it was something that my dad and I could do together~~~ but we never did...... but the techie interest stuck~~~~ I need to rewatch that film and find the soundtrack CDs I have~~~ been a while~~~~
second guessing it am I even smart enough to run anything other than linux mint anyway? probably yes but I doubt my own intelligence, lol. especially I think anyone irl I've shown my writing to or talked to say that I'm "smart as a whip" but I don't see it.... :(

'ENA: Dream BBQ Chapter 1 - "Release Date Trailer"'
[LIN / MAC / PC / STEAMOS] [WEB] [VIDEO, TRAILER] [2025]
"We originally wrote the script of the game separated by several stories and we think now releasing each one as a distinct chapter would be good for the artists on the team and the fans! "Lonely Door" will be the first chapter/episode for Dream BBQ. We don't have a solid release date yet, but we will keep you guys posted as we keep working on these chapters for the game. We already have made many cool things outside of Lonely Door and so subsequent chapters should be on its heels!" ~Joel G, ENA Day 2024

>Want to download a program >Windows version: "Click here to install!" >Mac version: "Click here to install!" >Scroll down to Linux version >"Here's a Github repository link!" Look all I'm saying is there is a reason Linux has struggled to become mainstream. I've given up on multiple native Linux versions of softwares and just got the windows version running through Wine now, lol. Shoutout to Krita for being easier than some of the other softwares I tried to get but also I'm pretty sure I still did something wrong because the icon isn't supposed to look like that and I can't lock it to my taksbar but it works so I'm just gonna not worry about it.
In spite of the annoyances I've encountered trying to adjust to Linux, I'm still loving it compared to Windows. The only sacrifice I regret is that my sick 3D dinosaur screensaver I paid $10 for a couple years ago won't run, even through Wine. :(

Stars I forgot how much installing Windows sucks ass
#chucking a temporary windows instance onto my pc for a lan party and holy shit I've been at this for no joke four hours by now#currently fully reinstalling bc some update apparently screwed the install already#I've been spoiled so hard by Linux. Dump on a stick ten minute install run one (1) update command and you're done#Meanwhile Windows is casually on its fourth restart after updating before inevitably finding Yet More Updates that require a restart#Such a shit OS

The Zachtronics Solitaire Collection
If you’ve been plugged into the indie scene, you have probably heard of Zachtronics before. A small studio created by one Zach Barth, Zachtronics has been responsible for a lot of unique games, usually puzzle focused, with Zach also having some infamy for making a game some believe lead to the inspiration for Minecraft with Infiniminer. Some of the studios’ most notable releases included SHENZHEN I/O, EXAPUNKS, and Eliza, the latter a bit of a formula breaker as a visual novel about mental health and technology based therapy. The studio seems to be closed as of the release of Last Call BBS, Zach Barth interested in escaping a niche his studio grew into, though he did give us one last gift under the studio banner with The Zachtronics Solitaire Collection. This is as the title suggests, a collection of solitaire games Zach developed for seven of his previous games, along with one new unique and punishing game exclusive to this collection. Considering how fleshed out these games have been just by themselves, having them in a single place instead of an extra in a unrelated game is very welcome.

Q4OS – I setup for myself Linux with Trinity

I setup a Linux for myself. For not powerful system. With my Acer Extensa. It has two cores with 1.5 ghz. And 4gb of ram. I select in result – Q4OS. As light Linux. For not powerful systems. With its own graphic environment. It is easier, lighter. It has a name Trinity. Firm development from system’s authors. Special for this purpose – to system not to require lots of resources. And it is very good for me.

With author`s website you to download distributive. It is written with flash as a boot. One little moment, check carefully. There are, also, Live CD images. It is for run system from device. Like flash or compact disk. And, there are for setup, install. So, for install, you need this version to download. I was not accurate and first, download Live Cd. And, I see – I cannot find option to install. But, you can run system at once! I was surprised. I see what is it. And, I start to understand, what is it all about.

Installation process. It is simple and easy. Nothing tricky. Nothing hard. This is good. Installation is friendly to the user. We are moving with steps of installation. And after - system, at last, launching. It is, already, installed. It is good to check updates. What is here. All is automatically checked by itself. It has a name packages for Linux. Lists with packages. You just need to start a certain purpose program. This means network is required. Without internet you cannot to do updates.

And, later, with manager packages. You start it and see what it can show you. So, it has lots of different. I am not expert with Linux. I take it as a probe. I setup for myself a whole pack, preset for packages. Little game. It is Chocolate Doom with some pack. So, this is not only Chocolate Doom. And, also, some files included. To have all included. So, it includes FreeDoom. And this is comfortable! So, you can start to play at once. To play. Levels for FreeDoom are unique. Even, its own graphics. But, mainly, it is same Doom.

Once again, I am not expert with Linux. And, better say, I try to try this with my own. But funny thing it is. Installer is looking like it is MS DOS. So, it has such install line. And, system itself. It reminds Windows. Level Windows Xp or even like Windows 98, maybe. Such background, similar color. And windows forms.

Interesting moment! Visually, I like a lot this Trinity scheme for desktop. About functions it is very good. I am very surprised. There are lots of things here. And main - there package manager. Using it to update. And install. And this is comfortable. For start – it is good way.

Visual side looks like something Windows 98 with plus. I like a lot this visual side. Functions are good. And now it is my first launch. I little about to play Doom. I visit websites with browser. First launch was successful! And positive!

iron (hardware) and programs. From time to time i restore computers, retro computers. Try retro soft. Check some programs. And write about all of these.
Dima Link is making retro videogames, apps, a little of music, write stories, and some retro more.

I had to (briefly) explain to a friend recently that linux does not run "on windows". it runs on what can run windows. it even runs on some stuff that can't run windows.
like microsoft and preinstalled windows keeps people super clueless and its so horrible. people don't even know they can be independent of microsoft. like ew how horrible is that shitty corporation
also to the people who want steamOS for desktop, that isnt how having more than just one distribution of an OS works :) you don't need steam to make steamOS for desktop you can try other distros, I hear bazzite is good for linux desktop gaming :)
and of in doubt you can try linux in a virtual machine
and for a more general purpose distro that has much if not all working right away theres Linux Mint and LMDE; and my time using opensuse has also been great
windows users love complaining about microsoft to me and when i suggest linux they're all like nooo installing it is too harddddd and when i offer helping them going through this process that is as easy as installing windows (while having none of the drawbacks) they're all like. but im scareddddd
of what? actually owning your computer???
#linuxblr#linuxposting#I dont want forced updates shoved down my throat making my pc unusable for like an hour the few times I boot fucking windows#why the fuck would I not have control on what software I run. the fuck are you installing that you dont want to give me the choice not to#wow I'm swaring a lot and also should go sleep but that recent conversation about linux running “on windows” like its some addon to#that bullshit. as if its it as fucking nonfree as anything that requires windows to run. like no offense to that friend shes cool its just#microsoft keeps like almost everyone asolutely fucking clueless and I have trouble comprehending just how bad things truly are what the fuc#and the people eagerly awaiting steamOS for desktop because we need to teach linux better and the concept of distros#tech literacy is important#like super duper important and microsoft grinds my fucking gears with how the fight against tech literacy like what the fuck#if we like banned OS being preinstalled I wonder of microsoft would even still sell copies. I bet they would struggle as they should

I started writing all of this in the tags, but then I got so many of them it just hit me it should be a whole post, so, here: i used linux (arch-based specifically) as my daily driver OS for 2 years and i loved it and it's great but it's not the solution
in fact the leap from ''i don't know how to move files between folders'' to linux is going to be too advanced for most people and make them more likely to give up. especially if a program they use and like doesn't have a native linux package.
like in my own experience i couldn't find a music player that could rival foobar for me on features so i just kept using foobar. and that meant that one of the first things i installed on a fresh linux install was wine. and some distros deal don't give you an easy way to do that. some do not even give you easy ways to install anything at all. and nobody who is not already comfortable with doing "advanced" user things on their preferred system is going to be suddenly more confident about using the linux terminal package installation process.
sometimes features that you don't even have to worry about on windows/native OS don't get automatically carried on linux distro installations. for example, my laptop's wifi card's drivers! it's not an old or obscure laptop - it's a lenovo legion. you know, a fairly popular laptop model! i had to urgently look for my ethernet cable and spent 3 days googling in my free time to figure out what driver i needed to install for my specific card and then way too much time fighting pamac over it because there were 3 different packages that had the name of my card but only one of them worked. or the fact that i searched for 2 years and still couldn't find a way to lower my screen's refresh rate, which was stuck at the max 165hz. so, you know, don't take your laptop off charging because you can't put it in a lower battery refresh rate, and just deal with the judder on movies because that's not going away. i lived with all of those issues and the inconvenience because to me, they weren't ~that~ big of a deal and at least some of them i could bypass or fix with a little bit of time. most people are not going to be fine with the inconvenience, especially if they remember using an OS where those same issues never even came up.
one thing i DO recommend people to do with linux is to keep a usb stick with a flashed linux distro that has a live mode, because you can use it without installing the OS. so if your main OS gets corrupted because of an update or anything else happens to it, you can just plug your linux usb into the usb port and boot into the live usb and have access to your files and go online if you want. on some distros you can even install programs on top of the base live distro, they are probably going to be gone next time you log in though. you'll need to learn how to access your bios menu, but it's significantly more user-friendly now than it was even a decade ago. if you, like me, have a fear of accidentally messing up your windows/etc OS and corrupting files in such a way that your computer just bricks itself basically, having that back-up linux live usb can do a lot for that anxiety. it definitely does mine!
bottom line don't offer people with no computer literacy linux as a user-friendly alternative. they WILL get confused by it and never want to try again in the future. offer them ways to learn their preferred system instead. in fact, chromeOS which powers chromebooks is a linux system. linux is not a catch all solution to computer literacy and never was
We need to lay more blame for "Kids don't know how computers work" at the feet of the people responsible: Google.
Google set out about a decade ago to push their (relatively unpopular) chromebooks by supplying them below-cost to schools for students, explicitly marketing them as being easy to restrict to certain activities, and in the offing, kids have now grown up in walled gardens, on glorified tablets that are designed to monetize and restrict every movement to maximize profit for one of the biggest companies in the world.
Tech literacy didn't mysteriously vanish, it was fucking murdered for profit.
#and also as an addon i don't consider myself a proficient user in linux systems or even windows that i have more familiarity with#but i know that i have enough computer literacy to know what to google and not get scared off by words like ''kernel'' and ''sudo''#this is actually my experience using linux as a somewhat pc literate user who doesn't know a lot about the system#or as you can also put it. an average desktop user. exactly like someone who you're inviting to try linux (maybe a bit more prepared)#and my experience was probably on the happier side because i really liked using it as my main OS. i still have a dual boot set up#i just don't log in to my linux system very often anymore. for most people in a similar starting position it would probably not go the same#silicon valley horror#electric sheep#ń txt
