Hello Poly community!

I’m looking for book recommendations (fiction) which feature poly characters and relationships. I prefer portrayals of polyfidelity but am absolutely open to reading about any type of poly relationships/characters. I love sci-fi and fantasy, but don’t mind regular ole Earth either. ;)

When I search online, it seems that people just can’t seem to understand the difference between love triangles and polyamory, and that’s just frustrating. I mean, like, teen fiction love triangles like Twilight or Hunger Games or any other number of books and series. And so searching can really be annoying. Sigh. -_- 

So! Anyone have any book/series recs?

I’ve already been recommended these (I have no knowledge on if they actually contain poly or not until I read them):

you can. sorta. there is several casual romances you can do at the same time and the game acknowledges that. But most more in depth content is hidden behind “serious” (aka monogamous bc of course it is…) relationships. I think someone on the team mistook “has a lot of sex with different people” for polyamory…

i’m not surprised and i’m not impressed bc that isn’t polyamory. that’s the same old tired shit they’ve always done, only with a new (to them) buzzword attached so they can get cookies from ppl desperate for crumbs.

bc this has arguably been their mo since da:o made the character who can be talked into having a threesome with a random woman he just met and your female PC, and can also be talked out of dumping your female PC in favor of keeping her as a mistress instead w the full knowledge he’ll be cheating on his eventual wife w PC, also give your female PC an ultimatum making them choose between him and another party member

da2 allowed the PC to have a random threesome w a LI and a guy they literally just met but doesn’t allow the PC to have a relationship (either V or triad) with this same LI and a character she has a clear and mutual attraction to and even ends up with if she’s not romanced by the PC

casual sex w multiple people has always been an option in these games, that’s never been a problem lol

Why were you recruited to HIVE?

Getting into places I shouldn't be and knowing things I shouldn't. I'm a cowards IRL but my villain self would totally be into Urban Exploring and solving conspiracy theories/mysteries. Maybe I'd blackmail for money, who knows.

What stream are you in?

Political/Financial. A) I don't like leading B) Me no fight and C) What's a computer. Also I love psychology and I wish the books would've covered the polyfi stream more.

Who are your friends (OCs or Main Characters)?

I'd hang with Nigel and Franz. I just like... Really like Nigel? He's very chill and has an interesting story. I'll marry that boy. Also I like gardening!

Who's your favorite teacher?

I love Ms. Leon for being a cat bc I love cats, but she's also a good person. I feel like she'd be great for conversation as well. I want to know more of her backstory! 2nd place is Pike because he's old man but very very smart and 3rd is Colonel Francisco because he's very intimidating but I know that deep down he's just that tough love type that wants to see you succeed.

What's your favorite class?

Alright probably Manipulation (was this an actual class in the book? Feel like it was but maybe I'm wrong), but also villainous history because I want Nero to blow my mind with how my whole life has been a lie and all the history the public knows is false and there's secret things like "nah we did that, actually, and let them take the blame for it" lol

What would you excell in?

Psychology. Love it. Also very good at science, and I've always imagined there's a class like "Cooking for Your Enemies" where they teach you dinner manners but also how to hide poison in food.

What would you struggle with?

Anything physical. Ya girl cannot lift more than two gallons of milk. Also I'm babey and have very sensitive skin/flesh due to anemia, so pressure hurts more than it should and I bruise easy. That and I hate gym class. What was it, like the Alpha stream's second day and they were like "hope y'all can hold yer body weight, time to grapple hook across this pool of water good luck"

What would your job be after you graduate?

Financial Advisor/imbedded spy. Like I'd be a secretary for whatever president & would report if the government was on GLOVE's trail or if there was something profitable to exploit.

What would you get in trouble for (i.e. pranks, escape attempts)?

I feel like I would totally skip class and go hide somewhere just to have a day to myself. Leave my blackbox in my room and go swimming, listen to music, play video games? Sure I'd get in trouble, but my punishment would be more alone time? Go scrub the floors? More time to myself to think. Detention? Good, leave me with some peace and quiet. I think HIVE would be a little hectic at times, and everyone needs a break.

A grudging V relationship forms (a->b<-c) due to magical soulmate rules.

It is a huge shock to many of the characters that there could possibly be two soulmates for one person. To the point where they double and triple check.

A and C: wanting to keep the B for themselves individually and only recognize the other when they realize they have to, bc, again... Soulmates. (and still don’t wanna)

A and C: Complaining at the idea of "sharing" B and getting into fights over it. Including thinking about killing each other.

A and C: planning to take B away from everyone else bc she's so pretty, they'd be in competition with others.

B: Doesn't want to be forced by the red thread to end up in a pseudo-polyfi relationship with A and C. This (intentionally or otherwise) is presented as part of her being chaotic with a reduced conscience.

sorry if this is intrusive and feel free to ignore, but how did you know you wanted to marry your husband and that it would work out? a lot of me wants to marry my girlfriend and propose at some unknown point in the future, likely a few years from now, but I know I'm young and inexperienced and mentally ill, and don't have many good models for good relationships as my family just has never had good marriages. idk I just worry too much about the future

I mean, you can’t know for sure that something’s going to work out. I was very much in love with my first spouse, and we were very much in love with our fiancee when we proposed to her. (MK was raised in a polyfi triad for the first three years of her life. It didn’t work out.)

How I was a lot more sure that it was gonna work out with @dadhoc in the long run was because I’d been through the collapse of that marriage, and I knew what we’d done wrong... 

... and @dadhoc is my best friend. That’s really... you know. How I knew. I couldn’t, at the point where they proposed to me, see my life without them, not voluntarily. I knew we were good partners. We had been through a lot at that point, and we were growing stronger through adversity rather than weaker. 

There’s no rush to get married. That’s my biggest advice. I had to wait for @dadhoc to heal from the wounds that their first marriage caused them, for them to be ready to marry me, and for me to be back on my feet after a terrible rebound when my first marriage fell apart.

I am more certain every day that we really meant that whole ‘til death do us part’ thing, and even though both of us brought a lot of wounds and baggage from both of us having been in abusive relationships in the past, we were willing to work through them and help the other person become a better person. 

That’s really it, I guess, in the end: does your partnership with that person make you a better, happier, more stable person? Do they actively contribute to you being a better person? Do you actively contribute to them being a better person? You don’t wanna make each other complete or anything but like. 

You want to be partners in building a better life together. That’s how you know.
