#for context. a few weeks back i was playing on a fast respawn 2fort server#mostly because i just wanted to just. hang out somewhere without any real serious gameplay happening#that said. for the first few hours i was playing on there. was mostly playing gunslinger engineer and detonator pyro#and we had a good push up into their base but were stuck just at the entrance. with a heavy hold from the enemy team#but after a while. i just kinda got bored and wanted to just fuck about with the taunts and loadouts i had#first thing i did was play pyro and do the cheers taunt before getting on my bike and swerving a bunch as i drove#but i dont think anyone could tell thats what i was doing#so after a bit i just changed to scout. and started just riding my skateboard#(i also did the drinking and riding bit a few times but i eventually just ended up skateboarding around)#(one bit being me on the top of the bridge. doing the cheers taunt. getting on my board. and then skating off the bridge and killbinding)#so at some point. i kept getting stuck in place for some reason. like speficially on bumpy ground or... in the air#and the moment i got stuck in the air (for 30+ seconds mind you) i was just like ''my quantum board technique''#and from there. i just acted as if i was playing the newest Pro Skater game#saying stuff like ''i have to do manual ollie combo for 150000000 points''#or like ''i have to find grindrails on this level''#eventually found my way into the sewers and said something like ''IVE FOUND THE HALF PIPES''#before saying like ''man they really screwed up the physics since the last game''#a soldier on the other team was trying to find me the whole time saying ''wheres tony hawk''#specifically because he had a tony hawk avatar. and i only realized after he said something about it#anyway. after all that i skateboarded into a minisentry and died#and my last message was supposed to be ''my combo has ended'' but i ended up typing 'bombo'#and it made me laugh SO hard i couldnt backspace. and added on with ''my sweet bombo''#and then i left because i had nothing more to do there. my bombo had ended and i had to move on.

Cozy System Server!
Hey there :)
If you're searching the tags on this post, you're probably pretty tired of the current climate of the online DID community. And I don't blame you, it's pretty bad.
If you're looking for a small, well-maintained, unbiased and non-judgemental system space, I run a server called Atomic Realms specifically for that purpose. We welcome any system experience and strive to stay educated and open-minded about this bizarre disorder.
You'll find the link to the server below. But first, some prerequisites:
This is an 18+ server, meaning you need to be at least bodily 18. 17-year-olds are allowed only with an invite from a current member of our server who is 18 or older.
We do not allow those under the radqueer, transid, endogenic/non-traumagenic, extremist, or -phobic umbrella. This space is not for you.
This server does have opt-in spaces to discuss very triggering topics, we do not shy away from the horrors that cause this disorder. Our topic blacklist is very small, so if that will make you uncomfortable, this might not be the server for you.

Danny wasn’t trying to become a supervillain’s protégé. Honestly, he was just trying to survive another semester at MIT without spontaneously combusting from stress. At nineteen, between triple-majoring in Astrophysics, Mechanical Engineering, and Paranormal Biochemistry—and moonlighting as the occasionally-glowy, occasionally-exploding, semi-competent vigilante known to the public as Phantom—Danny was hanging on by a thread. A very frayed, very caffeine-soaked thread. So when one of his professors suggested a special “independent study project” with a visiting Latverian dignitary-slash-scientist, Danny said yes without thinking. He needed the credits. He needed the money. He needed the free lunch vouchers. What he did not need, apparently, was to accidentally apprentice himself to Doctor Fucking’ Doom.
At first, he didn’t know. To Danny, “Victor” was just this weird, intense European dude with a crazy sense of fashion (who the hell wore a green cape in broad daylight?) and a laugh that definitely belonged in a villain origin story. But Victor paid well, never judged him for falling asleep mid-sentence, and always had the best coffee imported from who-knows-where. Danny figured he was just some rich old nerd with a lot of quirks. Maybe a little murder-y, but hey, Danny was from Amity Park. His standards for “dangerous mentor figure” were catastrophically low.
“Daniel,” Victor intoned one day, standing over a schematic that looked suspiciously like a laser death satellite. “Tell me: what improvements would you make to a mobile interdimensional particle cannon capable of vaporizing Manhattan?”
Danny, who hadn’t slept in three days and thought this was just a theoretical design, squinted at the blueprints and muttered, “Uh… you forgot the phase stabilizer. Without it, the cannon would rip itself apart before you could fire. Also, your aim’s gonna suck unless you recalibrate the gyroscopic system.”
Victor went unnaturally still. “Explain.”
Danny yawned so hard his jaw cracked. “M’kay, so if you adjust the vibrational harmonics here”—he drew all over the deadly weapon diagram with a crayon—“and rework the mana-infused crystal lattice to resonate at a higher frequency… boom. Stable, precise, terrifying. A+ on your murder machine, Professor Von Evilcape.”
Victor stared at him for a long time. Then he laughed. Not just any laugh. A full, villainous, booming laugh that echoed through the lab and set off three alarms in the next building over. Danny didn’t even blink. He just kept doodling tiny ghosts on the margins of the schematic.
From that moment onward, Victor—Doctor Doom, actual dictator of Latveria, sorcerer supreme wannabe, world-class narcissist—decided Danny was his heir apparent. His secret weapon. His beautiful chaotic son who understood him better than any of the clowns in Latveria ever had. He didn’t ask Danny if he wanted the role. He just started sending Danny increasingly absurd “assignments” that Danny, running on Monster Energy and bad life choices, completed without registering how criminally insane they were.
Case in point: one evening, Danny stumbled into the lab with a Red Bull in one hand and a half-eaten burrito in the other. Victor handed him a device.
“Install this at Stark Tower.”
Danny blinked at the tiny, harmless-looking black box. “Uh, what is it?”
“A signal booster for quantum research purposes.”
Danny, who trusted absolutely no one and also didn’t care because he had a paper due at midnight, shrugged. “Okay, cool.”
He broke into Stark Tower that night with the ease of a sleepwalking raccoon, installed the “signal booster” inside one of Tony Stark’s servers, and left. The next morning, the news was screaming about a massive data breach that almost triggered World War III. Danny was too busy trying to finish his midterm essay on quantum entanglement to notice.
“Good work, Daniel,” Victor said approvingly during their next meeting, clapping him on the back so hard he almost faceplanted into a dimensional rift. “You have the soul of a conqueror.”
“Thanks, man,” Danny mumbled, chugging coffee straight from the pot.
Victor took it a step further. He started introducing Danny at fancy functions. “This is Daniel. He is my most promising apprentice. One day he will inherit my empire.”
Danny, half-dead from exams and not paying attention, just nodded absently and said, “Yup. Love the Empire Strikes Back. Great movie. Big fan.”
Victor beamed.
It wasn’t until six months later, after the “Study Abroad” paperwork (actually an all-expenses-paid trip to Latveria) and the suspiciously grand laboratory gifted to him “for his brilliance,” that Danny realized something was deeply wrong.
He was skimming through some documents on Victor’s encrypted network—because of course Doom had an encrypted network called “DoomNet”—when he found it.
Last Will and Testament of Victor Von Doom: In the event of my death, all of Latveria, my scientific research, all proprietary technology, magical artifacts, nuclear launch codes, hidden doomsday devices, and the title of Supreme Monarch will pass to my chosen heir: Daniel Fenton, aka “Phantom,” aka “My Beautiful Disaster Child.”
Danny read it three times.
“Wait. Wait, wait, wait,” he whispered, voice cracking. “Am I—AM I A VILLAIN PRINCE?!”
Cue the world’s most pathetic breakdown.
“NO NO NO NO NO. I JUST WANTED A DAMN SCHOLARSHIP!” He hurled a coffee mug at the wall. It phased through because he lost control of his intangibility again. “THIS IS WHAT I GET FOR TRUSTING ANYONE IN A CAPE.”
Danny spent the next two hours panic-researching Victor Von Doom. It was bad. It was really bad. It was, like, world-endingly bad. Murder records. Wars. Kidnapping Reed Richards’ kids. Banning Beyoncé from Latveria because she rejected his dinner invitation. BAD.
And it was too late. Doom had gone on international television that morning and announced Danny’s name as his successor.
“I have chosen my heir,” Doom declared, standing proudly atop his gold-plated balcony while cameras flashed below. “The boy shall inherit everything I have built. Bow before your future king, Daniel Fenton!”
Meanwhile, in his MIT dorm room, Danny choked on his cereal.
“Oh my God,” Tucker screamed over Facetime. “YOU’RE DOOM JUNIOR!”
Jazz was furiously typing. “Danny, that’s treason. Like, actual treason.”
Sam just stared at him with unholy glee. “So… when are you conquering America?”
“NEVER,” Danny screeched.
Too late. The Avengers showed up at MIT the next day. It was not subtle.
Tony Stark crashed into Danny’s quantum physics lecture, kicked open the door, and pointed dramatically at him. “YOU!”
Danny, hunched over his notes and running on negative hours of sleep, blinked. “Me?”
“Yeah, you, Doom Boy,” Tony said, stomping down the aisle while half the class screamed and ducked for cover. “You hacked my servers, hijacked my satellites, and installed a literal doom-signal into my mainframe. Care to explain, junior dictator?”
Danny held up his hands. “Okay, look. In my defense, I thought it was a Wi-Fi booster.”
Steve Rogers leaned in. “Are you actively trying to destroy America?”
Danny’s eye twitched. “Sir, I am actively trying to pass Organic Chemistry.”
Natasha Romanoff clicked a pen menacingly. “Are you or are you not plotting to overthrow the world?”
Danny hesitated. “I mean… define ‘plotting’?”
There was a long, painful silence.
Tony sighed, dragging a hand down his face. “Kid. You’re on, like, several different international watchlists. Half of SHIELD thinks you’re planning to nuke New York.”
Danny’s voice cracked. “I didn’t even know how to do laundry until last month.”
And thus began the most chaotic custody battle in history: Doom versus the Avengers versus Danny versus himself.
Victor, naturally, was thrilled. He sent Danny monogrammed armor. A custom throne. A letter that read “My son, all great rulers are hated before they are loved. However feat not. Seize your destiny.”
Danny sent it back with a post-it note that said “pls stop.”
Tony tried to recruit him instead. “Work for me. You like tech, you like coffee, you’re already better at hacking than Peter—”
“HEY,” Peter Parker shouted from across the hall.
Danny groaned into his hands. “I don’t want to work for anyone! I just want a nap!”
Sam Wilson patted him on the back sympathetically. “Welcome to adulthood, kid.”
Things escalated horrifyingly fast. Latverian officials tried to smuggle Danny out of Massachusetts under the cover of night. Doom built a life-sized gold statue of him in Latveria’s capital square. The Avengers started putting “Phantom Threat Level: High” on their briefing files. Nick Fury cornered him in a diner and deadpanned, “Son, you’re one bad day away from becoming an international incident.”
Danny, shoving pancakes in his mouth, muffled, “I don’t wanna.”
Of course, life didn’t let him off that easy.
When Doom inevitably “died”—allegedly vaporized by a malfunctioning time machine because of course he did—Danny woke up to find a legal team at his dorm room.
“Congratulations, Your Majesty,” the lead lawyer said with an evil smile. “You are now King of Latveria.”
Danny fainted on the spot.
He woke up fifteen minutes later to find Sam fanning him with a Doom flag and Tucker wearing a Latverian general’s hat he stole from one of the lawyers.
“So…” Tucker grinned. “Wanna invade Canada first?”
Danny screamed into his pillow.
And somewhere, deep in the void between worlds, Doom—very much alive and sipping espresso—chuckled darkly.
“Atta boy, Daniel,” he whispered. “Atta boy.”

It wasn’t shyness, not really.
Just an overwhelming awareness of your own rhythm, too far removed from the world’s noisy metronome. You knew early on you understood things differently—less about feeling out what someone meant, more about isolating the structure beneath their words, the pattern in their tone, the physics of an interaction.
Most people called it brilliance. You called it survival.
The Baxter Foundation didn’t feel like survival at first.
It felt like exile.
A postdoctoral placement handed to you like a sealed fate—"promising," "potential," "gifted." Euphemisms for "difficult," "obsessive," "odd."
They said Reed Richards might know what to do with you.
You assumed they'd meant “handle.”
But he didn’t handle you. He saw you.
Reed Richards wasn’t what you expected.
The name carried weight: prodigy, theorist, treasured in the scientific community. You imagined arrogance, an aging wunderkind with a room full of accolades and a voice like static.
But the man who stood waiting for you at the base of the Baxter Building's elevator looked almost misplaced—rumpled in a navy button up, absent-mindedly smearing graphite on the sleeve as he scribbled into the margin of a battered notepad.
He had those lines around his mouth—the kind that softened a face rather than hardened it. A sharp nose, brown eyes, and that unmistakable streak of grey curling through otherwise dark hair.
At first, you assumed it was dyed—it looked too perfect. But it was real. Of course it was.
You hadn’t realized you were staring until he tilted his head.
“You're early,” he’d said, voice warm and textured. Then, a smile that lit up his whole face—eyes first. “I like that.”
That was two years ago.
You’ve since learned Reed keeps a second toothbrush for you in his private quarters upstairs, though he’s never pointed it out.
You discovered it one night after a double shift, when he gently steered you towards the bed in his guest room instead of letting you fall asleep under your desk again. He didn’t say, “Stay with me.” He just adjusted the pillow, handed you a glass of water, and made sure the bathroom light stayed on.
It’s quiet love. A sustained frequency. A knowing.
On Tuesdays, you both eat lunch in the server room because it's the only place in the Baxter Building that maintains the kind of white noise you can disappear into.
Reed brings you a sandwich without tomato—he learned after the first week that you can’t stand the texture—and sets it beside your research without interrupting your thought process. You don’t thank him out loud. You just leave the crusts in the pattern he finds funny, concentric squares, always precise.
Sometimes, he laughs at that. Sometimes, he files it away like data.
Today, the two of you are working on a stabilization algorithm for experimental gravitational anchors—Reed's theory, your math. The simulation keeps failing, and Reed mutters something under his breath about quantum decay before turning to you.
“Show me again how you’re quantizing the drift interval,” he says, pushing his chair slightly closer to yours.
You don’t flinch. He always asks to see your work like this—not to correct, but to understand. He thinks your brain is a mystery worth mapping. And maybe it is.
You pull up your calculations, annotated with your usual shorthand that no one else in the lab pretends to follow. Reed doesn’t blink. He reads your annotations like they're a shared language.
“You inverted the modulus,” he says quietly, quite in awe. “God, that’s...elegant.”
You look down. Compliments still stick to you like static. You’ve never known what to do with them.
“It was obvious,” you murmur, tapping the screen once to clear the render.
“Not to me.”
His voice carries something like reverence. Not the kind people fake when they’re talking to someone younger, or different. His is heavier. Sincere. Measured.
You chew the inside of your cheek.
“Can I show you something?” you ask.
That’s how you always start, even though Reed never says no.
The observatory lab is empty when you both arrive.
He unlocks it with his palmprint, but you go in first, navigating in the dark by memory. You’ve had an idea simmering for days—a tweak in boundary calibration using harmonic frequency overlap, something even Reed dismissed initially as too unstable.
But last night, at 2:43 a.m., your model ran clean for the first time. No drift. No bleed. Pure coherence.
You bring it up on the projection wall, fingers moving fast. Words tumble when you’re excited—sharp, fast, too much for most people. Reed doesn’t interrupt. He never has.
When the model stabilizes on the fourth run, you glance over your shoulder.
Reed is watching you.
Not the simulation. Not the math. You.
You freeze.
He steps forward slowly, like if he moves too fast you might vanish.
“You didn’t sleep last night, did you?”
You look back to the projection. “No. But it was worth it.”
He exhales a soft breath, close enough now that you can feel the warmth of it on your temple.
“You can’t burn like this all the time,” he murmurs, but his voice doesn’t hold judgment—only concern.
“I can,” you reply simply. “And I do.”
He lets out a low laugh, almost involuntarily. Then, more gently, “Let me take care of you. A little.”
He says it like a hypothesis. Something untested.
You don’t answer. Not out loud. But you lean into his shoulder—not quite a nod, not quite an invitation—and he stays there. Long enough that the simulation cycles again, quiet and steady in the background.
Later, you’ll find that he’s updated the cafeteria schedule in your calendar to make sure no one disturbs you between 12 and 2 p.m. on Tuesdays. You’ll notice that he’s ordered extra noise-cancelling panels for the lab, without ever saying why. That the lights outside your lab space dim slightly when you stay past midnight.
All Reed’s doing.
He never says it out loud.
But this is how he shows you.
In recalibrated thermostats. In cups of tea left cooling on your desk. In letting you be silent when silence is the only thing that fits.
The world outside moves too fast. New York never sleeps, never softens. There��s always construction in the distance, always an ambulance shrieking down Fifth, always people spilling from cafés and rooftop bars like they’re late for something invisible.
But in the Baxter Building—six floors above the ghost of the old Avengers Tower—the hum of your controlled environment remains undisturbed.
For now.
It’s the kind of phrase that hangs in the air longer than it should, like steam after the kettle's been lifted, like the echo of a chord when your fingers already left the strings.
You don’t hear it, of course. Not consciously. But the sensation trails you anyway, ghost-like, as the day folds open and the building shifts around you.
You return to Lab B-3, where a data stream from the gravitational anchor prototype pulses in pale blue on the screen. You prefer this room to the others—less foot traffic, colder air, fewer variables. The walls are lined with the modular panels you installed yourself, after three months of fighting sensory burnout from the old fluorescents. The air purifier in the corner hums at a frequency you can tolerate.
It smells faintly of dust and ozone, like a server farm on a rainy day.
You’re cataloging the last ten hours of micro-interference logs when the door hisses open behind you.
“Hey.”
You don’t turn. It’s a mistake, maybe, but you assume whoever it is has entered the wrong lab.
You’ve put the sign up: DO NOT DISTURB — QUANTUM MODELING IN PROGRESS. A laminated shield between you and the rest of the building’s noise.
The voice cuts through again, sharper. Louder.
“Hey—don’t ignore me.”
You blink at the screen. Your heart doesn’t race. It clenches, tightens like your ribcage is shrinking inward. You turn slowly.
It’s Dr. Ian Delmont. One of the senior engineers. Jacket unzipped, badge swinging loose around his neck like a noose that can’t make up its mind. His face is already red, already pulled taut around the mouth.
You recognize the body language...shoulders set forward, hands ready to gesture. Angry people always move in patterns. You learned this years ago, the way some people learn fire drills.
“Why the hell did you rewrite my core schematic without logging the revision?”
You stare at him.
“I didn’t rewrite anything. I optimized the redundancy logic. It was bottlenecking the chain reaction model.”
“That’s rewriting.”
Your voice stays steady, your mouth forming the words in the exact order they should go. “No, it's not. It’s a correction. The existing code couldn’t handle parallel iteration under dual-load conditions.”
“You didn’t clear it with me.”
“It was a bottleneck,” you repeat.
Ian’s voice raises. “I don’t care if it was a goddamn chokehold, you don’t get to touch my work without authorization.”
He says it loud enough that it ricochets off the walls. Too loud.

It’s not a seductive invitation. Your voice is too quiet. Too vulnerable.
You mean with you. Not to see you.
There’s a difference.
A difference he understands immediately.
He exhales once, very slowly.
“Yes,” he says.
The bathroom in Reed’s quarters is clean and understated. No clutter. Neutral tones. A single towel folded perfectly on the heated rack. The kind of space made by someone who needs things to stay quiet, even in private.
You peel off your clothes with your back to him. You don’t ask him to turn away. You just move, deliberately, like someone trying to stay present in their own body. You don’t rush.
He undresses behind you.
You don’t look.
Not because you’re afraid.
Just because this isn’t about looking.
When you step under the water, he follows. The spray is warm. Steam begins to rise immediately, curling around your shoulders, softening the edges of the room.
You don’t speak for a long time.
He helps you rinse shampoo from your hair.
He rubs a towel gently across your upper back, washing you between passes of the water.
You stand in the quiet, eyes closed, while he reaches for the soap, his hands careful and broad. You’ve never felt so heldin a room without touch. Even when he does touch you, it’s so measured. Like he’s calibrating pressure in real time.
He never touches more than he needs to.
He never looks longer than you let him.
You begin to wash him in return—his arms, his back. Your fingers map the ridges of his shoulders. The plane of his chest. 
He smiles at you when you look up at him.
You smile back.
Afterward, you towel off side by side. You slip into the oversized sleep shirt he keeps in the guest drawers—the one you claimed without asking the second time you stayed over. Reed pulls on a soft cotton shirt and gray sweatpants, hair still damp, curls a little unruly.
You both brush your teeth in silence. The kind of silence built on trust, not absence.
You spit and rinse and then, leaning over the sink, you say, “You’re not what I expected.”
Reed glances at you in the mirror.
“I’m not?” he asks, toothbrush in hand.
You shake your head. “You’re a better equation.”
He stares at you for a moment, then leans over, presses a kiss to your temple, and whispers, “So are you.”
You fall asleep in his bed, facing each other.
You don’t touch—not at first. But at some point, your foot slides across the sheet and brushes his calf.
He doesn’t bother to move.
You drift off like that.
And he stays awake for a while longer, just watching you breathe, memorizing the sound of it, calculating the half-life of the moment in real time.
He doesn't think there's a formula for this.
But if there were, he’d already be solving for you.

fuckkkkk. this isn't fair. i said it before, and i'll say it again, i'm such a plot person that writing a short little drabble about this literally hurt my heart (and i have a tachycardia). and, once again, don't be surprised if this ends up turning into a real fic because i so badly want to write more of this

You slip through the Watchtower’s ventilation shaft at 0200, pulse steady, mind a razor-edged checklist: map the building, isolate Barnes, place the micro-charges, vanish before dawn.
Three weeks ago Wilson Fisk slid the dossier across your table—Terminate the New Avengers. Your freedom for their lives. Easy math, you told yourself.
Except Bucky Barnes is nothing like the file photos.
Tonight he catches you in the dark of the server room—metal fingers closing around your wrist before you even sense him move. The emergency lights bathe everything in crimson.
“What did they promise you?” he asks, voice low, half-tired, half-sad. No anger yet. That’s worse.
You tear free, knife flashing. He meets it with his vibranium palm, sparks skittering off the blade.
“Y/N, stop.” Your own name hurts coming from him. You’ve spent the last sixteen nights on adjacent rooftops sharing cold coffee and colder jokes, pretending you were just another freelancer running recon for the team. Pretending you didn’t memorize the angle of his smile or the way he tilts his head when he’s listening.
Your ears ring with every reason you can’t have this—Fisk’s collar at your throat, the kill-switch in your bloodstream, the tiny explosives already magnetized to the north support beam.
Bucky’s eyes find the outline of those charges beneath your suit. Realization eclipses the hurt. “You’re here to burn us down.”
Ava phases through the wall behind him, ghost-white and humming with quantum static. Yelena emerges from a hatch overhead, knife twirling, expression unreadable. Alexei’s footsteps drum in distant corridors. You’re surrounded by people who’ve called you teammate for nearly a month.
“Give me one good reason,” Bucky murmurs, stepping between you and the others, “why I shouldn’t radio Walker to pull the alarm.”
You think of the detonator tucked beneath your ribs. Of Fisk’s voice: If you fail, the toxin will liquefy your lungs in sixty seconds.
You also think of Bucky at 3 a.m., half-asleep on the common-room couch, offering you the blanket because “New York radiators never do what they’re told.” You think of how Bob kept setting extra places at dinner so you’d feel welcome.
Give me one good reason…
You press the blade to your own throat. “Because if you stop me, he kills me anyway.” Your hand doesn’t tremble—but your voice does. “And I don’t want to die hating myself.”
Anguish flickers across his face, sharp as shrapnel. He holsters his sidearm, raises his metal hand, and crushes your detonator into glittering shards. “Then we change the math.”
Behind him, Yelena lowers her knife. Ava’s shoulders soften. You can almost hear Alexei mutter a relieved curse down the hallway.
Your comm unit crackles—Fisk’s timer triggering. Forty-five seconds before the toxin releases.
Bucky catches your collapsing form, hoists you into his arms. “Lab’s two floors down,” he rasps to the team. “Ava—phase the doors open. Yelena—anti-serum cabinet. Bob—clear the corridor. And someone warn Walker before he shoots first and asks obnoxious questions later.”
You taste metal, feel your heartbeat stutter, but the last thing you see is Bucky’s jaw set in stubborn determination—like he’s done choosing between what’s right and what’s easy.
The world blurs into darkness, but his voice anchors you: “Stay with me, doll. We’re not letting you go.” And in that breath between torment and mercy, you realize falling in love wasn’t the failure. It was the mission all along.

I'm not the first person to observe that magical girls are literally a brighter and more vibrant version of their ordinary selves, but I like this particular Memoria from Magia Record, "Girl's Boundary" ("That Which Divides" in the North American server) not only because it shows this juxtaposition directly, but because it also makes the subtext explicitly text:
There is a vast gap between ordinary girls and Magical Girls. An invisible but tremendous gap. However, armed with their "feelings" and "wishes" they can cross that gap in a single step.
There's a tendency to focus on the downsides of contracting--and for good reason--but I think that it's also important to focus on the very real appeal (especially for adolescents) of stepping out of your boring everyday life and becoming an idealized and powerful version of yourself, complete with ruffles and sparkles. (The sparkles in this drawing indicate that this is 2-star Memoria, and probably were not meant to be Magical Girl Madoka is sparkling, but wow, does it sure look like it at first glance.) It's such a powerful fantasy, and this card does such a great job of depicting that, and showing what it's like for it to come true.
The use of "boundary," 境界 (kyoukai) here is interesting to me in contrast to the kekkai, 結界, or magical barrier created by witches (translated as "labyrinth" in the official English version). Becoming a witch is literally being bounded, circumscribed, limited in possibilities; instead of being able to transform back and forth, they are fundamentally stuck in a monstrous and inhuman form for eternity. A witch is neither a magical nor an ordinary girl but a secret third thing, reviled and trapped in their own personal hell, existing in a liminal space that is anathema to the world around it (represented by the change in animation). Magical girls, however, have the freedom to cross over at will because their feeling and wishes give them strength and power to do so.
This card's text also reinforces the idea that magical girls literally exist in a different world that ordinary people cannot experience. In the original series, this gap serves to isolate and alienate them from their previous existence and ensure there is no turning back (and Madoka and Sayaka do not even have to contract to experience this for themselves; just being introduced to that world is enough).
However, the act of becoming a magical girl--both the original contract and the transformation--is, like electrons, fundamentally quantum in nature: it allows them to instantly* jump from world to world without passing through any points in between. Which makes sense in a weird sort of way, since "feelings" and "wishes" are literally energy, and the transformation of soul gem to grief seed comes with a powerful explosion reminiscent of nuclear fission.
(*Many arguments have been made about how long magical girl transformations actually take in-universe and whether the slow montages are experienced by the girls and/or observers or are only a representation for the audience; YMMV, but on several occasions we see magical girls in PMMM transform instantly without an extended sequence, which makes the latter seem more likely.)
Speaking of transformation sequences, this card evokes Madoka's in the opening of the PMMM, where she dances with her double. More poignantly, it also speaks to Madoka's profound self-worth issues, where she feels she is useless in her ordinary life and can only find fulfillment as a magical girl.
Finally, I have a lot of questions about that magic circle design in the upper right corner, and I wish more of it was visible in the background.
