Jojo excellently brings up the fact that most of Twilights strength is all natural and I desperately want to talk about that.

Link is 17 in twilight princess and can yeet a full-grown goat without problem. And ordon goats are not tiny like ours tend to be they are almost cow sized.

Now to top that. He can also yeet a full sized Goron. Yes he needs the boots to keep him from get knocked on his ass. But the boots do not add to his upper body and grip strength. He has the grip strength to stop their rolling, and the upper body strength to drag and throw them without falling over. AT THE AGE OF 17!!

So him at whatever age he currently is, is bound to be a little terrifying when it comes to strength.

Not only has he kept up with the heroing but he's also kept the fee items he has and each of them have a lot of uses.

Now we get to the whole reason for this rant. The boots.

In the game he struggles to move around very well in the Iron boots. But with years of practice? Aside from understandably heavy and noisy foot steps still I be he could walk normally in them by now.

Meaning given the chance he could absolutely crush someone with his legs without help if he needs too.

Because even if he doesn't use them all the time he would probably keep up with specific training to keep it so he can use them easily, it only makes sense.

So yeah...absolutely terrifying

A skilled fighter with natural hunting instincts that could crush you in more ways than one.

Yet he hits you with that adorable golden retriever boy smile and and all you see is fluffy little ranch hand just being a dork.

I know I’ve seen it somewhere before (most likely here on tumblr) but i AM obsessed with the idea of a muppets version of good omens where the human characters are all played by muppets and aziraphale and crowley are played by humans who are very clearly controlling muppet versions of themselves as their corporations but the muppets only ever directly address the muppet corporations. as far as they can see aziraphale and crowley are also only muppets

moreover I am EXTRA obsessed with the idea that aziraphale and crowley. also keep up the muppeteering when alone with each other. their muppets are their corporations how they interact with the earth and they interact with each other while within these corporations. but when you can literally see their true (human) forms looming over their dinky little flesh (felt) bodies it adds a new level of hilarity

I cant tell which would be funnier: if, when talking to each other, they looked each other dead in the eyes while making their muppets also look at each other, or if they ALSO pretended the other was only a muppet and utterly ignored their true human forms

that being said I think for the drunk scene they should be slugging back actual glasses of wine in one hand and just very sloppily controlling their muppet selves with the other. the muppets have little fake glasses of wine too obvi

with tracy aziraphale just takes over as her muppeteer she just sometimes moves and talks on her own. all the other angels and demons are just humans but when on earth the angels have muppets and the demons have really shitty hand puppets. they just stand there holding the muppets/puppets they dont make them move and act. aziraphale and crowley are thought to be very weird and creepy for doing so with theirs

the horsepersons…. I think they start with muppets only but you can see there’s sticks or wires or whatever controlling their limbs. and them when they start to come into their power suddenly they’re being controlled by a person. and when they go full Horsepersons Of The Apocalypse they’re fully human (in form). except for death. death is identical to tv canon bc he’s the one who hides his true nature the least. and he’s creepier that way

with adam? I think he’s just an uncomfortably human looking muppet. his face is more normally proportioned. his felt is a very human beigey tan. his hands are uncomfortably dextrous like the swedish chef’s. maybe when he comes into his powers he starts looking less and less like a muppet and more and more like a human until it culminates in something dead center in the uncanny valley for both humans and muppets. and then after he tells satan to fuck off he suddenly looks almost perfectly muppet normal with only a twinge of almost-human-y since he still has at least Some powers

in terms of the muppet casting I have no idea who should be whom jdjdbdkd maybe miss piggy for anathema and kermit for newt, mostly bc they’re arguably the main human (adult) characters and it’s funny to me to call a frog “newt”. however this version does not include the all-but-onscreen sex scene okay we do not need to see that. it fades to black just like in the book thank you ❤️

also to be clear all the angels and demons and in particular aziraphale and crowley are all still dressed like in canon. when their wings show up their human true form also has wings. crowley puts on sunglasses on his human self before digging out a tiny pair of muppet sized ones and putting it in his muppet hand to put on his muppet face. yknow. stuff like that

What’s in a name (Haruaki’s, specifically)

It’s 3am, the JP raws for ch101 have come out but the CN ones haven’t so I can’t start working on the chapter, so I have time to think about nonsense.

As you know, “Abe Haruaki” and “Abe no Seimei” use the same kanji. That’s like, the whole thing. The fundamental gimmick of the manga.

The thing is, this tiny detail has different implications when it’s translated to another language, and makes reading the manga in Japanese, Chinese and English 3 entirely different experiences. (Besides just being 3 different languages, of course)

Japanese is unique in its use of furigana for kanji, the little text beside or above a character to tell you how it’s read, a sort of addendum, though it’s also used to add a nuance to it. For example, sometimes the kanji will be a person’s name, but the furigana would say “that idiot”.

(^ This is a furigana joke. In this case, 晴明 is the kanji and “scum” is the furigana.)

This is an entirely natural and unobtrusive part of a Japanese publication, but there’s not a real way to translate it into English entirely. (The options are entirely rephrasing what the furigana says, or to add it in brackets after the word, which stands out and ends up occupying as much space as the original word.)

Translating Japanese to Chinese is a unique language pair, especially in this case, where only the kanji is preserved and the reading of the kanji is abandoned. No matter what the furigana says, how characters are actually pronouncing his name, it is simply written and read as 晴明 (qingming). Any distinction between “Abe Haruaki” and “Abe no Seimei” in the actual text itself is lost, and the only way a Chinese reader would know there ever was a difference would be if another reader left a comment explaining it. Surely, that’s a different sort of nuance than what the Japanese text conveys.

The English translation, however, goes the opposite direction (and this is probably true for every other language that’s not Chinese). It preserves only the pronunciation of the name, and the fact that it uses the same kanji is lost, relegated to an afterthought, a neat bit of trivia in a translation note. It erases any connection between “Haruaki” and “Seimei”, leaving the surname to be the only similarity. This, surely, is yet another different sort of nuance.

The Chinese version that preserves only the kanji and erases any distinction between the two readings, the English version that emphasizes the distinction and removes the connection that the kanji provides, and the Japanese original text, the middle ground. Inevitably, I’m sure just the way his name is presented conveys a different impression of the story and leaves readers with different understandings of it.

I have noticed this in practice too, where snarky remarks about “Oh, another Abe no Seimei manga?” start at page 1 or even the synopsis for the Chinese translation (basically, as soon as his name appears), whereas the same remarks for the English version only start once Abe no Seimei is mentioned directly by name. (I don’t have a personal anecdote for the Japanese version mostly because I don’t know where to find these sorts of comments)

Although this has been present since the start, I feel like it’s all the more relevant in the recent chapters over the past year, where Abe no Seimei has been established as an actual character beyond being just a name that’s brought up sometimes, and the similarities and differences between him and Haruaki called to attention and central to the story multiple times. (In chapter 101 too, which is why I’m writing this in the first place.)

At the end of the day, this is just my perspective as someone who mainly reads the English version, fairly comfortable with Chinese and trying to learn Japanese. My takeaway of this story will inevitably be different from someone who only reads the Chinese version, and both would be different from someone who only reads the Japanese version. Actually, everyone who reads the English version probably has a different reading of the story. I’ll just never know where the tiny differences lie, and the closest I can get is by reading people’s written comments and opinions.

Anyway. Isn’t it interesting the different nuances the way Haruaki’s name is presented can convey, whether you’re aware of it or not? (Well you’re aware of it now. The burden of knowledge)

Addendum: Something I learned from “Learning Japanese” videos

(Spoiler: it wasn’t Japanese. God I wish it was. This shit is hard)

I wasn’t aware of this until it was pointed out to me, but you probably don’t read out every single English word in your head. By which I mean, you don’t have to sound out every single word, otherwise reading would take way longer and this way, you’re also able to skim over long words that maybe you don’t know. At the point you’re fluent enough in English to be reading rambles on obscure manga on tumblr, individual alphabets don’t even register and you’re probably recognizing words by their shape. I don’t know if this concept is taught for languages that use the same writing system as English (I don’t have personal experience with that), but I do know Chinese is like that too, and of course, Japanese. (This ends up being relevant to Haruaki’s name I swear)

Thing is, while furigana is normal for publications, it’s not used in most other situations, like tweets and, importantly, handwritten text unless it’s REALLY significant.

Which brings us to situations in the manga where there’s handwritten asides that mention Haruaki’s name only by kanji. The translator just has to guess, like if it’s said by one of the students it’s probably “Seimei”, if Haruaki’s referring to himself it would be “Haruaki” but in situations like this where it’s an objective note and not from the POV of anyone, I’m always unsure. (I tend to default to “Haruaki” but the official translator usually defaults to “Seimei” I think)

Fact of the matter is, it’s possible sensei has a reading in mind when she writes it, but it’s just as possible she doesn’t. It is text after all, where the shape of the words holds more importance than how it’s read out loud. And in situations where Abe no Seimei isn’t in the picture, how Haruaki’s name is read really isn’t that important in the grand scheme of things (because you know who it’s referring to, it is still important from a story perspective)

(The tweets thing also reminds me, because you can’t differentiate “Haruaki” and “Seimei” by kanji alone, Japanese tweets call Abe no Seimei “晴明公” (Sir Seimei?) or “先祖晴明” (ancestor Seimei). Or actually just referring to Haruaki by ☀️ and Seimei by 祖.)

OKAY so the concept is. about 6 months post-canon, the main and minor families are invited to the destination wedding of one of their allies from a hugely powerful mafia family - it's a few nights staying on a private tropical island, and as a respect/trust/hospitality thing, it would be considered really inappropriate for guests to bring more than one or two bodyguards per group.

so Tankhun is like “well then obviously I can’t go?” because while he is now much better at leaving the house, he’s not quite ‘get on a plane and fly to a random island for several days of intense socialisation with incredibly dangerous near-strangers without a single Trusted Bodyguard’ levels of better.

he’s talking to Chay about it and Chay's like “yeah, it's kind of fucked up that everyone gets a +1 but not a bodyguard. how would anyone even know if your +1 was your bodyguard?!” and Tankhun's like “.....Chay you're a genius. Arm, I need you to be my wedding date.”

commence the fake dating shenanigans! they ‘reveal’ their secret, long-term relationship to the entire family, and then they’ve got to pretend to be a couple in front of everyone while Arm actually works as Tankhun’s bodyguard. as the only other person who knows their relationship isn’t real, Chay is helping to mastermind the entire operation. what Chay also knows is that Khun does actually have very real and Not Fake feelings for Arm - and you can be sure he’s going to be a menace about it.

luckily, Khun is being just as much of a menace in return - the wedding is the first time Kim and Chay have been in the same room since… well, everything, and Tankhun has watched them both silently pine for each other for long enough. background KimChay reconciliation era my beloved!

and so the usual fake dating antics ensue! lots of pining… plenty of acting out intimacy while wishing it was genuine… Chay putting them in so many Situations… lines slowly blurring between what is part of the act and what is real… and. obviously. there was only one bed.

finished ygo zexal for the first time last week and i absolutely adored it and am STILL thinking so much about it (as i will be probably for. a While now if my relationships with the other ygo spinoffs ive seen are any indication).....time again for me to do my little personal rambly yugioh series retrospective post as the brainworms truly start to set in. kattobingu feel the flow high five the sky build the overlay network let’s goooo!!!

GOD. YEAH. THIS ONE MIGHT BE MY FAVORITE YUGIOH SERIES IVE SEEN YET. HOLY SHIT. 2021 Dana was really out here thinking Zexal looked kind of annoying (based on mild DL characters/plot osmosis) and not terribly interesting and I want to go back in time and shake her shoulders and say NO. NO YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND. ZEXAL FUCKING ROCKS. every yugioh has some degree of Danabait to it (probably because. watching Duel Monsters as a child was the catalyst to what Danabait even is lol) but JESUS MARY AND JOSEPH Zexal is like being hit by one nuclear bomb of shit genetically engineered in a lab to make me insane after another.

THE ART STYLE. OF ZEXAL, FOR ONE. makes me absolutely rabid animal bonkers--I LOVE seeing the way the ygo art style has been honed and developed and evolved over time. YGO influenced my art style more than I can articulate, and then zexal comes in swinging with the ygo art style at its Most Zany. The EXPRESSIONS in this show!!!!!!!!! Fucking rule!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A MASSIVE CHUNK OF THE CAST DOESNT HAVE MOUTHS HALF THE TIME AND YET STILL ARE SOME OF THE MOST EXPRESSIVE YGO GUYS EVER!!!! Constantly making expressions I LOVE to draw!!!! and oh my god the COLOR DIRECTION OF YUGIOH ZEXAL?!?!? genuinely absolutely phenomenal and one of my all time favorites i’ve seen in any cartoon, western or anime. you mean to tell me we got a lighting and color budget now??? we get yugioh scenes looking like this??!??

THE BEST. THE BEST. THE BEST. OBSESSED WITH IT. ABSORBING ZEXAL’S COLOR AND EXPRESSION PROWESS. STEALING ITS POWER.

ANYWAY as usual with my ygo watching i was primarily watching the dub (absolutely thrilled to have a Completed Yugioh Dub to watch for the first time since DM, MAN.) but I did end up watching...over half of Zexal II’s sub; stuff just gets so absolutely insane with the Barian Emperors that I desperately wanted every possible inch of their lore so I ended up watching both (sometimes back and forth at the same type like an unhinged wild animal) for the full picture. I like Zexal’s dub a lot!! its comedic timing is ON POINT, EXTREMELY FUNNY DUB. and really like..all of the main dub VAs are so, SO good (as they usually are.) There are a lot of bizarre things they cut though, a lot of childhood flashbacks and little character moments and the like. It’s a shame! I can only imagine a lot of them were cut to leave more room for ad time which. Sucks a bit 🥴A lot of duels do whip a lot harder in the sub too, especially in the back half..... still though, enjoyed my time with the dub. there’s a remarkable amount of stuff i am SHOCKED they actually did keep in?!??! The car crash that killed Shark’s parents is just straight up presented as is with like one or two small cuts. A LITTLE GIRL’S DEAD BODY IS SHOWN?? ON SCREEN??? ZEXAL DUB!! KIDS LOVE IT SO!!! MY GOD!!!

ok enough on that. some breakdowns/specific points like I usually do with these roundups:

Stuff I Didn’t Like: always get this one outta the way first. There really wasnt a whole lot I straight up disliked with this one!! It’s extremely solid all around. It does, of course, have some...Choices, being made, like. Girag’s lips. and. Girag’s backstory. Love the guy but oh my god why did they do that to him 😭Yugioh Racially Questionable moments ride again!!! At this point it’s just par for the course, definitely not the first time a ygo has. Done stuff like that. Ah well. Worth mentioning though.

What’s really a shame is that Zexal has some of the COOLEST, MOST FUN GIRL CHARACTERS, and time and time again they just dont do anything with them!!!!!!!!!!!! IT’S SO FRUSTRATING. i LOVE rio but the poor girl is fridged for literally 2/3s of the series!! She’s in the hospital like five times!!!! Rio and Anna and Tori and Dextra and Kari are all like, some of my favorite ygo gals YET but they have maybe 5 duels between them. Konami let your girls DUEL CHALLENGE. PLEASE.

hm what else. I guess also the final showdown with the series “Big Bad” was. uh. kind of let down lmao. But to be fair I was positively spoiled last series with the Z-one duel lol. Can’t win ‘em all. As cool as the concept of “the protag and rival team up to duel the Big Bad” is, and as cool as Don Thousands Entire toxic manipulative dynamic with the Barian Emperors is for like the Entire Rest of Zexal II is, they just....don’t. Do much with him for that last Donny T duel?? Would have loved more backstory elaboration or just like. Anything. It was over so soon and I was like “...that was it??” HDFHGSDFG thankfully the last two duels of zexal whip like hell so we bounce back!!

i also kind of wish don thousand kept his sick as hell demon armor form but c’est la vie i suppose. sad! well there’s other guys.

Favorite Season: I actually have no idea how Zexal is split up into seasons, so I guess Fav Arc would be a better term? Anyway I loved the World Duel Carnival Arc, I’m one of like 5 people who actually enjoy tournament arcs but i think theyre FUN and this one is a blast. There’s Arclight Family Agonies coming from every direction and there’s the INSANE DUEL ROLLER COASTER and Vetrix is bouncing around being a little freak, it’s GREAT

anyway and then Zexal II came in and grabbed me by the head and threw me into the drywall

LIKE. MY GOD. ZEXAL HAS THE FUCKING EMOTIONAL PACING OF MORAL OREL. YOU HIT Z2 AND SHIT STARTS GETTING REAL AND GOING HARD AS HELL AND IM OUT HERE GETTING MY BRAIN SCRAMBLED. I love like. All of the arcs of zexal II it’s hard to pick a favorite but I DO really like just that first third or so where the Barians are just starting to show up and the horrors haven’t quite begun and everything’s so silly and Ray Shadows is Very There. gives me gx season 1 vibes a little bit. it’s a delight.

Favorite Characters: oh right I should. talk about that. pained smile.

i joke about this a lot but usually every ygo series has like. A Character That’s My Actual Favorite, and A Character That Makes Me Absolutely Insane (syrus vs. zane, leo vs. aporia, etc.) but, uh. this time I GUESS THAT’S JUST. THE SAME CHARACTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SORRY. TO BE BASIC. BUT WHY DID THEY DO THAT TO ME. WHY DID THEY PUT A CHARACTER IN ZEXAL WHO ALREADY LOOKS LIKE MY ART STYLE. ALREADY LOOKS LIKE I DREW HIM. AND THEN MAKE HIM FUCKED UP AND SILLY AND A SAD LITTLE JACKASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ABSOLUTELY NEFARIOUS!!!!!!!!! 2021 dana had no CLUE they were hiding this fucker in the back of one of the ygo spinoffs. never could have predicted it. vector’s genuinely one of the best ygo characters of all time to me. what if a yugioh character had the most absolutely bonkers expressions youve ever seen and he was constantly doing little bits and acting like a little funnyman and then the devil fucking Kills Him. he’s perfect. the madness has only just begun to infect me i fear.

ANYWAY other than The Carrot in Question, I fucking love like...all of Zexal’s cast; I think this is the first time for any ygo where a series just didnt really have any characters I straight up Did Not Like. it’s such a solid, colorful cast that just checks so many boxes for my fav kinds of characters. I didn’t think I was gonna like Yuma but I ended up LOVING HIM!!!! I LOVE SEEING A YGO PROTAG THATS LIKE..ACTUALLY BAD AT THE GAME, THAT GROWS BETTER AND STRONGER OVER TIME BUT STAYS SO SILLY. I love what Zexal does to “traditional” yugioh character archetypes--Shark and Kite are both such cool rival characters and the shit they do with Shark especially?!?! NEVER COULD HAVE IMAGINED THEM DOING THAT. WITH A YUGIOH RIVAL. KAIBA COULD NEVER.

Narrowing down a top five fav Zexal guys is so hard, they really came in swinging with Catostrophic Families AND insane alien guys, but after pondering I think I’d have to say rn it’s Vector, Shark, Nistro (my fuckin  MAN!!!!!!!), Trey, and Alito. Immediate runnerup also being Tori. I fucking love Tori, new favorite main ygo girl. She bore witness to All That Shit and never folded. SHe’s Yuma’s FRIEND his CONFIDANT his EMOTIONAL SUPPORT!!!!! Absolute boss. Yuma would be dead in a ditch somewhere by episode 20 without her around.

Favorite Duel: BEEN GOING BACK AND FORTH ON THIS A LOT but I think my favorite duel was and still is the Trey vs. Yuma duel in zexal I, it’s just fantastic. The COLORS AND LIGHTING!!!!! The stakes!!! The SICK DUEL ARMOR!! Trey literally threatens a world-ending murder-suicide because he wants his family to be proud of him and well i’ll just explode into bits all up and down the road about it. Goes hard as hell. Trey and Yuma’s dynamic is one of my favs in Zexal but that’s it’s own post.

I also love all of Alito’s duels (especially the tag duel with Nistro, which is one of the most atrociously danabait duels ever (slash pos) and his last duel against yuma, which ALSO has some of the fucking coolest shots and lighting of any yugioh duel to me) and the last duel between Shark and Yuma. Shit rocks.

Zexal is also pretty unique to me in that it’s the first time i can really concretely say ive had favorite EPISODES as opposed to just favorite duels. There are so many episodes left and right that just make my fucking head explode. The BASEBALL DUEL FRIENDSHIP GAMES EPISODE. The EPISODE WHERE YUMA AND SHARK ARE IN THE HOSPITAL. The “VECTOR GETS STRAPPED INTO THE ALIEN GOD THRONE AND MR. HEARTLAND IS BEING INSANE AND THE ARCLIGHTS ARE IN A SUBMARINE AND ERAZOR IS GOING TO FUCKING KILL YUMA’S FRIENDS” episode. THE. UM. THE EPISODE WHERE THIS HAPPENS

^BROKE MY WHOLE DAMN BRAIN IN HALF. I AM STILL RECOVERING FROM THE DAMAGE zexal II comes in swinging with episodes that just knock your tits clean off and you LOVE to see it!!!!

Miscellaneous Other Zexal Gushing: IT’S JUST FUCKING GOOD!!!! THERE’S SO MUCH TO LOVE!!!!! I love the cast, I love Yuma and Astral’s dynamic and just how much love is there. I LOVE yuma’s friend group, they are SUCH perfect dweeby little middle schooler weird kids. I love the ways Zexal parallels Duel Monsters (and imo takes a lot of elements from DM and does them even better), I love Yuma’s grandma and Kari, ABSOLUTE REAL ONES!!! I fucking love Orbital 7. I love the Number cards and how theyre just completely thematically not related to each other at ALL (sometimes it’s a bug! sometimes it’s a guy! sometimes it’s an entire floating civilization!!!) I love the ABSOLUTELY BONKERS RELIGIOUS MOTIFS AND SYMBOLISM FLYING AROUND IN ANY AND ALL DIRECTIONS. THEY DID THAT FOR ME!!!!!!!!!!!!! ASTRAL CHRIST ALLEGORY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And I just...adore how fundamentally Zexal is about kindness and hope and love, and also about how it’s so important to not lose yourself or your sense of fun as you grow up!! That theme absolutely EVISCERATED ME when gx came out swinging with it in its last season, and it’s GETTIN ME AGAIN HERE!!! IT’S ABOUT HAVING FUN!! IT’S ABOUT THE BONDS WE MAKE WITH OTHERS!!! IT’S ABOUT HOW CEASELESS KINDNESS CAN BE AN UNSTOPPABLE FORCE THAT MAKES EVEN THE IMMOVEABLE MOVEABLE. yuma has SO much joy and love and forgiveness in his body and it makes me WAIL.

Duel Monsters really ends on this note of “goodbye” with Atem leaving, and it works well for that story’s themes of grief. Meanwhile I think it’s very special that while Zexal also ends on a goodbye with Astral leaving, it feels so much more like a “see you later.”  That hanging note of “we’ll meet again.” It’s so sweet. The themes of past and future at play really just make you root for these kids and hope they grow up into the best versions of themselves.

Also it’s so fucking funny that like All of the Cast That Died and Went to Hell Came Back Except Mr. Heartland Who Definitely Died For Real. gay WRONGS.

God. what else. I’m sure I’ll think of 8352389 more things I love about Zexal immediately after I post this. It’s just that good. So thrilled I gave it a go. I love you Xyz Monsters I love you Dyson Sphere I love you Vector’s dub and sub voices I love you Duel Monster Based Off of the Titantic I love you Dr. Faker’s absolutely insane character design I love you Barian World I love you Arclight family I love you Zexal II Dub Opening Song That’s Sung By Bruno 5D’s VA I love you YUMA AND FRIENDS!!!!!!!!!!! Fuck it I’m rambling anyways.

OKAY SO DRAGONS.

Ground rules for my au: the dragons got their cookies forms after they died and got reincarnated as cookies.

Why does this happen? Dragon’s valley flow/cycle of life.

The dragons valley essentially made dragons in the first place a loooooooong time ago (in modern days dragons are more plentiful in many areas but their ancestry can be traced back to dragon valley) and it likes these little bitches.

However over the decades as dragons were hunted out of fear or greed and the legendary dragons were slowly hunted into hiding. The valley came to the conclusion that the legendary dragons would not survive this new cookie world. The minor dragons (the more animalistic ones) could recover, as some cookies recognized their importance in echo systems and food chains and advocated for protection, or at least not their eradication, but the legendary dragons were clever, powerful, and fucking stubborn.

The legendary dragons were also the only ones to be able to fully utilize dragon tongue so unless it wanted a whole magic language to die out those big bitches had to survive and pass down the knowledge, if not to other talking dragons than to cookies but as they currently stand, most legendary dragons would rather die than teach cookies a word of dragon tongue nor give them the magic to utilize it

The valley itself isn’t so much sentient as it’s a force of nature. And all It knew is it doesn’t want these legendary dragons to die out. Because dragons aren’t immortal but they live for a stupid long time. Like a couple centuries at LEAST (still debating if minor dragons also live that long or have slightly shorter lifespans when compared to legendary dragons, which is like comparing the length of gigantic sky scrapers) so it used the flow of life to come up with a plan.

The legendary dragons would inevitably die, whether of old age, being killed, or some other method that causes their demise, and using the flow of life, it’d bring them back as cookies. Without their original memories, and resetting the aging counter a bit.

They’d eventually regain the memory’s of their past lives and their full power, but until then they could live among the cookies and gain a new perspective or appreciation for them, and ideally that’d allow them to at least be willing to co exist with cookies, if not protect them.

There is some variation in how each dragon came back and I’ll get there but for now here’s what’s consistent:

The dragons have to die in order to be reborn

They will not have the memories of their past life immediately, at the very least they’ll start to regain them in about 10 years

They will not regain their full dragon power and ability to turn into their dragon form until they start to regain their memories.

They will come back a bit younger than how they were mentally before they died. (There is reasoning for this)

I will also note exceptions: this reincarnation thing isn’t limited to just the legendary dragons, this can also include any dragon that is powerful, can speak, or just wins the universal lottery.

Using ocs as example- Blueberry dragon by all accounts should not have been qualified for the dragon cookie reincarnation thing and yet she was, was it because she died so young? Did she have some potential the flow of life sensed? Or was it some work of fate?

Fuck if I know and frankly I hope it’s debated in universe.

I’m currently unsure if this dragon cookie reincarnation will apply to minor dragons like the wyvern, but since minor dragons are animalistic in nature and are slowly recovering Imma say it likely won’t happen unless someone gets really fucking lucky. Or some insane bulshit happens. One of those

But back to the legendary dragons-

As for the five dragons cause of death and circumstance when they were reborn, I haven’t got everything down yet so I’ll go in order of what I got down ish (the exact timeline is still a wip and I haven’t settled on anything yet. Plus I’m not including ocs in this just yet)

-Pitaya dragon was the last legendary dragon to die, killed by Knight cookie himself when he was an older teenager (because blorbo bias I made him cool) when they were brought back as a cookie they were around young adult older teen age mentally. And frankly has the worst case of the reincarnation amnesia.

Doesn’t help pitaya isn’t actively trying to regain their past memories. Idk why, maybe they don’t care, maybe they suspect their previous self was a dickhead and don’t want to ruin their opinion on the cookies, maybe it’s a secret third thing! But this refusal to remember has made them slower in regaining their full power, they can’t even consistently turn into their dragon form yet. The Hollyberry castle one? That was a fluke and haven’t been able to do this again.

However they arguably get along the best with cookies! After the castle event they sorta became a main stay in the kingdom, they may act tough and crass but they are kind of like a giant fussy cat that likes to fight. They really are a giant lizard. They sort of unofficially declared themselves the protector of the Hollyberry kingdom, claiming that place is also their nest, outside of dragons valley of course.

Plus I’m playing with the idea with the current red dragon event that this will be the event that gets them actually thinking about their past and lost memories, because a deal they made as a dragon that they forgot about is actively biting them in the tail and now they’re slightly worried about any more deals they forgot. I’m thinking by the end of this event they can take their true dragon form at will. Depends how things play out but I like this story arc.

-Ananas is an interesting case, they died of old age or possibly sickness at the tropical soda islands. And they were a dragon who hated cookies, saw himself as above them that sort of thing. So they’d need extra work to even be willing to negotiate with cookies.

So the cycle brought them back as a young child.

They were taken in and raised by the mango tribe, and when they started to regain their past life memories and full power the integration kind of worked. They still had that complex but swore to protect the island and it’s cookies, and is forever grateful to the mango tribe, even going to them for help when he adopted a baby cookie and realized they had no fucking clue how to parent.

Honestly they still have a ways to go when dropping that dragons pride thing, I plan for an arc where they decide to reclaim that so called pride and make a new thing that’s way healthier or something. He at least becomes less bitchy about caring for cookies.

Also he’s got his full power back as shown with going full dragon on command.

-Lotus dragon also was a dragon who disliked cookies, seeing them as simply batteries to drain of life energy to sustain herself. So safe to say she also saw themselves as above cookies.

Lotus dragon died when the lotus paradise was wiped out all that time ago. And when the villagers went to search for the dragon they found a young child in the wreckage that had a resemblance to the dragon said to live in the paradise. And the village raised her while they rebuilt the paradise.

When she started regaining her past life’s memories she decided to take part more in the rebuilding effort, the lotus paradise was her home, and she declared herself the guardian of the paradise. They still ended up keeping that sort of symbiotic relationship with cookies, but instead of going full parasitic went a bit more mutualistic?

She’s drain a bit of life energy during wish festivals and power herself, but would grant wishes in return (within reason, she’d do illusion magic for the stuff outside of her power) she still said cookies mean nothing to her but her actions show otherwise.

This is especially shown when longan wrecks her shit and she decides she wants that bitches head on a silver platter how DARE you stone HER cookies and destroy HER home!

And of course the cookies and their reliance on her not as batteries but as a guardian did help her regain her dragon form and realize ‘hey this is nice actually’ and after the apocalypse is over she’s likely much nicer to cookies.

Now she informs the cookies of the energy draining and gets their consent first. Or something, The wish festival still happens but it’s less something idk yet. Less bad? Less leechie? Idk details are fuzzy but it’s nice and fun and she thinks cookies are cool actually.

-Lychee I’ll admit I don’t have the details on yet, they’re likely second last to die but I’m willing to be flexible on that? Idk yet. They likely were a dragon who didn’t care much for cookies, just agreeing with longan because she liked them even before or something idk.

I’m playing with the idea they were briefly raised by the ancient rambutan tribe when reborn, but after getting her memories back decided to run away and live in a cave with monsters instead, idk I think the parallel with Ananas could be fun especially if that didn’t work for them.

Plus it’d make her character arc with the current rambutan and her tribe kinda cute and come full circle and look this is very wip right now. But they do eventually side with the cookies, just takes a lot of work and a whole ass crisis during the apocalypse.

I’m open to suggestions for lychee.

And finally Longan dragon

Dear Sweet Longan dragon.

This bitch gamed the system.

-So they can’t be the first to die but did recognize the reincarnation thing going on, and probably did a little forseeing of their own about it. They already knew the dragon population would dwindle and that cookies would rule the world. And they hated that. Their first plan was having a lot of eggs but that was more of a backup (plus they were more concerned about having the ‘perfect heir to the ivory dragon name’ than the actual growing the population thing so you can imagine how well that went) After observing as much of this reincarnation cycle as they could, they decided a plan.

They’d seal themselves in their palace, and I guess set up something so lychee can wake them up a fuck long time later, and sink it into the ocean, and then they’d er- well- cause their own death- and ensure when they were reborn (which they knew would happen) they’d be stuck in the palace until they regained their memory and power back, and thus would learn nothing and gain no appreciation for cookies so when they came back they’d be no different than before and thus undermined this entire fucking system and I am shaking longan like a leaf MOTHERFUCKER YOU CHEATED.

I mean it is in character, longan is so stubborn to change and even considering the possibility of dragon kind adapting to this new world, no longer on top but still very much a part of it to be respected and feared, and decided to do the whole bring back the past plan instead.

Because all the foresight in the world cannot stop you from being stubborn as a brick wall.

Im not gonna go into my dragon cookie ocs in this post, if interest is there I’ll make a separate one but

-TLDR I made a whole system where the dragons reincarnated as dragon cookies because the universe wanted them to learn to adapt to change and longan looked at this and said “no”

AND THIS ALL STARTED BECAUSE I WANTED KNIGHT COOKIE TO BE A DRAGON KILLING BADDASS GOODNIGHT EVERYBODY!

Random Thoughts: I don't think Beatrice would travel (or at least wouldn't go globetrotting) after Adriel's defeat and Ava's departure. There's a few reasons.

Beatrice might be feeling more free to embrace who she is and figure out more about herself outside of her upbringing and role within the OCS but I don't think she'd want to go very far.

Perhaps when Ava told her to live her life she meant for Beatrice to travel the world, to climb mountains, and see sights. Maybe she wanted Beatrice to take a boat down the Amazon, to surf off of Bondi Beach, to meet Mickey Mouse in Florida, and swim in the Blue Grotto.

For Beatrice though, living right now means preparing and learning more in anticipation of the oncoming threat. And learning as much as she can about Reya, her realm, and any others that might be like her or Adriel. Hardest of all is doing all that outside of the OCS but in ways it allows her to pursue these goals in ways that her sisters might not be able to. It also allows her to remain in contact with Jillian Salvius, who distances herself from the OCS for obvious reasons. She's great help in directing Beatrice towards information and the former nun hopes she can help keep the grieving mother grounded.

For Beatrice, living starts small. She doesn't leave the country, too worried of being very far from her sisters. She also wants to learn more about the place she's lived for so long while locked away behind the literal walls of the Cat's Cradle and her own figurative walls. She wants to connect to people the way Mary made look so easy.

Research and training still take up so much time. Especially when Jillian comes calling with a new invention or breakthrough she'd like Beatrice to consult on. But Beatrice finds time to connect. She teaches. Short lessons in self defense in the evening hours at a local dance studio. But it's between these responsibilities that Beatrice partakes and lives.

Little victories, as Ava liked to call them. Little rebellions as Beatrice still thinks of them. Her parents never allowed her many sweets when she was younger. Now Beatrice finds herself indulging in Bubblegum flavored, double scoop, sprinkle covered ice cream here and there. And yes, it mostly just enforces that Mint Chocolate Chip is her favorite but in her mind she can see the snarls her mother would shoot her if she bore witness to some of the overindulgent treats Beatrice had been sampling.

Impulse purchases weren't a consideration for Beatrice but after a particularly trying day at Jillian's lab, she finds herself buying a guitar. It only has a little bit to do with Ava once saying she'd look badass with one and a lot to do with her former classmates' insistence on the pointlessness of the musical arts. Beatrice is awful at playing guitar. Her fingers can't quite find the music and sooner than she'd like she finds herself hiding it in a corner of her apartment.

Silly nicknacks like refrigerator magnets, little figurine statues, and the like were mostly just clutter but Beatrice finds herself picking them up here and there. She holds onto cups and receipts from new restaurants and ships she visits. Mementos of where she's been. It's no great adventure around the world but each little new something Beatrice holds onto makes her feel like she's living a little bit more every day.

She moves cities every few weeks. New places and people, new opportunities, hopefully new leads. New receipts, a new magnet or shot glass. Beatrice still didn't drink but the glasses were small and inoffensive enough not to cause clutter.

She still mourns and still worries and prepares but in between these big responsibilities, the duties she retains in different ways than before. It's silly and insignificant but she lives in these little moments, growing and changing in little ways. Beatrice finds herself waking up later than she ever had in the past, 6:00AM. She doesn't immediately clean every dish the second it reaches the sink.

It's small and ridiculous but these changes were unthinkable to her before. It's not living big or loud or adventuring but for as small as each change is, it's something Beatrice never saw coming. Hell, she gets an Instagram just to take pictures of food and animals she comes across as back up for whenever she has to ditch her current burner phones. They're all little victories day in and day out as she works and trains and learns.

And one day, after what seems like far too long, Beatrice gets to share it all with Ava, whose eyes light up at all the funky shotglasses that line their cabinet. Ava, who insists on what restaurants and cafes Beatrice has to take her back to. Ava, who instantly takes over what she now deems as their Instagram account and shares all their victories going forward, little and big.

This feral cat Leon thing just keeps building. Makes me want to see things from the Doctor’s point of view. Around the second or third visit, Leo jets “Special Patient” status, and the whole office staff are putting on protective gear or trying to call out sick if they know in advance He is coming.

Those poor doctors lol. I imagine the office would either set aside the whole day just for the Hamato boys (b/c there's 4 of them, and one's a semi-feral little shit.) or at least schedule them during non-standard office times. Bringing a in four turtles, one of which is either screeching, biting, or at some point got hit with a tranquilizer dart, would not be a sight they want their other patrons to see. (the office would love the few times Donnie gets fed up and just shoots him with the tranquilizer. They don't have to worry about getting bit then lol.)

When it becomes apparent he's probably not going to stop acting like this, they might start prescribing some calming meds for him to take before those visits (which his family have to sneak to him b/c Leo won't take meds.)

but yeah, Leo damn near having his own feral state (like Raph's savage raph state) over going to the doctors is not what i expected out of this au, but i am certainly here for it lol.

So, translating drained me a little, but I have been meaning to talk about my thoughts on this year's relay blog, and a discussion in the Kisetsu server about the Homare -> Citron post order sparked a ramble from me, so I figured I'd post it here, too.

I think putting Homare and Citron in sequence was really fun and showed us a lot more about both of them than any other order could have this year. While at first glance it looks like Homare trying to fill out Citron's profile properly until the "someone I look up to" section, and Citron responding with nothing but jokes, but looking properly at both posts, you see a lot more of each of their characters and development.

The way I saw it, with Homare putting down his own name for Citron's "someone I look up to," it would've been easy to dismiss that as showing that Homare still struggles with understanding people, but Citron's reaction ended up proving that he was right, and it wasn't just by chance that he was. Homare says himself that he analyzed Citron over and over again, and it shows in all three sections of the profile book that he *does* understand him, with him writing down "wordplay" for Citron's hobby, pegging him as someone prone to loneliness (there's a ramble about shared feelings of isolation somewhere here) and wanting to love (again, I could go off about Citron loving harugumi and expecting nothing in return), and even in the names he put down in all three flowers in the association corner, including his own. The way he was able to do this and the way he talks about it both show a great deal of his development and how much more confident he's become in his ability to understand the people around him.

Going forward, Citron's reaction to his profile only further solidifies the idea that Homare saw right through him. He felt seen, his perfectly crafted character was seen right through, and his entire blog was a response to that feeling.

He starts off his post with a title in his typical misspelled fashion (though this carries very different meaning in Japanese than I could ever convey in English with him using wildly inappropriate kanji instead of just misspelling or using hiragana instead of katakana or vice versa and I think it's really interesting what kanji he chose for his own name because they imply these choices were very intentional, especially in combination with what he chose for Guy, but I digress), setting up the expectation for a typical Citron blog, but from the very first sentence, the tone of the post completely changes and Citron is suddenly speaking in a formal and proper way that he hasn't before. He also says:

This time, I thought it would be better to make this easier for everyone to read, so I adopted this way of writing. However, my other blogs have always gotten through to you, right?

Immediately, readers think something is off, and to anyone who doesn't know what Citron is really like, the first question is "okay, who wrote this for him?" And that question is further justified by the way he ends his blog with "Written by: ???" (the Japanese word is 代筆, writing on someone's behalf), creating the impression that he didn't write this post himself; someone else had to write it for him. His hobby is wordplay, you say? What wordplay? He's simply bad at Japanese and messes up his words out of genuine inexperience. Silly Homare. To any outsider, it would seem that Homare genuinely is mistaken, but Homare knows, as we readers do, that he hit the nail on the head with that one, and it takes someone who can understand other people to see that Citron is just putting up a front.

This is further seen in the profiles he filled out, a stark contrast to the tone of the blog post in how joke-y they are, especially when right after correcting his own, he tells Homare not to joke around like that.

His corrections are filled with references to his manzai duo with Tsuzuru, where we all know he plays the role of the boke or funny man. Aside from acting silly throughout his corrections, there are three references to manzai in that one sheet, serving to really drive the point home; he's just a funny man, no more, no less. The first is him writing in "manzai" for his hobby, the second is him crossing out "A kind person" and saying Tsuzuru is his tsukkomi (straight man) in Citrun, and the third, which I meant to clarify in the posts at some point but forgot to, is his reaction/response to Homare's incorrect username for him. I tried to have it come across by having it say "what the heck?" to make it sound sillier than something like "what the hell?" or "what are you talking about?", which are also both correct translations of the phrase he used. That phrase is 「なんでやねん？」, which means what I said above, except that it's in Kansai dialect as opposed to 'standard' Tokyo Japanese, the significance of that being that the Kansai dialect is frequently associated with manzai.

In combination with the way he misspells Sakyo's name in two different ways and jokes around on his entire profile (especially by adding on that he's unsure of Sakyo's ID when it's obvious that the ID is the only thing he got anywhere near the correct answer with), it's clear that Citron is trying to drive two points home: that he's bad at Japanese, and that he's a funny man whose character runs no deeper than it seems on the surface. Essentially, he's all but telling Homare that he hit too close to the truth in a way that only Homare will be able to see; to anyone else, it's just Citron being his usual silly self, and that's why I really appreciate that these two got put one after the other. It gave us a really interesting look at both of their characters that I don't think any other medium would have showed us as well as these blog posts did.

YE I imagine prior to the RTDL events he was fine for the most part - maybe a pang of loneliness here and there cause I imagine he was alone for quite a long while - but never really had a connection strong enough with anyone that would warrant being anxious at the thought of being alone. In fact I imagine Magolor might have preferred being alone before.

But... then the epilogue - and the aftermath of betraying Kirby, someone who genuinely helped him out of goodwill. The betrayal was planned from the get-go, I imagine that Magolor, although not intentionally, did in fact form some form of connection with the puffball and his friends.

Though his own hubris and ambition did him in, and only when he was banished did the brutal realization hit him. He had someone who cared, he had someone who wanted him there, someone who genuinely saw him as a true friend - and yet discarded all of that aside for his own goal.

The isolation in the other world made him realize how truly, genuinely, alone he was. Because of his own doing. No one there to help, no one there to support him.

SO that aside - this is what probably led him to develop separation anxiety. Still, he does enjoy his privacy - knowing that now he has someone to fall back on (Inki in this case) and he's no longer on his lonesome completely. But the idea of being completely alone again, just like in the other world, terrifies him. Especially if the only company he has are the bizarre and unstable creatures there, and his own imagination, and memories of his final fight with Kirby.

If you think about it, the three Dreamers (as well as their Closest Persons) has their own theme going on. Lurien (and his Butler) with Devotion.

Herrah (and Hornet) with Choice.

And Monomon (and Quirrel) with Change.

With all of them (as well as the Hollow Knight) being burdened by Duty.

Lurien's is pretty self-explanatory in and of itself so I'll ramble about Herrah and Monomon for now. (sorry my short Watcher king. There's just not enough content on you for me to ramble about)

Also, this ramble of mine will definitely be a mess so... be warned.

The reason I think Herrah's theme here is with Choice is because she's the only one of the Dreamers who didn't exactly have a side if the Seals should be broken or kept and instead allowed the Knight to choose for themself. However, it's not that simple. Because unlike the two Dreamers who held onto their beliefs with conviction, Herrah seems to be just.... tired. Exhausted.

The reason why Herrah didn't choose a side is because she was just exhausted from everything, atleast from what we see with her dialogue during the first time the Dreamers appear before the Knight.

>"Let us sleep, little shadow. Return to your darkness. Allow us our peace"

​​​(This is probably Herrah speaking or atleast the first line of it because she's not talking about the Seals, as well as the fact she calls the Knight "little shadow" which is also the same nickname Hornet uses, giving us a small nudge that these two are connected.)

The thing is, in this line Herrah isn't exactly giving us a choice per say. She just allows us to do what we please, not giving us an option we can possibly take. She just says "Allow us our peace" which is ambiguous by itself. So this brings me to my next point, Herrah's theme is Choice because she wasn't Given A Choice.

The reason why Herrah chose to Dream in the first place is because she didn't have a choice. She was in a tight position. Even if she refused the King's offer, her people would've succumbed to the Infection either way. So dreaming really was the only choice at the time to be able to stop the Infection and allow her people to continue striving. This is not to say she is a weak person, in fact she's the complete opposite of a weak person if she was given the title of Herrah the Beast.

Which brings us to Hornet. Herrah chose to dream for Hornet because she loves her. And so now, the choice to what happens to Hallownest lies with her. And in Silksong, possibly Pharloom as well. And she did make a choice of her own, unlike her mother that was forced to choosing one.

Monomon on the other hand is Change. This is even more apparent with Monomon's dreamnail dialogue as well as the fact that she's willing to risk the Infection leaking out without the protection of the Seals in order to bring change and a new age to Hallownest's corpse.

(Breaking the Seals and burdening the Knight with the responsibility of stopping the Infection by finding another way to do it is a risky move after all when none of them are even sure if the Knight can even achieve such a feat. It's not surprising why Lurien would be so against it if it's so risky. He was just being logical and cautious in his own way besides his Devotion to the Pale King. She even acknowledges this in her cut dreamnail dialogue)

Hell, in her cut dreamnail dialogue she even says that "To live forever in an unchanging world... Death, I would fear less"

Similarly to Hornet (especially after the Knight starts going for the Dream No More ending), Monomon wants Hallownest to rest in peace.

And she thinks breaking the Seals is the only way to do this by destroying the everlasting stasis. By allowing change to affect Hallownest's corpse once again.

Sometimes a small sacrifice must be made to give change and a new beginning. Despite how bittersweet it may be.

And now that brings us to Quirrel!! Not only has he changed ever since he took on Monomon's mask and travelled far beyond Hallownest, but after being unburdened of his duty upon release of Monomon's mask, he apparently disappears leaving his nail behind.

Even with the knowledge that Monomon and Quirrel's theme is change, it's still ambiguous whether or not that means he died or left. After all, Monomon (as well as the other Dreamers, and the Knight. And in the worse case scenario, those that remain in Hallownest) died in order for this change to happen

Quirrel's life isn't completely needed to bring change and a new beginning in Hallownest. So maybe, like Hornet who can and will make a choice of her own, Quirrel can have his own change and new beginning in life as well.

If you think about, in a weird sense I suppose the Dreamers' Closest Persons drive home of these themes even further. Whether for the better or for the worse. (Sorry Lurien's Butler, but you do technically do show the worse of the theme Devotion. It's sweet you still watch over Lurien but also unfortunate that it took your life in the process as well)

It also makes alot of sense as to why, out of all the Dreamers' Closest Persons, we only get to see Hornet and Quirrel in game in the Knight's adventure. Because the Knight's journey is about Choice and Change. Not Devotion.

It's why The Hollow Knight ending is the most disappointing ending of all because the Knight going with their existence's devotion to the Pale King isn't what their journey was about. It's not about embracing the very thing that caused their painful existence, it's about making a choice of your own (sometimes even literally) to bring a better change to the worse present.

The reason why Hornet and Quirrel is a big part of the Knight's journey is because they embody it.

I feel like Tex and Felix would get along surprisingly well? Felix finally has someone who’s not as “we need to focus on the job, no time for fun” as Locus is (although Tex is more serious than Felix is (Locus finds her more sufferable than Felix at times cuz of this))

Tex and Locus surprisingly get along decently well too.

Once the Reds and Blues get there and Tex starts to get to know them and seeing that Wash is there, she starts to get hesitant about turning on them and killing them

Especially Wash- she hates PF and wants it destroyed, but Wash was hurt and traumatized and used by PF too and she couldn’t help but feel bad for him and wish she could have gotten him out of there.

Another Muppets song on my list to somehow work into MBS: "Movin' Right Along"!! (I know it's a bit late and nobody cares, but I really wanted to do it)

I think this would be a song the kids do some of their Season 2 travel montage to. Not all of it, since there's also plot important stuff that has to happen, but definitely some of it!

Some notes: I get that in Season 2 it's kind of tense and serious, what with Mr. Benedict and Number Two kidnapped and the kids running around Europe unsupervised. However. This is a Muppet Movie. People are barely capable of being serious for more than five seconds. Please keep that in mind as this song is very silly.

Constance very begrudgingly says her lines in a slightly sing-song voice, barely differentiable from speaking. In the parts where it lists all of the kids, she is just half-heartedly lip-syncing, or rolling her eyes at the others.

Sticky is trying very hard to keep track of the maps/train schedules this whole time. He is usually the one pointing the direction they should be going/correcting them if they get lost.

Reynie and Kate are the best roadtrip sing-along buddies. Every now and again Reynie will stop singing because he's trying to keep the group on track, but he is also having a lot of fun with Kate.

Kate would be the one driving the car, if that was feasible/what was actually happening. This is a very contextless and unfounded statement but I believe you need it in order to properly visualize their travel dynamic.
