The Flight of Freedom 7

Launched from Cape Canaveral 62 years ago today Astronaut Alan B. Shepard, Jr. became the first American in Space, during a fifteen minute suborbital flight aboard the Mercury Redstone 4 capsule Freedom 7. After a successful mission Shepard's capsule splashdown in the Atlantic Ocean and was recovered aboard a waiting Aircraft Carrier the USS Lake Champlain; Taking America's earliest steps in the Space Race which would eventually led to American Astronauts walking on the moon eight years later.

The majority of builds on Hermitcraft don’t have smoke alarms. There are a couple reasons for this.

#1, fire (usually) doesn’t spread, so things burning isn’t really an issue.

#2, fireworks and rockets are used very frequently, and constant beeping is very annoying.

#3, it’s very common for certain Hermits to catch on fire from pranks, touching redstone, messing with Doc, etc.

#4, Tango emits smoke when eating certain things and with extreme emotions, and he’d prefer if he didn’t have to deal with loud beeps whenever he tries to do redstone.

On the other hand, the few times smoke alarms are used they’re for anti-Tango (and sometimes Scar) alarm systems. Don’t want a Tango somewhere? Put in some smoke alarms! They’ll alert you about 60% of the time.

Bdubs and Etho’s smoke alarms keep getting disassembled, though. And if they’re blown up they can assume it was Grian that time.

Tango can eat explosives! As a being originating from fire itself and not technically being organic, if it manages to hurt him he'll be completely fine and can easily reform. It almost never hurts him, though, and he's already figured out that full blocks of tnt should be eaten in little nibbles instead of all at once.

His favorite type of explosives to eat are firework rockets. He'll usually just eat spare flight rockets, mostly when he's deep in his redstone spaghetti and needs a quick snack. But on occasion he'll treat himself to a full on firework, the more big and complex the better.

This has made him one of Cuboom's biggest customers. Cub wasn't completely expecting Tango to review his custom fireworks by eating them, but he can't say he was entirely surprised. Tango has offered to help review and test any new firework designs, and although Cub hasn't given him full permission yet, he does send Tango newer designs whenever they come out.

Tango claims that different firework colors and effects have different tastes, meanwhile the other Hermits are still trying to figure out what flavor "zap-ificaty" is supposed to be.

The "Tango" firework Cub made was actually designed for more than looks- it's supposed to be as delicious as possible! The red is his favourite flavoured colour.

"Trying On a Space Capsule"

I was reading the comments in a recent repost of Alan Shepard's Mercury Redstone. I forget that most people have no frame of reference for these early rockets. Those first 7 astronauts had a lot of courage! They joked that you didn't get into a Mercury capsule so much as you 'put it on'...they were that small! I had the privilege of 'trying one on' many years ago. At 6 foot 2 it was an extremely tight fit. Here's to those early pioneers!
