omg do you guys wanna hear about the church family tree from my rvb fantasy au. i spent quite a bit of time working it out bc, since its fantasy, theres no ai and i had to figure out how it would translate lol

this will contain mild spoilers for my au but a) it doesnt exist yet and b) most of them are derived from the plot of rvb so theyre kind of already spoiled. so. anyway, on to the actual post

ok so first off. church (alpha) has DID. so all the ai fragments exist but theyre no longer ai and theyre in his head the whole time. and this includes beta!tex (tentatively called beth? since tex also exists. we'll get to that). it also includes epsilon which will be. interesting. i have some ideas for how to handle that but its kinda besides the point.

the director is churchs father, and allison is churchs mother (who dies when church is a kid). the director is also carolinas father, but carolina has a different mother, so church and carolina are half siblings. tex was also raised by the director but she is not blood related to any of them - she bears a coincidental resemblance to allison (in personality, not necessarily physical appearance), which is why the director favours her over carolina (keeping the carolina/tex favourite child tension, of course). i havent worked out exactly when the director took in tex, but if it was early enough that the director named her, he probably would have named her allison (i mean, he also named his son after himself in this au. you know he'd do it, ESPECIALLY if allison is already dead at this point) and she chooses to go by tex or smth. alternatively, the director named her tex the same way he named the other freelancers like washington and york, keeping the whole "leaving your old name (read: old self) behind when you join the freelancers" thing from canon, meaning that her previous name (and whether she had one at all) is irrelevant. hmmm now that i say that, its probably the latter tbh

now, i may keep beth being based on allison, but while i know what an introject is, i dont know if i feel comfortable really. representing one. so it may not be CANON canon but itll probably be canon to me. additionally, church is raised separately from carolina, tex, and eventually the other freelancers [the freelancers are kinda like a family in this au btw. but like a fucked up hierarchal one. and church is completely isolated from it even though the director is "raising" him. anyway] for plot reasons, but he coincidentally runs into tex one day as kids and they meet in secret for years until tex eventually helps him escape the director. which is to say. beth will likely pick up traits/mannerisms from tex just by virtue of tex being churchs only friend in childhood, combined with the fact that allison and tex are kind of similar in personality. so shes blood related to allison and potentially an introject of her, and has spent a lot of time with tex/knows her very well, so shes gonna have similarities to both of them but she is ultimately her own person. in churchs head.

uhhhh i think that covers it? anyway this means i get to write interactions between tex and beth which will be extremely fun. i like tex as a character and itll probably be difficult to decide how to characterize her in 2 different ways (plus allison but shes gonna be dead for most of it so i dont really have to worry about her) and then to have them interact? they would be chaotic besties i just KNOW it

What is a System?

Hello, if you've been lead to this page it's probably because you've seen talk of systems, plurality, fictives, etc. by us and you're not quite sure what that is. Here's a little FAQ for you, using RvB as jumping off point to help understand.

Note that this is nowhere near a comprehensive covering of all of plurality, but simply a crash course in things most commonly referred to on this blog.

What's a system? What does plural mean?

A system is the collection of multiple (at least partially) independent entities housed in one mind/body. Being plural, or plurality, is the state of having these multiple entities in one body. For a variety of reasons, sometimes a persons brain decides to divide itself up into different entities, or system members.

What.

You know how, in the show, Church splits off the AI fragments into different parts of himself? That is based off a real thing called dissociative identity disorder/DID. (in the show they use the term multiple personality disorder, which is just the outdated term for it). Real people also have this disorder, or have an otherwise similar experience of being plural/a system.

So you're a system?

Yes! How exactly our system works isn't quite relevant here, but if you want to read a little more about our alters, you can do so here. (Note: alter is a synonym for system member that we prefer to use. Not all systems use this term, so try to use whatever term they use to refer to their own members).

What's a fictive?

A fictive is a type of introject, and an introject is a member of a system whose identity is based off something that exists externally from the system. Using RvB as an example again, you know Tex is her own person, but is also based off the memories of Allison? This makes her an introject, specifically a factive. A factive is an introject based off a real person in a system’s life (friends, family, celebrities, etc), while a fictive is an introject based off a fictional character.

And you're a fictive?

I, meaning the alter who uses this blog the most frequently, ghost, am a fictive of Church. So my identity is basically that of Leonard Church. Kind of. It's a lot more complicated than that in reality. The most important thing to remember is that I'm an actual person, and I'm not fictional. So please just treat me like a normal person.

What are exomemories?

Exomemories (sometimes also called pseudomemories, though that term should only be used for those who say they prefer it) are memories that a system member might have that did not actually occur to the mind/body that they're in. Often times fictives, and also just alters in general, can come into the system kind of like… “pre loaded” with a life and memories. You know how, in Blood gulch, Church talked about how he went to high school with Tex and other such memories with her? These did not happen in reality, but he still remembers them occurring. Similarly when I came into the system, I came with all the memories of being Leonard Church in Blood Gulch, etc. Other alters in our system may or may not have their own exomemories, and may or may not feel comfortable sharing them.

What is Front?

If an alter is in front or fronting, it means they are in control of the body. Related terms are co-fronting, meaning multiple alters are in control of the body at the same time, and co-conscious (shortened cocon), meaning an alter isn’t in control of the body but is still present and aware of what is happening.

Is it rude to ask to speak to a specific alter?

This is something that varies from system to system. For us, you are free to send messages and ask questions of specific alters. In fact, it means a lot to us when you do! However, note that we do not control who fronts when. There’s a good chance your message won’t be responded to for months. Do not ask us to have specific alters front on your schedule.

To the Church that sent in an ask a lil while ago: we have a Tex in our system who already knows their Church but would still be happy to talk to you if you ever feel like chatting with someone. As an actual kinfession: Season 19 wrapped things up so beautifully for our Tex fictive and they are super happy that the ending lined up basically perfectly with the one concrete memory they actually had that was important to them. It's been making us a little sad that the finale has been kind of unloved :(

anyways my osdd having ass really sat here, thinking about rvb (as i tend to do right around this time of year because it’s getting to be rvb season), watching season 10 because it’s a good season (and I wanted to yell about Xi on discord but needed timestamps), and as Epsilon is joking about the fragments, I laughed and went “Oh wow, he’s a DID icon.”

And then proceeded to lose my shit.

I’ve read so many fics. So many. And, granted, it’s been a second since I last read some RVB fic, but I’ve never seen someone take that approach for Church.

The fragments? Boom, they’re alters now. He’s the Alpha system. Metastability thing with Sigma? It’s an alter trying to gain mass integration within the system because he wants to be the host, is convinced that he can protect the body better if that were the case.

The fragments getting EMPed? It’s a ton of integration into the system, and an entirely different host as a whole.

(and god it’d be interesting to see the evolution of epsilon as he changes as a person, he goes from an alter who’s only fronted a few times to suddenly being the host, he’s not really sure who he is but he’s relearning it all, and hey- at least he still has Delta and Theta)
