I js came across a post of someone ragging on nonsharing selfshippers, and I have something that I’ve always thought about that I think I should say.

I genuinely believe that people who rag on nonsharing selfshippers have some kind of ableist undertone. They are always like, “They’re delusional! They are way too obsessed with their f/o(s)! Why do they think they OWN a fictional character?”

First of all, we are not delusional.. that is probably one of the most ableist things you can say to someone especially if they ACTUALLY have delusions. Selfshipping can vary in many different levels, and it is so stupid how you can find a sharing selfshipper who is just as dedicated to their f/o(s) as a nonsharing selfshipper, and people would choose to call the nonsharing selfshipper delusional.

Not to mention, have any of you considered that the reason they’re so obsessed with their f/o(s) is because they are coping with something or have a hyperfixation on said character? Like, have Yall not heard of that specific character helping with their mental health..? And that maybe that character is the only thing they have that makes them happy….?? Or that the selfshipper is neurodivergent and just have very big hyperfixations on the character…….?????

And truly, we do NOT believe that we “own” our f/os. I gen don’t know where y’all got that from. “Your f/o would think you’re toxic with how possessive you are!” Or maybe.. my f/o wouldn’t want randos flirting with them either. Maybe my f/o is also jealous and doesn’t want me with anyone else either. Or MAYBE you should just get outta my business..?

Basically, I believe that nonsharing selfshipper haters are ableist because they just use ableist insults and can’t seem to take it into consideration that people with mental health problems use such things to cope and just don’t like to see their f/o with other people. It can put them in a horrible place mentally, and for some reason people just lack compassion in such areas. As a nonsharing selfshipper, I was once in a place surrounded by doubles and people who shipped my f/os with other characters and it was genuinely so triggering to me that I was put into a horrible mental space and hurt a bunch of people and myself.

This is not an excuse for my behavior, but it is definitely a reason for people to set boundaries and other people to stay out of our business. You don’t know what someone could be going through, and even if they are being an ass, do NOT use it as an excuse to rag on their attachment to their f/os. That loops every nonsharing selfshipper into this toxic rhetoric and gives people the impression that they can be ableist simply because of our mental problems, coping mechanisms, and hobbies. If there is a nonsharing selfshipper who HAPPENS to be a wiener, please just block and move on, do not go around telling everyone how horrible nonsharers are just because of some bad apples.

TLDR; I believe that nonsharing selfshipper haters are ableist because of their petty reasons, because they dealt with SOME bad apples, and because they can’t mind their own business.

Under the cut for length but... Some musings on how the fandom treats Heavy. TW for fatphobia and discussion of life under the Soviet Union.

(BTW this is the stuff I posted on Discord a while ago. Somewhat ranty but... I just love that dude. I do complain about an artist in this fandom, but PLEASE do not harass them. I do not name them, this is my silly personal opinion.)

I hate how the fandom treats Heavy... He's got such deep lore but all the fans are like "SO FUNNI! STUPID FAT POOTIS COMMIE HUEHUE!"He's none of those things but they've turned him into the butt of the joke. He's a hardcore badass who gets so little appreciation at all. He has a PHD but he's constantly depicted as a dumbarse.

Heavy isn't a communist at all, and his father was killed by the regime. Sorry if I piss off any whiny tankies who get mad at me for dissing a nuclear military superpower that killed millions of people, but the Soviet Union was a brutal dictatorship and generally not a good place to live (shocking! I know!) . Heavy was sent to a GULAG. A work camp. He risked his life to break his family out and free the prisoners, but does anybody care? Nope! Let's make soviet themed cosmetic #283027192 because original funni joke!

The entire fandom on Tumblr seems to ignore Heavy too. He only really shows up in Tumblr tags as "Medic's boyfriend" and they're happy to give him depth... As long as he's just Medic's golden retriever BF. I see so much fanart where he's this big aggressive alpha-daddy but that's not him around Medic either. Heavy is fierce and will gladly tear someone's arms off, but he's not just a brute. He's an intellectual. He really does care for the people he loves. And for the rest of the fandom, he's the butt of a joke. Big, fat, stoopid pootis man.

Valve gave us this incredibly intelligent, deep, creative character and despite all the fat jokes in-game (then again all the Mercs talk shit about each other) he has so much character development that just gets overlooked unless he's either kissing someone else or getting memed. I'm used to SFMs and memes having him as "dumbass fatty" because half of them were made by teenage boys before the comics were made (and they probably didn't know about the Russian translation where Heavy talks like an academic at times), but having Nice Tolerant Tumblr treat him as just "someone's boyfriend" is just as insulting.

There's this one AU by this artist I blocked where he's literally a Mafia boss Alpha Daddy with a cigar, and Medic as his twink femboy boyfriend. That's not him. You're sticking two middle aged men onto the 🥺🗿generic yaoi template. He's not a soft ball of butter but he's not the cruel, brutal classic Heavy either. He really is like a bear like his description says, as people either see him as a funny toy or a big aggressive beast. He loves his family and does this job FOR them, but he's also strong and fierce.

I could go deeper. I could talk about fandom fatphobia and how the only way he's consistently sexualised is as a huge angry muscular dominant, rather than general sex appeal like the other mercs. Lots of NSFW fanart ignores his belly, and just makes him beefy. There are few fics he has (Him and Demo have so few good fics on AO3). He's left out of "Mercenary boyfriend" scenarios on Wattpad. Sure, a 57 year old, 300lb balding Siberian mercenary who's in love with his gun isn't to everyone's taste, but none of the Mercs are conventionally "handsome". I couldn't see any of them modelling underwear for Calvin Klein. I love Medic, I love the ship between him and Medic, but I hate how the fandom treats Heavy as just an extension of him.

He wrestled a bear bare-handed. Sure, he's big. He's overweight. But I'd bet he's in better health and fitness than any of us here. Some people in this fandom literally cannot turn their brains on and actually think of why Heavy night look how he does (appearance and fatness is not a moral failure btw), they just think he's uggo and thus just a joke.

Thing is... He's not even "just" fat! He's overweight and plus-sized, but look at what he does all day. He runs around with a 150kg minigun and several rounds of ammo, alongside a bulletproof vest and TINY legs. He has a strongman's body type which is mostly thick muscle with a layer of fat. He's big, and he certainly has body fat, but he's arguably in great shape for someone over 50 who's most likely lived through several famines. Heavy being fat does not mean he is unhealthy in these circumstances.

He is arguably the best husband out of all the Mercs. Not a pyromaniac or a drunk, not immature, doesn't like his job TOO much, doesn't have lead poisoning or a god complex, doesn't love building killing machines and won't cheat on you with Scout's mama.

Oh mann... I love him. He needs so much more love. And I wish the fandom would love him too

so i wanted to rant about this like an hour ago because of the way i am as a person, but didn't want to latch onto a reblog. so i'm making my own post about this!

now one of my main problems with the thumbnail paired with the title is the fact that things like "oc x canon," "yume," and "f/o" are slapped in there. maybe it's just my stupid ass, but it's sort of coming across as the act of selfshipping itself and the vocabulary used along with it is "going too far."

that's the BASICS of selfshipping. those terms are used in perfectly normal contexts. there is rarely, maybe even never, a time when those terms have gone too far.

next. i'll admit, i did not watch the video. i don't plan to for this rant. but apparently, it is about situations in which selfships had become ACTUALLY harmful to those involved.

so the thumbnail is very obviously clickbait.

but why?? the situations themselves would have been enough to get people talking, but tacking on innocent terms to get some views is at the very least, kind of just mean, and at the worst, actually harmful to our community!!

instead of churning out ragebait to get a few clicks, why can't you just make your thumbnails ACTUALLY interesting to draw people into what you have to say? because ragebait will only make people upset enough to drive them away.

i'm trying so hard not to go on a full rant but i'm so in love with akashi seijuro. there is literally no other for me. everything he does makes my heart twitch, listening to his voice is like listening to music for the first time as a baby. i genuinely know no other way than his, and i'm perfectly content with being in love with him for all eternity. he is so pretty, it's indescribable. i genuinely cannot put my feelings into words. everything he does makes me woe. and i'm not the type to fall easily. not at all. i mean, how could i know, if he was my first? but still, i'm really not the type to go around sharing love. i really do mean this. and when i'm with him, i can't help but act a bit distant due to how afraid i am of having this love consume me whole. but lately, it doesn't feel all that scary anymore. it really doesn't. as long as i'm by his side, everything is alright...at least that's how i see it.

I gotta rant about something. I don’t want to war with a fandom so I won’t name what game series this was but one thing that SERIOUSLY pissed me off when I had crushes on characters from that series was this stupid ass format:

Game 1: You can date and start a relationship with any character you want!

Game 2: Your relationship is non-canon, we paired your character for you, the character you liked is dating someone else actually.

Basically the devs had one specific character they *clearly* wanted you to relationship with, but instead of just locking your choice from the start and simply making it a non-self insert protagonist, they do this weird thing of erasing your choices from existence if you decided you liked another character more. Either that, or they shipped two of the characters and cut off your choices so you don’t get in the way of their favorite side ship.

What’s the point?! Why give people a choice in the first place if there were specific choices you didn’t like and specific ones you wanted people to make?! It’s not exactly a bad thing to have a linear story, it’s called consistency!

I dunno if anyone had this but like, this reminds me of that one friend you had when you were 10 years old. They have all these cool toys and they tell you to play with them, but then 3 minutes in they start making disgusted faces, take the toys away and just tell you to watch them. They didn’t tell you there was a certain way they wanted you to play with them, so you’re just sitting there confused not sure what just happened.

Ouughhh an au where Lyrica still works in the pet store they used to work in since 2004 (lore drop) until the future when Tord takes over the world as Red Leader. One day he comes in, demands for the best worker and they keep sending every employee out but all of them are rejected by Red Leader for not being good enough, until Lyrica comes up and does everything he says and in the way he wants them to. He was able to do it without messing up, without stumbling over their words, and was able to please Red Leader.

So basically Red Leader demands that she comes with him and makes them his second in command. He finds out that they are very skilled in combat and incredibly strong, even doing a background check on them and finding out their “past”, but then develops feelings for him despite being in an arranged marriage (it is obviously not a healthy marriage as neither him nor his wife love each other). So the closer that Red Leader gets to them, the more in love he falls and soon enough Lyrica falls too.

Lyrica becomes a very successful soldier in the army who started helping making political decisions, and gets very close with Tord. Tords ‘wife’ noticed, but didn’t say anything as she was having an affair herself.

One day, when Lyrica and Tord were coming back from training, they caught his wife having her affair, but couldn’t give less of a shit because they weren’t in love anyway. That was how they decided to get divorced (secretly to keep it from the public), and Lyrica and Tord get married and Tord’s ex wife gets married to the one she had an affair with.

Tord and Lyrica live a happy married life as Tord is finally in a happy relationship, and they are actually very good friends with his ex wife who also has an even happier life with her new husband!!!!!
