💘 fake relationship / mutual pining / dared to kiss for erec and hector uwu
| 💘 fake relationship / mutual pining / dared to kiss oh boy oh boy! these two disasters!
It had been approximately one month since Erec had last been able to even catch sight of Hector.
One long, horrible month.
All because Sir Lancelot had learned of their mutual feelings and reacted...poorly. Ridiculously, in Erec's personal opinion. They were all adults in this situation, and Hector was the one who had initiated it in the first place! And yet Lancelot acted as though the very idea of his half-brother being within the same room as Erec was an affront! But he could hardly confront the man. The gap between their skills was too large to ignore and the prince of Dumnonia had little doubt an argument could quickly spiral into an unplanned duel.
Or joust.
But still, it was unbelievable!
So he had whined to Bors and Lionel, hoping one of the two could rein in their cousin's behavior. Only for Lionel to simply laugh at his plight and Bors... Bors had met his gaze with that unnerving stare of his and asked just one thing.
"Are you a coward who will merely give up and roll over rather than being clever, Sir Erec?"
Which brought him to his current predicament. Clinging to the ivy that climbed the walls of Tintagel Castle, hoping desperately that his feet didn't slip as he climbed towards what he knew was Hector's window. Finally his fingers managed to grip the windowsill, hauling himself up...
And right into Hector's awaiting arms with a surprise yelp.
"I was wondering when you were going to come by, my sweet prince, but typically one comes through the door!" Hector laughed, sweeping Erec into an embrace he could only return with just as much eagerness, laughing breathlessly himself.
"Yes, well, I had to be clever to get around your brother, sunshine," Erec sighed, cupping Hector's cheeks in his hands. "Forgive me for taking so long?"
"You are forgiven... if you kiss me already."
Well, who was he to deny that?
Erec laughed, pressing his lips to the other man's without delay, swallowing his pleased sigh. It had been too long for both of them, he supposed, as they sank to the floor, unwilling to part for more than the second it took to breathe.

"If I were to go and fetch [my arms], I might never chance upon the night again, for he is galloping away. I must follow him at once."
Okay, makes sense.
"Lady, I can delay no longer. I must follow the knight. Off I go. To God I commend you." And more than five hundred times the queen similar commended him to God to protect him from harm.
Um. I feel like that might take more time than just galloping back to the castle.

Thoughts:
Ah yes, Nabon the Enchanter A.K.A. Mabon ap Modron A.K.A. Mabonagrain. Silly Bors, of course Erec knows all about him! He's his wife's cousin's boyfriend that she imprisoned in an enchanted garden for some reason.
I think I keep seeing this repeated with a lot of sorceresses throughout Arthuriana: every sorceress - from Brisen, to Sebile, to Hellawes, etc. - is always described in superlative terms, as "knows more about magic than any other woman ever, etc." It's almost like it's the gender-flipped version of the "Older Knight Heroes (Kay, Gawain, Arthur, etc.) get defeated by the Newer Cooler Knights Heroes (Percival, Lancelot, Segurant, etc.)" trope.
So, Erec's mom is a sorceress, who gives him Uber Magic Immunity. This is very curious to me because i recall during Erec and Enide, Chretien makes a note that Enide doesn't use magic to arm Erec:
Tumblr media
I do love to headcanon that Enide does know a bit of Enchantment, despite her immediate family's substantial poverty. But once she's married to Erec, she finally gets a better chance to learn more through Queen Guinevere, her cousins, and now, her new mother-in-law. (Because, lord knows, Crisea would probably want another sorceress to keep an eye on her knuckleheaded son)

March to Camelot #1: hunt
Sir Erec and Queen Guinevere in the woods

the entire beginning of Erec and Enide being that King Arthur wants to kill a special stag (and will also have to kiss the most beautiful maiden) is so funny because it devolves so heavily from that.
the story does stick to the the common set up of most arthurian romances in that Knight X goes on a quest and somehow ends up on three sub-quests as well, running into Knights Y and Z somewhere along the way (then there’s always like minimum two maidens involved). it’s just amusing that such an adventure started with Arthur wanting to go on a hunt.
the common set up does make me happy though because i just think it’s neat that such a repeated narrative can yield so many different stories that are all so entertaining, along with being adapted so many times that there are then even more stories. plus it itches my brain in a nice way because the stories are like Ol’ Reliable.
also shoutout to Yder, son of Nut.

On a scale from Dutch Arthuriana to German Arthuriana, how toxic/wholesome is the Kay/Gawain yaoi?
In Walewein ende Keye, Kay hates Gawain because Gawain claims that he would encounter more adventures in a year than all the other knights put together. Gawain sets out to punish Kay for doubting him. Where does this animosity come from between them? How do you interpret/write their relationship?

this may just be the sleep deprivation talking but I’ve decided that sir griflet is sexy now. everyone in camelot regardless of orientation has looked at him at least once and gone. huh. but then the moment passes and they’re just like. well that was weird. no one, least of all him, would believe that he is the common denominator for what arthurian lords and ladies find attractive.¹ listen listen listen. we can reasonably combine his character with that of sir givret from erec et enide² and if we consult the sacred texts³ it is apparent that givret is 1) fantastically short, 2) undeniably charming, and 3) roguishly intelligent. doesn’t that sound like someone else we know? BUT! but but but. griflet/givret is a shorter king than gawain AND not even half as problematic.⁴ why are we as a fandom sleeping on him. why weren’t enough people sleeping with him in medlit.⁵ when I’m finally able to draw him you’ll see what I’m talking about. you’ll all see.⁶
¹ effeminate men with beards. you agree.
² source: trust me bro aside from his bit in one romance givret’s practically just a name. whereas griflet is a whole ass guy and it would be FUN to smoosh em together let me have this
³ illustrated gerald morris novella written for an audience of five-year-olds
⁴ obligatory clarification because I’m a coward. I am #jesting and if gawain is indeed problematic (gawain. sir gawain from medlit. that gawain. him) it makes him hotter <3
⁵ I’m pretty sure he has a magic wife in jaufre (idk I haven’t read it yet) but that’s not enough for me. I want this man to be the protagonist of a series of trashy noir detective novels in which he always ends up bamboozling the villains through sheer luck & plucky intellect whilst effortlessly romancing a new side piece each book. you know what I mean.
⁶ I have a very vivid picture of him in my head (basically just the handsome Guatemalan man I met once at a bus stop) but it won’t translate to paper. so instead of practicing drawing I’m writing to convince you all how sexy griflet is. is it working.

wahoo. lizard kissin' tuesday.
By The Arm To The Altar (chapter 2)
[ch 1] [ao3]
Fandom: The Penumbra Podcast Relationships: Lord Arum/Rilla, Sir Damien/Rilla, Lord Arum/Sir Damien/Rilla Characters: Rilla, Sir Damien, Lord Arum, The Keep, Rilla's Parents Additional Tags: Second Citadel, Lizard Kissin’ Tuesday, Alternate Universe, Alternate Universe - Arranged Marriage, (another au in which peace between the citadel and monsters is tenuously arranged.......), (im going insanecrazy about it tbqh), (also hello again rilla's dads!!! hi!!!! i love you!!!!), (i'm not going to feel weird about inventing them from whole cloth anymore since canon... is bad), Forbidden Love, (sortaaaaa lol), Childhood Friends, inevitable polyamory, (because duh.), (RILLA'S PARENTS ARE STILL ALIVE AND PRESENT) Summary: Peace between the humans of the Second Citadel and monsterkind has never been closer, and when the chance to seal an alliance comes in the form of a political marriage, neither the Lord of the Swamp nor the daughter of the ambassadors between the two factions could possibly refuse. They were friends as children, after all. Surely they'll get along perfectly well now.. Notes: There is so much worldbuilding and setup in this that is NOT elaborated on but i HOPE is clear pretty quickly. i knew i'd NEVER get around to actually writing any of it if i got caught in the weeds of establishing the universe lol. sorry not sorry welcome to Yearning Town, after a pit stop in Frustration! title from the song Hair To The Ferris Wheel by Lady Lamb, and,,, idk i'm fully on a lady lamb kick really. Lots of vibes, lots of applicable dynamics up in here. Chapter Summary: A courier can deliver more than one message at a time. Chapter Notes: arum is such a beautiful disaster of a creature :) happppyyyy LKT. (ps pls don't mention the length of my absence or it might send me into a tailspin i don't want to think about my failures lmao. please.)
~
Nearly everything is prepared, by now. Or- Arum thinks so, at least. Humans have lived in the Keep before, so he has some idea what to expect, what they are likely to need. However... Arum's old subjects, so to speak, seem different, worlds different, than the idea of-
Amaryllis. Just Amaryllis. Or- Lady Amaryllis, as she will be, he supposes. But- only her, without her fathers accompanying. Without Arum's-
Rather, the ambassadors Erec and Jonquil will not be staying longer than simply for the wedding itself, of course. The end of the war will be an indescribably busy time for them, as two of the most hardworking architects of the impending peace. And Arum never expected for things to go back to the way they were, briefly, when he was young. That would be absurd for any number of reasons.
"Gossip is, m'lord, that your betrothed is less than pleased with you."
Arum feels his frill twitch. "Hmph."
"She's... ah..." the faun pauses, and Arum impulsively glances over in time to watch Hopskip raise an eyebrow. "Pissed?"

I wanna start reading Arthurian…..where should I begin
*rubs hands* oh excellent
I'd say one way would be to pick characters or events you'd like to read about the most and start with the texts focusing on them. @fuckyeaharthuriana has a lot of lists of different works, including those sorted by character (links in the blog description). Then, if you decide you enjoy Arthuriana in general, you can move to other texts. Another way would be to start with something well-known and short. I believe Sir Gawain and the Green Knight fits the bill well. The translation linked is more like an example, because there's a lot of them, and I frankly don't know which to suggest best; the one I read is by Bernard O’Donoghue, but I can't find it online. I've also heard very good things about Tolkien's translation - understandable, because duh, Tolkien - but haven't read it (yet). The works of Chrétien de Troyes are also very good and readable and imo very well represent what a medieval romance is. My favourite is Yvain: Knight of the Lion, and I haven't read his Perceval yet, but I liked all the other of his romances too. (Ok, maybe not Erec and Enide, but that's because I found the main character very annoying)
I've compiled a small list of Arthurian texts I recommend before when answering a similar ask, and I still stand by it, except, taking into account what I've read since then, I'd also add La Tavola Ritonda - an Italian Arthurian romance mostly focused on Tristan and Isolde, weird and violent but also very enjoyable, in my opinion, Parzival (vol. 1, vol. 2) by Wolfram Von Eschenbach - a German romance and my favourite version of the Grail story so far, and Lancelot-Grail aka the Vulgate Cycle + the Post-Vulgate. I'm not sure starting with the latter is a good idea, though, because it's five huge volumes, very readable (except for The History of the Holy Grail. You can skip that, if you ask me) and with a great impact on the later Arthurian texts, including Le Morte d'Arthur, but HUGE, it took me half a year, lol. (Le Morte is also long and often drier in style, but still not THAT long). But I simply had to mention it because it's such a foundational work. A part of the Vulgate Cycle has been adapted by Patricia Terry and Samuel N. Rosenberg as Lancelot and the Lord of the Distant Isles or, The Book of Galehaut Retold. It's short and beautiful, and you don't need to be familiar with the rest of the Vulgate to read it.
Oh, and if you're interested in more modern retellings, Idylls of the Queen by Phyllis Ann Karr is an episode from Le Morte d'Arthur retold as a murder mystery solved by Kay and Mordred, and it's amazing. Also The Squire's Tales series by Gerald Morris is a lot of fun, kind of for a younger reader but very well-written and funny, even though some of his choices regarding certain characters drive me up the wall a little bit.
Also, here's a great site by @tillman with a lot of links to various Arthurian texts!
