Writing Advice

Writing is hard, so please take this piece of writing advice as a loving little pat on the shoulder, okay?

When you use the verb tense "sat" you don't use a helping verb.

Clint sat on his couch, sipping his whiskey. (correct)

Clint was sat on his couch, sipping his whiskey. (incorrect)

I see this mistake all the time and, yep, it's because English is a fucked up crazy language that has two verbs like sit and set that are super easy to mix up.

Sit = present tense, means to be resting (for a person, it means the seat of the pants are in the seat of the chair).

Set = present tense, means to put something somewhere

Clint's bow sits on the ground next to him. (it's already there)

Clint set his bow on the ground next to him. (the act of putting it down)

Sat is the past tense of sit.

Clint sat quietly, thinking about his life.

The past tense of set is ... set.

He set the bow there yesterday.

I could go into the big explanation of how sit comes from the intransitive Old English world sitten (which once DID have set as a past tense, but that's disappeared) and set comes from Old English settan (a transitive verb) with a detour into the proto-Germanic setjan (sit) and (bi)satejanan (set), but I won't bore you with the specifics. The easy answer is

sat doesn't use a helping verb

and you're almost always right.

You can just ignore this if this is off topic or anything, but it's kind of wild for me to see people describe the Tenma siblings dynamic as unrealistic and the Shinonome siblings dynamic to be the true sibling experience. The Tenma family's friendly relationship and struggles with communication are more relatable to my family, so it's always entertaining (and slightly concerning? are you all okay?) to see people talk about setting their brothers on fire.

I definitely don't with the idea that Ena is abusive or whatever, she isn't and that's how they are. But like the culture shock that sibling discussions in this fandom gave me is crazy lmfao

Nah you’ve got a point like all the siblings in the game have their own share of communication issues, even the side character siblings, and it isn’t really fair to compare them in the way the generalised fandom does?. I don’t think any of them are unrealistic either like they’re all different types of families that exist in real life.

I think the reason a lot of people say that is because the Shinosibs have maybe one of the most common rl sibling dynamics that isn’t reflected in media (esp animedia from what I know?) a whole lot compared to siblings who are really close and affectionate (i.e what the Tenma siblings have). Even then despite being the “close and affectionate” siblings of the game, as said there’s definitely a lot of facets to their relationship, it’s not flat “they care about each other”, and they do have communication issues occasionally (Hinamatsuri) just like the Hinomori sisters and Shinonome siblings have.

Why Gabriel From Supernatural being alive would've been sick as fuck and you can pry it from my burning corpse

I'd like to start by saying I 100% understand why they killed off Gabriel from supernatural because if that mother fucker lived and the Winchester's somehow made Gabriel's side theirs instead of his own (or at least had them overlap substantially), and they would've because the Winchesters have this weird charm/luck that keeps making these ultra powerful beings fight for them/on their side, half of the show wouldn't have happened because they had a mf archangel in their corner. But also do you ever think about if he did? Because I do, all the time, I have almost the entire show rewritten, where nobody I love dies and also I'm there because ya boy's delulu and escapism is his favorite past time.

Castiel about to devour all of purgatory? Not on Gabriel's watch are you insane? He'd show up with the "Okay seriously though, playtimes over little brother." Right Before Castiel started his ritual at his other undisclosed location because "Big Brothers know everything" and there's no way his baby brother can hide from him. Because it's Supernatural there would've been an epic fucking battle, and because older = stronger, the underdogs (more specifically the Winchesters) win, and big plans being foiled by unlikely forces in Supernatural lore and because this time Gabriel's fighting for the Winchester's he'd win and make a quip with his stupid shit eating grin that I love and carry Cas over his shoulder like a bag of fucking potatoes marching both their asses back to the Winchesters.

Knocking out Crowley and scaring off Raphael as he does so because holy shit that's one raging archangel and his blade is already being thrown between his eyes because Castiel explained everything during their fight and after what Raphael was doing he was ready to kill him. He also actively tried to kill his free will favorite baby brother and also Castiel is knocked the fuck out over their brothers shoulder and the Winchesters are here too? No. He wouldn't win. Best case he can't leave another epic battle and the three of them kill Raphael while Crowley barely gains enough consciousness to dip out therefore giving Cass no more reason to crack open purgatory. Though Crowley probably will or it could still be cracked open from Cas' unfinished ritual if you want to see Gabriel interact with Dick because I do I so do.

I think the other reason I don't really get into ships as portrayed by fandom culture is that it seems like the mindset is more like. "I want these characters to be in a Romantic Relationship(TM)" instead of "I want these characters' relationship to be romantic"

What I mean here is that, so often I see pairings enacting romance tropes to the point of heavily altering or downright replacing their original dynamic - as if the people behind it only understand romance as a series of checklists to tick off. Couples like to kiss and sleep in the same bed and flirt with each other, so it doesn't matter who the characters are, if they're a couple then naturally they'll do those things, right??

And that's where the whole thing starts to lose me, because I would assume that the appeal of shipping characters is, y'know... the characters? Rather than just, the idea of a couple? If I'm thinking about how it'd be cool for them to be in love, my first thought is always "so how would they show it," because just like everything else about a person, the answer is going to be different on a case-by-case basis.

Maybe the characters involved aren't really into kissing, but they like arranging date activities. Maybe they aren't committed to the structure of dating at all, and just want to be around each other whenever they can. And even if they are the types to like doing traditionally romantic things, that doesn't suddenly erase whatever else they had going on before they started adding that on top of it.

I'm not saying that the more typical romance tropes and activities are bad, just that they're applied kind of excessively, regardless of whether or not they actually work for the characters involved. I want to see my favorite characters having relationships that are true to who they are, not what the stock depiction of a couple says they should be.

The way mothers allow themselves to treat their daughters is already fucked up enough but when their kid is a trans man/masc it just gets so much worse. I’m literally not allowed baggy clothes, the simple and normal act of wearing baggy clothes, which is banned for me in particular because they don’t ��frame my figure.” I should only be wearing clothes that cling to my body and show off my hips, and this is because my mum has some weird idea that if my “feminine form” isn’t on show at all times, I will turn into a masculine weirdo because I’ve already expressed my transness to her before and she’s doing everything in her power to stop it, and therefore I’m not even allowed the option of wearing baggy, loose fitted clothing. This is such a small example of the long list of things I’m not allowed to do in order to keep me from transitioning, but even something that small is incredibly fucked up to me because the level of control in forcing me to wear clothes that show off my “female” body to snuff out any masculinity is 100 times worse when you throw in the fucking immeasurable, painful dysphoria that I have to deal with by walking outside in clothes that basically have a neon sign over them telling people to look at the least favourite parts of my body.

And this is apparently normal, because mothers just want their daughters to be proud of who they are. And if those “daughters” happen to be trans men, it’s only in their best interest to detransition them back into daughters. Or whatever the fuck excuse we’ve given to them to treat their kids this way.
