i believe that my appreciation of post-apocalyptic literature is derived from that i am reading about a world defined by suffering and comprehend + often agree with the authors intent to relate this to reality (you've maybe read that post about how post-apocalyptic lit is not meant to predict the future, but rather criticize the present?) but i also recognize that i am reading a book. if am engaging in art, there is definitive purpose to human existence. its just a calming juxtaposition that reminds me that the inherent pain of living is worthwhile

teoria: After 5 years in Tolkien's World, thanks to this phrase of Elrond, I asked myself the question: could Sauron invade the Consciousness of Gil Galad? Could he take over GG's mind like Galadriel and make the king's nightmares with "really" 👇🏼

Galadriel is definitely stronger morally, etc. at least a little than Gil Galad and Kirdan, Celebr. I Saw the TV Glows recites a cautionary tale of betraying one's self. It tells the story of two suburban adolescents who bond over a tacit recognition of ‘wrongness’ representing the realization of being transgender. Tara, the second of the two teens, claws their way out of the metaphorical coffin they were buried alive in as they experiment with names and pronouns. They do not know which way is up or down or how far it is to the surface, but they know they are killing themselves by ignoring this fundamental truth. Owen, however, is terrified of the internal revolution of accepting theirself so stays buried. This repression is unnervingly terrifying, earning I Saw the TV Glow's label as an art house horror film.

The horror genre habitually represents transformation as grotesque. It expects audiences to be repulsed upon seeing a once familiar body twist and deform into something unrecognizable. I Saw the TV Glow reverses this by instead focusing on the horror of stagnation, of being a deer in the headlights too afraid of the unknown that is the everpresent byproduct of transformation and growth. The movie strays from the horror cliche of transgender identities being portrayed by the process of becoming monstrous, rather depicting seeing the true self and knowing that the current self is the monster. And choosing to look away, to stay the monster. It is unsettlingly despairing and despairingly unsettling, and is one of the most poignant reflections on identity to grace 21st century cinema.
