trying a very different approach to color ala tim mcburnie style and it's making me melt. figured i'd share it bc Idk it's more complicated but I like the way it's making me think/plan

thumbnail and rough sketch that i liked so much i turned it into....

and then made several color thumbnails/messed around w them for awhile

until finally settled on this one

and then

so the current foliage lines look like this and they're on 11 different layers (i'll merge some to be back, mid and forground in a bit)

(i also started on solas' head just ignore it for now)

and next step is really spend more time on the construction layer for lavellan and the wolf statue (solas is ready to be lined bc i drew him first)

then color with flats using quick masks instead of by hand like i'm used to c:

this is all wayyyy more layers than i'm used to but I do kind of like it so far; particularly the color thumbnail and construction layer/phase part

I’ve been seeing a lot of confusion around this lately so if your on artfight and you don’t know how to make thumbnail PFPs here’s how I do it without like, losing some of the quality atleast LMAO

Or I just resize an existing PFP of mine down to 200x200 lol

first Image:

contrast simple form vs complicated form

everything leads up to the womans face because

place of rest for the eyes(no complicated texture/pattern)

eye contact with viewer

the man acts as a "Don't look" area because of his little interest(him looking away,being mostly black-> acting as a shadow)

second image:

round light as frame -> going out of frame makes it dynamic!(also has the feel of a spotlight on stage)

rim light to make the subject more readable,especially in the darker areas

suit makes for a strong form and silhouette

third image:

using a lighter pattern to differentiate between the black garment and the black backround

strong silhouette(especially at the head part)

lines lead up to the face,the tie acts like a black arrow pointing towards the face

face again as "resting place" for the eyes(stands in contrast to all the patterns on the body)

writing research is fun because every so often it takes you to a place where you never imagined you’d be learning about something that you never exactly wanted to learn about & it’s like. wow. this is A hobby I’ve chosen isn’t it. Hm. but I love it
