This checks out! According to the United States Mint (the bureau of the Department of the Treasury responsible for producing coinage for the United States):
a modern dime (tenth-dollar, $0.10) weighs 0.08 ounces (2.268 grams),
a modern quarter-dollar ($0.25) weighs 0.20 ounces (5.670 grams), and
a modern half-dollar ($0.50) weighs 0.40 ounces (11.340 grams).
As there are 16 ounces in a pound, all three coins are indeed worth $20 per pound (or a little over $44.092 per kilogram). Inversely, they weigh 5 pounds (or 2.26796185 kilograms) per hundred dollars. Thus, any mixture of these three coins has the same value-per-mass, regardless of the individual proportions of each coin in the mix.
Regrettably, the penny ($0.01, 0.088 ounces or 2.5 grams), nickel ($0.05, 0.176 ounces or 5 grams), and dollar coins ($1.00, 0.2857 ounces or 8.1 grams) do not follow this pattern. If they did, the penny would need to weigh 0.08 ounces (0.2268 grams, or about a quarter of the mass of a typical paperclip), and a dollar coin would weigh 0.8 ounces (22.68 grams, or about half the mass of a golf ball).
so i just learned something really fucked up about US coinage...
a quarter weighs EXACTLY 2.5 times as much as a dime.
as a consequence, quarters and dimes have the same value-to-mass ratio.
and this ratio? $20/lb.
this means that a pound of any mix of quarters and dimes is worth exactly $20.

A discussion of gas narcosis on midwatch lead to the most ridiculous unit conversion I have ever done. See, anchor chains are measured in shots. One shot is 90 feet. Each thirty feet of water is equivalent to one additional atmosphere of pressure, so a shot is 3 atmosphere of pressure. A (very) rough rule of thumb is that each atmosphere of pressure is equivalent to one alcoholic drink. Thus, one shot is equivalent to three margaritas.
I know people on tumblr looove stories of underwater cave diving, but I haven't seen anyone talk about nitrogen narcosis aka "raptures of the deep"
basically when you want to get your advanced scuba certification (allowing you to go more than 60 feet deep) you have to undergo a very specific test: your instructor takes you down past the 60+ foot threshold, and she brings a little underwater white board with her.
she writes a very basic math problem on that board. 6 + 15. she shows it to you, and you have to solve it.
if you can solve it, you're good. that is the hardest part of the test.
because here's what happens: there is a subset of people, and we have no real idea why this happens only to them, who lose their minds at depth. they're not dying, they're not running out of oxygen, they just completely lose their sense of identity when deep in the sea.
a woman on a dive my instructor led once vanished during the course of the excursion. they were diving near this dropoff point, beyond which the depth exceeded 60 feet and he'd told them not to go down that way. the instructor made his way over to look for her and found a guy sitting at the edge of the dropoff (an underwater cliff situation) just staring down into the dark. the guy is okay, but he's at the threshold, spacing out, and mentally difficult to reach. they try to communicate, and finally the guy just points down into the dark, knowing he can't go down there, but he saw the woman go.
instructor is deep water certified and he goes down. he shines his light into the dark, down onto the seafloor which is at 90 feet below the surface. he sees the woman, her arms locked to her sides, moving like a fish, swimming furiously in circles in the pitch black.
she is hard to catch but he stops her and checks her remaining oxygen: she is almost out, on account of swimming a marathon for absolutely no reason. he is able to drag her back up, get her to a stable depth to decompress, and bring her to the surface safely.
when their masks are off and he finally asks her what happened, and why was she swimming like that, she says she fully, 100% believed she was a mermaid, had always been a mermaid, and something was hunting her in the dark 👍

Doylist explanation: points about how UNIT is being treated this series aside, Doctor Who is very much a family show, and children in the audience, particularly trans children, BAME children, and disabled children, need to see themselves on television in white/cis/abled/male dominated fields like science. It makes sense to have Rose Noble and Morris Gibbons at UNIT
Watsonian explanation: Mrs Flood is a space investigator sent to shut down UNIT for potential violations of child labour laws

you guys know that one Nicktoon Unite piece Izbubbles made where Manny said:
Tumblr media
Now I headcanon that Manny has a thing for hair pulling and it isn’t inheriting sexual - he just likes touching and tugging Danny’s hair if they’re cuddling/doing pda or if he’s stressed or having an anxiety attack and Danny doesn’t mind.
Danny might also learn to be kinda into it - like, Manny doesn’t pull that hard but it’s still so mortifying when he remembers how his stupid boyfriend blurted that out.

Maryam Khatoon Molkara was an Iranian transgender woman, born in 1950. Largely due to her efforts, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini issued a fatwa in 1987 that gender affirmation surgeries were not against Islamic law. Today, the Iranian government officially recognizes trans women as women, allowing them to: live as women until they can afford surgery (and helps pay for surgery), undergo gender-affirming surgeries, receive all birth certificates and other documents issued in a manner that reflects their gender identity, and even marry men (in a country where homosexuality can still be punished by death).
Interestingly, it was on a trip to London in 1975 that Maryam “learned about transsexuality and realized I was not a passive homosexual”. And that fascinates me because I had almost the exact same experience in the early 2000’s when I attended one of the bigger gender-cons and met gay drag queens for the first time. It took all of about 15 minutes of chatting with those gorgeous, effeminate gay men to realize we were not the same after all. That experience rewrote my impression of my self and my situation.
I’m not writing this entry in praise of LGBT rights in Iran. Far, far from it. But I find it interesting that one of the most hard-line, conservative regimes in the world has managed to find a set of policies with more acknowledgement, grace and individual liberty in this regard than those that appear to be espoused by the current US federal government.

At night in the washroom
Thanks to @eliasgold20 for the inspiration. He appears later in the story as a drone, but that's just my thanks to him. HE is still solely a Bro. Defender #20 for the Golden team.
Tumblr media
At night in the laundry room of the dormitory building. A blond German youngling from the Golden Army Brotherhood sits alone on the waiting bench and stares at the rotating drum of the washing machine. The monotonous hum of the machine lulls him into dreams.
The drum that was turning behind the porthole seemed to become a rotating spiral. Moritz didn't know what was happening to him. He noticed that the spiral was putting a spell on him. He couldn't close his eyes or turn his head to free himself. So he had to keep staring into the washing machine and his eyes took on the spiral pattern. The hypnosis began.
Tumblr media
Now he also thought he was hearing voices from somewhere; words and sentences that were influencing his mind. He felt as if the words were melting his mind. Here too he could not resist. And so his mind melted away.
The hypnosis he fell into erased his entire mind. Even the ability to think for himself melted away with the process. His power to contradict was broken, complete obedience replaced his rebelliousness. Now he was completely without will. Was he still a humanoid, a human? No. The outer shell still reflected it, but he was no longer human. The whole shell? No! The head had also changed externally. Moritz used to be a funny guy, always up for jokes and pranks. As a result, he always had a mischievous grin. And now a completely empty expression on his face. His hair, which had previously looked a bit messy and wild, had now given way to a strict hairstyle. And his posture had also changed. Previously super cool and casual, it now showed more signs of an obedient, upright standing. There were still casual elements, he still put his hands in his pockets, but otherwise the behavior showed a lot of discipline.
All of these were signs that the droneification had been completed. It was now just a tool of the hive from which the drones would now receive instructions.
It was now a PDU, a Polo Drone Unit, but still in the old clothes, he had worn when he entered the laundry room.
Meanwhile, its washing machine signaled that the laundry was finished. And - oh wonder, not a single porthole of the other machines still showed a spiral pattern.
What was left of Moritz mechanically walked to the machine, opened the porthole. Looked into the drum. Paused. It was not surprised that its laundry was gone and that other items of clothing were now in its place. It ordered itself to take off everything except its underpants - then it took out of its washing machine - as if it were the most natural thing in the world - the components of its new clothes: black socks, black high-shine latex pants and of course THE black high-shine latex polo shirt. It also noticed a pair of black lace-up boots that were standing near the bench. After it had put these on too, it was perfectly dressed for PDU and ready to serve the Hive.
Tumblr media
Unnoticed, PDU-020 had entered the laundromat and was observing the transformation process in the background. Now that this had been completed, it approached the new drone and spoke mechanically:
"From now on you are a Polo Drone Unit, you no longer have a name. Names are complicated and inefficient. They hinder the control and administration by the Hive. A designation is perfectly sufficient. You are now PDU-153. That is the official designation. It must be more efficient. A number is enough! So, you are just a number, only a number, only 153! 020 will accompany 153 to the Hive. There, the training to become a (nearly) perfect PDU will continue.”
“Do you want to join? Contact our recruiters: @brodygold , @goldenherc9, or @polo-drone-001.”

I am (very predictably) thinking about the realm again, and I think I've figured out one of the places where the disconnect between the Kingdom's pov and the other factions is rooted.
Because everyone else sees the kingdom as cohesive, but Ros has pointed out herself that it often feels very lonely because everyone is doing their own thing - the kingdom are chronically addicted to the grind, after all. So it results in this situation where the kingdom are undeniably loyal to each other, but only really come together as a group when they need to protect each other or when they're doing something as a group away from other factions.
As a result, the Kingdom's view of each other becomes very different. Because they see their loyalty to each other, the versions of themselves that are safer as a group and secure in their relationships to each other. But most of the time, they aren't around each other when interacting with other factions. Nobody else in the faction is there for Owen insulting Blue, or Ros and Aimsey's conversations, or Sneeg killing Aimsey, just using examples from one day of streams!
So the kingdom only really see the idealized version of themselves, and they often miss the context for interacting with other factions, which creates that disconnect where members of the kingdom don't believe that other members of their faction would do things that they very much do and other factions see every action of any member as emblematic of the whole because the kingdom, lacking the context, will always default to taking their faction members' sides in a conflict.

SVSSS balls
Okay, horrible thought to do fake math and statistics on. (I'm not actually following the math too closely, feel free to riff, correct, vibe check, etc.)
balls are used as a measurement for two things in SVSSS
We have the character Six Balls, who was as big as six balls when he was born right? So, one ball should weigh (with a lot of hidden assumptions) about 16.7% of of the total weight of six balls. average weight for a baby is about 3.5 kg or 7.7ish lb.
Putting these facts together, one ball should weigh about 0.58 kg which I'm rounding up to 0.6 kg here because I've already introduced a lot of error with assuming demon babies would be roughly equivalent to human baby weights, and also that Six Balls was an average sized baby. He was named for his size after all, he could have been a premie or a chonker, we don't know.
Anyway, we still have no idea what these balls are made of and therefor no idea what the density is, which means we still cannot tell what size they are.
So in absence of that, I'm going to use the density of room temperature water because what I wanted to use was average density of a human body but that varies WILDLY but definitely includes neutral buoyancy in water.
So, 0.6 kg of room temperature water means 600 square centimeters of water which makes a sphere approximately 10.5 centimeters in diameter.
Which brings us to the other thing in SVSSS that gets measured in balls.
Binghe's cock.
The actual quote (seven seas translation anyway, don't know if it varies) talks about the circumference not diameter, but whatever.
At this point I invite you to find a ruler and compare the size of your fist to 10.5 cm.
...
Anyway for another angle, and ignoring the fact that body proportions are different in children or adults:
According to this website I didn't vet at all, the whole leg accounts for about 16-18% of body weight which lines up neatly enough with one sixth of body mass/size.
So we could also approximate the size of Binghe's dick as being like a newborn's leg.
So I'll leave you with those horrible mental images and go try to fill my brain with something else now.

Explanatory hypotheses of the ecology of new clinical presentations of Dissociative Identity Disorders in youth
This was published in 2022 and... please tell me no one else knew this paper existed? How have I never seen it before? I feel cheated. I feel like I just found out there's mean girls talking about our communities behind our backs.
I'm kind of speechless. I've highlighted the important bits, read those.
Abstract
Dissociative Identity Disorders (DIDs) are controversial psychiatric conditions encountered in clinical practice and nosology. DID, as described in the international classifications, has little similarity with the clinical picture of “DID” met in current youth psychiatry. From this perspective, we hypothesize that this current clinical presentation does not satisfy the categorical criteria of the international classifications. Based on the two terminological challenges related to the definition of DID (i.e., the notion of dissociative disorders and the different meanings of the term identity), we propose to differentiate two distinct entities from each other. The first is medical and listed in diagnostic criteria of international classifications; the second comes from popular culture and refers to the vast majority of clinical presentations received in daily clinical practice—presented under the term Dissociative Identity Conditions (DIC).
Pause, because I need that to sink in.
We've been downgraded.
I say "we," as if I'm including myself in this "youth" group. This article will tell you that it cannot be applied to adults.
But despite the fact that I'm (very) old, and despite that it explicity says it can't be applied to me, it does.
I feel personally attacked, despite my journey ending long before this applied to me. This tells me there's a flaw somewhere.
Since the status of DIC is a hot topic in current clinical psychiatry, we aim to identify eight possible explanations that can be provided to support its occurrence: (1) impact of iatrogenicity;
I need to stop right there and just... bask for a moment.
This article is about to tell you that your knowledge of DID is so good that you EDUCATED yourself into having a fake form of it.
There's no going back. We forge on.
(2) factors of suggestibility and desire for social acceptability; (3) psychoanalytic explanations; (4) neuropsychological explanations; (5) socio-cognitive explanations; (6) emotional labeling; (7) narrative explanations; (8) and transient illnesses explanations.
Let's pause again.
Let's think very hard for a second.
In conclusion, we sustain that DIC results from a narrative interpretation of medical discourse by popular culture, developing in patients presenting undeniable distress. Such a transient disease fits in an ecological niche, which echoes the values of society, persisting under the action of a need for narrative continuity of the self.
