MY ASK DIDNT GO THRU I THINK… if it did feel free to ignore LMFAO but!!!! 13, 9, 30 and 39 for the ud ask!!!!
It did get eaten.... thank you for resending!! imagine me highfiving you over ud asks!
9. Was there any character that you ended up not liking as much as you thought you would?
OH HUH..... i don't think so? I came into the game with barely any spoilers, so basically all my character impressions formed ingame! There's no one in the cast I dislike.... will say though that I've always been amused with my immediate obsession with chris since he is not in my top 3 most compelling characters of that cast lol. i just really enjoy him.
13. Which relationship was your favorite? (Platonic, romantic, or otherwise)
SO MANY OPTIONS....All 3 canon ones make me crazy, but I think i've probably read and drawn the most Chrashley stuff. i LOVE a good Cute Crush Dynamic undergoes the horrors, and i loveee the fact that they can very much Not have each other's back depending on how you play it! Its really fun that ash can be super unrepentant about The Prank and chris can fully choose josh over her and point a gun at her but as long as he doesnt shoot everything's good between them! Just a lot of wonderful, hidden fucked up depths here. #mrsbluebeard by tmbg
also this is 100% cheating but i have been really obsessing over the whole mike em matt jess web of dynamics lately.. that group has A LOT going on.
30. Any background information you wish we would have gotten about a character?
hmmmmm i feel like ud puts effort into sneaking a lot of hannah lore and personality into the game but beth.....I wish there were more twin clues about beth. we get a few minutes as her, and her relationship chart, but she still comes off with very little time/info.
For the rest of the cast though, I would love more family details and just general chatting about memories.... Will say though that I've been slowly reading The Almosts and have been pretty damn satisfied with the added stuff there!
39. Any opinion take about a ship you'd like to share?
OH UH.... I do agree that climbing class gets done in a lot of frustrating ways, and it took me a while postgame and a lot of chatting with @jackrackhams to find an angle that was fun for them! CLIMBING CHRASH ON THE OTHER HAND... Also i am notttt really a sam/josh shipper unless done in a way i really enjoy. also despite beth's status as a onedimensionalguymostly, i do think shipping her with sam precanon is fun and adds an interesting dimension to everything!

Hey SA I've just seen you reblogged a post about goodbyes in the show and I so would like to know your opnion on this. Do you think the cane scene was in character for John? Tbh I think his character was very OOC in S4 but I'd like to know your opinion on this. Yours are the only fanfic I read post-s4 I really trust you with my heart. Thank you!
Okay, just as a disclaimer, because I really, really don’t want anyone to think the opposite here, I absolutely love John Watson. Please don’t be confused about that. That said, he’s got some massive issues.
Unfortunately, I do see the cane scene as in character, but I’m also one of those annoying people that would say that there’s a huge range of what could be considered “in character” for every human, you know? I’m just as much myself when I’m being a total dick as when I’m being the best version of myself. One end of the spectrum is not truer than the other. John is just as much John when he’s doing that soft, gentle, tender gaze, like at Sherlock and Mrs Hudson in ASIB as he is when he’s physically hurting Sherlock. Unfortunately, they chose to draw out the ugliest aspects of John’s personality in series 4, showcasing his damage far more than his heroism and the beautiful soul that he also is underneath those trust issues and unspent, ultimately inward-pointing anger and guilt and sense of inadequacy. Walking out when things get difficult is very much consistent with his behaviour from series 1 forward: look at his little domestic with Sherlock in TGG: Sherlock is being insulting and difficult, and instead of trying to talk through it or ask deeper questions, or even just argue it out, John gets up and leaves.
I would say that it’s canon that he also left Mary after she shot Sherlock. I don’t see how anyone could possibly have maintained “months of silence” while occupying the same space. It just isn’t possible. For a few weeks, maybe, but months of genuine silence? No way. John wasn’t there. To his credit, and this is a big thing, John doesn’t stay mad. His capacity to handle things blowing up in his face is rather limited, but give him time and he’ll go back and give it another go. It took him 24 hours after Sherlock returned. Even when he thought the bearded old man was Sherlock playing a prank, he was laughing in spite of himself and clearly, overtly disappointed when it turned out not to be Sherlock. So he went back. The fact that it took him six months to return to Mary says a lot in terms of how reluctant he was to do it. I hate that he did it, but I get that the weight of his sworn word and the impending arrival of his child were the sole driving factors there, rather than love for Mary herself. His extreme reluctance and over promise of continuing anger during that scene hardly made for a cozy little reunion scene (I once saw an interview where Gatiss referred to it as “so tender and moving” or some crap like that, but that’s a rage post for another day!). The point is, given time to sort himself out, John goes back. He goes back to therapy even when he thinks it isn’t working. For all that Mrs Hudson had to bully him into it (he wasn’t ready and that wasn’t right!), John did finally agree to see and treat Sherlock. He would have gone back. That’s as much in his character as his preponderance for leaving is.
Furthermore, while it’s ugly that he leaves, I also find it entirely understandable. This is someone who has a history of familial issues, estranged from everyone except a sister, with whom he shares a barely-tolerated relationship. He was in an active war zone: say no more. His superior officer, on whom he clearly had at least a bit of a hero complex for (and I personally don’t see anything else there, but that’s also plenty!), let him down and shut him out. Life had already betrayed John over and over and over again by the point that he met Sherlock. And Sherlock, for all of his intellectual brilliance, had never allowed himself to have a relationship so close that he might actually want to consider the other person’s feelings. He was clumsy and a slow learner and I think it took him a long time to see that John’s feelings needed better care than he was equipped to understand or give at the time. Their shared sense of inappropriate humour always had that edge to it, and while John is mentally healthy, I think he loves it (and I think that that’s why, when Sherlock faltered in the restaurant upon seeing John again and hastily revised his ill-conceived plan, that he turned to the one thing he thought he could rely on, this shared humour) but when he’s having one of his bad times, it cuts sharply. I think that he understands the genuine affection behind it, and when Sherlock said everything he said in his wedding speech, I think he was honestly shocked to hear it expressed so directly. He does know how much Sherlock thinks of him, how much he relies on him, and that any light jokes to the contrary are genuinely jokes. With Mary, on the other hand, they weren’t actually jokes and he knew it. They’ve always had communication problems, ones that lead to living out what they want from each other in the worst ways possible, but the love behind it is a real thing. Their actions only hurt each other so badly because of that very yearning there, one that neither of them seems able to express, or willing to take the risk to express. It’s a truly damaged relationship and they’ve both been damaged by it. As someone who absolutely believes in their love, and in the capacity for them to love hugely, deeply, and without reserve, it hurts to say that. Nevertheless, I do believe that with all of my being.
I’ve joked that my new “kink” since series 4 is getting them both some therapy. I’ve written more therapy in stories since Christmas than ever before! Since series 4 started airing, I’ve written These Four Walls & Exile (after TST), Where My Demons Hide (John goes back to Ella), Now That the Dust Has Settled (We Can See the Stars), and A Satellite Out of Orbit (told from Ella’s POV in which she sees Sherlock during TLD), (after TLD), and then after TFP: A Case for Domestic Propinquity, Hell Hath No Fury (John goes back to Ella), From the Bottom of the Well (John goes back to Ella), Bridging the Ravine & Set in Stone (which take place at a resort for same-sex couples needing group and one-on-one relationship counselling). I think they need help. I also think that one of them could finally come to his senses and realise one day that they need to talk, and talk properly. I take back what I said about my biggest canon frustration being the way John leaves Sherlock: it’s definitely Moftiss never having once allowed them to have a direct, honest, and complete conversation. (Sometimes direct, sometimes honest, but never complete!) I think that they could get there on their own. It’s possible. It just hasn’t happened yet.
That said, remember this: in opera we always say that the opera never takes place on the day that nothing happened. Remember all of those other days we aren’t shown: we can safely assume that alllll of those other days, and these are the majority by far, they lived together, cooking and taking out the trash and taking turns in the bathroom (that model of house would rarely have had a third bathroom on the third storey; that’s where the servants would have lived and they’d have used an outdoor privy at the time when this model of house was built, and the other bathroom would be in Mrs Hudson’s suite). They’d have taken cases and gone for midnight dinners at the Chinese restaurant on the corner and laughed at all of the wrong times and provoked speculation from anyone and everyone who ever saw them together. They’d have complained about their respective siblings and been a little nicer to each other every time one or the other was having a bad day. Think of Sherlock buying John beer after things with Sarah ended, according to John’s blog. Think of John, on his honeymoon, yet unable to just stop communicating regularly with Sherlock. They’re a damaged team, but nonetheless a team. Think of Sherlock knowing John so well that he could even predict that John would choose to leave him again, and how. They know each other in ways that no one else ever will, and I stand by that.
I hope that helps? :)

Night Terrors
Summary: Some things might never change, but every once in awhile, even the painful ghosts of the past can give way to further intimacy.
Pairing: Emma Frost x Scott Summers
Warnings: Mentions of death and past abuse, implied smut at the end. Angst galore.
I am a gleefully unrepentant shipper of these two and love getting inside their beautifully messy heads :) They were probably the first character ship I rabidly helmed, and to my dying day I will maintain that Emma is better for Scott than Jean ever was. That is all!
He wakes up violently again, muscles surging against her skin, only two decades of strict discipline keeping him silent, holding back the anguish that rips through his mind, simmering in the pit of his chest.
Emma Frost is used to this, much as she wishes she weren’t. When you sleep with Scott Summers, the nightmares are part of the package. Not that she could ever fault him for it. She has her demons, too, the screams that won’t ever quite fade away, the haunted eyes, the scars and the bad choices.
No, the reason she wishes it weren’t the case is that she hates feeling him in so much pain, most of it self-inflicted.
She wishes he would open up instead of stuffing all of it down deep into that locked box in his psyche where it festers until it inevitably overflows. But then, who is she to make such demands of him? Emma Frost knows better than anyone how to hide weakness — how to repress her hurt, her doubts, anything that anyone could use to take advantage of her.
Like her, Scott has been hiding his weaknesses his entire life. She alone sees through the cracks in his armor. She is the only one he allows to touch the scars inside of him, the ones that run so much deeper and are so much more painful than the physical scars scattered across his bare torso beneath her.
Yet there are still things they don’t talk about.
He’s trained himself never to open his eyes when he wakes. Even when he sleeps, she can feel his subconscious awareness that he isn’t wearing his protective glasses. His eyes stay shut, but his hands find her, his fingertips digging into the smooth skin of her back and tangling in her silky hair with a searching ferocity that borders on painful. She lets her own eyes flutter open, and as he feels her eyelashes brush his chest, his breathing relaxes.
“Em?”
She tells him she hates pet names and sentimental drivel like that, but he could tell, by the way she stubbornly kept her lips from curving up into a smirk the first time he called her so, that she really didn’t.
She leans back slightly, pulling her weight from his body so he can take a deeper breath. “Yes, Darling?”
“I’m sorry.”
Emma huffs an annoyed breath, blowing stray hairs away from her face. Sometimes it seems Scott’s entire vocabulary consists of “I’m sorry”. Doesn’t he remember, after the handful of years they’ve been together already, that she isn’t the Professor, demanding a certain standard of performance from him? She isn’t Logan, telling him off.
She sure as hell isn’t HER, either.
Old habits die hard, they say.
Which is why, instead of voicing any of this aloud, she conceals her frustration at his apology and presses her lips to his strong jawline. “I’m a light sleeper, Scott. And it’s hot in here. It was only a matter of time before I woke up anyway.”
He knows that’s a lie. He knows she would sleep past noon every day of the week if he didn’t tease and coax her out from their nest each morning with the promise that she can join him in the shower. But he doesn’t challenge her. He’s still too raw and tender from whatever old horrors his thoughts cooked up for him this time.
“You sound like you want to talk,” she prods, sitting up. Moonlight slants in through the window, turning her already pale complexion silvery white.
“I don’t,” he mutters, rolling away from her. “Go back to sleep.”
Emma sighs and kicks away the sheets tangled around her long legs. “Well, you have my full attention, Lover. And something’s got your mind in a twist. Care to untangle it for me? Or am I supposed to simply await the next time I’m jolted awake so abruptly?”
His broad back tenses. “You don’t like it, I can sleep somewhere else for the rest of the night.”
Any other time, Emma would have laughed out loud at what he just said. This is his room they share, the room he has occupied since before she even knew what the Xavier Institute was, and he is the one offering to leave, instead of suggesting she do so. Whether it comes from his endearing sense of chivalry, or the fact that he’s completely wrapped around her finger, she isn’t sure. But it is funny.
She has a feeling he’s not in the mood for a laugh tonight. He rarely is even at the best of times. So serious. So controlled. So…perfect, in front of everyone else.
Emma was delighted when she first met him. She remembers the satisfaction of glancing through his thoughts and seeing how beautifully imperfect he actually is. Everything he worked so hard to keep from everyone else — the rage, the passion, the guilt, the POWER — she tasted it, lingering there in the wings from day one. She’s not the most religious person in the room, never has been, but something about meeting Scott Summers almost made her believe in a higher power.
Why else would they have crossed paths?
She reaches out, her caress sliding from his rigid shoulder all the way down to his hip, and he loosens slightly. “If you don’t want to talk…what about showing me?” This is nearly unheard of for her. She’s lived her whole life using her prodigious telepathic abilities to take what she wants and manipulate who she could in the name of self-preservation. It speaks volumes of how much he means to her, of the level of trust and respect they’ve cultivated in the years since they met, that she does not invade his thoughts whenever she pleases, asking for his consent instead.
He’s known her long enough to realize this.
Scott allows her to pull him towards her again, and he lets her in. Emma loves his mind, almost gets a rush from it when he bares himself this fully for her. She revels in the complexity of his keen intelligence, the turbulence of his emotions, the overwhelming drive and ambition that pushes him constantly to new levels of greatness. This is why she believes in him, why all of them believe in him, whether they are aware of it or not. If she had the time, she would willingly spend days in here, learning all of his idiosyncrasies, getting lost in his memories like a well-curated museum.
The trail of his despair is easy enough to follow despite her desire to window-shop, and as she follows it ever deeper, his reluctance drags at her feet. She has a sneaking suspicion she knows which dream this is.
Then she’s rounded a corner and there it is, playing out in front of her like a television rerun. The nightmare that most frequently haunts his slumber, the one they don’t talk about.
The one about HER.
She stands cold and aloof, an observer and nothing more as the flames rise higher and a woman cries out in agony and fury. Phoenix has always lingered here, in his mind. Emma can still feel whispers of the time when the redheaded woman was the one running her fingers through Scott’s memories and not her. Her presence is everywhere here, the one place that never changes even if Scott dresses in more expensive clothes now and has taken to leaving his jaw fashionably scruffy because Emma likes it. Another woman was here first, and no one can take that fact away.
“It was different this time.”
Emma turns to see him approaching her from behind. Not the same one currently playing out the grim theatre of death in his memory, but the real Scott. She feels a pain in her chest, though she would deny it, at the sight of his astral image still wearing his glasses, even though he can’t hurt anyone here. She turns away.
“How was it different?” The words come out in her White Queen voice, the frozen tones she used before she met him. Emma hadn’t realized until now just how different her natural voice is when they’re together.
He reaches out as if to put a hand on her shoulder, then has second thoughts and drops it to his side again. “Just keep watching, I guess.”
So she does, and to her surprise, when the flames die and Phoenix with them, the woman the other Scott is cradling in his arms isn’t a redhead. Straight, pale blond hair is what she sees flowing over his shoulder as he breaks down, and it hits her with an odd gravity that she’s never watched herself die before.
“I thought I lost you,” Scott tells her, voice low as he looks at the ground.
Emma turns to meet his gaze again, and a tear rolls down her cheek before she can stop it. “You…it was me?”
He nods, biting his lip. A moment of silence passes between them, and then he reaches for her hands, gazing down into her face. “I love you, Em,” he murmurs.
She’s always had a more difficult time saying it than he does. He says it all the time in his thoughts, sometimes even aloud. It’s the way he ends most of their conversations. But he’s known real love, what it feels like, and she’s only ever heard the word as a euphemism for something that means absolutely nothing when the wrong people are doing it.
In his thoughts, here and now, she thinks she understands what love really is, though.
So she says it back.
“I love you, Scott Summers.”
Then he’s kissing her, and she’s always loved when he does it like this, alone in his head where no one else can see, when it’s just the two of them at their most vulnerable, more naked than they can ever be in real life. It’s intimate, it’s perfect, and she suddenly pities all those unfortunate souls that will never be able to experience a unity like this.
Though if anyone ever accused Emma Frost of pitying anyone, she would slam them into next week.
When she becomes aware of her own physical body again, Scott is sitting up in front of her, his eyes still shut but his thumb softly wiping the tear from her cheek. If it had been anyone else, she would be offended at their care, at their sympathy, at the assumption that she needs anyone to look out for her. But it’s Scott, and his touch is so gentle, and his lips are slightly smiling at her, and so she feels that pathetic warm and fuzzy feeling that only he has ever drawn out of her.
She leans in to kiss him for real, sliding her tongue across his soft lips, and he returns the kiss with all of the warmth and passion in him, and she tells him again in their minds just how much she loves him.
When they break apart, Emma allows her skin to harden, changing her body to diamond in his embrace. He senses the difference, her coldness against his skin, and tips his head to one side, questioning. “Em, are you sure?”
“Yes,” she whispers. “Yes, Scott. Look at me.”
His eyelids open, and she’s staring into his eyes. Even though her capacity to feel is deadened when she is like this, she knows how much she loves his eyes. They’re beautiful in their burning crimson glory, so much raging energy thundering out of them like an untamable force of nature. Those eyes that have killed, that have pulverized steel into dust and destroyed even the staunchest juggernauts he has faced, are nothing more than gorgeous to her.
She can look him in the eye without his protective shields, something no one else on earth can do. It lights her up inside, both literally and figuratively she thinks, as she sees the patterns shining through her translucent body reflected on their bedroom walls.
He closes his eyes again and rests his forehead against hers. “Thank you.”
Even without her telepathy, she picks up on what he’s not saying, his desire for her to return to flesh and blood again, and what he wants to do to her when she has. “Don’t you want me to stay this way?” she asks coolly. “Most men would go mad at the very idea of having an entire woman forged of pure diamond in their arms.”
“I’m not most men,” he replies simply. “And lovely as you are like this, I really prefer my entire woman much…softer.”
She acquiesces, and he pushes her over so that he is the one on top now. “You’re certainly getting more assertive, Mr. Summers.”
His smile is perhaps the closest thing to wicked she’s ever seen cross his handsome face. “That is entirely your fault, Love.”
“Something I don’t mind blaming myself for,” she snarks, twisting her fingers in his thick hair. “What happened to ‘Go back to sleep’?”
“Oh we will, don’t worry. But we’re going to get good and tired out first.”
As he takes over, Emma reflects that his threats are the only ones she’s ever looked forward to fulfilling.

hi. on your post where you may or may not have ended on 'moffat is either your angel or your devil' did you have maybe an elaboration on that somewhere that i could possibly hear about. i'm very much a capaldi era stan and i've never tried to defend the matt smith era even though it had delightful moments sometimes so i wonder where that puts me. i'd love to hear your perspective on moffat as a person with your political perspective. -nicole
hi ok sorry i took so long to respond to this but i dont think you know how LOADED this question is for me but i am so happy to elaborate on that for you. first a few grains of salt to flavor your understanding of the whole situation: a. im unfairly biased against moffat bc im a davies stan and a tennant stan; b. i still very much enjoy and appreciate moffat era who for many reasons; and c. i hate moffat on a personal level far more than i could ever hate his work.
the thing is that its all always gonna be a bit mixed up bc i have to say a bunch of seemingly contradictory things in a row. for instance, a few moffat episodes are some of my absolute favorites of the rtd era, AND the show went way downhill when moffat took over, AND the really good episodes he wrote during the rtd era contained the seeds of his destruction.
like i made that post about the empty child/the doctor dances and it holds true for blink and thats about it bc the girl in the fireplace and silence in the library/forest of the dead are good but not nearly on the same level, and despite the fact that i like them at least nominally, they are also great examples of everything i hate about moffat and how he approached dw as a whole.
basically. doctor who is about people. there are many things about moffats tenure as showrunner that i think are a step up from rtd era who! actual gay people, for one! but i think that can likely be attributed mostly to an evolving Society as opposed to something inherent to him and his work, seeing as rtd is literally gay, and the existence of queer characters in moffats work doesnt mean the existence of good queer characters (ill give him bill but thats it!)
i have a few Primary Grievances with moffat and how he ran dw. all of them are things that got better with capaldi, but didnt go away. they are as follows:
moffat projects his own god complex onto the doctor
rtd era who had a doctor with a god complex. you cant ever be the doctor and not have a god complex. the problem with moffats era specifically is that the god complex was constant and unrepentant and was seen as a fundamental personality trait of the doctor rather than a demon he has to fight. he has the Momence where you feel bad for him, the Momence where he shows his humility or whatever and youre reminded that he doesnt want to be the lonely god, but those are just. moments. in a story where the doctor thinks hes the main character. rtd era doctor was aware that he wasnt the main character. he had to be an authority sometimes and he had to be the loner and he had to be sad about it, but he ultimately understood that he was expendable in a narrative sense.
this is how you get lines like “were the thin fat gay married anglican marines, why would we need names as well?” from the same show that gave you the gut punch moment at the end of midnight when they realize that nobody asked the hostess for her name. and on the one hand, thats a small sticking point, but on the other hand, its just one small example of the simple disregard that moffat has for humanity.
incidentally, this is a huge part of why sherlock sucked so bad: moffats main characters are special bc theyre so much bigger and better than all the normal people, and thats his downfall as a showrunner. he thinks that his audience wants fucking sheldon cooper when what they want is people.
like, ok. think of how many fantastic rtd era eps are based in the scenario “what if the doctor wasnt there? what if he was just out of commission for a bit?” and how those eps are the heart of the show!! bc theyre about people being people!! the thing is that all of the rtd era companions would have died for the doctor but he understood and the story understood that it wasnt about him.
this is like. nine sending rose home to save her life and sacrifice his own vs clara literally metaphysically entwining her existence w the doctor. ten also sending rose with her family to save her life vs river being raised from infancy to be obsessed w the doctor and then falling in love w him. martha leaving bc she values herself enough to make that decision vs amy being treated like a piece of meat.
and this is simultaneously a great callback to when i said that moffats episodes during the rtd era sometimes had the same problems as his show running (bc girl in the fireplace reeks of this), and a great segue into the next grievance.
moffat hates women
he hates women so fucking much. g-d, does steven moffat ever hate women. holy shit, he hates women. especially normal human women who prioritize their normal human lives on an equal or higher level than the doctor. moffat hated rose bc she wasnt special by his standards. the empty child/the doctor dances is the nicest he ever treated her, and she really didnt do much in those eps beyond a fuck ton of flirting.
girl in the fireplace is another shining example of this. youve got rose (who once again has another man to keep her busy, bc moffat doesnt think shes good enough for the doctor) sidelined for no reason only to be saved by the doctor at the last second or whatever. and then youve got reinette, who is pretty and powerful and special!
its just. moffat thinks that the doctor is as shallow and selfish as he is. thats why he thinks the doctor would stay in one place with reinette and not with rose. bc moffat is shallow and sees himself in the doctor and doesnt think he should have to settle for someone boring and normal.
not to mention rose met the doctor as an adult and chose to stay with him whereas reinette is. hm. introduced to the doctor as a child and grows up obsessed with him.
does that sound familiar? it should! bc it is also true of amy and river. and all of them are treated as viable romantic pairings. bc the only women who deserve the doctor are the ones whose entire existence revolves around him. which includes clara as well.
genuinely i think that at least on some level, not even necessarily consciously, that bill was a lesbian in part bc capaldi was too old to appeal to mainstream shippers. like twelve/clara is still a thing but not as universally appealing as eleven/clara but i am just spitballing. but i think they weighed the pros and cons of appealing to the woke crowd over the het shippers and found that gay companion was more profitable. anyway the point is to segue into the next point, which is that moffat hates permanent consequences.
moffat hates permanent consequences
steven moffat does not know how to kill a character. honestly it feels like hes doing it on purpose after a certain point, like he knows he has this habit and hes trying to riff on it to meme his own shit, but it doesnt work. it isnt funny and it isnt harmless, its bad writing.
the end of the doctor dances is so poignant and so meaningful and so fucking good bc its just this once! everybody lives, just this once! and then he does p much the same thing in forest of the dead - this one i could forgive, bc i do think that preserving those peoples consciousnesses did something for the doctor as a character, it wasnt completely meaningless. but everything after that kinda was.
rory died so many times its like. get a hobby lol. amy died at least once iirc but it was all a dream or something. clara died and was erased from the doctors memory. river was in prison and also died. bill? died. all of them sugarcoated or undone or ignored by the narrative to the point of having effectively no impact on the story. the point of a major character death is that its supposed to have a point. and you could argue that a piece of art could be making a point with a pointless death, ie. to put perspective on it and remind you that bad shit just happens, but with moffat the underlying message is always “i can do whatever i want, nothing is permanent or has lasting impact ever.”
basically, with moffat, tragedy exists to be undone. and this was a really brilliant, really wonderful thing in the doctor dances specifically bc it was the doctor clearly having seen his fair share of tragedy that couldnt be helped, now looking on his One Win with pride and delight bc he doesnt get wins like this! and then moffat proceeded to give him the same win over and over and over and over. nobody is ever dead. nobody is ever unable to be saved. and if they are, really truly dead and/or gone, then thats okay bc moffat has decided that [insert mitigating factor here]*
*the mitigating factor is usually some sort of computerized database of souls.
i can hear the moffat stans falling over themselves to remind me that amy and rory definitely died, and they did - after a long and happy life together, they died of old age. i dont consider that a character death any more than any other character choosing to permanently leave the tardis.
and its not just character deaths either, its like, everything. the destruction of gallifrey? never mind lol! character development? scrapped! the same episode four times? lets give it a fifth try and hope nobody notices. bc he doesnt know how to not make the doctor either an omnipotent savior or a self-pitying failure.
it is in nature of doctor who, i believe, for the doctor to win most of the time. like, it wouldnt be a very good show if he didnt win most of the time. but it also wouldnt be a very good show if he won all of the time. my point is that moffats doctor wins too often, and when he doesnt win, it feels empty and hollow rather than genuinely humbling, and you know hes not gonna grow from it pretty much at all.
so like. again, i like all of doctor who i enjoy all of it very much. i just think that steven moffat is a bad show runner and a decent writer at times. and it is frustrating. and im not here to convince or convert anyone im just living my truth. thank you for listening.

Hello!! Hope you are doing fine ❤️ I see you ship Maulsoka so I’m gonna ask a question: How do you think Obi wan would react after learning Anakin’s padawan, HIS padawan, is dating one of his worsts enemies? I believe it would be a funny situation! 🤣 But I wanna hear your theories or headcanons about it 💖
Hello! Apologies for the late reply, with the weather warming up here, I am spending less time on the computer and more time trying to domesticate my absolutely feral flower beds.
As for your question, I think Obi-Wan would basically turn to look at Anakin like this
Tumblr media
"This is your fault!"
But more seriously, I think his reaction would really depend on when the realization took place. In a No Order 66 AU directly post Siege of Mandalore, I think he would be more Disappointed Jedi Master Kenobi than anything, though that would probably also depend on whether or not Anakin almost (or actually) Fell.
If he had, then I think Obi-Wan would actually be much more willing to “turn the other cheek” so to speak, seeing as he had just been staring down the reality of losing his best friend to the Dark Side because Anakin didn’t think he could confide in Obi-Wan about his relationship (or in my Obikin shipper heart, about his feelings in general). So in that instance, I think Obi-Wan would be much more willing to try to understand Ahsoka and Maul’s relationship, mostly due to the fact that he feared if he drove her away, he would be driving her to the Dark Side.
Now, in a more lighthearted world, I imagine it would basically be like that scene in Teen Wolf were the father finds his daughter making out with A Terrible Life Decision (in his eyes, I loved Isaac) and summons her into his office (”Where I keep my guns”) for us to hear him yell “ANOTHER WEREWOLF?” offscreen (though in this case it would be “A SITH LORD?”). Ahsoka, however, would be unrepentant, and this would probably lead to Obi-Wan and Anakin finding her and Maul making out in every shadowy corner, Force help them.
However, because you asked and because I like some crunch to my headcanons, I think my favorite AU would be one where Ahsoka contacts Obi-Wan about her and Maul’s plan to defeat Sidious, thus having him go to them instead of confronting Anakin on Mustafar. But they’re too late, and the Purge still happens, forcing the trio to flee together. They keep moving, dodging the newly formed Empire, and all the while, Obi-Wan watches Ahsoka and Maul circle each other, slowly drawing nearer and nearer. He tries to talk to Ahsoka, to caution her, but she is still bitter and angry at the Council’s willingness to sacrifice her. And Obi-Wan, still raw and bleeding from the loss of Anakin, watches helplessly as another person he cares about - another person he loves, even though he’s not supposed to - steps farther away from the path he has dedicated his entire life to.
That’s not to say I don’t think he’d ever come around. I think that once Obi-Wan saw that Maul actually cared for Ahsoka, that he was willing to put his life on the line to protect her and that he was actually moving closer to the Light because it, he would start to be able to untangle his own feelings from the rules he was raised to follow. This is the man that petitioned to accept Quinlan Vos back into the Order, the man who stood smiling beside Anakin in the Force even after being felled by his blade. Once Maul began to prove to Obi-Wan that he was not seeking to do Ahsoka harm, or pull her to the Dark Side for the sake of his own power, I think Obi-Wan would begin to accept that Ahsoka, like her Master, forged her own path in the world, and no one could dissuade her from it.

Hello!
I am not sure I have enough to say (outside of my fic) for tumblr but here goes nothing!
I am all about CQL/MDZS and KinnPorsche fic right now. My stuff is on AO3 here: https://archiveofourown.org/users/The_Snarkivist/works?fandom_id=33035890
I am an unrepentant lover of rare pairs. My OTP for CQL is Wen Ning and Ouyang Zizhen but I also LOVE XiYao. For KinnPorsche I am a hard core ChanBig shipper but also recently started writing Tay/Jom because honestly I think they work really well.

Hi!! I am a fan of your writing and especially your characterization of the Mikaelson family. The way you translate them into the human world in your AU fics is something I am always obsessing over. Anyway, I just wanted to know if you prefer TO or TVD (it is just something I am always curious about in the case of Klaroline writers...). And why you prefer Klaroline over Klamille?
Thank you, anon! 😊 I’m so glad you enjoy my Mikaelsons! Once I started writing them into stuff, I can’t seem to stop. 😂
In spite of what my writing history might suggest, and the fact I do love the Mikaelsons, I’m not a big fan of The Originals. 😅 I enjoyed some of the show for the first two seasons, but from S3 onward I couldn’t even finish it when it was still airing. I prefer TVD, though not all of it either. S2 and 3 of TVD are *chefs kiss*, and S4 is good, too.
I was never really a fan of Klamille. It always seemed to me like it was shooed into TO for the sake of giving Klaus a romantic interest. The chemistry was barely there and the way they built it frankly did Camille so dirty. Lol she was used as a prop a lot of the time, had no story or will of her own (she spends almost the entirety of s2, when she shows up at all, as a glorified babysitter) contradicting what her own character was meant to represent/stand for on the show. I don’t hate Cami, but I wish they’d done a better job there, both with her character and the ship, if that’s what they really wanted to go for. And the season that was meant to solidify them as a ship was just 🤣 S3 is such a mess. Nothing makes sense, the whole build up there is so screwed up, Klaus is half in love with Aurora the whole time, and what they did to vampire!Cami, honestly. It was just a very, very badly written story, so it’s really no wonder that most people who already shipped Klaus with someone else couldn’t get into it, and that was very much my case.
I think all the things they kept telling us on TO that cami/Klamille was supposed to mean/represent but was never really shown were thing that Klaroline had in a much more natural and fleshed out way. Klaus was genuinely more conscious around Caroline, he felt the weight of his decisions, he showed regret, actively chose to forego revenge and punishment because of her, to risk himself or his family just to help her (it even happens on TO when he risks luring Rayna Cruz to NO because Caroline was having a mental breakdown over Stefan and the twins lol). It’s really the only time when klaus seems to reckon with consequences for someone who’s not on his family. That’s not to say Caroline made klaus a better person, I don’t think anybody could ever make him better, but it did make him more conscious of his actions, and all because she truly held him accountable for the stuff he did, didn’t just let it slide or gave him a pass because “oh no Mikael was so mean”. And the chemistry they had was truly intense! A lot of it came from the way they were written, the clashing of personalities and ideologies, so to speak, which worked. Caroline wasn’t shown as this pure, well of goodness, she had darkness in her, but she had a grip over it, and while she was very much attracted to Klaus, she didn’t let that skewer her sense of correctness. That leveled the field for them. While Klaus held all of the physical power in their interactions, Caroline had the emotional power. They were equals in that sense. For Klamille, the power imbalance was way too big, and the way the whole thing starts was just a nuh-uh that I could never get past. Klaus literally pimps her out to Marcel against her will and there was never a moment when he was made to acquit himself for it, or when she was legit angry about it, quite the opposite. It’s barely addressed at all.
With Cami, Klaus remained every bit an unrepentant psycho little shit and she was just there to excuse his actions. She never held him accountable, not even when he killed his brothers girlfriend in cold blood and cursed the mother of his child. Instead, she seemed satisfied when he said he bit her so dahlia wouldn’t think he cared about her lol I was genuinely angry when she trying to make excuses for him to Elijah when he’d just witnessed his girlfriend burn to death. 😂 Like omg woman, get a grip 🤣 It was almost naive the way she seemed to think he had an inherent “goodness” and kept buying his daddy issue bs every time he did something inexcusable. So while I was hearing one thing being said, the actions on the show were telling me a completely different story, and Cami came out as easily manipulated and naive, rather than someone with a strong sense of righteousness and cunning enough to understand the mind of an original vampire. She was Klaus’ excuse, not his moral compass. There was no balance in their dynamic. And so that whole line became very dull and annoying to me because it just made no sense, and then S3 just lost me completely on everything (not just Cami, but Cami was for sure one of the things they messed up).
Im sorry, anon, I got a little carried away here. 🤣🤣🤣 But yeah, not a fan of Klamille even though I don’t hate Cami. I actually think she deserved better. I’m sorry if this came out too critical, I don’t know if you’re a Klamille shipper! But thanks for stopping by and for your really sweet message! :)

writer's meme - TY to @r0b0tb0y for the tag!
How many works do you have on AO3?
168 - oh man that's more than I'd realized. I passed 150 and didn't even notice!
What’s your total AO3 word count?
1,133,901
So many.
How many fandoms have you written for and what are they?
Since r0b0tb0y and I were just talking about this, I conveniently have a list of all 20 ranked by number of works
134 - Star Wars 7 - Original Works 7 - Marvel 2 - Pirates of The Carribean 2 - The Old Guard 2 - Discworld 1 - Good Omens 1 - Leverage 1 - The Good Place 1 - Avatar: The Last Airbender 1 - Ocean’s 11 1 - Harry Potter 1 - The Goblin Emperor 1 - Gundam Wing 1 - Star Trek: TNG 1 - Hades (Videogame) 1 - Sailor Moon 1 - Russian Doll 1 - Mummy/Wonder Woman crossover
What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Lol, looking at my top five - it falls into two categories
1. Fics I wrote right at the height of a fandom's popularity that got a massive reader boost because it was the Hot Thing Right Then
2. Star Wars Fix-Its
~
A Series of Better Decisions - A Padme/Obi-Wan/Anakin SW Prequel Trilogy fix-it where Anakin talks to Obi-Wan and spends Revenge of the Sith in a stressed-out bisexual panic instead of becoming a Space Fascist. He winds up fake-poly-dating Obi-Wan to try to bring down Palpatine, and eventually winds up in a better place due to the power of Quitting Your Job and becoming a househusband.
Galactic Response Time - Captain Marvel - an at the time MCU canon-compliant gen fic that ran the universe forward and explained how Carol really TRIED to show up for all those other crises that happened, but it turns out most of the major MCU disasters only lasted like three days and space is real big, y'all. Featuring Nick Fury cathartically bitching with his Space Bestie.
New Lands for the Living - Fix-it where the sequel trilogy ends Even Worse, Poe goes back in time to mercy-kill the timeline, and much to his dismay winds up married to just-before-Original-Trilogy Luke Skywalker. He has an existential crisis about his own existence, meets some competent women, and starts fixing things.
Life's Little Pleasures - The Good Omens fic where I put all my ace feelings, featuring metaphysical bonding and good scotch.
Flustered - Another Padme/Anakin/Obi-Wan SW Prequel Trilogy fix-it, where Order 66 never happens. Anakin gets some therapy and Padme gets a horrible crush on Obi-Wan.
Do you respond to comments, why or why not?
I do! I love getting to talk to people about fics, and I so appreciate people making the effort to comment I want to spend some time with them! It's so much easier not to comment, I know.
What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?
Hmmm this is not my normal wheelhouse. I usually go angst that gets resolved by the end. Let me look to see what the options are.
Okay, I think we've got two contendors: In Waystation an exhausted Poe Dameron crash-lands in a station where a Bodhi Rook that lived and then hid now lives with Baze and Chirrut. There is a little epilgue that implies they're going to meet again, but the bulk of the fic does end with Poe making the decision to go back to the Resistance, and leaving Bodhi behind. Still, I think it's more wistful, rather than angsty.
Time Enough for Mourning takes it though, I think. Davits Draven/Antoc Merrick, that is entirely about Draven mourning the fact that Antoc has died. The end is still, I think, more cathartic than angsty, but it is overall probably the strongest "break out the waterworks" of my fics.
Do you write crossovers? If so what is the craziest one you’ve written?
I do occasionally, usually when someone prompts me and I find something in there that makes my brain go!!! I think the strangest is probably The Face Underneath. It's a Cassian Andor/Elim Garak fic where I drag Garak into the Star Wars Universe for a triple drabble series where he is an old mentor of Cassian's.
Have you ever received hate on a fic?
Mmm, not proper hate. Realtalk, the most devastating one for me was when I posted a fic that the only comment was a spelling critique.
And yes, there was a spelling error, but still, very crushing to have that be the only feedback. (It has since found a few readers that said nice things, very healing :D)
Do you write smut? If so what kind?
Yes! Uh - consensual, between adults, often M/M adults, tho I have written explicit femslash, hetfic, and poly piles. It's usually affectionate, often plays with power dynamics even if it doesn't go into full dom/sub.
Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that anyone has made me aware of, I've never looked.
Have you ever had a fic translated?
Had a request or two, but never been linked the result - so not sure if it didn't happen or if I just didn't get linked. I welcome it!
I have had several fics podficced, and I LOVE that. What a joy! Making a blanket permission statement that allowed podfic is one of the best decisions I've made as a fic author. Suddenly, Podfic!
Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Once or twice! I like the idea of doing it, but follow-through is hard. Hoping to do some co-writing soon though, so we will see!
What’s your all time favourite ship?
Sorry, unrepentant multi-shipper here. I like possibilities, and finding the story that will bring people together, more than one specific thing.
What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?
I don't have ANYTHING I've given up on, but there are a few fics in my unpublished drafts that were beautiful ideas, and really struggled to become contained stories. They all want to be sprawling things, and I have not felt sprawling-thing-writing passionate about those ideas. But, you never know! Inspiration may strike.
What are your writing strengths?
I'd say character voice, along with that, dialogue. Also humor moments that still have real weight and don't undercut the story, as well as straight comedy writing.
What are your writing weaknesses?
You see, I, uh, do this thing where I don't really end a sentence - I think about ending it, I even assume, at some point while I'm writing that I have ended it; I have not and it meanders, persistently, until I have constructed a whole paragraph made out of one chain of words and a hodgepodge of punctuation.
Also the thing where I accidentally use an unusual word five times in one paragraph because my brain has grabbed onto it like an excited puppy and keeps offering it up as the Perfect Word.
What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
I love having multilingual characters. When writing, I tend to keep all the words in English and use dialogue tags to denote language shift - unless I am inventing the language, or have a speaker of that language willing to beta the bits to make sure I don't mess them up too badly.
What was the first fandom you wrote for?
Actually wrote and posted? Rogue One.
Fandom of my heart my younger self spun out stories in my imagination about? Where if I had my own computer and easy access to a fic archive they almost certainly would have become spectacularly earnest fics?
ReBoot and Sailor Moon. The Sailor Moon was an AU that took place on the sun and they all had kick-ass horses. Baby Sass knew what was up.
What’s your favourite fic you’ve written?
Nope, sorry, can't pick, love them all in different ways for different reasons.
Tagging: @semisweetshadow, @anamelesstraveler, @jules-of-the-crown - and generally if you follow me and want to do it, do so and tag me in it!

ok I'm not here to complain abt anything but i wanna gush abt a silly trope i like that im sure antis would h a t e so i cant put it on main XD
ok so. you know the trope where siblings get separated at birth for whatever reason, and they meet up again later? I love the subtrope where they feel a weird connection and end up w crushes/some romantic entanglement, only to be shocked when told theyre relatives/siblings
(I think the best example i can think of is star wars, but i like thinking of gravity falls AUs w this too)
as an unrepentant incest shipper I love this trope, especially since it has a scientific basis, called genetic sexual attraction. I know that they’re Problematic, but the mortal instruments series played with this trope as well

The Triumph of the Marginalia
Marginalia, n.:
1 : notes or embellishments in the margins (as in a book)
2 : nonessential items
-Troll OED
Is it just me, or is Nepeta and Equius’s arc the most slept-upon piece of brilliance in all of Homestuck?
A brilliance, might I add, that culminates in possibly the most triumphant, fulfilling emotional moment in the entire work:
https://www.homestuck.com/story/7928
*stands back and beholds its majesty while from the background comes the sound of James Roach brutally murdering ska*
No, but actually, I mean this 100% unironically, and by the end of this post, I think you’ll agree with me.
By now, I think we all understand the Act 6 double metaphor: the series of temporal loops and universes that Lord English commands is paralleled with, and in fact totally identical to, the narrative of Homestuck. Our characters’ lives exist within this context. They struggle to escape it, and are defined both by it and by the rejection of it.
Enter Nepeta.
The metaphorical meaning of Nepeta in Homestuck is irrelevance, and that’s why she’s the most relevant character in any discussion.
Nepeta was one of the characters killed off during the Murderstuck arc. Hussie argued that she was perfect for this role. In fact, I believe he said something like “Nepeta is sweet, but if you look up the dictionary definition of ‘expendable character,’ you’ll see a picture of Nepeta playing with a ball of yarn and looking very cute.” She’s an endearing combination of shipper girl and apex predator, but not one of your Vriskas or Terezis in being a driver of the plot. Hussie, it seems, created her just to round out the troll cast. He described one of his purposes in Murderstuck as being to axe some of the less necessary trolls to reduce the scope of his character list.
Except that didn’t really happen, did it?
Like a cat with nine lives, Nepeta just keeps coming back.
Equius is another addition to the troll cast who gets pushed away from the main action. He was a character-writing challenge: how do you make someone who’s gross, uncomfortable, and racist kind of likable anyway? I’d argue Hussie succeeded, in large part because of Equius’s relationship with Nepeta. By the time you finish with Hivebent, you’ll probably have a little fondness for their moraillegiance. And if that doesn’t do it, the conversation that serves as their swansong in Equius: Seek the Highblood will tear your heartstrings to shreds.
Because Equius dies, tragically clownmurdered. There was, at the time, some stink over this from Equius fans. Would he have really let himself be killed so easily? Hussie countered: yes, and it was the most in-character thing he could have done. He died doing what he loved: being asphyxiated erotically and horrifically by a superior. Truly, there could be no more fitting end to his character than that.
And yet.
No sooner did Hussie complete his self-appointed story cleanup challenge than he immediately began to undo his own work. It’s almost as if, in declaring his intention to own those who preferred more characters to narrative economy, he immediately had to own himself??
By the time we get even a little way into Act 6, we’re deep in the dreambubble landscape, meeting dead characters left and right. And who should show up there but Equius and Nepeta? Equius attempting to get it on with a bunch of Aradias, who dump him. And Nepeta, living out her romantic dreams as a representative of a timeline where she got together with Karkat. They both appear as symbols of this deadness, this irrelevance. Except that that brings them back into the story, into the spotlight – the opposite of where they’re supposed to be!
Like many bits of commentary, Hussie continues to incorporate the metaphor Nepeta=Irrelevance into Homestuck. Karkat’s remark on their journey that he would love to meet “FIFTY FUCKING NEPETAS” and embark on “NEPETAQUEST” alludes to formspring remarks to the effect that, no, Homestuck was not going to have much time for the minor characters. Except it clearly did.
Why couldn’t the narrative let the meowrails go? Was it that despite the economy of Murderstuck, something was still incomplete? After all, one of Equius’s charms was that he appeared to be growing into a less repressed, kinder person. In Seek the Highblood, we see him letting his guard down enough to roleplay with Nepeta for a change. Their love for each other: wasn’t that ultimately what could redeem Equius in our eyes? So his dying and thus failing to protect her–isn’t that something that should be addressed?
You could imagine many a Nepeta and Equius fan saying this to Hussie back in 2011.
But Hussie was already saying it to himself.
The duo come roaring back into the story in the Trickster mode arc, mid Act 6, thanks to Gamzee’s ridiculous resurrections. True, Nepeta is still reduced as part of Fefeta, the character formed from killed-off girls who never speaks onscreen. But doesn’t using that fact as a running gag kind of draw our attention to it? Doesn’t the fact that Fefeta talks to Roxy constantly offscreen inform us that once we get outside the frame of the narrative, Nepeta has a rich inner life and countless stories to tell?
And it’s here that Equius gets something he never got in his original “arc:” the chance to apologize to Nepeta. You’d be forgiven for missing it since there’s so much else going on at the time, but he does, while fused with AR. Here’s what you’d miss, though: he’s grown as a person in the afterlife. He’s come to regret that moment of weakness, where his fetish kept him from protecting his moirail. Impossible as it seems, he’s continuing his character arc.
The scene ends with Fefeta exploding (she’s also, after all, dealing with Eridan), but it leaves us with a tantalizing question:
Will Nepeta forgive Equius? Is there even a plausible time and space in that story when she could respond to his words?
Do you see what’s happening here? Instead of being erased, Nepeta and Equius are starting to slip the bounds of the story that killed them. They leap in and out of the frame, half-mythical figures. Marginalized, they write their own stories in the margins. They exist in complete defiance of the original logic of Homestuck.
Lord English is an alt-Author figure, a dark, brutal reflection of narrative control and narrative necessity. His world, in which horrible choices are necessary, in which the alpha timeline is a ticking clock leading inexorably to his manifestation, is one that beats down people not deemed important enough by his narrative. Which makes it identical to the one we’re reading. Throw all the unnecessary characters in the trash. Kill them off, if it suits my purposes. The world doesn’t need Nepeta.
Which is precisely why it does. Because isn’t defying Lord English the entire point? Isn’t it what Homestuck reveals as truly heroic?
What might Nepeta be capable of?
Let’s talk about two other victims of English’s forces of marginalization. Davesprite might be the most quintessential example. He teaches us what the alpha timeline is and how it works, by going back to fix a doomed timeline and submitting to being doomed himself. Except he merges with a bird and avoids that fate. Okay, but he clearly gets killed off fighting Jack in Jade: Enter. Except he comes back and hangs out with Jadesprite. Okay, but he dies in the planetsplode in the Retcon. Nope, he comes back from that, too. Huh. He keeps slipping the fate decreed for him by – who else? Lord English.
But it’s a struggle, clearly. He’s caught up in various cycles of guilt and shame. Over being “not the real Dave.” Over his feeling that he has to be a hero in the sense Bro demanded he be. Hussie describes Davesprite as fitting the “way of the unbroken sword:” his experiences have led him to believe in being strong and capable at the expense of all else, in contrast with the other Dave, whose belief in Bros’ toxic ideas is beginning to slip – the “way of the broken sword.” And where did Bro get his toxic ideas from? At least in part, the whispering voice of the soul of Lord English.
Now we turn to Dirk. Like Dave, Dirk has a marginalized, “less important” splinter self but it’s more of a pressing concern. AR shows Dirk’s darker side: exhibiting manipulative tendencies that human Dirk is trying to move away from. He’s also a copy removed from humanity, who feels an understandable amount of disillusionment about being removed from physical existence and his own identity. But as much as Dirk may splinter, like his dumb anime sword, he never breaks. What this means in the symbolic language of Homestuck is that Dirk lives fully, instinctually, in the way of the sword. He believe in a world of hard choices, masculine heroism, and necessity. Ultimately, this, too, is part of what makes Bro so harmful to Dave. In AR and Davesprite, we have a strange parallel: two splinter selves, both of whom are enmeshed in the logic of LE.
Except AR, unlike Davesprite…kind of is LE.
What is Lord English composed of? Well, there’s Caliborn, the most unrepentant shithead of all time. There’s Gamzee, embodiment of horrifying clownery. And then there’s AR, a version of Dirk even more removed from the person he wants to be.
And…Equius?
Allow me a moment to get really indulgent and take a big puff on my Homestuck scholar’s pipe.
The metaphorical meaning of Equius in Homestuck is: sort of growing out of being a creepy racist.
Or maybe let’s say: the opportunity to do that. We said that Equius was on the verge of being redeemed (even had been, in the eyes of many readers). What does it mean to stick him in with Lord English’s souls? It means two things:
1) Equius is a product of his society, which was shaped by Doc Scratch, aka by Lord English, both of whom are kind of him, but Scratch picks up on his traits especially. This is a recognition of that fact: the part of him that sucks is, itself, Lord English in a dizzying loop.
2) Equius’s story is a tragedy. It is the story of a kid who started to escape his society’s tendencies, but was sucked back in by the evil force behind them.
Although…maybe that’s not the whole story.
Because both Equius and AR aren’t really that bad. AR’s pretty understandable, and by no means beyond the possibility of goodness. And the combination of the two? Honestly, pretty harmless. They counter each other’s worst tendencies by devolving into a weird goofball. In fact, AR even says he wants to do something heroic: to sacrifice himself for something really important. He does, kind of, mustering a last-ditch robohorse assault on Caliborn. But at the same time, this is the substance of his tragedy. A hero whose defeat of a great evil forces him to become the substance of that evil. Which could not be a more fitting summary of how these characters function in their story.
But maybe that’s still not the whole story.
Enter Davepeta.
At first glance, the creation of Davepeta seems like Hussie’s most batshit troll move yet. I feel pretty confident in saying that even those who predicted either of these characters returning didn’t see that one coming. However, a few pages of Davepeta’s presence reveals a fundamental truth:
Davepeta is fucking amazing.
In them, Davesprite’s depressive moods are buoyed up by Nepeta’s upbeat optimism. Nepeta’s reclusive shyness is balanced by Dave’s tendency toward brash banter. Both of them gain confidence from being the new person they are. They quickly let go of ideas inherited from the world that kept them from self-knowledge and happiness. Dave, his toxic masculinity; Nepeta, her fear.
A great point I’ve seen made is how much Jasprose and Davepeta resemble fantasy selves for Rose and Dave: indulgent, technicolor manifestations of people they could be if they let go of inhibitions and limitations. But I think Davepeta is the most unambiguously positive of the two.
The metaphorical meaning of Davepeta in Homestuck?
Growth.
Not giving a fuck about what the world thinks. The world, aka Lord English. Because Lord English could never have predicted that his machinations would also spawn a confident, powerful fusion of two beings he had discarded as totally irrelevant.
They’re also a multicolored non-binary furry, so that’s even more points in the pissing off shitheads column.
They are someone Lord English never conceived of, never could have conceived of, but which lay as potential within his domain all along.
And if Lord English is a reflection of the author, of what Hussie feels one has to destroy or sacrifice, than Davepeta is an indulgence existing in defiance of all that.
And this makes Davepeta the most powerful person of all.
They are the light at the end of the tunnel. They are the person you could be, if you could get past your mental shackles and just grow. It may not be possible to ever get there as a mortal human, may only be for a godlike sprite, but striving to be like them matters, is purpose and fulfilment enough.
And they love ARquius.
Nepeta believed in Equius, believed he could grow, and was growing. So as much as ARquius traps himself in a Lord English loop of his own making – grown, perhaps, out of Dirk’s belief that there should be a loop, that importance is admirable—Davepeta pulls from him, in his last scene, his finest qualities. His love.
Equius asks forgiveness again, and this time, Nepeta’s able to give it. Davepeta easily accepts ARquius’s apology, an apology which never could have existed within the confines of a normal narrative. A reconciliation that both of them fought for by defying their narrative, by existing outside it. By being not the trolls who lived and died, but their broader, conceptual selves, who exist beyond lifetimes. Beyond the comic page. And they consummate that reconciliation with that most cherished and loving of gestures:
A hug.
And even as this is Equius and Nepeta’s reconciliation, it’s also Dirk and Dave’s. Which, I should mention, is also taking place, simultaneously and circumstantially simultaneously, just below. It’s a more difficult one, certainly, especially as filtered through the splinters of Davesprite and AR. Here forgiveness is not quite the right word. But – knowledge, and recognition, and a kind of peace. It’s Davesprite’s chance to reunite with the part of his brother he loved, while also being a person who’s grown beyond him. And it’s AR’s chance to be loved.
Oh, sure, the art is ridiculous, the pose absurd. But that’s what makes it sublime.
I mean, what did you think that Sbahj comic was really about?
A boy distancing himself from his feelings through irony, never acknowledging that the story he’s telling is about two bros who desperately want to hug each other, but don’t know how.
Here’s the hug.
I want to dip into Epilogues territory for a moment, but it’s territory which is fairly well implied by Davepeta’s statements and role in Collide. The Meat Epilogue, I think, only illuminates what was already there.
Lord English is uniquely vulnerable to Davepeta.
And why shouldn’t he be? They, like so much else in Homestuck, are a consequence of his actions spiraling far beyond his control. But it’s more than that. Davepeta is finally able to lay the unbroken sword to rest by following the “prophecy” about Dave defeating Lord English. On the one hand, that’s kind of what happened. But it’s also completely different from what English intended, antithetical to his desires and goals. Which makes the victory all the sweeter. But at the end of the day, Davepeta doesn’t fight for the reasons Davesprite did. They’re free of that, now. Instead, they fight from a place of genuine compassion. Because Davesprite, like Dave, knows the true meaning of being a hero: caring about one’s friends.
But the most important thing about Davepeta is that they know Lord English, on a level that perhaps neither he nor they recognize. Both AR and Equius are in there, and both are capable of redemption. It’s only Gamzee and Caliborn who are truly beyond it.
How does Davepeta defeat Lord English?
With a hug.
They wrap their claws around him, and carry him into the sun like a piece of garbage. It’s an aggressive hold, but it’s also effectively an embrace.
And I have to wonder: in those final moments, did they sense a connection there? Did Equius and Dirk stir somewhere within Lord English? Did they give him a moment’s pause? Resist him? Make it just the tiniest bit easier for Davepeta to do their work?
If so, then that, too, is heroism.
At the very least, it’s circumstantially simultaneous with the hug we see in Act 6, and so it carries the same message:
Redemption.
Not for the shitheads, but for those who wanted to be better.
And if this isn’t enough, there’s a third reconciliation here, too: between author and reader, or to put it in other terms, author and character.
If Lord English is a shadow of the author, what part of the author can be redeemed? Maybe not the destructive, antagonistic urges. But the part that plans and designs and philosophizes as Dirk does. That part of Hussie wanted Davepeta to be there, to strike that final blow, and made it happen.
Because, when you get right down to it, as much as Hussie pretends to be antagonistic toward his readers and the characters they enjoy, it’s the fans, the shippers, the furries, those whose hearts go out to a cute, shy cat girl that he most celebrates.
Hussie fucking loves Nepeta.
Nepeta and Equius are, sneakily, the best characters in Homestuck, because they understand its fundamental message: that to succeed in Homestuck is to defy Homestuck. They defy everything it throws at them, and somehow, improbably, come out on top.
All of this is there on that page, a whole edifice of storytelling culminating in that singular, grand, supremely indulgent expression, a feast of looping leitmotif and color and imagery and meme and sound. It’s all there, if you know where to look.
Nepeta and Equius love each other, and that’s pretty fucking great.
See? I told you.
