Throwback Thursday #73!- Butterglory- Crumble (1994- Merge)

In the 90s, Merge had one hell of a roster, with bands like The Magnetic Fields, East River Pipe, Neutral Milk Hotel, and, yes, Butterglory (among others). 

This KS via California duo of Matt Suggs and Debby Vander Wall had released a few off-kilter singles before releasing this debut full-length. 

Landing somewhere just south of Pavement (with a little Beat Happening and Archers of Loaf in the mix), Suggs and Vander Wall wrote a bevy of terrific little tracks for this debut.

The opening cut, "Waiting On the Guns," buzzes all the way through with Vanderwall's low-key vocals taking charge (before they duet on the chorus), while "Forty-Four" slows things down to a crawl with some righteous spindly guitar. 

"Jinxed" is another cool, buzzy one, while on "Trapped" Suggs shows off his arch falsetto, and "The Skills of the Star Pilot" has some true melodic charm.

15 cuts in just over half an hour and not a duff one in the pack. You really can't go wrong with Crumble.

Ohhhh they are so. They grew up together and trust eachother more than the world!!! They do silly evil things like stealing peoples brains because they think they're doing something good for society (they aren't). Snap is the small coyote, they're quick and efficient and the brains of the operation, with a nasty sense of 'justice' and tendency to get revenge for the most petty actions. Their main talent is being able to take apart and reassemble everyday objects into horrible horrible scifi tools/weapons kids next door style. Quake is the huge badger, she's your typical "big strong and stupid" type but refuses to actually fight because it would be "unfair for the little guys". Her main talent is getting into places because she can tear apart walls like they are tin cans and she loves standing in places she should not be!! Quake protects snap with all of her power, and snap does their best to do the same by making sure she doesn't get into dangerous or unfair situations without knowing. It's the two of them against the world your honor!!! Vote for silly evil girlies who are so siblings and so so evil in a cartoony way.

RELATIONSHIP TO GREER: Friendly Acquaintances. When she first started at school Genevieve wanted to be liked and find friends more than anything, so much so that she got caught up in gossip and knowing other people's business. Sure Greer was nice to her but wouldn't ever really give her the time of day. Genevieve felt a bit of rejection in that and found no matter what she did to try and put herself out there, the attention was almost always on Greer, especially over her. To make matters worse Genevieve couldn't even feel justified at the jealousy she felt for Greer because of her chill nature. She did seem genuinely nice, at least to her, and that made it even harder to hate her.

HOW THEY EMBODY THEIR SKELETON TROPE.: In an alternate universe, Ginger Quinn and Gretchen Weiners would've been the best of friends. They're the kind of girls who know everything about everyone, y'know what they say; Knowledge is power and power is survival. For Ginger, keeping herself safe was top priority and at this point she'd gotten so good at knowing other people's secrets they were practically pouring out of her ears. Genevieve has two goals in life, to survive and to become successful and she'll stop at nothing to reach them. Her academic records are outstanding and though she may be seen as perfect through other people's eyes she knows what it's like to feel like she can't catch a break. She's extremely hard on herself especially if she feels she isn't living up to her goals. Most could describe her as a bitch but she's only trying to one up the naive, and try hard girl she felt she was when Greer was still around.
