I know TBSkyen has told us to sit with it for a while before deciding how we feel about the ending but I’m sorry I don’t think any amount of sitting with it is going to make me okay with them killing Jinx. The way she died wasn’t satisfying, the sacrifice meant almost nothing, and all the effort of those around her to keep her alive ended up going nowhere. Isha ends up being completely pointless because she’s only a plot device not a proper character and Jinx dies anyway. I don’t see how this was a satisfying conclusion to her narrative arc and character arc, I just don’t. Any supplemental material that makes it so she’s still alive in the games doesn’t matter to me because in the Arcane canon she is dead. To anyone not playing the games she is dead.

It’s making it hard for me to even want to rewatch it or enjoy what else was there because I’m just. I’m so goddamn fucking tired of seeing mentally ill characters have to die to lift the burden of their existence from others. Vi was so well adjusted and happy after. No mourning. No funeral/end of life rights. Her death was sudden and contrived just for some extra shock value. It didn’t feel like a tragic death, like out of a tragedy, bc this season wasn’t structured like a tragedy the way the first season felt. Her death didn’t feel inevitable and I’m furious because out of everyone. Out of EVERYONE. She deserved to live through this. She deserved to come out the other side of all her pain and suffering. She deserved to walk away from it all. But she didn’t. Because Borderlines are evil people and people with DID are evil and the only way they can redeem themselves is to die. The only happy ending is with them dead. The other two characters who showed suicidal ideation are also functionally dead. Whether or not they’re literally dead, the story’s over, they’re as good as dead.

Dont even get me started on how in her last moments she doesn’t see Isha or Silco (the two characters we SEE HER have a genuine familial bond with), only Vander (whom she has two sequences with in s1, the longer of which had no dialogue and was still less than a minute). She burned down The Last Drop—which she associated with Silco more than Vander now—to break the cycle of violence by killing the last connection to her past, she’s finally free, and then she fucking. Dies. Anyway.

God I want to enjoy what we did get but I just. I’m so tired of the end of my story always being that I have to die so other people can live.

i do think people dunk on grimdark a little too much (and also overuse that label to the point where something is grimdark if it's tragic and you just don't like it). grimdark isn't badly written tragedy. it's a reflection of the feeling of helplessness in the face of a world that seems to get worse in the face of all attempts to change that trajectory.

A video appeared in my feed. A Needlessly Thorough Look At HL. Very interesting, I though. This rant isn't directed at the video itself nor the author. I'm sighing at the narrative lead of the game, so, yeah.

I'm also going to be straight: I don't take Mоira's explanation for The CanonTM because it creates a lot of conflicting stances; the second paragraph will be self-explanatory enough, as it's obviously a speech needed for the press. Still.

What the video mentions:

Ancient Magic of the books was ancient in the sense it was rare, often forgotten, complex, or unfathomably dangerous.

Understanding it as existing somewhere on the meta level, aka something only the selected few can interact with yet it explains so a lot, means Mоira Squiеr perhaps understands abstract concepts such as Ancient Magic of the Books on the same level many redditors understood the concept of the Backroоms.

The Backroоm is the Sartre's nothingness. It scares us, because we expect an open field or an open space, like a well-maintained office or a parkin lot, or at least, them being not decrepit that it's obvious they have been abandoned, to naturally have people. Their absence, the quietness, the stillness of the air, all frighten us and sharp our senses.

We fear the vacancy of presence. We dislike being stranded—*alone*.

The Backrooms don't require monsters, almond water, battery packs and other useless items, nor they are a quest. The only thing needed is to realise you fear the inability to describe what you are seeing—to face the most primordial of fears that created us gods and demons.

The *feeling* of unknown that wants to be soothed by a fairy tale.

Ancient Magic, if you look at it like this, looses all charm and purpose and creates another Redditor's Backrоom.

But it has been his skill. Tоm Riddlе was also amazing and incredible at magic. Olivаnders are amazing and incredulous at magic. Hаrry Pоtter, the boy who could cast without incantations, who fought the Dark Lord alone, was able to connect the wands with the rarest spell Priori Incantatum, was seemingly born into becoming a powerful and strong, combat-smart wizards—because he *was*. And the list goes on. Neither of those people had an all-mighty meta-planaric ability.

They all had skill. Trained, grown, groomed, and put to shine.

Calling it Ancient Magic means to disregard the effort, the study, and the dedication; it's equating skill with talent—as if it's an innate ability to be able to pull through challenge after challenge.

And so you lost it the moment you have introduced a very gimmicky kind of magic only the selected few could wield, of whom nobody remembers. Brilliant.

So how to fix it?

Maybe creating a disambiguation. Ancient Magic of Lily Pоtter's is Ancient because it is exceptionally rare. But Ancient Magic of MC's is Ancient because it is the ability to sense certain aspects of magic better than most—and by that I mean, be magick itself in the same way The Eldеr Scrоlls' protagonists are the avatars of Lоrkhan or the same way the Outsidеr picks his chosen.

The magic does not need to be doubled.

It is magical enough to manifest however it pleases.

Magic is magic. Only its manifestations are ancient or modern.

So I am having a quite niche problem (ok maybe it's not a problem. a question to ponder at least). So. "The consolation of philosophy". Is very cool. But Lady Philosophy has a particular vibe that … idk why but I feel a strong urge to assign this vibe to one of the Ainur, ideally one of the Valar and initially I thought Nienna, but no.

She (Philosophy) had this almost-agressive anti-despair "stop talking bs" attitude that reminds me of Gandalf. But also at some points she's like "You ask why bad things happen to good people? The answer is simple: they don't." and he would not say that. And yea, Nienna very much would not say that.

I can imagine Námo (esp with his relationship to time*) being like "No, I've never seen bad things happen to good people, you're simply mistaken" and generally going a similar route of argumentation. But I already have a strong HC for his personality. But also, it may fit together… I need to rotate it more in my brain.

(To be clear: she's not being cruel or very dismissive. There's some context. But she is being a little, how to call that, Gandalf-like. Snarky? A little bit.)

BTW I can absolutely see pre-Exile Finrod unironically claiming that suffering is an illusion etc (but in a very compassionate way) and driving his half-uncle into a rage by this.

(oh and ofc the text has soo much Númenorean vibes, I mean the Faithful in late Númenor. I'm surprised that I haven't thought of this earlier but... if we change Plato and similar guys to some Elves and change the geographical names and maaaybe some astronomical details (round earth) and make the personifications ambigiously "maybe I imagined it maybe it was a Maia" etc... without any change to the theology I can see it as a text originating in there. and I'm sure Tolkien would agree. In a beautiful polyamorous world LuffyNamiVivi would be just as popular as NamiVivi and Zolu. The THREE of them have such an incredible and intense dynamic together and it's so rarely featured in fanwork. I love how all three of them are bossy natural leaders who somehow get along and how their love for each other is expressed through silly bickering and tussling as much as it is insane acts of devotion. I mean the whole bit where Luffy and Vivi are working together to save Nami.... and then of course Luffy and Nami working together to save Vivi.... The way they have the exact same reactions when they find out about Vivi being missing.... and when they left Alabasta... THEY LOVE HER YOUR HONOR!!!!!!!

And It's so beautiful tragic how Nami and Luffy will never ever stop sailing and Vivi will never ever abandon Alabasta. So they can only all be together once in awhile but THEY WILL!!!!!! They will sail around the world to see her again... Pick her up for another adventure....

I don't know I just love how Luffy has such nonbinary weird i don't know what gender is can i eat it energy and is such an acearopoly icon and just always treats the female characters in a way that unfortunately really stands out in the shounen genre. They are just people to him!!!! Not Girls™️. Just People!!! And he brings out such a goofy side in Vivi. They're childish together in a way that I think is good for her as someone who had to grow up too fast. Nami too! I could write essays on Nami and Luffy's relationship.

I don't know I think we're held back by the instinctive repulsion from Making It Straight. They have such great dynamics that deserve to be explored. Of course their relationships with the main character are interesting and important!! He's the main character!!! Yet the fanwork doesn't reflect that... Since it's Gay Romance Or Nothing. Which, you know, I respect, but as a genderqueer trans acearospec poly person who loves women in fiction IM BOREDDDD IM BORED AND TIRED. LETS DO SOMETHING NEW!!!!!

Straight people don't own them.. We don't have to change their dynamics to fit Straight Romance Ideals in order to ship them... I think people don't imagine Weird Bisexual MF enough. Or Weird Entangled Undefined Relationships enough. Like Luffy is not the one who would have the upper hand in that relationship. He doesn't NOW. And it's fun!!!
