The weather in the wild west Highlands of Scotland is capricious, and very often changes rapidly. So Algy was not altogether surprised when a dreary grey day was followed by one of glorious sunshine, and he was delighted to see that at last the February sun was strong enough to persuade the crocuses to open their flowers and smile at him.
Although it did not get as cold around Algy's home as it did in many of the places where his friends lived, the winter was nevertheless horribly long and dreary… and decidedly limiting… and like many other folk, Algy was now longing for warmer days when he would be able to get out and about adventuring again.
But despite the sunshine, the temperature was still very low, and the weather unreliable, so Algy satisfied himself for the moment by selecting a particularly sunny spot beside some of the beautiful, glowing crocuses, and indulging in some light and entertaining reading, which he dedicates especially to those of his friends who keep cats 🐈😀
I have a Gumbie Cat in mind, her name is Jennyanydots; Her coat is of the tabby kind, with tiger stripes and leopard spots. All day she sits upon the stair or on the steps or on the mat; She sits and sits and sits and sits—and that's what makes a Gumbie Cat! But when the day's hustle and bustle is done, Then the Gumbie Cat's work is but hardly begun. And when all the family's in bed and asleep, She tucks up her skirts to the basement to creep. She is deeply concerned with the ways of the mice— Their behaviour's not good and their manners not nice; So when she has got them lined up on the matting, She teachs them music, crocheting and tatting. I have a Gumbie Cat in mind, her name is Jennyanydots; Her equal would be hard to find, she likes the warm and sunny spots. All day she sits beside the hearth or on the bed or on my hat: She sits and sits and sits and sits—and that's what makes a Gumbie Cat! But when the day's hustle and bustle is done, Then the Gumbie Cat's work is but hardly begun. As she finds that the mice will not ever keep quiet, She is sure it is due to irregular diet; And believing that nothing is done without trying, She sets right to work with her baking and frying. She makes them a mouse—cake of bread and dried peas, And a beautiful fry of lean bacon and cheese. I have a Gumbie Cat in mind, her name is Jennyanydots; The curtain-cord she likes to wind, and tie it into sailor-knots. She sits upon the window-sill, or anything that's smooth and flat: She sits and sits and sits and sits—and that's what makes a Gumbie Cat! But when the day's hustle and bustle is done, Then the Gumbie Cat's work is but hardly begun. She thinks that the cockroaches just need employment To prevent them from idle and wanton destroyment. So she's formed, from that lot of disorderly louts, A troop of well-disciplined helpful boy-scouts, With a purpose in life and a good deed to do— And she's even created a Beetles' Tattoo. So for Old Gumbie Cats let us now give three cheers— On whom well-ordered households depend, it appears.
[Algy is reading the poem The Old Gumbie Cat from the collection Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats by the 20th century English poet T S Eliot.]

The idea that there are Keepers for all things (living and nonliving) in the Merlin universe. Anhora was just one of the many; shepherd of a tiny, near-extinct flock. But there must’ve been so many others…
Miscellaneous keepers of the cobblestones, the neighbors’ chicken coop, the rusted wheel that works the local well that only one person oversees. The idea that all of those small fragments of society didn’t become obsolete overnight, but fell into harsher disrepair as those twenty odd years of the Great Purge wore on. It takes a village.

To my multiple Texas friends, acquaintances and coworkers who have commented that they’re “surprised how much cooler it is this year, probably because all of the storms” do I have some articles for you!
Tldr:
El Niño:
Tumblr media
La Niña
Tumblr media
These occur on roughly a 7 year cycle. ROUGHLY.
And yes. Climate change will: make drought conditions worse for TX during la Niña (check), and make storm/flooding events worse during el Niño (check). I am tired of explaining this to passers-by.
And to that one coworker. No. A cooler year does not mean climate change got better.

that crowning moment of You’re Too Deep In It when you’re annoyed by the lack of crucial worldbuilding details on Memory Alpha that you need for fic purposes, which means you’re delighted by the fact that this means you can do the worldbuilding yourself, which means you’re anxious because what if the worldbuilding contradicts popular fanon and people like it less 🫠

Guys guys guys guys
I just came up with a philosophy lol, and wanted to share cause I thought you guys might like it too :)
So we all have bad days right? We all have emotions that can get pretty heavy sometimes, and we don’t know why.
Well, it might help to think of it like this. Just like the weather changes, so does our emotions. Some days it's cloudy, some days it's bright, and some days it's foggy, stormy, snowy maybe, and etc.
But most of the time, the weather pattern that we receive the most is rain. So just like when it rains, we've gotta pull out our umbrellas right?
In an emotional sense, maybe our umbrellas could be things that make us happy, things we're grateful for, prayer, things we're looking forward to, just stuff like that.
And maybe, when the rain starts to pour again, we could pull out our umbrellas and rely on it to shield us from the rain.
For example, my umbrella is made out of my family and friends, playing my guitar, my favorite artists/bands, the ships that I ship such as klance or solangelo, my dreams and aspirations for the future, just things like that.
So when you start to feel down, maybe pull your umbrella out, and think of all the things it’s made of and allow it to shield you from the rain.
Because again, honestly, everyone has bad days and stormy weather sometimes. We all have days where we don’t know what the weather is going to be like in our minds. So maybe if we learned to try and look back on the things that make us happy and that we’re looking forward to, such as our passions or desires or dreams or anything like that, we can learn to better shelter ourselves from these unpredictable weather patterns.
So perhaps you might wanna try to create an umbrella of your own sometime. Maybe draw a little umbrella and list all the things it’s made out of underneath it and carry it in your pocket, make a list on your phone, or just keep it in your mind. No matter how you make your umbrella, just know that from now on that umbrella is there to help shield you from all the difficult and unpredictable weather patterns that we face in our minds with our emotions, and that clear skies are always ahead of us.

Even the Rain Can Speak to You
Leaned back up against a tree the wind blows softly in it's crown a few leaves fall, but it's much to early for Autumn the colors haven't started changing yet The sky is quickly darkening as a storm front builds right where the sky touches ground
The animals are quiet and I smoke my cigarette in nothing but the sound of the breeze the leaves above rustle and for a brief second it seems they are laughing And maybe they're just excited for the storm
I should probably get up and make my back in the general safety of the indoors but this view is beautiful and it's only fifty yards from my home I can make it back in a few seconds And I never was one to mind getting caught out in the weather my old person hobby is watching the radar
The sky rumbles as the clouds roll in I shiver as a few early rain drops land upon the skin of my arm I sigh and take a drag of my Pall Mall and slowly start to life myself up off the ground which seems so much harder than it used to be
There is no warning One second I'm dry, and the next I am struck by a sudden downpour and it is cold, so cold taking away the heat and breaking the humidity back to safety The sky is dark, and it's almost like twilight And I slowly make my war to the house the cigarette I was smoking now far too wet to be saved.
I stand on the porch and watch the sheets of rain fall It's so loud that it almost hurts my ears And for a few brief seconds, I swear I can hear words they're hidden in the cacophony of sound
A roar of rolling thunder reminds me to go inside and dry off

It had been a cold and frosty night, with a clear sky illuminated by a glowing golden half moon and a liberal scattering of stars and dazzling planets, and when Algy woke up in the morning he found that everything was frozen once again.
Fluttering over to the wee pond, where only a week or so ago he had dipped his toes in the water when he had perched on the mossy stones to gaze into its depths, he found that he could now perch right in the centre, but he could no longer look below the surface as it was covered in obscuring patterns of ice.
But the air was sweet, and the sun was climbing up above the trees, so that soon the area would be flooded with the light which was beginning to make the frost sparkle at the pond's edges. It was going to be another beautiful day, and as he rested on the slippery surface, ignoring the chill in his tail feathers for a few moments, a great tit started singing its repetitive spring song in a nearby bush, and Algy suddenly rememberd a lyrical poem that he had read some time ago:
Pray to what earth does this sweet cold belong, Which asks no duties and no conscience? The moon goes up by leaps, her cheerful path In some far summer stratum of the sky, While stars with their cold shine bedot her way. The fields gleam mildly back upon the sky, And far and near upon the leafless shrubs The snow dust still emits a silver light. Under the hedge, where drift banks are their screen, The titmice now pursue their downy dreams, As often in the sweltering summer nights The bee doth drop asleep in the flower cup, When evening overtakes him with his load. By the brooksides, in the still, genial night, The more adventurous wanderer may hear The crystals shoot and form, and winter slow Increase his rule by gentlest summer means.
[Algy is thinking of the poem Pray to What Earth Does This Sweet Cold Belong by the 19th century American writer and naturalist Henry Thoreau.]

The Chilling Effect of the Polar Vortex: A Winter Phenomenon Strikes Regina, Saskatchewan, and Beyond
Shaina Tranquilino
January 20, 2024
Tumblr media
As winter settles in across the Northern Hemisphere, intense cold snaps and frosty weather systems are not uncommon. However, every few years, a particularly extreme weather event occurs that captures headlines worldwide – the polar vortex. Recently, this frigid phenomenon has unleashed its icy grip on numerous regions, including Regina, Saskatchewan in Canada. In this blog post, we will explore what exactly the polar vortex is, how it affects our lives, and why it's important to understand this chilling meteorological occurrence.
Understanding the Polar Vortex:
The polar vortex is an area of low pressure situated near the Earth's poles. It is characterized by strong winds circulating counterclockwise around a center of extremely cold air. These winds form a tight spiral pattern high up in the atmosphere known as the jet stream.
Normally confined to the Arctic region during winter months, occasionally these powerful winds weaken or shift southward due to complex atmospheric dynamics. This results in a sudden intrusion of bitterly cold arctic air into lower latitudes — a phenomenon experts refer to as a "polar outbreak" or "polar vortex event."
The Impact on Regina and Beyond:
Regina, located in central Canada's prairies and often referred to as one of the coldest cities in the country, experienced firsthand the brutal effects of the polar vortex. As temperatures plummeted well below freezing point (reaching as low as -50°C), everyday life ground to a halt. Transportation was disrupted or delayed, and residents were advised to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary.
But Regina wasn't alone; other parts of North America also fell under the influence of this winter nightmare. States such as Texas faced unprecedented snowfall and record-breaking low temperatures that crippled infrastructure unprepared for extreme winter conditions. Similarly, Europe witnessed heavy snowfalls and sub-zero temperatures, causing travel chaos and affecting millions of people.
Coping with the Vortex:
During a polar vortex event, it is crucial to prioritize safety and take appropriate measures to protect oneself from the extreme cold. Staying indoors, dressing in layers, ensuring adequate heating, and avoiding unnecessary exposure are all vital precautions. Furthermore, maintaining communication with neighbours, especially vulnerable individuals such as the elderly or those without proper shelter, becomes essential.
Understanding Climate Change's Role:
While it may seem counterintuitive that global warming could cause severe cold spells like the polar vortex event, climate change plays a role in its occurrence. The melting Arctic ice due to rising global temperatures weakens the jet stream, causing it to become wavier and allowing frigid air masses to escape the poles more frequently. As a result, these events can intensify due to climate change but remain sporadic and unpredictable.
The recent polar vortex event has left Regina and various parts of the world shivering in an icy grip. Understanding this meteorological phenomenon helps us recognize its impact on our daily lives while appreciating the importance of preparedness during such extreme weather events. By taking necessary precautions and fostering community support, we can navigate through these frosty times together until warmer days return.
Note: It is important to keep up with local news sources and official guidelines regarding any current or future polar vortex events for accurate information and safety instructions in your specific region.

How does one track bird migrations and anticipate their arrival in a particular location?
Bird migration is an incredible natural phenomenon that occurs twice a year, as birds travel from their breeding grounds in the north to their wintering grounds in the south, and then back again. As a birder, being able to track bird migrations and anticipate their arrival in a particular location is an exciting and rewarding experience. In this article, we will discuss some techniques and tools…
